rocks 🪨 ✨
so going clockwise from the top right. the ones on the right, Mom got me off temu as part of my birthday present months ago. the ones on the left, I got last night along with the key. and then there's dice I got forever ago to the left of that, and my blue bag of runes in the background.
can't remember what the red is. green looks like jade, purple is amethyst, brown I assume is tiger's eye, and two small smooth pieces of quartz. it's missing lapis lazuli that threw itself down the drain the first night I shadowed a tour at the shop/ company I'm gonna be working with.
the rest on the left I got last night at a local witchy store. well, they appear to have expanded here to New Orleans but got their start in Salem? I went into Omens but apparently they're the sister store to Hex: Old World Witchery. (old world they say, but have voodoo stuff on their shops, smh. xP)
there's a hunk of quartz there at the bottom that's the clearest, and to the left of it is opalite. the black is supposedly jet and the purple with green specks is grape agate?
both the brown one, and the clear one with orange, were in the bin that said aragonite
Tumblr media
the bright green with the swirls is malachite and the green with white is apparently tree agate
some more pictures from different angles. the picture with the black background is from last night right after I'd gotten them because that's my skirt, lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so according to the labels in the shop I got them from:
opalite: to work on self-love, improve mood, & attract business
jet: for divination & "to invoke the Great Goddess"
grape agate: prophetic dreams, visions, & intense meditation
aragonite: to draw upon the energies of "the Earth Goddess"
tree agate: to restore energy, relax, & connect deeply with nature
malachite: for love, balance, guarding children, & protection
Idk how I feel about those descriptions but they definitely jumped out at/ called to me, and for similar feelings to what the description said even if the descriptions didn't feel or seem quite completely the most accurate.

friendly reminder that you don't need expensive stuff to practice witchcraft. i know most of us are drawn to the witchy aesthetic we see in different pictures and videos but we shouldn't be blinded by the capitalistic image of witchcraft.
it's okay to use the old jars you have at home instead of getting brand new ones. it's okay to use local plants and herbs you have growing somewhere near your place instead of ordering a bunch of expensive plants from other countries. it's okay if you can't have a big altar at home. you don't need 300 different crystals just because they look pretty. witchcraft should be more about the connection to the earth and the universe and feeling that magick instead of the things that just seem aesthetically pleasing. if you feel more magical energy coming from the rock you found on the ground rather than the expensive crystal you got at the store you should trust your feelings and intuition. and if a certain part of practicing witchcraft feels wrong to you you can skip it.
your intentions are always above the rituals and the tools you use. without the right intentions and the conviction behind them they don't really mean anything. so it really doesn't matter if you spend $5 or $500 or if you get something for free. please focus more on feeling the magick instead of just buying it.

Witchy Resources
Astrology
Cafe Astrology - does your birth chart and it’s presented in a really cute way imo. It also gives you info about each placement and you can check compatibility and stuff too
Co—Star - I downloaded is the other day, it gives you quick daily horoscopes, do’s and dont’s for the day, and a longer breakdown of the horoscope
Dream work
Little Book of Dreams - I got this at a local store but you can get it for £4. It’s really cute and small, with just little summaries for what common dreams mean. It’s very simple but good for beginners in dream work
Deity worship (These are specific to Hellenism. You don’t have to worship Greek deities to be a witch but it’s what I have resources on because it’s what I follow)
Wikipedia - no seriously. It has info on so many different deities and their mythology so it’s actually quite useful.
r/Hellenism - a good place to ask questions if you’re new to deity worship and get some SPG on less common deities. Be sure to fact check
Amino - there’s a couple of Greek mythology and Hellenist communities on here. Like with Reddit, fact check!
Theoi.com - so much basic info on various deities, and it’s got epithets and things too that Wikipedia doesn’t have.
Tarot
Nata Soul Taro - probably the best pick a pile tarot readers I’ve found on YouTube. she also has a website and does personal readings. The videos are very calming and often really accurate
Zodianz - gives you three tarot cards and their meanings. Includes whether they’re yes or no, zodiac signs, planets and elements that correspond with each card, keywords for the card and then a short paragraph about the meaning. It also gives the meaning of the numbers in the card (like in 8 cups it tells you about 8)
If anyone knows any websites where you can learn tarot meanings let me know and I’ll add them to this list
Spell work
The Works - if you’re British, The Works has a lot of trinket boxes that you can keep spell ingredients in, and some potion bottles which are meant for crafts but they’re perfect for spell jars
Witchipedia - has some basic info about spells and some simple ones that you can do without needing many tools. Perfect for broom closeted witches, beginners or witches who can’t afford fancy stuff.
@strangesigils has some posts on common sigil methods, or, you can use some of their existing sigils!
Shadow work
Pinterest - I’m not kidding Pinterest has some great shadow work prompts if you just type in shadow work. Some are meh and some are really good
Co—Star - as well as astrology this also has a section where you can write a message to yourself and it’ll pop up the next time the stars are in the same position as they were when you wrote it
Crystal work
Holly’s Hope Beads - handmade crystal jewellery! My mum knows the girl who owns it and I’ve gotten a few pieces here. Really pretty and good quality

Candle substitutes
(This is to answer an ask but because I go on forever, I've made it its own post)
Because I've seen this become contentious in the past, I'm going to start with a little witchy secret - if you've been to a public ritual or event where there were candles burning on the altar and you didn't see them lit - they were probably battery operated and being used to adhere to the fire regulations. Sometimes witches are practical.
For me the answer to candle substitutes comes down to - why would I be using the candle? Because different reasons might have different answers.
Altar or Shrine
On an altar or shrine to represent fire or honor a deity, a battery operated candle or even small attractive lamp might be what you're looking for. Some witches do not want electrical cords or similar intruding into their magical space so lamps would be out. I figure at this point, with wifi and such flowing through air, nothing is really without interference. But if that is the case, you could even just hold up an unlit candle or a wand to signify air. (I've never had a deity object to a really cool lamp in their space.)
Cleansing
Incense and smoke cleansing substitutes. I don't think we give enough credit to the ability for sound to cleanse spaces. It could be a bell or, more popular than people realize - play really loud head-banger rock music to clear the space then something gentler to reset everything at a calmer tone.
If you want a scent-based solution, there are diffusers available but you can also just do a simmer pot of the stove. Or buy one of those mini-crockpots and use it. Or put a bit of scent in a spray bottle and spritz the space.
Fountain Foggers Misters - cheaper than you'd expect on Amazon or your local Halloween store. Put one in attractive bowl or container and add a bit of scent. It will create a wonderful mist that you can watch swirl above the bowl.
The Emergency Tea Solution. This is my hotel room trick when I check in only to find the room feels a bit off. It also works in any place that gets very restrictive about what you can do - no candles, no warmers, no diffuses, etc. Make a cup of hot water and drop a tea bag or your favorite loose herbs into it. Walk the space using your hand to waft the steam around the room. Repeat as needed. (I've used the free Earl Grey tea provided by the hotel for this and it works. Free hotel coffee is probably horrid enough to scare away anything.)
Spells
Rewrite the spell or write a different spell. The purpose of burning things in a spell is to send energy out (or up). If you burn something, you transform the energy in that thing into spell energy. You just need another way to do that.
Breath and speech are vibrations. So chanting or speaking the words of spell will send their energy out.
Write the words on something that will biodegrade and tie it to a tree. Or for something long-lasting, like protection, write it on a windchime and hanging it in the wind.
Write the words themselves in water or alcohol and let them evaporate into the air.
And there's nothing like speaking or chanting the words while pouring a libation (alcohol is good if available) on the ground. Most gods, guides and spirits appreciate a drink now and then.
(Oh, the whole candle colors thing is fairly modern because candles being easily obtainable in a wide variety of colors is fairly modern. So feel free to be creative in your color use.)

Thanks to EVERYONE'S recommendations on my post about How Do I Get A Knitting Circle To Adopt Me - A Woodcarver - Into Their Group, I have discovered:
My local library has a knitting/crochet club that welcomes other crafts, too! I will be attending that tomorrow, so maybe they'll adopt me!
There's a local woodcarving group that has monthly meetups! Granted it meets at a senior center and membership is encouraged which I can't do obviously but I'm going to see if that's like, a hard line or not
There are a couple small, independent craft stores that might have leads on more groups, I'll be trying to hit those up in the next few weeks and see if they have any leads!
My witchy shop used to have crafting meetups, I saw it on old FB events! That will be starting back up again soon, so I can hit that up too!
And here's a tentative one - there were so many others like me who expressed the same sadness of not being able to find a little crafting group where we could all work on our respective crafts and just have fun with crafty friends and learn neat things. So I'm talking to a friend about how complicated it would be to set up a discord server for us, because gd it, I know we all live far apart but if there's a way for all of us to do a craft night together once a month or whatever and become crafty friends, we should be able to do it, along with showing off our interesting things we make in between! So put a pin in this one, since I've only ever used discord, not really run one, but if I can make it work, I'm going to try when I have some time.

🎃WITCH-TOBER
Tumblr media
hey witches (or whatever term you prefer!)! the spookiest season is fast approaching, and so i wanted to put together a little list of something witchy you can do for each day of our favourite month! majority are low key, and feel free to do all, some or none of the activities - whatever suits you best, this is just a fun way to introduce witchcraft into your month.
do a tarot/oracle/rune/etc spread for the month of october (i’ll post a “new month spread” very soon!)
write out your goals for the month - witchy and not. maybe you want to try journaling more frequently, meditation, going for walks, drinking more water or cooking some meals at home!
write about a new topic in your grimoire/BoS - this could be a topic you’ve been interested in for a while or something totally left field. you never stop learning as a witch!
try learning about your ancestors. this can be hard for many (difficult family relations, not knowing biological families, the like), however if you can find a family name that’s always a great place to start!
spend time in nature/connecting to nature spirits. going and talking to the trees is so incredibly beneficial, especially if you need to talk about something you feel you can’t open up to a person about. the trees, the ocean, the forest and the mountains are always happy to listen to us
create a new candle - sounds hard, but it’s a lot easier than you think! i love making seasonal candles by taking a store bought, plain candle, then dressing it with oil and some herbs. bonus points for using herbs associated with fall/spring (depending on where you live!)
do a manifestation spell with the waxing moon! this can be as elaborate as a full ritual, or as simple as writing your manifestations on a bay leaf/piece of paper and burning it.
witch-ify your beverages! adding intention into your coffee, tea, water or any other drink you prefer is super effective witchcraft! you can also add things to your drink, such as honey for attraction, cinnamon for abundance, or sugar for sweetness (taste wise too)!
i’m really big on cooking seasonally, so if you can, try and cook or bake (even just throw together some things into a sandwich!) using some seasonal ingredients (i.e, pumpkins, root vegetables, stuff like that) in a meal today
happy full moon! don’t forget to cleanse and recharge your crystals, decks, and of course, yourself today. maybe put out some water to creat some moon water!
refresh your altar if you have one - maybe give it a good wipe down with some moon water (or just normal water!), cleanse it and redecorate it however you like
create a new sigil today, either creating one of your own design or using an online generator (like this one!) for prosperity, abundance, protection, whatever you like! use in your craft however it suits you
do some shadow work - i recently posted a 30 days of shadow work challenge, so you could try a prompt from that list or any you find!
try giving an offering to a deity, ancestor or spirit you work with or are wanting to connect to. this can be as simple as offering a portion of your food to them, or an entire ritual dedicated to them - whatever works best for you!
look into your astrology! if you’ve never looked at your chart before, there are lots of different websites that can do it such as this one, and they’ll give you a pretty in-depth dissection of your chart!
cleanse your space - either with a smoke method, sound, a spray, or visualisation!
try doing some mindful movement - this can also work as a meditative practice! this includes walking, yoga, running, or weight training. set your intention first, then see how you go!
find out some local lore of the town you live in! it’s often a lot more interesting than you think. i also love to learn about local native plants in my area that i can then use in my craft!
refresh any wards your have set up if you have them, or if you don’t, now is a great time to set one up! they can be very simple or complex depending on the method you choose, and there are several great posts on here about them!
as the moon wanes (gets smaller!), now is the perfect time to do some releasing. write anything you want to let go of - people, things, attachments, etc. - on a piece of paper and burn it or otherwise dispose of it
read a new witchy book - don’t sleep on your local libraries! there’s also plenty of pdf books about witchcraft topics online if you can’t get your hands on
make a spell jar! this kind of magick is super fun, relatively simple, and can be done quickly with items you already have. any jar is suitable, such as the jar from your pasta sauce, not just the aesthetic ones you see on tiktok! add your ingredients along with your intent, seal with wax from a candle and set it wherever suits the intention.
practice some grounding. place your bare feet on some soil or grass, or even hold some soil if you don’t have access to natural ground today. visualise roots growing from the centre of the earth towards you, and from the centre of you towards the earth. see them intertwine and let mother earth ease your physical, spiritual, and mental struggles, pain or heavy emotions
visit a cemetery if you have one close by. you don’t need to go to one holding someone you know, it’s still just as meaningful to visit a new one you’ve never been to (a post soon coming on what to do when visiting a graveyard!)
put together a witchy playlist! this can be for your walk or to start your day, to listen whilst you practice/divine, or just to play to help you feel a bit better. if you don’t want to make your own, you can always just listen to one someone else has curated!
make a cleansing scrub - all you really need is some salt (medium-ground works well for scrubs!), any oil of your choosing, and some herbs if you choose. make sure anything you add is body safe!!! set your intention whilst using and allow the scrub to cleanse away any spiritual “dirt” you’ve accumulated
enchant a piece of jewellery! can be a ring, a necklace, bracelet, a pair of earrings, or even bobby pins used in your hair
write a gratitude list. get specific and write as many individual things as you can!
reflect on the goals you wrote down at the start of the month. have you achieved them? why/why not? is there something you achieved that you didn’t write down that you’re proud of?
do some protection magick. the spirit/earthly worlds are growing closer now, so some extra protection can never hurt!
happy Samhain/Beltane/Halloween! the veil is thin today, so now is the perfect time to reach out to spirits (safely of course!) and try a (potentially new) form of divination!
i hope this gives you some ideas for witchy things to do this month! just as a reminder, your craft is so personal to you, please don’t let me or anyone else ever tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing in your craft (unless you’re taking from closed practices - DONT DO THAT). never feel bad for not having the energy or not being able to partake in a certain activity. you are always a witch, no matter how you practice.
love always, taylah. 🤍

Quick Question.
Would anyone be interested in a cookbook of kitchen spells? I have a HUGE list of them and am considering self-publishing either a physical or virtual version, possibly both. If anyone would like to see that, please leave a comment, and please reblog or tag other witchy friends so this can get some traction. Thank you!
Support your local witch on Ko-Fi or at my store, Hallow Grove!

On a scale of 1-10, how unethical is it that my local witchy/metaphysical shop is selling what they are advertising as 'graveyard dirt'? The store is near-ish to a cemetery so I assume it comes from there, and it's only $4 a bag, but that seems like something easily faked and given what I understand about it's potential magical uses, is something that needs to be payed for/collected by only the person using it and shouldn't go through any sort of middle-person.
Store-bought graveyard dirt feels wildly disrespectful no matter how you cut it. Even if it was harvested ethically, it shouldn't be sold. The idea that someone is profiting from the sale of grave dirt feels ghoulish.

At long last I have edited the pictures of the witchy charm bracelet I finished last month! This was a really fun project that started with a single Ouija Board planchette earring and a silver chain bracelet I found in a second hand jewelry bag of odds and ends. I collected the rest of the charms from local stores and shops I found on Etsy!

I’m just starting to get into witchcraft and wonder where is best to start? I live with my Christian family so I can’t have open or obvious things :’)
all I have currently are a few different crystals, what I think is turquoise, epsom salts, and taper candles. What are some beginner things to do so I can learn how to feel the energy of a charm or spell? Thanks!
also is there ways to talk to local spirits? My neighborhood was built on top of a big old farm land and we find fences and saw pieces in the woods. Would there be a way to attempt to connect to spirits near me?
I wish you amazing luck on your journey <3
Hey!
You actually have enough to do plenty of spells, everything else (cauldrons, herbs, oils, etc.) are useful but not 100% necessary. You mentioned not being able to be open with your craft, if you mentioned that because you want to set up something that is typically larger, like an altar. You can create a pocket altar with an altoid tin, you can also use an altoid tin to store certain witchy items.
When it comes to feeling the energy of a spell, I can't tell you how to do that, this is something that just came naturally to me. I'm assuming you're talking about the energy you put into the spell. But if you're talking about detecting the energy in a spell, like a spell jar you can actually use a pendulum. Generally the stronger the movement of the pendulum the more energy the spell jar contains.
Lastly, I will preface my advice forworking with spirits by saying I never reach out to a spirit that I don't know. So my advice on spirit work always comes from a rather guarded standpoint. Now, on to the advice. First make sure that the spirits you call upon your spirit team for protection, also any angels, ancestors, or other spirits that you know offer you protection. You may also want to do a protection candle before reaching out. Then you can begin speaking in the room or space that you're in, a simple greeting like a "hello". Leave an offering of some sort, this may be an offering that comes to you intuitively or if you have an idea of what the spirits you are dealing with may want, give them that. You might get the feeling that someone is there with you, if the presence feels wrong or off get out of that place with a quickness! If you feel nothing and feel like the spirits in a particular area may not want to deal with you, leave those spirits be. Also, be sure to cleanse yourself if the presence was a negative one. Please, please, please be careful when calling on an unfamiliar spirit, I know a lot of times people on the Internet will approach everything spiritual or witchcraft related like just try it. But some stuff is not as simple as just trying it, not everything is as simple to come back from. This is by no means a comprehensive guide on dealing with spirits and you may want to learn a little about the different types of spirits. The book "Urban Magick" by Diana Rajchel has information on dealing with city spirits. If you don't feel comfortable bringing home a book about witchcraft many libraries have ebooks now.
Sorry for the super long response and feel free to ask another question if this didn't fully answer your questions, all the very best to you!
- Erika, The Clumsy Witch
