re: character opinions bingo! i know you're a huge star trek fan but the only character i remember is tom paris from voyager; my family was convinced i had a crush on him as a kid so i want to know your thoughts on this random character from my childhood
Character Opinion Bingo
Tumblr media
Tom is like. my second favorite Voyager character, first being his bestie Harry Kim.
I love his personality and character arc over the show and into the comics and no one cares about how good of a dad he is in the Star Trek (2022) comic. Just look at this picture of him and Miral and Harry. Good fucking dad flying the ship with his baby daughter strapped to his chest.
Tumblr media
He just enjoys Earth history and flying ships!! He's a nerd even if he comes off as Crew's Cool Guy(tm) and I love him for that so much.
Tommy P your daddy issues are so valid I know you have issues with your dad and it's really funny but the fact that they cast two different guys as "Admiral Paris" is so not beating the gay dads allegation. Bisexual king Tom Paris and his two awful dads fr. I love you Tom.
Also his lizard babies. That's all I'm gonna say on that lol.

yknow what im gonna do like i did for Melody and do a ramble post or two about Charlie cause shes beloved gay idiot
Tumblr media
Charlie and Melody my beloved girls Courtesy of the lovely @kiwikinq
So Charlie is older than Jim, she's 19 at the start of the series and already neck deep in the mystical world of magic and mayhem. She works at the Italian restaurant with Douxie and is a member of Ash Dispersal Pattern, Douxie and Zoe are some of her best friends and probably her only friends thanks to her chaotic and trouble-magnet energy. She's already got quite the police record and is an avid fan of destroying things, so bashing magical monsters with Douxie and Zoe during the night is perfect for her.
there's a one shot i think i posted somewhere of Charlie's first meeting with Douxie, but they literally met while he was fighting a big lizard monster and she tried to run it over with her beat up car. So of course she decides he's stuck with her from here on and it's history from there.
She was a baseball player as a kid and has a small collection of bats in her room, but her most treasured bat and weapon of choice in Thunder
Tumblr media
(courtesy of friend @eraberry)
A pretty solid bat on it's own, but she's done some.... reconstruction on it. She's carved all kinds of stuff on the thing but she also cored it and shoved a solid metal tube in it so it's especially heavy. Not field legal and... probably not legal legal either, but it sure does a great job cracking down on monsters!
And your eyes don't deceive you! There is a magical rune carved on there too! Because she's got no natural magic, she convinces Douxie and Zoe to give her a rune to make her bat a magical weapon! It basically wreathes her bat in a magical fire which will come back to bite her later.
She's taking college classes online in the evening and spends her nights out with her crew. She's the current bass guitarist for Ash Dispersal Pattern and is HUGELY in love with her besties.
Tumblr media
Courtesy of @drax-is-inthefandom beloved friend
She's actually worse at cooking than Barbara is because instead of things simply burning or tasting wrong, Charlie sets things on fire. Not on purpose but she does know the Captain of the local Fire department very well now. She jokes this means Lake Ladies are cursed and they may very well be but that hasn't stopped her yet, much to her brother's chagrin.
She's a coffee-holic. She knows the menu of every coffee house in town and always orders wild stuff with lots of add ins and is ok at making coffee at home, though she cant make as complex stuff as she orders. She's also always sure to tip well especially because half the baristas in town are magic users who she knows through Douxie and Zoe or through her own nonsense and Momma didnt raise no cheapskate.
She's technically punk aesthetic-ed but her trademark is literally a flannel because i almost made her country girl coded. But hse does have a leather jacket she's sewn patches into and saves for special occasions cause its her special jacket.
She and Douxie both have a bunch of jingly things on them: bracelets, zippers, earrings, etc; so whenever they're together, they jingle jangle like you've got a jar of coins and its especially funny cuz Charlie has def got ADHD or something so she bounces and doesn't sit still like ever so she's constantly making some kind of sound.
So in a TOA world where Charlie exists, she finds out about the Trollhunter thing pretty early on, either because she's home the day he finds the amulet or because they run into each other while he's out doing Trollhunter things while she's out doing monster hunting things with Douxie and Zoe. And she can't lie to their mother to save her life either because she's bad at lying or because she hates the idea of lying to their mom.
uhh additonal rant post in the future thats a little more coherent of charlie storyline

I was curious, are you in any fandoms? Or in general like a thing a lot.
oooohkay so. I'm not in any fandoms really, I don't watch online media enough to really say I'm in a fandom
HOWEVER
I am a HUGE science nerd. Especially about biology. I am constantly researching animals and their behavior especially with ocean animals and reptiles. I also really love insects. I'm planning to have a reptile/insect keeping room one day because I love them so much. I have literally told my girlfriend I rather have a blue tegu than a dog. I don't really like furry things all that much if I'm being honest, I relate a lot more to the types of animals people claim are unable to love. Like yeah they probably don't get the burst of oxycotin that humans get about things, but getting a lizard or snake to trust you enough to be held without pitching a fit is amazing!! They're demonized so much in media and I adore them. My main special interest is also sharks so take that for what you will. I relate a little too much to animals that people make out to be "evil".
I also have a big interest in psychology. My brain is ten different levels of fucked so I kinda like doing research into how brains normally function or hell, even how my brain functions. Like the fact that people with schizophrenia are (I think) 80% more likely to experience insomnia than the average person! I just thought I was bad at sleeping but no there's a reason for it! But I'm also a big fan about the science behind human sexuality. I won't get too into the facts of it cuz a lot of it is NSFW, but looking a the science behind getting it on and how it affects the brain and how fetishes and kinks form, ITS SO COOL. I also collect vintage erotica and gay porn because of this gkjdkjlkfldkgl.
I also just generally have a big love for queer history, learning about the aids crisis and the struggles that our community has faced but also just the fact that we've ALWAYS been here... It makes me feel less alone.
And like the last main thing I'm into is spirituality type stuff. I'm actually a certified pagan priest irl, but my disabilities and life circumstances have made me need to take a really big step back from the work I've been doing. But I've always fueled my work in this with the fact I have seen SO MANY people do it the wrong way, that I want to be a guiding force in doing it the right way.
Besides that, I'm really big into the punk anarchist scene, I like the vulture culture community on tumblr here and have a few specimens myself, I build legos and models a lot, I like art (obviously), I'm learning how to do leather, metal, and wood working, and also building costumes or restoring old clothes/shoes. I like music and singing a lot now that my voice has dropped from testosterone, I play Minecraft and the Sims a lot in my free time, I'm not big on video games but I'm trying to get into TF2 again. I'm getting pretty good at the Pokemon Trading Card Game, as well as Magic the Gathering (Magic is much slower than Pokemon TCG if I'm being honest, that game is complicated.)
To be honest most of what I watch on youtube is documentaries, food reviews, and reddit videos, haven't found any youtubers I'm particularly into. Honestly, I spend most of my time scrolling through tumblr and listening to rock music because I'm two weeks away from finally getting to go home after getting stuck in Texas for seven months and I'm kinda stuck in wait mode. Hopefully once I'm back in Chicago, I'll be doing a lot more hobby wise. I might even share some of it here if I get my old camera back.
But yeah, that was a big old ramble, I know it's weird for me to be on the fandom website and not be in any fandoms but it honestly takes a LOT for me to get into series of any kind. 100% of the series or fandoms I'm "into" it just cuz I have an alter from their source. Either way I hope this accurately answered your question! I appreciate being sent stuff a lot!

What Amber Thinks of the Side Characters :
Idea taken from @kitsune-oji && @choccopom
Diavolo
He was technically the first ever demon I met face to face before the brothers! Honestly speaking, he scared me a little but he was actually pretty sweet and reminds me of a lost puppy or dog at least. He was pretty nice to let me go back to the human world for a bit before starting up my exchange program here cause I was on my way to submit something so yeah. I actually like his presence and I know he'll make a great King!
Did I mention he reminds me of a lost puppy?
Barbatos
Not gonna lie he scares me sometimes with his time powers and stuff! Also I think he has a torture room? I heard nothing pleasant happens there so yeah I am not gonna question him about it any further! I see him as very calm and collected and always gets the job done with no flaws but I think he too needs rest sometimes and a day off from work. Even Diavolo agrees with me on this. He's kinda like a father figure of sorts to me.
I wonder what made him scared of rats tho-
Simeon
He's an angel? It's pretty obvious on that since he's literally an Angel but he's actually a nice father/brother figure to Luke. Sadly, he doesn't know how to use Technology properly so I would have to help him out sometimes with Luke. He seems pretty happy and has a smile on his face which is probably brighter than the sun but he said I have a much brighter smile? Thanks Simeon you're very nice!
I never seen him mad but Diavolo said he's scary when mad? Now I am curious-
Luke
Baby boy!! I actually found him adorable and sweet. Though I don't get why some of the brothers call him a 'chihuahua'. I mean I know he doesn't like demons and doesn't like me being with them but I can assure him that they aren't bad as people say. We get along well and I help him bake stuff like cakes, cookies, cupcakes and anything he wants to try. He's like a little brother figure to me!
The fact that he's never going to admit that he loves Barbatos' presence is funny enough-
Solomon
Shady Mcshady? Honestly he's a grandpa at this rate. Though I am practically his apprentice and he's weirdly annoying and mysterious is something I am gonna have to get used to and the fact that I am talking to a man from the bible is cool enough. He can be annoying sometimes but I guess he's neat. Also yeah that's my nickname for him in case you're wondering!
I am honestly surprised that he had many wives but no children like not even one like how-??
Thirteen
Definition of me having a huge Gay Panic moment the minute I saw her. She's very pretty and nice to me! I honestly didn't think reapers like her existed! Though we're practically besties and she's pretty chill to hang out with as well. Definition of Girlboss and someone no person can mess with and I like that!
Stop saying she looks like a lizard-
Raphael
He looked like the type who was pretty quiet and I was like half right about it since he doesn't really show much enthusiasm or anything so I decided to tone myself down so I don't make him overwhelmed or anything. Simeon and Luke talks nice things about him so he's practically okay in my book. I don't know much about him but it doesn't hurt getting to know him more.
I thought he was mammon's twin for like a half a minute-
Mephistopheles
Another demon I don't know much about. But I remember that he was banned from the RAD's school Newspaper because he made the princess Diavolo stickers and whatnot. Kinda funny actually. he also doesn't like Lucifer from what he told me. Not a fan of angels either but he makes an exception for Luke so he's fine to me. Doesn't hurt getting to know him as well!
His hair color reminds me of an eggplant tbh-

Media: Good Omens
Year/my age: 2007/17 and 2019/29
What drew me to the media:
So! This one is so funny because GO is my spring board to fandoms in both major arcs (or whatever) of my experience as a reader and then as a writer. When I was 17, just getting into college, I read Good Omens. As a kid with a tremendous amount of baggage from going to catholic school for most of my life, it was ground breaking for me to read.
Most of you probably know how the story goes, at least tangentially. An angel and a demon thwart the apocalypse. Their relationship is really special, and it was the first time I spent any time reading something categorized as queer. I was mostly there trying to laugh about my experiences with Catholicism, but I got this heaping spoonful of yummy ✨gay possibilities✨ too.
Still, at 17, I wasn't ready for that! I think I searched for fanfiction of them together, but then quickly backed out of the scene. This was probably before I even starting reading Vegebul fanfics, so I was very baby about it. I categorized gay fanfiction as something not for me, an asexual, repressed, repulsed, depressed, heterosexual girl. LOLS
Years later, as a 29 year old, I was really excited to watch the tv show. At this point, I'd already shed my embarrassment around reading fanfic smut (lols Reylo! We'll get to this one later) and even dabbled in smut writing/publishing myself (God, spiderpool, we'll get to this one later too), so I was more open to the possibility.
What made me a fan:
I'm not sure. Something snapped in me both times, but the second snap was much more dramatic. I was writing smut on my goddamn office computer, in my fucking cubicle. Insane. Absolutely mental.
It was like I was a child again, pushing barbie doll faces together. While writing, you really are a fucking god, highest among high. You can create anything. Often that impulse is almost crippling overwhelming, so you can't touch it. It stews in you miserably. Whereas fanfiction offers you restrictions that sharpen and focus creativity in a profound way.
But what made me a fan? British (terror called me a britophile the other day, and my eye twitched, but I don't think I can deny it)? Well written? Funny!? But it probably comes down to the characters. I guess my blorbo of the pair is probably Crowley. Me and my heretic lizard men. My crew. My family.
Crowley is so relatable. You know, and my family life was fine. I couldn't actually pinpoint why I felt caste out from society. By 22, I knew I was nonbinary and had come out to some folks, so at 29, I was on the bandwagon for queer subtext and feeling it touch me.
But most importantly, this shit got me into writing! Like actually sitting down, putting words on paper, and not being able to stop. For that, I'm eternally grateful.
Have I written fanfiction for it?
Yes! I wrote three stories for it (one has been cast into the orphaned fire) with another incomplete. My favorite of the three is definitely the weirdest, Ouroboros Forever and One. I like having fun with stuff, and I hope the trend continues. I'd rather write the weird stuff that I love than the stuff that gets hungrily devoured by the masses.
Why or why not:
I was in a frenzy. The first one came out and I was like "never again, I'm done" LOLS.
My first story was insanely popular (by my standards, not the fandom's per say) and it remains my most kudos'd work, which I'm strangely annoyed about.
Why? Well, my other work is better! Or at least, its gotten better. I have no reason to be annoyed about it perhaps. The Good Omens fandom is huge and thirsty, so it makes sense that it gets read and enjoyed to this day. But maybe writers are inherently a little peeved about success as well as failure. You can't please me. I can only please myself and I say I have better work.
I want to take one second to brag that the unfinished story featured a giant Crowley fucking a black hole. I'm disappointed I never got that story finished. Aw shucks. WIP RIP
Opinion on the fandom:
Giant! Overwhelming! If you can come up with a scenario (sexual, au, situational, historical) its been written about and probably much better than you could ever attempt. It's also a very old fandom that remains active. The book was written in 1990. The show was 2019, and Good Omens 2 is coming out this year??? Insanity!
I joined a discord for GO and was steamrolled. I did a big bang where I made some images for a Cyberpunk AU. It was all fun, but I got so mentally and physically drained trying to keep up with the talent, the popularity contest, and attempting to feel original while dealing with my insecurity as a new writer. I had to drop out.
I'm glad I did too. After I left the fandom, there was a huge backlash on the cast. God I think it was because Michael Sheen had a girlfriend in her twenties or something. Twitter was finding all kinds of reasons to hate fanfic writers or the show or Neil Gaiman of all people. I feel like GO was the start of some exceptionally bad blood that pops up in these giant fandoms around queer stuff. WWDITS has a bit of it, but OFMD takes the fucking cake.
Would I read it again:
No. I'm still really spent on it. I sometimes catch fanart for Good Omens and it's really really difficult to generate an emotion for it whatsoever. The well is dry so they say. Perhaps after GO2, my fire will return, so check back later, I guess.

please tell me every bit of ds9 drama
oh theres simply too much to cover in one post, so i will limit myself to spreading the legend of Andrew Robinson's fan fiction
So; it's the mid 90's and known character actor Andrew Robinson was just cast as Garak on Deep Space Nine: a one off character, intended to have a single episode in season one. Cut to 1999 its the final season of the show and Garak gets a special send off as a fan favorite recurring character in the shows final moments. How did that happen? Well, the short answer is: Andrew Robinson is bonkers and I'm obsessed with him.
Okay so in order to frame this, you have to know that Andy Robinson? is an ActOUR okay? he is like a well and true, trained classical performer and as such, he would often approach roles (regardless of size) with complete conviction. Garak was no different. He practiced a technique that a lot of older actors would use. Andy wrote a journal from the perspective of Garak to get a feel for the character before he even APPEARED on the show! Andy literally wrote over 200 words of extremely detailed backstory for Garak. Again, NOBODY ASKED HIM TO DO THIS. BUT he showed up to the DS9 writers room with this CHARACTER BIBLE of his gay lizard OC and said "hey i wrote all of this about this one off character that you tricked me into playing because I originally auditioned for Odo, didn't get it, and pressured me with money to appear as Garak (story for another time)," and it was all SO GOOD and the writers loved it so much that they literally couldnt help but keep him on the show. (also, clearly, the writers loved his performance and audiences loved the character, so there was a lot of support of keeping him on the show but really: its all because Andy put his whole ass into this show LMAOO)
Garak's backstory as written by Andy was hugely influential in how his character would later be developed and tons of ideas that Andy wrote about became real canon for the character; and he later expanded the bible into a longer story which would be published in 2000 in the novel "A Stitch in Time."
BUT THIS ISN'T THE END OF ANDY'S WRITING! as the show continued and Garak's popularity grew, Andy became a super popular guest at cons. Clearly a talented writer, Andy would (in his free time) write one shots of Garak's pre DS9 life and inner thoughts on the station, and READ THEM ALOUD AT CONS! While I can't vouch to any of these stories being explicitly Garak/Bashir romantic in nature (though if you attended any of these cons and have more info, please share it) Andrew's writing became a thing of legend. In fact, he and Siddig (who is a gem) actually cowrote a play called "The Dream Box" about Garak and Bashir that they would act out at cons! INSANE! (needless to say, this was less than thrilling to the infamously homophobic producer of 90's trek, Rick Berman who was vocally against Garashir and didn't like Andy very much at all)
In a truly incredible move, Andy and Sid's regard for fan fic was again shown this past year when the two of them teamed up to perform two fics over zoom, vocally supporting fandom creators and reiterating their love of Garashir as a ship.

Not Up For Interpretation - An Essay On Nonbinary - Erasure
(Trigger Warning: Misgendering, Transphobia, Nonbinary-phobia)
If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know this was a long time coming. I’ve made several posts about my frustrations concerning this topic and how much it hurt me just how socially accepted erasing an entire identity still is. While representation marches on and things have become better for nonbinary people as a whole, we still battle with a lot of prejudice - both intentional and unintentional.
In this essay, I want to discuss just how our identities are being erased almost daily, why that is harmful and hurtful and what we all can do to change that.
Chapters:
What does Non-binary mean?
Nonbinary- representation in media
So what’s the problem?
How do we fix it?
1. What Does Non-binary Mean?
Non-binary is actually an umbrella term. It includes pretty much every gender-identity that’s neither one or the other so to speak, for example, agender.
Agender means feeling detachment from the gender spectrum in general. If you’re agender, you most likely feel a distance to the concept of gender as a whole, that it doesn’t define you as a person.
There are many identities that classify under non-binary: There’s gender-fluid (you feel you have a gender, but it’s not one gender specifically and can change), demi-gender (identifying as a gender partially, but not completely) and many others.
Sometimes, multiple non-binary identities can mix and match.
Most non-binary people use they/them pronouns, but like with so many things, it varies.
Some nonbinary-people (like me) go by two pairs of pronouns. I go by both she/her and they/them, because it’s what feels most comfortable at the moment. But who knows, maybe in the future I’ll switch to they/them exclusively or expand to he/him.
There is no one defining non-binary experience. Nb-people are just as varied and different as binary people, who go by one specific gender.
There are non-binary people who choose to go solely by she/her or he/him and that’s okay too. It doesn’t make them any more or less non-binary and their identity is still valid.
If your head’s buzzing a bit by now: That’s okay. It’s a complicated topic and no one expects you to understand all of it in one chapter of one essay.
Just know this: If a person identifies as non-binary, you should respect their decision and use the pronouns they go with.
It’s extremely hurtful to refer to someone who already told you that they use they/them pronouns with she/her or he/him, or use they/them to refer to a person who uses she/her.
Think about it like using a trans-person’s deadname: It’s rude, it’s harmful and it shows complete disrespect for the person.
Non-binary people have existed for a very long time. The concept isn’t new. The idea that there are only two genders, with every other identity being an aberration to the norm, is largely a western idea, spread through colonialism.
The Native American people use “Two-Spirit” to describe someone who identifies neither as a man nor a woman. The term itself is relatively new, but the concept of a third gender is deeply rooted in many Native American cultures.
(Author’s Note: If you are not Native American, please do not use it. That’s cultural appropriation.)
In India, the existence of a third gender has always been acknowledged and there are many terms specifically for people who don’t identify with the gender that was assigned to them at birth.
If you’re interested in learning more about non-binary history and non-binary identities around the world, I’d recommend visiting these websites:
https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/History_of_nonbinary_gender

https://www.teenvogue.com/story/gender-variance-around-the-world
Also, maybe consider giving this book a try:
Nonbinary Gender Identities: History, Culture, Resources by Charlie Mcnabb
2. Non-binary Representation In Media
The representation of non-binary people in mainstream media hasn’t been... great, to put it mildly.
Representation, as we all know, is important.
Not only does it give minorities a chance to see themselves in media and feel heard and acknowledged. It also normalizes them.
For example, seeing a black Disney-princess was a huge deal for many black little girls, because they could finally say there was someone there who looked like them. They could see that being white wasn’t a necessity to be a Disney princess.
Seeing a canonically LGBT+ character in a children’s show teaches kids that love is love, no matter what gender you’re attracted to. At the same time, older LGBT+ viewers will see themselves validated and heard in a movie that features on-screen LGBT+ heroes.
There’s been some huge steps in the right direction in the last few years representation-wise.
Not only do we have more LGBT+ protagonists and characters in general, we’ve also begun to question and call out harmful or bigoted portrayals of the community in media, such as “Bury Your Gays” or the “Depraved Homosexual”.
With that being said: Let’s take a look at how Non-binary representation holds up in comparison, shall we?
Tumblr media
This is Double Trouble, from the children’s show “She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power”.
They identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns. They’re also  a slimy, duplicitous lizard-person who can change their shape at will.
Um, yeah.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Did I mention they’re also the only non-binary character in the entire show? And that they’re working with a genocidal dictator in most of the episodes they’re in?
Yikes.
Let’s look at another example.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These three (in order of appearance) are Stevonnie, Smoky Quartz and Shep. Three characters appearing in the kid’s show “Steven Universe” and it’s epilogue series “Steven Universe: Future”.
All of them identify as non-binary and use they/them as pronouns.
Stevonnie and Smoky Quartz are the result of a boy and a girl being fused together through weird alien magic.
Shep is a regular human, but they only appeared in one episode. In an epilogue series that only hardcore fans actually watched.
Well, I mean...
One out of three isn’t that bad, right?
Maybe we should pick an example from a series for older viewers.
Tumblr media
Say hello to Doppelganger, a non-binary superhuman who goes by they/them, from the Amazon-series “The Boys”.
They’re working for a corrupt superhero-agency and use their power of shape-shifting to trick people who pose a threat to said agency into having sex with them. And then blackmail those people with footage of said sex.
....
Do I even need to say it?
If you’ve paid attention during the listing of these examples, you might have noticed a theme.
Namely that characters canonically identifying as non-binary are either
supernatural in some way, shape or form,
barely have a presence in the piece of media they’re in,
both.
Blink-and-you-miss-it-manner of representation aside, the majority of these characters fall squarely under what we call “Othering”.
“Othering” describes the practice of portraying minorities as supernatural creatures or otherwise inhuman. Or to say it bluntly: As “The Other”.
“Othering” is a pretty heinous method. Not only does it portray minorities as inherently abnormal and “different in a bad way”. It also goes directly against what representation is actually for: Normalizing.
As a general rule of thumb: If your piece of media has humans in it, but the only representation of non-white, non-straight people are explicitly inhuman... yeah, that’s bad.
So is there absolutely no positive representation for us out there?
Not quite.
As rare as human non-binary characters in media are to find, they do exist.
Tumblr media
Here we have Bloodhound! A non-binary human hunter who uses they/them pronouns, from the game “Apex Legends”.
It’s been confirmed by the devs and the voice actress that they’re non-binary.
Nice!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are Frisk (bottom) and Chara (top) from the game “Undertale”. While their exact gender identity hasn’t been disclosed, they both canonically use they/them pronouns, so it’s somewhere on the non-binary spectrum.
Two human children who act as the protagonist (Frisk) and antagonist (Chara), depending on how you play the game. (Interpretations vary on the antagonist/protagonist-thing, to say the least.)
Cool!
......
And, yep, that’s it.
As my little demonstration here showed, non-binary representation in media is rare. Good non-binary representation is even rarer.
Which is why those small examples of genuinely good representation are so important to the Non-binary community!
It’s hard enough to have to prove you exist. It’s even harder to prove your existence is not abnormal or unnatural.
If you’d like to further educate yourself on representation, it’s impact on society and why it matters, perhaps take a second to read through these articles:

3. So What’s The Problem?
The problem, as is the case with so many things in the world, is prejudice.
Actually, that’s not true.
There’s not a problem, there are multiple problems. And their names are prejudice, ignorance and bigotry.
Remember how I said human non-binary representation is rare?
Yeah, very often media-fans don’t help.
Let’s take for example, the aforementioned Frisk and Chara from “Undertale”.
Despite the game explicitly using they/them to refer to both characters multiple times, the majority of players somehow got it into their heads that Frisk’s and Chara’s gender was “up for interpretation”.
There is a huge amount of fan art straight-up misgendering both characters and portraying them as binary and using only he/him or she/her pronouns.
The most egregious examples are two massively popular fan-animated web shows: “Glitchtale”, by Camila Cuevas and “Underverse” by Jael Peñaloza.
Both series are very beloved by the Undertale-fanbase and even outside of it. Meaning for many people, those two shows might be their first introduction to “Undertale” and it’s two non-binary human characters.
Take a wild guess what both Camila and Jael did with Frisk and Chara.
Underverse, X-Tale IV:
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “Frisk lied to me in the worst possible way... I... I will never forgive him.”)
Underverse, X-Tale V:
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “I-It’s Chara... and it’s a BOY.”)
Glitchtale, My Promise:
Tumblr media
(Transcript: (Referring to Frisk) “I’m not scared of an angry boy anymore.”)
Glitchtale, Game Over Part 1:
Tumblr media
(Transcript: (Referring to Chara) “It’s ok little boy.”)
This... this isn’t okay.
Not only do both of these pieces of fan-art misgender two non-binary characters, the creators knew beforehand that Frisk and Chara use they/them-pronouns, but made the conscious choice to ignore that.
To be fair, in a video discussing “Underverse”, Jael said that only X-Tale Frisk and Chara, the characters you see in the Underverse-examples above, are male, while the characters Frisk and Chara from the main game remained non-binary and used they/them (time-stamp 10:34).
Still, that doesn’t erase the fact that Jael made up alternate versions of two non-binary characters specifically to turn them male. Or that, while addressing the issue, Jael was incredibly dismissive and even mocked the people who felt hurt by her turning two non-binary characters male. Jael also went on to make a fairly non-binary-phobic joke in the video, in which she equated gender identities beyond male and female to identifying as an object.
Jael (translated): “I don’t care if people say the original Frisk and Chara are male, female, helicopters, chairs, dogs or cats, buildings, clouds...”
That’s actually a very common joke among transphobes, if not to say the transphobe-joke:
“Oh, you identify as X? Well then I identify as an attack helicopter!”
If you’re trans, chances are you’ve heard this one, or a variation of it, a million times before.
I certainly have.
I didn’t laugh then and I’m not laughing now.
(Author’s note: I might be angry at both of them for what they did, but I do not, under any circumstances, support the harassment of creators. If you’re thinking about sending either Jael or Camila hate-mail - don’t. It won’t help.)
Jael’s reaction is sadly common in the Undertale fandom. Anyone speaking up against Chara’s and Frisk’s identity being erased is immediately bludgeoned with the “up for interpretation”-argument, despite that not once being the case in the game.
And even with people who do it right and portray Frisk and Chara as they/them, you’ll have dozens of commenters swarming the work with sentences among the lines of “Oh but I think Frisk is a boy/girl! And Chara is a girl/boy!”
By the way, this kind of thing only happens to Frisk and Chara.
Every other character in “Undertale” is referred to and portrayed with their proper pronouns of she/her or he/him.
But not the characters who go by they/them.
Their gender is “up for interpretation”.
Because obviously, their identity couldn’t possibly be canonically non-binary.
Sadly, Frisk and Chara are not alone in this.
Remember Bloodhound?
And how I said they’d been confirmed as non-binary and using they/them pronouns by both the creators and the voice actress?
It seems for many players, that too translated to “up for interpretation”.
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “does it matter what they call him? He, her, it, they toaster oven, it doesn’t matter”)
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “I’m like 90 % sure Bloodhound is a dude because he could just sound like a girl and by their age that I’m assuming looks around 10-12 because I’ve known many males who have sounded like a female when they were younger”)
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “I don’t care it will always be a He. F*ck that non-binary bullsh*t.”)
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “Bloodhound is clearly female.”)
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “I’m not calling a video game character they/them”)
Tumblr media
(Transcript: “exactly. The face was never fully shown neither was the gender so I’d say it means that the player is Bloodhound. So it’s your gender and you refer to “him” as yourself. It’s like a self insertion in my eyes.”)
So, let me get this straight:
If a character, even a player character, uses she/her or he/him, you can accept it, no questions asked.
But when a character uses they/them, suddenly their identity and gender are “up for interpretation”?
This attitude is also widely prevalent in real life.
Many languages only include pronouns for men and women, with no third option available. Non-binary people are often forced to make up their own terms, because their language doesn’t provide one.
Non-binary people often don’t fit within other people’s ideas of gender, so they get excluded altogether. Worse, non-binary people are often the victims of misgendering, denial of their identity or even straight-up violence when coming out.
People will often tell us that we look like a certain gender, so we should only use one set of gendered pronouns. Never mind that that’s not what we want. Never mind that that’s not who we are.
Non-binary people are also largely omitted from legal documentation and studies. We cannot identify as non-binary at our workplace, because using they/them pronouns is considered “unprofessional”. We don’t have our own bathrooms like men and women do. Our gender is seen as less valid than male and female, so even that basic thing is denied to us. I’ve had to use the women’s restroom my entire life, because if I go into a male restroom, I’ll be yelled at or made fun off or simply get told I took the wrong door. It’s extremely uncomfortable for me and I wish I didn’t have to do it.
And since non-binary people aren’t seen as “real transgender-people”, we often don’t receive the medical care we need. This often renders us unable to feel good within our bodies, because the treatment and help we get is wildly inadequate.
It’s especially horrible for intersex people (people who are born with sex characteristics that don’t fit solely into the male/female category) who are often forced to change their bodies to fit within the male/female gender binary.
And you better believe each of those problems is increased ten-fold for non-binary people of color.
We are ignored and dismissed as “confused”, because of who we are.
Representation is a way for Non-binary people to show the world they exist, that they’re here and that they too have stories to tell.
But how can we, when every character that represents us is either othered, barely there or gets taken away from us?
We are not “up for interpretation”.
Neither are the characters in media who share our identity.
And it’s time to stop pretending we ever were.

4. How Do We Fix It?
Well, first things first: Stop acting like we don’t exist.
And kindly stop other people from doing it too.
We are a part of the LGBT+ community and we deserve to be acknowledged, no matter what our pronouns are.
Address non-binary people with the right pronouns. Don’t argue with them about their identity, don’t comment on how much you think they look like a boy or a girl. Just accept them and be respectful.
If a non-binary person tells you they have two sets of pronouns, for example he/him and they/them, don’t just use one set of pronouns. That can come off as disingenuous. Alternate between the pronouns, don’t leave one or the other out. It’ll probably be hard at first, but if you keep it up, you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.
If you’re witnessing someone harass a non-binary person over their identity, step in and help them.
And please, don’t partake in non-binary erasure in media fandoms.
Don’t misgender non-binary characters, don’t “speculate” on what you think their gender might be. You already know their gender and it’s non-binary. It costs exactly 0 $ to be a decent human being and accept that.
Support Non-Binary people by educating yourself about them and helping to normalize and integrate their identity.
In fact, here’s a list of petitions, organizations and articles who will help you do just that:

Tl:DR: Non-Binary representation is important. Non-Binary people still suffer from society at large not acknowledging our existence and forcing us to conform. Don’t be part of that problem by taking away what little representation we have. Educate yourself and do better instead. We deserve to be seen and heard.

*pounding fists on table* Gush about those next Gen OCs! I wanna know!
Mmmmm, ok, I only have a few sketched out though.
I drew them all at 18, but their ages are different from each other.
Here's a bit of character info with them too.
Siblings:
Tumblr media
First we have Jullia (12 years older than Sky) (I've talked about her before in a different AU), she's the oldest of the bunch, and sort of the tallest at 6" 0. She's a toughy, loves burgers, and studies law. She's also kind of a flirt, but after starting her relationship with Lilith, she is more serious about making sure she's happy. At her height, and build, she prides herself on always being at the top of her game and loves to work out and train with her Aunts.
Tumblr media
Then we have Sora (Sky) (6 years older then Noitte). Little gay chaotic boy who likes fashion and playing dumb. Kind of a whore but rocks it, doesn't really date but likes to taste off the menu. Protective older sibling who likes to pick on his little brother for being a nerd even though he's secretly (not so secretly) one himself. He loves his dads, loves drama, and often gets into trouble along with his cousin. Between everyone in the family, his best friend is June.
Tumblr media
After him we have Noitte (basically the baby of the family). He loves Astronomy, and spends his time building anything that can give him a better glimpse at the sky and what's beyond. He has almost every astronomy book ever, and loves si-fi, especially old movies of them. He's a prodigy and loves spending time with his uncle and making all sorts of inventions with him. He says he tolerates most of his family, but he genuinely loves all of them. Him and Fermin vibe the best.
---
Tumblr media
We have Lilith, an only child (one year younger than Jullia). Her dad left her mom when she was 3, and her mother remarried when she was 8. Her new dad was always a big role model in her life and, personality wise, seems to take after him more than she does her mom, and she couldn't be happier with him in her life, and thankful since he was to one who gave her a push to ask out her crush, Jullia. (It didn't work, but it still went great). She loves skirts and and flowers and has the softest spot for lizards, especially her pet Leopard Gecko: Chunky.
-
Tumblr media
Than Marisabelle, or Mariposa like her mom calls her (she's 3 years older then Sora). She owns about 30 different shoes and loves running. She's the track and field star from her schools. She's also the belle of all her circles, but she can go from the sweetest angel to the scariest person in the room. She's responsible but loves a good thrill of danger. She's the biggest horror and thriller fan, and loves gothic buildings and architecture. (She secretly owns a Ouija board somewhere in her room, but her parents can't seem to find it.) She loves hanging with her moms, and her older cousin Jullia.
-
Tumblr media
June is the embodiment of chaos. A bit punk, a bit rock, all nerd, and not afraid to throw down at any time (she's the same age as Sora, but 2 moths older still treats him as if he's a little kid). She's a ride or die in almost any situation, and loves to gamble. Her motto with her bff is "I hustle the money, you hustle the men". She adores back to the future and got her mom to make her a hoverboard. Her bff is obviously Sky.
-
Tumblr media
Fermin is a bit calmer than his sister, but has just as much sass as her. (He's June's adoptive brother, and the same age as Noitte). He likes video games, correcting people, and programming, but has a huge passion for writing and books. He has journals covering almost every inch of his room, so his dad had to make him a shelf (it didn't help, but it was worth a try). He likes talking with his mom about most anything and likes to steal sweaters and sweatpants from his family. He's done with most anyone and is mostly lively around his mom, or dad, and loves to info dump about Mary Shelley, and Shakespeare, and Neil Gaiman, and all his favourite writers to whomever is willing to listen, usually his mom, or cousin Noitte, seeing as he can also talk for hours about the ever extending universe.
--------------------------------
That's it for now, though I do have a few more that I need to draw, but I still need to figure out their designs and such.
Thank you for the ask ☮️

Every 3rd question :)
3. daydreams - if you could be anything or anyone, who would you be?
Hmm… I suppose being a cat who didn’t understand capitalism would be pretty great. Or maybe a lizard, just no thoughts, only food
6. ivory - describe your pajamas?
Comfy t-shirt and underwear — I actively hate wearing any sort of pants to bed
9. twilight - best friend?
My girl Christina! I met her in college but it feels like I’ve known her forever, and we’re the epitome of “dumber together.” We’re well aware that we shouldn’t be allowed to wander the streets together but we do it anyways, and I love it and wouldn’t give it up for anything
12. dimples - most attractive features of a person’s face?
Ooh that’s hard, I’m a bit of a romantic… but I think their smile, just the way someone’s entire face can light up, the sparkle in their eye as they laugh and smile at something they enjoy, I think that’s the most attractive feature
15. whisper - how much sleep do you get?
Usually about 8 hours a night, I tend to get overtired if I get too much sleep
18. honey - favorite term of endearment?
why’d you ask all the hard questions lmao ummm… I love any and all sort of pet names, but I think it’s tied with ‘darling’ or ‘my love’, those just melt me every time
21. paper - favorite children’s book?
There’s a series called Hank the Cowdog that my dad read to me all the time when I was little, and it still holds a special place in my heart. He found a book this summer and read it again and I’m still just as fond of it as I was
24. backyard - did you ever have an imaginary friend?
I don’t remember any of them, but my mom says I did. She’s also convinced they were ghosts or spirits I could see
27. nightlight - do you read before bed?
When I’m not in school I do! But that can be dangerous lol because if it’s a good book I’ll be up until 2am reading
30. aphrodite - favorite actress/actor?
Currently, Eve Best hands down
33. sheets - sanrio or san-x characters?
After looking these up I’m gonna say Sanrio characters, I love that little egg yolk guy
36. sapphos - favorite poet?
Not very gay of me but I’ve never been a huge fan of poetry, actually. However I think I just haven’t been exposed to the right stuff, you know? The American public education system is notorious for wringing any life and joy out of literature arts, so if anyone has any recommendations, I’ll gladly take them! I really do want to like poetry
39. sweetheart - favorite mug/cup?
This mug that my aunt gave me, it’s made by a local potter. It’s a beautiful, teal-ish blue color, and on top of the handle is a little bird figurine, so I call it my bird mug!

(Same anon with the musicals)
IM SO EXCITED okay so some I think are really good and also not so well known—
1. Lizzie
-It’s based on the infamous Borden murders.
-The music is very rock (it’s marketed as a rock musical so yea)
-it’s gay
-trigger warning for sexual abuse
2. Lizard Boy
-Honestly the best way I can describe this is that a gay lizard uses Grindr for the first time and it has disastrous results
-the music is all really fun though
-it’s like a superhero origin story which is cool
3. Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
-this one was on Broadway
-it’s based on a part of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
-it’s about a girl who has a fiancé but he’s fighting in a war, and she’s really young and naïve and thinks she’s fallen in love with someone else (there’s more going on but that’s the main conflict (also they call Pierre an old man, but he’s not really he just acts old so people make fun of him))
-it’s sung all the way through so you get the full story by listening to it
-trigger warning for emotional abuse
4. Bonnie and Clyde
-was also on Broadway but not for very long, not many people know it
-it’s about Bonnie and Clyde
-the music is so amazing maybe the best I’ve ever listened to in a musical
-tw for sexual assault (it’s kinda glossed over though)
5. Waitress
-this ones a little more well known but I love it
-a woman who makes really great pies finds out she’s pregnant with her abusive husband’s baby and starts saving up money so she can leave him. And she has an affair with her gynecologist
-tw for emotional abuse and kinda physical abuse (it’s only in the dialogue though)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I haven’t heard all of these, and I’m a huge fan of the ones I have!!! Thank you babyyyyy I can’t wait to listen!!! 😄💕

opinion on DT? ik Noelle is nb and iirc at 3 of the writers are, but they've been called nbphobic rep?
yeah i got thoughts. putting them under a cut bc this is gonna be long
so, first off, dt isn’t nbphobic rep. that’s a dumb take. noelle is nb and has talked specifically about why dt reflects their experience with gender in this interview. to quote:
...we introduced the character of Double Trouble, who is a reptilian shapeshifter, which I love because I think my own gender is a shapeshifter. I always relate to the shapeshifter characters, they're in everything that I do. We got a lot of feedback from fans who were really really hungry for a human, nonbinary character. It is so interesting because I think when your gender doesn't conform, you tend to feel like an outsider in ways that I always related to aliens, monsters and robots. That's how those emotions represented themselves to me: to explore those through a shapeshifter, someone who has absolute control over their presentation to the world at all times, I found that was my absolute dream.
it’s just stupid to look at a nb character designed by a nb person to reflect their own identity and call it transphobic. you’d be more or less saying that their identity and experiences are transphobic, which is dumb as hell.
i think that some people take issue with dt as nb representation because they don’t relate to them. like, i don’t identify as nonbinary, i identify as genderqueer, but i don’t really relate to dt at all, except in one specific aspect that i’ll touch on in a bit. the gender fluidity and androgyny that they portray is not a universal nb experience. personally i’m firmly and comfortably masculine. lots of nb people don’t want to meet any standard of androgyny, and lots of nb people aren’t genderfluid, so it makes sense that they wouldn’t relate to a shapeshifting character. that’s fine. but i think some of those people are angry that the nb rep in the show doesn’t match their experiences, and are making stupid accusations as a response.
i’ve seen a number of different criticisms of dt as nb rep; the ones i tend to see a lot are that the only nb character in the show shouldn’t have been amoral, and that it sends a bad message to have a trans character ‘tricking’ other characters with their gender presentation.
as far as the first point goes, i think it’s somewhat of a valid criticism, but i suspect it’s an issue because of whatever corporate execs refused to sign off on gay people for four seasons. i imagine noelle had to fight really hard to get one (1) nb character onscreen. i doubt they could’ve gotten more than that. as far as the choice to make them amoral goes, i don’t think dt as an amoral character frames gender nonconformance as wrong or evil simply by being sort of evil and nb. they’re a bad guy, sure, but you spend a lot of time in spop rooting for bad guys. catra is a bad guy for like 85% of the show. scorpia is a bad guy for a good few seasons, and it’s kind of impossible to not root for her. i personally find dt to be a kind of charming character. dt’s gender nonconformance isn’t visually threatening or disgusting. even their lizard form is nonthreatening—a little weird, but not, like, ooh scary trans person. i don’t think it sends a message to the viewer that being gnc is bad.
as far as dt ‘tricking’ other characters with their gender: this is a criticism i’m personally torn on, because as a trans person, tricking cis people is, like, my second favorite hobby. that looks different for me than it does for dt, since i’m male-passing and i just like outing myself to watch cis people’s brains melt as they realize they can’t always clock a trans person, but i really like doing it. for me, my gender does kind of feel like a big trick i’m playing on the world sometimes, and i enjoy that feeling. but i also understand why having a nb character be a shapeshifting spy could be upsetting to people who don’t share that feeling with me. i think that the problem here is, again, the lack of nb rep in general. not just on spop, but in pretty much all mainstream media. there are nb people who relate to dt’s trickery, and a lot of nb people who don’t, and the issue is that there aren’t other nb characters that reflect those other nb experiences.
i think the most fair criticism that can be levied is that there should’ve been more nb characters on the show, reflecting more aspects of nb experiences. that same criticism can be levied at every single show that’s ever been made, pretty much, and it should be directed at executives and producers who decide what shows get made and how diverse they get to be. there are a huge number of ways in which someone can be nb, and until there’s enough space in the media to tell all of those stories—shapeshifting trickery, androgyny or a lack thereof—there’s always going to be someone who feels hurt when they don’t relate to a character meant to represent them.
basically, dt is not nbphobic rep. i understand how people reach that conclusion, but it’s a really fucking stupid conclusion to reach.

Your top 5 emojis (I think I know number 1 already) and your top 5 animals, please 💖
Can I be bad and say I next to never use emojis? I never really have but I’ll try!
1. 🌹 the rose!! Very specifically my baby I get on my Samsung tablet. Isn't she pretty? All other rose emojis pale in comparison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. 💙 I like the hearts but blue heart is the one I gravitate to. Its just prettier.
3. 👌 It was in my recents so I assume I use it here and there. Mainly just? To say nice? It's on point? It's top 5 in use but also I know would use it regardless if I used a lot of emojis.
4. 🏳️‍🌈 Uh.. we gay. Just- we gay. And I couldn't find the rainbow arch version.
5. 🐑 because.. Sheep?
Top 5 animals really puts me on the spot because so many animals are so amazing and pretty so im going to be rather broad and maybe add a few subspecies I like within it? This counts, it counts. I... Genuinely am struggling to only choose 5 and you can see it and I'm not ashamed to be so bad at this.
3. Foxes! I just think they're neat. They're just fluffy kids and I tend to binge on fox videos every so often. I know a rescue who posts a lot of videos and its so nice to watch all the "hehehehe" babies. There's a fox village in Japan and I need need need to go there like oh!!! Sweethearts!!!! We have a few varieties in Aus but it's illegal to own them, I don't know what's happened to all the old rescues (it used to be legal) and old pet foxes? So I don't think I could work with them or anything. They're labelled as a pest to native wildlife, apparently. Big disappointment.
1. Wolves. I just love wolves okay. Think I was 10 and drawing ugly looking wolves with bad anatomy but I loved drawing then regardless. I don't really have a favourite but can I mention how weird looking maned wolves look? It's not Actually a wolf so I'm being cheeky talking about it but I want to say what is this lanky dude? If I had the chance, and it wasnt illegal in Australia for there to be wolves, much less an any-content wolf-dog, I'd be helping out at a rescue with all those giant guys because you can't necessarily release them when they've been in human care for so long. There's Australia's equivalent, dingos, which I met and got to pet one! They were very fluffy.
2. Horses. I've always been a horse kid. Theyre just so majestic? I was horse riding for a few years when I was a kid and it was always the best time, I want to get back into it but it's just so expensive. I don't necessarily have a favourite breed but draft horses are big fluffy kids. The more manageable gypsy vanner is somewhat similar with the big fluffy legs but I'm an excited kid when I see piebald horses. Gorgeous. So gorgeous.
4. Probably dogs! We have a little puppy and she's a little kelpie mix, she's adorable. I'll go sit down and she'll come over and either sit on or lay part way over my lap. I know a lot of dog breeds off the top of my head but I have to say sighthounds are my favourite. Borzoi's? Silken windhounds? Salukis? Yes please! But I do like German shepherds, aussie shepherds, NSDTR, basically any medium-large fluffy dog (as long as they don't have big, floppy jowls.. sorry but im not the biggest fan of the long jowls).
5. I know I can't group reptiles all in one category, its unfortunate.. Honourable mentions are snakes, geckos, dwarf caimans. But my favourite is ackie monitors! You normally think of monitor lizards as these huge komodo dragons or big lace monitors, the size of a human laying down. Ackies are little versions! Grow about the size of your forearm. I first learnt about Ackies in a Larry fic, believe it or not, an abo! They're so cute!!
Ask me my top 5 :)
