Today, May 6th, 1986, was a good day.
Up until very recently, most of the days had not been good at all. Spring break had done a number on all of you – nightmares, panic attacks, flashbacks. Some worse than others.
But today was a good day.
At least, until it wasn't.
Summer sun had invaded Hawkins and left everyone sweating and seeking shade after even a few minutes outside. AC blasted indoors and opened windows begged for a breeze to come through and bring some solace from the heat. The community pool was packed shoulder to shoulder and nearly impossible to get into – but that was fine.
Because Steve Harrington had his own pool.
Eddie, Lucas, Dustin, and Max were all already in the suburban backyard by the time you showed up with Robin. Steve had joined the other boys in the shallow end to start up a game of chicken – Dustin on Steve’s shoulders and Lucas on Eddie’s. Max sat on the pool’s edge with the water up to her shins, not able to get in further with the cast still on her right arm, and rolled her eyes as her friends tumbled over and into the water just to get back up again.
Robin went to go and sit by Max while you let yourself into the Harrington home, a container of drinks destined for the fridge just inside. By the time you had them chilling and pushed back out into the oppressive heat, Steve had pulled himself out of my pool to wait for you.
“Hi honey,” he said with a sticky sweet smile, ducking in to press a kiss to your cheek and dripping water on your cover-up.
“Hey handsome,” was your easy reply, Steve's smile lighting up further at the compliment. You called him handsome all the time and he still reacted like he'd never heard it before.
“Harrington, come on!”
His smile fell slightly as he rolled his eyes, shrugging at you before jogging back over to the pool.
You were just about to pull out your book and set up on one of the deck chairs when Nancy and Mike pushed through the fence gate.
More happy greetings, a hug from Nancy, and some chatting about the things she'd brought with her. Mike stripped off his shirt and shoes before walking over to the pool steps beside Max, submerging to his chest as he watched the others continue their game.
Robin came over and helped you and Nancy blow up the 3 inner tubes she had brought – Robin having to rescue you both with her superior musicians lungs. She quickly claimed the green dinosaur float, falling into it in the water as Dustin and Mike started to squabble over what kind of dinosaur it was supposed to be.
While you had originally grabbed the unicorn float, with it's pink hair and blue horn, you were quick to notice the longing glances from Nancy and offered a trade. She never would've ended up asking for it – she thought it was too childish to actually want the unicorn float – but you didn't miss the giddy grin on her face as she traded with you and settled into the pool a lot more gracefully than Robin.
So, with your strawberry frosted donut float and book in hand, you laid out on the sticky plastic and began to roast beneath the summer sun.
You and Nancy both had paperbacks cracked open while Robin seemed content to attempt a nap beneath her shades. Max busied herself by using a foot to gently push your floats around like a slow and lazy game of bumper cars. Mike finally succumbed to peer pressure and joined in with the boys playing with a volleyball toward the deep end and everything was good.
Everyone was smiling and laughing. Warm and lazy with the heat of a good, summer day.
Focused on a particularly intense chapter, you hardly noticed someone approaching your float until a wet chin draped itself over your arm.
Steve was looking at you with that lovesick smile again, his hair wet and pushed back as his tan skin glowed beneath the golden rays. “Enjoying your book?”
“I am, thank you very much.” But still, you placed it down on your stomach and turned your attention to your pretty boyfriend. “Are you having a good day?”
“Might have a couple bruises tomorrow, but not a big deal.” He hooks a wet arm over the side of your float, anchoring himself to you, and the skin along your thigh breaks out in goosebumps from the sudden brush of water.
“Steve, that's cold!”
He barely conceals a laugh, grin growing wider, before he tilts further toward you. “What, this?”
Was the only warning you got before he shook his head out like a dog, water flying from the ends of his hair and sprinkling all over you.
You nearly squealed, shoving him off and shouting about him getting your book wet, even though the smile on your face betrayed you.
After a few minutes of insisting it was funny as you fake pouted, and then Steve giving you some pathetic puppy dog eyes, you accepted his half hearted apology and settled again – one hand intertwined with Steve's as he held onto your float.
“Nance seems fine,” he said quietly, bringing your attention to the brunette. You had told him earlier you were worried about today, about bringing her back to the pool she spent two years barely able to look at, but she seemed perfectly at ease on her unicorn float. Just slowly turning page after page as she continued through the fantasy romance novel you’d lent her last week.
“Yeah,” you agreed, exhaling a relieved sigh, “I'm glad. She deserves it, y'know? We all do.”
Steve's hand squeezed yours, bringing your attention back to him on your other side. “You're the best, you know that, right?”
Not expecting the compliment, you got slightly flustered with the praise. “No, that's you,” you joked with a light flick to the tip of his nose.
He released your hand in mock offense, pushing your float slightly away as he put on a dramatic frown. He inhaled to reply, mouth parting, before he suddenly disappeared beneath the surface of the water.
The next few moments played out in slow motion.
In reality, Lucas and Eddie dove under the water to sneak up behind Steve – each of them grabbing an ankle and tugging him under as a practical joke.
To Steve, his heart stopped.
His chest constricted as his heart rate doubled, eyes squeezing shut as the panic gripped him tight and he waited to be pulled through the gate and thrown out on the other side.
Water filled his mouth from his half completed inhale as he was dragged under – his eyes widening and immediately beginning to burn from the chlorine.
But he wasn't in the pool anymore. It was dark; so, so dark and cold. He couldn't see anything through the murky water as he sunk lower and lower. The vice around his ankle held tight as he gave a kick, continuing to pull him back down to hell again.
To you, the world flipped on its side.
The last thing you saw before Steve went under was a flash of panic in his wide, brown eyes. Just like that night, on the boat. When he got dragged down and didn't come back up again.
“Steve?!” Your call is shrill, very quickly panicked as your adrenaline surged and your body tensed for a fight. It gets the attention of the rest of the group but you don't notice – eyes hyper focused on the spot he was before he disappeared.
In reality, you could glance down and see him in the clear water, just barely a foot below the surface. But you're not there in the Harrington’s pool. You're on a boat at Lover’s Lake and the man of your dreams just disappeared into the murky depths below.
“Steve?!” You scream again, rolling off your float and into the cool water, just like you had that night. I have to go after him, I have to get to him.
You vaguely register someone calling your name but you’re diving under, eyes burning instantly as you continue to look at Steve.
Eddie and Lucas have let him go now after sensing some sort of commotion from above, but Steve isn't moving. He isn't trying to swim up, though he is slowly ascending toward the surface. He's completely frozen there in the water, curled in on himself defensively.
You grab him and he grabs you in response, his nails digging into your bicep painfully as his eyes shoot open again. He doesn't even seem to realize its you before the two of you break the surface again.
Steve gasps for air – choking slightly on the water that was still in his mouth – and then starts to cough as he grabs tightly to you with both hands.
Your heart is pounding against your ribs like a hummingbird as your eyes rapidly scan him for the battered bruising across his throat, the blood coming from his mouth. “Steve? Can you hear me? Are you hurt?”
Robin is by your side an instant later, her head and shoulders still dry as she comes around the side to place a gentle hand on Steve’s shoulder while he coughs out chlorinated water.
Steve gives a stuttered nod as the coughing stops and he's able to take another deep breath in, his grip on you loosening to not be so painful as he closes his eyes. His inhales are coming through quickly, his eyebrows drawn together tight like he's in pain.
Your tunnel vision begins to scope out and you catch sight of Lucas and Eddie looking pained and apologetic in your periphery. They're both treading water in the deep end as you turn on them, anxiety and panic filtering out quickly into rage.
“What the fuck is your problem, huh?!” You snap, causing both of them to jump. Lucas's eyes are wide as saucers and Eddie looks like he's half tempted to book it just from the look on your face. “What the fuck kind of trick was that?! Maybe I should pull a gun on you, Lucas, just for fun. Or maybe, Eddie, I'll loop a rope around your neck for a few minutes and see how the fuck you like being reminded of almost dying!”
Both of them wince, drawing back from your outrage, which only makes you want to advance.
“H-honey,” Steve stutters beside you, half scolding and half terrified as he tries to put on a brave face. “It was just a joke.”
You turn your wild eyes back on him, body still reeling in fight or flight mode, as you realize his hands are trembling and the wetness to his eyes isn't from the pool at all. While you could easily continue to scream at them (which, when you're in a rational headspace again, you will feel guilty for), you focus in on Steve.
“Come on, let's go get you dried off, okay?” You offer much quieter, hovering close to him to try to keep you both grounded. He gives another shaky nod and lets you lead him over to the steps and out of the pool.
No one in the group says a word as you wrap him in a towel and then drape one over your own shoulders before sitting both of you down on one of the deck chairs. He continues to tremble slightly beside you as you tuck yourself tightly to his side, resting your head on his shoulder as you try to comfort him (and yourself).
We’re safe here. We’re okay. We’re going to be fine.
Everyone else watches silently as your paperback continues to collect water until it sinks down to the bottom of the deep end.
It was a good day. Until it wasn't.

| Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | FINAL CHAPTER
WC: 1,056
Warnings: Death, killing mentioned, weapons mentioned, a bit sad but good ending, future talk, and hospital stuff mentioned
It was over, but you and the others had lost a lot of people. Thankfully, Steve, Nancy, and Robin killed Vecna, setting him ablaze, and out a window he went. Max was in the hospital, wrapped completely in bandages, head to toe. The doctors said that she was brain-dead and blind on top of that she broke all her bones. Lucas and most of the party, and Max's mom, were with her most of the time. You were there too, but only to say goodbye.
You stood by her bed, looking down upon her as she laid there, tubes and wires were everywhere. You wiped a tear from your eye. You wished you could have known or done something to prevent what had happened. Digging in your bag, you pulled out two caramel apple pops, and settled them down on her bedside table, next to cards and many flowers.
Going into your bag again, with the help from Nancy, she was able to take a picture of your phone from the picture Max took and developed it from her camera. Leaving you with three copies of the picture. You smiled down foundly at it. You loved how Max looked confused and Dustin was slightly behind her in the frame, looking amazed, and Lucas and Mike were off to the other side, confused as ever. Even though Max would never see the picture, you left it there for her, as well as her mother, for letting you stay at their home.
Looking at her one last time, you left the hospital, ready to say goodbye to the others.
~~~
Wrapping her arms around Lucas, you gifted him with the second copy of the picture of Max, him, and the other boys. It reminded him of an almost simpler time. Which he thanked you for, giving you a second hug. Mike, not really one for hugs, just gave you a fist bump. Dustin, when it was his turn, full-on ran up, hugging up tight.
"Thanks for being an amazing cousin." You spoke up, and he chuckled and nodded, pulling away.
I don't want to leave on a sad note. So, I thought I would leave you with some future food before I go. Somehow, thought-out what we've all been through, this thang had kept intact!" You spoke, reaching in your bag and pulling out Push Pops, Ring Pops, Airheads, and Zots. The three boys were thankful, taking the candy in their hands; filling their pockets.
"Y/N?" Dustin asked, gaining your attention.
"Hmm?" You gestured for him to continue.
"Could you tell us one more thing about the future before you go?"
You smiled and nodded, before clearing your throat. "Yes, sure."
"Well, there was this huge trend called 'dabbing'..." You spoke, before dabbing. "It was a huge thing for a couple of years." You laughed as the boys followed and tried to dab too.
"And, every year in the future, they hold d&d convention where hundreds of people come together and play d&d. They also have special guests such as famous authors and artists who show their stuff and sign books! Even this celebrity sometimes shows up to surprise people and play too." You finished, smiling.
Dustin sighed. "That sounds amazing. Thank you, Y/N."
"Thank you for everything, Y/N," Lucas spoke up, and you smiled.
"You're welcome. I'm glad that I ended up here and you guys found me."
You had already said your goodbyes to Robin, Steve, and Nancy, who had left a while back. Turning to Eddie, you stepped forward.
"Come with me, Eddie."
He looked at you, eyes wide. "To the future?"
You nodded, biting your lip as you held onto hope.
"Yes, the police are probably still suspecting you of Chrissy's murder. You could come with me and start over." You spoke, trying to hide your own fear that he would decline.
Eddie looked at you, his face turning red. Him, in the future... With you? Sounded like a dream come true, but his uncle... His friends, and the Hellfire Club. Biting his lip, Eddie looked off to the side. Stepping away, your heart plummeted as Eddie walked over to Dustin, but soared right after.
"Dustin, I hear by giving you the title of Dungeon Master."
Dustin smiled, looking surprised. "What?"
"As our new Dungeon Master, you will now be in charge of the games that are played. And you can have my throne." Eddie continued.
"You're going to go with her?" Dustin asked and Eddie looked back at you with a soft smile.
"Yeah, man. I am." He spoke, before turning back to Dustin.
Placing his hands on his shoulders he continued, "I really like her, man. Besides, the crown had to go to someone soon anyway."
Stepping away, Eddie did a farewell bow before spinning on his heel and wrapping his arm around you. You walked past the high school as you led Eddie to where you thought the hole in the wall was. But, when you got to the place where you remembered entering, it was nowhere to be seen. Panic ran through your veins before Eddie pointed to the small stream, looking down, you saw a hole, big enough to jump through. Looking in, you could see the sidewalk below.
Looking up to Eddie, you took his hand in yours.
"Are you ready?" You asked and Eddie nodded with a smirk.
"More than I'll ever be, babe."
Taking a deep breath, you jumped. Your stomach dropped as you fell, hitting the pavement. Rolling over, you lay there, looking up at Eddie who was standing above you, looking up at you through the hole. You sat up, groaning, you'd definitely have a few bruises here and there. You watched as Eddie jumped through, landing as well, thankfully it wasn't as far as a fall. Grabbing his hand like in the trailer, you helped him up.
You smiled with complete joy as you looked around. Seeing all the familiar sights and smells. There across the street was Starbucks and besides that Barnes & Noble. A beautiful sight. Eddie squeezed your hand, gaining your attention. You looked up at him and smiled as he leaned down, kissing your lips softly.
Yeah... This was his future.
In Hawkins, the lake hole dimension shimmered and sparkled before disappearing from existence completely.
Meet Cassie
Main Master list
Meet Cassie Master list
Synopsis: What happens when a student transfers to Hawkins High?. What if she is hiding a big secret that could change everything she managed to hide from others. (Begins during season 2 after Steve gets his heartbroken)
Meet Cassie Chapter 3
Warnings: Probably bad writing but nothing else
It had been two to three weeks since the first day of her job and she woke up early hoping to make it on time to open the shop. After she got to work wearing the uniform she noticed Robin and Steve also entering the place. Cassie met Robin before she walked to the Gap section ignoring Steve calling out to her.
Sometime go by and as Cassie kept working Dustin spots her, he just came back from his summer camp. “Hey Cassie!, i’m glad you got the job” he says to her ad soon as they hug each other. “Thank you Dustin, how was the Camp?” She asked as he begin following her around the store. “Well, i have a girlfriend n-“ before he could finished Cassie turned around to look at him surprised.
“Yes. And guess what? She is hotter than Phoebe Kates” Dustin added. Cassie patted his head to show how happy she is for him. “Where’s Steve?” He asks her out of a sudden, she gives him directions to Scoops Ahoy before a customer tried to ask her for help.
Within a couple minutes Dustin was telling Steve about the Russian Spy message. Lunch time came and Cassie decided to spend sometime with Robin, but when Cassie barged in on the trio she saw them talking about Russians. “What is going on?” She asked them as Robin explained the whole situation before snatching the recorder from Steve. ‘We need help Cassie, maybe you can help us decode this” Robin asked her as a favour. “Robin you know I’ll always help you,’ Cassie took the recorder and listened to the message “ you guys leave this to me and work, as soon as i figure out something I’ll let you know” she added before running off back to work with the recorder.
Couple of hours go by and a new shipment arrived at the Gap Store section. Cassie was the one to receive it and she noticed the cat on the man’s cap ‘Silver Cat’ a part of the clue. She mentally patted herself on the back before running off to Scoops Ahoy. “Robin, ROBIN!!” Cassie shouted getting her attention, she pulled Robin through the door and told her what she found. “Good job Cassie, but next time don’t go shouting from across the entrance. That’s Steve’s job” Robin joked. Cassie and Robin then looked at the other clues and Robin realised what the message for, and as soon as Steve and Dustin came back to Scoops Ahoy Cassie explained the message behind the audio. Steve gave her a high five which she returned forgetting the fact that she promised herself to be far away from him.
Unbeknownst to them their other friends also had issues, El and Max found out that Billy could be possessed by Mind Flayer while Joyce and Hopper were kilometres away from Hawkins with Russian Scientists Alexei and Will, Mike and Lucas were dealing with ‘girl problems’ and sharing them with Eddie while Jonathan, Nancy were dealing some fertiliser problem
Dustin, Steve and Robin made a plan to meet at the rooftop that night, Cassie being the one to make sure they are safe decided to tag along. Hours went by and Scoops Ahoy were closing so they all met Cassie at the Gap from where they found a shortcut to the roof. Putting on the raincoats they peeked at the men entering and leaving with some shipment, the gang also noticed armed Russian guards and Dustin accidentally dropped his binoculars alerting the guards. Steve held Cassie’s hand as they all ran back down and not get caught, Robin notices how they act around each other and smirk at Cassie who fake gags at Robin.
“Okay so how do we get inside?’ Dustin asks “i could just sneak us in’ Steve suggests “yeah and get us all killed” Cassie says looking at Steve who rolls his eyes at her. “Okay but seriously let me handle the way in. I have someone that could help us” Robin lets them know as she walks away from them towards her block. Steve and Cassie decide to drop of Dustin first before they say their goodbyes for the night,
‘So this is it” Steve tells her as he parks the car outside her house but before Cassie could get out of the car Steve holds her hand “I’m sorry i bailed on our date” he tries to say but Cassie cuts him off “it wasn’t a date” Steve sighed before he proceeded to say “once we are done with whatever these Russians are up to, i am taking you out on a proper date that you can’t decline” Cassie rolled her eyes in annoyances “Fine, but only once” she retorted and got out of the car. Before she went inside she turned to look at him and smiled “See you tomorrow Harrington” she said out loud and he smiled looking back at her before driving off.
*Flashback*
‘Who could have though she has powers far different than any one of us” he said to the woman as he laid Cassie down on the strapped bed and injected her with multiple dozes of some enhanced liquid. “DAD!!!!!!!!” Cassie screamed as she felt the electric current on her.
*Flashback Ends*
Cassie woke up sweating at checked the time, it was around 1 am and she was scared to fall back asleep she wanted to escape her past and not get reminded of the torture she had to endure. She decided to tell Robin about her past since Cassie trusted her a lot with anything. But before Cassie could explain anything to Robin there was a knock at the door and Cassie opened it and Robin barged in “You are WHAT?” Robin almost shouted.
Semi-Flayed
Steve Harrington x Reader. Season 3 finale spoilers.
Tumblr media
The floor was cold, the atmosphere chaotic. The screams of your friends were drowned out by the fireworks and snarls of the mindflayer. Despite the noise, you clearly heard Billy, or the Mindflayer rather, whisper, “Stay still, it will all be over soon," his words sent ice through your veins. You struggled against his grasp, but it was no use. Realizing the imminence of your demise, you felt an overwhelming sadness, not even for yourself, but for Steve Harrington, the first and apparently last love of your life. As the “flaying” began, he was the only thing on your mind. You hoped that he would survive this, that he would get out of Hawkins, that he would be happy. You hoped-
“Y/N!” Steve screamed as he blew his cover to run to your side.
This caught the attention of Eleven, who managed to use her powers to throw Billy away from you. She fell back against Mike. The rest of the kids were still blasting the mind flayer with fireworks. Steve used the opportunity to pick you up and carry you away from the action.
“Y/n? Can you hear me? You gotta wake up okay? I did not survive being tortured by Russians only to have you be flayed before I could even-” his voice broke, and before he could continue, he was rounding the corner to where Dustin was.
“Shit. Is she okay?”
“I don’t know. Billy - the mind flayer- how do we know if she? What if she was?” Steve tried, but his heart couldn’t even handle the idea of you being lost to him.
“She wasn’t flayed.”
“How do you know?” Steve asked reluctant to be relieved.
“The hive mind is activated, she would be awake and trying to kill us if she was,” Dustin explained.
“Then why isn’t she waking up?”
“I don’t know Steve, but we have bigger problems right now,” he said gesturing to the fact that they were almost out of Fireworks.
Steve hesitantly left your side to help the others and watched in absolute shock as Billy sacrificed himself. It was only moments later that the mind flayer collapsed. It was over. Jonathan hugged Nancy, Mike went to Eleven, Lucas held Max as she cried, and both Steve and Dustin turned towards you.
“Y/n wake up!” Steve tried shaking your shoulders. He lowered his head to your chest to hear your heart beating and feel your breathing, “Y/n, c’mon, I need you to wake up,” he tried again, sounding more desperate.
Before he could continue, the FBI came running in and they were all escorted out. Steve barely managed to convince the EMT to let him ride with you. He was stuck in the waiting room for what seemed like forever, shrugging off the nurses who offered to check out his injuries. Dustin, Mike, Nancy, and Jonathon came in, gathering in silence waiting for any news. The worst part for Steve was when your mother showed up, he had never felt more guilty than when he lied to her about what happened.
Eventually, the doctor came out with a flustered look on his face. He asked for your mom, and Steve quickly stood to join them. The doctor protested, but your mom assured him that Steve should come with her.
“So, I don’t know how to tell you this, but as far as we can tell there is nothing physically wrong with your daughter. She is seemingly in a coma with no cause. As such, there is nothing medically we can do other than sustain her condition if you choose to do so,” he then turned to Steve, “Can you run me through what happened again?” Steve managed to recount his story, trying to ignore your mother's sobs. As soon as he finished, he exited the room in shock, he sunk down to the floor, struggling to breathe, replaying the doctor's words over and over again in his head. His chest was filled with immense pain at the thought of losing you.
He sat there a while trying to calm himself down before forcing himself off the wall and back to the waiting room, where Will, Mrs. Byers, and Eleven had joined the others. All eyes went to him expectantly, but with one look at him Dustin said what they were all thinking, “Shit..."
Steve repeated what the doctor had said, Nancy pulled him into a comforting hug. While the others started brainstorming. There was an hour of outrageous theories until finally, Will realized something, “She wasn’t completely flayed, but the process was definitely initiated.”
“Obviously,” Dustin chimed in.
“But what is flaying? It’s like your identity being ripped away from you and replaced with the host mentality,” Will continued.
“So maybe Y/n’s soul or whatever was separated. Nothing medically wrong with her, because that’s not a physical connection” Mike added.
“So in other words, we have to jumpstart the connection again,” Lucas agreed, and then all eyes shifted to El.
“Do you think you could try to find her? Like you did Billy or Heather?” Mike asked.
“I can try,” El nodded.
Dustin walked over to where Steve was laying with his head in Mrs. Byers' lap. She ran her fingers through his hair like she had for her sons so many times, mind wandering to Hopper. Steve looked so broke, like he had given up any hope.
“We need to get into Y/n’s room, we think we know how to fix her,” Dustin announced.
It was like that swiped a switch in Steve, and he popped up at once, “What do you mean?”
Dustin explained everything to Steve and Mrs. Byers, and then again in layman's terms. From there the whole group formed a plan. Mrs. Byers and Nancy would go distract your mom. Dustin, Mike, and Will would distract the nurses. Steve and El would sneak into your room, while Jonathon kept watch. For once, everything went smoothly.
El was searching the cabinets for something to cover her eyes with, and Steve handed her the red ascot from his Scoops uniform. She went to your side and took your hand, instantly being transported into your consciousness.
It was dark, unlike anything she had ever experienced before. Every step she took was echoing, the entire reality was glitching in and out, but there was no sign of you.
“Y/n?” she called out.
The blackness would flash to a scene of you and then back to the nothingness, “Y/n, can you hear me?” El tried again, “I need you to focus on my voice, and I can bring you back. I’ll bring you back home, back to Steve.”
At the mention of Steve, the glitching stopped and El could see you know for the first time, you laid on the ground folded into yourself. You were pale and shaking, looking only a moment away from death. As she got closer she could hear you softly repeating, “Please don't, I'm sorry.” There was no indication that you knew she was there. She touched you lightly on the shoulder, but it didn’t phase you.
“Y/n? We need to get out of here, I need your help,” she tried, again receiving no response. The glitching started again, each time putting more and more distance between the two of you. El knew that you wouldn’t survive it much longer.
In the hospital room, Steve watched as blood trickled down Eleven’s face. He didn’t know why it was taking so long. He tried to get an idea of what was happening through the one-sided conversation that he was hearing, but even that was being drowned out by his fear of losing you, What if this didn’t work? The lights started flickering, the machines in the room going nuts, and then suddenly Eleven called his name, “I need you to talk to her, to bring her back.”
“What does that even mean?”
“Steve, we don't have time, just talk to her!”
“Okay….Uhm...Y/n? It’s Steve. Your boyfriend,” he started, feeling extremely uncomfortable, before his emotions took over. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t there to protect you. I’m here now though, and I need you to come back to me. I need you to wake up, cause you are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I don’t want to lose you. Not now, not ever. Please Y/n. I love you so much, please wake up." As he finished, everything went black, the entire hospital lost power.
In your head, every nightmare you had ever had was playing through your mind. You were cold and afraid, feeling lost beyond anything you have ever felt. Whatever was happening to you it was killing you, you could feel it draining you. A strange numbness started to overtake you. You weren’t giving up, you were running out of fight. Just as you were trying to prepare yourself for whatever would come next, you heard a familiar voice, “Okay….Uhm...Y/n? It’s Steve. Your boyfriend.” Hearing his voice made everything stop. A warmth filled you, and you forced your eyes open, seeing Eleven.
"El?" you asked weakly.
“You’re going to be fine, I’m here,” she reassured, moving towards you and taking your hand.
The next thing you remember was hearing Steve’s voice, “Are you okay?” he asked, you forced your eyes open to see who he was talking to.
“I’ll be fine,” Eleven reassured him, wiping her nose.
“Everything was going crazy in here and then the power went out...Is she okay now?"
Suddenly Eleven’s face lit up, “Why don’t you ask her yourself?”
You had never seen Steve turn around so quickly in his life, a wide smile on his face as he practically dove onto your bed holding you like his life depended on it. “Nice to see you too,” you laughed. God did he love that laugh, and that smile, and you.
“I am so glad that you are okay,” he sighed, allowing himself to relax a little for the first time since he had found out about the Russian code from Dustin.
“Are you okay?” you asked running your finger lightly across his cheek. His eye was swollen and undoubtedly painful. His lip was busted and his nose was also bruised and swollen. In other words, he looked like he got into a fight with his hands tied behind his back.
He put his hand over yours and pulled it down to his chest over his heart as he had done so many times before, “It’s worse than it looks, I promise. I’m just glad you're okay.”
You were going to ask him what happened but were interrupted by the kids coming in excitedly. They were vividly telling you everything that happened after you were “Semi-flayed” as Will had coined it. You listened to every word, happy to know that it was all over. Their commotion gained the attention of the nurse, who proceeded to kick everyone out. Well, everyone but Steve who was practically glued to your side.
She went back to find the doctor and notify your mother, promising to bring back the ice that you requested for Steve’s eye. There were more happy reunions, followed by another round of tests, and finally, you were discharged. Joyce took Will, Jonathan, Dustin, and Lucas home. Nancy took Mike and Eleven back to her house. Your mom went back to your house and you went with Steve to his.
You both were exhausted but found it hard to sleep.
“What happens now?” you asked innocently.
“What do you mean?”
“How do we move forward from this? I mean nothing can ever really be the same can it?”
Steve thought for a moment, “I think we grieve and heal, then we start looking for the little victories again until this is nothing more than a memory.”
You nodded, “I love you, Steve Harrington,” you spoke softly.
You missed the grin that spread across his face before he kissed your forehead, “I love you too.”
You laid like that for a while, it didn’t take Steve long to fall asleep. You thought about what he said. Tomorrow would be hard, and the day after that too, but eventually your life would become some type of normal again. You shifted to look at his face, careful not to wake him. You felt a sense of relief, knowing that as long as the two of you had each other, you could work through the rest.
n/a: post season 3 spoilers!! you’ve been warned!
March 22nd, 1987
6:37 pm
“Lucas, I don’t even care if it’s Will’s birthday, so help me if you crash this car I’m making Eleven open the gate and feed you to the Demodogs,” Dustin yelled from the front seat of the Henderson’s van with the rest of the group piled in the back.
“El can’t do that anymore, genius.” Max had her hands clasped in Eleven’s lap.
“I have my license, Dustin. Stop freaking out,” Lucas groaned but still reduced his speed by a few miles.
“Lie-sense?” Eleven looked to Max.
“Can we please stop arguing?” Mike hollered over the shouting from the back of the van, as well as Max’s arm stretching across the console to crank the volume louder on the radio.
The party had decided to celebrate Will Byer’s sixteenth birthday in the most acceptable way possible: laser tag. The boys had outgrown Dungeons & Dragons—for the most part—but that didn’t stop them from pooling their money and planning on spending the night shooting each other with lasers and eating junk food like children; if anything it brought back the nostalgia of their middle school antics. The girls, on the other hand, didn’t care for the game as much—although Eleven had a difficult time wrapping her head around the entire idea of laser tagging—and they only went for the sake of Will and to spend time together.
The van slowly turned into the parking lot of the laser tag center and the chatter subsided.
“Is this what you wanted for your birthday?” Mike turned to Will. The other boy gave a shy smile and nodded. No matter how many weeks since they’d announced their relationship to the party and their parents—even realizing it themselves—Will’s affectionate gestures made Mike’s heart beat a little faster, and his eyes linger on the boy’s face a little longer. He wasn’t used to it yet, he’d never been in a real relationship. And his smile is driving me mad.
Will took Mike’s hand and pulled him out of the last row of seats. As he jumped down from the van Mike’s eyes flickered to his shorts. Only briefly. Were they always that..short? His heart leapt from his chest and he looked away, embarrassed, only to find their intertwined fingers. Will caught Mike’s flustered expression.
“What?” he laughed and held up their hands, “Do you want me to stop?”
“No!” Mike said, his face reddening. “Uh, I mean, you don’t have to. Sorry, it’s just all so new-“
“Hey! Birthday boy! Get over here! You too, stupid,” Max called, pointing to the Polaroid camera in her hands while the rest of the group huddled around the front entrance for the photo.
Will smiled up at the dark haired boy and lead them over to the others. Max held the camera out in front of her as the rest of the group filed behind her, grinning. Will snaked his hand over Mike’s shoulders and Eleven draped her arms around Max from behind.
“Cheese!”
“Mike, stop looking at Will, look at the camera,” Lucas snapped.
They all laughed as the light flashed.
“I took a few, so you all get a copy.” Max let the film develop for a few seconds and handed them each a photo. Mike took one and before he slid it into his pocket he showed it to Will, both staring at their cheeky grins. He already knew where he’d keep the photo—on the bulletin board in his bedroom, amongst ticket stubs, poems and sketches Will had done, and photos of the group when they were younger; right next to the many polaroids he’d snapped of Will. A collage of his hazel eyes. His beautiful, bright eyes.
“Cute, Mikey,” Will whispered. Was he talking about the picture? Or him?
Will briefly touched Mike’s shoulder then caught up with the rest of them, leaving him to stare at the smiles on the film, hiding his blush.
7:02 pm
“Boys against girls!”
“How is that fair?” Eleven hissed, “It’s just the two of us.”
“We can join a group that’s already in there,” Will added.
“You’re all such a headache. Let’s just split it into two groups. Me, Mike and Dustin on the red team. Will, Lucas and Eleven on blue. Deal?” Max counted off on her fingers.
Mike looked around the area as the others went with their teams and pulled on the correct vests and guns.
“Need some help?” Max asked and went to her girlfriend’s side, she was holding the gear in her arms with a startled expression like she was handling a bomb. She giggled as Max guided the heavy vest over her head and adjusted it to her small waist. Eleven watched it all in wonder, then looked up at her face.
“Pretty,” She said to Max and leaned in for a hug, their pink cheeks pressed close.
“See Will? It’s that simple,” Dustin whispered loudly and then chuckled while he watched the girls. Will punched Dustin in the arm and his eyes quickly met Mike’s from across the neon lit waiting room.
Will was about to say something to him, not in words. In his stare. But the booming voice from the overhead speaker filled the room.
“Game begins in five,” The announcer said.
“Alright. I’m going to go with my team. You remember the rules?” Max had her hands on Eleven’s shoulders, staring into her eyes.
Mike tried to make Will look again, but he was talking to Dustin as they headed into a different room. What was he going to say? What was so simple?
Eleven pointed to Max’s glowing chest, “Shoot the red vests. Hide. Be quiet.”
“See? You’ll do great,” Max hugged her one last time and went over to the door, “But, I am going to win.”
“We’ll see about that, Mad Max.” Lucas shouted and patted their shoulders companionably.
A buzzer sounded as the main doors opened; Mike’s team rushed inside to station themselves around the maze. The arena was pitch black save for the neon lights across the carpeted floor and a constellation of yellow artificial stars on the ceiling. He knew that Will’s team was somewhere on the opposite side, lurking in the shadows. Waiting to stake the perfect moment to strike. The visual made Mike’s heart race and he was drowning in worry.
He could only think of Will. It’s gonna be just like that time at the arcade. Just like Halloween. He’s gonna be walking and everything’s fine until someone jumps out and it triggers a memory in his mind. What if he can’t control it, and the figure in front of him suddenly turns into a Demogorgon? Or the Mind Flayer in his head?
Mike crept around the curved bend in the maze and quietly ducked into a dark alcove to think. A shout suddenly echoed and floated up into the air, the resonant cry drifting to Mike’s ears. To anyone else the sound only meant that someone had gotten caught off guard and a laser to the chest.
What if that’s Will? Is he okay?
Mike sat up slowly, hoping to find Will and make sure he was safe; he turned his head around the edge of the alcove and in the sound of slamming plastic someone crashed into him. He staggered back, registering the face.
“Oh. Will, thank God. I was going to see-“
Before he could get out the last of his sentence Will took the barrel of his laser gun and pinned Mike back against the alcove wall.
He couldn’t speak.
Mike only watched Will draw his lips up to his mouth, frozen in surprise. Will squeezed the trigger as their lips parted at the same time, as though they’d wanted this from the start. He kissed Will back and shuddered when he felt a brush of those teeth along the front of his flushed lips; Mike dropped his gun and grabbed at his face, embracing the startling sensation when Will pressed himself closer, trapping him. Oh God, don’t move. Don’t pull away, Mike pleaded.
The trigger went off and Mike’s vest buzzed and filled the space with flashing red light—but Will didn’t let go. He just rooted him in place by the tip of the gun, its weight carrying all throughout the plastic front of his vest and into his pounding heart.
Will sighed into his open mouth, making Mike shudder involuntarily before he moved his body away. The air was filled with the sound of their shaky breathing.
“That’s what I wanted for my birthday,” Mike’s heart sped up at his gruff, breathy voice.
Mike reached for him again, “W-Wait-“
“Shhh,” Will whispered and placed his hand on Mike’s face, smirking, “You’re dead, Wheeler.”
He rushed out of the alcove with a smile plastered on his face before Mike could run after him. The vest shook once more, signaling his loss, before the color faded and died. Mike slid down onto the floor and brought his fingers to his hot cheeks. His lips started to burn as the last few minutes replayed in his head, making his breathing turn ragged again and his stomach twist back into messy, feverish knots.
Mike felt the pulse roar in his ears, still staring at the empty space where Will was only moments before. Where he’d just kissed him.
What just happened?
8:49 pm
“Our team,” Eleven started, staring hopelessly out the car window into the night, “Lost.”
“Yep,” Dustin sighed, “That’s what happens when you’re up against the best.”
Mike ignored their arguing and stared out the back window at the stars. They covered the dark sky, too many to count, thousands of glittering and radiant sparks—they reminded him of Will’s eyes. So full of amber light and happiness, no matter the circumstance.
“Hey.” Mike flinched when there was a tap on his shoulder. Any touch from him and Mike turned into a live wire, his lungs forgot how to work and his heart thrashed wildly inside his aching chest. He longed to let Will’s touch linger, to sustain the burning, fluttering sensation.
“Yeah?” He whispered, taking the time to even his breathing before he looked at Will.
His eyes flickered between Mike’s, searching his face. “Was that alright?”
“Was what alright?”
“Back in the arena..you know..”
Mike’s cheeks burned tomato red as he remembered the softness of his lips and quickly murmured, “Oh, yeah. That was really nice Will, I just-“
“What?” He leaned in, as if getting closer would help to understand. Mike’s body tensed at the hurt beginning to show on Will’s face.
“It..kinda caught me off guard.”
Will paused. “Do you want me to ask you next time? If it’s okay?”
Mike nodded.
Will smiled at their bodies, intentionally placed as far apart as possible. “Can I hold your hand?”
He nodded again and Will slipped his hand into Mike’s, letting his fingers trail absently along the front of his knuckles.
“Mike, this is your stop,” Lucas said from the driver’s seat. Will held his hand tighter.
“Could I come too?” Will asked him quietly, “My mom wouldn’t mind.”
“Of course,” Mike hid his red face as he climbed over the back seat to the car door.
“Aight. Happy birthday, Will,” Dustin said and waved at the two.
He gave Dustin a shy smile. “Thanks, guys. It was really fun.”
“Don’t do anything stupid!” Max shouted out the window as the van sped away.
They stared at each other for a moment, in the quiet of the night, standing in front of the Wheeler’s unlit driveway. Until the front door swung open and Nancy was calling from the porch.
“Guess we better go in then,” Mike whispered, caught up in Will’s gaze.
He looked away, grinning. “Yeah.”
9:02 pm
“There’s so many photos here,” Will inspected the cork board on Mike’s wall. When they’d went inside Mike opened the window above his bed to let the peaceful night sounds in, and allow the stars outside to watch.
“Wait a minute,” Will touched a piece of paper tacked on the board, “I drew this.”
“I love your art, Will. How could I not hang it up?” Mike smiled up at him, so full of affection. He’s adorable when he’s flustered. Will muttered something under his breath and his face turned pink.
“Oh, right!” Mike got off his bed and joined his side. He handed over the Polaroid photo from his pocket, “You can pick the spot to put it up if you want.”
Will studied the picture, as if seeing it for the first time. He was close, close enough that Mike could see every detail of his face, see the curve of his lips that had fit so perfectly in his own.
“You’re so cute.” He pointed to Mike in the photo, then tore a piece of tape to hang the Polaroid next to a small drawing. A pencil sketch of Mike, with a caption at the bottom in Will’s handwriting: my Paladin.
“Y-you’re uh, pretty cute too,” Mike stammered. When Will finished hanging the picture he turned around and followed him to the bed, his head tipping up so their eyes met. The air suddenly felt very warm as they sat chest to chest—silent except for the crickets outside—until Will spoke softly.
“Mikey, can I ask something?” His hazel eyes never left his face.
Mike didn’t realize he’d been holding his breath.
“Anything.”
Will was leaning back on his hands, and decidedly scooted closer. “Can you..hold me please?”
His eyes widened. Will’s request was so gentle that it made Mike’s heart burn for him. The desire to have him in his arms. “Of course I will.”
Mike took his hands and wrapped them around his neck, leaning them back on the comforter, drawing him closer than they’d ever been before. Will nestled his cheek to Mike’s chest as he faced the stars out the open window, his legs eased down to rest snug by his sides.
“Is this okay?” Will asked, tilting his head up so he could nestle into Mike’s neck. His soft brown hair brushed Mike’s skin and sent goosebumps racing up his arms. He closed his eyes and rubbed Will’s back in comforting circles.
“It’s perfect,” He said.
Will yawned. “This was such a great birthday.”
“Yeah?”
“Duh, I had my first kiss.” Will murmured, his fingers under Mike’s neck started to play with his dark curls.
“Tired?” Mike asked, his hands never leaving his back.
“Only a little,” He replied with a drowsy smile against his chest.
He laughed and put a hand gingerly on Will’s face to move a strand of hair. In the minutes that followed he let Will fall asleep while he studied the stars outside, listened to the heartbeat of the boy on top of him, the drawing on the cork-board. The title scrawled beneath.
“My Cleric,” Mike whispered to the stars.
Set Them On Fire
Today, you need the sun. You need it hot and bright, to offer you protection, to burn anything that comes out of the flames. But there are clouds in the sky, threatening to hide that damn ball of fire. Bouncing your leg, the only thing keeping you down to Earth is Billy's hand on your thigh, trying to calm you down. You had to call in sick today, telling Anthony both of you got a cold and passed on to the other. And now the manager of the pool knows you're living together. But it doesn't matter. This matters, setting those monsters on fire and being done with it.
“Relax, babe.” He says, squeezing your thigh a little, making you look over him. “It'll work.”
“It will.” You tell this more to yourself than to him.
Half an hour later you reach the only hole left, joining the party who gathers a few feet away, in the protection of the threes. When you step out of the car, you feel a rather cold breeze, the one that announces a storm. Max hands you the bat, which you gladly take, holding it tight. The kids are getting things ready. Well, they're helping Eleven, you're not sure how since she's the only one with superpowers, as she searches through the woods, making sure all the Demodogs are in the tunnels.
The idea is to use one of the robots to take a stick of small dynamite into the tunnels, so when it explodes, the fire will spread through the whole thing quickly, since it's basically soaking in gasoline. When Eleven finally stands up, taking off the fabric that was covering up her eyes, everyone starts moving.
“They're all in there. They already started digging again. We gotta do it now.” She says, and immediately, Mike gets the small robot ready.
“This takes thirty seconds to blow up, more than enough time to get in the there, drive it inside, and run back here.” He announces, standing up to his feet. “Who will go there?”
You were expecting then to be nervous, to push it around, not wanting to get too close to the hole, not when the clouds are threatening to give the Demothings a chance to hunt in the daylight. But no. They start arguing about who gets to go.
“Seriously.” You mumble, running a hand through your hair and pacing around. You just need this day to end. You just need the fire to catch.
“Hey, hey.” Billy reaches you as you walk away from the others, not wanting to listen to their arguments. The guys are fun to be around, and they manage to get a laugh out of you despite being sad about Jason, despite being anxious about the Demodogs, but now you just can't, not today. There's too much at stake. “Come here.” Billy hugs you, your arms embracing his midsection, head on his chest. He has this thing, you don't know how, you don't even know if he actually tries. But when Billy hugs you, the rest of the world vanishes. It doesn't matter how dangerous it is, Billy makes it all disappear.
“Everything I want to do right now is–”
“This is not the place or time to make out. Let's do this!” Hopper's thunder voice cuts you short, and you take a couple of seconds to swallow the anger before letting go of Billy.
“Let's go. It'll be over soon.” He bends over to place a soft kiss on your lips before taking your hand and walking over the party again.
Lucas won, he gets to put the robot near the hole. You watch as he does it, lighting up the dynamite and running back here as Mike moves the thing forward, making it disappear inside the tunnel. Dustin is counting down, and you close your eyes, your body frozen.
“Seven, six, five, four–” It happens, a small explosion followed by wild, high flames taking over the exit. It makes a weird noise as the fire spreads, but it soon vanishes, fading away as it takes over the tunnels underground. “I must have miscalculated.”
“It's working,” Eleven says, focused, blood coming out of her nose. “I can feel them dying.”
“Great,” Hopper says, a gun in hand, ready to act if things go south.
You're allowing yourself to relax now, despite the clouds covering up the sunlight, and the thunder that can be heard somewhere from above. The rain won't put down the fire, it'll keep burning for several hours, until all the gas is consumed. All the Demodogs will be nothing but ashes by then.
Several minutes pass by, and a light rain starts falling. Summer storms are unpredictable, they come suddenly, and can either last ten minutes before the sun comes out again or two days. But it doesn't matter. Nobody seems to be bothered by the water so there's no reason for you to overthink.
“Can't we go now? It's done, isn't it?” Robin asks, removing some of her hair that's glued to her face. “It's pouring.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Steve answers, his eyes, like everybody else's, on the flames, coming out of the hole. “I think this is it.”
Eleven breaks out of her state, taking a deep breath and turning around. “I think we can go.”
You're relieved, if the words can even express how you feel right now. You're grip on the bat loosens, and you lay it on your shoulder.
“Home, then. A little party to celebrate?” Steve suggests, and they murmur in response, obviously excited.
But a groan, a snarl, building up from a low whisper to a loud, disgusting noise shut them up. Slowly, all eyes turn back to the hole, and your heart stops when you see it. When you actually see the thing making that noise.
As it crawls out of the tunnel, yelling, groaning in pain, it's skin falling apart, you immediately recognize it, despite never seen the thing. This Demodog just evolved into the full thing, eight feet tall massive Demogorgon. Now, the rain is a problem. Out here, with the water hitting its skin, the fire is being put out.
“Hopper, start shooting!” Joyce yells, and Hopper moves, blasting that thing, and despite some painful growls, it also gets its attention, and now, it's looking over here. At you. And when it starts moving, the commotion starts. Everyone who knows how to use a gun has one, Billy included, and the shooting begins.
You wish you could be brave. You really wish you had the courage you had when Neil attacked Billy. To just go there and beat the shit of this... This... Thing. But instead, you freeze, unable to move, just looking at the monster, and it comes towards you.
“(Y/N)!” Billy's voice reaches you at the same moment you feel his arm around your waist, pulling you back. “C'mon.”
You don't know what comes to you. The kids are so brave, they have been dealing with these things for a while now, and you just... You can't move. You can't think. Your eyes can't believe what they're seeing, your legs won't obey your commands. You're just... Paralyzed.
“Take her away. Now.” Someone says, and you feel yourself moving when the Demogorgon jumps, moving way too fast for something so big, landing right among you, splitting the group in half.
It's close now, close to you. It lowers his head, not seeming to the bothered by the many bullets hitting its skin. You see it, looking right at you with no eyes, and its head opens, slowly, and you feel like you're inside a nightmare, the worst nightmare you could ever imagine.
It happens fast, and it snaps you out of your numbness. Billy pushes you away, raising his gun, shooting the creature until there are no more bullets left. Then you see it, you feel it, the thing ready to jump over Billy. That makes you move. From your state, you hold the bat with all the strength left in your body, stepping forward and swinging it right into the Demogorgon's head. The nails pierce through its already sore skin, burned, peeling off, and when it moves back, flinching away, you pulled with it, only letting go of the bat when you stumble down, a sharp pain on your knee and right forearm.
“Everybody get back now!” Eleven shouts and you're quickly pulled up, right into Billy's arms as he moves both of you away from the thing.
Holding on to Billy, you see as Eleven steps forward, furious, raising both her hands. Then, the impossible, which insists on reminding you it's not impossible anymore, happens again. The flames start flowing out of the tunnel, like a fireball, creeping through the woods, leaving a trail of fire on its way here. On its way to the Demogorgon. In a violent push, Eleven lowers her arms, and the fire swallows the creature, which makes the most horrifying sounds you ever heard. It tries to fight it, to run, to attack, but by the looks of it, Eleven is holding it back too.
The groans are deafening, and you can't look anymore, hiding your face on Billy's neck. It only gets worse, louder, and the rain falling on you feels hot. Then, it stops, and before you can process what happened, you're pushed back in a wave of power, both you and Billy hitting the ground hard. Your first instinct is to look at the monster, sitting up abruptly, checking if its anywhere near you. But you see nothing. Nothing but ashes falling down with the rain. It's gone, disappeared.
“Damn it.” Billy groans and your attention falls on him.
“Billy.” With a hand caressing his cheek, you quickly check for any injuries. “Are you alright, baby?”
“I will be after I wash the Demogorgon's ashes off.” By the comment, he's ok, so you lower yourself to kiss him, over and over again, until you hear someone clearing their throat behind you.
“We're all fine too, thanks for asking.” Robin comments.
“Oh, shit.” You mumble, stumbling back to your feet and almost falling back down on the process. “Maxine? Dustin, Steve... All the rest. Mike? Lucas, Joyce...” As you look around, you mentally count, making sure everyone is alive and well.
“Everyone is here.” Eleven says, a tired smile on her lips as Mike hugs her. “They're gone. All of them. I double-checked.”
Breathing out, you run a hand through your hair, a laugh escaping your lips when Billy hugs you, lifting you up. “I told you, princess. We'll be just fine.”
The drive home is chaotic. Everyone is dirty with rain, mud, dirt, and Demogorgon ash. And also blood, since you save a graze on your forearm and a wound on your knee.
Back home, as Lucas and Maxine fight over who will get to shower first, Billy lets you go first, as usual, and when you're done, you have to go and pacify the young couple. Lucas decided to let Maxine go first, and the fighting ends. As you wait for Billy, you clean the wounds, noticing they're not as bad as you feared. Lying down on the bed, you close your eyes, thinking about Jason. You only wish it all happened before, so he'd still be around, but it feels good to know nobody else will get hurt. That you had a part in it, even though it was so tiny.
“So...” Billy says, and you open your eyes when you feel the mattress moving under his weight. “We got our summer back. Whatever is left of it.”
“We still have three weeks until college.” When you notice he's coming to stand above you, you push him back, climbing over him instead. “Then it'll be crazy. Will you really go on with that routine? Drive to Indianapolis Monday morning, drive back here Friday after class?”
“Yeah.”
“It'll be tiring.” You explain, lowering yourself until your face is only an inch away from his.
“Yeah.”
“Are you sure that–”
“Stop trying to make me change my mind about it. I want this crazy, exhausting routine because I want this. Me and you, together. I want this.”
Biting your lip, you hold back a smile. “I love you, Hargrove.”
“Love you too, future Mrs. Hargrove.”
• • •
Life has fallen back into the old pace. Now, only two weeks left of summer, you use your free time to hang with your friends and Billy. You finally feel safe to stay out at night again, but the pain for missing Jason is still very real. You visit his grave once a week at least, mostly with Monica, holding her as she cries. But other than that, the rest is getting better. Steve still teases you, Mike doesn't let go of the incident in his house, Lucas and Maxine keep fighting like a married couple, Joyce and Hopper decided to replace your parents, worrying way too much about your relationship with Billy. Diane comes to visit every once in a while... Life is good, and you're enjoying it.
Today, you just returned home from having lunch with Monica, closing the door shut and throwing the car keys on the table. Billy is on the chest bench, and as you stop to watch, he gives you a look and a wink.
“Almost done here, princess.” He says as you walk closer, raising an eyebrow. “What?”
“Nothing.” You simply say before sitting on his lap, straddling his hips. “Do twenty more.”
“Why do you always find a way to bug me when I'm working out?” He rolls his eyes, not bothering to stop lifting the weight.
“One...” You start, giggling. “Two... Three.”
“I've been here for half an hour. I'm tired.”
“Four. I can see, you're all sweaty. That's disgusting. Five.” Billy fakes an angry face, raising his leg and kicking your back, forcing you to fall against his chest. “Billy!”
You move to stand up, but he presses the bar in your back, trapping you down. “Where do you think you're going?”
“Alright. Let me up.”
“Only if you kiss me.”
“If you don't let me up I won't kiss you for a week.”
“I heard that before. It lasted an hour.”
“Uhm...” You're looking at his lips as he speaks, immediately regretting what you just said. “You're so lucky you're a good kisser.” Giving up that stupid idea, you kiss him, feeling when he puts the weight away, arms coming to hug you.
“What the hell.”
“Ignore them,” Maxine says, and when you raise your head to look, you see as she drags Eleven to her room.
“Now that we were interrupted, let's get ready.” He stands up as he speaks, carrying you with him.
“Ready for what?”
“I told you I'd take you somewhere special. And today is the day so wear something nice.”
It doesn't matter how many questions you make, Billy won't say a thing.
You choose to put on a light blue dress, since he told you to dress up nice, despite not knowing where he's taking you. You were thinking about a restaurant, the mall, one of the cute snack bars, but when we start driving out of town, you don't really know what to expect.
“I'm gonna need you to close your eyes from now on.”
“Why?”
“Just do it. C'mon.”
Giving him an exaggerated eye roll, you do as he says, knowing he'll be checking you. After a couple of minutes, he stops the car, telling you to wait. He then opens the door for you, taking your hand and helping you out. “Can I?”
“No. Wait.” He covers your eyes with both his hands, and you walk carefully. You feel a fresh breeze messing with your hair, the wild smell of the woods filling your nose. “Look now.”
You open your eyes when he removes his hand, and what you see is nothing less than Hawkins, the tiny houses down there, as you stand some feet away from the cliff. A smile immediately spreads through your lips, as you admire your home from afar. “Billy, this is... Amazing.”
“I knew you'd like it.” He hugs you from behind, resting his head on the top of yours. “Since you love this city so much, I thought this would be the right place.”
Furrowing your eyebrows, you turn around to look at him. “The right place for what?”
Smirking, Billy searches for something in the pocket on the inside of his jacket. Raising an eyebrow, you step away, crossing your arms. “I will make the right question this time.” He takes a small, dark blue box. Your eyes go wide and your heart starts drumming in your ears, as your mind tries to process what's happening, telling yourself not to think what you're thinking.
“W-what question?” Stuttering, you keep looking into his eyes as he opens the box, pushing the hair away from your face since the wind is making it fly wildly.
Slowly, very slowly, you lower your stare to the box, now open, and you see two rings. “Right here, with the whole town as my witness, I want to know if you would, someday, be my wife.”
“Yes.” This time, you don't fight it. You can just let the word roll out your tongue. “Yes, baby.”
The smile that comes to his lips it's the most beautiful thing in the whole world. Billy takes your hand, putting the ring on your finger and you do the same soon after. “Was it the right question this time?”
“Shut up and kiss me, Hargrove.” Rolling your eyes, you pull him closer, standing on your toes.
“As you wish, princess.”
The kiss tastes like a promise. Like pure and complete bliss. This is where you're supposed to be, Hawkings, a small town, so different from everything you ever experienced. And, despite the moments of terror you've been through, you'd go through every single one of them a hundred times over if it only meant you'd end up here, with Billy's lips on yours, his arms holding you so close. In your own particular heaven.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 She knew the blood dripping off her feet would attract the hounds.
At this point it didn’t matter if she wanted to give up, she’d be dead either way. The hounds would tear her apart. If they were going to catch her they’ll have to keep up.
Her powers only worked if she had enough energy. After a full night of running, both super sonically and regularly, she was exhausted. The clothes she had escaped with were torn and she had bruises on her body from the times she fell over branches and rocks sticking out of the ground. She knew she would have to find food soon, but she didn’t have any idea of how to get it.
The growl in her stomach went away for just a little bit, then it came back with a painful vengeance. Her days at the lab consisted of being locked in her room or being put into the tank. What little she could remember about her life before was stripped away in a matter of months and the more she thought about it the more her head hurt and she came up empty.
Her vision was going in and out. Her feet felt like lead and she knew she wouldn’t be able to run much longer.
Maybe, she thought, if I just lay down here. I’ll be dead before they find me.
It was an optimistic thought. What she didn’t expect was to feel someone gently picking her up. Her body sunk into him. She couldn’t have been more than 13 years old but she had a number lower than 11...
Hopper turned her wrist over and saw the tattoo on the girls small wrist. A tiny 07 was drawn there, surely she had to have been there before El.
By the time he had gotten back to the cabin El knew he had her and was bringing her home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few months were terrifying for the girl. She couldn’t speak much, just like El when she was first found. After days of trying to feed her and get her to talk it wasn’t until El presented her own tattoo that the girl seemed to relax. The only time she would eat was when El was in the room, the only time she would sleep was when they were both in bed.
Her powers were a struggle. She had to learn she couldn’t use them around other people. And people. The girl had spent her entire life locked away, only seeing other humans if she was useful enough. So being introduced to knew people was terrifying. They soon found out she was probably around 16-17 when they took her in for a check up with a private doctor. Hopper pulled some strings so it was no questions asked, and an adoption paper was formed a few days later.
She found some comfort in Nancy, who took the girl under her wing buying her clothes and teaching her how to keep her hair in order. The (y/c/h) was finally starting to grow out from the horrible buzz cut she had when she was found.
Then she met Jonathan.
At first he thought she hated him, because whenever he was around she would cling to the people she deemed safe. Nancy assured him she would warm up to him eventually, but there was still a voice in his head that said she wouldn’t.
She grew close to Will after he gave her a drawing he had made for her. He carefully explained that it was her in the game that they play. He drew her as an Elf, one with the power of speed, he drew her with long wavy hair that was styled half up half down and a glorious crown on top of her head. She kept the drawing in her bedroom and looked at it before going to bed. Jonathan wouldn’t lie, he was jealous his brother bonded with her before he did. And besides, Will was a few years younger. But still he waited patiently to see how you would react to him.
Slowly you started warming up to him. After a while you started to look curiously at the camera he always carried with him.
”It’s a camera,” he said handing it to her, “Look, place your finger right there, and press it.”
the girl jumped as the flash went off. Jonathan grabbed the picture that popped out of the top of it and shook it a few times. The girl watched in wonder as the picture of Jonathan slowly appeared on the film. She pointed excitedly to it.
”Yes you did a good job!” he smiled. She couldn’t help but smile back.
As time went on Joyce invited the two girls over to their house more often. (Y/n), as Hopper had named her on the fake birth certificate, would wander in to Jonathan’s room to look at the pictures that were scattered on the walls.
”Have you ever listened to music?” Jonathan asked her one day.
She shook her head and looked at the small cassette he had in his hands. He popped it into the radio and she stared with furrowed eyebrows at the machine.
“Not much into rock huh? I guess we can find something you’ll like.”
Slowly, the two grew a friendship. Jonathan made it his personal mission to find out what kind of music (Y/n) would like best and also adjusting to her new life. They eventually landed on (y/f/b), and whenever he knew (Y/n) was coming over he’d have a tape ready for her to listen to. Will would join in occasionally on their music sessions.
They both soon learned how starved (Y/n) was of physical touch. Growing up as an experiment didn’t leave much room for hugs or gentle touches. She’d let Will lay in her lap whenever he wanted and hugs were always exchanged when they saw each other. The first time Jonathan tried to brush her hair out of her face with his hand he saw he flinch, his heart fell and thoughts of what might’ve happened to her to cause that raced through his mind. Soon enough he could reach for her hand without her pulling away. Soon enough she started reaching for his too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jonathan did his best to keep the girl away from Star Court. (Y/n) had stayed home most of that summer. With all the fireworks going off and all the people milling around she didn’t feel safe enough to go out. It wasn’t until the rest of the kids came to the cabin to give El the chance to find the Mind Flayer that she learned about what all the experiments at the lab where truly for.
Billy had found them.
They were trapped inside the mall after everyone split up to complete the mission. Mike frantically spoke into the walkie-talkie trying to get in contact with the Scoops Troop. Eleven moved the car as the mind flayer made its way into the mall, everyone ran to hide. They could hear Dustin finally talking over the walkie-talkie.
The mind flayer stalked around the food court. From her place behind the car (Y/n) could hear it making its way over. El and (Y/n) made eye contact, they both nodded and El’s group ran for cover in the Gap store. The mind flayer heard movement and went to turn and (Y/n) ran and threw a knife, hitting it in the leg to distract it, but by the time it turned around she was gone. (Y/n) ran over to the group and picked El up, they ran to a back hallway trying to get the injured El to safety.
 Billy stalked his way down the hall to the four.
“Billy please, your name is Billy Hargrove you live at-” Max cried before hitting her and knocking her against the wall. Mike stood between him and the girls but it was no use. Before they could even properly react he knocked both Mike and (Y/n) out and took El with him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jonathan found them back there, he woke them up finally and they raced back out to the food court to execute Plan B.
(Y/n) ran back and forth at the first floor, sing rope to tie up the Mind Flayers legs as the others threw fireworks in it’s face to distract it. Soon enough they fan out. With Dustin yelling frantically to close the gate. We all ran for cover and watched in shock as Billy stood up. He faced the Mind Flayer, and when it shot it’s nasty tongue out Billy blocked it from hitting El. Arm after arm reached out and impaled the boy. Max screamed. (Y/n) saw her chance and used the last of her strength to run down and grab El, Mike, and Max to bring them to safety. Finally a big explosion went off from below and everything went dark.
When (Y/n) woke everything was dark. All the lights had went out and the fire department was loading her up onto a stretcher. Jonathan ran up beside her and got onto the ambulance with her.
“Jonathan?” she said meekly.
“I’m right here (Y/n), I’m right here.”
“Where’s El?”
Jonathan paused, “She’s with my mom. She’s safe just injured.”
“Hopper?”
Jonathan didn’t respond. Tears formed in (Y/n)’s eyes as she began to sob.
“(Y/n) I promise you we’ll keep you safe. You’re going to be fine.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was 3 months after the battle of Star Court. Joyce had adopted both El and (Y/n), who still hadn’t fully recovered from the loss of the person who has showed them so much love. (Y/n) had grown closer and closer to Jonathan. Clinging to him after she got out of the hospital. The Byers had finally decided to move. (Y/n) laughed at Max and Lucas’ terrible rendition of The Never Ending Story. She watched as El tried to use her powers once again on the stuffed Koala in the closet.
“Don’t hurt yourself El,” (Y/n) yelled from the living room.
Jonathan walked in from outside with Nancy and sat down beside the girl on the couch.
“Hey. How are you feeling?” he said. He kissed her temple as he wrapped his arm around her.
“Scared,” (Y/n) said.
“Scred? Of moving?”
(Y/n) stared at the floor, “Yeah...”
“We’re going to be okay, we’ll have a fresh start. No one will know where you came from other than Hawkins. They’ll just know you as (Y/n), the girl that’s really fast and has the prettiest smile.”
Their powers were gone. It was hard to adjust to at first. Both (Y/n) and El felt so empty inside, but they knew it was for the best. Maybe they could lead a normal life. (Y/n) slowly became more comfortable with the affection between her and Jonathan. And he began to introduce her to people as his girlfriend. What little (Y/n) knew about relationships all pointed to the fact that she cared about Jonathan. Not in the way that she cares for Will or El, but a different kind of care. She didn’t mind being called his girlfriend.
She heard El’s sobs from the bedroom and left Jonathan’s embrace to make sure she was okay. After reading Hopper’s letter they both sat on the floor sobbing until Joyce told them it was time to go.
Boxes were loaded in to the U Haul and hugs were exchanged among the kids. (Y/n) looked back on the house from the front seat of the car, watching as her friends waved from their spot on their bikes. She smiled through her tears and waved until she couldn’t see them anymore.
“Babe?” Jonathan said.
She turned to look at him.
“This is going to be our new life, away from any monsters in Hawkins. We’ll be back for Thanksgiving, I promise.”
She smiled and buckled in to her seat. She reached for Jonathan’s hand and he pulled it up to his lips to place a gentle kiss on her knuckles. Her heart swelled at the small gesture, before turning to stare at the road ahead.

S.T. REWRITE - S2:E9; Chapter Nine, The Gate - [Pt. 3]
A Will Byers x Reader Series
The survivors turn up the heat on the monstrous force that's holding Will hostage, and Y/n's powers are put to the ultimate test in the process. Eleven makes plans to finish what she started.
Tumblr media
A/n: You might be noticing a lot less 1st person pov, I'm slowing inching away from that since 1st person isn't a strength of mine. I most likely will phase that out altogether, idk, let me know?
Trigger Warnings: Violent racism. Allusions to domestic violence. If you would like/need to skip, I will be putting the usual markers [●●●] before and after. Both of these warnings will fall under the marker. Safe reading, my loves! I care about you all so deeply, and I want you guys to have my stories as an escape so I'm really hating myself that this scene is coming out during all this. Not that it was ever not going on before cuz we all know that's bullshit, but with it all being so amplified right now. Again, I love you all and if you ever need anything 💕💕💕💞💞💞 edit: also brief mention of needles
||3rd Person POV||
Billy Hargrove's car skids to a halt in front of the Byers house, the four tires send gravel up flying. The headlights dim out with a sharp click as he puts the car to sleep, and the rusty car door squeaks as he opens it. He takes the dying cigarette out from between his smirking lips when he sees who is waiting for him on the porch.
"Am I dreaming, or is that you Harrington?"
Steve sighs, tiredly. "Yeah, it's me. Don't cream your pants."
A cocky smirk overtook Billy's face and he shed his coat out of intimidation. Steve stepped off the porch and the two boys walked across the yard until they were directly across from one another.
"Whatya doing here, amigo?" Billy asks.
Steve cocked his head to the side, his arms coming to cross over his chest. "I could ask you the same thing... Amigo."
The cigarette hung loosely from Billy's lips once more, and for a small but lingering moment, he observed Steve trying to get a read on him.
"I'm looking for my step sister. Little birdie told me she was here."
Steve was quick to dawn a mask of surprise. "Huh, that's weird I don't know her."
Billy's face was slowly but surely molding into a wild glare, his brows already knitted together in agitation. He begins gesturing, vaguely.
"Small, redhead. Bit of a bitch."
A lick of anger flickered over Steve but for the kids' sake, he didn't let it show. He merely shrugged in a bored manner.
"Doesn't ring a bell. Sorry, buddy."
Billy shook his head as he glowered at the ground, a twinge of disgust twisted up in his face. He took the cigarette into his hands, and he looks at it for only a second and smacks his lips.
A deep sigh resonates from within his chest, and he steps forward waving a shaky hand in the air.
"You know... I don't know, this...?" He falters, trying to find the appropriate word. "This whole situation, Harrington, I don't know. It's giving me heebie-jeebies."
"Oh yeah? Why's that?"
He takes another drag of his cigarette, letting the smoke fill his lungs and the feeling fuels his rage.
"My thirteen-year-old sister goes missing all day," his cold green eyes were now wide and dilated. Beady almost as he looked at Steve, no longer attempting to hide his fury. "And then I find her with you. In a stranger's house. And you lie to me about it."
His voice is shockingly calm, but lower than usual. A disgusted and hardened scowl contorts his face, and it doesn't ever seem to move. Steve laughs, hoping it doesn't sound as nervous as he is beginning to feel. Luckily, he recovers quickly.
"Man, were you dropped too much as a child, or what?"
The smoke leaves Billy's lungs in a joyous cackle, his tongue flicks across his top set of teeth in excitement and there is a wild and unhinged look in his eyes. Steve didn't know it yet, but he had just said the magic words. He had just pushed the wrong button.
"I don't know what you don't understand about what I just said." Steve finished, watching unsettled as Billy continued to lick his lips excitedly. "She's not here."
Steve felt his confidence rising considerably. Up until Billy inched closer, he then rose up his cigarette, pointing it over his shoulder towards the house.
"Then who is that?"
Steve looks over his shoulder to find four heads crammed together against the window, watching.
Inside, Max, Dustin, Lucas, and Mike threw themselves down against the couch as fast as they could.
"Shit!" Cried Dustin, he looks between his friends hopefully. "Did he see us?"
"Oh, shit," Steve mumbles, turning back. "listen--"
Steve was on the concrete in seconds, Billy stalking forward to tower over him.
"I told you to plant your feet." He spits.
His right leg rears up and in one swift motion, his boot collides with Steve's abdomen, knocking the breath out of him.
The front door slams against the wall, shaking the frame and the four cowering bodies standing across the room.
[●●●]
His eyes narrow upon seeing Lucas among the bunch. Eerily enough, despite his bigoted fury, his face is completely devoid of emotion.
"Well, well, well," he seethes, one long arm throwing the door slammed behind him. "Lucas Sinclair, what a surprise."
He marches forward, and every thud of his boot's rubber soles against the linoleum is like a boom in his ears. He is already backing away, Max the only one brave enough to stay by his side. Billy's attention is redirected to her.
"I thought I told you to stay away from him, Max?"
"Billy, go away."
Her voice is shaking but she holds her ground. His voice lowers to a terrifying and threatening volume as he spits at her coldly.
"You disobeyed me," he says, in almost a sad and disappointed tone. "You know what happens when you disobey me."
"Billy--"
"I break things,"
The second the words left his tongue, he whirls on Lucas picking him up by the scruff of his jacket and carries him all the way to the kitchen wall. He cries out, fighting against the iron grip, but it does little help. Terrified screams of protest erupted from the other three kids, but he doesn't listen.
"Get off of me, you--!"
Billy shoves Lucas farther into the shelf to enunciate his point and he leans in closer, teeth gritted.
"If Maxine won't listen to me, maybe you will," Lucas doesn't give up fighting, his legs and arms still struggle for freedom but what little confidence he had waned as Billy leaned in closer. "Stay away from her."
Lucas feels himself being pulled forward before being thrown back into the shelf again and he grimaces in pain.
"STAY," his head begins to tremor, his rage overcoming his body. "away from her. Do you hear me?"
His heart slamming against his ribcage as he stares at Billy and his furious scowl, Lucas takes several shallow breaths and grits his teeth right back. "I said get off of me!"
Lucas's knee flies up and connects with Billy's groin, and the young Hargrove stumbles back with a tremendous groan. He's doubled over, hands gripping his legs and squeezing in pain till his skin goes completely white. Slowly his head rises revealing his now purple face, it's decorated with several thick blue veins on his forehead. His groans of pain evolved into furious growls, and his beady eyes are locked on Lucas.
"You are SO dead, Sinclair!" He roared. "You're dead."
[●●●]
A hand landed on Billy's shoulder, ripping him around on his heel to find Steve with disgust written all over his face.
"No," he spits, cocking one arm back. "You are!"
Steve's fist collided with Billy's nose, sending the other teenager back several paces once again doubling over. He watched as Billy straightened up, an odious and maniacal cackle erupting from his throat as he wore a wicked grin. Blood began to pour from his nose, and he licked his lips excitedly. Behind them, Lucas had scurried away and into the waiting arms of his friends who all took him into a protective group hug.
"Looks like you got some fire in ya after all, huh?" Belted Billy joyously. He stalks closer towards Steve, his voice lowering with every word. "I've been waiting to meet this King Steve everybody's been telling me so much about."
Steve reaches out and places his two forefingers on Billy's chest, lightly pushing him away. "Get out."
Billy stills as if contemplating his next move but by the time Steve can even blink, Billy has already made it. His fist swings through the air, nearly hitting the side of his head if he hadn't ducked fast enough. As he comes back up, Steve uses the momentum to swing his own fist into Billy's head and it knocks him into the table.
Dustin and the other begin to jump for joy. "Yes! Kick his ass, Steve!"
Billy rises again, more blood covering his lip and another cackle bubbling up but Steve doesn't wait for it to coms out this time. He throws another punch, and it lands squarely in Billy's jaw and he tumbles further into the kitchen counter. He just laughs more, blood now pouring from his mouth and staining his lips and teeth.
Another punch.
His lower back collides with the rim of the kitchen sink, and everything on the counters nearby begins to shake. His head is rolled back in laughter, and the kids encouraging cries are enough to distract Steve from the fact that Billy's right hand is reaching for a plate.
It breaks over his skull and he stumbles back covering his eyes and clutching his scalp. The kids' cries never stop, but they do turn worried as they scream for him to get up, and various 'looks out's were thrown his way. Billy was already on the move, and his shoulder reared back, his hand balled up into a fist with his eyes locked on his target.
When the blow finally comes, Steve is sent into the shelf and several things fall to the floor, including himself. He manages to catch his footing before completely meeting the ground, and as he struggles for balance he fumbles into the living room. He feels himself being yanked up to his feet, Billy's hands grip his sleeves tightly and he gives him a good jolt. His head rolls around on his shoulders as he is thrown around, still blind sighted with pain.
All he can do at the moment is push his one free arm into Billy's heaving chest, desperate to create as much distance as possible. He's shaken again, and Billy drops his voice into an angry hiss.
"No one," he pants. "tells me what to do."
His head flies back before barreling into Steve's, once again sending him flying across the floor. A triumphant cry is ripped from Billy's bloodied lips, the veins in his forehead and throat resurfacing. He stomps across the room towards Steve, all the while ignoring the many screams and pleas for him to stop and leave him alone.
"You're gonna kill him!"
"Billy, stop!"
"Get up, Steve! Come on, you can do it!"
Billy swings one leg over Steve's nearly unconscious form, trapping him in one spot and continues to throw his punches now completely unhinged. Steve's head is swung from side to side as each of Billy's fists connect with his face. Blood flies with every swing, a terrifying roar erupting deep within Billy's chest, and Steve is already more than halfway under. It is truly a disturbing sight to behold, the kids stand planted to the ground in utter terror, screaming their throats raw, begging for him to stop.
All except for Max. She knows her stepbrother is too far gone, and even if he wasn't, he never was an easy one to talk down. She must take matters into her own hands, and that's exactly what she does.
Her eyes have already found one of the syringes used on Will, and it was still full. Wasting no time she snatches it up and rips off the cap. Shoving the boys aside, Max marches across the living room to an unsuspecting Billy. The syringe flies above her head before descending in one swift motion and entering his neck.
Max backs away, the syringe remains buried deep in his skin. He clamors to his feet, staring at her in shock though already it has begun to take effect. He staggers back as loses balance, and his eyelids grow visibly heavy. His bloodied hand feels as if its filled with lead as it rises all the way up to his neck, and he winces as pulls the needle out.
"The hell is this?" He grumbles, lumbering after her. "You little shit, what did you do?"
He has to fight hard to maintain his vision and his balance. It feels as if gravity has tripled. With her directly in his sights, his anger once again redirected at her, he commands his feet to take him to her. Instead, he blinks and finds himself on his back with an aching spine.
"Shit," Mike breathes.
The anesthesia coursing hard through his veins is enough to subdue him but does not bring him completely under as it did the small Byers boy. But it was enough for everyone at that moment. They watched disturbed as he laid on the floor, his head rolling back and forth as he laughed almost joyously. He was amused.
Max only looks at him, for once in her life without even a sliver of fear. All that's left is loathing, and disgust.
She shakes her head, deciding she is still not done. Max would ensure that this would not happen again.
Max takes the bat into her hands and held it over her shoulder, stalking over till she towered over Billy as he had done to her oh so many times.
"From here on out, you are going to leave me and my friends alone. Do you understand?"
"Screw you," he spits.
With all her might she throws the bat into the floor just between his legs, his head limply raises up to see that it had missed his crotch by only inches. Everyone watches in awe.
She has to pry the bat from the floor, the several metal nails had been buried deep into the wood floor only further proving her strength and point.
"Say you understand!" She roars. "Say it!"
He says nothing, his head still rolls across the floor.
"SAY IT!"
"I understand," he whispers meekly.
Her brows shoot up, and she tilts her head. "What?"
"I understand." He repeats.
His eyes flutter closed, exhaustion sweeping over him. Satisfied, and finally free, Max drops the bat to the ground with a clatter.
Three mouths watch agape at the sight, they only widen further when she steps around his still body. Bending over, she pulls a set of keys that stick out from his pocket and hold them up for all to see with an impatient look.
"Let's get out of here."
||Reader's POV||
The ride here lasted way too long, at least it felt like it did. My hand comes to rest on the shoulder of Jonathan's seat as I try to peer around to look at where we are. The car had already been going fairlybslow these past few minutes, but it had gotten even slower leaving me to believe we had to be here. Sure enough, just past a few trees, I can barely make out a small wooden porch of the cabin illuminated by the headlights.
I look over to my right at Joyce as the car comes to a stop. Nancy and Jonathan exit the car and head for the trunk, their doors rocking the car a bit when they close them. Will, for the most part, is cradled against Joyce, his head lays against her chest. She hasn't taken her eyes off of him since we got in the car, she's just been lovingly stroking his hair and brushing strands away from his face. My eyes fall to him, my mind hasn't been able to think about anything else other than him or what I'm about to try to do.
I feel eyes on me, and I look up to meet eyes with Joyce. Her expression is hard and somber, her lip is trembling but her eyes are far kinder. We share a silent exchange, knowing the road that lies ahead will not be an easy one, and it's almost a weak attempt at consoling each other.
I take a deep breath and open my door.
"Y/n,"
I stop, my hand leaving the handle and I look at her curiously.
"Sweetie, I am so, so proud, a-a-and thankful for what you are willing to do for this family," she smiles halfheartedly. "But this is a lot to ask. Are you sure this is something you're up for? I couldn't possibly ask you to do something so big if it's too much."
I look at my feet, her words bouncing around my head. They are the perfect meal for my anxiety, feeding all my fears and doubts. And yet, nothing inside me changes. I look up at her, my eyes falling to Will as I speak.
"Yes," I murmur, shaking my head a bit. "I don't think I'd be able to live with myself if I didn't at least try."
My eyes well up with tears, and I look to the woman, who so long ago, had become like a second mother to me.
"Will's my best friend, he's one of the best people I know. And I know he would do the same for me," her eyes are fogging up too, I realize. "This family has done so much for me... I want to give something back."
"Oh, honey," she croaks, reaching a hand out and over Will to give my hand a light squeeze. "You are apart of this family."
The dam breaks, and I feel several hot tears slide down my cheeks and dangle from my jaw. I smile crookedly and soon so does she. She gives my hand another light and loving squeeze and we nod and exit the car.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Between the four of us, we managed to get Will and everything we brought up to the house in one trip. I took the stuff Jonathan had grabbed from the trunk so that he could carry Will.
Nancy is the first to enter, and hitting a switch by the front door, a couple of lights flicker on. We file in one by one, and when I enter after Jonathan, I'm surprised at what I see. And smell. I had expected a mothy, and dusty old cabin given the boards over the windows but it was surprisingly tidy and smelled a bit like an unusually pleasant mix of laundry detergent and pine.
It finally hits me this was where El had spent the last year. It's weird to think this is where she has been living all this time. I step out of the way as Joyce comes in after me, and hesitates just as I did to look around. I stand on the other side of the couch as Jonathan lays Will down on the cushions. Thankfully, he hadn't woken up and we can all only hope that he stays that way until we're ready. We were halfway there when we realized we forgot the anesthesia.
I release a deep breath, trying to push out as much of my nerves as I can and my eyes linger across the room soaking up the details. My eyes catch on what lays sprawled out on the coffee table; a large and completed puzzle of a fireworks display. I feel my expression soften, the ends of my lips tugging up as I think about El enjoying her puzzles.
"It's actually," Nancy said as she got a good look around. "kinda nice."
"Hopefully we can keep it that way," I joke dryly.
I watch as Joyce roams around the room inspecting the place, finally she stops in front of the cast iron fireplace and kneels down in front of it. She looks up at all of us and nods.
"We'll do it here."
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Jonathan and Joyce bring Hopper's bed out into the living room in front of the fireplace. All the while, Nancy and I begin setting up the heaters.
I'm glad I have the help, it makes everything a little less intimidating. Only a little. I still know that this is going to take just about everything I've got.
But I meant what I said to Joyce. I am going to do this. I have to. And I want to.
That quick trip to Chicago is starting to turn out to be not such not a bad thing, after all. If I hadn't gone, I never would have broke. I never would have hurt so hard that I found my control. I never would have hit rock bottom. But that's the thing about rock bottom, I guess.
You can only go up from here.
Joyce begins to fill the fireplace to the very top, and Jonathan and Nancy have already turned on the space heaters.
I return from the kitchen with snacks and juice in hand, and I felt absolutely foolish. But halfway through set up, I realized I was going to need all the strength I could get. Which meant I needed fuel. Thankfully, the others not only understood but encouraged it. Even though it all made sense, I still felt silly sitting at the table, eating Hopper's food while everything was going on around me.
But I'm so hungry. I hadn't realized how tired and starving I was until I sat down. It must have been almost a full day since I've eaten! I try to remind myself that this is all what's best for everyone. I can't make much of a difference if I'm not taking care of myself too.
I'm surprised I'm having trouble at all, but my nerves are only growing as time marches on. But before I know it, I've cleared everything in front of me, and just in time, too. The others are now gathering around Will, and they don't seem to be attending to any more details. I rise from my chair and join them.
When I see Will, I can feel coils around my heart tightening, constricting it completely. I suddenly wish Dustin were here just so I could yell at him, cause it really did look like it was right out of the Exorcist.
They had managed to tie his hands and feet down, each limb now connected to each leg of the bed. His arms laid as perfect 'L's beside his head, and he was still an unnatural shade of white.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Jonathan asks, voicing all of our inner doubts.
Without breaking her gaze away, and the hard and stern expression returning to Joyce's face she answers.
"This thing has had Will long enough," she spits, sounding as angry as I felt. "Let's kill this son of a bitch."

Rude Awakening
Pairing: Steve Harrington x Reader, Mentions of the Party
Warning: Violence, altered turn of events, swearing
(1/2) or (1/3)🧐🤔
Tumblr media
You were currently, home studying when the phone rang, you knew it wouldn’t be your parents, since they only ever used your pager to contact you.
“Hello?”
“Hey! Do you want to come over?”
You sighed, while pinching the bridge of your nose.
the voice continued
“Come on Y/N/N! The Parties over, and they’ve been dying to meet you. Now is the perfect time. Besides, will really misses you.”
“Fine, I’ll be over in five.”
Hanging up the phone, you made your way into your car driving over to the byer’s hosuehold. You had barely made it to onto the front porch before the front door was flung open, and someone practically throwing themselves into you.
Chuckling and hugging the person back you greeted, “Hi, Miss Byers!”
“How many times do I have to tell you, Y/N! Call me Joyce!”
She was happy to see you again. It had been awhile since, you were last over at the Byers house. She was seemingly, over joyed to have another female around, since she was always around males.
Joyce, grabbed your hand and lead you into the house. It wasn’t long before another body was flung onto yours. You knew it was Will, because he was around the same height as your upper stomach.
“Hi, Y/N! I’ve missed you! Never go that long without seeing us again, okay?”
You nodded in agreement, hugging him back and kissing the top of his head. He grabbed your hand and lead you over to where a group of kids were sitting in his living room. You had immediately, assumed that these were the kids in the “Party,” everyone had referred to.
“Guys, this is our friend, Y/N!”
 “Y/N, this is Mike, Dustin, Eleve, Max and Lucas.” Max and Eleven, were so happy to have another girl around they ran over to you and gave you a hug.
Awhile passed since you were introduced to the party. Usually, they had gatherings at your house since you lived there alone. Tonight however, was a “Girls Only,” night.
“So who do you have a crush on, Y/N?” Max had started the cringe worthy conversation. Finding out, Eleven liked Mike, and Max liked Lucas.
“Uh, nobody at the moment.”
“Uh huh.”
“What do you mean, uh huh?”
“Oh nothing.”
You had chuckled, getting up and grabbing the empty bowl of popcorn. Eleven, had been looking at you weird all night. Almost like, she knew but that you had helped her escape from that night at the Lab, but couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“I’m going downstairs to get more, do you guys want anything?”
“Yeah! Let’s all go down.”
It was awkward silence, on the venture down to the kitchen.
Suddenly, eleven spoke, sitting on the stool of the breakfast nook.
“It was you, wasn’t it?”
Max turned to face her a little, with a confused expression.
“You helped me escape, didnt you?”
You let out a sigh of defeat, letting your shoulders slump forward.
“Yes, but you can’t tell anyone okay? You too Max.”
“Wait, if you were at the same place as El, does that mean...”
She didn’t finish asking her question, as her faded trying to allow her thoughts to catch up.
You hummed in response.
Suddenly, two high pitched sequels sounded and you were being hugged.
“This is so cool! I have two super hero best friends!” Max exclaimed over joyed!
Accepting the hugs, you kissed the tops of their heads, feeling nothing but love for them.
Once the new mall opened, you and the girls had gone to shop. Seeing as you were the mom of the group, you tried to spoil them.
“Can we go get ice cream?” Max asked. She had a hint of something mischievous in her voice.
“Oka-“ you were suddenly, being pulled by both girls in the direction you could only assume was the ice cream shop.
Once you arrived in an ice cream parlor called ‘Scoops Ahoy’ you were surprised to see an attractive guy, who looked to be about your age.
“Ahoy Ladies,” he said. His name tag said Steve.
Both girls giggled, before ordering their ice creams, and running to a both in the store.
“What can I get you?” Steve asked
“Uh nothing, I’m okay.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I’m not an ice cream for lunch kinda gal,” you replied tilting your head a little.
“Yeah,” he sighed “I get that...”
“Y/N!” A voice yelled excitedly
“Hey, Robbin!” You laughed happily excepting her hug.
“Oh no,” she groaned “not you too!” She said dramaticly.
Furrowing your eyebrows together, you exclaimed, “What!”
“You’re friends with, dingus, here’s children too!” Playful nudging Steve’s shoulder with her own.
Looking to him for answers, and him you.
“You’re friends with the party?” He asked intrigued
“Uh, yeah, I guess, I am-“ you had barely gotten out before, the two girls came bounding up to you.
“Can we go to shopping now?” Max asked. You nodded your head, reaching in the pocket of your shorts to pull out money.
Two voices in unison said, “it’s on the house.”
Giving them a confused look, you nodded in gratitude.
“I guess I’ll see you guys around. Bye robin, nice to meet you Steve!”
“Nice to meet you too ... “
“Y/N,” you called as the two girls hooked their arms in yours and pulled you backwards out of the parlor laughing.
“Y/N.” Steve happily to himself.
Robbin turned to him and said, “What the fuck was that dingus?”
You were currently shopping in the Gap, with Max and El. They were giving you a fashion show, of cute outfits each of you had picked.
The party, decided to hangout at your house this time. Max was currently, on high alert because her brother Billy, didn’t want her to see Lucas anymore, for whatever reason. It wasn’t long before everyone had shown up, including Steve.
The doorbell sounded, opening the door you were surprised to see Steve and Dustin standing at your front door. Stepping aside to let him in. He handed you a bouquet of fresh flowers. The gesture made you blush,
“I’m gonna go put these in a vase. Thank you, Steve.”
You moved to give him a hug. This time, it was your turn to make him blush. He followed you to the kitchen. As you were putting the flowers in a vase you said,
“You know you didn’t have to right?”
He shrugged leaning against the counter before adding, “I know, I just thought a pretty girl, deserved pretty flowers.” He said shyly.
“May, Steve Harrington, are you flirting with me?”
“That depends. Is it working?”
Before you could respond, you heard a chorus of “Shit!” Being yelled by your friends. Suddenly, they all flooded into the kitchen.
“Billy’s here! How did he find me! He’s going to kill me,” Max said nervously, as El was trying to comfort her.
You, Steve and Jonathon all exchanged glances. Rolling your eyes, you said “Don’t worry boys, I got this.”
Making your way, to where you kept your bat for instances like these, you threw open the front door, and waited for Billy to exist the car. You didn’t have to look to know that the party was pressed into the front window watching nervously. Both Steve, and Jonathon had joined you on the porch.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the Queen, of the misfits herself,” his rough voice sounded as he put out his cigarette.
“Bite me,” you snarled
“Oh I dream of it, sweetheart,” Steve was about to move towards Billy, before you looked at him and wrapped a reassuring hand around his arm.
“Aw, look at that. King Steve, being a bitch,” he taunted.
“What do you want Hardgrove?” You asked darkly.
“Aside from you?” He asked, tilting his head, causing both Jonathan and Steve to step in front of you protectively, causing Billy to let out a hardy laugh, “ I came for Maxine.”
“Guys,” you whispered, “I don’t need you to protect me, I got this.” Hesitantly, they both stepped away from you, but not by much. You took a step forward closer to Billy.
“Leave her alone Billy.” You said confidently.
He chuckled in response, he moved closer to you, almost close enough to tower over you.
“Make me, Y/N, oh wait, you can’t, that’s why you have the goon squad protecting you.”
He was close enough that you could smell the alcohol on his breath.
“Are you drunk? Go, home Billy.”
You decided it wasn’t worth it, you moved to go back in the house, when a rough callused hand grabbed your wrist.
“You and Harrington huh? I could rock your world better than he -“ you didn’t give him a chance to finish, before you dropped the Bat, swinging around so your fist could meet the side of his jaw.
“WHAT THE FUCK!” Billy boomed, letting go of your wrist to bring that hand up to his jaw, causing you to flinch.
Suddenly, both boys were beside you protectively.
“You’re dead Y/L/N,” Billy yelled angerly
“No, you are!”
And with that Steve began throwing punches at Billy gaining the upper hand, but not for long. Soon, Billy was on top of Steve, punching him. Deciding, you had nothing to lose, you turned around and lunged at Billy to get him off of Steve.
After, Billy left, you, Jonathan and Steve all went back into the house. Forgetting that the your friends were watching the whole thing unfold.
“Holy Shit you guys!”
“That was badass!”
Greeted you the minute you all walked back in the house. You brought Steve to the bathroom so you could fix his bruises.
“That was stupid, why’d you do that?” You questioned him. You were actually released that he had stepped up and covered you.
“I couldn’t let him hurt a pretty girl like you.”
“Even with a messed up face you’re still trying to flirt with me?” You questioned with raised eyebrows.
“Save it for later old man.”
“Hey! Who’re you calling old? I’m not that much older than you!” You chuckled at his defensiveness.
It was late, so everyone slept over at your place, since they were already there. Steve wasn’t laying far from you on the floor.
You couldn’t sleep, so you crawled over to where Steve was, gently shaking him awake.
“Steve?”
“Steve!”
You whisper yelled to wake him up
“I can’t sleep.”
He didn’t respond before lifting the blankets in front of him, silently inviting you in. Once you got comfortable, you realized how close you were to Steve, a fraction of an inch and you would be kissing his neck.
He was flirting with you all the time.. what harm could having a little fun with him do? You thought. You decided to lean up, that fraction of an inch and latch your lips onto his neck. Sucking and biting you made your way up to his jaw, leaving a trail of love bites on his neck.
“What do you think you’re doing?” He whisper groaned.
You didn’t respond, as you attached your lips onto his, placing chaste kisses. It wasn’t long before you, felt one of his hands, tangle in your hair holding you to him. Steve took control, and moved so your back was on the floor, with his upper half pressed to yours. The sudden movement enciting a gasp from you, allowing him to snake his tongue into your mouth. Closing your lips around his tongue, you began to lightly suck on it. Steve let out a low moan, causing you both to freeze your actions Incase you accidentally woke someone up. He placed kisses along your face, to your ear. Running his tongue, on the out shell of your ear, he took your earlobe and chewed on it. Your hands made their way to his biceps, digging your nails into them, gently bringing yourself up to his biceps you lightly bit them to keep from morning.
“Would you two stop? Some of us want to sleep!” Dustins annoyed voice sounded. This caused Steve to shoot Dustin a glare. Dustin flipped him off in return.
“Goodnight, y/n”

Little Devil
Request: Hey, I have a Steve Harrington X reader request... U know when eleven gets bitten by the ST3 monster and then that weird thing comes out of the bite on her leg, could u possibly do it so it's the reader who gets bitten and Steve is helping them. I hope this isn't too much to ask for 😊 - @nerdy-collector-festival Pairing: Steve Harrington x Reader Warnings: STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 SPOILERS! Profanity, descriptions of blood and gore.  A/n: I reblog all gifs I use under #gif.
Tumblr media
“Y/n? Y/n — hey hey hey hey hey—!” Steve grabs you when you try to walk away. You don’t get far but regardless you keep trying, even when his arms. You’re burning up yet feel so cold, and his warmth does nothing to help you feel good. You can’t even think of his comfort or why he’d be worried, you just try to get out and on your own. But that quickly your energy is all gone and you’re still, limp against him.
“Y/n, what’s…?”
That look he first thought to be scorn on your face for all the things Dustin described the two of them doing…with a deeper look, Steve realizes it’s much more pitiful. You’re in pain.
He looks over his shoulder where your eyes are crossed over, looks at El and Mike in a loose grasp, Jonathan hugging his brother Will tight, even Lucas and Erica bickering admits his reunion with Dustin, but he can’t help but give his little sister a faint hug no matter how hard she pretends to be disgusted by it.
It’s all so sweet. And you huff, forcing a smile. But as your eyes go back over one person to the next, you can feel a terrible throbbing and hear a sickening buzz inside of your head. You gently push away from Steve, just a step or two, breathing quicker than your lungs can keep up with as the world starts spinning and this pain in your leg — in everything — gets worse and worse and—
He just took his eyes off for a second or two. For you, it was much longer than that. A second out of his arms and you collapse onto the floor.
“Y/n?!” He yelps, attempting to lung forward and catch you. He barely saves your head from meeting the hard ground, but his grip begins to slip and he yells “Guys?!” As he lowers you completely and comes to kneel around your head.
He leans forward, dropping both knees to the sides of your head to make it easier for him to get in your face.
“Y/n? Y/n?!” He shouts while shaking you.
And then you begin to stir and he reels back relieved, chuckling madly. Until you begin to groan and that strange uncomfortable smile you had from before makes much more sense as you violently kick your leg forward and grab onto him.
Steve looks on slightly clueless and with his jaw slack as Jonathan thinks to hold your leg still and peel off the bandages that were applied earlier.
Back then it was just a cut.
A collective groan at the entity that’s embedded itself into your flesh.
“What is that?” Erica scoffs while Dustin gags into his fist.
Then Steve knows what’s up. He hugs around your shoulders and neck, pulling your upper half into his lap as though he can somehow drag you away from your own, hostile leg. He keeps his hands on your cheeks as best as he can despite the painful twisting of his wrist, and dips his head to keep his lips against your forehead.
He presses rapid kisses and does you the favor of wiping beads of sweat from your skin as your chest rises taller and taller faster and faster.
Mike is by your side, holding his hands on the floor right by our stomach. “There’s something in there.” He says in a hurried breath and gesture for El to come over, but she’s stuck staring at your leg in disbelief as whatever is in there begins to writhe, the swollen flesh no longer just pulsing.
“Jesus Christ,” Dustin mutters. He looks at Steve and tries getting into a position where he’ll even bother to look at him.
“Uh k-keep her talking.” Jonathan is up off the ground, his only moment of hesitation being when he sees Steve’s complacency. He’s hugging you, comforting you, but getting comfort from you. Before he leaves he kneels by Steve to get in his face. “Keep her awake, okay?” He nods along witH Steve, only able to hope that he’s listening.
And then he’s up and gone, running from the group and gathering any tool and utensil he can at nearest food stand in the court.
When he comes back around he drops to his knees with a damn butcher’s knife in hand and Steve wonders if he’s lost his mind.
“J-Jonathan? Jonathan?!”  Steve holds his hand out to try and stop him but Jonathan looks at you. You squirm in pain but ultimately nod, giving him the go ahead. Then you squeeze your eyes shut in preparation and Steve feels your nails begins to dig into him.
“No no no no no! Jonathan what are you doin—AH!” He hisses as Jonathan pushes the knife into your wound. That’s when you hold your tongue and dig your nails into Steve’s flesh even deeper. “Jonathan STOP you’re hurting her!”
Jonathan holds his hand out to the wound, bloody and full of pus. His voice is raspy and seems to hurt when he raises it so high but Steve can’t deny that the urgency in his words is justified. “I have to! I have to get it out!”
You grit your teeth and nod as best as you can.
Steve reluctantly leans down again and presses a kiss to your forehead. He stays with his lips against your skin and takes one of your hands away from your face so he can hold it down by your stomach where it’s a more natural position for you. Your squeeze alone hurts like a bitch.
“We’re gonna get it out. It’s gonna be okay, okay Y/n?” He coos.
Then Jonathan pushes his fingers in and you start screaming instead of letting out those organized grunts you managed you hide your pain behind previously.
Steve starts to backtrack on his thought process, really unsure if there’s any way to help you.
God, he doesn’t know how to help you.
He watches with tears brimming his eyes before he forces them shut, letting you squeeze his hand tighter and tighter. The way he stretches so you can hold his hand lifts your head up just enough to also watch as Jonathan struggles with the little devil inside your leg.
“Jonathan hurry up!” Looking to Steve Jonathan can see his brows low and thick, his whole face heavy with anger. He sees Steve’s uneven breath as he tries to steady them for you, to make you feel comfortable in his lap despite the circumstances.
And then you choke out “St—OP! ST—“ your voice getting lost halfway. “STOP!” You shout desperately with strain.
But Jonathan keeps going. He understands your pain but he just needs to get the damned thing out of your leg.
Steve leans forward and tries his best to flick at him. “Jonathan! She said stop!”
He does again. But before he can start up for what he considers the grater good, El nudges him.
She looks at you, she looks at Steve, she looks at Jonathan and Mike too. She gets the nod from you and Mike and Jonathan but Steve just stares in disbelief.
Then you’re pouting and whimpering and whining up at him. He sees your lips trembling as the discomfort of the situation still gives you an uncontrollable smile.
Steve nods.
And Eleven focuses herself.
And you scream louder and louder.
It hurts her to go so far, without the doubt the worst pain you’ve ever had the misfortune to feel. And damn if the Russians can’t hear you right now.
Everybody’s screaming with you. Either to cheer you on, cheer Eleven on, or out of disgust when she gets just the tail-end of the create out before it slithers back into the cavity its made. When you get a look at the damn thing you scream even louder out of fear this time knowing it’s something so, so disgusting.
Focusing her brows, the veins on her head popping out, Eleven stretches her fingers as far out as she can muster before ripping the sucker from your leg with a gush of blood coming out where it blocked and attached to your blood flow. The glass of the store behind you completely shatters as she screams, and without a thought, she throws it a good distance, absolutely heated. It lands with a weak plop as it hits the linoleum, and she gets on her knees to hold your feet and coo while you finally get a chance to breathe.
You swear you almost have a heart attack when there’s a loud thump in the direction where she threw it. You all look back…and there’s Hopper having killed the thing under his boot.
You’re mildly relieved.
But there’s still blood. Lots of blood.
Steve was biting on his thumb the whole time in between kissing your temples. He’s relieved too and lets out a shaky laugh. It’s soft and only between you two, so you laugh too from relief that the damn thing is gone.
Jonathan gets back up on his feet and is hesitant to either keep the job going (after all you’re bleeding out) or stop for his mother’s sake.
He stares her in the eyes as she approaches, and holds a hand out. “Bandages,” he says. “We need more bandages.”
Max goes “Oh!” And remembers the little box she smuggled out of the store and stored into her pocket. Jonathan does his best to put pressure on the wound with some of the dish towels he picked up but no way is he letting cloths soaked in the grease and sweat off fry cook’s hands wrap around your leg for God knows how long.
He mutters “Sorry Y/n,” right as he does it but it’s nothing compared to that.
Max fumbles, getting out the tightly rolled bandages from the package. It’s only as thick as her two thumbs and she worries it won’t be enough, but when you grab onto her hand before she stands back up, she feels comfortable with her contribution. You smile at her and squeeze her knuckles before letting her go.
“Uhm, rubbing alcohol? Wherever you got the bandages—did you get rubbing alcohol?”
“Yup!” Lucas slips off his bag and drops it on his knee beside you. Your eyes are not focusing and your whole demeanor is quite loopy, so you giggle when Lucas winks and smiles at you before whipping out the bottle he smuggled. He figured you’ve been at this long enough to have known you would all potentially be needing multiple trips to the supermarket.
Jonathan unrolls the bandage but is stuck. He stutters, “Uh-I uh—“
Then Steve sighs and starts to get up. “Give it. You go find clean towels.” Jonathan nods and tosses it to Steve. He barely catches it but pushes it against his palm to keep it safe. “You,” he nods at Mike, then down at you and while he gets up Mike comes around to where he once sat so he can keep your head cushioned.
Steve kneels down by your feet. When his eyes meet yours his flicker away immediately. But you’re smiling and he can’t help smiling too. He knows you don’t mind it, but he feels like an ass in this instance.
He props up your leg and pulls at the bandage to figure out which way it needs to go. It’s one of the ones with a sticky portion at the end to hold it all together and not the kind that you tuck. Lucas hands him the rubbing alcohol just as Jonathan jogs back with a towel. You can see him sniff it softly to make sure it’s actually clean and not reeking of more grease.
“Thank you,” Steve mumbles. He tries avoiding your eyes again but can’t and says “Sorry about this,” as he pours the rubbing alcohol over the bunched up towel. He holds it over your leg so of course it stings when some of it goes right through. Still, it’s nothing compared to what you’ve just been through.
“Sorry,” he says again as he puts the soaked towel to your injury with purpose.
Now that hurts like a bitch.
And apparently, your hands do too.
“Ow ow ouch ouch,” Mike seethes. Max slaps him on the arm and he yells “Sorry!” Before Hopper comes around. He nudges his leg with his foot and nods his head for Mike to go anywhere else. Hopper kneels and Mike gives him reign over your comfort, your head resting in his lap instead.
He immediately gives his hand and you squeeze as soon as you get it. Steve doesn’t miss a spot. He basically cleans your whole leg before he’s comfortable enough to bandage it up.
“You doin’ okay Y/n?” Steve asks.
You force a smile. “Never better.”
His high school and sports days have suited him for knowing how to tie a good bandage.
He finishes up and despite the sticky assistance at the end of the roll, he also remembers to tuck the end down under the rest of it to keep it extra secure.
Steve and the others get up, with Steve leaning forward and holding both hands to you to help. You grab onto him and Hopper helps even more when he stands. You stumble forward into Steve’s arms and he holds your head against his chest while whispering in your ear.
“We’re never doing this again,” he chuckles.
“Ugh.” He kisses your forehead. “I hope the hell not.”
Things go quiet and it’s like you can hear the ticking of a watch. Maybe it’s a clock somewhere overhead. With the tick, tick, tick making your head ache, you close your eyes and wrap your arms around Steve knowing his presence alone can make it better.
Then Hopper clears his throat and popping an eye open, you realize that tick tick ticking sound is him tapping his foot on the ground.
“Oh yeah…” Steve mutters. “Looks like the gang’s got some explaining to do.”
You roll your eyes and can only assume everybody else does too.
Hopper smiles. “Sure do.”

The In-Between Chapter 8
Stranger Things x It Crossover
with some Bill Denbrough x reader
Word Count - 14,120
Warning - just a lot of emotions😭💗also, I put one of the It Chapter 2 scenes in here for Richie so here’s the warning for that!!
A/N- so this is THE LONGEST chapter I have written for this series but it’s 100% necessary for the series. this chapter is going to show a small but very important memory of Y/N with each of the characters, each one showcasing just a little bit of how much Y/N means to them which will help show you all how much her situation affects them. since there are so many characters and flashbacks that means this chapter is super long so I apologize in advance if you think it’s too long, but I just couldn’t split it up, you know? also, I changed a scene from It Chapter 2 and basically had it happen when Y/N was around to fit the storyline, so just pretend like it happened after they defeated It in the first movie, okay? anyways, I really hope you guys like this chapter! we still have plenty of more until the end! also, all flashbacks will be in italics!
if you would like to be added to the tag list, let me know!

Steve Harrington stared at the little girl in front of him, a small frown etched onto his face as he did so. It was only him and the little girl in the room, both of their parents out in the hallway conversing while Steve got left to watch the young girl and 'bond with her' as his parents had put it.
He didn't know what to think as he stared at the girl who was currently sleeping in the crib wrapped up in a small blanket. He didn't particularly like her at the moment even though she was only a baby, still unable to talk or annoy him like a regular person his age could.
No, she was five years younger than him and had only been born the week before. His parents were just really close parents with hers, so the moment his parents got the call about Y/N L/N being born, they were pulling him towards the car so that they could go visit.
Steve wouldn't admit it, but he was kind of jealous. He just didn't get how Y/N was so special and why his parents were gushing over her when they hardly paid attention to him half of the time.
"What makes you so special?" Steve softly asked as he leaned against the edge of the crib, his fist pushing against his cheek and causing his skin to scrunch up as he stared at her. He brushed his hair back with his hand and scrunched his nose up as Y/N started to move. The baby then let out a small yawn and Steve froze. Okay, so that was kind of cute.
Steve quickly shook his head, his mop of hair moving with him as he did so. He wouldn't allow himself to have those thoughts. He wouldn't let himself break when he was trying everything in his power not to like the girl that had stolen the attention of his parents away from him.
A small coo had him looking back down at the girl and his breath hitched slightly at the sight of big e/c eyes staring up at him. A huge grin appeared on her face as she looked up at him, her arm moving in a jerking motion as she squirmed. "I won't lie. You are kind of adorable," Steve muttered as he looked down at the girl. She let out a small coo and the corners of Steve's lips turned up ever so slightly.
He noticed that her blanket was staring to fall off and reached in to fix it, the small action causing Y/N to reach out and grab onto his thumb with her tiny hand. Steve instantly froze, his eyes flickering over to lock on the baby who was staring at him with wide eyes and a toothless grin. Steve's heart melted in that moment and he gently moved her arm up and down by moving his thumb that she was still latched onto. "I guess you're not that bad," Steve whispered.
As if understanding what he had said, Y/N let out a small laugh that made him smile as a giddy feeling filled the five year old's body. And it was in that moment, with the little girl staring up at him, that he realized the responsibility that he had now bestowed upon himself.
Steve lovingly rubbed the soft skin of Y/N's tiny hand before whispering, "I'm Steve. You don't have a brother right now, but. . .but I can be that for you if you want? I'll love you with all my heart and take care of you. And don't worry, I'll protect you, okay? I'll always protect you."

Lucas let out a small sigh as he looked around his first grade classroom, watching as the kids all went to sit by their friends, making sure to avoid his table entirely. He didn't know what he did that was so wrong, but no one ever seemed to want to talk to him or even sit at the same table as him.
Staring at his empty table, Lucas let out a sigh before reaching for the crayons and beginning to work on his drawing. He didn't even realize someone had walked up to his table before a small voice asked, "Can I sit here?"
Lucas almost fell out of his seat from the sudden noise and looked up with wide eyes to see a young girl standing there. She gave him a small smile and it was only then that he remembered she had asked him a question.
"Uh. . .sure. Yeah," Lucas smiled, happy that someone actually wanted to sit with him. He watched as she sat down, but his eyebrows furrowed in confusion once he saw her pull back the other chair as if someone were going to sit down.
The girl noticed his stare and slapped her forehead. "Silly me. I'm Y/N and this is my friend Frank," she said with a giggle. She then glanced at the empty seat before leaning closer to Lucas and whispering, "He's a bit shy." Lucas snickered and Y/N winked at him before pulling away and grabbing a green crayon. She began coloring and started to tell Lucas her whole life story it seemed like.
Lucas didn't mind. He actually enjoyed the girl's company, finding her quite funny and entertaining with the way she moved her hands around as she spoke. It was only when she was in the middle of telling Lucas a story about the time she broke her arm because Frank told her to try and stick a landing by jumping off a tree that her crayon broke and she fell silent.
"Shit."
The two froze at that and Lucas looked up at the girl who seemed a bit surprised that she had uttered that word. Her eyes locked with Lucas' and the two sat there for a moment before they burst into laughter, huge grins on their faces.
"I like you!" Lucas exclaimed as he pointed his crayon in her direction. He gave her a big grin before tilting his head and asking, "Want to be best friends?" Y/N returned the smile before saying, "Sure! I was getting kind of bored of Frank anyways. He likes to eat too much candy and I don't need that or the cavities in my life." She then picked up a red crayon before glancing over at the empty seat and shrugging her shoulders. “Sorry, Frank."

Dustin skipped out of school with a grin on his face as he headed towards his bike. It was the second week of second grade and Dustin loved it so far. He didn't have many friends except for a boy named Lucas, but he had slowly started becoming friends with two other boys named Mike and Will. He didn't care about not having many friends. He was just happy with life and that was all that mattered.
In that moment, Dustin was most excited about getting home to show his mother the small painting he had made for her today. It was two stick figures, one being him and one being his mother, with a small blob that he had determined was his cat Mews. He was no Picasso, but his mother wouldn't care. The fact that it was coming from him was all that mattered.
Dustin could see his bike by now and his grin widened just a little as he stopped skipping and went to run towards it. However, just when he went to step forward, the force of two hands shoving him in the back had him tumbling to the ground.
His hands scrapped against the ground as he tried to catch himself and he let out a small hiss of pain as he stilled on the ground. "Ouch," Dustin muttered, pulling himself up slightly so that he could turn and see who had just pushed him.
He let out a mental groan at the sight of Troy Walsh and his friend James Dante, the two school bullies in his grade. "Better watch where you're going, Toothless. You don't want to lose more teeth, do ya?" Troy cackled, James snickering from his side.
Dustin tried to get up, but James just shoved the boy down. Dustin let out a defeated sigh and looked up at the boys from under his hat. "I've told you before. I have cleidocranial dysplasia," he muttered, his shoulders slumping slightly as he was being bullied for a condition he couldn't control.
"Those are some big words. You sure you know what they mean?" James laughed. “You sure you do?" Dustin retorted earning glares from the boys before Troy sent a kick to his side. Dustin groaned and held onto his side while the two bullies glared at him.
"A little birdie told me you have a pretty gross trick you can do with your arm. We want you to show us, freak," Troy demanded. Dustin went to shake his head, but James kicked him hard enough to have him falling back again. "Show us!" James exclaimed.
Dustin looked up at the boys shyly before moving his arms in a weird way so that they popped. Troy and James both winced before Troy muttered, "That was disgusting. Do it again." "I don't want to," Dustin told them as he fixed the way his arms looked. Not that it hurt doing it, but the movement could feel uncomfortable at times.
"You really are a freak, aren't you?" Troy laughed before sending another kick at the boy's side. Dustin groaned and hugged his body close to himself as the boys continued to taunt and kick him. All he wanted was to go home, but the fact that he had no friends meant that he had no one who would stand up for him. So all he could do was wait until the boys were done having their fun.
"Hey, assholes!" a voice exclaimed making the kicking stop for a second as all three boys turned to see a girl in a yellow dress with her hair tied back with a yellow bow standing there with a glare on her face.
Dustin recognized her almost immediately. He had seen her hanging around Lucas quite often. The girl was Y/N L/N and her and Lucas had been best friends since the previous year. He had always wanted to try and talk to her, but she was never around Lucas when he was there and the idea of talking to a girl scared him from talking to her when she was around Lucas.
By now the kids that were outside waiting on their parents to pick them up had turned their attention over to the group and the girl who had just openly cussed in front of everyone. Some children were snickering while others were wide eyed, but no one made a move to stop them.
"I'm sorry. Were you talking to us?" Troy asked, turning his attention away from Dustin to look at Y/N in disbelief. "Well you're the only assholes here, so who else would I be talking to?" Y/N questioned. Troy and James both went to say something, but Y/N didn't even give them the time of day as she said, "Leave the boy alone."
"Who? Toothless over here?" James asked as he kicked Dustin for good measure. "No, I don't think we will," Troy told her. "Why? Because your life sucks so badly and you're so insecure that you have to make up for it by bullying others?" Y/N retorted, earning small snickers from the kids while Troy and James glared at her with red faces.
"Insecure? What makes you think we're insecure? If anything, you should be. I mean, with a rat face like yours who wouldn't be?" Troy laughed, James joining in, but Y/N only stared at them blankly, not fazed by them at all. The fact that she didn't react made the boys' laughter die down and a silence fell among the front schoolyard.
"Your words don't bother me, Walsh. Yours either, Dante. Want to know why? Cause why the hell would I listen to the two of you when you can't even take any of the quizzes in class without cheating off of others. And guess what? You still manage to fail! So why would the words of two dumbasses such as yourselves bother me?" Y/N asked, her eyebrows raised as she awaited an answer.
The laughter was getting louder by now and and Troy and James were both red faced. "I don't need to explain why you're insecure because I know you both know exactly what I'm talking about. Or do you want me to tell everyone right now just how much a pussy you two really are?" Y/N asked as she took a few steps closer to the boys.
To Dustin's surprise, they stepped back. "You bitch," James muttered. "No, you are the bitch," Y/N whispered in a dark tone. "So why don't you two stop being bitches and head home. Your mothers will be waiting for you."
Troy and James glared at the girl, but began to walk away. "You're going to pay for this, L/N!" Troy yelled after her. Y/N just rolled her eyes and flicked the boys off before turning away and looking to Dustin who was still on the ground. "You okay?" she asked as she walked over to the boy.
"Y-Yeah, I'm okay," Dustin said as he stared up at the girl in shock. Y/N smiled and held a hand out for the boy to take. He quickly grabbed on and she helped him into his feet before the two smiled at each other. “That was amazing," Dustin told her. "Thank you."
"Don't let them bother you. Troy and James are idiots," Y/N said. She stared at the boy for a moment before saying, "I think I've seen you with Lucas before. Lucas is like my best friend."
"Yeah, we've hung out a couple of times," Dustin told her before he held a hand out. "I'm Dustin by the way. Dustin Henderson." Y/N smiled and took his hand before shaking it. "Y/N," she said, "Y/N L/N." And that was the beginning of their friendship.

"Y/N can do it!" Wheeler exclaimed causing Y/N to blink out of her thoughts she had been having to see Wheeler, Dustin, and Lucas all staring at her. “What?" Y/N asked confused seeing as she hadn't listened to a word the boys were saying. She was too busy thinking about Will who had been missing for a couple of days now. She was really worried about him, so she had found herself drifting off into space more and more often because of how much she missed him.
"You're a girl," Dustin said causing Y/N to blink. "Wow. Nice going, Sherlock. How long did it take for you to figure that out?" Y/N asked sarcastically earning a snort from Lucas who high fived her while Dustin looked unamused.
"What we are getting at is that because you are a girl, you can help get El ready and like do her makeup and stuff," Wheeler explained. Y/N hesitated and let her eyes flicker over to the girl who had literally appeared out of no where.
Eleven was the girl the group had met in the woods the other night. She had been wearing ratty clothes, had all of her hair shaved off, and didn't seem to know many words since all of her responses were only a couple words long. Y/N still didn't entirely know the girl, but Eleven seemed nice enough and Y/N actually liked her. The fact that Eleven seemed to know how to help Will also made her more accepting of her as well.
"Okay, I'm going to pretend like you didn't just assume I know how to use makeup because I'm a girl. But I probably do know more than you three, so you guys figure out an outfit while I go do El's makeup," Y/N sighed. The boys nodded and Y/N was quick to turn and take Eleven's hand before gently pulling her towards Nancy Wheeler's bedroom where she knew she would be able to find makeup of some kind.
It took a few minutes, but the two girls were eventually sitting on Nancy's bed while Y/N did Eleven's makeup. Eleven was a shy girl and didn't like to say much, so Y/N just softly hummed as she worked, pretending not to notice the way Eleven looked at her and smiling softly when Eleven tried humming the song back.
"And done!" Y/N exclaimed once she had finished up, closing the lipstick as she leaned back to look at the girl. Y/N grinned before putting the makeup down and pulling Eleven off the bed, a small laugh escaping her lips as she brought the girl over to the mirror.
Eleven froze at the sight of herself before she hesitantly reached up and poked at her face. She was silent for a minute before whispering, "Pretty?" Y/N smiled and whispered, "You're pretty with or without the makeup, El."
Eleven smiled at that and Y/N returned it as she wrapped an arm around the girl's neck and hugged her, the two looking at their reflections. Eleven was silent again as her eyes flickered between her own reflection and Y/N's. Y/N could tell she wanted to ask something, so she didn't move as she waited for Eleven to speak.
"Friends?" Eleven finally asked, her eyes flickering to look at Y/N's through the mirror as if she were afraid to ask the question in fear of Y/N saying no. Y/N smiled and whispered, "Even better. We're best friends." Eleven smiled, obviously liking the sound of that. She found herself wrapping an arm around Y/N and hugging her just like Y/N was doing before whispering back in confirmation, "Best friends."

Playing D&D with only two people was quite hard and Y/N and Will didn't realize that until one afternoon when everyone else was busy. It didn't seem to bother either of them though since it only made the game that much more fun to figure out and Will really needed that at the moment.
It had been a couple of weeks since he had returned from the Upside Down and things hadn't been the same since before he had disappeared. Wheeler was depressed because of losing Eleven, so he had been kind of off the radar, wanting nothing more than to be alone. As for Lucas and Dustin, they talked to Will like they were walking on egg shells, so Will didn't hang out with them as much at the moment.
But Y/N was different. She knew how hard it was for Will to adjust after an experience like that, especially seeing as he couldn't even sleep without waking up screaming due to nightmares. Y/N knew Will would talk to her eventually, so she just decided to treat him like normal, joking and laughing around with him like the events that had taken place never happened. It helped both of them seeing as Y/N was also affected by the loss of Eleven.
Y/N treated Will like a normal human being and it was so comforting that he had been spending most of his days by her side, the two hanging out outside of school whenever the others couldn't and just enjoying being kids.
That's how they ended up where they were right now— in Will's living room playing D&D while Jonathan listened to music in his room. Lucas had had a doctor's appointment that day, Dustin had been grounded for accidentally setting his cat's tail on fire, and Wheeler had gone home, so Y/N had brought it upon herself to entertain Will by playing D&D.
Y/N was dressed up as a magician while Will was dressed up as a wizard and the two would break character every so often to chuckle at their outfits. Besides Will, Y/N was probably the second most enthusiastic about the game and she often took over the role of narrator when Wheeler didn't want to.
This was probably one of Will's favorite days with Y/N and he didn't know why. They were just playing a game, but maybe that's exactly why it was. There was no special treatment, no walking on egg shells. It was just the two of them, two best friends being the kids that they were.
Will watched Y/N silently, his mind racing as he tried to figure out how he had gained such a great friend like Y/N. As if sensing his stare, the girl glanced over at him, her hat tilting slightly as she did. She quickly fixed her hat and gave her friend an amused look as she raised her eyebrows. "What?" she asked, the corners of her lips turning up into a smile.
"I just. . ." Will hesitated and Y/N furrowed her eyebrows. Will smiled softly before whispering, "Thank you, Y/N." He didn't have to explain what he was thanking her for. It was for her treating him normally, for playing D&D with him, for just being his friend.
Y/N was silent for a minute as she just stared at her friend, her heart warming slightly as she realized just how much she had missed him while he was gone. She smiled, "No problem, Will the Wise. Now choose your action!"
Will let out a loud laugh and neither of the kids noticed Jonathan who was watching from the doorway, happy to see his brother finally acting like himself for once. Will glanced at his friend and gave her a sly look as he picked up the dice. "Fireball."

"Where is it? Where is it? Where is it?" Y/N muttered in frustration as she flipped through the pile of records she had in the box in front of her. Letting out a groan once she had hit the back of the box, Y/N turned her body to look at Wheeler who was standing on the other end of the store.
"Wheeler, tell me some good news please!" Y/N called out, but the frown on Wheeler's face was enough of a response. "Shit," the twelve year old muttered as she hurried over to one of the boxes she had checked when they first arrived at the record shop. It was the morning before the Party's monthly karaoke night at Y/N's house and Y/N needed to get the latest Bruce Springsteen record to be able to use. Her and Wheeler always sang a song together and they were determined to sing Born in the U.S.A. However, they couldn't do that until they found the record first.
"We've checked everywhere, L/N. I don't think they have it," Wheeler said as he came to a stop beside the girl. "But how? It's still such a new album!" Y/N complained. "Exactly. They probably sold out," Wheeler told her.
"May I help you two?" a small voice asked causing the two to turn and see a young woman who looked to be in her mid-twenties standing at the end of the aisle. "Oh, yes!" Y/N exclaimed as she hurried over to the woman. "We're looking for the new Bruce Springsteen record but can't seem to find it."
"Oh, you two are fans of Bruce? I think we sold our last record earlier this morning," the woman told them causing Wheeler and Y/N to frown. "But I think we might have a few stragglers in the back if you two want to come and check." The twelve year olds' eyes lit up and Y/N gripped onto Wheeler's arm as the two jumped up and down in excitement. "Yes, please!" they both exclaimed.
The woman chuckled before gesturing to follow her. She brought them to the back where there were a few boxes of records laying in storage. "You two are free to look through the boxes if you would like. I'll be out front once you two are done," the woman told them before she began to walk away. "Thank you!" the two kids yelled after her before they looked to the boxes. They glanced at each other before practically breaking into a run.
The two were looking through the boxes within seconds and it took a few minutes before Wheeler cried out triumphantly, "I found it!" Y/N's eyes lit up and she turned to see Wheeler holding the record up in the air. She squealed before running over to the boy and hugging him in excitement. "We hit the jackpot! Hurry! Let's go buy this so we can try it out!" Y/N said.
Wheeler nodded and the two went up to the front to pay for the record. It took about twenty minutes for them to buy the record and bike all the way to Y/N's house, but it was totally worth it once they heard the familiar beat of Born in the U.S.A filling the air.
"Born down in a dead man's town. The first kick I took was when I hit the ground," Y/N sang as she pointed to Wheeler, one hand up as if she were holding a microphone. Wheeler mimicked her actions and squeezed his eyes shut as he sang along to the music with as much passion as he could, "End up like a dog that's been beat too much. 'Til you spend half your life just covering up."
The two kids grinned before singing out, "Born in the U.S.A. I was born in the U.S.A!" The two kids danced crazily around the room with their eyes shut, neither of them realizing how close they had gotten before they tripped over each other's feet and went tumbling to the ground. Y/N and Wheeler opened their eyes and the moment their eyes locked, they burst into a round of childish laughter.
This is what it was like whenever the two were together. Their friendship could be a bit odd at times, but it was about as strong as her friendship with Lucas. They were best friends and partners in crime. But even more importantly, they were karaoke partners and that night when they sang along to their favorite song would just be another win on their long list of karaoke accomplishments.
So with their laughter filling the air and five more hours until the others were supposed to come over for karaoke night, the two kids got up and spun around the room, singing their favorite song and enjoying the moment they had together.
"I was born in the U.S.A. Born in the U.S.A."

"You sure this is going to work?" Max whispered as she stared at the place in front of her. Y/N glanced over at her friend and chuckled before nudging her. "Of course it will," she told her. "Besides, you're with me. They love me."
Max rolled her eyes at her friend's ego and Y/N chuckled before linking her arm with her friend, the two walking into Scoops Ahoy side by side. "Harrington!" Y/N cried out before said boy came running out of the back room.
His eyes searched frantically before he saw Y/N standing there with Max by her side at the counter. "You little shit," he breathed out. "You can't just come running in here yelling for me like that. I thought something was wrong."
"But something is wrong," Y/N told him, the boy raising an eyebrow in amusement as a response. "I'm hungry." Steve rolled his eyes, but let out a small chuckle. "You've got a problematic life I see," he joked making Max chuckle while Y/N reached across the counter to lightly punch the boy's arm. "What would you two like?"
"Can we try one of everything and then decide what we want?" Y/N asked as she put an innocent smile on her face. Steve looked at her unamused. "I know what you're trying to do-" he began, but Y/N leaned on the counter and gave him her best pleading face as she batted her eyelashes. "Please, Stevie. Please," she said.
Steve was silent for a minute before a voice behind him said, "You're screwed." The group turned to see Robin standing with a whiteboard that had Y/N's name written on one side and Steve's on the other. "I know you, Harrington, and Y/N just pulled the puppy dog eyes on you. She's going to win this round once again," Robin said as she went ahead and drew another tally mark under Y/N's name, adding it to the collection of tally marks already there.
"No one asked you. Put that thing away!" Steve exclaimed in annoyance. Robin chuckled and held her hands up in surrender before pushing the board aside. Steve rolled his eyes before turning back to Y/N and Max who were both now giving him their best puppy eyes. He let out a sigh. "Fine. I'll get you two your samples. Now go ahead and sit down," he told them.
Y/N grinned before leaning across the counter to kiss Steve's cheek. "Thanks, Steve. Love you!" she exclaimed as she turned and dragged Max away to go find a seat. "Love you too, squirt," Steve chuckled before going to get the samples for the girls.
"Holy shit. I can't believe that worked," Max muttered as the two slid into a booth. "It's Steve. He's a sucker when it comes to me," Y/N laughed. "I love him so much."
"I wish Billy was like that. Steve isn't even your real brother," Max pouted. "He might as well be," Y/N muttered. "I'm sorry about, Billy. I think he's just going through some things right now. But in the end, he's always going to love you." Max smiled softly at that and gave Y/N a thankful nod.
"I wish Eleven was here," Y/N said, trying to change the subject. "The three of us hanging out together? Think of all the mischief we could get into!" Max chuckled, "Yeah, but's she's too busy sucking faces with Mike." The two grimaced at the thought before letting out loud laughs.
"You know, I'm glad you moved here," Y/N suddenly said, the comment making Max freeze before she looked to her friend with a smile. "I don't know. I mean, I love the boys and everything, but it's nice having some friends that are girls as well." Max smiled softly, thankful that Y/N had said that especially since she had been doubting herself in the friend group recently. "Thanks, Y/N. It's a pleasure to be able to save you from the boys," Max jokingly said.
The two girls chuckled and were in the middle of laughing when Steve set their samples down before them. Their eyes instantly lit up and Steve pointed a finger at them. "Just this time, okay?" he said. "Yes, sir!" the two girls said before they mock saluted him, thus causing another round of laughter. Steve rolled his eyes with a smile on his face before he ruffled Y/N's hair and went back to working.
Max and Y/N both glanced at each other before looking to the samples before them. There were so many that they knew they wouldn't be hungry when they were done. Y/N smirked before looking up at the red head.
"First once to get a brain freeze loses."
"Oh you're so on."

"Dammit," Mike Hanlon muttered as he stared at the bags that had fallen from his bike and onto the sidewalk. Luckily nothing had spilled, but he was going to be late to meet up with his friends if he didn't get all of his shit together.
With a frown on his face, Mike set his bike up against a building before bending down to pick up the packages he had to deliver later. His grandfather had been in a good mood and allowed him to meet up with his friends before delivering the packages, so Mike could not mess this up.
Today was the day he was supposed to be meeting the girl who had become close to the Losers. From what the others had told him, she had just moved from Indiana and seemed to be pretty amazing. He hadn't had the chance to meet her yet because he was homeschooled and work had kept him busy, but he was finally getting to meet the girl today and Mike was honestly quite nervous. He wondered what she would be like especially since each of the Losers has described her in different ways.
Stan had called her a great listener while Eddie called her a kind and understanding person. Beverly had described her as the coolest chick one would ever meet and Ben had talked about how she had great taste in music. Then there was Richie who, in true Richie fashion, had called her a babe much to Bill's annoyance. And finally Bill, who was obviously crushing on the girl, had just gushed about how great of a person she was before realizing he was getting carried away and becoming embarrassed. Mike knew he was going to like the girl just from the way his friends described her, but whether she liked him or not was the nerve racking part.
Lost in his thoughts, Mike didn't even seem to realize someone was helping him pick up the packages until his head smacked into theirs. Both of them let out a groan before Mike looked up to see a girl staring at him. She gave him a small sheepish smile before saying, "Sorry, are you okay?" "No need to apologize. It was my fault," Mike quickly rushed out as he stood up, the girl following suit. The two stood there awkwardly for a moment and Mike blinked before turning and trying to put the packages back into the basket on his bike.
Noticing the struggle, the young girl who looked to be around his age chuckled and said, "Here. Let me help." Before Mike could say anything, she had reached out and taken the packages from Mike. In a matter of seconds she had the packages in the basket and was tying them in place with some string that he had tried to use, but failed to use properly.
Once she was done, the packages were so secure Mike knew they wouldn't fall. He looked to the girl surprised and she smiled before saying, "I was the newspaper girl back in my old town, so I kind of learned how to tie the huge pile of newspapers onto my bike pretty well." "Well, thanks," Mike told her, smiling softly as he did. "It's no problem really," she said. "I'm sorry, but I've got to go. I'm supposed to be meeting someone in a couple of minutes."
"Funnily enough, me too. Hopefully I see you around?" Mike suggested. The girl smiled and gave him a short nod before hopping onto her bike and pedaling away. It wasn't until she was gone that Mike realized he never got her name. Mike shrugged it off and checked his watch before muttering, "Shit." He was going to be late at this rate.
Mike quickly hoped into his home before pedaling across town and towards the quarry. Thankfully he made it with a minute to spare. However, the Losers were already there so he knew Richie was going to give him crap for not being there early.
The boy put his bike stand up before getting off his bike and running over to the cliff where the Losers were all standing there talking to someone that he couldn't quite see. It was when the others noticed him and stepped out of the way that Mike's eyes widened in disbelief.
He watched as the girl who had helped him earlier walked out, a small chuckle escaping her lips as she tilted her head at him. "Hello again. I'm guessing you're Mike, right?" she asked, the boy nodding in response. "Nice to meet you, Mike. I'm Y/N."

Richie and Y/N hadn't always been as close as they were. In fact, Richie had been a little skeptical about the girl at first, although it didn't quite show since he never allowed his true feelings to be on display for everyone to see.
So when he had invited the Losers to come to the arcade with him and Y/N had been the only one free, Richie had honestly debated on just not showing up. However, Richie wasn't that type of person and knew he would feel guilty about it for the next six months if he didn't show, so Richie made a point to go to the arcade and had even gotten there early to make sure he wasn't late when Y/N showed up.
While he waited, Richie found himself playing Streetfighter with a boy who he didn't know the name of. He didn't know how long they were playing, but both boys were laughing and kept sneaking glances at each other as they played. Richie had only felt this way around one other person, but he was still coming to terms with it, so he pushed it aside.
It was only when the game was over and the boy went to walk away that Richie realized he didn't want to boy to leave and began to panic. "Um. . ." Richie quickly grabbed a quarter and held it up for the boy to see. "How about we play again? Play some more, you know?"
The boy was silent for a minute before he glanced over his shoulder at the sound of some kid whimpering. He caught sight of Henry Bowers before turning back to Richie who, not wanting to make the boy uncomfortable, quickly added, "Only if you want to."
"Dude, why are you being weird?" the boy said making Richie furrow his eyebrows confused. "I'm not your fucking boyfriend." Richie's eyes widened. "Woah, I-I didn't-" Richie began to say, but he was cut off by Bowers appearing behind the boy with the rest of his gang.
At that moment, Y/N came rushing into the arcade looking a little frazzled. She checked her watch and muttered, "Shit." She was a couple of minutes late and she really hoped Richie was still here. She bolted into the arcade, but paused once she saw that everyone was standing still as they watched Bowers yell at Richie.
"You trying to bone my little cousin?" Bowers asked, Richie's face growing red as he stood there frozen in place not knowing what to think or what was happening. "Get the fuck out of here, faggot! Fucking move!"
Before Y/N could so much as react, Richie was running out of the arcade, the tears obviously blurring his vision as he stumbled outside. Y/N stared after her friend before hearing laughter in the air. She turned and her eyes instantly locked on Bowers who was laughing like he had just done the funniest thing in the world. She didn't know what she was doing, but she was blinded by rage and before she knew it Bowers was on the floor and she was on top of him, her fists punching him repeatedly as she screamed at him and cussed him out for what he had done to Richie.
As she did a double fist dance on Bowers' face, Richie sat outside on a bench in the park across the street from the arcade, his face in his hands as he cried. He didn't even care if anyone saw him at the moment, the idea of holding back his emotions only making him cry harder.
"Fucking Bowers!" Richie yelled out as he brought his hands up to his hair and pulled. "Fuck!" He was sobbing at this point, everything hurting so much that he didn't notice anything that was happening around him. He didn't even notice Y/N standing before him before she whispered, "Richie?"
Richie hesitated at that before he quickly wiped his tears away and looked up at the girl, her eyes already looking at him with so much concern that it made his heart ache. No one had ever looked that worried over him. He didn't know what it felt like to have someone care about him that much to be worried for him the way she was. Although hiding his emotions made it hard for anyone to ever worry about him. Anyone except for Eddie.
"Richie, are you okay?" Y/N whispered, her eyes pleading with him to tell her what was going on. She had called him Richie, not Tozier, Richie realized. For some reason, that alone was enough to make him break down a little more and he looked back down. "Of course I'm okay," Richie tried to reply in his usual upbeat tone, but him having to wipe away his own tears took away the effect.
Y/N was silent for a moment before she sat down next to the boy. Richie stared at the ground, not wanting to look her in the eyes. Y/N remained silent a little longer before she placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered again, "Richie, are you okay?" Richie broke at that, the sobs returning while Y/N quickly wrapped her arms around him causing the boy to turn and hug her back just as tight. She let him stay like that as long as he needed before the boy eventually pulled away, his eyes landing on her hands which were caked with blood.
"Well shit, what happened to you?" Richie asked with a small laugh as he wiped away his tears. “I beat the shit out of Bowers, that's what happened," Y/N explained, finally allowing Richie to connect the dots and realize that she had seen everything that had happened in the arcade.
For some reason, he found himself chuckling at that and turning his head so that he could look at her. He stared at her for a moment before suddenly blurting out, "I'm gay." Y/N glanced at the boy and Richie blushed before looking away and whispering, "Fuck. That wasn't how I wanted to say that. Fuck, Richie, you fucking loser. Holy shit, I can't believe I just- Fuck!"
Richie let out a sigh before looking at his hands. "I know you saw what happened in the arcade with Bowers, but I didn't even do anything. I didn't even know that was his cousin for starters. We were just playing Streetfighter and I asked if he wanted to play again and he started making fun of me before Bowers appeared and then you know the rest," Richie went on.
Richie was red faced by now. He had never opened up to someone like this before especially not to Eddie who he knew would never know about any of this. So telling Y/N was a big deal for him and he suddenly felt weird about having told her, the fear of rejection looming over him as he sat there. He was embarrassed.
Y/N was silent for longer than Richie would've liked, but she eventually reached out and took his hand before giving it a small squeeze and whispering, "Rich?" The boy was hesitant but let his eyes flicker over to her, the small smile she gave him making him relax a little bit. "It's okay if you're gay or straight or bi. Who you like isn't what defines you. You're still the same person. And I'm going to love you no matter what because you're still Richie 'Trashmouth' Tozier," Y/N assured him.
Richie was silent for a moment as he stared at the girl in disbelief. His eyes began to well with tears and it took him a moment longer to reach out and hug the girl, the weight from finally telling someone and being accepted for who he really was being lifted off his shoulders. Y/N hugged the boy back and, once again, allowed him to hug her for as long as he needed. It was only when he pulled away that she stood up and held a hand out to him.
"Come on. I brought a bag full of quarters and I intend on using them," she told him, a small smile on her face as she stared at the boy. "What about Bowers?" Richie asked, trying not to seem like he was afraid of coming face to face with the boy once again.
"We can handle him," Y/N assured him. "Besides, he's got a shit punch anyways." Richie let out a small snort at that before reaching out and taking the girl's hand. She smiled and pulled him up onto his feet before they began to walk away from the bench.
And with that, the two went back to the arcade hand in hand, both of them happy that they now had a new best friend by their side.

Birds were Stan's favorite animals. They always had been since he was five years old and he was gifted a book on birds for his birthday. Since that day he had used that very book every Saturday, the day he would sit outside or camp out in the woods to just look at the birds and see which ones he could find.
Stan tended to go bird-watching by himself, the other Losers not particularly liking the activity. Each of them had come with him once before, but it didn't take much for Stan to notice how bored they were before he would sigh and let them leave. They always felt somewhat guilty for it—minus Richie who made some crude joke before leaving— but Stan always assured them it was okay and they would go, leaving Stan behind to bird-watch by himself once again.
But things changed one Saturday morning when Y/N decided she wanted to see what Stan spent his time doing when the others weren't around. Stan was afraid to show her seeing as she was one of his newest friends and he didn't want to scare her away.
He quite liked Y/N actually and the two had become almost as close as he was with all the other Losers. Y/N tried to divide her time up equally with everyone, but it wasn't much of a surprise that she spent just a little more time with Bill than the others. So when Y/N had asked Stan to let her tag along, the boy had been both surprised and nervous. For some reason, he really didn't want Y/N to be bored and make fun of him like the others.
To his surprise, Y/N did the exact opposite. They had been bird-watching for an hour now and Y/N hadn't lost the small sparkle in her eyes or the smile on her face as she desperately searched for the birds among the trees. Every so often she would nudge the boy and ask him what bird the one she was pointing at was and he would whisper facts to her while they stared at the bird ahead. It was the first time someone was genuinely interested and the fact warmed Stan's heart.
"Stanley," Y/N whispered before she nudged him gently, instantly knocking him out of his thoughts. "Stanley. Stanley. Stanley. Stan. Stan the Man." Stan chuckled softly before whispering back, "Yes?" Y/N glanced at the boy before pointing towards a small bird that was blue with a light yellow belly and a black stripe across its head that led away from the beak. "What's that one?" she asked softly in an attempt to not scare the bird away.
Stan turned his attention to the bird and narrowed his eyes slightly before whispering, "That bird is called a nuthatch. You know they can walk up and down a tree? They are really smart too. Some of them even use a piece of bark to help pry open other pieces of bark so that they can look for insects." "Woah," Y/N breathed out. "That's so cool."
Stan chuckled and whispered out a few more facts about the bird while they watched it walk up the tree. Eventually the bird flew away and Y/N made that same face where her lips opened up as a huge grin broke out on her face, her sparkling eyes following the bird until it had disappeared before she leaned back with a small content sigh escaping her lips.
Y/N had never realized how calming and intriguing bird-watching could be. Her life was always moving fast, so getting the chance to sit down and enjoy the world instead of running from its horrors was something she couldn't thank Stan enough for.
"Stanley?" Y/N whispered, the name falling from her lips with ease. Stan had told her plenty of times that she could call him Stan, but she still called him by his first name most of the time. He wouldn't admit it, but he secretly liked the fact that she did. "Yeah?" Stan asked, his eyes flickering over to look at her before he looked back out at the different birds that were flying around.
"Thanks for bringing me along."
Stan kind of froze at that before turning his head so that he could get a good look at her. Y/N was staring at the birds with a warm smile on her face, the sunrise hitting her face so that it glowed. Not that he would ever think of her in that way, but for a second he could see why Bill liked her so much.
"Thanks for coming with me," Stan told her, the girl sending a small smile in his direction before reaching out and squeezing his hand gently. And with that, the two turned their attention back to the birds.
Their friendship became ten times stronger that day and from then on they spent every Saturday morning in Stan's backyard watching the birds and taking a break from life.

The soft rustling of pages as he and Y/N flipped the pages of their books was all Ben could hear that Friday evening. They were in the library doing research on Hawkins since Ben found all of the events Y/N had described to be almost as interesting as Derry.
It had all started when she first told them about her life in Hawkins during the first day of school. She hadn't opened up about some of the more serious stuff until the group had become close and Ben hadn't been able to stop himself from raising his eyebrows and muttering, "Hawkins, Indiana? Well I guess I know the next place I'm going to research."
That's how the two had ended up in the library a week later, no one in the group except for the two of them wanting to go research the place. They had spent probably the last two hours in the place just flipping through different books, but nothing had popped out.
Y/N was currently reading a Russian book which Ben had questioned about, but she hadn't given him an explanation, only smiling and opening the book before beginning to read. Ben on the other hand was reading a book about Hawkins itself and hadn't found anything out of the ordinary which made the town that much more of a mystery.
Ben was just about to flip the page again when a soft humming suddenly filled his ears, the tune making him freeze as he recognized it almost instantly. His eyes flickered up to Y/N who had started to move her lips as she quietly whispered to a Kids on the Block song, one that Ben was very familiar with.
"First time was a great time. Second time was a blast. Third time I fell in love. Now I hope it lasts," Y/N whispered, not one hundred percent realizing what she was doing. Ben was quick to whisper the next lines which made the girl look up at him in shock, "I can see it in your walk. Tell 'em when you talk. See it in everything you do. Even in your thoughts.” The two grinned before whispering together, "You got the right stuff, baby. Love the way you turn me on. You got the right stuff, baby. You're the reason why I sing this song."
They didn't realize their voices were raising, each of them getting more excited about the fact that someone they knew was a huge Kids on the Block fan like them. For Y/N, the only other person she could sing with had been Wheeler, but for Ben, he had never had anyone.
"All that I needed was you. Oh girl, you're so right. And all that I wanted was you," they sang. "You made all-" Y/N said before she pointed to the boy with a grin. "My dreams come true," Ben finished. "The right stuff." "The right stuff," Y/N nodded with a small laugh. The two went to sing the next part of the song when they were suddenly hushed by the librarian. Y/N and Ben froze before turning to see that everyone in the library was looking at them and that the librarian was even glaring at them.
The two went red faced and gave the group apologetic smiles before looking back down at their books. They waited a second before glancing up at each other and chuckling softly. "The right stuff," Ben whispered making Y/N grin so big that Ben couldn't help but smile back. She nodded before reaching out and fist bumping the boy. “The right stuff."

"What are we doing here?" Beverly asked confused as she glanced over at Y/N who was smiling and practically bouncing up and down on her feet. Beverly looked at the clothing store in front of her before looking to Y/N again and raising an eyebrow.
"Back in Hawkins, two of my closest friends were Eleven and Max. We would have these girl days where we would hang out at the mall and try on clothes and just have fun. I know you haven't been in the best mood this week," Y/N began. Beverly went to deny it, but Y/N just smiled and said, "And don't deny it because Ben already told me. Anyways, I wanted to cheer you up by having a girls day and since Derry doesn't have a mall, this is the next best option."
Beverly was silent for a minute as she tried to process what Y/N was saying. Finally she let you a small sigh and gave the girl a weak smile. "Okay, but only for an hour or two," Beverly said making Y/N squeal in excitement before grabbing her arm and pulling the red head into the store. “Trust me, Bev. By the time an hour is up you're never going to want to leave," Y/N said.
"Okay," Beverly said, obviously not believing her. However, Beverly realized just how wrong she was once the two were reaching the end of their second hour of shopping. They weren't even buying anything, only trying on clothes and looking at themselves in the mirror. But somehow Y/N had made it fun.
Y/N had them both try on ridiculous outfits and they would spend forever looking the mirror at themselves as they laughed to the point where workers had to come up and ask if they were okay. Y/N had even brought a Polaroid so that they could take pictures to remember all the fun they were having and she made Beverly pretend as if she were walking down a runway while Y/N took pictures of her, the two girls bursting into giggling fits every couple of minutes.
By the time the two hours was up, Beverly never wanted to leave and the fact only made her mood dampen. Y/N noticed the sudden change in demeanor and frowned as she watched Beverly reluctantly putting the clothes away.
"Hey," Y/N whispered as she came to Beverly's side and placed a hand on the red head's shoulder. "Are you okay? What's wrong?" Beverly was silent for a minute before giving the girl a small smile. "Nothing," she assured her despite them both knowing she was lying.
"No, Bev. Come on. You don't need to lie. You can tell me anything. I promise I won't judge," Y/N said. "Was it all the pictures? I'm sorry. I should've asked before I-" “No, it wasn't the pictures," Beverly assured her. "I'm glad we have the memories."
Y/N smiled and Beverly returned it before looking down at her hands sadly. "I'm just a little sad it had to end is all," Beverly explained. "I never really had friends up until I met the boys, so I've never had a girl friend to hang out with. I guess I just didn't realize what I was missing and I'm afraid for it to end. I'm sorry. It probably sounds stupid."
"No, Beverly. It's not stupid," Y/N said. "I know how you feel. Until I met Eleven and Max, my four best friends were all guys. I hadn't even realized what having another girl around would be like and I was so afraid of losing Eleven and Max because I enjoyed getting away from the boys and spending time with them. I promise you this won't be the last girl day, okay? I can only handle Richie's trashmouth for so long."
Beverly chuckled softly before looking at her friend and smiling at her. "Thanks, Y/N," she whispered. Y/N smiled back and pulled Beverly in for a hug, the gesture making Beverly freeze for a moment before she fell into Y/N's embrace and hugged her back.
"Thanks for hanging out with me today," Y/N told her. "But the fun doesn't have to end here." Beverly pulled away to look at the girl and Y/N smirked. "Ice cream?" Beverly chuckled and shook her head at her friend before saying, "I thought you'd never ask."

All Eddie could hear was his own erratic breathing as he desperately tried to reach for his inhaler which was in his fanny pack. The only problem was that his fanny pack had been torn off of him by Henry Bowers and was lying on the concrete a few feet away and Bowers wouldn't let him near it long enough for him to grab his inhaler. His chest was on fire, his throat closing off more and more every second as it felt like someone was literally sitting on his lungs. He was growing more and more panicked, so his breathing continued to get worse and worse as tears filled his eyes.
This seemed to make Henry laugh harder and that made him start shoving and kicking Eddie harder than before. Eddie mentally cursed himself for having been walking alone. He had stayed after school to have a talk with his teacher and told the others to go ahead on to the quarry where he said he would meet them. Richie had been a little reluctant to go, but had left with the other Losers, leaving Eddie by himself. Eddie thought he would've been safe from Bowers, but it seemed as if Bowers had been waiting for him because the moment he stepped out of school, Bowers was there waiting.
Another kick to the side made Eddie's wheeze grow louder. He was biting his lip as he attempted not to cry, but his asthma was bothering him to the point where he could barely function and he knew if he didn't get to his inhaler soon he would end up having a full blown asthma attack.
As if sensing his prayers, the kicking and punching stopped, allowing Eddie to crawl over to his fanny pack and grab his inhaler. He quickly took a hit before holding his breath, allowing the medicine to fill his lungs and bring him some relief. He repeated the step once more, the medicine instantly making him feel better and allowing the beating of own heart in his ears to disappear.
Eddie put the inhaler in his fanny pack before putting it back around his waist and turning to see what had happened to Bowers. To his surprise, Y/N was standing there with a bloody fist while Bowers laid on the ground holding his face. He didn't even have time to think about why Y/N was still at school before Bowers was yelling out in anger.
"You bitch! I'm going to beat the shit out of you!" Bowers yelled as he pushed himself up and went to lunge for her, but Y/N was so mad that she merely swung back before sending her fist right into Bowers nose. A loud cracking nose filled the air and Eddie winced as he looked at Bowers who had fallen onto the ground with his nose turned at a weird angle. Eddie then quickly looked to Y/N and he paled at the sight of wrist bent in the wrong direction.
"Shit," he heard her whisper before she turned and looked to the boy. Her eyes widened at the sight of Eddie and she quickly ran over to him. "Eddie, are you okay?" "I'm. . .I'm fine. Your wrist though," Eddie muttered, his face paling more as he saw the injury up close. A groan had them both looking to see Bowers starting to get up off the ground.
Y/N was quick to think and grabbed Eddie's hand with her good one before pulling him up off his feet and dragging him away from the school as the two bolted away. They didn't stop running until they knew Bowers was far behind them and even then, Eddie had to be the one to stop the girl, his eyes still trained on her wrist.
They were both breathing heavily as Eddie gently reached out and went to move Y/N's wrist. She instantly winced and Eddie began to breath frantically as he started to panic. “It's broken. Shit, it has to be broken. We have to get help. We have to get you to the hospital. Do you know where the closest hospital is? Actually I think it's a few streets down. We should probably go before your wrist gets any worse. Shit, this is my fault! Why would you do that, Y/N?" Eddie rambled.
"Eds," she said causing the boy to quiet down and look at her. She was the only one that was ever allowed to call him that, so Eddie wasn't even fazed by the nickname. "First of all, I'm going to be fine, so calm down. Second of all, it was one hundred percent worth it. Bowers was being an asshole and I wasn't about to let him continue to treat you like that. Are you okay?" Before Eddie could think properly, the girl had reached up and brushed the hair out of his eyes, a gesture that made him blush because he had seen mothers do that to their own kids but he had never been on the receiving end of that kind of touch.
"I'm. . .I'm fine. My inhaler helped," Eddie explained. "But we shouldn't be worrying about me. You're the one with a broken hand." Y/N just shrugged before letting out a small chuckle and saying in excitement, "But, Eds, did you see his nose? That thing's got to be broken as well!" Eddie looked at the girl in disbelief, silently wondering how she was able to remain so calm when her hand was literally broken. Then again, Y/N L/N always had been one to surprise him.
Smiling lovingly at the girl who was not only his best friend but like a sister as well, the boy gently took her good hand before tugging her forward. "Come on, my knight in shining armor. Let's get you to the hospital and get that wrist checked out," Eddie said, feeling a little more calm now thanks to Y/N who he knew had purposefully been cracking jokes and acting like everything was okay just to keep him calm. Y/N didn't fight him that time and the two made their way to the hospital. Y/N walked out that day with Eddie by her side and a bright white cast on that day with one signature already on it. Eds.

"A shower cap?"
Stan blinked in surprise before nodding his head. "Yeah, it's supposed to help keep the spiders out of your hair," he explained as he held the shower cap out for his friend. He had made a special trip out to the pharmacy to get her one, so he really hoped she would just take it, even if she didn't use it. Y/N smiled at the boy before taking the shower cap from him, the boy instantly relaxing in response. "Thanks, Stanley," she said before she put the shower cap on and looked to the others. They were all busy either talking or doing something else, so no one was looking at her except for Stan and Bill, the later smiling at her in an almost dreamy sort of way as he too wore his shower cap.
Bill chuckled softly at the sight of her and Y/N glanced at him before making a small face causing the two to burst into a round of laughter that had the other Losers looking at them and shaking their heads at how oblivious the two teens were. The Losers all looked away, leaving Bill, Y/N, and Stan the only ones paying attention once again.
"How did I look?" she questioned, directing it more towards Bill which Stan quickly realized. Stan smirked before walking way, neither of the teens noticing because of the fact that they were too caught up with each other. "B-B-Beautiful as always," Bill whispered, a blush dusting his cheeks at his own words. Y/N instantly blushed before smiling thankfully at Bill and leaning back in the hammock she had been lying in. She had to fight Richie and Eddie for it, but Eddie gave in almost instantly because he loved making the girl happy so it had been mostly her fighting Richie over the hammock before he had eventually caved and let her have it.
Now that she had the shower cap on, Y/N was busying herself with reading a Spider-Man comic while the others all goofed off, Bill secretly sneaking glances at her every so often. It had been one of the days they spent at the quarry which meant the evening was spent in their clubhouse that Ben had built under ground, thus leading to the spider problem. However, it was already getting quite late, so the Losers were slowly beginning to leave one by one. Y/N was too lost in her comic to really notice, but that didn't stop her from calling out a goodbye every so often. As for Bill, his eyes hadn't left the girl since she put the shower cap on, the sight being just too adorable for him to look away.
Stan and Ben were the last ones to leave the clubhouse that night and they rolled their eyes at the sight of Bill staring at their best friend, his feelings so obvious that they wondered if Y/N was really as smart as she claimed to be. "Night guys," Stan called out before he began to climb up the ladder, Ben quickly following. "Bye, Ben! Bye, Stan!" Y/N called out, momentarily looking up to smile at the boys before she was back to reading her comic.
"B-B-bye, guys," Bill said as he waved at the two. They just smirked at him and waved back before disappearing into the night, not noticing the look of confusion on Bill's face as they did so. Bill didn't think too much about the smirks his friends had sent him before he let his eyes flicker back over to Y/N who was looking up from the comic and at the empty clubhouse. "Woah. When did everyone leave?" she muttered in confusion.
"A w-w-while ago," Bill chuckled as he titled his head at the girl. "M-M-Maybe if you weren't t-t-too busy reading you would've n-n-noticed." Y/N gasped in fake shock before saying, "Let me tell you, Bill Denbrough. Peter Parker is nothing to joke about." Bill chuckled and she couldn't stop herself from smiling at the sight of the beautiful boy before she waved him over.
Bill was quick to walk over to her and she smiled before holding the comic out. "Peter Parker is above his time, Bill. He's smart, sarcastic, funny, and a freaking superhero! He genuinely cares about people and he is always-" Y/N began to ramble on about the superhero, but her words fell on deaf ears as Bill just stared at her in amazement.
His eyes flickered over her face and the way her eyelashes fluttered against her cheek or the way her e/c eyes would flicker between him and the comic as she excitedly talked about the superhero she loved so much. It was like he was trying to memorize every inch of her face which maybe he was. He never wanted to forget this moment, even if nothing significant was happening. Y/N just looked so beautiful, shower cap and all, and Bill couldn't stop himself from not wanting to remember every little detail of this moment. The smell of wood in the air mixing with the strawberry scent of Y/N's shampoo that swirled through the air because of how close they were. The creaking of wood and the sound of the night filling the air around them. Then there was him and Y/N, Bill kneeling down beside the hammock with one hand against his cheek while the other was holding onto Y/N's hand, something neither had noticed yet.
A small smile appeared on Bill's face as he watched the girl and she paused for a moment before staring at him with an unreadable expression. Finally, she returned the smile before grabbing onto his arm and tugging him slightly as she whispered, "Come here." Bill's face reddened a little, but he still managed to pull himself into the hammock, Y/N instantly snuggling up against him as his arm wrapped around her waist.
Y/N seemed to be unfazed by the new step of their relationship, the two having never cuddled before, let alone been this close unless it was just to hug. Instead, she was already reading the comic out loud, adding her own little comments here and there to make Bill laugh, knowing that each laugh made him rest his face against the side of hers momentarily before he pulled away to look at the comic.
Or at least she thought he was looking at the comic. But in reality, his eyes were on her. Just like they always were and like they always would be. For to him, there was no better way to spend his evening than admiring the girl that had stolen his heart since the first day he met her almost two years ago.

The basement was unusually quiet that night as the Party and the Losers all sat in Y/N's basement trying to comprehend the events that had taken place only an hour before. None of them were able to come to terms with what had happened and no one even knew what to say. The silence was one they could all feel, each of them distantly hearing Y/N's laugh or one of her sarcastic and witty comments. It was haunting almost and the group could feel themselves breaking more and more with each second that passed.
Everyone was affected by what had happened to Y/N, but they all knew Bill was affected in a deeper way than they were. While their love for Y/N was merely a platonic, more family type of love, what Bill felt for the girl was the opposite. He cared about her so much that the group could practically feel their hearts aching for him, especially when they saw him sitting blankly in the corner with a tear stained face, red eyes, and his jacket clutched in his shaking hands.
"What are we going to do?" Eddie finally whispered as he wiped at the tears on his face. All he could think about was his friend, the girl who had stood up for him and who had promised to not let anything happen to him. Eddie could only think about how he should've promised that to her as well. He should've insisted on going with her, making sure that the girl was safe and by his side. Then maybe what happened wouldn't have happened.
"We're getting her back," Steve said, all eyes falling on him as he tried to act like he was fine despite the tears that kept falling from his eyes. The tears were collecting on his chin, threatening to fall down, and Steve was quick to wipe them away with a sniff. "That's what we're fucking going to do."
"Oh, really? And how do you plan on doing that, Einstein?" Richie asked bitterly, his emotions being out of whack making him lash out. Steve narrowed his eyes at the boy. "Watch it, Trashmouth. At least I intend on saving Y/N," he replied.
Richie shot up from his spot, his red eyes focused on Steve as he glared at him. "What's that supposed to mean? You think I don't want to save her?" Richie asked. "Wouldn't be surprised," Wheeler muttered, making Richie turn his gaze on the boy. "Of course you have something to say. You always do, don't you?" Richie shot back.
Wheeler stood up from his spot, ignoring Eleven as she tried to grab him and pull him back down. "Mike," Eleven whispered, but the boy shook his head. "No, El. I'm done with this asshole," Wheeler said as he walked over to Richie. Richie was raising an eyebrow at the boy and they both crossed their arms as Wheeler came to a stop in front of him.
"Steve was right. He's actually trying to do someone to help Y/N while you're just sitting there pouting. Y/N needs our fucking help, but you can't get over yourself enough to realize it. So why don't you just shut the hell up for once, go sit back down with your little friends, and let us handle the situation," Wheeler said.
Richie scoffed in disbelief. "I'm sorry. I don't seem to remember when I asked for your opinion? Y/N's just as much my friend as she is yours and you have to be batshit crazy to believe that I don't want to go save her," Richie shot back. "Well I didn't exactly see you rushing to save her when she was trapped behind the gate," Wheeler told him. "Oh, you mean the gate that your girlfriend shut? The gate that, because it was shut, allowed for Y/N to get trapped in the fucking Upside Down? That gate?" Richie asked as he jabbed Wheeler in the chest.
"Touch me again. No, better yet. Disrespect my girl again. See what fucking happens," Wheeler growled. "Mike," Eleven sighed as she got up from her spot. She knew Y/N wouldn't want them arguing like this and it seemed that Eddie realized this too. "Guys. Calm down. We really don't need to-" Eddie began as he walked forward and began to pull Richie away, Eleven doing the same to Wheeler. However, that was when Wheeler delivered the final blow, "You don't deserve, Y/N. None of you losers do."
Eddie froze at that, his hand that was on Richie's arm immediately dropping. He turned his face to look at Wheeler and gave him an unamused look before saying, "You fucking asshole!" Eddie was about to lunge at Wheeler, but Beverly and Ben quickly pulled him back. However, the Party seemed to notice Eddie's small advance and they were all up in a flash and by Wheeler's side, the Losers doing the same for Richie and Eddie. None of them knew how it happened, but before they knew it, the once silent room was filled with arguing as both side took shots at the other.
"Y/N's life has been one hundred times better since she left Hawkins! You ever wonder why she never comes back to visit?"
"I thought the move was the worst thing to ever happen to her, but after meeting you guys I see I stand corrected!"
"Say that shit again. I dare you!"
"Y/N would leave you all in a heartbeat to come back to Hawkins and she wouldn't even look back!"
"You motherfuckers!"
It all became a blur after that, everyone from each side yelling and shoving each other as their pent up emotions poured out of them. They were all hurt and upset about Y/N and this was all they could think of doing at the moment to relieve some of the pain.
As for Bill, he was still sitting in the corner by himself. It was only when the fighting seemed to register in his brain that the boy looked up, a look of complete disbelief on his face as he clutched the jacket harder and stood up from his spot. "Hey!" Bill yelled, but the groups were too red faced and into the fight for them to notice his yelling. Bill huffed in frustration before shoving his way to the middle of the group. He pushed the sides away from each other before yelling at the top of his lungs, "Sit the fuck down!" Hearing those words coming out of the stuttering boy who had been sitting quietly in the corner had them all freeze, each of them realizing what had just happened. Reluctantly, the two groups went to sit back down, but not before glaring at the other side.
Bill scoffed as he stared at the groups and shook his head as tears filled his eyes. "A-A-Are you fucking k-k-kidding me?" he asked, finally getting all eyes to turn on him as he looked at them in disbelief. "We have a life at st-st-stake and you all are bickering like a bunch of f-f-four year o-o-olds!" Bill exclaimed, his eyes looking at the groups in disbelief. "Pull yourselves t-t-together and get up off your asses. We've got a f-f-friend to save!" Everyone's anger seemed to dissolve slightly as they watched the boy, looks of guilt flashing across some of their faces.
Bill shook his head and looked down at the ground as he tried to calm himself down. When he looked back up and began to speak, his voice was clear and strong, not a single piece of evidence of his stutter falling from his lips causing everyone to realize just how serious he was being.
"I know each of you is hurting. I know. Y/N meant a lot to all of us. But you all have to realize just who is in this room because every person in this room plays a major role in Y/N's life," Bill said. He glanced at the Party and gestured towards them. "You guys grew up with her. You helped shape her into the person she was and gave her some of the best experiences of her life. You showed her what friendship was and what family means. She knows what she does today because of you."
Bill then gestured towards the Losers and himself. "We're the ones who have helped her through a tough part of her life. We've protected her with our own lives and have loved her unconditionally. She's been one of our own since day one and she will be until the day she dies," he told them. Bill sighed before saying, "Look, we all care about her and she cares about each of us. We're her friends. We're her family. No one can tell any of us any different."
"That's why we're all upset because not only are we scared of losing her, but we are scared of her forgetting about us in any way. But I promise you that it's not happening for either side. She's always going to be a member of the Party and she's always going to be a part of the Losers' Club. She's like the in-between, the perfect mix of each group. She won't forget her past and she won't forget her present," Bill said as he pointed to each of the groups.
"Y/N has always put our needs in front of her own, but right now, we're going to have to put her above everything else. Each of you is going to have to push aside your differences, your egos, your selfishness, and your attitudes if you want to get Y/N back. Because the only way to get our girl back is if we work together," Bill told them, his eyes flickering over the guilty expressions of the groups as they realized Bill was right about everything he had said.
"How are we going to do that?" Richie asked softly. "Cause I'm with you, Bill. I'm just. . .I don't want to screw up and lose her. We're going to have to make sure everything is perfect and right now the major thing in our way is finding a way to get back to her."
"That's w-w-where the first part of my p-p-plan comes into play," Bill told him. He then turned to look at Eleven who was looking to the ground. As if sending his stare, the girl glanced up. "Eleven, is th-th-there any way you th-th-think you could open the g-g-gate? I meant if you were able to cl-cl-close it, shouldn't you be able t-t-to either make one or o-o-open it?"
"You want her to make a portal that goes to the Upside Down?" Wheeler asked, his tone a little hard as he became protective of his girlfriend. "I can do it," Eleven said with a nod causing Wheeler to look to her. Eleven sighed and glanced at her boyfriend. "Y/N is our friend, Mike. Don't tell me you wouldn't try anything to get back the girl who you've been friends with since the second grade." Wheeler looked down, his expression softening at Eleven's words. Eleven put a hand to the boy's cheek before whispering, "I owe it to her to try." Wheeler nodded slightly and Eleven smiled before letting her eyes flicker over to Bill. Bill gave the girl a small nod in thanks which Eleven quickly returned.
"Bill is right," Beverly called out from where she was sitting beside Ben and Stan. Everyone looked to her and she glanced up from her hands before letting her eyes flicker around the room. "Both groups have to work together. It's the only way we are going to win this thing. It's the only way we are going to get Y/N back."
Bill nodded in agreement before allowing his eyes to flicker over each of the people in the room. His gaze stopped on Steve who was looking at the boy with an unreadable expression on his face. But then Steve was giving him a small nod of approval and thanks and Bill couldn't help but smile as a small wave of relief washed over him.
"All th-th-those in favor of t-t-teaming up to save Y/N?" Bill questioned as he looked around the room. Everyone's hands shot up into the air almost instantly and Bill smiled softly before looking down at the jacket in his hands. He then looked back up and gave the group a nod.
"Let's g-g-go save our g-g-girl then, shall we?"

A/N: this was supposed to go up Monday but my internet went down Sunday night and we just got it back today, so sorry for the delay! I hope you all love it and enjoy! Also, I’m up for writing a part two if enough people want it.
Tumblr media
---------------
Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Will were all at Steve’s house, arguing over what movie to watch. It was their monthly movie night, and everyone was there. Well, almost everyone.
“Does anyone know when the hell Mike and El are gonna be here?” Dustin asked, annoyed with their constant flaking.
“How are we supposed to know? They show up whenever they’re done kissing. It’s bullshit,” Lucas answered.
“Woah, language!” Steve acted offended as he walked into the room with two large bowls of popcorn. Max quickly grabbed one and sank into the couch, shoveling the snack into her mouth. “You better share!” Lucas yanked the bowl from her and the two began bickering like they usually did.
Everyone stopped talking when the doorbell rang.
 “Is it them?” Will asked as Steve went and opened the door. He came back in the room a moment later with a letter in hand. “No, not them. Just the mailman,” Steve said as he opened the letter with a slight smile.
“Is that another letter?” Lucas asked. Max sat up, interested, “from who? Y/n?”
Steve didn’t answer their questions as he read the letter, a stupid grin on his face.
“Ooh, let me read it!” Dustin went to grab it but Steve quickly yanked his arm away, “no, absolutely not! This is a private letter for my eyes only.”
“Aw come on! Let me see!” Dustin complained. As Steve and Dustin were arguing, Max came up behind Steve and grabbed the letter, running to the other side of the room to read it. Steve ran after her, but Lucas, Will, and Dustin tackled him as Max began reading aloud.
“’It’s only been a month since I left, but it feels like forever. I’m counting down the days until I come back to Hawkins. I miss the sound of your voice and the smell of your cologne and the way you kiss me and how you-’ ohmygod, you two are disgusting!” Max stopped reading, her face going red.
“What? What does it say?” Lucas demanded.
“Read it for yourself! I’m not saying that out loud,” Max shook her head.
“Will you all stop?! That’s a private letter!” Steve yelled.
Lucas and Will ran over to Max, peering over her shoulder to read the rest of the note. Dustin didn’t budge from his spot on top of Steve. As the two boys scanned the page, they went wide eyed. “That is... graphic,” Lucas finally said, trying not to laugh.
“You two must really love each other,” Will spoke, making Steve sigh. “We do. And that’s why the letter is so important. So can you please give it back?” he asked, defeated. Dustin got off of him and Max handed over the letter.
“Why don’t you just call her? I don’t see the problem,” Lucas said.
“Because they don’t have phones in the middle of the woods, dipshit,” Max snipped.
“Jesus, I forgot. No need to be so rude,” Lucas huffed as Steve got up, the doorbell ringing once more. Will ran towards the front entrance.
“Mike and El are here!” Will called, walking back into the room a moment later with the the two teens in tow.
“About time” “Great! We can finally start the movie now!” Max and Dustin said at once. Lucas went over to the tv, shoving the VHS into the slot.
“What movie?” El asked, picking up the bowl of popcorn that Max left on the table.
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail; only one of the best movies of all time,” Will stated excitedly. “Ooh, good choice,” Mike flopped down on the couch, pulling El down beside him. The others got comfy and happily chatted away as the movie began. Max shushed loudly when the opening credits were over and everyone quieted down.
Throughout the movie, as everyone was laughing and making comments, Steve stayed quiet. Dustin took notice and waited for his chance to talk to the others. When Steve left to go to the bathroom, Dustin ran over to the tv and paused the movie.
“Dude! Why’d you stop it? This is the best part!” Mike complained. Lucas and Max chimed in with agreement.
“The movie can wait. But right now we need a plan to help Steve. He looks miserable,” Dustin answered.
“Maybe he does not like Monty Python,” El suggested. Will sighed, “No, Dustin’s right. He’s been acting like this all summer.”
“Why? Because of Y/n? She’s coming back in, like, three weeks,” Mike shrugged.
Max rolled her eyes, “please, Michael, if El was gone for half that long, you’d be complaining everyday.”
Mike didn’t respond, knowing she was right.
Dustin nodded decidedly, “alright then. What’s the plan?”
-
Steve told the group he was going to the bathroom, quickly leaving and heading up to his room. He wanted to have a fun evening, he really did, but the letter stuck in his head and he couldn’t think of anything else.
Walking over to his desk, Steve opened a drawer and set the new letter over a pile of identical ones. You and Steve sent letters back and forth at least once a week, but it still wasn’t enough. All he asked for was to hear your voice, but not even that wasn’t possible. Two months away as a camp counselor in the middle of fucking nowhere. Steve thought he would be fine without you for that long.
He was wrong.
Steve snapped out of his thoughts and closed the drawer, taking a deep breath before heading back downstairs. As he reentered the living room, the kids immediately stopped talking, all turning to look at him.
“What did I miss? Did something happen?” Steve asked, looking between the six of them.
“Nope. Nothing at all,” Lucas said casually.
“We were just waiting for you to come back. So we can keep watching,” Max added. Dustin quickly got up and started the movie again.
Steve was too mentally exhausted to care what they were talking about, so he sat back down without question.
-
A week passed before you got another letter in the mail. But it wasn’t from Steve. This time, it was from Dustin Henderson, claiming that Steve was in the hospital and you needed to come home immediately.
As soon as you read the letter, you ran to your boss with tears in your eyes, begging to be sent home early. Your boss knew there was no hope in arguing, so he complied, and you sent off a letter to Dustin saying you were on your way back to Hawkins as soon as possible.
“Y/n’s coming back!” Dustin announced, waving the letter in his hand as he walked into Mike’s basement.
“I still don’t think it was a good idea to lie to her about Steve,” Max replied.
“She’s probably gonna have a heart attack before she gets here,” Lucas agreed.
“Listen, I know it was messed up, but we literally haven’t seen Steve leave his house in over a week. It was necessary,” Dustin defended himself, but the others didn’t seem convinced. Dustin continued, “Y/n will be at the airport tomorrow at noon. We need to meet her there before she goes looking for Steve.”
“That’s nice and all, but how are we going to get there? None of us can drive,” Max pointed out. The others looked at each other knowingly, already having two people in mind.
-
“You told her Steve was in the hospital?!” Nancy exclaimed, looking at the six kids in front of her like they were insane before turning to her boyfriend, “Jonathan, did you know about this?”
Jonathan shook his head, “I did not. Because if I did, I would of told them it was a stupid and cruel idea.”
“That’s what I said!” Will huffed.
“Look, I fucked up. I get it. But it’s already done, so can we move forward please?” Dustin said, frustrated.
“Yeah, whatever. It’s 11:30 so we need to go,” Nancy and Jonathan got up, leading the younger teens outside and to the car. Nancy got in the drivers seat and took them all to the airport.
When the group finally saw you coming off the flight, you were a mess. Your eyes were red from crying and your clothes and hair were all over the place. You spotted the eight of them and ran over, dropping your bags to pull Nancy into a hug, “oh god, it’s so good to see you.”
Nancy smiled, hugging you back, “I know, I missed you. We all did.”
You pulled away, looking at everyone carefully. “Is... is he okay?” you asked quietly, scared of what the answer may be.
They all glanced at one another, silently arguing over who was going to tell you that Steve was perfectly fine. You took their silence as the exact opposite, and suddenly began crying. Jonathan pulled you into a comforting hug as Mike elbowed Dustin hard, forcing him to speak.
“No! No, don’t cry. Steve’s ok. He’s perfectly fine, and not in the hospital. He never was... I, uh, lied. to get you to come home early,” Dustin explained quickly.
You moved away from Jonathan, your sadness and worry turning to confusion then anger, “what?”
“Yeah, uh, sorry about that,” Dustin gave you the sweetest smile he could manage.
“You lied about my boyfriend being in the hospital?! I left my job and paid for a last minute plane ticket - and for what? What was this all for for?!” you said angrily, trying your best to keep your voice from rising.
“Steve has been miserable all summer. But it’s gotten worse the past few weeks. We wanted him to feel better, and the only way to do that was to bring you home,” Will stepped in to explain. You sighed, having a hard time to get mad at Will; he always meant well no matter how messed up the idea.
“Where is he? Does he know I’m here?” you questioned, wanting to see him as soon as possible.
“No! No, he doesn’t. He can’t. We have this whole plan and we’re gonna surprise him so you can’t see him until tonight,” Lucas said quickly.
You didn’t want to wait that long, but you doubted the kids would let you anywhere near Steve before their plan was complete. So you looked to Nancy instead, “this has all been very emotionally draining. And I need a drink.”
Nancy smiled knowingly, “I got you covered. Let’s go back to my house.”
You nodded heavily and turned back to the kids, “you can tell me your ridiculous plan on the way there... and this doesn’t mean I’m not still beyond pissed at you all.”
The six of them nodded quickly, not wanting to push you. You followed Nancy outside, Jonathan grabbing your bags for you and hurrying after the group.
-
Dustin, El, and Mike banged on Steve’s door. He didn’t answer the first time, so they persisted. Finally the door was yanked open and Steve answered with groan, “what?!”
“We have a surprise for you,” Dustin grinned.
“Does it involve going out?” Steve asked. Dustin nodded. “Then I’m not interested,” Steve decided.
“Just listen to us! It’s about Y/n,” Mike said quickly.
Dustin began explaining before Steve could say anything, “we’ve been trying to find away to get into contact with Y/n, and we finally figured it out. You know my ingenious invention, Cerebral? Well, we sent a letter to Y/n and there’s a way you’ll be able to talk to each other!”
Steve watched him, a blank expression on his face, “nice idea, but that’s not possible. If phones don’t work there, how is your stupid little radio going to?”
“It’s different. Landlines and radios work on different frequencies, and interact in different ways. There’s no phones at Y/n’s camp, but there’s radios. So it’ll work. We’ve tested it,” Dustin insisted, trying his best to be convincing.
“It’s true,” El nodded. Mike smiled at Steve in support.
Steve was desperate, and willing to try anything, “fine. When?”
“In an hour. So go take a shower - you smell awful,” Mike said.

An hour later, Steve was hiking up to the highest point in Hawkins, while you hid a bit further down on the other side of the hill with Lucas and Max. Dustin, Mike, El, and Will lead Steve to where Cerebral was set up, talking to him about how you were waiting on the other end.
“This better work or I’m going to beat you with your own equipment,” Steve said to Dustin, no hint of sarcasm in his voice.
“It’ll work. I promise,” Dustin assured, sitting down by the main radio. Dustin pretended to work on getting a proper connection, but it seemed to be failing, and Steve was growing impatient.
“I swear to god, Henderson, you took me all the way up here and got my hopes up and the damn radio wont even work,” he said angrily.
Dustin didn’t reply, turning a few more knobs as you sneaked up the hill and stood behind Steve.
“Steve?”
When he heard your voice, Steve quickly moved closer to the radio, surprised that it was actually working and how clear your voice sounded, “Y/n? Y/n, is that you?”
“Steve,” you said again, a bit louder, and he froze, realizing the voice wasn’t coming from the radio. Turning around, his eyes landed on you and a grin spread across his face.
“Hi,” you grinned back and Steve ran over, scooping you up in a tight hug and spinning you around, both of you laughing from happiness.
He put you down and pulled you into a deep kiss as you wrapped your arms around his neck. The kids watched on, proud of their work.
“You came home,” Steve stated, keeping you close.
“The kids told me you were in the hospital. I came home as soon as I could. They were lying, obviously,” you explained. Steve was too happy to have you back to be mad about that right now, so instead he just pulled you closer to him.
“I missed you so much,” you breathed, running your hands down his chest and kissing him. Steve kissed you back with an almost desperation, and the six kids realized things were about to get heated.
“Should, we uh...,” Lucas trailed, pointing down to the bottom of the hill. “Yep. Mmhm,” the others nodded and the group quickly ran off, leaving you and Steve on your own.
You pulled Steve down so the two of you were laying on the grass, never breaking the kiss in the process. He moved you on top of him, running his hands through your hair. You pulled away slightly to catch your breath, “I love you so much.”
“I love you too. It hurts how much I love you,” Steve answered, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
“Did you get my last letter?” you asked as you ran a hand across his cheek.
“I sure did,” Steve smiled slightly.
“I meant every word. And those things I promised I’d do to you when I got back...,” you started playfully, but was cut off when Steve rolled you over so he was hovering over you.
“I know you’d never break a promise. So just kiss me, idiot,” Steve said teasingly. You grinned and pulled him down to meet your lips once more.

End.

Warning: Language, hand cutting, the Demogorgon? Typos probs
Word Count: 4.2k
You and Nancy sit in the waiting room of the police station while Hopper talks to Jonathan.
“Hey, thanks for uh…” Nancy swings her fist in a punching motion.
“No problem. I just couldn’t deal with him anymore” You reply.
Two police officers come walk through the waiting room and into Hopper’s office.
“Hey chief you’re gonna want to see this.” You overhear one policeman say. You watch as Hopper walks outside and goes to Jonathan’s car. You forgot that all the traps and weapons were still in the back of his car. You and Nancy exchange an “oh shit” look.
Hopper plops down the box right in front of you all. Joyce starts looking through it, “What is all this?”
“Why don’t you ask your son, it was in his car,” Hopper says.
Jonathan nervously looks at you and Nancy, as if asking for help.
“You won’t believe us if we told you.” You speak up.
“Try me,” Hop responds.
You three then try to tell them everything that happened. Barb going missing, Nancy seeing the monster and getting sucked up into a tree, you show them the picture of the monster.
“You say blood draws this thing?” Hopper asks.
“It’s just a theory.” Nancy explains.
 The door to the office opens and in comes an angry mom and her son. You recognize the kid from Dustin’s class.
“She broke my arm with her mind! She’s bald. She’s a freak!” The kid goes on and on telling a story to one of the police officers. There’s only one person he could be talking about.
“Eleven,” you say. Hopper looks at you.
“You know who he’s talking about?” He asks.
“Yeah, my brother and his friends found him out in the woods one night. She can do stuff with her mind and she’s been saying she knows Will and knows where he is.” You say,
Hopper tells everyone they need to go and rushes everyone out to his car. He drives to the Wheeler’s house only to find it swarmed with white vans.
“Shit, shit shit!” Hoppers yells.
“What is going on?! My parents are in there!” Nancy shouts back.
Hopper proceeds to tell you about Hawkins lab, how they have this gate thing that is similar to what you and Jonathan saw in the tree, how Will could be hiding in there, how Eleven escaped from there, and how anyone who knows about this could be in danger.
“Jesus Christ.” You respond as you watch helicopters fly overhead.
“We need to find the boys and Eleven before they do. Do either one of you know where they might be?” Hopper asks you and Nancy. Nancy shakes her head no.
“I don’t know where they are, but I know how we can find out.” You respond.
*       *      *
The Byers’ house was filled with Christmas lights. You couldn’t believe it. Jonathan runs into Will’s room and grabs the walkie talkie. He hands it to Nancy.
Nancy pressed the button on the walkie talkie and began talking,
“Mike, I know you’re there Mike… I need you to answer Mike.”
No response. You motion for Nancy to hand over the walkie talkie.
“Boys, Dustin, it’s Y/N. I know you probably think this is a trick but it’s not. We need you to answer.”
No response. Hopper snatches the walkie talkie out of your hands.
“Listen kid this is the chief, if you’re there, pick up. We know you’re in trouble, we know about the girl. We can protect you, we can help you, but we need you to pick up.”
More silence. You sigh. Right when you are all about to give up, you hear the crackle of the walkie talkie.
“This is Mike. I copy.”
*     *     *
You, Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy all sit around the dining room table while you wait for the chief to return with the kids. The sound of his car rolling up catches your attention. You run out the door and go hug Dustin then smack him on the side of the head.
“Ow!”
“Stop getting yourself into trouble, that’s my job!” You say
You see Eleven standing behind Dustin.
“Oh, hi Eleven. It’s good to see you again. I like your, uh I like your dress.” You say, still unsure of how to communicate with this strange child.
*     *     *
“Eleven says Will is in the upside down, he’s hiding from something, a monster we call the Demogorgon” Mike begins to explain. “Ok so here is a tightrope and this is us, we are the acrobat. Now we can only walk on the tightrope from side to side. This is the flea, the flea can also go side to side, but it can also go underneath the rope. Which in this case is the upside down.”
“Ok so how do we get to the upside down?” You ask.
“There’s a gate. We think it’s at Hawkins Lab.” Lucas chimes in.
“I’ve seen it.” Hopper says. He goes in detail to describe what he saw in Hawkins lab. Joyce asks Eleven if she can try to reach Will. Eleven agrees. The group sets up everything she needs. You all sit around the table while a radio plays static. Blood starts to drip down Eleven’s nose. You hold your breath hoping she will find something. She opens her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I can’t find him.” She says.
Eleven goes to the bathroom while the group tries to come up with a plan. There’s shouting and arguing, you barely hear Eleven come back into the room.
“The bathtub” Eleven states.
“What?” Joyce asks.
“I can use the bathtub.” Eleven says.
Dustin calls Mr. Clarke to find out how much salt you all will need for this to work out. 1500 pounds of salt.
*       *      *
Everyone gets assigned a job. Dustin and Lucas are getting the kiddy pool set up in the school gym, Nancy and Mike are connecting to the hot water, Hopper and Jonathan are getting the salt, and you and Joyce get Eleven all ready. Once everything is all set up, Eleven gets ready to emerge into the bath.
“Do you think you can look for Barb too?” You ask Eleven. She nods yes.
After a while of sitting and waiting, the lights flicker off.
“Barb.” Eleven states. Nancy’s ears prick up. “Is she ok?” Nancy asks, concern in her voice.
“Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone, gone.” Eleven repeats over and over. You look over to Nancy with wide, tear filled eyes. She throws her hand over her mouth as she lets out a sob.
“Castle Byers….Will” Eleven pipes up again.
“Tell him, tell him I’m on my way! Tell him his mom is coming and to stay right there!’ Joyce says.
Shortly after, Eleven shakes in the water and quickly comes up, hugging onto Joyce for comfort. Hopper announces he’s going to go get Will and Joyce insists she comes with, leaving you, the boys, Eleven, Nancy, and Jonathan alone at the school. You look around for Nancy and Jonathan only to find that they have wandered out of the gym.
You stumble upon them sitting in the hallway, Jonathan has his arm wrapped around Nancy as she silently cries into his shoulder. They both looked up at you.
“Let’s go kill that son of a bitch.”
*       *      *
Before you go kill this “Demogorgon” or whatever it is, you go say bye to Dustin.
“Hey Dustin,” you call him over, “I’m about to go do some badass shit right now. I need you to stay here and to stay safe, got it?” He gives you the thumbs up.
“I love you, Dusty.” You say as you pull him in for a tight hug.
“Love you too, I can’t breathe.” You quickly let go of him and head out of the gym, giving Dustin one last wave.
*     *     *
The plan was to kill the Demogorgon or at least try to distract it while Hopper and Joyce went into the upside down to get Will. The Byers’ house was covered in traps and gasoline. You hammer nails into a bat while Jonathan and Nancy get the bear trap set up.
“Ok, remember, straight into Will’s room and don’t step on the trap,” Jonathan began, “then-“
“Wait for the yoyo to move,” Nancy cut in.
“Then we light this son of a bitch up.” You finish off.
Of course, the Demogorgon was attracted to blood and of course you couldn’t just do a small little prick, you had to slice your whole hand. Nancy started to count down.
“1….2….3!” You wince as the sharp knife cuts your hand. You all watch as blood drips on the floor. You grab the bandages and start wrapping your hand up, Jonathan and Nancy help each other get cleaned up. Someone starts banging on the door, startling everyone.
“Jonathan! Are you there man? It’s… it’s Steve!”
You turn your head to Nancy and Jonathan and mouth “what the fuck?” They both shrug. You go to answer the door.
“Henderson?” Steve asks, obviously surprised to see you there.
“Steve, you need to leave.” You start to close the door, but he puts his arm out to stop it.
“Y/N I messed up, I messed up, is Jonathan here?” He looks down at your bandaged hand.
“Hey, what happened to your hand?” He asks, concern in his voice.
“What? Oh nothing.”
“Did, did he do this to you?”
“No definitely not!” Steve barges his way in, pushing you to the side.
“Nancy?” Steve looks around, “What the hell is going on? What’s that smell? Is that gasoline?”
“Hey man you need to get out.” Jonathan says pushing him towards the door. Steve won’t budge.
“Steve please you need to leave.” You say, Nancy grabs the gun and points it at Steve.
“Steve, get out.”
“Woah woah woah wait WHAT?!” Steve starts yelling.
“Nancy put the gun down,” you say trying to get her to relax. She starts counting down from three. The lights start flickering. You and Jonathan look at each other with panicked eyes as you start trying to get Nancy’s attention.
“Nancy! The lights!” You shout. She looks around and points the gun down. You grab the bat, Jonathan grabs a crowbar, and Nancy holds onto her gun.
“Where is it?”
“Do you see it?”
“I can’t see anything!” You all start to shout.
“See what? What are you guys talking about?!” Steve yells.
Just then the ceiling caves in, the Demogorgon falls to the ground. It starts to stand up causing all of your heads to look up at it. Its mouth opens up as it roars.
“Shit, run!” You scream. Nancy and Jonathan take the lead down the hallway, you grab onto Steve’s hand and pull him with you.
“Jump!” You yell at Steve as you approach the bear trap. Once all of you are safely in Will’s room Jonathan slams the door.
You all wait for the yoyo to move.
“This is crazy, this is CRAZY, THIS IS CRAZY!” Steve starts yelling again.
“Steve! Calm down!” You say, knowing full well he won’t calm down as you, yourself isn’t even calm. The yoyo still hasn’t moved, you don’t hear anything. Jonathan slowly opens the door. You four make you way out of the room, Steve gripping onto your arm.
“Where’d it go?” You whisper.
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on!” Steve asks.
Nancy turns around, “It’s going to come back, you need to leave!” She tells him. He looks at you and you raise your eyebrows at him. He rushes out the door. As soon as he leaves the lights start to flicker, then all the lights go out.
“Can you guys see it?”
“I can’t see anything!”
You can hear it, but you can’t see it.
“Y/N! Behind you!” You hear Jonathan yell. You turn around and come face to face with it.
“Oh shit,” you say right before it tackles you to the ground. Its arm knocks the bat out of you hand and out of your reach. You start panicking. It opens its mouth and screams in your face, you can feel the hot breath on your face. You squeeze your eyes shut waiting for it to chomp down on you, but it never does. You open your eyes in time to see Steve hitting it with the bat, making it get off of you.
“Steve! Go towards the trap!” Nancy yells.
You try to catch your breath as you stand up.
“Y/N are you ok?” Nancy asks. You nod.
“It’s in the trap! It’s in the trap!” Steve yells to Jonathan. Jonathan flicks the lighter and throws it down, lighting the hallway on fire. You can hear the screeches of the Demogorgon and then you hear silence. Jonathan grabs the fire extinguisher and puts out the fire. Once the smoke is cleared you see the bear trap is empty except for some slimy, bubbly, goo that swarms the bear trap. You let out a deep breath you didn’t know you were holding in. Steve reaches out for your hand.
“Hey are you ok?” He asks.
“Um, yeah, I think so.” You say, unaware of why he was being so nice to you. You look down at your hand that Steve is still holding, he follows your gaze and quickly lets go.
“Good, good to hear,” He says. You notice the lightbulbs lighting one by one, down the hallway and to the front door.
“Where is it going?” Nancy asks.
“I don’t think that’s the Demogorgon,” Jonathan says, “Mom?” He says quietly.
You all stand around quite awkwardly, unsure of what to do next.
“Dustin! I have to go check on Dustin!” You say.
“I’ll give you a ride, Henderson.” Steve says. You look at him in disbelief. “Unless you want to walk?” He asks.
“Um no yeah I’ll take a ride.” You respond.
“Hey Y/N, will you make sure Mike is ok?” Nancy asks. You nod yes, as you hug Nancy and Jonathan goodbye, telling them to be safe.
As you follow Steve out the door and into his car, your stomach fills with butterflies. The first couple minutes of the car ride is filled with awkward silence.
“You gonna tell me where I’m going or am I just supposed to guess?” He asks, jokingly.
“Oh! Right, just head to the middle school please.” More silence.
Steve ends the silence once again. “Listen, Y/N, I’m really sorry about everything. About being an asshole, I really am sorry.”
“It’s ok…-“
“No, no it’s not ok. I lost my best friend because what, I wanted to be popular?”
You weren’t sure how to respond. After you didn’t respond, Steve turned on the radio, Your song by Elton John came on.
“Oh my god! Do you remember this song?” Steve excitedly asks.
Memories flooded back in your mind of you and Steve dancing around his pool during the hot summers while listening to this song, it was your guy’s go to song. It really was “your song.”
You giggle as you and Steve start to sing along. Soon the quietly singing turns into loud singing and laughing.
“I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND!”
“I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND! THAT I PUT DOWN IN WORDS!”
“How wonderful life is”
“Now you’re in the world!” When the song ends you, both erupt into laughter. The car pulls up to the middle school, there are ambulances and police cars.
“Oh my god...” You say are you rapidly unbuckle your seatbelt and open the car door. You run to a policeman, Steve following quickly behind you.
“I’m sorry miss, I can’t let anyone in.” He says not letting you past the barricade.
“Her brother’s in there, man, come on.” Steve says. The policeman sighs and lets you both in.
“Dustin?” You shout, “Dustin!”
“Y/N!” Dustin comes running out from behind an ambulance, tackling you into a hug.
“Why are you with Steve Harrington?” Dustin whispers.
Honestly, I don’t even know.” You respond.

At the hospital, everyone waits in the waiting room for Will to wake up. The three boys are all sleeping on each other, Nancy and Jonathan sit together, and you and Steve are sitting next to each other.
“Hey, Henderson?” Steve says.
“Yeah?” You look up at him.
“I was wondering if, maybe after all this is over, you would want to go out to eat or something? You know to catch up and make up for lost time?”
“Sure, Harrington, I would like that.” You say, grinning like a doofus.
Jonathan comes in the waiting room and wakes up the three boys, “Hey guys, Will’s awake.”
They all jump out of their chairs and run to Will’s room. You pat Steve on the knee and get up to go see Will. You lean against the doorway as the boys talked to Will. Will looks up and sees you.
“Y/N!” You make your way over to hug him.
“It’s good to have you back Will.”

~November 14th, 1983~
You’re pacing around your room. Tonight is the night you and Steve are going to go out. You don’t know why you were so nervous, maybe because you thought it would be awkward, or because you didn’t know if it was actually a date or not, but you knew deep down you were just scared that all those buried feelings you had for him would all come back out.
Dustin walked by your room and noticed you pacing.
“You’re creating a draft.” He says. You roll your eyes at him. The doorbell rings.
“I’ll get it!” You hear your mom shout.
“No! No! I’ll get it!” You say pushing Dustin out of the way.
“Who’s here?” Dustin asks.
“No one, it’s no one!” You say rushing to get to the door. By the time you get there, Steve is already standing in your living room.
“Y/N! You didn’t tell me Steve was coming over! Steve you look so handsome! It’s been so long!” your mom says as she pulls him into a hug.
Steve looks at you and smiles. “I’m sorry.” You mouth to him. He waves it off.
Before your mom has a chance to say anything else you grab Steve’s hand and head towards the door.
“Ok, we gotta go, bye!” You slam the door shut.
“You’re mom’s the best, I think we should stay and talk to her!” Steve jokes as he makes his way to his car.
“Ha, ha, so funny.”
He opens the car door for you, and you get it. He walks around to the other side and gets in.
“Alright Harrington, where are we headed?” You ask, still unsure of where you are going.
“Remember that one spot we found when we were little, and it was like by a small pond and there was that gazebo?”
“Of course I remember.”
“Well I thought, we could stop and get some snacks and things, then go and have a little picnic there. I have blankets in the trunk and some pillows. It’ll be just like old times.”
You hum in agreement.
You’re first stop is at the store. Joyce is working.
“You can go ahead and pick out the snacks, I’m going to talk to Joyce.” You say to Steve. Steve nods then goes off to get the snacks.
“Hi Joyce!” You say.
“Y/N! It’s good to see you!” she pulls you into a hug.
“How is Will?” You ask.
“Oh he’s doing so great, it’s so great to have him back home.”
“I’m sure! And how are you and Jonathan?”
“Just great!” Steve comes up and puts all the snacks on the counter. Joyce rings you guys up. You start getting your wallet out.
“Oh no, I got it.” Steve says.
“No, no, no, I can pay.” You say.
“No, Y/N I’m paying.” Steve insists.
You say goodbye to Joyce, she looks to Steve then winks to you. You laugh and wave goodbye.
*    *    *
You and Steve set up the pillows and blankets and lay out all the food.
“You got gummy worms!” You say.
“I remembered they were your favorites.” Steve says. You grin at him.
You and Steve spend the night talking and laughing and catching up.
“Oh, I have a really good one, what is blue and doesn’t weight a lot?” You ask
Steve thinks for a little bit. “I don’t know, what?”
You start laughing before you even get the punchline out. “Light blue!” You manage to get out in between chuckles.
“Oh my god! That was terrible!” Steve says, while laughing. You look over at him.
“I really missed you, Steve.” He turns and looks at you.
“Oh, believe me, I’ve missed you like crazy. I’m glad we’re doing this.”
“Yeah. Me too.” You smile up at him.
*    *    *
Steve dropped you back off at your house later that night. When he pulled up to your driveway, he got out of the car and started to walk up to your front door.
“What are you doing?” You ask him.
“Well, I should say bye to your mom.”
“Oh no, no,-“ He cuts you off by letting himself into your house.
“Oh you guys are back!” Your mom was sitting on the couch with your cat, Mews. “How was your date?” She asked.
Your cheeks turned red. “It wasn’t a date mom.” You say.
“It wasn’t?” Steve asks.
“Oh was it?” You ask
“I thought it was.”
“So it was a date! What did you guys do?” Your mom chimes in. You fill her in on all the details.
“Well I should go, it was nice to see you again Mrs. Henderson.” Steve says as your mom pulls him in for another hug.
“You too dear, tell your mom I said hello!”
You walk Steve back to the door.
“Tonight was really fun, we should do it again sometime.” You say
“Yeah, yes! I would love that.” Steve says. You both stand there awkwardly, unaware if you should hug or just high five. Steve pulls you in for a hug and rests his chin on top of your head. It might have been the longest hug you’ve ever had. You both pull away.
“Well, I’ll see you around Henderson.” Steve says as he makes his way to his car.
“See you round Harrington.”

~December 24th. 1983~
Ever since that night, you and Steve hung out a couple more times, having movie nights or going out to eat. You were back to smiling at each other in the hallways. It’s definitely safe to say you were catching feelings for him, although you tried not to, you just couldn’t help it. You would say hi to Nancy and Jonathan in the hallways, and occasionally sit by them at lunch. It was winter break now and things were almost completely back to normal.
You and your mom were in the living room doing some last minute wrapping when the doorbell rang. You went to go answer it, only to see Jonathan.
“Oh, Jonathan, hi.” You say
“Hi, I was just on my way to pick up Will from the Christmas party and was wondering if you wanted to come too?” He asks.
“Oh, yeah! I have to get Dustin anyways.” You grab your coat and say bye to your mom.
You and Jonathan get in his car and make your way to the Wheeler’s house.
“So…you and Nancy?” You ask Jonathan.
“Me and Nancy?” He asks back.
“Aren’t you guys dating?” You ask.
“Oh, um, no she actually, she got back with Steve.” He says. Your heart sank.
“She got back with Steve? When?”
“Oh not too long ago, right before we left for winter break. I guess he’s a “changed man” or whatever.”  You couldn’t believe it, you could feel your heart breaking little by little.
You arrived at the Wheeler’s. You and Jonathan were greeted by Mrs. Wheeler and made your way to the basement.
“Gross, have you guys been farting down here all day or what?” You joke.
“It was Dustin!” Lucas says pointing at Dustin causing everyone to laugh.
“Alright Dustin and Will you guys ready to head out?” Jonathan asks.
They say yes and say goodbye to Lucas and Mike.
Nancy comes down the stairs just as you guys were about to leave.
“Jonathan wait! I have a present for you.” She hands him a present.
While Jonathan talks to Nancy, you and Dustin go say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler.
“Merry Christmas Mrs. Wheeler!” You and Dustin say.
“You too! Tell your mother Merry Christmas!” she says.
Mr. Wheeler is in the living room sitting in his recliner. You walk into the living room and you immediately regret it. Steve is sitting on the couch waiting for Nancy. You pretend not to see him as you say Merry Christmas to Mr. Wheeler. You turn to walk out of the room but catch Steve’s eye.
“Harrington.” You say coldly. Before he gets a chance to say anything, you walk out of the room.
*    *    *
Well, things were officially back to normal, or as normal as they could be, unfortunately they wouldn’t stay normal for long.

⋆    —–   CARHOP COOL, 3 and a 1/2.
summary: it’s time for a two day vacation to the beach, aka lake tippecanoe. pairing: steve harrington x reader, au!post season three word count: 1.8k, mostly world building a/n: have some good ol’ establishing-the-au fic! and billy! and steve’s mom! things are gonna get a little freaky up at the lake. here’s a filler chapter.
                                      ⤌   PREVIOUS   ⋆   NEXT   ⤍
Steve’s driveway is crowded.
Tippecanoe, two hours North from Hawkins, was home to the Harrington family’s lakehouse. His mom had asked, earlier in the summer, if Steve would be willing to ride up and make sure everything was alright between rentals -- she’d cheerily added, “Go up for a day or two. Bring Dustin, Robin, whoever -- you kids need a vacation after everything that happened, y’know?”
(Janine Harrington had, in recent weeks, become infinitely closer with her son -- when men in suits had brought a bloodied Steve home that night in early July, priding him as a hero, a lot of things changed. He’d opened up about everything in the days following, spurring Janine to reach out to Mrs. Wheeler and Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Byers and even Hopper, whom her husband couldn’t stand, with kind words and promises that their children were allowed over anytime -- they were bound together now, by Government NDA’s.
It was a nice change, though, between her and Steve -- there was a lot more trust now.)
His mom is chatting happily with Mrs. Byers by the mailbox as Will grabs his towel and cooler, loading the stuff into the Wheeler family hatchback. Nancy unlocks it for him between chatting with Jonathan. Mike helps, grin turning upwards as Dustin arrives with Lucas on his heels, bikes dropped by the mailbox as the boys laugh and launch into one another’s arm.
“Vacation, baby!”
Steve, carrying his own towel over his shoulder, laughs when Dustin finally calls out, sneakers pounding across the hot asphalt of the Harrington home’s driveway.
They both meet half-way.
“Steve!” he gets a toothless grin, “It’s vacay time!”
“Oh, you know --” the handshake is quick, calculated, and well-practiced, “We’re gonna get our tan on --”
The roar of a Camaro startles the group from their laughter.
Billy Hargrove rolls around the cul-de-sac, pulling up behind the Byer’s car and the mailbox before promptly cutting the engine and the Judas Priest track.
Max, with dueling, flaming red braids, hops from the front seat with a beaming smile.
The boys give a victorious cry.
“Zoomer!”
Billy’s slow to exit the car, aviators perched on his nose. The Def Leppard shirt’s sleeves has been chopped off, really hammering home the whole ‘suns out, guns out’ motto the lifeguard seems to be living by this summer.
After the Battle of Starcourt, a lot of things changed.
The biggest change, though, seemed to be in Billy Hargrove -- post Mind Flayer, he’d been exposed to the world the Upside Down created, the world his sister and everyone else had been living in for the last year; he’d come out of the haze, out of the flayed, and cried into Max and Eleven’s arms, nothing but apologies on his mouth in the wake of the destruction.
Steve remembers seeing him in the back of one of the ambulances, holding Max’s hand, talking.
Not fighting, not screaming, not... being Billy.
Steve and Billy shared a look, then. Truce was what it meant.
At first, Billy tried to pretend the whole ‘Mind Flayer’ thing never happened.
But pretending didn’t get rid of the nightmares. And soon, Billy Hargrove was knocking on Will Byer’s door mid-D&D game looking for help, for someone to talk to.
The apology had come a few days later.
Billy had strolled up the Family Video, scaring the shit out of Steve, before offering his hand and a genuine apology. Robin watched on, a bit slack-jawed.
“I was a fucking asshole,” the blonde said slowly, “I’m sorry, man.”
Steve blinked at his hand.
After a moment, he shook it.
“It’s cool, dude,” Steve said before he could stop himself, “You didn’t know.”
“Doesn’t excuse the fact I was a dick, though.”
A look of surprise fleeted across Steve’s face. “Fair.”
Billy smiled, then, different from every other time he’d seen it. It wasn’t for show. It was... real. When Billy left, Robin had made a sound of pure shock before asking what the hell that was about.
“He beat the shit out of me,” Steve said, watching him drive away, “Tried to beat up Lucas, all while we were being hunted by Demogorgans... Just, y’know, was a genuine shit-bag.”
“Seems like he’s changed.”
“No kidding.”
“Trauma,” Robin chirps as she moves to sort the VHS’s, “is a hell of a thing.”
The malice that was there before the Fourth of July is gone. Instead, Billy smiles as he hauls Max’s cooler from the trunk of the navy sports car, offering Lucas a causal knuckle-touch before clapping Steve on the back.
“Hey man.”
“Hey Billy,” Steve chirps, “Nice outfit.”
“It’s hot out, alright,” he battles back, clearly amused, “I gotta work on my tan.”
“You coming with?” Steve asks, lips pulled into a smirk as he crosses his arms and shifts from foot to foot. His white converse are stark against the dark driveway, “We’ve got room.”
“Naw,” Billy breathes, crossing his arms, “I gotta shift at the pool -- thanks for the invite, though.”
“Yeah,” Steve shrugs, “It’s cool -- You’re one of the gang now.”
Billy’s lips quirk. Steve can tell that means something to him. Another clap on the back. Billy begins heading to his car, calling out to Max as he does.
“See ya, kid -- be safe, alright?” he waves his finger across the group, “All a’ you.”
She gives her brother a grin. “’Kay, loser.”
“‘Kay, brat,” he snaps his gum, shoots her a smile, and falls into the driver’s seat.
As Billy leaves, the familiar rumble of Chief Hopper’s Blazer arrives to the drop-off point. Jim makes the small-talk quick, thank god, he’s terrifying, citing that he’s late for work and Mrs. Johnson has already called the station three times about her cat getting out, but makes a point to shake Steve’s hand as he leaves, telling him to look out for El.
Eleven has her dad’s pair of aviators on and an old baseball cap. She’s grinning.
“Vacation,” she says.
Steve’s got his hands on his hips, eyeing the growing party, when Dustin speaks.
“Hey,” he says slowly, looking around, “Where’s your girlfriend?”
Steve stammers. “She’s not --”
“Robin?” Mike asks, confused.
“No, not Robin --” Steve makes a face. “That’s gross.”
“Ohhhh,” says Lucas, pointing, “The one with the hair.”
Will makes a face of genuine frustration. “With the hair?”
“Real specific, Lucas,” jabs Max.
“Y’know,” he waves his hands, “Roll-o girl!”
The group exhales “oooohhhhh” at once. Steve’s face is in his hands.
He’s just glad Nancy didn’t over the conversation -- she’s too busy with Jonathan, chatting with his mom and saying good-bye.
(Though things were fine between them, it was still awkward -- the break-up was a one-sided-sort-of-rough, especially with the Jonathan being thrown into the mix. But, Nancy was happy and that was really all Steve cared about -- she was nice and smart and kind and she deserved to be happy especially after everything, and despite the wound it had created in Steve’s chest, he couldn’t hold the break-up against her.
That was a weird time... things were weird. Things sometimes are still weird, but to her credit, she still treats him like a good friend and he tries to do the same. Just... sometimes it’a a lot. Especially when Jonathan is around.
Steve just opts to keep a polite distance, y’know?)
“Can I just say, one,” Steve raises a finger, “She is not my girlfriend --”
“But, you like her, right?” says Dustin, completely serious, “She’s cool, she’s cute, she can rollerblade, all great traits in a girlfriend --”
Steve narrows his eyes, finger still in the air. “I’m talking right now, Dustin, okay, I’m talking.”
“Right, sorry.”
“She’s not my girlfriend,” he repeats, hissing, “And two --”
Steve doesn’t get to finish his sentence, because the blaring of Duran Duran’s Girls on Film fills the entire neighborhood as you pull into the cul-de-sac. Robin is in the passenger’s seat, sunglasses pulled down her nose as she dances and mouths the words into her suntan lotion. You’re driving, snorting at her moves as you park the car and pop the trunk, mimicking Robin as you get out of the car -- you can barely do it you’re laughing so hard.
The cabbage patch dance move has never looked worse. You don’t really care.
Mostly because you see Steve and he’s grinning. You wave. He mirrors.
“She is cute,” says Max, leaning against Lucas and watching the exchange, “Your girlfriend’s cute, Harrington.”
“Shut up, Max.”
She mimics a zipping motion over her lips with her hand as Steve strides by. She tosses the imaginary key.
You move to cut the engine, spurring Robin to move up the driveway with a smile -- she’s quick to greet Steve’s mom with a hug.
You’re quickly swept into a handshake by the older woman in question.
She looks like Steve -- they have the smile doe-eyes and dark hair, same nose and same excited demeanor -- and you can’t say you’re surprised when you give her your name and she sweeps you in a hug.
“It’s so good to finally meet you,” she says warmly, “Steve’s told me so much about you!”
You’ve seen Janine Harrington around before at baseball games and after-school functions. Back then, though, you were dodging any interaction you could with her son. Now, you’re excited to him idle up beside his mom with a grin. He rocks back on his heels.
“Ready?”
You nod. Robin pats your back, holding onto your arm before turning on her text-book parent charm. “Mrs. Harrington, is it alright if she drives, as well? We figured it might be better than all packing into Nancy’s car -- safer, too.”
“Of course,” she says with a smile, “Steve knows the way, he’s been going up there with us since he was a little baby --”
“Yep,” he chirps, cutting that off quick, “I’ll just, uh, I’ll ride with you -- Nancy can follow us.”
“Cool kid mobile, assemble,” Robin calls out, breaking from Steve, yourself and his mom, “We call Dustin!”
“Drive safe,” Mrs. Harrington offers as the group splits into the separate hatchbacks, “Call when you get there!”
“Alright, mom!”
“Bye, Mrs. Harrington!”
Robin shoves Steve into the passenger side of your car, winking, as you clamber into the driver’s seat. Robin happily sits between Dustin and Will, mirroring Steve as she drops her sunglasses down from her hair.
The other car, quickly named The Couples Car, holds the rest of the party -- Lucas, Max, Mike, Eleven, Jonathan and Nancy.
It’s 10am by the time you all hit the road, ready for a night over at Tippecanoe.
Steve nudges your elbow.
You blink over at him.
“Radio?”
“Hit it, Harrington.”
