Psycho Analysis: Princess Azula
Tumblr media
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
This is one of those characters I should’ve done a long time ago, but just never got around to because I felt it was just way too obvious. I mean, come on, Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered one of the greatest works of western animation. Everyone and their mother has talked about this show at some point, so what could I even add?
Well, as it turns out, the way people talk about Azula is exactly what inspired me to write this! I have never seen a character so completely and critically misunderstood! Hell, this is a character that people like to disregard the core themes of the story to talk about! Discussion of her online made me so genuinely angry that I decided fuck it, it’s Azulain’ time! So here we go, my 200% anger-fueled analysis and review of the mentally-unstable Fire Nation princess who terrorized the Gaang!
Motivation/Goals: Azula has basically made it her life’s mission to be the ultimate tool of the Fire Nation, and specifically her father Fire Lord Ozai. To that end, she does basically whatveer he tells her to do? Kill the Avatar, conquer Ba Sing Se, take out her brother and uncle… So long as what she does has a net benefit for the imperialistic goals of her country, she’s down for it, and doubly so if she thinks it will get her even a little crumb of daddy’s attention.
Performance: Superstar voice actress Grey DeLisle of Literally Every Fucking Cartoon Ever Made fame lends her voice to the crown princess of the Fire Nation, and her smug, condescending delivery really sells Azula as a manipulative schemer who is constantly playing 4D chess to outmaneuver her opponents. I think I might even go so far as to call this one of DeLisle’s finest performances ever, for reasons pertaining to her delivery of lines in certain parts of the story that will be described below.
Final Fate: Azula’s fate is a perfect example of the show’s excellent writing because it robs us of catharsis in an extremely narratively satisfying way.
Throughout the finale, we watch as Azula’s mental health rapidly declines as literally everything in her life spirals out of her control for the first time. This is a girl who has defined herself as always being two steps ahead, always having everything firmly in her grasp, and yet her brother has run off with the heroes, her two best friends “betrayed” her, her father gives her the throne but only because he is crowning himself the Ultra Super Cool King Deluxe, and she is constantly grappling with feeling as if her mother viewed her as a monster while also subconsciously knowing that Ursa did truly love her. Keep in mind, all of this is happening to a teenage girl, so is it any wonder she completely and totally snaps?
Her final Agni Kai with Zuko during the height of Sozin’s Comet is epic, but it’s the conclusion where she is defeated by Katara and left as a sobbing, flailing mess that really knocks Azula’s character arc out of the park and cements her as the ultimate antithesis of Zuko. He had the guidance of a good, kind father figure, while she was stuck with Fire Hitler; he had a group of friends to love and support him, while she only had companions who put up with her out of fear and turned on her when they finally had enough; he was able to come to terms with his past traumas and grow to be better because of his numerous support systems, while all she had were toxic influences that led to her essentially collapsing under the weight of her internal conflict. She is what Zuko could have been if no one lent him a helping hand… and it is soul-crushingly tragic. The last we see her, she is a broken mess of a person, someone who has literally lost everything in their life, had the sole purpose of their existence stripped from them, and has just been reminded that she lost because she is a lonely, miserable, pathetic individual without any friends.
After her being on top for almost the entire show, this should feel like a triumph! But it’s not. It’s sad. It’s tragic. There’s no joy to be found. And boy oh boy, is it fucking powerful.
I’m just going to ignore what happens to her in the comics. It’s better that way.
Evilness: So here’s where things get really interesting, because while Azula does some truly evil things throughout the show, there is a tendency to exaggerate just how awful she is because most of her evil actions are just things she says she wants to do/has done. Combined with her smug, arrogant demeanor and it’s easy to believe she would do these things, but we don’t actually witness them. To wit, while she taunts Sokka about torturing Suki to the breaking point, when he finally reunites with her she sure doesn’t seem as cripplingly broken as Azula implied. I think it’s important to note that, as Azula is a massive liar, if we don’t actually see her do something (even something she’s threatening to do), it’s not really a mark against her. She’s a cunning manipulator, after all, conquering an entire city without lifting a finger.
On that note, though, she does have plenty of wicked moments under her belt. She conquered Ba Sing Se for the Fire Nation, she constantly tried to kill Aang and her brother while they were on the run in the Earth Kingdom, she had her friends locked up for defying her… Like she’s one messed up daddy’s girl. Even taking into account the inherent tragedy of her character and the fact she’s a teenage girl, she still kind of steps up to crossing the moral event horizon. She’s very much the product of grooming in an environment meant to espouse the joys of fascism and imperialism, and since she never had a strong guide like Iroh her moral compass is busted.
With all that being said, I think she’s a solid 5/10. She does some really nasty things, but at the same time a lot of what colors the perception of her is stuff she only implies. Also I’m not considering any of her pre-breakdown fights with Zuko as truly evil; this is just how siblings are. You bet your ass sibling squabbles would look just like that if they could shoot fireballs from their hands.
Best Episode: For all her badass moments, awesome schemes, incredible fights, and powerful moments… “The Beach” might be her best episode. This might sound crazy, but I stand by it; I think showing us an awkward, human side of her really helps to sell that Azula isn’t actually some unstoppable force. She’s just a teenager who has no social skills and can’t exist outside of the confines of being a royal or a warrior without looking like an absolute weirdo.
Best Quote: After outmaneuvering season 2’s arc villain Long Feng, who concedes to he rand says she’s beaten him at his own game, she flippantly replies, “Don't flatter yourself. You were never even a player.” I don’t think even Jet got so brutally murdered. It’s the sickest burn in the series aside from Zuko’s scar.
Final Thoughts & Score: The whole reason I even wrote this Psycho Analysis is because the constant and critical misunderstandings of Azula I see online constantly piss me the fuck off.
There is a subset of Avatar fans who completely and steadfastly believe that Azula is in fact an irredeemable monster, a complete sociopath with no redeeming qualities who needs to suffer and die. They reject any attempts at assessing the character in a more nuanced light, because “why can’t villains just be evil?” They treat her as if she’s some sort of pure evil being instead of an emotionally stunted child.“She’s crazy and she needs to go down” might as well be the mantra of these media illeterate Avatar fans, parroting opinions that mirror the words of Iroh after Azula almost killed him but ignoring that crucial context as well as Iroh’s entire character. Like, do these people actually pay attention to the core themes of the entire show? You know, mercy, redemption, humanity, the importance of all life? Did they miss the part of the finale where these core themes were cemented by Aang removing Ozai’s firebending with energybending, or were they too busy bitching about it being a deus ex machina to realize it’s thematically appropriate?
Like they want Azula to just be this evil, unredeemable cartoonish villain in a show that explicitly says no one is like this. There’s even a point in the final episodes where it’s pointed out that genocidal colonizer tyrant Ozai was once a sweet, cute little baby, and didn’t just spring forth as a fully formed Red-Hot Hitler. Azula is a person groomed by an unrepentantly evil father to be the Fire Nation ubermensch, the ideal tool for the conquest of the rest of the world. She was never allowed to have a normal childhood, as evident by her awkward behavior and social ineptitude when she’s actually allowed to cut loose and be around people her own age in a relaxed setting. Everything that she is—a liar, a manipulator, an attempted murderer, an egomaniac—are all the result of Ozai’s upbringing, being entrenched in the propaganda of her nation, and a lack of authority figures with a moral compass in her life. She didn’t have an Iroh to guide her, all she had was Ozai. In this sense, Azula is as much a victim as she is a victimizer.
But she is a victimizer. She is still consciously making bad decisions, she is still doing evil and sometimes appearing to enjoy it. There’s no reason to believe she couldn’t turn things around if given a helping hand like her brother was (though there would need to be a lot more effort due to her being in Ozai’s company unimpeded for way longer than Zuko), but she’s not some innocent little bean who’s being persecuted by others. Azula is still a villain, and viewing her as just a mere victim is a disservice to the character just as much as painting her as an inhuman monster. She is a very nuanced character, but she never gets the sort of POV work Zuko does to fully flesh out what’s on her mind and let us see the world through her eyes so the work done for her is more subtle, at least until her final breakdown. At that point, the show is literally beating you over the head with the fact she is an incredibly tragic character whose entire existence is pitiful and broken, and who lives as a mirror to Zuko, showing him a dark path he could have walked down if he didn’t receive love, support, and compassion.
Ultimately, Iroh wasn’t wrong when he said “She’s crazy and she needs to go down,” but I take it with emphasis on and. Azula is, in fact, crazy. She is incredibly mentally disturbed, her mind warped and molded by her father to the point she breaks if she starts to lose control even a tiny bit. And, as an antagonistic force working against the heroes, she does indeed need to go down. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy with his near-death experience, but you will not convince me that the sweet old Iroh, who himself changed and redeemed himself after being a fucking war criminal who nearly conquered Ba Sing Se, could not see the nuance in the Azula situation and genuinely saw his niece as some beast to be slaughtered.
But that’s enough with the ranting, let’s get to the actual final thoughts and score for Azula. She is one of the most engaging and magnificent villains in animation, a real firebrand (heh) whose numerous schemes are gripping to watch, building her up as someone you want to see finally get defeated only for the writers to pull the rug out from under you and remind you just what Azula really is. Avatar had no shortage of brilliant and subversive writing, but I think Azula’s ultimate arc is an unsung masterpiece among it. The character is so mired in discourse these days it’s easy to forget it, but she genuinely is a grand character.
For her score, I’m gonna say she gets a 9/10. She’s easily the best villain on the show, far outshining her rather generic father, the deliciously hammy but ultimately rather shallow Zhao, and the scheming but relatively minor Long Feng (to say nothing of the numerous minor villains that range in quality from wastes of time like Combustion Man to genuinely amazing and horrifying like Hama). I think the only thing holding her back from a perfect score is that sometimes it feels like things fall into place a little too perfectly for her, and she doesn’t face setbacks too much until the very end, but considering the immensely powerful culmination it’s nothing that ruins her. Azula is a character just as rich and deep as anyone else from the show, and I really wish more people looked at her with nuance.
I also wish the fucking comics didn’t exist. Maybe I’m asking for too much.

an au in which.. well different outfits that the ninja have had are actually just who they are
okay so i have much to explain so STRAP IN
so i came up with this idea really suddenly like ten million thoughts just hit me in the head, but the main concept is that
the world is actually a post apocalyptic style scenario, there's an "above" new ninjago city, that was built on top of the old overgrown and kind of abandoned old ninjago city (i imagine it having like glowy mushrooms and stuff and having some sort of a pretty factor to it)
i also see this whole world being full of like a multitude of different species with all sorts of wacky features (this is all kinda like years and years after the disaster that destroyed the og ninjago, so it has very cyberpunk-y and modern elements)
let's call it the (PA au. just post apocalyptic for short)
(this has been compared to that one show called arcane before. i. ive never watched arcane. /gen.. so yeah. i know its similar. its a coincidence. i promise. )
now, our characters consist of
kai - aka. the red shogun. (the outfit is prime empire kai, kind of combined with the red shogun outfit from season 4) a villain turned superhero vigilante, who's just doing his gosh darn best, and has a whole team who keeps his back safe! lloyd - aka. GB (prime empire lloyd) a trained mercenary and the leader of a gang that does everything from trading substances, weapons and machines in the black market, to simply bounty hunting. he's an untrustworthy, quiet but sly and feared leader, whos really just a sad and lost kid at heart. people say he takes after his father, but he wouldnt admit that. jay - aka. superstar rockin' jay!! (prime empire jay, ofc) he's a celebrity rockstar both in the above world AND in the undercity. though he mostly spends his time up above. he's still part of kai's vigilante team! nya- aka. THE FREAKIN SEA (seabound nya) she's a part of the sea that decided "fuck it!! we ball!!" and left to see what life on land is all about! she met kai and quickly became really close with him and they became siblings! shes the first member of his team! and she's kind of confused but she's DEFINITELY got the spirit! zane- aka. snake jaguar (the outfit from sons of garmadon) just like kai he's a vigilante, a wielder of ice. he goes undercover in lloyds gang and becomes his right hand man, but gives crucial information to his team, so they can take down lloyd's operation. cole- ROCKY FREAKIN DANGERBUFF, yet ANOTHER member of kai's team, he's from the dangerbuff clan! one of the groups of people who live their lives in the undercity. he's a dancer and a beast hunter, but also a kick ass hero just like the rest of the team! pixal- samurai x!! she's also a hero, that kind of rivals red shogun and kind of doesnt like him at all, but she does get kind of close to one of his team members... if you know what i mean
i will say that ALL the members of the squad still have their elemental powers, i havent yet properly fully thought that part out but i know for sure that they do.
SO YEAH. lloyd is actually kind of the villian for a large part of this au. i tried my best to not change his personality in a way that wouldnt be natural for his character to progress. in my head he grew up kind of sheltered from the outside world entirely. he's not really a... person? he's his role and thats that. he was never really loved by anyone therefore doesnt really know...emotion. all that well. he may act like a bratty teenager from time to time when he's taunting his enemies, but that's just... a character that he's playing up. he really just has no clue what hes doing.
(everything im not saying here is in the little notes i left on the drawings, though they may not be canon since i wrote down concepts and ideas there too)
his dad, garmadon, also is a little different in this au. basically "good" garmadon isnt really a thing (hes basically JUST the version from the oni trillogy). he was the previous gang leader BEFORE lloyd but he vanished and supposedly died. so lloyd had to take his place.
the ACTUAL. REAL VILLAIN of this au is harumi. who, fr. is still just herself. she's also kind of the second in command to lloyd. and she betrays him. and kind of takes the gang all to herself. leaving lloyd to help out the heroes...and finally find a family in the process.
its very emotional in my head and i am so scrambled right now these are the only semi-coherent thoughts.
i would LOVE to talk more about this au. if you have any questions or ideas or ANYTHING really.. do send asks about it... im in such deep brainrot for it and rambling on tumblr is apparently a thing that i do! (who wouldve thunk!)
this au was also made with the help of @shadesofvermillionvoid as USUAL.. so you can send asks there too!!! give kai all the love ever ash deserve it!!
... and to whoever bothered to read all this. wow. thank you! :D i feel very seen

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End #6 - The Hero of the Village
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenplay: Tomohiro Suzuki Storyboard/Episode Director: Tooru Iwazawa Chief Animation Director: Reiko Nagasawa Animation Directors: Keisuke Hiroe, Akiko Takase Key Animation: Mayuko Kandori, Ayaka Satou, Airi Takahashi, Dana Akahara, Hidekazu Ebina, Toshiya Kouno, Kohaku (Yutaka Nakamura), Kai Shibata, Hironori Tanaka, TOMATO, Keisuke Namioka, Ruoyu Wen, Tsutomu Miyazawa, Yukiko Busa, Eiji Yamamori, Rai, Keiichirou Watanabe, Hiroyuki Kobashi, Toshiyuki Satou, Yoshiko Matsumura, Shun Enokido, Chris (Yen bm), Mark Kenta Corcoran, Takahito Sakazume, Mami Takaishi, Youko Tsukada, Hiroo Nagano, HAHI, Houjicha, Saho Miyano, Shingo Yamashita, Tatsuya Yoshihara, Ruochen Liang
IT WAS SO GOOD, IT WAS SO GOOD..Uhh mhmm.
This week's Frieren episode was a showcase of the animators that the show continues to hold, top-tier level animators who you would typically see creating "sakuga" moments for just a few moments in a show. However, they are constant animators throughout the entirety of Frieren. And while you should have already been impressed, the Stark fight scene against the dragon truly showcased their talents.
An underrated role that people don't typically mention is the animation producer, who is mostly responsible for gathering the animators for a show. In this case, it's Yuuichirou Fukushi, who has been the animation producer for Sonny Boy, takt op.Destiny, One Punch Man, and more. The staff he assembles for his shows is simply top-notch almost every time, and I felt like I needed to mention that, especially when he is now responsible for two of my personal top shows, Frieren and Sonny Boy. Takashi Nakame is also listed as an animation producer for the show, but I don't know as much about him. Nevertheless, he should also be mentioned. In the Stark fight scene alone, you have Hironori Tanaka, Keiichirou Watanabe, Shingo Yamashita, Tatsuya Yoshihara, Chris (Yen bm), and Yutaka Nakamura. That's a team of multiple superstar animators that you wish one of them would be in your own show, but Frieren has all of them together, and the result is something you just have to see for yourself.
While I never really read Frieren's manga for its fight scenes, I was excited to see the action scenes in the animation. We did see it in the four-episode debut, but that was a more stationary wizard magic battle (which was still very cool). However, Stark vs. the dragon feels greatly enhanced compared to the manga. Just from the moment Stark runs to engage, the camera naturally follows him as he charges in, continuing to track him as if it were a boss fight in a video game. The fluidity and character acting amidst all of this action are phenomenal and it's all done in completely 2D including the backgrounds and dragons which is rarer nowadays.
The decision for a closer, more dynamic adaptation of the fight scene can be credited to Tooru Iwazawa, who is the action director for this episode. He also storyboarded and directed the entire episode.
Setting the action aside, I loved the episode as always. The attention to detail in translating the characters' expressions from the manga to the anime never ceases to amaze me. As someone who used to collect Fern's funny faces in the manga, I'm delighted to see all of them in their full glory. It's also heartwarming to witness the budding relationship between Fern and Stark in this episode.

OMG?????
y’all gotta read this @impulsivefanwriter wroTE SOME CABINET MAN AU STUFF I LOVEEEE IT AHHHHHHHHH IT’S SO GOOD i’m gonna talk about it more at the end but first read it bc oh my First Master all the writing is by them (which btw THANK YOU SO MUCH AHHH)
~~~~~
The SRJ Club [Beginnings of the Cabinet Man AU]
The club is absolutely roaring with noise, from music to hooting and yelling to the pounding of bodies in a wild dance. Lloyd covers his pointed ears and tucks in their tail, the tip already bruised from one laughing player swinging right over it.
What should reek of sweat, perfume, and fizzy pop drinks instead somehow smells of fresh rainfall and snappy mint. Bright lights strobe to the rhyme of the bouncing instruments, reflecting off clouds of grey and blue fog from the smoke machines positioned around the stage. Blue sparks crackle around the air without hurting players, one of the many quality-of-life perks of the game.
“Okay, team,” Nya has to raise her voice over the music to be heard, and Lloyd’s grateful she’s taken over for him— they can barely hear themselves think over all this noise. “Let’s keep on track. We’re here for information on the Keytan— KAI!”
Lloyd’s brother has already been swept away by the crowd, yanked into the taffy field of dancing players. Nya storms after him.
A strobe light flashes in Lloyd’s eyes and they hiss to himself, rubbing them. Cole leans down and nudges him, foot tapping to the beat. “Hey. You can lower the game volume in your settings.”
Blinking in surprise, Lloyd pulls up their player settings. Cole directs him to volume controls, and suddenly the bustling music club is more manageable for the teen(?) to handle.
They crack a small, fanged smile. “Thanks, Cole.”
Cole shoots him a two-fingered salute before going back to vibing to the beat.
Nya drags her dizzy brother back over. “Okay. As I was saying, we’re here for information on the Keytana only. Scott said there was an NPC we could get info from. We’re looking for someone called—“
Microphone tapping catches Lloyd’s ear, the tip twitching like a cat. They turn, squinting up at one of the elevated stages. On it stands one of the club NPCs, and at once, the music cuts to a deep, quiet backing track, the strobe lights dimming. The crowd simmers, attention trained to the stage.
“Are you ready for the star of the show?” the NPC shouts into the mic.
The crowd cheers. One player climbs onto the soda bar counter in wild excitement, others shooting blaster-like party poppers into the club’s ceiling.
The NPC on stage swings around the mic. “It’s time for the arrival of our hero, our inspiration, the reason for our very existence… Superstar Rockin’ Jay himself!”
If Lloyd thought the crowd was loud before, it simply erupts now. The four ninja are swept into the swarm, bodies jostling as everyone surges forward for a better view of the stage. Lloyd yanks their tail to one side before it can get squeezed in the dense mob, shying into the sides of his older brother and sister.
At once, all the lights in the club cut out, leaving them in the darkness of an outage. All noise quiets in an instant. Lloyd waits for confused whispers to break out, moments from voicing their own confusion, but the horde of players all seem to hold their breath in excitement, not panic. Lloyd tilts his head, fingers twitching with anticipation.
A blue spotlight bursts to life, then a second, and a third, all pointed at one spot on the stage. The fog machines chug to life, pouring more fog around the shining stage. With a hiss, a trapdoor opens and a platform rises up.
Standing on the platform is an NPC with a glowing blue and yellow electric guitar. The spotlights reflect off glowing yellow markings on a dark blue top, open to reveal a light blue chest with glittering top surgery scars and small darker triangle patterns up one side. A white belt, tied like a ninja’s gi, hangs around his waist, the ends flapping over glowing blue rings on his pants. Heeled yellow boots tap the stage, echoing over the quiet club.
Bright orange eyes open in a jagged mask-like marking of darker blue skin with freckles, and fluffy white hair sweeps over them. Pointed ears twitch, catching the faint track of music. When the NPC grins, wide and bright, fangs glint in his mouth.
“HEY PLAYERS!” He calls, voice amplified like a microphone by the game as he snaps his fingers with the glimmer of blue sparks. “ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?”
“YEAH!” The crowd screams back.
The NPC turns his head, cupping a hand dramatically around his pointed ear as he holds the guitar neck higher with his other hand. “I couldn’t hear that. ARE YOU READY TO SUPER ROCK?”
“YEAH!!!” The crowd screams back louder.
With a pose as striking as lightning, the NPC pulls his arm over his head, poised over his guitar. “ARE YOU READY TO SUPERSTAR ROCK?!”
If this guy asks one more time, Lloyd’s sure he’s going to lose it.
The mob of players already have, breaking into wordless cheers that blend into a single untuned noise. The breakneck energy and hype in the room is choking, electrified.
With a wild cheer of his own, the NPC strikes the first chord of his guitar, and the performance begins.
So this is their NPC informant:
Superstar Rocking Jay.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SO HOLY CRAP I’M STILL IN SHOCK HGJKFDSHJGKDFKJ
I love how overstimulated Lloyd is depicted here, that definitely fits with my HC for how he’d be acting rn (that’s why he’s not really the one to engage with Jay in the comic, Cole is) and the way Jay hypes the crowd up!!!! So good!!! The descriptions of the club are so nice, I’m still trying to plan out exactly what the club’s gonna look like (we don’t see much of it in the actual show which is TRAGIC) but I love the idea that because of the game it’s a completely pleasant place to be in, eliminating many of the cons of going to a club in real life
thank you thank you thank you i love this so much :DDD

'Magnificent.
Christopher Nolan’s three-hour historical biopic “Oppenheimer” is a gorgeously photographed, brilliantly acted, masterfully edited and thoroughly engrossing epic that instantly takes its place among the finest films of this decade — an old-fashioned yet cutting-edge work that should resonate with film scholars and popcorn-toting mainstream movie lovers for years and decades to come.
At the risk of sounding like Nicole Kidman: This is why we still go to the cinema, to settle into our seats and slip into the darkness when the lights go down, to immerse ourselves in visual and aural storytelling at its finest. From the moment the closing credits begin to roll, we’re already looking forward to the next time we see “Oppenheimer.”
And the next.
Adapted by Nolan from the book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Martin Sherwin and Kai Bird, “Oppenheimer” is a sprawling story that hops along the timeline and introduces so many characters I’ll admit I wouldn’t have minded some title cards introducing them as they come and go. Nolan, however, opts to plunge us into events in sometimes chaotic fashion and invites us to hold on for the ride, mirroring the thrilling and yet terrifying and politically charged atmosphere of the world of physics in the early and mid-20th century, when some of the brightest scientific minds in history were making discoveries and advancements that would change the world forever — and possibly end the world as we know it.
With frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy delivering subtly powerful work as Oppenheimer and an astonishingly deep supporting cast led by Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh (with more than a dozen additional huge talents popping in for a scene or two), “Oppenheimer” is a massively ambitious undertaking, with Nolan (“Inception,” “Dunkirk”) further solidifying his standing as one of the dominant filmmakers of his generation.
Writer-director Nolan tells much of the story in the context of the complicated and eventually contentious relationship between Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss (Downey), the naval officer and politician and self-styled amateur physicist who was in awe of Oppenheimer’s intellect but came to resent him for his hubris and his politics.
When Strauss welcomes Oppenheimer at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1947 to offer him the directorship of the Institute, Oppenheimer is a world-famous war hero known as the father of the atomic bomb, and Strauss is practically a fanboy. By the 1950s, everything had changed, as we see in two primary framing devices that Nolan returns to again and again: the 1954 Atomic Energy Personnel Security Board hearings to determine whether Oppenheimer would retain his security clearance, which were held in secret in a claustrophobic conference room; and the 1959 Senate floor hearings on President Eisenhower’s appointment of Strauss to Secretary of Commerce, which became something of a public spectacle, as Strauss found himself at peril of becoming the first Cabinet appointee rejected by the Senate in decades. (Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema deftly toggle back and forth between vibrant color and stunning black-and-white to depict the different eras.)
“Oppenheimer” marvels at the titular subject’s incredible mind, with Nolan depicting Oppy’s genius through subtle notes such as the plinking of raindrops in a pond, and ferocious tones, as when we see Oppenheimer pinned awake in his bed at night, terrified by his visions. As Oppenheimer becomes a superstar in the world of physics and rubs shoulders with the likes of Albert Einstein (Tom Conti), Ernest Lawrence (Josh Brolin), Niels Bohr (Kenneth Branagh) and Edward Teller (Benny Safdie), he’s borderline reckless in his personal life, whether he’s attending Communist Party USA meetings (his brother was a party member, as were several close friends) or engaging in multiple affairs, most notably his longtime entanglement with the troubled and volatile Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh).
When Oppenheimer marries Katherine “Kitty” Puening (Emily Blunt), his life becomes even more complicated, with Kitty experiencing post-partum depression and becoming an alcoholic. Just because you’re a genius doesn’t mean you’re immune from coming home to a wailing child and a wife who is sitting in the dark with a bottle. In 1942, Manhattan Projector director Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) appoints Oppenheimer to head the secret weapons lab, and they literally build a town in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to house the collection of scientists and support staff and their families. In one of the most impressively staged sequences you’ll ever see, Nolan re-creates the world’s first nuclear explosion at the site known as Trinity in July of 1945. The teeth-rattling power of the explosion, the symphony of orange in the sky, the reactions of a number of key players as they look on in wonder, the expert use of sound (and in some frames, the lack thereof) — it all adds up to a stunning achievement in filmmaking. And in the midst of it all, we see how Oppenheimer is equal parts thrilled and horrified by what has been wrought.
“Oppenheimer” is a great war movie without a single scene of war. It is neither a hagiography nor an indictment of Oppenheimer, as it celebrates his genius and his achievements, while never shying away from his vulnerabilities and failings. This is a film deserving of double-digit Oscar nominations, from best picture to best director to a number of technical categories to the performances of Murphy, Blunt, Downey, Damon and Pugh. It is the best movie of the year so far and one of the best films of the 21st century.'

Sholygeong
Meaning ‘Simple Designs’ in Enite, though very often referred to as ‘Shonseygeong, meaning ‘Designed by an Idiot’, so you know we’re in for a wild ride with this one, even before we tell you this particular company was banished from the entire multi-universal expanse of the Noctrian Empire.
The Sholygeong Corporation was created in Noctrian Year AM.17.11A by Kai-Soon Anrai, Daughter superstar engineer Habishi Oori-Nai Anrai, head of the Noctrian Empire’s Science and Development branch succeeding global hero Milo Sol-Tuth. By all accounts, Habishi Oori-Nai was a worthy successor to her forebears, and her daughter Kai-Soon was set to carry on the torch. But those keen in Enite may note the distinct lack of the Habishi honorific before young Kai-Soon’s name. While Kai-Soon was a genius in her own right, surpassing her mother in many regards, Noctrian Parliamentary law dictated that no descendants of sitting Parliament members could hold an official position for two generations, knocking Kai-Soon out of the running. As such, the young engineer refocused her efforts to the private sector, starting a development firm outside the boundaries of the Empire, and got to work designing new weapons and equipment for the growing Noctrian Armed Forces. At the time, her staunch nationalistic attitude and dismissive remarks towards other species were a celebrated standard in the Noctrian Empire- though looking back through the lens of the horrific conflict such an attitude wrought, it is unsurprising what would be discovered.
Sholygeong weapons were hailed as a brilliant blend of luxury design, and ruthless efficiency. Boasting not just the highest quality Energy cells and Plasma projectors on the market, but also their signature ‘Du-Sun’ firing mode, allowing the user to swap between different secondary elemental effects. It would in fact be this notoriety that would be the company’s downfall. During the Noctrian invasion of the Krorback Populace on Senrai-4, soldiers on the field began to notice enemy combatants armed with what looked to be Noctrian equipment. After reporting officers sent the weapons back to their commanders, it was discovered these weapons were Sholygeong prototypes! After this discovery, an investigation found several dozen enemy factions had also been supplied with such equipment across multiple universes.
Yes, as it turns out, Kai-Soon had been using enemy factions as beta testers for new weapon designs- supplying them with untested, highly dangerous first-generation weapons, and pinning them against Noctrian soldiers using her old designs. This was not done with sympathy for enemy factions, nor as a sabotage attempt- but rather a convenient way to get field research on test subjects whose deaths would carry no weight, and who were already expected to be killing Noctrian soldiers.
After this revelation, Kai-Soon and the entirety of the Sholygeong corporation were banished to Übersatz, where she has since found a brand new group of unwilling test monkeys to experiment on.. You! Without the boundaries of galactic safety standards, Sholygeong now produces powerful, but highly unstable weapons, to be distributed among the many warring factions of the Galaxy. So pick up a Sholygeoing weapon, say your prayers, and pull that trigger!

FAN EXPO Chicago Celebrates 50 Years Of All Things Fandom With The World’s Greatest Comic Creators
Tumblr media
Fifty years ago, fandom was changed forever when Nostalgia ‘72 took over the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont Illinois, creating the first space in the midwest for fans to gather and celebrate comics. Now known as FAN EXPO Chicago, the convention will return for its biggest show yet - bringing an incredible round-up of legendary celebrities, comic creators, voice actors and cosplayers to the Windy City from July 7 to July 10.
To celebrate the golden anniversary, FAN EXPO Chicago has assembled an incredible roster of superstar comic artists and writers, headlined by legends Brian Michael Bendis (writer, creator of “Naomi”), Geoff Johns (writer, creator of “Stargirl”), Joe Quesada (CCO, Marvel Entertainment) Greg Capullo (“Batman”), Marc Silvestri (celebrating 30 years of Image Comics), Kevin Smith (“Daredevil”), Leinil Francis Yu (“X-Men”), Jorge Molina (“Batman”) and dozens of others.
In 1972, Chicago collectibles dealer and local school teacher Nancy Warner made history when she united 2,000 of Chicago’s biggest comic fans in the midwest’s first ever comic and collectibles convention. Beginning as a space by and for comic collectors, and expanding to include exhibits, attractions and celebrities from all walks of fandom, what is now known as FAN EXPO Chicago is gearing up for its biggest year ever - while paying homage to the traditional comic culture that started it all.
“While the phrase ‘comic con’ continues to grow in popularity with convention groups throughout the world, it sometimes feels like those groups have left the actual comics in the dust,” said Andrew Moyes, vice president of FAN EXPO HQ. “Fandom culture is more than just blockbuster movies - it’s a deep loyalty to and appreciation of the classics and a celebration of the everlasting impact those comics, characters and creators have had on each of us. At FAN EXPO Chicago, we’re working to take the fan experience to new levels, while also staying true to the root of who we - and our guests - are.”
Other standout creators attending include Zeb Wells (“Amazing Spider-Man"), Jock (“Batman: One Dark Knight”), Steve McNiven (“Star Wars”), Jose Luis Garcia Lopez (legendary artist, “Batman vs Hulk”), Dike Ruan (“Shang-Chi”), Michael Golden (legendary artist, "Batman,” “Daredevil”), David Mack (“Kabuki,” “Jessica Jones”, Ben Templesmith (“Wormwood,” “30 Days of Night” and Tony Harris (“Starman,” Ex Machina”). See the full creator list and keep an eye out for more additions at https://fanexpohq.com/fanexpochicago/comic-creators/.
Comic fans will particularly revel in the special Comic Guest VIP packages just announced featuring Heroes in the Windy City, Jock, Silvestri, McNiven and more. See the full list at https://fanexpohq.com/fanexpochicago/comic-guest-special-event-packages.
In addition, superstar celebrities will reunite, including “the Hobbits” of the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd), Stargirl’s Brec Bassinger, The Book Of Boba Fett’s Ming-Na Wen and stars from The Mandalorian, Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks, Cobra Kai, Star Trek, as well as a stacked roster of voice actors includes Futurama’s Billy West, Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Ashley Eckstein and the hottest leads from My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer. With additional guests and attractions representing dozens of the greatest franchises across genres and decades, the massive lineup will create the ultimate playground for fans of comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, gaming and more.
FAN EXPO Chicago will host attractions for fans of all ages and fandoms, including panels, autograph sessions, photo-ops and meet-and-greets and retailers and artists from all over the world selling unique merchandise, artwork, memorabilia, comic books and collectables. Exclusives for FAN EXPO Chicago include DC Batman #251 Special Chicago Edition, 50th Fan Expo Chicago exclusive/limited edition: bag, t-shirt, pin and many others.
FAN EXPO Chicago will take place from July 7 until July 10 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The show will be open from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets start at $22 and can be purchased at www.fanexpohq.com/fanexpochicago/buy-tickets/. For more information and to stay up-to-date on new guests and attractions, visit www.fanexpohq.com/fanexpochicago.

So I've been thinking about what Pokemon each of the ninja would be. Here's my take:
Cole: Golurk
Typing: Ground/Ghost
Reason: It's been stated in many of Golurk's dex entries how it was created by ancient people to protect villages and stuff. That goes so well with Cole and his motto of "Stand up to those who are cruel and unjust".
Tumblr media
(I named my shiny Hisuian Arcanine Cole, but if I had thought about it I would of hunted for a shiny Golurk and named him Cole before Legends. Oh well)
Nya: Palafin
Typing: Water
Reason: Palafin is known as the "Hero of the Sea". It changes into its "Hero Form" when it hears a cry for help. I feel this sits very well for Nya. Given that, she changed her form to be one with the sea to save her friends from Wojira.
Tumblr media
(I do have a shiny Palafin but it's male so I can't name him Nya :( )
Kai: Incineroar
Typing: Fire/Fighting
Reason: Incineroar is known to have a selfish disposition. Kai was definitely selfish in the earlier seasons. But, ultimately, Incineroar is known to help out smaller Pokemon. Just like how Kai took care of Nya when they were younger.
Tumblr media
(I named my shiny Cinderace Kai, but named my shiny Incineroar after his dad; Ray)
Jay: Regieleki
Typing: Electric
Reason: I was thinking of picking Low Key Form Toxtricity as its design fits very well with SuperStar Rickin' Jay! But I needed to think broader than Prime Empire. Yes, Regieleki is legendary, and I haven't picked a legendary for the others, but it is stated to be strong enough to power all of Galar on its own. Jay has been shown to be very powerful when he puts the peddle to the meddle with his Elemental Power- like when he recharged the batteries of the sub in Seabound.
Tumblr media
(I named my shiny Hisuian Samurott Jay tho, but I only did that bc I had named my Unovian Samurott on my replay of White 2 Jay)
Zane: Weavile
Typing: Dark/Ice
Reason: Weavile are known to be highly intelligent- as is Zane. A lot of fans noticed how Zane changed after the Ice Emperor incent. Like a piece of the IE is still with him; the Dark type fits perfectly for that! But honestly, I picked Weavile bc it's shiny form is PONK!
Tumblr media
(My shiny Weavile in Pokemon Scarlet is named Zane!)
Morro: Decidueye
Typing: Grass/Ghost
Reason: Come on, Decidueye is the BEST Pokemon to represent Morro! It starts off as Grass/Flying. Grass=green aka green ninja. Flying= Element of Air. Then it loses its Flying typing for Ghost! PERFECT!
Tumblr media
(yes my shiny Decidueye is named Morro)
Lloyd: Hisuian Decidueye
Typing: Grass/Fighting
Reason: Okay, I kinda picked this Pokemon due to Morro lol. It does still fit Lloyd imo. H. Deciueye is from an older era like how the Green Ninja prophecy is from like....thousands of years ago.
Tumblr media
(and my shiny H/ Deciueye is named Lloyd)

bonko no honko I ran out of good jokes a long time agodemia (bnha)(if I ever had any) s3e1-3
(I forgot about the prequel minisodes but I'm already here, maybe I'll watch them later idk)
ooh this OP's got a pi-aner in it. I dig it. some of the opening bits sort of reminded me of homest - why is bakugo swole wtaf
Tumblr media
(void teleport business slenderfrend watching all might on tv) patrick star: I hate this channel -- why IS slendervoid so fucking dapper tho
"worst character? worst-character-in-training?"
…"Vlad" has orc fangs instead of vamp fangs : \ huh
there's that "be a fuck[bleep]ng superstar" thing again. it's so jarring every time -- (going down the list of all of Class A's quirks) …like, yes, we do know all these things already, and it is recycled footage, but I'm not finding that I mind it -- I knew they weren't gonna do the same for Class B's but. I mean. idk
"you said you were gonna use the pool for endurance training, right?" already hovering finger over the right arrow key -- breaking news: anime school has girl's swimsuits that are actual clothes. granted, figures it'd only be for a joke
guy with literal jet engines in his legs: hey, who wants to do a race? -- oh come on, none of you are even touching the water -- iida you fuck 'XD I thought you were the rules guy
(flashback) the bit where deku says "you haven't put a single scratch on me yet" when all of his fingers are broken and todoroki is at full health is still fucking hilarious tbh -- (still flashbacks) "I am the younger brother of a hero you attacked" also still reminds me of that "do you have ANY IDEA how little that narrows it down" meme -- yes, yes, you're all protagonists, this is a recap episode huh
"don't hold back on me, half n half!" "okay" freezes bakugo and deku and wins easily -- (eraserhead butts in) hehehehehehehe -- ("pool's closed, go home") aw dammit, I wanted him to make them do the last race legit 'XD
…has this show been doing these Marvel-ass after-credits scenes this whole time? …well, hopefully it doesn't mean I've been missing any needed context when I didn't watch the credits all the way through

Los Angeles Football Club: 2022 MLS Cup Champions
Tumblr media
LOS ANGELES – A Hollywood screenwriter couldn’t have dreamed up MLS Cup 2022 any better.
LAFC are top of the league, emerging as first-time champions from Saturday’s epic championship match at Banc of California Stadium, beating the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw for the ages – and also making the hosts the first team to complete a Cup-Supporters’ Shield double since Toronto FC in 2017.
Gareth Bale’s thunderous 128th-minute equalizing header sent the game into penalty kicks, showing exactly why the Black & Gold signed the superstar forward this summer as he left Real Madrid. That canceled out a possible man-of-the-match performance from Philly center back Jack Elliott, whose first equalizer booked extra frames, and then his go-ahead 124th-minute strike pushed the Union on the verge of victory.
But Bale came up huge with the final whistle nearing, and back-up goalkeeper John McCarthy took the hero’s cape in the PK shootout by saving two Union efforts – from Jose Martinez and Kai Wagner – after Daniel Gazdag missed the Eastern Conference champions’ first attempt.
LAFC first got scores from Denis Bouanga and Ryan Hollingshead in PKs, then Ilie Sanchez’s game-winner from the spot sealed a 3-0 advantage for the Black & Gold from 12 yards out. From there, celebrations ensued for the Western Conference champions before their 3252 supporters' section – all in a final that pitted the league’s top two teams against each other for the first time since 2003.
But the storyline, among many, might be McCarthy. He was subbed on in the 117th minute after LAFC’s starting goalkeeper, Maxime Crepeau was shown a red card when a Video Review decision reduced the hosts to 10 men. Crepeau also got hurt on the play, suffering a serious-looking leg injury after colliding with Philly forward Cory Burke following an under-hit back-pass; referee Ismail Elfath originally brandished a yellow card that was later upgraded.
All that drama was just during extra time and PKs, as the game reached a new level as it reached each passing period. LAFC midfielder Kellyn Acosta (deflected free kick) and defender Jesus Murillo (corner-kick header) each scored during regulation time, and the Union equalized each time via Gazdag (near-range shot) and Elliott (free-kick header) to make it 2-2.
From there, the Tinseltown effect took over – Elliott’s almost-winner, Bale’s towering header and McCarthy’s PK heroics – to cap an MLS Cup final that can only be called legendary.
Goals 28' - LAFC - Kellyn Acosta 59' - PHI - Daniel Gazdag 83' - LAFC - Jesus Murillo 85' - PHI - Jack Elliott 120'+4' - PIH - Jack Elliott 120'+8' - LAFC - Gareth Bale

"POP WAS THE KING OF NEW YORK, NOW I'M THE ONE IN CHARGE"
"POP WAS THE KING OF NEW YORK, NOW I'M THE ONE IN CHARGE"
February 18, 2022
The King of New York is one of the most controversial titles in hip hop. Even Nas once said “There's more shit than wanting to be this King of New York shit”. However its still one of the most coveted titles in hip hop because New York was once the mecca of hip hop (which we all know is Atlanta now). There has been many kings of NY, including but not limited to: B.I.G., Hov, 50, just to name a few but for a while that title went void and almost became meaningless. With Atlanta currently having their foot, hand, and Draco on the rap game’s neck, New York didn’t have a true hometown hero they could rally behind for the masses because most NY artists had to keep up with the modern sound to stay relevant.
I.YOU CANNOT SAY POP AND FORGET THE SMOKE!
Then came along the Canarsie MC, POP SMOKE. Pop had all the makings of a superstar and was clearly getting ready to be the undisputed king of NY Hip Hop due to being a pioneer of Brooklyn Drill + His aura that was reminiscent of Get Rich or Die Tryin’ 50. When Pop met his untimely demise it felt like once again the King of NY seat would be empty for a while. Lil TJay snuck in some hits, Kay Flock is leading the charge in the Bronx, but are they King of NY material? Who knows beloved. But there is one name that had the potential to take the throne and that is frequent Pop Smoke collaborator and fellow Brooklynite, Fivio Foreign.
II.VIRAL
Fivio may have seem like another notch on the belt which is drill rap but then he got the biggest feature on the critically acclaimed, DONDA album by Kanye West. The track “Off the Grid” which also features Playboi Carti, gives Fivio Foreign the most blatant headstart for a musical run, since 2chainz on “Mercy”. Once the beat switches to the signature Drill slider synth, Fivi goes off for probably 32+ bars of simple but effective lyrics.
That Fivi verse on Off the Grid put him on a whole new radar, next thing you know features everywhere! Also, most of the songs are being tailored to him so he can give that same crushing flow from ”Off the Grid”. Once he dropped “City of Gods” w/ Alicia Keys & Ye, he officially made his claim for the throne,
“Pop was the king of New York, Now I’m the n***** in charge”.
Ok! we all know you have to say it first before we believe it right?! So once he said that he officially placed himself under extreme scrutiny. At this point, we know Fivi is the best doing drill rap right now but what would he have to do to take that King of NY title? A Lot!! He has to have people wanna emulate him, his presence has to be everywhere, but most imporantly that first album has to be a classic!!!
Beyond this point is where I acquired new info for the article after its original written date.
III.B.I.B.L.E. TALK
Fivio Foreign dropped his debut studio album, B.I.B.L.E., April 8, 2022. Let me be the first to say the album is……NOT a classic. It starts off cool and he tries to step out on certain songs but it just don’t capture you like it should. Its definitely a strong debut I would say because he can only go up from here but now we have to ask, can he go up from here? Was “Off the Grid” just a moment? B.I.B.L.E. was apparently executive produced by Kanye but is it or me is it hard to see his(Ye) input on this? With all the hype around the album it felt like we should’ve been given way more.
While Fivi’s debut wasn’t bad its not a undisputed instant classic that it should’ve been for a person who claims to be “King of New York”. The throne is still up for grabs in my humble opinion. Who is worthy of it though? Will it be another new young up and comer or will Fivi make me eat my words and take the necessary steps to become the king he wants to be?
