Hegemonic masculinity was distinguished from other masculinities, especially
subordinated masculinities. Hegemonic masculinity was not assumed to be normal
in the statistical sense; only a minority of men might enact it. But it was certainly
normative. It embodied the currently most honored way of being a man, it required
all other men to position themselves in relation to it, and it ideologically legitimated
the global subordination of women to men.
Men who received the benefits of patriarchy without enacting a strong version of
masculine dominance could be regarded as showing a complicit masculinity. It was
in relation to this group, and to compliance among heterosexual women, that the
concept of hegemony was most powerful. Hegemony did not mean violence,
although it could be supported by force; it meant ascendancy achieved through cul
ture, institutions, and persuasion

This is the first year where I didn't struggle to reach my 52 book goal at all, only some of which is thanks to the Lovecraft marathon. I also read a ton of short sci-fi stories early in the year for an online class I took (which is also why there are so many sci-fi novels in the beginning of the year) and feel much more knowledgeable in the genre even though I'm still not very well read in it. I will be taking a fantasy course next year to what I assume will be similar effect.
It's still hard to read non-audiobooks, made worse this year by a promotion at work that means I have much less free time overall but still a fair deal of time for audiobooks while working with my hands. My (I don't post it) movie list suffered similarly, with this being the first year in a while I didn't hit my movie target.
Not discussed: I read various comics this year! Standouts: Chainsaw Man Part 1, the first volume of Pluto, Fun Home, the fifth volume of Phoenix, Look Back
Goals for next year: more foreign policy reading, more literary fiction, write something of my own, ohgodthesearethesamegoalsaslastyearpleasetellmeI'mnotstagnating

Gordon Calvert Sentenced in County Criminal Court

Six years in the penitentiary was the sentence imposed on Gordon Calvert, 34, convicted last week on nine charges of house-breaking, auto theft, marker theft, and having illegal possession of a loaded revolver. The term was imposed by Judge James Parker in county criminal court today.
Accused was given five years on each of four charges of housebreaking, to run concurrently: and three one-year concurrent terms for auto and marker thefts, and one year consecutive for having the revolver.
Calvert broke into the homes of F. M. Connell, Oriole, Ont.. and stole a variety of goods valued at about $1.000: H. V. Cowie, North York, from where he stole a pair of binoculars and other articles: Allan Case, North York. from which saddlebags, a saddle and a quantity of other things were taken, and a fourth North York home. He also stole a set of license plates belonging to John Loughry, Maryvale, Ont., and cars owned by Charles Morris, Mrs. H. R. Bain and Leslie Thompson, North York. Accused admitted four previous penitentiary terms.
[AL: Calvert was only 26 at this time, but had indeed already been at Kingston Penitentiary three times, had escaped from there once in 1932, had been a cattle rustler in 1936 and led police in a cross-Ontario car chase, and had been out for a year - having returned from Saskatchewan Penitentiary where he had been transferred. He was convict #7201 this time around, and worked in the machine shop and shoe shop. He had a number of reports on his file, and was released after his full term, in September 1947.]

GOP Tears Into Biden Over Potential Deal to Spare 9/11 Plotters From Death Penalty (Biden's a frigging idiot.)
Republicans are criticizing President Joe Biden over a plan to offer plea deals to the 9/11 plotters — including admitted mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed — to avoid the death penalty.
Talks between prosecutors and defense attorneys for Mohammed and his four co-defendants at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where they have been held for two decades awaiting trial, could end up prohibiting prosecutors from seeking the death penalty, the Washington Examiner reports.
"Joe Biden's allies are negotiating lesser sentences for 9/11 attackers," tweeted Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee. "If they won't punish terrorists, how can we trust them to lock up criminals in your neighborhood?"
"A day after the anniversary of 9/11 the Biden admin is doing the unthinkable — they are considering offering the terrorists, who organized those attacks, plea deals to escape the death penalty," the House Armed Services Committee's Republicans tweeted. "These terrorists killed thousands of innocent people — they deserve the death penalty."
"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his accomplices planned the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks [and are] responsible for the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans," Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio and ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, told the Washington Examiner in March. "It is unconscionable that military prosecutors would even entertain the idea of a plea agreement that removed the possibility of the death penalty."
Mohammed, known popularly as KSM, was captured on March 1, 2003 in Pakistan following an 18-month search. But he has been sitting in prison since then awaiting trial. Critics say it has become one of the war on terror's greatest failures. His and four co-defendants' planned trials before a military tribunal have been endlessly postponed.
The latest setback came last month when pretrial hearings scheduled for early fall were canceled. The delay was one more in a string of disappointments for relatives of the nearly 3,000 victims of the attack. They've long hoped that a trial would bring closure and perhaps resolve unanswered questions.
When asked about the case, James Connell, an attorney for one of Mohammed's co-defendants — one accused of transferring money to 9/11 attackers — confirmed reports both sides are still "attempting to reach a pretrial agreement" that could still avoid a trial and result in lesser but still lengthy sentences.
David Kelley, a former U.S. attorney in New York who co-chaired the Justice Department's nationwide investigation into the attacks, called the delays and failure to prosecute "an awful tragedy for the families of the victims."
KSM and his co-defendants were initially held in secret prisons abroad. Hungry for information that might lead to the capture of other al-Qaida figures, CIA operatives subjected them to enhanced interrogation techniques that were tantamount to torture, human rights groups say. KSM was waterboarded — made to feel that he was drowning — 183 times.
A Senate investigation later concluded the interrogations didn't lead to any valuable intelligence. But it has sparked endless pretrial litigation over whether FBI reports on their statements can be used against them — a process not subject to speedy trial rules used in civilian courts.
The torture allegations led to concerns that the U.S. might have ruined its chance to put KSM on trial in a civilian court.
But in 2009, President Barack Obama's administration decided to try, announcing that KSM would be transferred to New York City and put on trial at a federal court in Manhattan.
"Failure is not an option," Obama said.
But New York City balked at the cost of security and the move never came. Eventually, it was announced KSM would face a military tribunal. And then over a dozen years passed.
Kelley said talk of military tribunals two decades ago surprised many in the legal community who had been successfully prosecuting terrorism cases in the decade before. The concept of a tribunal, he said, "came out of the blue. Nobody knew it was coming."
Then-Attorney General John Ashcroft was not in favor of tribunals and had been supportive of the Manhattan federal terrorism prosecutions, he said.
Now, Kelley said, with the passage of time it will be much more difficult to prosecute KSM in a tribunal, much less a courtroom. "Evidence goes stale, witness memories fail."
KSM, at his tribunal hearing, conceded in a written statement that he swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden, that he was on al-Qaida's council and that he served as operational director for bin Laden for the organizing, planning, follow-up and execution of the Sept. 11 plot "from A to Z."
According to the statement, he also took credit for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center; an attempt to down U.S. jetliners using bombs hidden in shoes; the bombing of a nightclub in Indonesia; and plans for a second wave of attacks after the 2001 attacks targeting landmarks like the Sears Tower in Chicago and Manhattan's Empire State Building.
He also claimed credit for other planned attacks, including assassination attempts against then-President Bill Clinton in 1994 or 1995 and an assassination plot against Pope John Paul II at about the same time, the statement said.

hi! i've seen you reference gender trouble multiple times and was just wondering if you recommend any other essays. i'm pretty new to jender studies but this is genuinely fascinating and i want to know more. <3

June 12th, 2016
It has been 3 years after one of the most devastating shooting in the history of the United States in a nightclub pulse. 38 innocent lives claimed death at that time in half an hour and another 11 people died in hospital from injuries. They just came to rest, dance, meet new people and find their love. Although these beautiful souls have been taken away from us, memories and love cannot be taken away from. Let's remember every beautiful soul that we lost that day.

Profiles of Pride: June 12th! 🏳️🌈Pulse Nightclub🏳️🌈
Pulse was a gay bar, dance club, and nightclub in Orlando, Florida, founded in 2004 by Barbara Poma and Ron Legler. On June 12, 2016, the club was the scene of the second worst mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history, and the second deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the events of September 11, 2001. Forty-nine people were killed and fifty-three other people were injured.
Founded by Barbara Poma and Ron Legler, Pulse opened on July 2, 2004. Poma's brother, John, died in 1991 from AIDS, and the club is "named for John's pulse to live on," according to a marketing staff member in February 2016. The venue had a focus on local talent. Poma ensured that her brother's memory was prominent on the website, and that the facility was more than "just another gay club." Legler, who was president of the Florida Theatrical Association when Pulse was founded, also founded two nightclubs in Lake Eola Park in 2010, before moving to Baltimore in 2014. The Washington Post described the club's first 12 years as "a community hub for HIV prevention, breast-cancer awareness and immigrant rights," and reported it had partnered with educational and advocacy groups such as Come Out with Pride, Equality Florida, and the Zebra Coalition.
On June 12, 2016, a lone gunman killed 49 people and wounded 58 others in a mass shooting. The attack was the deadliest single gunman mass shooting in United States history until the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in U.S. history, and the second deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the September 11 attacks of 2001.
In November 2016, the city of Orlando agreed to buy the nightclub for $2.25 million. Mayor Buddy Dyer expressed plans to convert the nightclub into a memorial to honor the memory of the victims.
Barbara Poma, the owner, refused to sell the nightclub to the city in December 2016. Instead she announced in May 2017 the creation of the onePULSE Foundation to independently fund a memorial site and museum slated to open in 2022.
