Sonic Character Cultural Coding

Despite the fact that a good chunk of Sonic characters are anthropomorphized animals, a large amount of them have been given explicit or implicit coding that aligns with cultures that we see on Earth! I’ve found it hard to find a detailed list of it all online, so... I made one!

Disclaimers:

I am going to say: some of these may seem pretty obvious, but at the same time I’ve seen people miss them, so I’ll be including both the “obvious” and “obscure” coding.

If I accidentally said anything offensive, please let me know so I can correct it!

We are going to start with Sonic himself, and then do the rest in alphabetical order! Let’s go!

Sonic the Hedgehog (+bio fam) – Egyptian

We’re gonna start with Sonic the Hedgehog himself– who is very much coded as Black, specifically of Egyptian descent.

In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog 1x50, “Robotnik’s Pyramid Scheme,” Robotnik goes back in time to try and prevent Sonic from ever existing by keeping his ancestors from meeting. Sonic goes back in time to stop him and we meet Masonic and Penelope who are Sonic’s great-great+ grandparents and live in ancient Egypt. Masonic is specifically designed to look almost exactly like Sonic.

Later in the episode they end up inside a pyramid and meet yet another ancestor of theirs, who is an enchanted mummy hedgehog. He gives Sonic a chaos emerald to kick Robotnik’s ass. He also looks exactly like Sonic.

And SPEAKING OF enchanted mummy hedgehogs! In the Sonic Underground episode 1x22, “Mummy Dearest,” Sonic is AGAIN explicitly given ancient egyptian ancestry, when he and his siblings find a book talking about their family history. They use the book to find directions to a magic scroll which is protected by one of their ancestors, Aman-Rapi, who is again very clearly from Ancient Egypt and looks like Sonic.

In this pic, they can be seen posing in front of a wall containing heiroglyphs, with a mummy behind them, Amon-Rapi is literally dressed as a pharaoh wearing a variation on a Khepresh, his name is obviously a play on Amun-Ra… yeah, they’re Egyptian. So, in two different adaptations Sonic has been given explicit African ancestry.

@ifirestone also pointed out to me that Sonic Adventure 2 has a lot of hedgehogs all over the pyramid locations, and @nonbinarycharmybee pointed out that his shoes are based off of Michael Jackson’s shoes in the music video for “Bad;” Jackson is a very celebrated African-American musician. And @killer-squirtle pointed out that his design is most likely based on an African Pygmy Hedgehog, which live in “west, central and east Africa.”

Then in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), there’s a scene where Sonic messes with his quillstyle and is seen experimenting with different styles. Before he settles on the mohawk (very much resembling his AoSTH-SatAM style), he tries out what looks like a Flat Top haircut and Natural Afro; in the latter, he specifically strikes a pose very reminiscent of the 60s Disco Era, which was suuuper associated with African-Americans.

Finally (so far), Sonic’s first english voice actor was Jaleel White for the first three television shows, who is Black; he set the standard for english!Sonic’s voice and what he should sound like. Sonic’s newest VA for Sonic Prime, Devon Mack, is also Black!

Edit 07/15/2022: @birdsareblooming noticed that in Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic is reading the Arabian Nights in Arabic, which is the official language of Egypt as well as several other African and Southwest Asian countries!

As we’ve established Sonic is Egyptian, I think we can also safely assume that his bio fam is as well– Sonia and Manic were in that Underground episode after all, and as Underground doesn’t seem to give them a father I think we can safely assume that the royal lineage is through Aleena. Metal Sonic is a robot but as he’s supposed to be near identical to Sonic, I think we can put Metal under the same coding (no pun intended).

Antoine Depardieu/D’Coolette the Coyote – French

Antoine is very very obviously coded as French, first in the SatAM television show he debuted in and then in the Archie comics. His original surname, Depardieu, is a French surname– I don’t believe D’Coolette is a real surname but it is supposed to sound French with the “d’[x]” structure.

Antoine speaks in an exaggerated French accent, which is spelled phonetically in the comics so that it can still come across. He often (at least in SatAM– I’m not as knowledgeable on Archie canon) needs help understanding English words and asks for translations or butchers pronunciation. He also uses the French phrases “qui” and “sacre bleu.” Unfortunately, in SatAM he also falls into the French Coward Stereotype, which seems to have begun in the 40s and shot into prominence in the United States in the early 2000s.

Babylon Rogues (Jet/Wave/Storm) – Iraqi

The Babylon Rogues are ABSOLUTELY Iraqi. How do we know this? They are literally called the Babylon Rogues.

In case u didn't know, Babylon was an ancient empire that was p powerful in the BC years. Its capitol town– named, you know, Babylon– was an independent city-state and for a while the largest city in the world. They also had one of the seven wonders of the world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon The city of Babylon, whose remains are now a world heritage site, is now what is currently Hillah, Babil Governorate, Iraq.

The Babylon Rogues are clearly named after the Babylonian empire. Their home base is also literally named the Babylon Garden, a reference to the Hanging Gardens. I’m not super knowledgeable on architecture, but the design of the Garden seems to be similar to the Umayyad or Abbasid architectural movements of Iraq.

This all very much codes the Rogues as being descendants of the Babylonian empire, ie: Iraqi.

Bark the Polar Bear – Russian

This is gonna be one of the shorter ones, but a 1996 interview with Hiroshi Kataoka, head of SEGA AM2, says that Bark is “a Polar Bear who lives in Russia.”

I don’t believe Bark is given any specific Russian coding following that, but it should be noted that that was the original intention.

Blaze the Cat – Southern Asian

Blaze’s concept designs can be pretty South Asian-coded first off; in the middle bottom row in the pic above, you can see her wearing Shalwar, (maybe shalwar kameez? it's hard to tell what kinda top she has) which is a popular Southern and Central Asian fashion.

Her final design includes a straight-up bindi– listed as such on the Sonic wiki. Bindi are a mark on the forehead worn by women in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, and occasionally Islam (notably in Pakistan during Eid). While obviously anyone of any race can be of any religion, as the bindi originated in Southern Asia, it’s highly associated with that area and is worn by, well, a crapton of people in South and Southeast Asia, for both cultural and religious reasons.

Also, her kingdom: we don’t see it much in the games (in Rush Adventure, they’re mostly traveling through outlying islands and ruins), but we do see it in the IDW comics.

It seems very inspired by Mughal architecture, an Indo-Islamic style developed from Indian, Islamic, Iranian and Central Asian traditions.

In the mobile game Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Blaze is given a costume for Lunar New Year, as is Silver (see Elise’s section for more Silver info). Lunar New Year is associated mainly with China, but is celebrated in several other Asian countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.

We also got THIS tweet from the official Sonic account in November 2020, showing her having tea in her palace. @penosh-wom pointed out to me that the patterns in the room are “VERY reminiscent of India,” and that the scenery outside looks very much like the Asian coast.

The caption is in Japanese, but translating it to English shows that the descriptive is literally “Indian summer with calm waves.” An Indian summer is a term for unusually long hot weather in autumn, but like. Come on.

With that, I would say Blaze is most likely Indian, though the coding is a little vague. She is at the very least Asian, likely South or Southeast.

Bunnie Rabbot – Southern American

Bunnie seems to be coded as coming from the Southern United States (or at least the Mobius equivalent); she has a Southern US accent, for instance, and similar to Antoine in written media it is spelled phonetically so that it continues to come across; using “ah” instead of “I,” often cutting off the “g” in words ending in “-ing,” etc. Many of her sayings– such as “oh my stars”– are distinctly Southern US as well. This was all established in her SatAM appearances and continued into the Archie comics.

Should be noted that also, very unfortunately, one early Archie comic had her say several things to reference support for the Confederacy as a way of tying into her Southern heritage. Thankfully, as far as I’m aware this has only appeared in this issue and has never occurred again.

Princess Elise (+Soleanna, possibly Silver) – Italian

Soleanna as a country is incredibly inspired by the city of Venice, Italy, to the point where Silver’s original name was Venice. The city is known for being built on 118 small islands connected by canals and bridges, with it often being called the “floating city.”

The amount of canals and bridges in Soleanna is definitely an intentional reference, as well as the very Venetian Architecture of the buildings.

Now, Silver– While it’s unclear if Silver is from his timeline’s Soleanna, he does have a bit of Italian coding as well!

Firstly, his original design was literally named Venice. (design in the pic, bottom left.) And there’s one other little detail– in Sonic and the Black Knight, when you play as Silver (Sir Galahad), his sword looks a LOT like a Cinquedea– an Italian dagger.

Silver being Italian is a bit less certain than the rest of Soleanna, though– the original name and dagger are the only implications and he hasn’t had much since. In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle he is given a Lunar New Year outfit, which could imply he is of Asian descent (see: Blaze); of course he could be mixed, or simply celebrating with Blaze (who also had a Lunar New Year outfit release at the same time). So while Silver isn’t certain, I will say the inclusion of the Cinquedea interested me enough to note him here.

Espio the Chameleon – Japanese

Espio is definitely coded as Japanese throughout his appearances. Firstly, and most obviously, his special interest in being a Ninja; ninjas were mercenaries or covert agents in feudal Japan, incredibly skilled in martial arts and ninjutsu, and they were often used as spies or bodyguards. Japanese legend would also often associate the ninja with invisibility, a major part of Espio’s powerset. Espio’s favor for the shuriken stars as a weapon also tie into this, as well as the fact that in the Japanese script he uses the old-fashioned formal pronouns “ware” and “onushi.”

That’s not all, though, of course: Espio has been stated in the Sonic City character profiles to be “a lover of traditional ways,” specifically referencing his ability to play the shamisen, a traditional Japanese instrument. He is seen playing this instrument in the Chaotix’s Sonic Heroes Team Blast.

@nonbinarycharmybee also pointed out that in THIS official artwork from Sonic Channel in 2021, Espio is seen writing with an ink brush used in Japanese calligraphy.

Gold the Tenrec – Indian

Gold is specifically stated by creator Evan Stanley to be from “whatever the Sonic World equivalent” of India is. This is shown in her design as well: her outfit consists of a brown sari, which is a very popular and traditional style in India, as well as nearby Southern Asian countries.

Knuckles the Echidna (+Clan) – Jamaican + Mesoamerican

Oooh Knuckles is interesting, strap in everyone!

According to Sonic Advance 2: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, Knuckles was originally intended to speak with a Jamaican accent. As well as this, the green/yellow/red color scheme of his shoes was intended to reference the Rastafari flag, Rastafarianism being a religion developed in Jamaica. This heritage can also be seen reflected in his dreadlocks– his quill-style is referred to as such in many canon places. In real life, dreadlocks are a Black hairstyle; the 2011 official census of Jamaica listed 92.1% of the population as Black, and dreadlocks are often associated with the Rastafari movement, as Rastas regard them as a symbol of strength and it emerged as a traditional religious style in the 1940s.

This isn’t the only coding Knuckles gets, though; he is known to be descended from the Knuckles Clan, which are heavily inspired by Mesoamerican cultures.

The Sonic Adventure team traveled through Central and South America to get inspiration for Knuckles’s clan’s culture, which can be seen in basically every aspect of the Clan lore. For instance, clothing worn by the echidnas is very similar to the traditional styles of the Aztecs and Mayas. This includes the decorative feathers seen on Pachacamac and the filmverse!Clan, as feathers were popular and prized materials in pre-colonial Mesoamerca.

Their architecture is almost identical to the step-pyramid temples of the Aztecs, Mayas and Toltecs. The same architecture and clothing style can also be seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), with most of the echidna warriors seen with spears, including baby Knuckles. Throwing spears were used extensively in pre-colonial Mesoamerican battles.

There is also a large serpent that lives near the Mystic Ruins of the Clan, likely a reference to the Aztecs’ Quetzalcoatl and the Mayas’ Kukulkan.

Also, most obviously, the names: Pachacamac is named after a Peruvian archeological site, which itself was named after the Ichma creator god Pacha Kamaq. Tikal, meanwhile, was named after the archeological ruins of a Maya city, consisting of multiple pyramids.

As a sidenote, it should be noted that Ken Penders’ echidnas in the Archie Comics were definitely supposed to be English: @thankskenpenders laid it out very well in this post, but they were written to come from “Mobius’s equivalent of England,” named after the earliest name for Great Britain, and he wrote the species to be “seafaring colonizers.” Penders did write this before the release of Sonic Adventure, but obviously after Knuckles’s initial release with Jamaican-coding, so can we call this whitewashing? I don’t know enough to speak on the subject, but with the reset of Archie comics and its later cancellation, and the games’ Knuckles Clan being represented in several other mediums (such as Sonic X, Sonic the Comic, etc.) I think we can safely say that the Mesoamerican coding is a bit more canon.

Lupe the Wolf (+pack) – Indigenous American

Lupe the Wolf first appeared in the second season of Sonic SatAM, and from her first appearance was incredibly indigenous-coded, as was her wolf pack. This coding continued through the Archie comics. This will mostly focus on the SatAM coding, as Archie pulled from that and, once again, I don’t know a ton about Archie!Canon, but SatAM is pretty damn obvious with its coding.

Lupe’s pack is described as being a native tribe to the Great Unknown region, who live in “harmony with nature.” Their land was captured and culture destroyed by the invading Robotnik, with the survivors retreating into their civilization’s ruins. In order to keep themselves safe, they set up inscriptions near their cave threatening to curse anyone who wanted to come in; Lupe later readily admits this to Sonic, Sally and Antoine, the latter of whom was scared shitless by the idea of getting cursed.

So, for starters, Indigenous American culture is, in general, built a lot upon a reverence for nature, believing that humans are not masters of nature but merely a part of it and acting accordingly. The capture of their land is obviously intended to be reminiscent of American colonization by the Europeans, which was devastating to the Native tribes, with entire cultures and languages being wiped out and Indigenous people still facing serious oppression in modern times.

Much like the Knuckles Clan, the Wolf Pack’s ruins are reminiscent of many indigenous archeological sites, such as Mesa Verde, which is also built into a cliffside. The brief glimpse we have of the Wolf Pack’s pre-colonized land also shows them living in huts reminiscent of many indigenous tribes.

The room Lupe gives exposition in also has them all sitting around a smoking fire pit; many indigenous cultures will gather around fires for meetings and discussions.

Lastly, many people (mainly white people) hold the superstition that Indigenous people have the ability to curse them; just think about how much the “this place is haunted because it was built on a Native burial ground” trope is used. The “Magical Native American” trope tends to say that Natives are magical because of their closeness with nature and “lack of civilization.” This very much falls into the Noble Savage trope, making them appear exotic or inhuman to outsiders and trivializes their connection to the natural world.

SatAM does a pretty decent job subverting this trope, with Lupe very clearly stating there is no curse and they use it to make small-minded intruders keep out; this shifts the ridiculousness of the situation onto the non-Native-coded characters.

Sonic: Ant! Forget the curse. There is no stupid curse! Lupe: He's right, Antoine. We use the threat of a curse to keep out intruders. Antoine: No curses? Oh. Phew and phew again. I am so happy to hear that.

There have been a few other instances of Indigenous-coding with Sonicverse characters, unfortunately not all of them represented as well. The inhabitants of Speedster Island in the Sonic Underground episode “Head Games” are just as indigenous-coded in their appearance, the episode very much falls into the “Native people need the outsiders to come save them” stereotype, as well as the “Native people mistake outsiders for gods” stereotype. The Gogobas in Sonic Boom are also given indigenous-coding with their chief’s headgear, village huts, and jokes made referencing the “cursed burial grounds” trope and them replacing the captured indigenous children in the parody of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The Gogobas are not exactly shown in a positive light, though to be fair, neither is anyone in the show; specifically, the Gogobas’ “tradition” is to guilt trip everyone into doing what they want.

Marine the Raccoon (+Coconut Crew) – Australian

Marine is very obviously coded as Australian; throughout all of her dialogue, she uses Australian slang, most obviously calling her friends “mate.” She also uses the exclamation “strewth,” which is used often in Australia and Aotearoa. Other slang includes “sheila” (woman), “no drama” (no worries) and “ya mug” (friendly insult, usually for a gullible person). The other koalas on her island, who raised her, also use the same language.

Marine is also given pigtails shaped like boomerangs, a tool heavily associated with Australia, specifically Aboriginal Australian hunting. Koalas are also a species that is native to Australia– I believe only Australia but I can’t be sure.

I don’t know enough about the coding of their architecture/etc to say if they’re coded as generally Australian or Aboriginal specifically, though I will say they definitely seem to be native to islands, which may imply they are of a Polynesian tribe near Australia or Aotearoa, such as Māori or Tahitian people.

Should be noted though that Marine appears to be adopted; she was raised by the Coconut Crew, who are all koalas. She does have some serious tanuki coding that may additionally code her as Japanese; for more, see Tails’s section.

Mina Mongoose – Chinese

As far as I’m aware, Mina’s Chinese-coding isn’t super explicit. However, she is seen wearing a red qipao for formal occasions, designed by Jeff Axer.

The qipao, also known as a cheongsam, is a traditional Chinese dress inspired by the Manchu people (founders of the Qing Dynasty). In modern times, the cheongsam is very popular for festivities such as weddings and holidays (especially Lunar New Year), as well as school and work uniforms.

Mina’s qipao is also specifically given a green dragon design very reminiscent of the Chinese dragon as well as many other Asian dragon species. She also is given ornamental earrings and hair pieces that are very clearly inspired by Chinese fashion.

Nocturnus Clan + Voxai Aliens – Roman/Greek

Honestly, these clans seem to have coding in name only– they both have specific cultures of their own, with the Voxai architecture specifically being based mainly on the rock and plants of their home planet, and the Nocturnus clan being very futuristic. But it is interesting to note!

The Nocturnus clan army ranks are very similar to Imperial Roman ones, with titles such as hastatus and praetorian. Ix being called the “Imperator” is also a Latin word from which the word “Emperor” is derived, and referred to an army commander. Ix’s Gizoid prefects are also named Scylla and Charyb, a reference to Scylla and Charybdis, two sea monsters in Greek mythology which appeared in the Odyssey. The historian character Nestor the Wise is named after King Nestor of Gerenia, also from the Odyssey as well as the Iliad.

The Voxai names are also derived from Greek and Roman mythology: their name likely comes from the Latin noun “vox,” which refers to a voice and would reference the aliens’ telepathic powers. Most of the named Voxai are given Greek names as well: Thebes is an important city in Greek mythology, Croesus was the last king of Lydia, and Riadne, Leucosia and Ligaia are names of mythological Sirens.

Rotor the Walrus – Inuk

Rotor is not given any specific cultural coding in SatAM or Pre-Super Genesis Wave Archie; however, in Post-SGW Archie, he and his family are given Inuit coding.

In the post-SGW comics, Rotor is from Artika, a region covered in snow and ice, and we see that the residents live in igluit, traditional homes for inuit in the Central Arctic Canadian area, and the Qaanaaq in Greenland.

Rotor’s community also has an enemy named Akhlut the Orca– in Inuit mythology, the akh’lut is a wolf-orca creature that is known to be aggressive towards humans.

Surge the Tenrec – Japanese

Surge is a relatively new character to the IDW Comics, so we still have more time to learn about her past/potential culture; for the most part, at this point, her coding comes mainly in her appearance. Surge was designed by Mauro Fonseca and Evan Stanley, with Fonseca listing Japanese delinquents, specifically sukeban, as one of the inspirations for her design.

Sukeban are Japanese delinquent girls, the word usually referring to either an entire gang or the leader herself; they were gangs in the 60s-70s, and now the term tends to refer mainly to fashion inspired by them. Many “common signifiers” of this trend are bright hair and modified school uniforms (cut, decorated, etc).

Many fictional Japanese delinquents share design similarities with Surge, such as “excessive piercings and jewellery” and spiked hair.

Tails the Fox – Japanese(?) / Kitsune

I put a question mark here because Tails’s coding isn’t specifically on Japanese culture, but on a very specific aspect of its mythology. Tails is very clearly based upon a Kitsune.

Kitsune are mythological foxes with the ability to shapeshift; they have been portrayed in different myths as tricksters and/or guardians. The kitsune are noted for having multiple tails; they are said grow a tail every hundred years, growing up to nine tails. When they reach a thousand years of age, instead of growing a new tail, they ascend to the heavens. The kitsune are notable for their shapeshifting and ability to create illusions.

Tails’s second tail is clearly a reference to the kitsune legend, but while he relies more on technology than magic, there are some suspicious magical incidents around Tails; in Sonic Battle, his attack consists of summoning a giant hand to hit you with. @birdsareblooming pointed out to me that in Sonic: Lost World, when Tails stops pretending to be roboticized, his eye color literally shifts from gray to blue, possibly as a reference to the shapeshifting.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), the illusion power is referenced with Tails’s “Miles Multiplier,” which he uses to summon holographic copies of himself and others.

If you look on Tails’s desktop, you can also see something entitled “Kitsune” is running– @khamomile-kitty has informed me that it says Arms.Kitsune as a reference to Tyson Hesse’s early parody comic, Hedgehog the Sonic. You can see the file on the bottom left of his screen, though this isn’t a great pic lol.

There’s also the fact he shares many parallels with Infinite, who has the regular kitsune powers of illusion. Jackals are also very close on the family tree to foxes.

Another interesting thing is Marine– her being Blaze’s dimension’s Tails is interesting, as she is likely not a raccoon but a tanuki. She looks much more similar to a real tanuki, and in mythology tanuki and kitsune tend to be enemies with similar powersets. Speaking of Tanuki– Tails is also the first to be suspicious of Dodon Pa, a canon tanuki. He says specifically, “There’s something about this Tanuki I just don’t trust.”

Is he a kitsune in canon or is this just a reference to Japanese mythology? Pre-SGW Archie Comics gives Tails regular fox parents, so his tail seems to be a canon mutation there. However, every other canon has Tails completely oblivious to his past, seeming to not know his parents and likely having been abandoned. In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, for example, he has no memory of his parents and just says he’s “been alone for a long time” and is confused at the fact not everyone has two tails. So honestly, it’s completely unknown whether he’s a canon kitsune or simply coded.

Whisper the Wolf – Japanese

Whisper’s coding is very specific: her mask and her eyes. Whisper’s mask was chosen from a character customization option in Sonic Forces, and was specifically inspired by Japanese Kabuki masks. (Kabuki is a traditional Japanese dance-drama form known for its elaborate costuming, makeup, and masks.)

Whisper’s eyes being almost always closed is partially inspired by traditional depictions of kitsunes with “those iconic squinty-closed eyes.” (See Tails’s section for more kitsune information.) Sega of Japan approved her design as wolves serve the same roles as kitsune in older Japanese folklore.

Vector the Crocodile – Black American

Vector has had quite a bit of black coding over the years, in both positive and negative ways.

Vector is given an appearance shared with/stereotypical of a lot of Black American musicians, particularly in the rapper and hip-hop categories– specifically, his gold chain jewelry, leather clothing, and wireless headphones, esp their positioning in his models. As Vector is a musician, they definitely chose this specific musican-attire for him for a reason. Also, right now, his current English voice actor is Keith Silverstein, a black man.

A lot of Vector’s personality could be read as stereotypical, and at the same time those personality traits could be seen as inverted depending on the source material: he could fall into the “bossy overconfident” stereotype, or that could be seen as subverted due to the fact he is actually competent at his job. He could fall into the “money-hungry” and/or “always poor” trope, or this trait could be seen as relatable due to all of us hating landlords and rent with a passion. He could be “will do anything for money” or he could be presented as someone with strong morals who will always do what is right.

In some media he is seen as hotheaded and aggressive (”Angry Black Man”), while in others he keeps a cool head in times of danger and takes care of his team. You could see him as a “massive flirt” or as just someone who happens to be head-over-heels in love with Vanilla. Hell, his loud music interest could be seen as joking about Black music being “too loud,” or it could be seen as him, you know, just enjoying music!

All this depends on the medium. I don’t feel educated enough on the subject to make a call as to whether he’s a positive or negative stereotype overall, though I think I can say with certainty that Penders’ writing of him in the Archie comics was racist as hell. As @thankskenpenders explained in her article, “Vector was the jive-talking comic relief character. He was obnoxious, he was dim-witted, he was crude, he’d randomly bring up rap music. Master Zik the Zeti – Chinese

Zik’s appearance and characterization are based upon early Chinese poets, who are given a lot of respect in their society, as Zik is given respect among the Zeti.

Zik can definitely fall into the Inscrutable Oriental trope, with his “reserved and stoic” personality. He is also part of the Old Master trope (though he is a villainous rather than heroic character, as is traditional), which tends to intersect with the Magical Asian trope in martial arts stories, most famously in America in The Karate Kid; this inspiration can be seen in most of Zik’s calm dialogue and past as Zavok’s mentor, and the emphasis on his position as a powerful master. His hair is likely a reference to the stereotypical Fu Manchu moustache, and his entrance music is stylized after traditional Chinese music.

Zik also spends his semi-retirement in the garden he tends; this could potentially be a reference to Chinese gardens, which are very important in Chinese literature and philosophy. His game profile also mentions he likes to water his Bonsai tree; while the Bonsai is Japanese, it is derived from traditional Chinese penjing art.

Two characters appear every month in surprising outfits and situations! Let's enjoy Ogiri together with illustrations that will make your imagination run wild!

This time, Rouge, who is working on ikebana in a dignified kimono, and Omega, who is wearing a hakama, are appearing, looking on with awe! What is Rouge's purpose in arranging steel flowers beautifully?

What kind of lines or narration would you use?

You can style it based on the atmosphere and world view of the two of you in the game, or you can create a bold arrangement! In the example, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to express the very unique instructions...but it's OK to use such free-spirited jokes!

Act9: “Just like me”

...Once upon a time in the Warring States era.

An evil light emitted by a sinister iron ark that flew from the sky. What bursts forth from the red-purple light is the ``Karakurihana'', an iron ayakashi.

The sharp leaves cut through armor, and the buds of fiery flowers sprinkle hellfire... The folk grasses of the world are terrified by the raging Karakuri flowers.

The only person who can control the turmoil of Karakurihana is the most honorable and powerful warrior...his name is Omega.

The founder, Omega, found ``beauty'' in the life of a flower that single-mindedly seeks a deadly fight, and gave it life as a mechanical samurai.The founder, Omega, named it ``Senka.''

This is the beginning of the ``Omega style of Senkado'', where Senka compete against each other and the winner is considered to be the true beauty.

And the time is modern...

Omega-style Senka Arrangement boasts a history of hundreds of years.

Due to the severity of the training, not a single disciple has yet appeared... Among the many disciples is an up-and-coming bat beauty, Rouge the Bat. ....?

"That's it! It's a violation to have three layers of heavy weapons!"

``Senkado begins with every human being, and there is no violation or foul play on the battlefield.''

Rouge's Senka can do nothing against the rain of bullets fired from Omega's Senka.

Omega's Senka is overwhelming as it continues its onslaught with an abundance of firearm-type contraption flowers. With a final blow of the sharp leaf, Rouge's Senka is cut in two. The winner was decided easily.

Rouge's Senkado begins and ends with beauty.

Dressed in a gorgeous kimono herself, she gives instructions to Senka one after another and fights brilliantly as one human flower, so that her clothes don't wear out in the slightest after the match. That's her style.

Now, among the Omega-style disciples, there was no one who could compete with Rouge, but all they could do was scatter their flowers and leaves in front of Omega... Today's practice match also had a disastrous result.

Perhaps unable to see Rouge depressed, Omega pulls out a pair of scissors that emit a strong glow from his pocket.

"Disclose mission rewards"

"that's......!"

It is the ``Vajra Stone Flower Scissors'' that are awarded only to those who have passed on.

Rouge's real goal is to obtain these scissors. This was the driving force behind all her efforts.

The sparkle of the large diamond on the handle...how beautiful. I can't help but sigh.

"Be even more diligent!"

Rouge regained her energy for a moment when she saw the rare treasure, but Omega's words brought her back to reality and her shoulders slumped again.

......A trudging walk home in the twilight.

Every day of training, I have put in an unprecedented amount of effort for the sake of scissors... Even though I keep running, the goal is still getting farther and farther away. Rouge let out a huge sigh of despair, but suddenly stopped as she felt something strange.

Yes, right now, I'm very unconventional. What are you so serious about?

She stared up at the moon for a few seconds or minutes... Rouge let out a short sigh and smiled mischievously.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have it in a beautiful way, just like me?”

A few moments later. On a different note, there is Kougyokuen, a fabric made of mechanical flowers that was once built by sealing off the place where the ark from heaven crashed.

There, Omega was seen firing heavy weapons and cutting down the flowers, and Rouge was supporting him.

＜＜Zugagagagaga...! >>

Kougyokuen is not just a ``karakuri flower production area''. It is also an isolation facility that confines the ferocious Karakurihana, and requires periodic ``thinning.''

In exchange for her help, Rouge was allowed to see the scissors kept in the back again. The purpose is nothing more than a preview of storage security.

"Incineration! Cutting down! Karakuri flowers are eliminated!"

As Omega knocks down the attacking Karakurihana one after another, Rouge can't help but smile when she sees his Senkadou.

And we arrived at the innermost part of Kogyokuen...

There, the coveted pair of scissors was enshrined in a covered but wind-swept gazebo, shining brightly.

An overwhelming presence that does not fade even in the dark. The blade, which is transparent like ice, diffuses the slightest light and shines in rainbow colors. When Rouge instinctively reaches for the scissors that are left unprotected...

Hidden Senka placed on both sides of the scissors are activated! In an instant, the ivy grew and covered the scissors.

"Protected by strict security"

“Hmm.”

Rouge looked impressed, but from her point of view, this kind of security was playing tricks on children. It seemed like it would be easy to break through. Even on her way home after leaving Omega, Rouge continues to walk with her, grinning. Enough security checks already. At that moment when I thought, "She's already going to sneak in tonight..."

This time, the hardships I had gone through and the frustration of losing to Omega were now welling up in my heart.

At the very beginning of the opening, Rouge's Senka releases smokescreen seeds and obstructs visibility! At the same time, take a defensive stance and prepare for Omega's onslaught.

"Smoke screen jamming detected. No problems."

Omega's Senka pays no heed to this and rains down suppression fire from the sky.

Rouge's Senka endures through the smoke screen, but is definitely exhausted. But...the moment the smoke cleared, Omega was shocked by the sight before her eyes.

There were two Senka of Rouge...one of them was holding the "Vajra Stone Flower Scissors" high in the sky.

“Soreha!?”

"Security at Kougyokuen is for personal use only... You read that right! The treasure is Itadaki♪"

At the very beginning of the episode, Rouge separated Senka under the cover of that smoke screen, and instructed her clones using flying Karakurihana to steal the scissors.

"Rekai, fun...!"

Omega blinks at the unexpected event. An instant love was born there.

＜＜Gakkiin! >>

Rouge's Senka's powerful blow pierces Omega's Senka's vital point, inflicting a fatal wound.

"Unacceptable! Violation of match regulations! Foul!"

"Oh? Once the match started, there were no violations or fouls, right?"

Immediately after that, her two Senka flew with leaves and merged in the air. If you hold the scissors in the upper position, you will be able to capture Omega's Senka within range.

"Do whatever you want and get everything you want...! That's my Omega style!"

The next thing Omega saw was Rouge's dignified straight sitting position staring at the battlefield with an undisturbed demeanor... Rouge's Senka with her back cutting Omega's Senka in two with a single blow of her scissors. It was a brave figure.

"...Stunning."

A quiet dojo. ...A new kind of "beauty" was born here.

"Rouge, license pass and pass."

"I did it! I have to come! I like Iemoto who understand what I'm talking about♪"

Rouge plays like a little girl with scissors and a license letter in hand. The scissors had been stolen during a match, but now they were purely hers.

However, after achieving her dream, Rouge also realized that there was no longer any reason for her to stay here.

"Well, I don't care about titles or anything like that...If I get what I'm getting, I'll be too happy to go to such a seedy dojo."

Rouge muttered that and started walking away, but as if reading her thoughts, Omega took something out of her pocket.

"Second mission reward. Red stone flower scissors..."

The fiery shine of the ruby captivated Rouge's heart... She quickly turned around and instantly approached Omega, saying:

"...Tell me the details."

The "Legendary Seven Scissors" passed down in the Omega style.

Rouge, the new master teacher, took on the responsibility of sealing Kougyokuen, and while she and Omega sometimes struggled, they continued to improve each other's beauty until they had all the scissors in their hands... ..

This is the beginning of the golden age of Omega-style Senkado.

"Following the red ball..."

"The Senka battle was fun, Tails! Rouge and Omega were so cool! They have to be like that!"

Sonic was in a good mood as he watched the unexpected match from behind the bushes in Kogyokuen. Tails, who loves mecha, will also follow.

"That's right, Sonic! By the way, 'Karakurihana' seems to be a strange version of Eggman's mecha, but how does it understand its creator's orders? ...And more importantly... ...!”

Realizing an important fact, Tails returns to his serious expression and shows Sonic the readings on the energy detector in his hand.

It is a mysterious stone that has the power to influence the brains of living things, implant a powerful virtual reality, and twist the world. It was lost after the previous battle with Eggman's army and was supposed to have disappeared from this world...

"Energy is being emitted from this botanical garden in all directions. I'm sure there will be such a huge reaction in the aftermath all over the world...I mean..."

Sonic jumped up and landed on the Ark in the center of Kogyokuen, then grinned and continued:

"This ark is the epicenter of the incident...is that so?"

An ominous wind blows through, rustling the leaves of the contraption flower beneath their feet, and Tails, who was already investigating inside the ark, continues.

"Yeah! This ark was also a strange transformation of Eggman's battleship! I found a part that looked like a capacitor, but it had a powerful energy reaction left behind. I'm sure it was activated during the previous battle. I think the Phantom Ruby's energy was still being charged...I 'm sure Eggman made the most of it in some way!

Tails excitedly raises his head all at once. But, but..., I thought, my shoulders slumped again.

“However, this situation that is currently occurring in the world is a little different from virtual reality, and there is no way such a disparate situation could occur with a single activation... There are still so many things I don't understand.Hmm, sorry. ......”

Tails crouched down with his head in his hands.

Sonic couldn't help but feel tired, thinking that he had gotten used to sitting down so his skirt wouldn't get dirty, but when he jumped down from the top of the ark and sat next to Tails, he patted him on the shoulder and cheered him up with a smile. Masu.

With that said, Sonic quickly stood up and clicked his heels, and Tails also hurriedly got ready. Why is it that I always feel happy when I'm with Sonic?

I'm sure this incident will be resolved successfully...

Confidence that rises up even though there is no solid basis for it. Tails' expression was no longer gloomy as he enthusiastically started running after Sonic.

"Now wait, Eggman! No matter where you're hiding, I won't let you escape!"

Ames (She/Her, trans lesbian) - I think Amy presents p stealth! I think she knew she was trans from a young age and she's been presenting femininely since she was very very little. I made a post joking abt silly gender differences in sth (no back quills, small nose, etc) and I headcanon that those traits come from Amy being half-echidna so its like. ajdjsndnd gender win. The traits you were born with also coincide with hedgehog mobian gender binary??JFJSNFNN

I don't think Amy keeps her trans identity a complete secret, she loves being trans and she's proud of how she's tested fate and made her life her own, but I also think it does play a role in how she navigates her personal/romantic relationships (comphet to trans lesbian is what I was thinking of?)

Rouge: (She/Her, transfem lesbian also) - I talked abt Rouge and gave her a silly little backstory in that one post but I'll go over it again a little here: I think Rouge grew up pretty isolated in a small village with her family. She felt very trapped in the ideas that she felt like she had to follow the footsteps in. She felt like she was a side character in her own life because she's always had to ask for permission and think of the family's sleezy gem store/pawn shop before her own wants and needs. Landing that government job somehow was her ticket to finally spreading her wings and flying freeeee baby. She knew there was somth about herself and the way she dressed, talked and looked that didn't quite fit her, and although she didn't have a word for it, she assumed a new identity while working for G.U.N. and went like. full throttle on her transition. She didn't want anybody from her old village to recognize her. She's not listening to their complaints and desires anymore. She lives for herself, now. I think she has some trust issues relating to her past experiences which makes her hold onto Shadow and Omega so closely, and something about them also being queer brings them even closer to her. Can you tell Rouge has been rotating the fastest in my head

Guess it’s time I tackled this, huh? I’m late to the party!

Short answer: I love the game AND the Shadow/Amy interactions! They’re wonderful! I’ll be putting spoilers under the cut. If you haven’t played it yet, I’d definitely recommend it. Great art, great story, fun gameplay. It’s free on Steam and it’ll probably only take you a few hours, so there’s nothing to lose!

I never would have thought to make a Sonic murder mystery game, but it fits super well. The characters are really well-written. It’s been a long time since I played a Sonic game and felt everyone was portrayed well. I wasn’t even fully satisfied with Frontiers in that regard tbh, but this game nailed all of them. It helps that with Sonic being, uh...preoccupied, we get to see side characters interacting with each other for once. Blaze conspiring with Rouge? Yes, please! Knuckles throwing a fit when he loses to Vector in a video game? Wonderful!

But Shadamy is the standout. I couldn’t be happier with how these two were handled! This is exactly the kind of Shadow/Amy interaction I’ve waited years for, and I know I’m not alone in that. Some people have started shipping them because of this game!

I think what I like most about it is that this is the exact pattern I often use when I write them falling in love. He does something really sweet and dedicated for her...

...makes bad excuses to try and downplay it...

(PFFT WHAT SOCIAL STATUS??? Even Tails is laughing)

He remembers something about Amy and goes to the trouble of doing something nice for her even if he has to embarrass himself in the process, something he wouldn’t be caught dead doing for anyone else...

She sees right through his excuses because she knows how sweet he is. She literally stutters and blushes. Just look how smitten she is!

...and then she asks him out because she wants to spend more time with him.

Sure, she’s probably thinking of it platonically, but it’s worth noting that this is the exact approach she’s taken to try to get dates in the past.

If she wants to spend time with a love interest someone, she’ll make it happen, regardless of their hesitation.

And he agrees. He hesitates either because it’s a boy band or maybe because concerts aren’t his thing, but he says yes because it’s her. The proof is right there: he goes through all this for her specifically. He dresses up in a glorified Starbucks outfit--let’s be real, we were all thinking it--joins in for a silly game, something that’s been out of character for him since the beginning...

and agrees to go to a party despite repeatedly rejecting invitations to such things in the past. Rouge makes it clear that’s the norm:

And even when he shows up to Sonic’s birthday, he’s late and ignores everyone, including Sonic himself:

But he goes to Amy’s birthday, makes sure to get her a thoughtful gift, and even socializes with the others. He’s in a pretty good mood, even showing an unusual amount of patience while she’s accusing him.

He doesn’t snap back at her or anything the way he normally would with others. How many people could get away with interrupting Shadow the hedgehog without getting an earful? He really is more patient with her than he is with anyone else.

Shadow’s a blunt, stubborn guy, and he won’t agree to something if he doesn’t want to. But he’ll go to a crowded boy band concert because Amy’s just worth it to him. Different rules for Amy. And if he keeps it up, she’s bound to notice.

That’s how I write them, at least, and now it’s in a semi-official Sonic game, too. I couldn’t be happier. <3 Hopefully Sega will see the positive response and put these two together more often; people really loved this, regardless of who they ship. Platonic or otherwise, I’d love to see more.

Either way, rest assured that this interaction will be finding its way into headcanons here and there from now on. And I may or may not have a proper story in the works for it 👀

Oh, and the kicker?

Tails totally ships it. He didn’t have to wink like that, but he sees what’s up. He’s a clever kid. That’s another point for the “Tails is on Team Amy” trend, and more fuel for the Everyone Ships Shadamy tag.

Cute Vicious Headcanons:

Because sometimes I just want my faves to be happy for once. Spoiler warning for both Vicious and Vengeful, and a warning for a brief mention of panic attacks and religious trauma!

- While Victor, Sydney, Mitch, and Dol never returned to Merit until the events of Vengeful, Dominic would often come stay with them for long periods of time before he got his job at EON. These were usually comparable to vacations where they would hang out and Victor would adjust his grip on Dom’s nerves, but one time it was specifically to help him make headway on his alcoholism; between Mitch clearing their safehouse of alcohol, Sydney distracting him when cravings came, and Victor dampening triggering sensations and watching diligently to make sure he couldn’t slip away to a bar, he was eventually able to make progress on his addiction. Afterwards, the group was careful to alert Victor ahead of time before Dominic would visit so he could hide his stash or arrange to drink it elsewhere.

- Victor loves music and will unashamedly dance around if a song he likes is playing over the radio; if someone's watching he’ll be a little more reserved unless theatrics is the point (If it’s a villain song or he’s in the mood he’ll usually perform to it, as he likes the attention and it makes him feel like he’s in a movie), but if he’s alone he goes all out. Think Dr. Robonik’s dance in the Sonic movie- he’ll shimmy and sing all throughout the room/house if given the chance. Sometimes the others will join in for a proper performance; it’s a great way to get Victor to thaw out a bit because it reminds him of many hours in his youth spent happily dancing and singing around the empty Vale estate.

- For one of Victor’s birthdays, Mitch helped Sydney make a large framed print of a page of one of Victor’s favorite anatomy tomes that they had carefully blacked out into a somewhat sappy poem about family. Sydney also took a book chapter about lightning and made a surprisingly ornate blackout poem out of it that was supposed to about Victor. To this day, Victor treasures both gifts and considers them the best things he’s ever gotten.

- Victor, Sydney, Mitch, and (when he’s there) Dominic take turns picking what to do for Halloween. Typically Sydney convinces everyone to go somewhere in costume if they don’t outright trick-or-treat, but the group’s theme is left up to whoever’s in charge of the festivities. Victor usually finds some way to be the villain and will do everything in his power to keep up his all-black color scheme; his favorite costume was when he went out dressed as the reboot version of Cruella (it was a Disney Villains theme- Sydney was Hades, Mitch was Shere Khan, and Dominic was Diaval from the Maleficent movies). Sydney also once designed original supervillain/superhero costumes for them; to Victor’s chagrin, Mitch helped her make them and he was forced to participate in going to a Halloween festival dressed like comic book character. While he complained about it at the time, he secretly appreciated the gesture and thought it was cool, though he’d rather die than admit it.

- Mitch calls Dol his “wingman” because he has been hit on multiple times by other dog owners at the park while walking him. While he always turns them down, he finds the attention flattering, especially since he’s so used to people judging him for his appearance.

- Dominic is the resident “sidekick” of the group, as he’s always down for mischief, no matter whose instigating it. He’s a bit of a “follower” personality, which makes him everyone’s first choice when they need backup for something. He’s helped Victor sneak out multiple times, participated on all three sides of a Victor-Mitch-Sydney prank war, often helps Sydney with some of Mitch’s homemade homework even when he’s technically not supposed to, and once helped Mitch slip cough medicine in Victor’s water when he came down with a cold and refused to do anything about it. He’s also loyal to each cause and won’t rat out whoever he’s helping for any reason- even Victor’s threats aren’t enough to break his nerve.

- If they get in a serious argument, Mitch will absolutely pull the “breadwinner” card on Victor to keep him from doing something stupid.

- Alternatively, Sydney will absolutely pull the “I revived you from the dead” card to keep Victor from doing something stupid.

- Victor likes to call himself a “necromancee” and affectionately calls Sydney his necromancer. He thinks it’s funny and once introduced them like that to a curious barista.

- Victor originally did not get along with most of his teachers in college, as they all in some way reminded him of his parents and he just generally resented their authority. Once he arrived, Eli did a lot of networking in college for Victor and was able to improve his standing with several professors by either joining Victor whenever he had to interact with them and smoothing out any animosity or by talking with to them and spinning his rude behavior as simply Victor being shy, blunt, or introverted. Victor never outright thanked him for the help, but he did make more of an effort to play nice with the instructors after that.

- Sydney likes to draw new tattoos on Mitch with Sharpies whenever she can nab one from Victor’s stash. Victor once offered to do the same to Mitch before they went out on a supply run; Mitch was pleased until they arrived at the store and he realized that Victor had just used him to write a shopping list.

- A year or two after Eli’s arrest, Victor asks Mitch to help him find a tattoo place so he can get something in remembrance of their previous confrontation- and secretly because he sometimes misses Eli and wants to have something physical to act as a reminder. Mitch is thrilled and helps him find the perfect location, design, and parlor. He also stays with him for the whole thing, since Victor ends up mildly nervous while letting the artist touch him as they apply it. It all culminates in a small tattoo that reads “Always and forEver,” with the marked out lines crossed out like a blackout poem and just a little bit of those letters visible so the words underneath are still understandable. He gets it put over his back scar where the final bullet went through. Post-Vengeful, when Victor is away from the group, he gets three more; a flying, cawing raven behind his ear for Mitch, a trail of footprints running up his spine that fade into nothing for Dominic, and a tiny sparrow clutching a thread and anatomically accurate heart over his actual heart for Sydney.

- Dave (the guy Victor killed in Vicious) and Stell were very close buddies, with Dave looking up to Stell as a mentor figure and Stell finding him somewhere between a best friend and the son he never had. This is more of a semi-AU than a headcanon, but a concept to consider: Sydney snuck back to revive him again during Victor’s time being dead (she was careful not to let Dave see her, and he was frankly too spooked to notice; it was ruled a very miraculous recovery), and while he immediately quit the police force after that he and Stell kept in touch.

- During Eli’s time at EON, Stell would sometimes help Eli out of panic attacks that were triggered by various religious “slip-ups,” such as forgetting verses or not stopping to pray at certain times (I imagine Eli has some scrupulosity-adjacent tendencies). Because Eli’s body maintained constant homeostasis, he didn’t have things like hunger, exhaustion, or even fainting to help shake him out of it, so he would sometimes spend days kneeling in his cell, refusing to stop praying over and over for forgiveness until he felt he’d been made clean again- which never came on its own. Stell, who while not religious grew up going to church and having a religious sister, eventually began to come down to Eli’s cell to try and talk him through his attacks, which would usually work once he was able to break Eli out of the loop so he could convince himself of his covenant again and get back to work. He also did enough digging into Eli’s background to recognize some heavy religious trauma, so he eventually dragged up enough sympathy to get him a Bible in the hopes that it would give Eli the tools to pull himself out of these attacks. It surprisingly worked, though Stell still found himself occasionally having to reassure him when Eli got particularly antsy.

- Victor has broken his “all-black-clothes” rule once, when he went with Mitch and Sydney to a very popular movie that the pair had been dying to see on opening night, despite it coming out during a time when they were under a lot of pressure to fit in. While they were perfectly content to disguise themselves, they weren’t expecting Victor to and were prepared to have to leave the theater in a hurry, only to find Victor waiting by the door in a long grey cardigan, a cream-brown sweater, and fancy wire-frame glasses so he wouldn’t stand out so much in the crowd. According to Sydney, he looked like “a cottagecore college student one decade after his graduation,” while Mitch only called it “cute;” he got his foot stomped on and most of his popcorn stolen for his commentary.

- Dominic is really creative with waking Victor up from nightmares and can usually do so without getting his pain dialed up; he’s figured out that Victor’s power needs direct line-of-sight to work, so he’s taken to either poking Victor with a broom from around the corner or tossing a backpack or book over the edge of the couch/bed/chair he’s sleeping on before ducking behind it. Victor always complains about his methods, but Dominic is just glad he can escape with little more than his hair standing on end.

- Victor likes to have self-care days with Sydney; he’s always been fond of pampering himself and will even dabble in a bit of makeup from time to time. Sydney enjoys it too, as the pair will usually take over the tv while they try out new eyeshadow, do each other’s nails, etc. Victor also likes using an occasional bath bomb, as he’ll take one of his novels in the bath to work on it for a bit while he either stews in the calm or in thoughts of revenge- whatever he’s feeling up to that day.

- Mitch and Victor once arrived back to their hotel to find both Dominic and Sydney a) dressed in all black and wearing two of Victor’s coats, b) wearing a frankly ridiculous amount of black eyeshadow under their eyes, and c) with red marker smeared on their faces like blood. Turns out they were having a contest to see who could do the best Victor impression. Mitch voted for Dominic and Victor- who was too tired to protest at this point- voted for Sydney, so the deciding challenge was to see who could rant about how much they hated Eli. Sydney won and was able to keep the rant going for several minutes, with Mitch eventually having to stop her once she just started cursing him out.

Finally, a Faye Moreau questionaire for the @sonic-oc-showdown!

✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?

At first, it was just "Faye the Fox," because she was an independent character. Then I thought of giving her a family, so I wanted to have a family name, so I chose "Moreau*," a surname meaning "black-haired" in French. I chose "Faye" because it was a very soft-sounding name and I liked it.

[*I looked it up again to double-check and it actually means dark-skinned. Now that doesn't make any sense! Faye's family is very very white. One of the very few times I actively make the choice to white-code my OCs. There are reasons for this.]

🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

Faye is 8 years old, same as Tails.

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

No.

🍕 - What is their favorite food?

Grandma's meatloaf!

💼 - What do they do for a living?

She is a child and does not work, but she does help Mother with chores in the basement sometimes.

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?

Faye loves dollmaking and taxidermy. She also loves to play pretend and make up stories, as any child does.

She has a genuine talent for dollmaking and sewing in general. She has a nack for the tiniest of details, probably in half thanks to her abnormally small hands.

Faye loves playing in the garden and collecting materials for her dolls. She doesn't like doing chores for the house, though. Or fighting 1-on-1.

Nope! This clay figure of her is her oldest design--

She still retains most of her features, but this "Beta Faye" has an oversized bow instead of a tiny hat, a ribbonless black bow on a white bib, and no purple trimming on her black dress at all! She also has black ear furnishings and is missing her heart-shaped ear tips.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

Sonic Forces and Little Nightmares. One of my first fangame ideas was a horror game inspired by LN. I still have a game in mind for Faye, but it looks very different compared to how it used to be then.

Psychological horror.

💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Unlabeled. She's a little girl and hasn't been thinking about those things yet. Also, with the way her family reproduces, she never needs to worry about boys.

Quite a few, it's hard to keep track. She's the youngest, though.

Mother can be quite strict and a little mean, but she's nice to her. Mostly.

I don't know what it is about Sonic Dash, but it holds the power to make Silver into a complete Main Thought for me if that makes sense, lol. It managed to make him my favourite again after a good 2.5 years of not even thinking about him simply through playing it, and right now it's Chrono Silver that's occupying my mind rent free (I unlocked him the other day).

I know all those dressed-up character skins are just alts with no deeper story to them, but I am incredibly curious about what Chrono Silver's backstory could encompass. As I envisioned it myself, I like the idea of him being part of some order of time cops or something similar, that travel to different timelines in order to ensure the events there do not get altered and commence "as they should". Maybe villains in the future have turned their attention to causing chaos and mayhem in such a way, attempting to alter time itself to get a win? It's kind of what Silver does in Rivals 1 and 2 too, but this would be a whole organisation working to keep the peace as opposed to him going solo.

And on Chrono Silver himself, I liked the idea of him being a rookie or newbie in training: specifically one who is tremendously strong with his psychic powers, but still relatively unskilled in the art of covertly travelling to other timelines and apprehending villains there without the local populace noticing. Thus, the moment he notices something is amiss with a timeline, he runs off to solve it by himself... and ends in Sonic's era and a whole lot of trouble. Sonic and friends would have their normal history with fighting Eggman, though, so this doesn't catch them off-guard as much as Silver was taught, haha! And they'll be working hard to get him home again and stop that villain while they're at it. Food for thought!

So one thing that bothered me about the Skyrim Romance Mod was the Grand Crystal Ball, in that such an event couldn't be held in Skyrim, especially with the civil war. (Not that a Jarl's longhouse palace would have a ballroom anyways when they're more content with mead halls for feasts.) However, I haven't played Oblivion or Morrowind because of motion sickness- do you think a Barbie princess ball like that could feasibly be held in Cyrodil or Morrowind?

I completely agree with you. The dresses and the ball itself are entirely anachronistic for Skyrim. I raise you: if Elisif can barely afford to protect Haafingar during the war effort, then how can she afford a giant ballroom fiasco like that? And who are these guests, anyway? People from neighboring High Rock? They certainly don't strike me as any kind of local nordic aristocrats.

The Grand Crystal Ball has the Falk Firebeard Stamp of Disapproval on it, I'll tell you that!

Do I think this kind of gilded gala could appear in Morriwnd or Cyrodiil? Yes . . . and no. In Morrowind, definitely not like this. I imagine in Imperial Mournhold back during the Third Era when everything was "honkydory", there were dances and balls. Not like this one by any means. I'm referring to the kind of social and political events that would have been more common amongst the elites of say, the British West Indies or in an English manor (I like regency fiction and this idea is based nearly entirely off of that). Those sorts of events that advance people's social, political, and business careers.

That is exactly why I think they're right at home in Cyrodiil (and High Rock, but we're not here to talk about that). Cyrodiil is home to counts, countesses, lords, ladies, and other nobles and aristocrats. It is also the cosmopolitan heart of the Empire. Back to my regency reference, picture it like this: a bunch of rich and influential people want to further their own politics and expand their purses while sucking it up to the royals to gain MORE wealth and influence. They also really like showing off what they have. Is there a war on? Time to blame the politicians and go to Lady so-and-so's soiree or dinner party or assembly or—

So to answer your question, I think balls and other such engagements have a place in certain parts of Tamriel, chiefly in Imperial or "civilized" centers, but not a one would look like the Grand Crystal Ball. It's too gaudy and the dresses look like Victorian era rejects.

This is why I am completely overhauling the Grand Crystal Ball in my fanfic, Keeping Count. It's out of place. In the mod, it serves to fuel a princess fantasy where her knight in shining armor sweeps her off to a magical ball where she gets to dance in a Cinerella dress before a dashing rogue comes to steal her away. That is what it's there for. It does nothing else. Trying to fit it into the rest of Skyrim is impossible because it is so sonically different from the rest of the game's tone.

To incorporate it in my fic — do you want spoilers? — I'm scaling it down to a small party held at the Breton High Commission in Solitude, a place entirely fabricated by me in an attempt to expand a wider awareness of interconnected world politics. We'll actually get a little more of Leara's political background as she will have to explain some things to Bishop, who is an absolute idiot and knows nothing about politics or diplomacy. Because he's stupid.

Who knows? I might even try to turn Casavir into a half-decent character. But then, where's the fun in that?

Gosh, the whole thing really would be better if Leara and Ulfric had a dance-off. Or if Brynjolf stole Bishop's lifestuff.

Other characters include but not limited to:

Amy! My beloved, she borrows from her classic design here. Goes to their highschool, got a fucked up relationship with attention, and a messy relationship with her mom and the concept of beauty. Her mom is the pretty teacher from the tenth episode of Yugioh. Season Zero. She and Nikki have been friends for years. They used to date but then realized they were both aro and went back to being friends, although recently they've been sliding into a sorta qpr. In Anzu's role.

Anton. Yes, he's here. Anton is like a lizard also from the manga. He's a bully who wants to date Amy himself there, but here he's a badnatured punk who always rebels against authority. Anton and Nikki did a group project once, where Nikki dropped a important piece of their assignment so it broke, and then Anton got them in trouble by arguing with their teacher. Now Anton thinks Nikki did it on purpose cuz he's a goody two shoes who doesn't like Anton, and Anton wants him to toughen up and confront people directly. Nikki fundamentally doesn't get Anton and how he works and is scared of him, and they dislike each other as a result. To be clear, Anton is still in the wrong here, but it's not out and out bullying like in the anime. Anton's just looming ominously and at worst pushing Nikki back a few steps. Anton is in the role of Jonouchi/Joey Wheeler.

Metal! Trans metal trans metal. send post. She's a transfer student who got here last month. Metal is in the combined roles of Honda and Miho. She looks up to the school administration and student patrol and is considering trying to find her place there. It is important to me that you know she wears big poofy dresses and bows. When her classmates picture her, it's her standing in a corner staring at everybody (with her autistic murderous eyes). She looks less like Sonic design wise than og Metal Sonic. She considers herself a Robot Hedgehog but not a hedgehog. She like stares ominously at Anton when he's hassling Nikki and maybe puts a hand in front of him to stop him, but doesn't otherwise intervene because she's mostly doing it on principle.

Maria and Shadow are fine! Maria was raised underground w/ Shadow and took over the company when Gerald got shot. They take Kaiba and his brothers place. Maria cut ties with the military and rebranded as entertainment. She built a theme park that's like the only place she can be safely. She always sits in sunlight. Shadow is Maria's little brother and he's completely devoted to her to the point of signing away his autonomy, but Maria wants to give him the world and would never dare to take away his free will like that because it's like her strongest belief. She's trying to push Shadow to more stuff on his own without her. Sonic knows about the irony of playing Shadow Games with Shadow and respects him. He goes "from one shadow to another, huh? Yeah. I get it." They have the millenium rod. Maria would never use it on Shadow but Gerald used it on both of them. Maria uses it on other people and tries to keep that knowledge from Shadow but he knows more than she'd like. Shadow is the one who actually duels. Too risky for Maria, considering all the things that could go wrong, and Shadow was literally built for this kind of thing, but she stills hates it. That's her specialest little guy he should be safe at all times :( Eggman takes the place of Pegasus. He wields the millenium eye (a single eye is a small price to pay for power) and believes strongly in the ideals of intellect and the human mind over nature. He was actually born after Maria, but when he was younger he accidentally threw himself into the Duel Monsters Dimension where time passes quicker. He was missing for like a year and declared dead. When he came back out as an adult he assumed a new identity, and with the instructions for how to summon duel monsters as well as a map to the eye in hand, started up this whole Duel Monsters card game business. He's rich now and able to work on his own projects, but he's stuck managing his monster empire and forced to be reclusive to avoid people looking too closely at his past. He heard of Maria when she built the theme park and was like, "Darn, I can't believe she got there first. Also, it feels strange that I'm older than here now. Back to villainy." He wants to collect the other millenium items to remove the limitations on his power and conquer the earth. Knuckles :) I like him. He takes the role of the Ishtar family. Idk too much about them to be honest, but the scale and guardianship of a sacred duty suits him perfectly. Ok ok. It's time to talk about the reason I came up with this in the first place.

*snapcube dub voice* Nikki the Hedgehog is a character from the Sonic Manga. He's my funny little guy! He's an anxious kid who wishes he were brave and isn't amazing at anything. But his big deal is that whenever him or his friends are in trouble, he transforms into Sonic. Sonic then effortlessly takes care of the issue and turns back into Nikki. Nikki is not aware of this, and he doesn't remember any of it. Here things are a little different.

Nikki is a highschool student who loves reading quietly and playing instruments and solving puzzles. He's friends with Amy, but his other attempts at making friends have always failed and he's kind of lonely. The puzzle he dug up from the corners of his Uncle Chuck's diner has been with him for years and gives him a sense of purpose. He often digs it out and fiddles with the pieces to calm his mind.

One day, he brings it to school with him like he usually does. It's after class has ended for the day, so it's just him, Anton, and the transfer student. He's working on the puzzle while waiting for Amy to meet up with him, when Anton tells him it's a waste of time. This is one of the few things Nikki will even try to stand up to him over (he often wishes he were braver) and they get in an argument. The transfer student walks into the hallway and flags down a teacher, who reprimands them for arguing and threatens them with detention for Anton not adhering to the dress code and Nikki for having a personal item (schools been cracking down on them lately) that distracts other students because it's made of wait, is that gold? Amy arrives and gets the teachers attention by telling him there's a bake sale around the corner and the other staff are hanging out there. The teacher lets them off with a warning and heads out. Anton is annoyed with Metal tattling to the teacher (THAT was her name!) and Metal makes angry beeps back. Amy's mad at Anton for arguing with Yugi in the first place. (basically it's about how they relate to authority and the rules. Nikki never challenges it, Anton always challenges it even when it would be unwise, Metal follows it and believes it to good, Amy works within it. Sonic's whole deal is he challenges it and knows how to get away with it. Having magical power and experience certainly doesn't hurt though.) Some stuff happens, the teacher catches up with them to punish them for before because he wants the puzzle (it looks like it's made of gold and he can sell it.) Anton picks Nikki up and runs away, and tells him that he's responsible for this and he needs to fix it. He adds that it's a good opportunity to learn all rules are bullshit. Nikki goes home and works on the puzzle, mind racing. He needs to have a solution by the time he sees the teacher again. But while he makes progress on the puzzle, enough finish it except for a missing piece (he must have dropped it when Anton picked him up), he only resolves to Do Something. Metal finds the piece and plans to give it back to Nikki. He calls Amy and Anton and asks them to meet him at the school.

Metal is heading to Nikki's desk to drop off the puzzle piece there when she sees three people outside the window... and a looming shadow converging on them. She hops out the window. It's time. The teacher (we'll call him Haruo) is not playing around anymore. He has a fucking knife. Anton fights, receiving cuts to his arms. Metal tries to block Haruo from attacking, but can't bring herself to strike a teacher she respected, especially when the law wouldn't take her side (she's a robot) (plus she still thinks this could be de-escalated). Amy tries to do the reasonable thing and call the police and her mom, but the police are useless and her mom is out of town. Nikki says he'll hand over the puzzle, stopping the fight. Metal presses the last piece into his hands as he walks by her. Nikki stands in front of Haruo, and asks for a few seconds to finish solving it. Haruo denies it, and advances towards Nikki, hands already reaching out, but... Does Nikki...

Really, truly, want to comply with people like Haruo his whole life? Nikki places the last piece. The world turns to golden light. It's Sonic! Everybody clap and cheer for joy. The activation brought him and his focus (Haruo) to a strange distorted version of the school grounds. He may not know much, not even his own name, but he knows that it's time to play a game and he's going to win. So. Neat things about Sonic. Nikki's quills are a light blue, he wears glasses, and he has bangs. Sonic's quills are Adventure dark blue, he does not wear glasses, and he has the Eye of Horus on his forehead. His quills shift from Nikki's color to his like it's just the light that changed, or like they've always been they color but you just didn't notice. The eye of Horus glows when he feels strong negative emotion. Fun fact! Nikki wished for a friend so he wouldn't be lonely, and he wished to be brave and strong to protect people. Sonic is both of those things. Also Sonic here is sooo fun. He's doesn't remember how to play the card game so he's just making it up as he goes. He wins his first Shadow Game by taunting Haruo until Haruo broke the rules. He got his name by boasting he'd beat his opponent (different game) faster than the speed of sound. He's a hero because he breaks the rules to protect people and is always looking for a better way to do things. Sonic at first thinks nothing weird is going on and that blipping in and out of existence with half remembered context is normal. He's like, "Yeah, so these are my friends, I'm playing a card game, and my name is *squints at smudged writing on the back of hand* Nicholas." He gradually figures out that someone else is doing stuff in between those periods while he's aware, and that he's tied to the weird bling around not-his neck, and that neither the person he's possessing or his friends have any idea. Also a lot of this is strangely familiar..... (Nikki has some idea. Nikki says good night to the puzzle and tucks it in every night. Nikki thinks that whatever is happening when there's danger is a good thing that should continue without any input necessary from him. He's like "None of my business! :)" Even though it totally is.) (This doesn't continue for too long, maybe half a season at most in show terms? He does get curios and start wondering what exactly is up.)

Tails! He's the little guy. So teeny. But haha wrong, this Tails wears sunglasses and calls people "wussys" for eating mushrooms! He's primarily Sonic's friend and meets him first- wait wait. it's important that you also know Tails has a motorcyle. or a car? all of this is canon to the manga btw. okay continue. -and thinks Sonic is really cool. He's the first person Sonic can really confide in about his situation, and he does so after Tails is like: so... why are you so different when you're not on stage? and Sonic is forced to go "Very simple, that is actually not me. Easy mistake to make." Tails is a fellow tournament duelist and spends some time playing duels with Sonic, and they both improve off each other. Sonic is glad that he can look into the stands and find someone cheering for him, and Tails is glad to have a cool older duelist who doesn't look down on him and who respects his skill. Btw, Sonic's doing that fucky Yami/Yugi thing where Yami assumes Yugi's name and friendships for his own. They keep hanging out. (Sonic introduces him to the rest of the group, and Tails, the wanderer- ohh my god, galaxy brain moment. In canon, Sonic is the nomad who can't stay in one place, while Tails will always be tied to his labs and his tech and Sonic/the Tornado. In this au, Tails is the cool guy wandering from tournament to tournament, while Sonic is literally and metaphysically tied to Nikki, his friends, and the puzzle. They swapped places.- anyways yeah Tails likes having people to show off for and crash with. The importance of a place that's always safe cannot be overstated.) Tails and Sonic can really let their guard down around the other, and when they call each other brother for the first time they explode the labyrinth they were trapped in.

Okay what other items are there. Uhh. Puzzle, eye, rod, scales, ring, key, and necklace.

Tikal gets the key. She's just chilling with knuckles don't worry about the timeline. Rogue gets the ring because its abilities are perfect for a fortune seeker like her. (Wait does this mean Rogue is gonna get possesed?! NOOO)

Silver and Blaze share the duties of the necklace. I was literally sitting here trying to think of a fortune teller in all of Sonic when I was hit over the head by SILVER YOU DOOFUS

Right so I think that's everybody. Omega will show up in due time- probably with guns blazing. I honestly don't know much about the plot of Yugioh, because I just started watching season 0 of the anime. Yes I've read rewrite fics but there's a lot of stuff in the anime you guys did not fucking tell me about. I like Miho :) I think the teacher from the 10th episode is a jerk who I would not like in real life, but I'm looking at the writers skeptically because it's not a crime to be a beautiful woman and if I were in a similar situation I also would have gotten frustrated with how the people around me treated me. I like the show so far it's a lot of fun. Yugi is three apples tall. They spent all their animation budget on the shadow game. I liked when the worms killed that man. Happy Halloween everybody!
