Hogwarts Founders HC

Okay, so I don’t know if this has been done before, but here goes:

The Founders grew up together. In fact, they were raised in the same house, much like siblings. The only difference being that they each had a bit of a rough past that was kept from the rest. For instance: Godric Gryffindor saw his entire family perish in a fire, one he started with no more than a flicker of a thought. He could’ve saved them if he hadn’t been so scared. After his family died he ran away from his village, swearing he would never be so weak again. He came across a Hippogriff in a field. To prove (to no one but himself) that he wasn’t afraid, he charged the large bird(?), it instinctually tried to attack. Godric did everything in his power to fight back, but being a ten year old has its limits, and theres only so much he can do. All of a sudden, a frail, old, decrepit-looking woman emerged from a nearby wood. She captured the creatures attention and was able to scare it away with a...wispy lion? The next moment, the woman is at Godric’s side. She tells him to follow her to her cottage in the woods so that she can tend to his wounds. 

Salazar Slytherin was a con-artist, and a damn good one for a nine year old, although he really didn’t have much of an option. The family he was born into treated him as if he were less than the mud under their shoes because he could hear whispers coming from the garden. Soon after his family abandoned him, he learns that  he was a natural at sleight of hand. This was how he earned money to eat. He would use a rock and three cups. The point of the game was to keep your eye on the cup that contained the rock while the young lad switched the cups around. When he was finished mixing them up, you had to try to choose the cup with the rock. If Salazar won, the loser would have to buy him his next meal. Little did the players know that the game was rigged, because the young boy could transfer the rock, without lifting the cup. For months, Salazar used this  “game” as a means for food, until one day he was approached by an elderly woman. She bet him that she would win, and if she didn’t she would buy him three meals. The eager boy accepted her offer, but to his surprise he did not win, like he had so many times before. Confused, he looked from the rock to the woman. Calmly, he said, “Double or nothing.” The woman agreed, and once again won the boy’s game. This went on for several rounds, Salazar became more and more exasperated and intrigued with each. “How do you keep doing that?” he finally asked her. “Magic, little one,” she replied. She promised to teach him all she knew in time, but at that moment she needed to bring him to get some new clothes to wear and food in his belly.

Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff were very different, yet so similar. Rowena, whose mother died in labor and whose father often drank so much that he forgot Rowena existed, was raised by an intelligent librarian that lived in the same town asn she and Helga. He had found her one night, cold and starving, with no where to go. The man offered her a place to stay, under the condition that she learn to read and write, as every child should. She stayed with the man for months, but when he fell ill and passed, she knew she couldn’t return to her father. Instead she sought out the only other person she had ever trusted, Helga. When she arrived, she found the other girl with a swollen lip and a bruised eye. Helga told Rowena that her father had hit her, but that it had been her own fault, because she had left the gate to her mother’s garden open, and some badgers had gotten into and tore it to pieces. Rowena was angry at Helga’s father and, strangely, Helga. Helga could see the good in a murderer, and Rowena wasn’t sure if she was moved by this, or envious. Rowena knew that the world was cruel, and that the people in their town (especially their fathers) could be very unkind. She knew they had to leave. Together the eleven year-olds fled, in search of a better life. One of brilliance and kindness. They hadn’t gotten very far, when Helga saw a young bird fall from a tree. She walked over to it, Rowena in tow, and cautiously inspected it. The little bird’s wing was broken, that much could be seen. 

Without thinking, Rowena tore a piece of cloth off of the bottom of her dress, and tied it around the bird’s wing, like she had once seen the town’s doctor do to her father after taking a spill, following a particularly long night of drinking. Helga was amazed by the precision and tenderness Rowena used when handling the bird. “What type of bird do you think it is, Rowena? If you had to guess?” Rowena looked closely at the bird. An Eagle, she was sure of it. Before she could share this infromation with Helga, a voice from behind them said, “I see the eaglets have hatched.” The pair turned, and were faced with an older woman, who certainly shouldn’t have been travelling alone. “So it is an Eagle, then?” Rowena asked the woman. She nodded her head, and extended her hand, silently asking to hold the eaglet. Carefully, Rowena obliged. The woman cupped the baby eagle in both hands, and brought it to her ear, as if it were telling her a secret. She pulled off the make-shift splint, and much to the girls’ surprise, the Eagle emerged from the woman’s hands shaking both wings,completely unharmed, as if trying to shoo a pesky bug. Both children stared at her in bewilderment. “Do you girls have a place to stay?” the woman asked, as if she had not just defied all logic, by somehow curing the once broken eagle. Helga was the first to shake her head. The woman then led the way to a homey looking cottage, with a large garden out front. There, they saw two young boys, around their age sitting outside, holding clothes for the girls, as if they were expecting them.

For the years to follow, the woman raised the four as her own. They all got along just as siblings would, and at the ripe age of eleven, each child was taught the secrets that were promised to Salazar. They were taught to be brave, kind, brilliant, and cunning, to fight for what you believe in, to always be loyal, to seek wisdom in what ever form it may come in, to be determined even when things get hard, and above all else, never tickle a sleeping dragon. The witch gave them the home they never had, the one they thought they weren’t worthy of. She showed them that no matter what background you came from, you will always find your place with the people that accept you and take note of your talents, blood or not, and when she passed away, the Founders opened a school, a home, for those who wanted to learn magic, and everything that came with it. The first time a student reffered to their school as home, they knew they had done well. They knew Madame Hogwarts would be proud.

Hufflepuffs are dangerous. They are dangerous because of their loyalty. They are good finders and generally high but they are extremely loyal which is as important as being brave, smart and ambitious.

Loyalty is one of the most important characteristics, imagine the unwavering loyalty, imagine being so loyal that you would die for them- kill for them.

Now imagine being loyal to the wrong person.

That unwavering loyalty was what lacked in the other house people Peter Pettigrew, Narcissa Malfoy etc and yes that was what changed the tide but yeah, loyalty dudes!

I’m considering doing a different cross stitch piece for this cosplay if I can find patterns for a flower representing each Founder & a heraldic/medieval-looking H--& maybe include the badger motif as a necklace instead? (If I can settle on a vaguely handwavey time period, haha.) Or, possibly add a corset-esque bodice in the same black floral fabric as the contrast bits? Any thoughts? (This will be an actual poll at some point.) 💖🌿🏰✨ Ace culture/meme thing: DRAGONS. 🐉 (I was highly disappointed in my group's first Pathfinder campaign that the dragons we encountered were always Evil.
