oh my god this sounds so wholesome. so i will try to mainly focus on jin ling and jiang cheng, as asked, but u are giving me free reign for other characters, and since i’m simply a slut for forcing lan wangji and jiang cheng to get along, i will also add him and a-yuan into this road trip, for no reason other than to cause chaos :) 

okay so if jin ling and a-yuan are kids then, obviously its wangji and jiang cheng in the front seats, the kiddos in the back 

idk where they’re going, use ur imagination, they’re going where ever you want them to be going

jiang cheng makes sure they have enough snacks, and wangji makes sure they have healthy snacks (except they pout at him once and he hands over the chocolate, bc he is a weak weak man, and will indulge a child in anything) 

honestly, i think this roadtrip goes without many problems, like i imagine jin ling loves a-yuan’s company and a-yuan can entertain jin ling better than anyone else, and jiang cheng and wangji wouldn’t be talking a whole lot, so it’s just a peaceful roadtrip to where ever they’re going 

mostly jiang cheng makes sure that jin ling is content to be sitting in the backseat, and isn’t about to throw a tantrum (he’s a very spoilt child) 

they probably take a lot of stops to make sure jin ling gets his snacks, and bathroom breaks, and one particular stop bc the kids saw an animal and wanted to look at it closer, or at least get a picture of it, and again. wangji and jiang cheng are both weak, so ofc they oblige 

the biggest issue is that wangji is a backseat (passenger seat) driver, and hisses if jiang cheng goes even a km over the speed limit and “you turned that corner quite sharply, are you sure you do not wish for me to drive?” “i will turn this car around, so help me lan wangji, do not test me. i don’t know why you had to come with me, just because wei wuxian has work, this is ridiculous. the kids are more well behaved than you’re being, you’re impossible.”

however, if we’re talking jin ling and a-yuan being teenagers? lmao c h a o s 

because wangji backseat drives, he gets put in the actual backseat, bc jiang cheng might actually physically harm the man if he has to look at him

you may think jin ling would get the front seat, bc he is a spoilt boy, who usually gets what he wants

no. a-yuan gets the front seat. jin ling is the type of person who skips through 500 songs bc he wants a specific song but refuses to pick it out saying that it’s gonna come up eventually, and then he doesn’t even listen to the song properly, and skips like half the song, and it’s infuriating 

so a-yuan gets the front seat, bc he’s a civilised human who will take requests, add it to the queue and let songs play through (and he also doesn’t backseat drive) 

“my car, my rules, if you don’t like them, you two can come by yourselves, and i’ll enjoy a peaceful drive with a-yuan” 

in retaliation, jin ling requests ‘what does the fox say’ no less than 10 times during this road trip, and bc he was raised by wei wuxian, a-yuan obliges every time 

in retaliation to this, jiang cheng makes sure ring ding dong by shinee ends playing right after what does the fox say, bc it’s jin ling’s biggest ear worm. a-yuan obliges. 

lan wangji is simply suffering. 

none of the four are ever gonna get the two songs out of their head. whenever they arrive at their destination they keep humming it and hating every second of it, the rest of their family hates them too. 

the actual road trip itself is probably fine, a few arguments between everyone, as they discuss real life problems, like the realistic probability of aliens having made contact with and continue to live on Earth (wangji and jin ling are very much on the ofc they have and ofc they do train of thoughts, and jiang cheng doesn’t really give a shit either way, and a-yuan says ofc aliens exist, but is skeptical of the rest) 

they stop off at a dodgy roadside cafe because jin ling’s stomach was ‘simply going to eat itself, i’m so hungry jiujiu’, and they eat questionable burgers 

lan wangji is still suffering. he questions why every time they plan a family holiday wei ying seems to have work suspiciously on the day they leave every time, forcing him and a-yuan to catch a ride with jiang cheng and jin ling 

he’s still backseat driving, from the actual backseat. jin line and a-yuan have a bet for how long it takes before jiang cheng actually turns the car around because of him. 

he didn’t, but it got very close when wangji suggested that jiang cheng take his driving test again 

by the time they arrive at their destination none of them want to look at each other, and will probably avoid each other for like an hour or two, before they can look at each other without wanting to punch each other

Hahah loving jc as the dick that he is is the way to do it! go for it. :) also, sorry this was so delayed I wanted to reread the Cloud Recesses arc so it would be fresh in my mind before answering.

In terms of jc the Cloud Recesses arc is perhaps the most 'mellow' we see him aside from the Lotus Pod Extra but for me it's still impossible to find him a worthwhile person. I can already see the faults in his character that I know will only get worse as he grows older. Canonically I don't see how he would have any friends studying in the Cloud Recesses if he didn't come as a package deal w Wei Wuxian. I mean I doubt jiang cheng would have any friends without WWX period. In fact jiang cheng doesn't make any friends over the course of 13 years. He's also unable to find a wife bc of his temperament and behavior...

What we can glean about their relationship in the Cloud Recesses arc (and even the Lotus Pod Extra) is that any time WWX gets a kind word or understanding from someone, jiang cheng scoffs at it. Any time someone shits on WWX, jc is there to agree, to relish the idea of WWX being punished, and shit on him some more. He would be an immensely exhausting person to be around. He doesnt believe in WWX's ideas and ingenuity, (as NHS does for example), he doesn't believe WWX is hurt, he always assumes the worst of him, he doesn't believe LWJ might like WWX. The only thing he ever seems to believe is that WWX will dishonor YunmengJiang and that WWX should be punished. So for a kid who supposedly wants his father's approval so badly he instead constantly acts like his mother's mouthpiece/minion. He reprimands WWX like he's trying to become Madam Yu 2.0. I see jc stans all the time being like oh he had to keep WWX in check bc WWX was such a lOOooose canon, for the good of the Clan!! lol listen JFM didn't give a f...about WWX's behavior (in his letter to LQR) why are you so concerned? JFM would have preferred for jc to try & save his peers in the Xuanwu cave or at least to understand why that was the correct course of action rather than for him to just sit in front of the class in the Cloud Recesses and tell WWX off for giving LQR as good as he got, while actually still breaking the rules himself but eschewing punishment.

But does WWX get away with ANYTHING in Lotus Pier? When we know he is punished constantly for EVERYTHING? This is jiang cheng fully being his mother's mouth piece. It's not something WWX would get away with, it's something jc knows JFM wouldn't mind. Which is why he's so pissed off. Which begs the question if JFM would not be upset with WWX's behavior why does jc need to criticize him? Again :

A dark expression shadowed Jiang Cheng’s face, and his voice was filled with anger. “Why are you so proud of yourself? What is there to be proud of?! Is being told to get out some amazing accomplishment? You’re making our entire clan lose face!”

and his glee at the idea that WWX will be punished leaves a bad taste in one's mouth considering how WWX was perpetually punished in Lotus Pier by jiang cheng's mother for... existing.

Jiang Cheng smiled grimly. “Now that you’ve thoroughly offended both Lan Wangji and Lan Qiren, you’re basically dead tomorrow. No one’s going to clean up your corpse either.”

and again

Without the old one, only the young one remained. This would be easy to deal with! Wei Wuxian rolled off the bed and laughed while putting on his boots. “Heaven’s charmed clouds are blessing me with shade.” Jiang Cheng was beside him polishing his sword with loving care when he decided to spill cold water over Wei Wuxian’s head. “Just wait until he gets back. You can’t escape punishment.”

Where others like NHS see value in WWX's thoughts

Nie Huaisang thought for a while. “Actually, I thought what you said was very interesting,” he said, not entirely able to hide his envy and yearning.

jc is always dismissive of WWX's ideas. These are inventions that WWX realizes. Demonic cultivation in the first conversation and The Spirit-Attraction Flag and The Compass of Evil in the second:

“Enough,” Jiang Cheng warned. “Whatever nonsense you spout, you better not head down that sort of dark road.”

Changing the topic, Wei Wuxian said, “If only there was something like fishing bait that could draw the water ghosts in. Or, something that could point in the direction they’re hiding, like a compass, that sort of thing.”

“Lower your head and watch the water,” Jiang Cheng said. “You’re letting your fantasies run wild again. Concentrate on looking for water ghosts like you’re supposed to.”

“Hey, mounting swords and flying was also only a fantasy once!” Wei Wuxian said.

He's also a hypocrite. Because even though he berates WWX for misbehaving, he himself breaks the rules. He drinks, he even goads WWX into buying liquor, the only difference is that he doesn't get punished for it, and he doesn't feel like coming forward and getting punished for it :

Naturally, Jiang Cheng was too embarrassed to talk about what Wei Wuxian had been up to. After all, all of them had egged him on to go and buy alcohol, and they all deserved to be punished as well. He could only speak vaguely. “It’s nothing. It’s nothing. It’s not that bad! He can walk. Wei Wuxian, why haven’t you gotten off yet?”

It's no wonder WWX is so impressed by LWJ's integrity in spite of his social status, when he's clearly used to the other dynamic :

“Lan Zhan, I really admire you,” Wei Wuxian said sincerely. “After I told you that you had to punish yourself too, you actually did it. You didn’t let yourself off at all. I can’t argue against that.”

A dynamic which is shown repeating in the Lotus Pod Extra where WWX is the only one to get punished for sunbathing, and which repeats here when Wei Wuxian here stops jiang cheng from confronting Zixuan over YanLi's honor (and jc's) and does it himself.

Zixuan :“Why don’t you ask what about her could make me satisfied?” he said in return.

Suddenly, Jiang Cheng rose. Wei Wuxian pushed him away and stepped between them, smiling coldly. “You think you’re very satisfactory? As though you have the right to be so picky!”

Zixuan: “If she’s unhappy, then let her break off the engagement! I certainly don’t cherish your wonderful disciple-sister. If you cherish her so much, why don’t you take it up with your father? Doesn’t he love you more than his own son?”

After hearing the last sentence, Jiang Cheng’s eyes narrowed, and Wei Wuxian was no longer able to contain his own fury. He flew at Jin Zixuan, his fist raised.

WWX takes the punishment alone. Same way he offers to do when he hurts himself falling from a tree because jc threatened him with dogs. meanwhile jc is gleeful to see him being punished.

[Wei Wuxian] was kneeling on the stretch of pebble road to which Lan Qiren had assigned him when Jiang Cheng walked over from afar and mocked him. “You’re kneeling so obediently.”

“It’s not like you don’t know I have to do this all the time.” Wei Wuxian’s voice filled with schadenfreude. “But this Jin Zixuan guy, there’s no way he hasn’t been pampered and spoiled rotten since birth. No one’s ever forced him to kneel, I’m sure of it. If he doesn’t wind up crying for mommy and daddy today, I’m not named Wei.”....

Wei Wuxian "...It’s a good thing you didn’t do anything.”

“I was going to. If you hadn’t pushed me away, the other side of Jin Zixuan’s face would be hideous too.”

“Stop it. His face is uglier for being lopsided."

WWX is happy to have spared jc from getting into trouble but jc makes the whole thing about himself anyway (like everything else ever) and is upset JFM would rush over for WWX - in his mind. Even though JFM clearly had to rush over to meet with Jin Guangshan not to coddle WWX in any way.

"Jiang Fengmian had never rushed to another clan in less than a day because of him. Regardless of whether what happened was big or small, or good or bad." Never

WWX on the other hand tries to be observant of jc's feelings and reassure him & distract him from his moods :

When Wei Wuxian saw Jiang Cheng’s melancholy expression, he thought he was still upset with what Jin Zixuan said. “You should leave. You don’t need to keep me company any longer. If Lan Wangji comes again, he’ll catch you. If you have time, you should find Jin Zixuan and watch his pitiful kneeling.”

Later in the book after nearly dying in the Xuanwu cave WWX leaves his sick bed to run after jc and comfort him after his mother's rant, even though WWX had to listen to his parents (and himself) being slandered by YZY. jc doesn't spare any thoughts for how other people might be feeling or suffering. His entire perception of the world is centered around himself. To him even WWX's greatest fear doesn't generate empathy, only amusement or later on a form of torture.

From that point onward, they made trouble everywhere together, and if they encountered a dog, Jiang Cheng would always chase it away for him, then enjoy a peal of derisive, unbridled laughter at Wei Wuxian’s expense beneath whichever tree the boy had leapt atop.

he grew up on the streets, often having to fight for food with vicious dogs. After several bites and chases, he gradually became extremely scared of all dogs, no matter the size. Jiang Cheng laughed at him because of this quite a lot of times.

This brings me to the last point. jc's resentment of WWX's interest in Lan Zhan, or in a serious friendship outside of him. I see so many ppl say that bc WWX fought he was kicked out of the Cloud Recesses early... but was he?

Jiang Cheng was somewhat taken aback. “Lan Wangji? What was he doing here? He still has the nerve to come see you again?”

“Yeah, I think his bravery is laudable if he still has the nerve to come see me. His uncle probably told him to check on me and see if I was kneeling properly.”

Jiang Cheng’s instincts were sending him ominous signals. “So were you kneeling properly?”

“I was then,” Wei Wuxian replied. “But I waited for him to walk away a bit, then took a tree branch, lowered my head, and dug out a hole in the dirt near me. It’s the pile right by your foot—there are ant tunnels there. It took me so much effort to find them. Anyway, I waited for him to turn back and see my shoulders shaking. He had to have thought I was crying, so he came back and asked. You should have seen his face when he caught sight of the ant tunnels!

“…” Jiang Cheng said, “Why don’t you just get the hell out and go back to Yunmeng? I bet he never wants to see you again.”

Thus, that evening, Wei Wuxian packed up his things, got the hell out, and went back to Yunmeng with Jiang Fengmian.

Repeatedly throught his stay in the Cloud Recesses even while NHS was observing that LWJ's behavior around WWX was strange and unique, jc was telling WWX he is hated and bothersome. When WWX wanted to apologize to LWJ jc is completely dismissive of it :

“He hates me already? I was thinking of apologizing to him,” Wei Wuxian said.

“Oh, so you want to apologize now? It’s too late!” Jiang Cheng said derisively. “He’s exactly like his uncle. He thinks you’ve been wicked ever since you were an embryo, so it’s beneath his dignity to pay you any attention.”

Later on when WWX mentioned wanting to invite LWJ to Lotus Pier jc categorically says no.

“Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, “Let’s make this clear. I don’t want him to come, anyhow. Don’t invite him.”

BONUS

jc also always doubts WWX. He suspects him immediately of wrongdoings. He doesn't believe that getting hit with the discipline ruler in Cloud Recesses actually hurt him until LXC confirms that WWX might take more than a few days to heal. He doesn't understand WWX is in actual trouble from the Waterborne abyss and assumes he's fooling around luckily Lan Zhan is there to rescue him:

The disciple’s lower body had already been swallowed by the black whirlpool. It spun faster and faster, and he continued to sink deeper and deeper, as though something hidden beneath the water was pulling down on his legs.

Mounted on Sandu, Jiang Cheng had risen calmly until he was about sixty meters above the whirlpool before he looked down. Filled with displeasure at what he saw, he shouted and dove down. “What are you up to now?!”

The suction force inside Lake Biling grew ever stronger. Wei Wuxian’s sword was optimized for agility, and consequently, its strength happened to fall just short, and they were nearly pulled to the surface of the lake. Wei Wuxian steadied himself and held on to Su She with both hands.

“Someone help! If I can’t pull him up soon, I’ll have to let go!” he shouted.

Suddenly, the back of Wei Wuxian’s collar tightened, and his body was lifted into the air. He twisted his neck and saw Lan Wangji holding him up with one hand.

He maintains this same mindset when he tries to whip LWJ and WWX as they're attempting to leave Lotus Pier after the ancestral hall confrontation when WWX passes out.

Is jc evil in the Cloud Recesses ? No. He's just an annoying, basic, disagreeable asshole who doesn't bring anything positive to someone like WWX. People like jc become obsessed with kind, outgoing, generous people, people who don't set boundaries on what they give and what others take in their friendships. Even though they're dependent on them for their social interactions, because who else would socialize with them willingly, they resent them in equal measure, but at the same time they wouldn't be drawn to another selfish, self centered piece of shit person like themselves.

On a personal note, even Cloud Recesses jiang cheng is someone I would exclude from any personal friend group. Friendship with him is adding a minefield of jealousies and snide comments to every interaction. Things that then others will need to compensate around because he won't compromise or empathize w issues outside of his own concerns.

I just read a great fic by aisthuu "every love story is a ghost story", didn't see it in your recs so wanted to recommend it! LWJ is a guqin composer and teacher, buys a cheap guqin off eBay which ends up being attached to WWX's spirit from canon era. It's bittersweet, LWJ deals with Lan's homophobia (implicit in a Lan way) and his feelings towards the ghost. This is author's only ao3 fic and honestly I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I'm happy I did and hope you will enjoy it too!  [I’ve recently read this one, and loved it!]

Ok so I absolutely have to rec "see you yesterday" by glyphic. It's a wip, but it's currently at 101k so there's a whole lot there, and it's terrible and wonderful and beautiful all at once. The way the backstory of canon events is adapted to the modern-with-cultivation setting is brilliant, and then there's the amnesia, and then there's the time loop. This fic lives permanently rent-free in my brain.

Firstly, yes I have seen your post, and secondly you never asked for this and I am sorry for that.

I could write about their eye contact alone until the end of time, or at least until I succumb to the laws of entropy. I could just idly agree with you, yes, aha it’s love or lust and move on. But. I can’t. I can’t. I mean, this is a story where so much is told by the things that are not said. And there is a lot that can’t be said, either because it’s a character trait or because of censorship issues. I will try and keep this concise, and to do that I’m just focusing on mutual eye contact, and from LWJ’s perspective. Thinking to the BTS where Wang Yibo talks about how LWJ mostly only expresses himself through the eyes.

TL;DR: I disagree, there’s really more to it than that.

LWJ actively avoids eye contact with WWX until around episodes 6-7. He’s a Lan. He can NOT condone or make friends with this unruly, loud, arrogant, charismatic, irritatingly beautiful man. He has bad ideas about the uses of resentful energy. No matter how intelligent, observant and artistic he is. No matter now much of a prodigy and a skilled fighter he is. No matter how hot he is. No matter what his brother says.

He likes him but he doesn’t like that he likes him.

So LWJ actively avoids direct eye contact with WWX unless it’s a glare filled with the fire of a thousand suns. You know, as a warning.

This is until episode 6/7. By this point, they have fought water ghouls at Biling Lake. Drunkenly shared personal mom info. Used the Lan forehead ribbon inappropriately in the Cold Pond Cave, and had Physical Contact when escaping. WWX has called LWJ his Zhiji already. It’s only when WWX keeps his promise not to talk about the Yin Iron and scares NHS away when he tries to extract gossip that LWJ decides to reappraise him. Only then do we get some eye contact which isn’t laced with contempt or uneasiness (which of course JC is there to witness).

They go off and do the lantern ceremony. LWJ does a smile at WWX’s bunny art. That devastating look he gives WWX as he makes his vow. You can almost lipread LWJ’s brain thinking “marry me now”. LXC was right about him. Despite this, he tries to deal with the yin iron by himself because WWX is The Agent of Chaos after all. But, WWX is not going to let him bear this responsibility alone, because of course he wouldn’t. 

Enter Battle Couple WangXian. They fight the fairy statue, multiple puppets, and the dire owl. Xue Yang happens. They meet famous duo SL & XXC and LWJ & JC totally fanboy over them, and it’s only then, some real Zhiji vibes hit LWJ, albeit with a bit of a sombre mood after WWX’s chat with XXC. My next fave moment of eye contact, I can literally feel LWJ’s stomach butterflies here after they watch SL and XXC leave together:

Whoa, is that us now? I mean, do I dare to even hope that that’s us? 

LWJ decides to leave WWX in Qinghe under cover of darkness and asap. He has to get the yin iron back to Cloud Recesses with a low profile. So we don’t see them together again until the Wen Indoctrination Camp. They do a bunch of worrying and looking out for each other, and then we get the cave scene which has been giffed 4 million times already by others who have done a better job, but I haven’t so I slowed it right the fuck down. Forgive the bad colouring I’m trying not to take too much time over this. You’re right about this one anon.

Then lots of bad. I skipped these gifs because picture limit. In summary, LWJ is hurt and angry, lots of angy stares and sword pointing. How could WWX hurt himself by using these methods?! But then WWX promises he will never use demonic cultivation, and agrees to receiving help. LWJ can chill a bit. Night Hunt on Phoenix Mountain. I left this one out as it’s pretty self explanatory. “I used to think of you as my Zhiji”. “I still am”. Ugh but WWX knows he can’t unless he fully informs LWJ of his situation. It’s bittersweet. THE RAIN SCENE. This is not heart eyes or horniness anon it is pure PAIN. 

Let’s skip to some good stuff. Yiling dinner date! LWJ can handle strict Lan sect punishments, hoards of puppets and fierce corpses but this situation? Not so much. He is so confused by this strange clingy child and the rabbling crowd and here comes his reason for being here in the first place knight in shining amour! (Ur right here anon, pure heart eyes).

Do I put a Nightless City gif here? Do I put the cliff scene here? It’s the most LWJ’s facial muscles move in the entire show and yet I can’t bring myself to gif it. It’s pure agony. Definitely not any longing romantic looks or horniness here.

So moving swiftly on, jumping to ep 2 for the epically long eye contact moment aka when WangXian are reunited. LWJ. does. not. take. his. eyes. off. WWX. until. he. hears. Zidian. crackle. OMG.

Anyway, after the Yin City arc and watching SL walking away with what remains of XXC’s spiritual cognition, LWJ is not holding back now. The amount of eye f***ing after this moment is frankly obscene. I’ll just leave some gifs of that.

I kind of ran out of steam but you get my point. I guess you can boil the other moments down to the fact they love each other? But I don’t know why anyone would want to simplify things like that. I know I’ve missed a bunch of stuff but this is long enough as it is! My opinion about this will probably change too as I’m still fairly new to the fandom. You just accidentally unlocked an Easter Egg with your comment, as it’s what I’m currently nerding out over haha. I’ll shut up now.

Ok so I forgot to post this a month ago BUT here are some numbers highlights from my The Untamed rewatch #4:

WWX passes out/collapses a total of 14 times (2 of which he was already sitting down) and LZ catches him a total of 7 out of those 14 times. I’m a little disappointed bc I thought it would be more?? I guess most of the catching didn’t happen until post-episode 33 anyway so LZ gets a pass on this one

Shijie makes soup 10 times, implying that Wow that is a lot of Major Arguments for WWX and JC and also Wow that is a Lot of Love To Give

LXC Meddles 8 times (“meddling” here defined as actively working towards Getting WWX And LWJ Together and not just giving a Knowing Smirk^TM when they do something Particularly Gay, examples include “oh hey WWX I see that you have injuries, why don’t you go soak in the cold springs for a bit? Oh, I see my brother is ALSO soaking in the cold springs at this very moment while very completely shirtless?? I had absolutely no idea, none at all” or “hm little bro I think it’s about time you make some friends let’s herd WWX towards you At All Times and make Subtle Hints that I Approve This Match. Look, I will even Smile In Amusement as you Clench Your Sword And Walk Away In Anger At This Suggestion” or “ok so I KNOW I’m not supposed to hide fugitives in Cloud Recesses much less the fugitive known as the Yiling Patriarch BUT I will make an exception for you because of my brother’s Undying Love And Devotion. Blood was spat by a main character (read: someone who has a name) a total of 47 times. That’s almost once an episode if you average it out. Less than I expected for a cdrama but still rather impressive tbh. Note: if it happened multiple times throughout the show via flashbacks I only counted it once because technically it would only be One Event of Blood Spitting

In episode 8 Lan Zhan says “wu liao” 3 times in like 5 minutes and honestly mood, that’s also how I, another Disaster Gay, would respond to my crush flirting flitting around me like a gnat

Wuji plays a total of 77 times (67 times in the background, 10 times in-show aka LZ and/or WWX are playing/singing it)*

In episode 29 Wuji plays a total of five times including one time Full Version which is what I’m calling the version that plays in the credits with Full Vocals and Maximum Romance

In episodes 13 and 35 and 43 Wuji plays three times in a row ???? Wow when the song isn’t enough to cover the whole length of the Tenderness WWX and LZ are Emitting Towards Each Other so they just have to loop it

In episode 43, including the three-times-in-a-row during the snow scene, Wuji plays a whopping total of eight (8) times!!!! Excluding intro/outro the episodes are only like 40 mins long!!!! What!!!

In episode 50 Wuji plays only 7 times* which is less times than in episode 43 BUT it includes an astounding THREE TIMES with Full Vocals and Maximum Romance and tbh I think that in itself gives it the win. The Barrage of Wuji in the last half of the episode simply Cannot Be Matched

*Honestly the count of 7 times might be a little off (and therefore the total count of 77 might also be a little off) because it played So Many Times In A Row towards the end of episode 50 and I simply Could Not Handle It

Note: it was Too Much for me to also count the Number Of Times LXC Sighs And Closes His Eyes and also the Number Of Angry Fist Clenches during this one rewatch because honestly keeping track of Wuji itself was quite a feat BUT I will probably be doing a fifth rewatch at some point and will update this list accordingly. I did also start counting the number of times JC Rolls His Eyes but that was just like. Every time he blinked. So I did not end up also counting the number of JC Eye Rolls unfortunately

ok so DP lwj obviously has mountains of equipment and wwx is hungry to get his hands on anything besides the like, idk, fuji or whatever yanli+jc got him for his birthday (it’s a good camera obviously but he wants to get his hands on the professional stuff) and he’s just so fucking eager and lwj is like “I’m supposed to trust this man with my kit? for the entire shoot?? are you sure????” and it’s all very icy and whatnot and wwx is like “well the DP hates me but at least I’m getting Real Industry Experience” but also he really is good at his job and eager and a quick learner and lwj notices this and they get to like, actually conversing (cause wwx is Always There cause he takes the AC thing seriously like he’s always there and it’s gonna be a Problem but like maybe the good kind of Problem but anyway) so they get to talking and wwx is so hungry for experience and work and film and lwj’s like “well do you have stuff?” and wwx is like “ahaha it’s embarrassing I don’t have real equipment” and lwj is like “ok but Do You Have Stuff” cause he’s been through the rigamarole with wannabe cinematographers who have super fancy gear and a shit reel so wwx pulls up like a private vimeo link or something he doesn’t even have a website and passes lwj his phone and is like “I’m telling you it’s shit” and lwj watches it and it’s all, y’know, shot on a four-year-old iphone and cheap projects for friends-of-friends with some footage from his own camera and it is.

just some of the most beautiful work he’s seen and lwj is like “mn” and losing it inside like this rando that huaisang brought in could literally be shooting this whole film and instead he’s just happy to hold? the camera?? like what the FUCK man he hasn’t even been to school! he’s self-taught! he’s barely in the industry (idk in this au wwx has a day job cause That’s Showbiz and also crushing parental expectation or whatever) and his reel (his reel) is this incredible piece of art and like, what could he do if he really had the chance to go for it??? plus, also, it’s week mumble of the shoot and lwj has gotten used to wwx being just There all the time and actually really likes it and has started soliciting wwx’s advice and wwx is like “dude it’s your shoot I’m just filling in for [insert character here; let’s be honest it’s probably su she]” and lwj is like “mn” but he’s also like “please work with me forever” and wwx is like “what” and he’s like “what” and anyway, the shoot ends and lwj puts him up for some major high-level jobs even though it means lwj can’t work with him and they’re both bummed about it but don’t talk to each other and then wwx is like, “huaisang, I am getting such good work but I’m so upset that I’m not working with lan zhan, what’s up with that” and huaisang’s like “you mean he hasn’t asked you to AC? he hates working with everyone but you” and wwx is like “no he keeps fobbing me off on other shoots” and huaisang is like “wei-xiong you colossal dumbass those are really good opportunities he’s sending your way” and wwx is like “what” and huaisang is like “what” and lwj is like “what” and wwx is like “but don’t you want to work with me though?” and lwj is like “literally always but your talent shouldn’t be wasted” and wwx is like “but I want to work with you” and lwj is like “I mean mood” and they rub their two braincells together and are like “galaxy brain idea porque no los dos” and they do that and also they kiss about it

Alright, so I mentioned in discord yesterday that Thalassa’s been dimension hopping. (We all have that one OC.) She’s currently hanging out in MDZS/Untamed world and causing chaos - as she does. @starofthemourning asked what specifically she was getting up to. So have a ramble!

- Thalassa was just minding her business, cruising through Death’s realm as she does from time to time, visiting past children and friends, helping newly deceased souls cross over, etc., etc., when she gets yoinked into a completely different land of the living.

- Thalassa: Toto, we are not in Eos anymore.

- She’s been summoned into the body of a young woman by a group of demonic cultivators that pushed some buttons they should not have. They are a cult, because of course they are, and Thalassa has no idea what’s happening, but they are cuckoo bananapuffs and leaning WAY too hard on the cult thing - virgin sacrifices, child sacrifices, torture, lotsa bad things. Thalassa in her new, 100% human body, says no.

- Enter JC! Who, as we know, hunts down demonic cultivators with a single mindedness that is probably more than a little unhealthy. And this is...I’m saying like 3 years after WWX died, so some things as still fresh (and also, other people are still alive to react to Thalassa and her...Thalassa-ness).

- JC arrives to find that Thalassa has already solved the problem. Very thoroughly. This strange woman covered in blood, with lines of fire burning across her skin and a smile that’s all teeth and gold, gold eyes that burn with power, escorting children and missing travelers out of the smoking ruins of their former prison, carrying the dead and dying with her. Because she cannot save them, but they will die free.

- JC is immediately Suspicious. This woman is not a cultivator. She is also not human. He is sure of it. He absolutely cannot prove it. (The body she’s currently inhabiting is human, she used to be human in body and soul and still is to an extent - she’s not lying.)

- Thalassa ends up being dragged to Lotus Pier along with some of the kids she saved, because orphans and we all know that Thalassa can and will adopt everything that breathes if it stands still long enough. She has technically done nothing wrong and has earned the gratitude and good will of quite a few people, so it would look bad if JC just disappeared her. But Something Is Afoot, so JC isn’t about to let her go gallivanting across the countryside either.

- Thalassa notices pretty quick that these people bow a lot. In greeting, in farewell, to show respect. Thalassa is Not About That. She is the Sea and the Sea Does Not Bow. It’s not such a big deal at first because the circumstances of meeting are...messy. But once they’re in Lotus Pier, people start noticing that she never bows, even after they’ve bowed to her, and they are Offended. The only ones that are not are the kids that she adopted. No one says anything at first, but they all make spectacular pissy faces that Thalassa delights in. JC eventually snaps at her, snarling about respect, and Thalassa calmly replies that if she ever bows to him or anyone else, they will have earned it. (”I have only ever bowed to my Mothers, to Death and to the Light of Dawn, and no other.”) JC, knowing that she’s not human, but not knowing exactly how, doesn’t bring it up again.

- Thalassa likes Lotus Pier. It’s bright and colorful and loud and surrounded by water. It’s not as good as her waters, of course, but it’s nice to be able to swim when the mood strikes. It’s nice to be able to swim with the children, nice to know that everyone learns to swim at Lotus Pier and that they take it seriously. The first time she catches JC teaching the kids she brought with her to swim she stares because he’s not gentle exactly, but...softer. These people operate on different rules than her, but it’s nice to know that somethings always stay the same.

- It takes Lotus Pier a little while to figure out that they’ve been adopted, but they get there. Thalassa is the weird big sister/aunt/mother figure that will be getting you into trouble one moment and then helping out get out of it the next. She doesn’t bow and they don’t make her. She’s chaos in human skin, but some of them (far, far too few) remember that Lotus Pier has always had a soft spot for chaos gremlins and their antics. It brings smiles to their faces when they see this strange whirlwind of a woman trail after their Sect Leader, tugging at his sleeves and leaning into his space and laughing with a smile brighter than the sun when he swats at her, a secret grin tugging at the corners of his scowl.

- At some point, Thalassa meets other sects. It goes...well it goes. For maximum chaos, let’s say its a discussion conference. At Jinlintai. Which brings us right back to the Thalassa and bowing thing.

- JC and YunmengJiang have been dealing with Thalassa’s bullshit for - months? a year? who knows, it’s been awhile - at this point and know that it’s better to just Roll With It.

- The rest of the cultivation world has very much not learned this lesson.

- The Lan are Offended. So Offended. Depending on the Lan, at least. LXC is pretty chill and would probably also be offended, but not let it bother him much. LQR leans so much on propriety that he might just qi deviate. LWJ also leans pretty heavily on propriety but he is also that person who is So Done With Everyone’s Bullshit that he’ll just walk right out of the room so who knows.

- The rules of propriety! Broken!! Without cause or care!!! The Lans are flipping their shit. Quietly. And with great dignity.

- The Nie also kinda offended, but not nearly as much as the Lan. It’s not often that a woman will look Sect Leader Nie in the eye and refuse to bow to him, but NMJ can admire the guts it takes. He’s also the most likely to bring it up and Thalassa will calmly tell him what she tells everyone who asks - that she does not bow. Most especially not for social niceties that mean next to nothing at the end of the day.

- She absolutely bonds with NHS over the arts. He shows off his fans, she does a dance or two with them, they ramble at each other, they are now best friends. (JC is in the background being a Dispair because he knows, he knows, the NHS is an Enabler. He should never have allowed them to meet.)

- The Jin...well. Thalassa is a woman. Thalassa is very pretty. Thalassa knows she is very pretty and flirts as she pleases and moves with a grace that draws many a eye. And JGS...is JGS.

- You know that post that’s buried in my STotS story tag where Mera, literal Queen of Atlantis, breaks a man’s arm because he put his hands on her without her permission? I’m not saying that happens...but that 100% happens.

- JGS tries to be all smooth and Thalassa is Not Having It. She is well aware that 1) this jackass is married AND absolutely does not have the permission of his wife to fuck around and 2) JGS has a reputation among women. And it is not one that endears JGS to her.

- So he puts his hands on her. Pulls her close and tries to flirt. She tells him to let go. He smiles in that ‘aw you’re playing hard to get, how cute’ way that he probably thinks is charming but really wants to make women punch his face in, and gropes her. So Thalassa breaks his arm, snaps it in her hand and doesn’t let go. She uses the pain and the leverage of her grip to force him to his knees before her.

- It draws attention. JGS doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who gets in physical fights much - he probably doesn’t have much pain tolerance. He’s likely screaming. And you know cultivators are trigger happy little shits so swords are drawn. Thalassa smiles, all teeth.

- JGS is probably demanding that JC ‘put his woman in her place’. JC, having witnessed what happened and far less inclined to put up with this man than he was in the immediate aftermath of the Sunshot Campaign when all he had was the ashes of his sect, is having None Of It. He’s like well if she’s my woman why are you touching her and if she said no, why are you still touching her?

- NMJ approves. JGS deserves this. He’s had it coming for years. He is so happy he gets to witness this. As far as he’s concerned JGS brought this on himself and if he can’t handle it, maybe he should try keeping his dick in his pants.

- Thalassa is not impressed. She’s heard the titles thrown around. Sect Leader, Chief Cultivator, Your Excellency. She is well aware that leaders do not represent the entirety of the people, yet these people overthrew a tyrant and let this take his place? (”So you allow an oathbreaking rapist to lead you. This explains so much.”)

- JGY steps up and tries to smooth over the situation. Thalassa does not allow it. (”The next time he touches me, I will cut off his cock. If any woman he’s touched comes to me for help, I will rip out his intestines and strangle him with them.”)

- The Jiang are the only ones who know that she means this 100% literally. More than a few of them are okay with her following through. JC is standing at her shoulder, glowering at the whole room because Thalassa is one of His People at this point and you better believe he’s not going to let someone, not even another Sect Leader, not even the Chief Cultivator, disrespect her this way.

- JGY continues to deescalate with varying levels of success. (Thalassa is old. She is old and has lived through much. She knows what a viper looks like no matter how honeyed the words or how silver the tongue or how sweet the smile. This child thinks he can manipulate her. How cute.)

- In the end, no action is taken against Thalassa. JC is loud in his defense of her actions and NMJ and LXC side with him. JGS was in the wrong and his behavior was disgraceful. The Jin have no choice but to concede fault.

- Thalassa may or may not spend the rest of her time in Jinlintai teaching as many women as she can how to cripple a man twice their size.

Then they go on for awhile and i get the impression that they’re trying to Flirt but are doing it Badly

Kinda sucks how our guys get possessed and turned against us.

Haha yeah, when I read the norse mythology book all I could imagine of as Loki and Thor was Hiddleston and Hemsworth 🤣 As for DW audiobooks, the official company and website that works on them is called bigfinish, if it helps! They do physical orders and digital downloads. DW is their main focus, but they do audibooks for a lot of other shows too. A good portion of them are older UK shows, but I've seen them do things for Pathfinder and Star Trek before now too - CC 🦊

Ooh, those books sound really interesting! I totally forgot Call Down the Hawk released this year, and I'm really liking the sound of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe! 🥰My reading year wasn't as productive as I hoped it would be either, but a few I enjoyed out of what I read was Misery by Stephen King, Thrawn Ascendancy by Timothy Zhan and Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden. I was in a big reading slump for the first half of the year so missed out on a lot of reading time, ha 😅 - CC 🦊

I still haven't really recovered from his Versace on the Floor performance and it's been ... how long now? 😂 I also love the video of him trying to cook the chicken and just struggling. to answer your question: i hate to say this but i’m pretty sure that i unfortunately would not be besties with neither lwj nor wwx. i feel like lwj’s demeanor is way too cold and would come off as rude or arrogant the first time i would meet him. like i’d try to make small talk and he’d be like “mh” or tell me off for not following the rules and i’d be like nope i’m outta here 😂 like i’m very self conscious and often think other ppl don’t like me so lwj would definitely give me that feeling. and wwx would drag me into so much trouble and my anxiety can’t stand that. i don’t like to do stuff that i was told not to do because i get nervous and wwx would definitely be the type of friend to talk me into it so no thanks 😂 i think i’d get along super well with jyl or lsz. like they’re both nice and chill and i feel like they’d be amazing friends to just hang out with and talk to. i’d probably also have a good time with nhs (cloud recesses nhs at least) cause i feel like he’s always in a good mood and it’d just be a really fun time to be around him. 

someone i probably would not get along with as well is jc cause... dude is too emotional for me. like i’m not very good at being emotionally supportive..? that sounds so bad lmao but i mostly just don’t know what to say when someone is crying or mad so yeah.. i couldn’t do shit for him as a friend and i’d feel bad about it so it’s probably best to just avoid becoming friends in the first place (even though he desperately needs more friends!!!)

Thoughts on CQL drama

So I know that while everyone is glad CQL turned out better than expected (and some hate it), I feel like I should voice a few opinions of my own while I’m at this. I’m really glad at all the backstories given to each side character that we’ve all always wanted more development more, but as a wangxian fan for a long time now, I feel like this might either be a good or bad thing for my favourite duo and couple. I’m personally afraid this adaption is easy to ruin the original appeal of wangxian to me---turning them into the typical BL couple.

While we do get cute wangxian scenes, what made me love them wasn’t only because they’re a good couple, but also because of their individual traits and characteristics, of having similar ideals and cored that drew them to each other. I fear that these ‘cute wangxian scenes’ would turn LWJ into a typical ML who’s entire focus was on WWX, but that is not the case—we all should also pay attention to LWJ when he’s struggling to come to terms with his uncle and brother, and how he defies them NOT because of WWX, but because he thinks it’s the right thing to do and he’s simply saving a friend when he saw the possibility. Remember that it doesn’t have to be WWX. It could’ve been anyone and LWJ would have done the save regardless. WWX just happens to be the one unfortunate soul.

Despite LWJ’s focus on WWX was more openly obvious in the show. We do see that despite hurting his foot, he stood up to MianMian. Despite having gotten the goddess, LWJ was the first to realize that WQ was lying, and he could not have known if he doesn’t pay attention to her. He saved Su She on his own accord while defying LQR, which is an event that isn’t related to WWX at all. In the scene where he left WWX sleeping on the roof in the Unclean Realm, he left because his sect and family was in danger. WWX, JC, and NHS are basically safe with NMJ around, so in a way LWJ knows and weighed the importance before he left them. LWJ is still is own human being. He knew that his family needed him more that timie so he left. He even chastised WWX when WWX was being insufferable about how he got involved in demonic cultivation and forced him to sit down and tell him everything and made him swear up and down that he would allow him to help him. That’s what true friends should do.

I’m super glad that LWJ gets so much more development that was obvious to the eye. For me, those traits are long in his character. They simply didn’t get flesh out well enough for enough reader to pick it up from the novels or donghua. What I love about CQL!LWJ is that he learns to speak for himself. He is more vocal about his thoughts. He fights for his own right as a person and not his sect’s or someone else’s puppet that is convenient for manipulation. He supports WWX because WWX is right. There is no justice and ‘peace’ within the cultivation world is meaningless if JGS carries on acting like he is the replacement of the Wen Sect. These are all things that weren’t shown novel or donghua obviously. So I appreciate it. As long as you don’t invest 100% of your focus on only wangxian moments it’s not difficult to see at all.

The content is there. It’s just whether people care to acknowledge it.

As for WWX, I know people are mad that WWX seems to have a crush at first sight on LWJ. To me, WWX might have an immediate liking for LWJ at first, but WWX still is not blinded by love. WWX left JC, JYL, and JFM simply because he knew LWJ was alone in the quest of the Yin Metal. WWX did not leave them because of LWJ. WWX left them because it was the Yin Metal & LWJ wasn’t simply going on any usual quest. WWX swore an oath to LQR and LXC that he wouldn’t tell anyone, and he kept his promise. He went after LWJ because he was the only one who knew about the Yin Metal and how dangerous it is, and he felt responsible for knowing that LWJ, a 15-17 year old boy, is alone on such a dangerous quest. As they say, not knowing is not a crime, but it’s a crime if you knew and ignored it. That’s why WWX went after him. When the fall of Lotus Pier occurred, during their escape, WWX constantly mentions that he wants to bring them to Lanling so they can reunite with LWJ there. It’s obvious he wants to see LWJ as soon as possible (yes you cant deny he’s biased) but you also couldn’t deny that WWX later puts off his own trip to Lanling because he wants to remain behind and give him core with JC. This shows that despite WWX’s obvious desires, he is willing to set LWJ aside first and places JC, his family, as his priority. For the very obvious and similar reason why LWJ left him before: his family needed him at that time more then LWJ did. That’s why WWX remained behind and set JYL ahead to Lanling. When WQ asked WWX for help, WWX did not even hesitate to go full out for her. WWX might have a crush for LWJ at first, but currently it’s been set aside for now so he could save lives. He isn’t even completely sure if LWJ sees him the same way he did with him, so naturally WWX prioritizes lives of people who helped him before in the past and puts his love life and interest aside. He still retains friendship and hospitality to LWJ, as he wasn’t hostile to him and was still willing to speak and reason with LWJ. It shows that WWX is kind of like a “You’re a good person, and I really like you. But right now there is something more important I need to do. The right thing, but I don’t want to drag you with me into something Im not sure if I can fix.” Mood. He asked LWJ whether what he does is right—but doesn’t force LWJ to come with him, because WWX knows that the path he chose might be a path with no chance of returning.

Ultimately, whether those actions are ‘gay’ or not is entirely up to the fans to interpret. It can be heavily platonic, or it can be not. The show did not explicitly advertise them as a couple (we know it’s because of censorship) but that’s also the truth. At some point whatever headcanons or views you have of CQL’s LWJ and WWX are mostly because of your own interpretation of them.

While I do like them as a couple and partners, I feel like it’s important to acknowledge their quality as also individual characters. LWJ and WWX both weights their priorities. While they are obviously attracted and fond of each other and did not like being apart, they know when other things mean more than themselves and acts accordingly. They’re both very fierce and stalwart. And I think that alone is beautiful.
