BG3 rant

Unpopular opinion but while I am generally loving BG3 out of combat, I effing hate their encounter design philosophy with every fiber of my being.

I don't mind having to think tactically about boss fights. That's part of the fun of playing this sort of game.

What I don't want to do? Think tactically about every fucking trash fight.

What I really don't want to do? Rest every two fucking trash fights. Especially when just like every other game like this, your map is fucking useless so I spend 90% of my time wandering around lost and getting into random encounters I didn't want.

What I really really don't want to do? Fight mobs with the environment instead of fighting them with my gd abilities. No I DON'T want to constantly scan the fucking overcluttered screen for useful objects that are usually obscured by something or other so I can consider how to use my spells to use them to attack Goblin #7 or whatever the fuck. No I DON'T want to have to do stupid cheese like throw my healing potions on the ground. That's just idiotic.

Seriously just LET TRASH BE TRASH. Let us just bludgeon our way through it! Why the fuck is that such a reprehensible idea!!

Not everyone plays DnD because we just ~love the combat~. Some of us fucking hate the combat and just put up with it so we can do the other stuff. I've literally dropped out of tabletop games because all they ever fucking did was combat when that is literally the most boring part. LET ME STEAMROLL SHIT it's not hurting anyone.

I don't know how to describe it, other than that it feels like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day. Better In The Morning by BrigidFaye - this is Sirius falling back through the veil six months after everyone thought he died. It's a one shot, it's fucking beautiful and there is a scene that hurts so good. Remus needs a gd hug. It also features a soul mate bond, which we love. Like Real People Do by third_crow - a coffee shop au for people who hate coffee shop aus. Remus has epilepsy, Sirius is raising Harry. It's wonderful, and even has a sequel!

Twin High Maintenance Machines by @behaveddestroyerrating - I can't get through a rec list without something from B. This is technically a WIP but every chapter acts as it's own separate story within a universe. This features maybe my favourite Sirius and Remus of all time. They are both unhinged and in love. It's hilarious. Remus is suffering (and he thrives on it). This is a forever fav and everyone should read it over and over. Drover by @krethes - cowboy wolfstar. that's it, that's the post...it's also extremely fucking hot. It's only 1k so it's a quick read, too. wine of the body and the shape of longing by @greenvlvetcouch - I couldn't believe how few hits this fic has when I checked. It is GORGEOUS! Yes, it's dead dove and there is so much blood (read the tags), but honestly that's the appeal. Underground fighting as foreplay. Hot as fuck. The Hut of the Mistold by @lynxindisguise - gorgeous fairy tale au!! It really feels like you're reading from an old collection of stories and they weave together beautifully!! Side note, it's a WIP, but updating regularily. The Mayors of Simpleton by @fruity-individual - I will bang on my drum about this until I die. WOLFSTAR DIVORCE! WOLFSTAR RAISING TEDDY! BLIND REMUS! Listen, the way Sash writes Remus is downright poetic. It's also a regularily updated WIP. her body is a temple down in the frozen food aisle by @achilleslikespeas - this one has everything: lesbian wolfstar. body horror. time loop. poetic descriptions of existing in a grocery store. The way Claude manipulates text in this to further the narritive is just — chef's kiss. Honey Sweet by @vajazzly - You know this one, Ceci, but HIPPIE REMUS. CITY BOY SIRIUS! This fic really made me smile so wide and God was it hot.

for usopps bday i went nuts abt water seven below the cut 👍

also not to go craaazy on the whole ‘relating to characters over our shared personal trauma’ but i don’t know that ive ever related to a character more than usopp… the entirety of water seven made me so gd sad bc it was all him struggling with his own insecurity, and it’s not even untrue bc he genuinely is surrounded by insane fighters, people with powers etc. how can usopp- definition of ‘just some guy’ - handle himself in the same fights as these guys. the usopp that was outmatched by the gag characters in baroque works!!

and even compared to nami, the other straw hat of his power level, she’s shown as much more crucial in the narrative up until that point. she’s a genius at navigating! he’s a genius at sniping, but it never plays as big a role UNTIL water seven.

so when the merry has reached the end of her lifespan, usopp also sees it as a sign that he’s reaching the end of his tenure on the ship! and he fights that notion, he confronts franky n everything, but u can’t do what cant be done, so he flips out on luffy, trying to prove his worth once n for all by beating luffy using usopp’s own tricks. ultimately he loses, and that’s his sign that he and the merry aren’t good enough for the straw hats anymore.

it’s only by becoming sogeking that usopps able to overcome the fear that he isn’t good enough, and hes able to use his true abilities to take down the flag in that one pivotal moment for robin…

n throughout, the crew still love and care for him so much!!! chopper, nami, luffy, even sanji tells franky he shld beat him up for ‘giving our long-nose such a hard time’. zoro’s hardassery i think comes from being the first mate, but also acknowledging usopp as an equal w the right to make his own decisions. That fucking scene where usopp apologises and luffy’s FULL FACE sobbing… who among us insecure people wldnt want a group of friends who love us and want us around so bad!!!

And then the transition from that to thriller bark, where usopp faces down perona and says, ‘I finally found something that I could do and the others couldn’t. I thought i could finally protect them’. He puts on the sogeking mask and it helps him separate from those anxieties and think analytically, which usopp is best at. and he does it again! he beats perona using his brain!! and he doesn’t need that mask again after that. It’s about the growth, the realisation that even if you aren’t as strong, you’re still valued and wanted, and that reassurance giving you the support you need to explore ur own strengths that others might not have. cmon man water seven rules and usopp rules. He’s my guy.

man i love badgood dramas so much!!! i chose ones that are flatout objectively not good, but i was glued for them all. here's a few that are jumping out

triad princess (taiwan). it ends on a cliffhanger that will never be continued, the relationship building is non-existent, jasper liu basically plays himself yet still acts like he's doing a community service project, but omg it's cute and hit all the right notes for me. fave bonus is that one of the gangster henchmen falls in love with the FL's best friend, a shy boy who works at a mart and makes youtube covers

hold on, my lady (chinese). a bandit is offered a choice when she's caught during a heist: be executed or marry this aloof but beautiful but delicate son of the general. she chooses the latter, and hijinks ensue. made on a budget of pocket lint and just wacky, im going to rewatch this today, actually. fave bonus moment: the FL falls dramatically down and the ML breaks both his arms instantly when he tries to catch her

thumping spike & thumping spike 2 (korean). the two are barely related, but both deal with a competitive men's volleyball team! thumping spike 1 is about a washed up competitive female player going to coach a high school team to glory (just dont...think too critically about the age difference, there) and the second is COLLEGE EDITION with a love quadrangle between two identical twins, one of whom is a cheerleader for the team, the ace volleyball player who's too cool for school, and the WILDCARD volleyball player who gets mad when people call him gorilla. the second one is definitely worse than the first one, but neither are bringing home awards. i still watched them both in one sitting.

my heart twinkle twinkle (korean). this show is actually insane and a parade of toxic that i can never, in good conscience, ever rec to anyone. but gd did i watch the whole fucking thing. look at this fucking poster. this fucking poster looks like it was doused by a fake snow machine.

premise: Noble But Poor family has 3 daughters: the eldest, who is the caretaker; the middle who is Aloof and Ambitious; and the youngest who is A Fucking Menace. they are lead by their single father, who owns a fried chicken store

Rich but Dysfunctional family also has 3 children: the eldest, who is the only son and a fucking piece of work, the middle who is school colleagues with the other family's middle daughter and a hot mess who loves Da Club, and the youngest, who is clingy and gets into a ton of fights with the other family's youngest but is otherwise ok. they run AN EVIL FRIED CHICKEN FRANCHISE that is poisoning people through subpar ingredients!!

there's so much that's so wrong with this, im going to bullet point it from another post i made:

the entire premise is that there’s a fried chicken restaurant rivalry between two families but somehow there’s murder and slush funds and this guy who owns a string of fried chicken franchises named after himself (yeah) has direct access to seoul’s police commissioner at any given moment

one of the main actresses was involved in a scandal a little over halfway through production so they just….vanish her character/entire plotline like it never happened

the main male lead is toxic personified. him and li chengyin from goodbye my princess could co-author a dating strategy/forced-marriage-after-you-kill-your-girlfriend’s-head-of-household book because jesus christ. he literally screams that he hates women and he ends the drama (rightfully!!) in fucking prison

the second female lead disappears/creates a new identity and becomes a chicken chef student of the world. shes later in a love triangle between a single dad chicken shop interior designer and another vanilla guy

that's right, one guy’s job is he’s an architect for chicken restaurant interiors i cant

the main male lead leaves the main female lead’s father to die in a chicken-coop-themed arsony and then cha-cha slides into the son-in-law’s role during the father’s funeral and later MARRIES the female lead

the main male lead tells the female lead’s father’s grave that HE WON AND DAD LOST because the male lead is standing and the father’s in the dirt?!

a friend/almost!love interest of the second female lead dies tragically in a chicken delivery motorcycle chase????

it's the worst drama i've ever seen. i watched all of it.

kakafukaka (japanese)

this one is so gd weird and unappealing it somehow circled back around and became off-puttingly charming to me? so the premise is that there's a 20something year old woman whose life has gone to shit and she ends up in a sharehome with the most sexually dysfunctional bunch of people in the world. one of these is her ex, who tells her that she's the only one he can get a boner with (yeah) and asks her to help him get over his impotence in order to write his novel (yeah). if you read the whole show as kind of an exploration into sex without romance/love, it's as not bad, and there's something weirdly endearing about everyone--i really love the second female lead akari in particular. but it's not a good show, not by a long shot (MDL rating? 6.6), and the ship is dysfunctional at the very best. the ost somehow is great though?

So soft for you, I can't even begin. Like, I don't understand how people ever think he's cold, he is the epitome of soft boi.

Blushes when you complement or brag on him.

Turns into a scrunched up, spluttering mess if you call him cute(we love our tsundere).
