no one on my dash was talking about it at all so i need to be a hater for a second i know this is a safe space so sorry in advance but Um Anyways. earlier im sure u saw jack manifold was touring michael clifford from 5sos on the dsmp and u know i still actively dislike jack from Everything with april hell week but i do like michael a lot due to like remaining distant love from how obsessed i was with 5sos in like 2014. so i watched michael’s stream of it so i wouldn’t have to give jack a view. for starters he’s just fucking insufferable in general and whatever that’s a personal preference. but ig hannah is a huge 5sos fan which like based!! but he kept making such weird fucking comments about it. like she didn’t join bc until a bit later but jack kept making weird fucking comments about her being a fan of them to michael that just rubbed me such the fucking wrong way and it all feeds back into how he so obviously looks down upon women having interests in things aka my main takeaway from april hell week when he took women calling him out for being misogynistic and dismissed them and said they just had internalized misogyny (and my beloved fellow tumblrinas at that). like he kept being like “yeah hannah is a fan of u. she like idolizes u. idk why you’re just a guy she really shouldn’t” and near the beginning she joined the server but wasn’t in vc and was giving michael like a totem and a horse and jack was like “she’s trying to show off to you because she’s One Of Your People” and he just Kept making like backhanded comments about her being a 5sos fan and it reminded me that he HASNT FUCKING CHANGED!! and he had this annoying bit going where he was like im the Biggest 5sos fan and then would sing a song that wasn’t even 5sos. lord forbid hannah was a normal teenage girl who liked a band and as a woman has continued to like that band!!! how dare she be excited to meet a member of a band she loves!! like holy fuck jack manifold i am so serious kill yourself because you do not have any respect for women and are the number one perpetrator of villainizing them for having interests. constantly making jokes at women’s/teenage girls’ expense for being human beings who have interests in things and it was even worse bc michael was so earnest and was like thanking her for the horse and stuff and asking questions about minecraft and wasn’t really responding to the weird like condescending comments jack was making and i just. ugh. he gives me such a fucking ick i want him fucking dead.

“If you see your art here and it needs to be credited message me” is basically just “Credit to the artist” with extra steps. Artists shouldn’t have to go out of their way to get you to credit them, if you’re running a blog or page using other peoples work its 100% on you to do it as ethically as possible and track the artist down before you go sharing their art. If it takes too much time, imagine how much longer the artist worked on that piece. Its not a clever loophole, its a sucky practice.

for the record, the other reason why I'll be bitter that the "dream torments tommy after escaping prison" plot line was left to fizzle and die for no good reason is because it was implied that jack and tommy were going to Finally get a reconciliation arc and I will never ever forgive them for what they took from me

i really hate to rag on a character other people like for my own blorbo so uh, geeta fans i am so so sorry i would recommend skipping this post, i doubt its actually this deep </3 you are allowed to like her prommy

ok but ACtual analysis time, what the FUCK is up with larry and geeta (people who have never had a shitty two faced boss before ask. /j)

larry expresses anti institutional ideologies a lot, he wants to do things outside the system hes in will allow. he expresses a lot of negativity about his position, a lot of remarks which could rock the boat. which they HAVE with the amount of people now realizing most gym leaders have second jobs. and the system might! be kinda fucked! and deal shitty pay and is just kinda a whole gimmick of an industry in the whole universe. and larry sorta points directly at that, when he actively complains about Having to be a gym leader, Having to be an e4 member.

Geeta in this position would fucking hate Larrys guts! and would also point to her just quietly not saying anything when the player likes larry most. Because Geeta doesnt just dislike larry in this position. Geeta dislikes the ideals hes lowkey pioneering here. And when the player likes larry, its like the player is siding with larry. The player believes hes in the right, not Geeta, and it directly pits the player and Geeta at odds, in a very quiet way.

Geeta cant say shit. Geeta has to keep up the appearance of one big happy league full of amazing, positive members and they're all strong and etc etc. She keeps the facade of the entire league. Whether she genuinely loves the league or not, she has to keep an incredibly dedicated face up about the view of the league. But this same rule doesn't apply in private. The gym leaders, her workers have to keep that facade also, especially with Geeta, but Geeta doesnt have to give them that same light of day. Geeta can do whatever she wants, and the gym leaders just kinda have to deal with it.

i very much believe geeta and larrys relationship proposes this really. really sad idea. because geeta is larrys boss, and they. really dont like eachother! and geeta has. power. larry is afraid she will "dock his pay" for chitchat. but really it comes down to his chit chat going against the status quo, the status quo which Geeta benefits from. And ultimately, she does have the power to dock him for chit chat. She can rob him for being honest. And while Geeta's true treatment of the gym leaders as a manager will probably remain unknown, Larry's existence really offers the idea that it's probably not a great role.

Larry is not special. And thats the problem. Hes not breaking ass to go all out on a cute gimmick, hes not loving the institution as much as everyone else is to the point of doing more than its worth. Hes just doing the bare minimum to get by. Actively complains about his job, which for people in the right spheres it could seem like a huge deal to be a gym leader, and an elite four member. like bro! thats awesome! you just get to do pokemon battles all day! but really its not. once you live in the system, and you get sick enough of it, it loses its luster, and you realize that its just another grind, dodging pay cuts, trying to please the right people and constantly bust ass just to pay for the rent on your apartment and maybe groceries.

Larry is a pawn in the same system as everyone else. Geeta needs larry to be special. But he wont be. And Geeta doesn't take well to that.

Thats why hes the exceptional ordinary man. His ordinariness is what makes him the exception.

Something I've been thinking about is how Patrick O'Brian manages so skillfully to write characters whose actions contradict their beliefs, which I think is honestly a big part of why his characters feel so real. Mostly with Stephen and Jack—e.g., and perhaps most notably, Stephen has notably leftist sympathies (honestly I have no idea how to characterize his politics in period terms) who nonetheless becomes very comfortable with his rise to the landed gentry, while Jack is a card-carrying Tory who much of the time sympathizes far more with working class sailors and farmers than with the upper classes—but I'm sure he does it to a lesser degree with some of his minor characters (James Dillon, while perhaps not precisely minor, comes to mind), and I love that he's able to do that, especially the way in which he embeds it in the narrative. We see how they're all unreliable narrators of themselves; we understand how they want to be seen and how that does and doesn't coincide with the reality, but most importantly, this isn't presented as something reprehensible, just as a part of their own humanity. They are not their expectations for themselves, but they don't need to be those expectations to be beloved.

#stephen is especially guilty of this and i think it's very interesting how he thinks of himself versus how he acts #which is probably an essay on its own #but i do think that this is another point he and jack make a fun foil on #(for jack this manifests much less explicitly but i think it's definitely still there)#i can't think of other characters atm besides james dillon #(who okay. his actions don't contradict his beliefs exactly but there is a weird and complex relationship between them)#though i do suspect that there are probably more #idk i've been thinking about this a lot because o'brianizing hornblower has brought to the forefront #how different those two authors treat internal/external narratives #patrick o'brian is kind of like yeah they don't really line up but that's okay that's just what it's like to be a person #while for hornblower and cs forester it's like the internal narrative is so unbelievably unreliable and negative #but the external narrative also seems to be resoundingly positive #(which is probably why. in my humble opinion having watched two episodes of it. the tv show is much more Fun)#writing hornblower in o'brian format is just like wow there is no weirdness going on did i write him wrong #but no it's hornblower he just sounds so much more normal without the 24/7 mental gymnastics #perce rambles #aubreyad
