I'm back again!
DOMES! so- what can u tell me about the space and education domes. I'm so interested. Why are they separated based off of activity? Are all the domes in a giant ish dome? ALSO WHAT DO MARTIANS FARM. POTATOES? what kind of recreational activities are in the recreational dome?
Also what are the fatal flaws of your ocs... I love finding out about this stuff if u cant tell. Any funny (or otherwise) story that any of them would tell about another to like describe one of them? (that sounds very confusing but basically when I introduce folks that are my idiot friends, I give a memorable story that makes people go "ah, that's such a (friend name) thing" (e.g. One of my ex friends from school ate her essay out of spite - she wrote it on rice paper and wanted to spook the teacher)
And yes I've seen the whole "I think I'm attracted to you because youre the hottest person I know" so AMAZING JOB- I love ur ocs!!!
Respectfully curious,
a nerd who likes knowing lore and science (and character!!)
(I'M SO SORRY FOR HOW LONG THIS IS I'M JUST REALLY INTERESTED)
I'm gonna do the flaws first bcs it won't take as long so:
Martha: gets sad cuz she doesn't have a specific 'thing' like the rest of her friends (jenny's the tech guy, Evelyn's the animal guy) and she gets sad cuz she thinks you need a thing to work in and aspire to in order to live your life to the fullest
Tammy: doesn't think. Like at all ever. No internal dialogue nothing in that brain half the time she's just playing rock music on loop. Lights are on but no one's home except the lights aren't even on
Jenny: builds little robots and then gets existential about creating a pseudo life to fulfil one singular purpose. Continues to build little robots anyway.
Thomas: internal dialogue goes 100 miles a second and so when he has to take a second to actually think he just. Blanks. He also has awful memory due to things getting pushed so far back by unrelated tangents
Genji/James: has a mullet
Aled: catastrophises a LOT and overthinks literally everything he's just handing Thomas a hair bobble and he's like 'wait is this elasticy enough. Oh no there's a hair on it oh no. What if my hands sweaty what then-' baby girl it is a hair bobble
Georgie: previous break ups have left her feeling like she isn't interesting enough, now she has to always give her two cents or else she thinks she's forgettable
Dane: ~\_(°u°)_/~
Sahrah: given her uniqueness as a weird fucked up entirely new species she feels like her life has to be perfect so that her mother species doesn't get a bad rap, especially since her mother is the first of her kind to live in mars. Also she's really supposed to be a litter animal but she was the only one who survived to birth so she's lonely a lot of the time
Fun story: Martha says 'the first time me and Tammy met was when she needed someone to show a dead bee to. She asked me if I wanted to pet it'
And ... DOMES!;;
educational dome has the schools and colleges in it, a few corner stores for hungry students, it's not that interesting other than the fact that there are geese for some reason
Space dome is basically just space science stuff, it's got telescopes, research for crops, rockets, exploration base, it's also the original dome! The very first one built by the robots they sent here so that the researchers had somewhere to stay.
What kind of crops do martians grow? Well, any they can get there hands on, there are several small climate controlled domes used to grow different things, deserty, tropical, whatever Ireland is, and some animal domes that rotate various animals and grain, it's also home to the farm house that hosts the majority of Halloween parties. There's also the eden dome, which isn't connected to the farm fines, but to the space domes! It was home to the very first crops grown on mars. (Which, of course, included potatoes) and then if course. The big dome. The super massive one that uses my new favourite thing: AQUAPONICS!! obviously you can't feed an entire small country with just plain kabd, you need stacks! You need later upon layer of fish, water, wires, dirt, plants, synthetic sunlight, and more fish! They also synthesize a lot of meat because it's sci-fi. I can do what I want. And it's better for the air cuz farm animals produce a lot of gas
The recreational domes have shops, cinemas, various sports centres, a nice park, and also hosts lots of festivals. There's also a small 'market dome' that's connected to the residential dome so you don't have to go all that way to pick up some eggs or something. (Martha and Tammy's favourite thing to do is go roller skating at 'saturns rings' also there's a diner where the waiters are all in roller skates)
As to why they're separated, it makes it easier for me to design them in a cool way. Also the air inside is very different to the air outside, so smaller domes make it easier to manage, and keep out the sticky martian sand while building.
Martian sand is ridiculous

The Power of Stop-Motion
Media in today's standard is quick and easy. Rarely is a show more than 2 hours long or 13-epiodes per-season. With that, animated movies are a lot slower than the typical films.
There is a discussion on if animation is suitable for film purposes and while it is often shunned by the Golden Globes or the Oscars or other awards. The very few outliers can prove these awards and the world very wrong.
But that is not what we will be talking about today. Because while animation is popular, there is a dark horse among its sphere. One with a rich history and strong filmography that should be shared. Let's talk about;
Tumblr media
- Have I possibly gone daffy? -
Stop-motion is a film making style that compiles multiple still images of an object being physically manipulated in small movements into one whole scene.
Majority of Stop-motion films and videos use [Clay Animation] or [Paper Animation] with several more varieties of new innovations emerging under the umbrella of stop-motion. The most popular of them in the modern era towards kids is [Lego animation] which is the manipulation of Lego models in motion.
Tumblr media
The earliest trace of Stop-motion in films is the 1898 short [The Humpty Dumpty Circus] by Albert E. Smith and James Stuart Blackton which is said to be a lost media. To compensate, please watch [A Tribute to Stop Motion]
In its early concept, Stop-motion was used as a method to create impossible things or do practical effects under budget constrains. Such as the iconic King Kong scene at the Empire State building. Since then, Stop-motion has evolved into a full production industry. From Indies; [Righteous Robot] to Juggernauts; [Laika Studios]
Tumblr media
- Shimmer a Little at The Edges -
Unconventional media such as stop-motion is often not a style suited for every story. Its a rather expensive type of media that requires worthy innovations top break the niche barrier. Just looking at Laika Studios alone, we see that they've develop a lot of interesting ways to improve visual effects while staying to their stop-motion roots.
One perfect example is seen in < Kubo and the Two Strings > where the animators need to create water in a still image world that feels natural. [A Perfect Storm] one other part of the stop-motion puzzle is the iron-willed discipline it to conceptualize, animate and edit a production that can take about 3 to 5 years to complete. More so of a time frame than a normal film.
Tumblr media
This difficult curve lead to budgeted methods such as using models that already exist to tell new stories. Such as; Legos or with crude multi-jointed figures of existing characters. [MOONSHINE]
While I may say its crude, the low budget production is the selling point. Assisted with sound bites taken from gaming sessions or from shows featuring a lot of inside jokes and memes. Also, its hilarious to see a Teletubby turned into a Eldritch monster.
These attempts to make stop-motion productions accessible has captured the attention of other like-minded channels to collaborate and elevate one another. [ERB: Harry Potter vs Luke Skywalker]
Tumblr media
- For Better Tomorrows -
With all that is said, what is the power of stop-motion? As a media that is tediously overlapping across processes. What are the better tomorrows for our inanimate subjects?
I like to think, that as filmmaking grows. Stop-motion will continue to remain as a sacred tug against live action films and traditional animation. It can be used to tell complicated stories with concepts that may look strange if its adapted in a live action.
As I have mentioned in [The Beautiful World of Hilda] animation's greatest strength is simplification. Stop-motion takes the opposite side of that philosophy.
Tumblr media
Its a higher level of world building of the materials with willingness to accept mistakes and ruggedness that gives them that little flavor of life. As an actual touchable thing, the various cartoonish styles can take on a whole new dimension to heighten the style and give it that detail that is less polished.
Stop-motion shows that filmmaking magic can still exist despite already knowing the tricks. Its a media where every frame shown has a significant purpose that invokes a specific flow. That's the power of stop-motion.

Guys, I am geniunely so sad about the Yuri on Ice movie. We were waiting for such a long time. People were having their doubts with the lack of news but I wanted to have hope anyway. Hope that their story would continue. Hope that we would finally get to see all the years of hard work, passion and dedication that went into making this film. Hope that even after years of mostly radio silence, maybe we could still actually get something. Especially after the pandemic years.
MAPPA cancelled the film due to "various reasons". I feel like after all this time since they started production back in 2017, we deserve a more concrete reasoning. Especially the animators and everyone who worked tirelessly on this project from the very beginning to end.
I remember going to a local anime/cosplay convention years back and met the English VA for Yuri, Jessie James Grelle. It was super cool to meet them. I remember asking if there was anything confirmed for season 2 and them saying there was actually an entire MOVIE in the works. I remember feeling so ecstatic about it, especially since this was just before the official announcement released.
I really loved Yuri on Ice, the characters and the story. I really wanted to see it continue and let the characters and world grow.
To the writer, Mitsurou Kubo, Thank you for this show. Thank you so so much. Thank you for these beloved characters. Thank you for this story. I want to hope that this isn't the end of Yuri on Ice, but I fear it most likely is. I remember feeling so excited, waiting for the episodes to drop every week. It became a routine and my teenage self found a lot of joy through this show. 8 years later and I'm now an adult who's almost Yuri's age. I was really hoping we'd get to see them one last time but, If this truly is the end of Yuri on Ice- Thank you for everything.
but also fuck you mappa.

Hello thereee- can you give me everyone's views on gender?!? So hyped. :)
BEHOLD TYE GRAPH!!
Tumblr media
The graph, conveniently in RGB, so you can make colours with it
Martha! (She/her) She dresses pretty fem, she identifies as a girl, but it's not like ~that big a deal~ to her, #481818 a nice reddish brown :)
Tammy! (She/xi) She cares a lot about her presentation, not in a 'must look fem' way, but in a 'must look cool' way, her clothes are pretty in the middle on the scale, she does id as a trans girl, but like, ehh? She cares about being a girl but in future she doesn't get any surgeries or voice training, just estrogen, so shes in the middle on that. #CB9537 a lovely gold
Jenny! (He/she) She dresses p fem, she's like, bigender but doesn't actually care cuz it's not a huge part of her identity, robotics is more important. #192C74 a lovely dark blue
Thomas! (He/ju) He presents very fem, in fact he's dated two people who turned out to be lesbians later, though he is a boy. As for careness?? He's like middlish, he doesn't mind being seen either way but being a boy who likes boys was like, a big thing for him. #7415F2 a vibrant purple
James/genji: (he/him) presents masc, is a boy, cares about it #EEF4F2 white (to further explain, he's a trans guy, and cares very deeply about being a guy, this is also probably a good place to explain why he's got two names, he named himself after his dad who turned out to be kind of a dick so he changed it again)
Aled! (Any, he/him pref) He's like, mostly a boy? He presents kind of on the masc side but he doesn't actually care that much soo.. °\_( :j )_/° #37A2C6 a nice blue
Georgie! (She/they) She's a girl, but she does use a lot of masc terms for herself, she dresses fem and she's more on the don't care side, she gets #4D2A5F a nice mauve
Dane! (He/zem) He truly is just some guy, his presentation is pretty middly, (is a sweater and jeans really gendered at all?) He does call himself Georgie's wife, but also likes masc terms, he's just kinda... Eh. #0E9DD8 similar to aled
Sahrah! (She/ha) she dresses pretty fem, she is mostly a girl, she's asked a lot about the gender on her mum's planet, and it's kind of different, but she's never gotten the chance to really explore it. She cares like, a decent amount, and so gets #C30F3D a very reddish pink
http://www.cknuckles.com/rgbsliders.html here's the link to the website! For GB 0= fem and 250= masc, for R 0=doesn't care and 250= does care. (So my gender colour would be #1032D4 electric blue)
Neopronouns: (ha/sa/seh) the gender neutral pronouns on her mum's planet. (xi/xin/xir) just some pronouns, pronounced like xhi xhin xhir. (Ju/juself) play on Jupiter, as there's a lot of Jupiter imagery in his story.

So IIRC Kubo picked out theme songs for a bunch of characters, though the only ones I remember are "News from the Front" by Bad Religion for Ichigo, "Superpredators" by Massive Attack for Kenpachi, and "Mars, Bringer of War" by Gustav Holst for Yamamoto. Do you have any music that you associate with your versions of the characters?
Hmmm... Granted, my audio processing issues mean I have genuinely weird taste in music and even weirder musical associations but sure, why not:
Ichigo: Tokyo by The Wombats
Orihime: Madamoiselle Juliette by Alizee
Chad: Light it Up (remix) by Major Lazer
Tatsuki: Karateka Teusday by Robbydude
Mizurio: Putty Boy Strut by Flying Lotus
Keigo: DOTA by Basshunter
Kon: Jazz Arrangement of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" by Samuel Evans
Kenpachi: March of Cambreadth by Alexander James Adams
Unohana: Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
Komamura: Zenit by Onuka
Kaname: Invincible by OK GO
Matsumoto: Walk by Tami Neilson
Byakuya: Power To Rule The World by Moyun

My Personal Ranking For the Oscar Nominated Animated Short Films of 2023
I got to watch these shorts in a local theater yesterday, and it was quite a spectacular time.
Note: I am not ranking these based on the quality of the film, but based on how much I personally liked the film.  There is definitely a difference.  I have come to terms with the fact that I sometimes don’t personally like media that is Objectively Good, and sometimes get unfortunately invested in things that are questionable quality.
With that out of the way, let’s delve in.
1. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse
Tumblr media
I, too, am surprised that this was my favorite of the short films. Dare I say, I feel a bit basic.  Perhaps I’ll hang up a Live, Laugh, Love sign next.
I’m especially surprised, because I actually have more critiques regarding it than I do with other short films that I liked less. Specifically, the dialogue could sound like platitudes, which is a pet peeve of mine with any media.
But it’s absolutely beautiful.  It’s among the most beautiful animation I’ve ever seen, and seeing it on the big screen was nothing short of an emotional experience.
The animation and designs made me love each character, and made the dialogue -- which, in a less beautiful film, might have been enough to put me off liking it -- feel heartfelt.  I can’t praise the creative team behind this film enough for the manner in which they brought these characters to life.  The voice performances are also commendable.
Perhaps most importantly, it put me in touch with my inner child.  Wizard of Oz, Jungle Book, James and the Giant Peach, Spirited Away, Kubo -- there is a timeless impulse among children, it would seem, to be befriended and loved by benevolent talking animals or fantastical creatures.
It is perhaps because of my inner child that I love this film so much. My childhood self might have been oblivious to the beautifully simplistic depth of Ice Merchants, the blink-and-you-miss-it beats that make The Flying Sailor so meaningful, bewildered by My Year of Dicks, and existentially terrified by An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake, but my desire for a big white talking horsey is timeless and powerful.
Where to watch it: Apple TV+
2. My Year of Dicks
Tumblr media
This one is just. So unspeakably funny.  And, despite the fact that I’m a raging Sapphic who’s never been interested in the dicks available to me, I found it intensely relatable.
This may be a controversial statement, but I find that mainstream Hollywood’s attempts to nail down the Female Gaze are often more obnoxious than the Male Gaze itself.  Partially because it often revolves around what male executives think The Modern Woman(TM) finds appealing, rather than an actual understanding of the female experience.  The Male Gaze, at the very least, feels somewhat organic and based in the personal experience of the filmmakers.
This -- this felt like the Female Gaze.  A truly organic trip through the psychology, impulses, and emotions of a fifteen-year-old girl.  It treated its female protagonist not as unknowable, but as relatable, with the five unpleasant male characters she was approaching as Other -- each in five wildly entertaining ways.  And it was glorious.
The way the main character dramatized her experiences -- making full use of the animated world in which she lived -- was something I could relate to viscerally.  I’m reluctant to mention anything else about the plot, as I truly encourage everyone to just experience it firsthand.  It’s heartfelt, exquisitely ‘90s, and a beautiful animated tribute to teenhood and questionable decisions.
Where to watch it: Vimeo, Hulu
3. Ice Merchants
Tumblr media
Such a beautiful and emotional experience.  I would say that this film demonstrates that less is more, but really, it demonstrates that the illusion of less is more.  In reality, this film is teaming with detail, from the beautifully textured ice and misty landscape below, to the subtle indications of the characters’ recently experienced loss.
I was so entranced by the visual beauty and surrealist elements of this film, it took me a while to grasp its actual storyline: subtle clues, presented by a yellow mug, indicate the loss of the ice merchant’s wife and the mother of his son, and the cold world in which they live comes to represent their grief.
Without giving much away, the film ends with a view of a spring landscape, representing the eventual thaw of this grief as father and son begin to heal.
Where to watch: YouTube
4.  The Flying Sailor
Tumblr media
This beautiful and strange animation is based off of a true story, in which a sailor was flung 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) by the Halifax explosion in 1917, and lived to tell about it.
This film is essentially the sailor’s life flashing before his eyes as he soars, naked, over the exploding landscape. We get to know his character through the blink-and-you-miss-it moments that we witness of his life.
My favorite moment of the film was when he lights a cigarette at the same instant a ship in the harbor (unbeknownst to him, full of dynamite) catches fire. His -- and our -- quiet shock as we realize what we’re looking at is haunting.  He even steps on the match, as if in a subconscious effort to put out the blaze, just as the contents of the ship explodes and nearly ends his life.
Where to watch it: YouTube
5.  An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It
Tumblr media
Just because I rank this film last doesn’t mean it isn’t good.  It’s incredibly good, and an inventive way to portray a character’s existential crisis through a stop-motion medium.
Ultimately, this is a story about a man realizing how meaningless his life has become while working at an unfulfilling office job.  But that makes the film sound way more mundane than it actually is.  The way in which this existential crisis is portrayed is through the main character realizing that he and his fellow workers are all stop-motion puppets, after he is visited by the titular ostrich.
And I do like it a great deal, but the reason for it subjectively ranking below the other films is the simple fact that the other films left me with a more positive emotional feeling.  This one...is kind of terrifying.
I wonder if the director was inspired by the 1965 stop motion The Hand, in which a gloved human hand is used as a source of horror in the world of a stop motion puppet.  In a similar manner, human hands look uncanny in this film when contrasted with the main character and his puppet world.
Anyway, go watch it and have an existential crisis of your own.  I recommend it.
Where to watch it: Vimeo
