Hop's story is not necessarily about him being some useless garb Pokémon trainer. But rather being a Pokémon Trainer, as a profession, has never been his thing and just what he pursued out of desperation to be loved. That he won't live up to Leon and that's okay, because his true passion lies with Pokémon themselves. That being a professor is something that suits him much better. He's not pathetic and weak, he's just not as strong as you or Leon, he's not a trainer, and that's fine!

ok this question is genuine and well intentioned so pls be nice to me .. people tend to get mad at me when I say that I prefer Hop over Hau-

and okay hear me out, gen 7 is my favorite gen; but I thought that Hop had a much more complete arc than Hau did. Hop felt like a developed character who changed and grew throughout the game, I was invested in how he'd end up and I was legitimately concerned for him during parts of the game. Hau (in comparison to Hop but also to an extent Lillie, and even Gladion (and it's not a 'these two characters overshadowed him' either, because Hop and Bede both got excellent development separately)) didn't seem to change much throughout the game.

and sure, he was set up for struggle, his grand dad being a Kahuna is a big thing to live up to just like how Hop struggled to follow Leon's footsteps in being the champion but to be totally honest Hop felt like a do over for Hau. Hau felt static because he didn't seem to actually struggle with the comparison- at least not like Hop did; the kid had a breakdown and cycled through his pokemon team to try and beat the protagonist, I don't remember Hau having anything even remotely like that. And even if they both started with the blanket characterisation of "nice rival", Hop felt like he matured but maintained his good attitude while Hau didn't change at all.

am I missing something? I genuinely want to like Hau, and I don't dislike him! but I don't understand why people prefer him to Hop.
