Kars x reader

Modern/College/Band AU, gender neutral reader

Part 1 (I'm gonna be honest Pt. 2 will not be coming out any time soon because what is writing but enjoy this for now)

The Pillars are a band formed by college students, and they need someone on piano

"So Santana left?" Wamuu questioned from his seat on the ground, clacking his drumsticks against a cardboard box. 

"Yes, correct. Said he has other things to do. Don't know what though, he barely says anything," Kars explained as he tuned his guitar. "He wasn't very committed to the band anyway."

Esidisi set his own guitar down. "Well, aren't we gonna need someone to replace him now? I mean he was just on keyboard, but still."

"Yes, I've thought about that as well," Kars began, strumming a few chords. "I actually have someone in mind. I've seen them play in the West music room. In fact, that's where I'm headed right now. I need to pick up a few things from there anyway."

Kars was in the music room at his university. It was usually empty on this side of campus, with most of the students favoring the one closer to their classes. Kars wasn’t a fan of this room either, the atmosphere was too boring. He only came by because he left his guitar cables here.

On a previous occasion of only hoping to go in and out, Kars had been drawn into the room by the sound of a piano playing. Without their knowledge, he had witnessed someone playing. He would see them on campus a few times lugging around a keyboard piano too. Since then, he had made a mental note of their existence just in case their talent was ever needed.

Sure enough, you were there in the room now. The melody you played was actually very lovely. Kars recognized it as Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca. It seems the person playing hadn’t noticed him come in. Taking his guitar up, Kars decided to make his presence known by following along with his guitar. 

The striking tune of the guitar cut into the melody of the softer piano, and the person playing it momentarily stopped to turn around. Still holding his guitar, Kars raised a brow. “Why did you stop playing? I thought it’d be nice if we had a little duet.”

Of course, you were a bit confused as to what this man was doing here all of a sudden. You would’ve been more cautious if you didn’t recognize him. With that long luscious purple hair of his, he was hard to miss. You knew him from a few of your classes. You didn’t have much to say about him, since you never really spoke to him.

Noticing your hesitancy, Kars kept his distance. "I just wanna know if you can keep up with my guitar," maybe an explanation would encourage you to follow along. 

You stared at him in silence for a while before turning back to the piano. Fingers gliding across the keys, you continued the song. Each strum of Kars' guitar strings matched up with your tap of the keys. The both of you remained in sync til the very end.

Strapping his guitar onto his back, Kars smirked at you, now approaching you a bit. "Not bad. It seems you were able to keep up with me."

"Same goes for you," you finally decided to say something.

Surveying you once more, Kars decided to cut right to the chase. "Listen, I'm in a band. We need someone on keyboard. Seeing how well you play, I think it'd be a great opportunity for you to join."

"What kinda band is it?" You asked.

"Rock, mostly. I've got a drummer and another guitarist. With you, we'd be four."

You leaned back in amusement. "You're asking me to join a rock band when I just played Mozart's Turkish March on a grand piano?" 

Kars smirked back, appreciating the fact you were well engaged in the conversation. "I've passed by this room before and heard you play a few songs by Queen and The Rolling Stones. Am I correct?" 

Shrugging, you turned back to the piano to play a small bit of 'Satisfaction,' a Rolling Stones song you'd learned a while back.

Kars grinned at your demonstration. "So, you in or what?"

After you accepted his offer, Kars told you to stop by his dorm to come meet the rest of the band. It's there that you met Wamuu and Esidisi. You also recognized them from a few classes, and introduced yourself. 

You started with a simple question. "So, what do you call the band?"

"The Pillars," Kars answered. 

"You see, our previous keyboard player left, so we needed another. We have a gig coming up at a nearby club," The one called Esidisi explained the details to you. You listened to everything they said without saying much yourself. 

“Oh yeah by the way, we’re going to a cafe later today. You should totally come with us!” Wamuu suggested. 

“Oh uh, I don’t know about that. I barely even know you guys.”

“That’s exactly why you should come,” Kars cut in. “You’re one of our members now, it’s only natural you accompany us. Or what, were you going to do something else?”

You knew you really didn’t have any plans coming up. You didn’t exactly have many friends, and often stayed locked up in your dorm or wandered around campus and did school work. Either that or you got drunk for no reason. 

"No, I'm free."

"Great, it's settled then," Kars didn't really leave you much room to decline. 

Just as you got up to leave, Kars leaned on the door frame in front of you. It's then you realized just how tall the man was. He barely fit through the door without hitting his head as he looked down at you.

"Oh and Y/n, do bring your keyboard with you. We all look forward to playing with you," he gave you a sly smile.

You didn't respond, offering nothing but a small nod before walking off back to your own dorm. Was it just you, or was that last line a bit suggestive?

-their flowers are alive, and represent each one of them. they also mirror their physical and mental states: Cap's flower is mutated and a root system can be found within the threads of his beret (occasionally, new buds sprout from the fabric, and he takes care to always trim them, and the roots, to keep his suit looking professional), while Olivier's has become wilted and lost its color after decades of being trapped in a mirror

-the first four are unable to remove their masks (Rook and Cap can remove their glasses, however). To appear more human, they have to use illusionary abilities to get rid of their horns and masks. Caper can remove his, though usually keeps his goggles on even when the mask is off

-this is my mascot, and the reason just about all of them have masks & horns, and why ALL of them have a flower (also just. cause horns are Cool); I'll probably call them collectively the "Dead Flowers." the one meant to be my "internet persona," I suppose, is most heavily based off of him. his flower is an amaryllis, representing pride, strength, and determination

-Kaaz is the "dark Ego." he's mostly curious, attempting to find a way out of the mirrors, and gets into things he's not supposed to, often causing damage to people and property as a result. it's not really clear what he is, though he's seen only in reflections. when the "reflection" interacts with anything on his side of the mirror, the real version of reacts as if he's actually there. flower: hollyhock (ambition)

-The Captain has gone through thousands of lifetimes, thousands of timelines, seen himself and his friends die thousands of time in different universes that he now knows lay in collapse, dead, with his current one being lucky enough to not succumb to such a fate. When he and Engineer finally closed the Wormhole, he was no longer truly himself. His name has been lost to him, vacant eyes stare off in the distance sometimes and sometimes others can swear they see galaxies swirling behind his gaze. flower: bee balm (protection, prosperity)

-Rook is a killer, an "apprentice," to Murdock. he's eager to learn, and as deceptive as they come. by day, a rookie detective subverting the authorities from the pair's true whereabouts, and by night, letting his true colors shine. flower: snapdragon (deception)

-Olivier was a quiet district attorney, once upon a time. he genuinely tried to help solve the case of the Actor's "murder," genuinely wanted to help Damien and Celine get their bodies back. alas, he was pushed into a mirror, his body stolen from him. in that mirror, he's been trapped for decades. he's long since stopped banging on the glass in the hopes someone will finally hear. flower: forget-me-not

-Caper was Heist!Mark's partner in crime. he's a master escape artist, and known to break into high-security buildings at the chance of finding a fortune. not to be trusted, he's abandoned many a partner in the past... flower: cornflower (wealth, good fortune)
