My cherry tomato is out there trying to grow beefsteaks, the snack size bell peppers are bigger than the “giant” eggplants, the “giant eggplants” are the size of my thumb, the chamomile reseeded itself in the middle of the gosh dang summer, I somehow have a entire celery plant I have no memory of propagating and it’s outcompeting both the invasive morning glories and the “everbearing” strawberries that haven’t bloomed since May, and out of three zucchini plants I have yet to materialize a single zucchini this entire year.

We’ve clearly entered some kind of upside down parallel universe where nothing means anything anymore, but at least the un-spicy jalapenos are, in fact, as un-spicy as advertised, so it can’t be all bad. Or maybe that’s just further proof we’re living the Bad Timeline, idk at this point

#who ever heard of a zucchini plant that DIDN'T thrive to the point of zucchini-induced terror? #the Great Squash Bug Invasion may have had something to do with it #but only one plant got hit #the other two?? #I have no idea what's wrong with them #maybe a solidarity thing? #I saw some female flowers starting today so maybe by next week fingers crossed #but this cherry tomato is out here making up for it #it has a whole branch of hard green baby maters that are already half the size of my fist and no red in sight #they're bigger than the currently growing beefsteak tomato next to it #is this a cross-pollination thing? #idk and idc because I use all of them for sauce and cooking anyway #but it's still kind of hilarious #also note for the future: ichiban eggplant does NOT do well here #the poor plants are still just as small as when I bought them but infinitely sadder #the one eggplant it produced was a sad little inedible nub #idk what I did wrong #the globe ones from last year were fine #also anyone know what to do with celery seed? because uhhh.... i might have A Lot

This is my Ichiban Eggplant. I have planted several in my garden and they are loving the environment. Ichiban Eggplant produces high yields of slender fruit that have a sweet and mild flavor. They are great for grilling. We started cultivating eggplant at around 600BC. As a plant of the species nightshade, it had been feared by many early on. The fruit of the Eggplant is technically a berry with a smooth texture and a glossy skin. I am so happy to be done with the first stage of the garden this year. @khamubro & @comradb0ne both had a pass with the little Earthquake push tiller. After that it was pretty much me with a garden rake, flat shovel, leaf rake, and a 3 claw cultivator out there shaping them myself. The guys both helped with picking out plants and getting them in the ground. It’s been a while since I did any cooking liveblogs, and that’s not actually changing, but I wanted to chronicle the use of not one (black beauty eggplant), not two (Ichiban eggplant), but three (garlic) things from my garden being used in one dish.

(The dish: ratatouille, as given by an anon. I’ve made it several times since March, actually, because it’s good, easy, and a really nice work lunch)

At some point during chopping, Artemis stopped whining at my shins (he’s solar-powered and with overcast days we’ve been having, all he wants to do is cuddle) and settled down to Exist Nearby

I’ve been having a bit of burn out lately, plus a sweltering summer that stunted all the plants for a month, so I haven’t posted about my garden. Now that it’s cooled down, the pepper plants and one Goliath variety tomato plant really took off (first two pictures). The cucumber I planted as a decoy to the squash bugs also recovered and is producing cucumbers (third picture). Also started taming the oregano where I’d let it go in that bed, which bell helped watch the cutting pile (fourth picture). And finally, my ichiban eggplants are taking off, producing a lot of good sized fruits again (fifth picture, also yeah the oregano had taken up half the bed).
