Ventus Character Analysis based entirely off of the 10 or so pages he exists for in the KHX novel.
A couple months ago I made a post regarding a small passage from the KHX novel that had caught my attention because of how it established a bit of character for Ventus in such a short paragraph. Now, I’ve decided to comb through the rest of the section he appears in to see if I can find anything else worth talking about character-wise, and take up the challenge of writing my first ever character analysis essay for something non-school related. Lord have mercy on my soul please, I swear I’m trying my hardest over here. While his appearance in the KHX novel was brief, we can still learn interesting information about Ventus’s character as he appears in the Chi Saga.

Ventus first appears in the book on the very end of page 136 -11 pages before the book’s conclusion- during the epilogue titled “Epilogue- Unchained X”. This is the only section of the book he appears in, as the epilogue covers the end of the keyblade war, the union leader meetup, and has a short interlude for Strelitzia’s death. It should be noted that most of the more interesting bits about Ventus can be found on page 137, as that is the page where he is fully introduced, before the book shifts its attention over to the arrival of Brain. Like I said, very brief appearance. So forgive me if I end up repeating some points on accident. As is common for the Kingdom Hearts novelizations, a majority of the dialogue is taken straight from the game cutscenes, and KHX is no different. There is nothing in the dialogue in this book that could allow us to glean information about Ventus’s character that we would not have already gotten in-game. That’s not to say there’s absolutely nothing new to be taken into account, because if there wasn’t I wouldn’t be writing this. It’s all in the prose.
Ventus’s arrival comes with a description of him, that being “The one who answered was a boy with short, wavy golden hair and a tendency to look at the ground. He seemed so quiet that it was hard to imagine him fighting with a keyblade” (pg. 136). While it doesn’t really describe Ventus physically, it does tell us a lot about him personality wise. Mainly, Ventus seems to be a very shy and timid person. He’s not the type you’d imagine when thinking of people who go out everyday and fight dangerous creatures made of darkness. Ventus’s apparent tendency to look at the ground as mentioned above might also suggest that he’s unsure of himself, as doing so can be seen as a sign of nervousness or uncertainty -at least, according to body language analysts. What’s more is that the speech indicators used when Ventus speaks seem to support this. When Ventus introduces himself to Skuld and Ephemer, he is described as doing so “shyly” (pg. 137), when he wonders why he was chosen Ventus sounds “uncertain of himself” (pg. 137), and when lamenting his lack of friends, Ventus mutters (pg. 137). Suffice to say, Ventus is not a very confident person. He lacks what he sees as sufficient enough skills that would warrant him being chosen as a union leader. He says so himself, “I’m not especially good at anything… And I’m never at the top of the rankings.” (pg. 137). In the very first scene he appears -and the only section that is dedicated to him specifically- in the novel it is made very clear that Ventus lacks self-confidence. He talks down on himself and all-around just seems very unsure as to why he, a timid, not very strong 10-12 year old boy of all people, was chosen to lead the unions after the war. 
Another key part of Ventus’s character throughout the events of KHUX is his lack of close friends. Before becoming a union leader, Ventus was completely alone. Besides maybe his Chirithy, Ventus had no one. His apparent timidness and self-confidence issues probably factored into this. He was too shy to try and approach random keyblade wielders in the hopes of befriending them. If we choose to believe that Ventus was in-fact a preteen around this time, then his age would present a problem as well. Being a 10 year old surrounded by teenagers in an incredibly competitive environment where being stronger than all of your peers and collecting the most lux to get high up in the rankings is highly encouraged is not going to do much good for your self-image. In an environment like that, many wielders would likely look down on those they deem as being too weak, and by Ven’s own admission, he would’ve been incredibly likely to be one of those seen as too weak. Not to mention how a lot of teenagers probably would not want to be hanging around with a 10 year old who could barely pull his own weight. So, Ventus would’ve been stuck in a cycle of being rejected by stronger keyblade wielders for being too weak, but not being able to get stronger because he was completely alone aside from his Chirithy. In a series that puts so much emphasis on the strength we get from our friends and peers, Ventus had none of that. There’s one paragraph -the one that inspired me to make this in the first place- which reads, “Ephemer had never seen this boy Ven. Many keyblade wielders he would at least recognize by face, and you usually heard stories about the really exceptional ones, but Ven belonged to neither category.” (pg. 137). It may not say so directly, but this passage once again reiterates how lonely and for all intents and purposes unremarkable Ventus was in Daybreak Town. Ephemer, someone who feels that in a town of potentially thousands of keyblade wielders he would be able to recognize most of them by face alone, does not recognize Ventus at all, and he’s clearly never heard of him either. It feels mean to say, but Ventus is not well-known, he’s not recognizable, and he’s not an exceptional keyblade wielder. Ventus is a nobody, and I don’t mean like in the Kingdom Hearts enemy way, I mean a literal nobody.
It’s mean, I know it’s mean, I’m basically just bullying the poor kid at this point, but that’s what we can infer from the text. With all of this in mind it’s really not hard to see why Darkness chose him as its target. He was weak, he was vulnerable, he was the perfect choice for Darkness to leech onto. Ventus, above all else, wanted strength and friendship, and he did get that eventually with the union leaders. But it was all at the cost of another person’s life. Darkness answered Ventus’s wishes and gave him everything he wanted. Strelitzia had to die in order for Ventus to get what he wanted. Ventus, of course, did not know about this. He did not kill Strelitzia, not on purpose. He was an unwilling participant in her murder. But it would not be inaccurate to say that Strelitzia did die directly because of Ventus. If Darkness did not “fulfill” Ventus’s wants, Strelitzia would still be alive and a union leader. But where would that leave Ventus? The reality of it is that in a world without the interference of Darkness Ventus would not have been asked to become a Dandelion by Ava due to his lack of strength as she was tasked specifically with recruiting the best keyblade wielders, and he wouldn’t have been recruited any of his friends who might’ve been in the dandelions because he had none. Poor Ventus would’ve fought in the war and realistically would’ve died very quickly. 
That’s really all I have to say here. I could say more, but this is meant to be an analysis of Ventus’s character as he is portrayed in his very limited appearance in the KHX novel. For what it’s worth, this whole essay probably won’t reveal anything about Ventus’s character that we couldn’t already assume from the cutscenes in-game, but I do think it’s still important. For how little we see of him in the novel it does one hell of a job in establishing parts of his character right off the bat without outright saying anything definitive.

i've been studying true crime for as long as i can remember but i've never been that shocked until now. until i heard about the daisy's destruction case. peter scully is a 61 old man (he currently is in jail) who have done the most gut wrenching, horrifying things i've read. he didn't act alone but he was the "brain" of these crimes. he and his two "girlfriends" kidnapped children promising their parents health and a great situation or whatever but that's clearly not what happened. now the story behind daisy's destruction is fucking insane and horrifying so it's not too late to quit, i don't wanna be in charge of any tears or anything take care of yourselves. one of the girls kidnapped three children. liza, cindy and daisy (i believe this is their names, i apologize if not). i haven't seen the video daisy's destruction since we can't find it on this side of the internet, only on the dark web and for obvious reasons i will not go on the dark web. especially not to see this horror. peter basically r@ped those little girls. to clarify, liza was 11, cindy was 10 and daisy was 18 months old. peter had cindy digging her own grave before strangling her to death. liza and daisy are still alive but they obviously are traumatized and it was confirmed that daisy is unable to have children due to severe injuries around her vagina. i wish them the best and i hope cindy is resting in peace after the hell she went through.
jeffrey dahmer. dear lord, where do i even start? jeffrey would hang in gay bars around the 80s due to his sexuality if i'm correct (correct me if not). i've been studying jeffrey's case for longer so i mostly know what i'm talking about unlike peter's case but i'm not perfect so i might make mistakes so don't hesitate to correct me. jeffrey has always been "fascinated" by death and everything that revolves around it. he would dissect dead animals with his father as a hobby. growing up, jeffrey will realize it's more than just a "scientific" fascination. it sexually attracted him. he would start off by drugging his victim's drink so it'd be "easier" to get them home (please stay safe you guys, psychos are everywhere, always hold your drinks wherever you go). his victims were all males in their 20s or so except for one who was 14. jeffrey was grown when he killed that 14 year old boy. i've personally seen pictures of jeffrey's appartement after he got arrested and those picture made me so uncomfortable. i've also seen jeffrey's polaroids and i don't even wanna comment on it. what kills me is that those photos are so easy to find like that just disgusts me and it made me so uncomfortable.
now, why did i tell y'all all that, hm? there's obviously a reason and you're right. there is. it might sound dumb or like i'm overreacting but i promise i'm not. i've seen MULTIPLE facebook pages, tiktok edits and instagram accounts glorifying and idolizing those monsters. mostly jeffrey because peter's case isn't really known but i have seen "fan" accounts of them both. it's sickening. y'all realize they took the life of innocent, beautiful people. OF KIDS. like. even if peter didn't kill liza and daisy, he still took their life away from them. jeffrey murdered, ate and drugged people. peter raped, murdered and tortured little girls and you have nothing better to do than to create a fucking fan account to support them? you're sick. honestly, fucking disgusting. you think peter or jeffrey would show mercy to you if you were in front of them? you think they'd be like "oh you're my fan, all good!" NO, THEY WOULDN'T. they are murderers and you are glorifying their actions. honestly, you're as sick as peter and jeffrey if you think their actions are okay. i'm sick to my stomach just thinking about the edits i saw of jeffrey with a cute ass stupid caption saying "i could fix him" or "he wouldn't hurt anyone" well shame on you. he did and he admitted to it. the families of the victims maybe have facebook, tiktok or instagram. how do you think they'd feel if they saw their son's/daughter's, cousin's, little brother's/sister's, nephew's/niece's murderer being loved, supported and idolized? you guys are sick. you need to get off your phone and go touch some grass seriously.

Wednesday 13th July 2022, of 15th Week of Ordinary is the feast of St Henry II. (973 - 1024). German. Crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1014 by Pope Benedict VIII as Emperor Henry II. He was a powerful man of the world, a man of war and international politics. He became a saint. It shows that anyone can become a saint. Henry used his wealth and power to promote the Kingdom of God by supporting missionary work. In spite of his cares of the earthly Roman Empire, his gaze was on Heaven, the eternal Kingdom.
In our Gospel of today, there is a note of joy in the voice of Jesus as He talked about the secret of how the gracious and mysterious will of the Father works. We know that Abba Father has a tender love or preferential options for the widow, orphans and migrants. This is an Old Testament teaching. Jesus added another class of people to the preferential group: the "Childlike."
Who are the Childlike?
God in His merciful and powerful Providence chooses the weak to accomplish great things. He chose Mary, the 14 year old Virgin of Nazareth to be the Mother of the Son. He chose Saints Catherine of Siena and Therese, the Little Flower and revealed to them the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. He called and chose St Maria Faustina and revealed to her the secrets of the Divine Mercy.
The childlike therefore are people like the above mentioned saints but also these old and tried warriors: Moses, David, Elijah, Paul, Mother Teresa, Sister Angelica. God makes known His inner life and His ways to them. God who does not ration His Holy Spirit wants to make the same gift of the Holy Spirit to all His children.
"It is the little and the poor who come to Me in the Sacrament of My love and who console My Heart by their presence to Me. It has always been so. The proud and the worldly have no time for Me, because I am hidden, because I am poor, because I am silent, in the Sacrament of My love. But those who are themselves humble and poor are drawn to the humility and the poverty of My Eucharistic presence. I welcome them. December 19, 1941 (Friday): Adolf Hitler relieved Walther von Brauchitsch as Commander-in-Chief of the German Army and took personal command himself. A proclamation announcing the move was published two days later. (Wikipedia)
In a major shake-up of the military high command, Adolf Hitler assumes the position of commander in chief of the German army. The German offensive against Moscow was proving to be a disaster. A perimeter had been established by the Soviets 200 miles from the city—and the Germans couldn’t break through. The harsh winter weather—with temperatures often dropping to 31 degrees below zero—had virtually frozen German tanks in their tracks.
Soviet General Georgi Zhukov had unleashed a ferocious counteroffensive of infantry, tanks, and planes that had forced the flailing Germans into retreat. In short, the Germans were being beaten for the first time in the war, and the toll to their collective psyche was great. “The myth of the invincibility of the German army was broken,” German General Franz Halder would write later.
But Hitler refused to accept this notion. He began removing officers from their command. General Fedor von Bock, who had been suffering severe stomach pains and who on December 1 had complained to Halder that he was no longer able to “operate” with his debilitated troops, was replaced by General Hans von Kluge, whose own 4th Army had been pushed into permanent retreat from Moscow. General Karl von Runstedt was relieved of the southern armies because he had retreated from Rostov.
Hitler clearly did not believe in giving back captured territory, so in the biggest shake-up of all, he declared himself commander in chief of the army. He would train it “in a National Socialist way”—that is, by personal fiat. In July 2006, Stormy Daniels, an American pornographic film actress, met donald trump at a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada. At the time, trump was the host of the reality TV series The Apprentice and was married to melania trump. Their son, barron trump, had been born four months earlier. According to Daniels, trump invited her to his penthouse at Harrah's Lake Tahoe where the two had sex and talked about making her a guest on The Apprentice.
In 2011, Daniels considered selling the story to the celebrity magazine Life & Style for US$15,000 as trump began exploring a potential presidential bid. His lawyer, Michael Cohen, threatened to sue Life & Style when it asked the Trump Organization for comment. Daniels' agent, Gina Rodriguez, leaked the story to gossip blog The Dirty in October. The post was taken down following complaints by trump's lawyers, and Daniels disputed the story's veracity.
As Trump's 2016 presidential campaign began, Rodriguez approached multiple publications—including the National Enquirer—and attempted to sell the story. Following the publication of a lewd tape between trump and the television host Billy Bush, the National Enquirer bought the story in October 2016. In an effort to help the Trump campaign, the National Enquirer sought to suppress the story. Rather than paying Daniels, the National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard negotiated a $130,000 non-disclosure agreement between Daniels and Cohen. As the election neared, Cohen attempted to find the money and repeatedly delayed her payment. Keith Davidson, Daniels's lawyer, canceled the deal in October 2016.
Realizing that his work to cover up the story could be revealed, Cohen drew the money from his home equity line of credit and sent it through a shell company incorporated in Delaware. Trump initially denied knowing about the check made out to Daniels. In April 2018, aboard Air Force One, he told a reporter he did not know where Cohen got the money. Rudy Giuliani, an attorney for trump, refuted these claims in a Fox News interview, saying that trump was aware of the payments. trump wrote several checks, totaling $420,000 to Cohen.
The checks reimbursed him for the non-disclosure agreement and covered the costs for Cohen to manipulate online polls to boost trump's status. The $180,000 paid to Cohen was doubled to offset taxes, and $60,000 was added. These payments were made throughout 2017, during Trump's first year of his presidency. The payments made to Cohen were declared as a legal expense; if this were misleading, it would constitute a misdemeanor under New York law.
Prosecutors have also considered the legality of Cohen's payment; under New York law, falsifying business records to cover up a crime is a Class E felony.

On August 8, 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, the residence of former U.S. president Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida. The search warrant application was authorized by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and approved by Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, following a criminal referral by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
The order, unsealed a few days after the search, showed that the FBI obtained the search warrant as part of an investigation into Trump relating to three federal criminal statutes:
violations of the Espionage Act regarding unauthorized retention of national defense information;
destroying or concealing records "with the intent to impede obstruct or influence" federal government activity;
illegal removal or destruction of federal government records (without respect to cause).
Later, courts released the affidavit with redactions, giving the public a window into the FBI's goals in this search and what the FBI seized. In 2021, NARA tried to recover material, and Trump went through the material in his possession at the end of that year. Surveillance footage subpoenaed by the Justice Department in June 2022 showed boxes were moved in and out of a storage room at some point. The Justice Department said the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago were likely "concealed and removed" to block investigation.
Over 13,000 government documents were recovered. They included nuclear-related information and FBI, CIA, and NSA information about national security interests. Of these documents, 337 were classified: 197 handed over in January 2022, 38 turned over under subpoena in June 2022, and 102 seized in the August search of Mar-a-Lago. Months later, at least two more documents with classified markings were uncovered at Trump locations.
On June 8, 2023, Trump was indicted on federal charges related to the documents. On June 13, 2023, Trump surrendered to federal custody and was arrested, booked, processed, and arraigned in the U.S. District Court of South Florida. Trump pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges. My Lemonade Stand by Dr. Wilfred Waterson (November 30, 2023). Vibrant crayons partied hardy on the posterboard sign of my lemonade stand. Their footprints said, "Let Those Without Sin Convince Me Love Never Wins In The End!" Then Jesus and a travelling table and chair were witnesses to what unfolded next. The day was broiling, so when they saw me, they were desert desperate for my sweat.
And I said: You think you're such a nuisance to me, well, go ahead and get to it. But I'm juicin' dozens of lemons here while you're smirkin' 'bout all you're doin'. 'Cause my weakness isn't only obvious to just the two of us, you see? Now hear my Father sing; 'cause he made a humble little lemon tree of me.
Three times I'll plead for relief, and on the fourth we're gonna get to it. And by "we" I mean my Father's grace and my deep roots leading you straight to Him. You're stoning me with the squishy tart softness picked from the lemon tree of me. But Jesus is my sweetness; so I'm an oasis of cool lemonade and kindness to you in this vicious heat.
See me as nothin' and call me a sheep; but ain't the whole world the destiny of the meek? So please don't sleep on these lemon seed mysteries that are leavin' us lacking nothing like priests. The Book of Jude (Part 01) – The Description of True Believers!
Rhema Word: Jude 1:1-2 (NKJV) “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.”
Let us pray. Our Gracious Loving Father, thank You for giving us an opportunity to meditate Your Word today along with Your children who have been called to live a holy life, Father. I commit everyone who are all meditating this message into Your mighty hand Father. Bless them and give them the oneness of Spirit and make their heart as a good land to receive each Word which is living and active Father. Thank You Holy Spirit for helping us to understand the in-depth treasure of Your Word and helping us to live a life as per Your Word Lord. We give all the Glory and Honour to You only Father. We pray in the mighty Name of Your beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
Who authored the book?
Like most of the other general epistles, the title of this little book takes its name from its author. Most scholars identify the writer as Jude the half-brother of Jesus for at least two reasons. First, he identified himself as the “brother of James” (Jude 1:1), meaning he was not the apostle named Jude, a man who was called “the son of James” (Luke 6:16). That the author of the book of Jude identified himself as the brother of James aligns him with the family of Jesus. (See “Who Wrote the Book” on the page about James for more information.) Second, Matthew 13:55 records the names of the brothers of Jesus as James and Judas. Whereas the gospels record his name as Judas, English translations shorten it to Jude—for the same reason no one in the present day wants to name a child Judas, because of the association it has with Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus.
Like his older brother James, Jude did not place his faith in Jesus while the Lord was still alive. Only after the crucifixion and resurrection did the scales fall from Jude’s eyes and he became a follower of his half-brother, Jesus. First Corinthians 9:5 offers a tantalizing piece of information, noting that the Lord’s brothers and their wives took missionary journeys. From this scant portrait, we begin to picture Jude as a man who lived in skepticism for a time but eventually came to a powerful faith in Jesus. And as he travelled on behalf of the gospel—telling the story in city after city with his name Judas butting up against that of Judas Iscariot—he would stand as a living example of faithfulness, a stark contrast to the betrayer.
Why is Jude so important?
Jude’s edgy brevity communicates the urgency of his notion that false teachers needed to be condemned and removed from the church. Few words meant that Jude would not waste space dancing around the issue. He saw within the church people and practices that were worthy of condemnation, including rejecting authority and seeking to please themselves. In response to these errors, Jude marshalled much biblical imagery to make clear what he thought of it all—anything from Cain killing his brother Abel to the punishment of the sinful people who populated Sodom and Gomorrah (Jude 1:7, 11).
What's the Purpose of this letter?
Jude’s purpose in his letter was twofold: he wanted to expose the false teachers that had infiltrated the Christian community, and he wanted to encourage Christians to stand firm in the faith and fight for the truth. Jude recognized that false teachers often peddled their wares unnoticed by the faithful, so he worked to heighten the awareness of the believers by describing in vivid detail how terrible dissenters actually were. But more than simply raising awareness, Jude thought it important that believers stand against those working against Jesus Christ. Believers were to do this by remembering the teaching of the apostles, building each other up in the faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and keeping themselves in the love of God (Jude 1:17, 20–21).
Here we can see Jude sitting down and writing to the believers of the first century. And in writing, he wastes no time: right from the start he describes himself as a true minister of Jesus Christ and his readers as true believers of Christ. Consequently, in his opening remarks we have a picture by which we can measure ourselves, the picture of a true minister and of a true believer.

Let us try to understand the First Part – “The Description of True Believers”, on the following, with the help of our Holy Spirit, today:

The Bible says in in Jude 1:1 “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ.”
There is the picture of the true minister. Who is he? Jude says two simple things about himself:
(i) He says that he is “a servant of Jesus Christ”. This is amazing, for as stated above, Jude was the brother of Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). At first, he did not believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the Son of God who was to come to earth as the Saviour of the world. But note what Jude says here: he says that he is “a servant of Jesus Christ”. He now believes that his brother Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. He believes that his brother Jesus is the Son of God who came into the world to save man. He believes that his brother Jesus can save him from sin, death, and judgement; he believes that his bother Jesus can make him acceptable God. What an enormous turnaround! What a testimony for our Lord Jesus Christ!
Our Lord Jesus Christ said in John 12:26 “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour.”
Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 6:6-7; Colossians 3:23-24 “Not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.” … “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
The Bible says in Hebrews 12:28; Exodus 23:25; Psalms 2:11;100:2 “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” … “So, you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.” … “Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.” … “Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.”
(ii) Jude says that he is the brother of James. Who is James? What James would be so famous and well known that all the believers of the first century would know him by his first name? There was only one such James, the James who was the Lord’s brother, the James who was the pastor of the great Jerusalem church, the mother church of Christianity.
Note this fact: Jude identifies himself by referring to James. Believers all over the world knew James, but few knew Jude. Therefore, he must identify himself so that his audience will receive his exhortation. He is simply Jude “A servant of Jesus Christ and the brother of James”. Note the humility of this man! The only claim he has is that he is a slave to Jesus Christ and the brother of a famous man. He could have easily been jealous of his famous brother, resentful of the fact that he had to live under the shadow of his brother, resentful that he had to use his brother’s name to get a hearing from believers. But Jude was not jealous or resentful. He was a true minister of God: he walked humbly among the believers or the world, humbly before God, ever so thankful that God had called him to serve His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, thankful for whatever call God gave him.
Lesson 01: The true minister of God has two very basic traits:
(i) The trait of being a servant and slave of Jesus Christ. And remember Christ means Messiah, the Anointed One of God, the Son of God whom God sent into the world to save men. This is the most basic belief of a true follower of Jesus Christ. Therefore, every true minister of the gospel makes this belief the basis of his life and ministry. He is a true minister because he is a servant and slave of Jesus Christ.
(ii) The trait of humility. The true minister walks humbly among believers and before God. No mater how low God’s call is to him, he is thankful for the very fact that God called him. He is the servant and slave who is available to do the bidding of the Master.
Lesson 02: The fact that Jude was a brother of our Lord is glorious evidence that Jesus Christ is exactly who He claimed to be. It is touching when we realize that Jude has lived as the half-brother to Jesus for years. Day in and day out, hour by hour, month by month, and year by year Jude had played, eaten, worked, slept, and gone to school with Jesus. He had roamed the surrounding hills with Jesus as a boy and seen Him play with other children and relate to the neighbours and adults of their neighbourhood. Jude had seen how his brother received and responded to adult instruction, teaching, and supervision. He had also probably seen Jesus take over the head of the household when their father, Joseph, had died.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said in Mark 16:19; Luke 22:69; John 3:31 “So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.” … “Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” … “He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.”
The Bible says in Acts 2:26; 5:31 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”… “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.”
Apostle Paul says in Romans 10:9; 14:9; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 1:19-20; Philippians 2:6-11 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” … “For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.” … “Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” … “And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.” … “Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore, God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name, which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The Bible says in Revelation 5:12 “Saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honour and glory and blessing!”

There is the picture of a true believer. Who were these believers? If Jude was writing to a particular church or group of churches, he does not name the church or churches. This points toward him writing to all the believers of the first century. Apparently, the fact that Jude and James were brothers of the Lord Jesus Christ carried a lot of weight with the believers of their day. When they spoke, it made the believers stand up and take notice, for they had lived with Jesus day by day before His ministry and had experienced dramatic conversions from unbelief to staunch belief. This fact points to Jude writing to a wider audience. What he was writing was to be circulated among all the churches among all believers. In these opening words, Jude pictures just who a believer is. We can measure ourselves against his description and tell whether we are a believer.
(i) Believers are the “called” (kletois). This means several things:
(a) It means that believers are the persons who have responded to the call of the gospel. God calls man to accept the gospel. He tugs and pulls at the heart strings, convicts, and convinces man to accept Jesus Christ as His Son, but man must respond to the call of God. God cannot make the decision for man. The believer is a person who has genuinely accepted the call of God. God summoned him called him, and the believer responded. He became a believer, a person who truly believed in Jesus Christ.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said in Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Apostle Paul says in Romans 1:6-7; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 23-24; 2 Timothy 1:9 “Among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” … “To the church of God, which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.” … “But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” … “Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”
(b) It means that a believer has been called to be a saint, that is, to live a life of holiness. The word “saint” (hagios) means holy one or holiness. The believer is called to be holy, pure, and righteous just as God is.
Apostle Paul says in Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:2 “To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” … “To the church of God, which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.”
Apostle Peter says in 1 Peter 1:15 “But as He who called you is holy; you also be holy in all your conduct.”
(c) It means that the believer is called to have a heavenly hope. He is called to an eternal hope, the hope of living forever with God. He is called to be perfected and conformed to the image of the Lord Jesus Christ forever.
Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:4; Philippians 3:14 “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling.” … “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
The Bible says in Hebrews 3:1 “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.”
(d) It means that the believer is appointed to an incredibly special task and duty while on earth. He is called to serve Jesus Christ.
Apostle Paul says in Romans 1:1; 1 Corinthians 1:1; 7:20-24 “Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.” … “Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother.” … “Let each one remains in the same calling in which he was called. Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise, he who is called while free is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brethren, let each one remains with God in that state in which he was called.”
(ii) Believers are loved by God. That is, believers are beloved in God the Father. God holds them ever so close to His heart. They have accepted His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ; honoured Him by believing in Him. Therefore, God loves the believer with an incredibly special love, the love that accepts the believer and gives him the right to live in God’s presence forever and ever. Note: Greet text here is uncertain. Some have the word sanctified (hagios) instead of beloved. The sanctified person is a person who has turned away from sin and set his life apart to follow God. He is a person who is set apart unto God, a person separated from the world and its possessions and pleasures, a person who is dedicated to following God, a person who has given all he is and has to God.
(iii) Believers are “kept by Jesus Christ”. The word “kept” (teteremenois) means to be kept; to be guarded and watched after. God keeps the believer, guards, and watches over him. The believer is a person…
=> who is watched over by God;
=> who is guided and directed by God day by day;
=> who is strengthened by God to walk through all trials and temptations of life;
=> who is protected from all the enemies of life, even death;
=> who is to be escorted into heaven quicker that the blink of an eye when the time comes for him to leave this world;
=> who is given life, both abundant and eternal; and
=> who is given assurance of God’s presence and love through all of life.
The true believer is a person who is kept by God. He is a person who is looked after and cared for by God. But note: it is by Jesus Christ that God keeps a person. The believer is a person who has placed his life into Jesus Christ; he is a person who is trusting Jesus Christ to save him. It is the true believer in Jesus Christ whom God keeps.
(iv) The believer is a person who has received the mercy and peace and love of God:
(a) He has received the mercy of God.
(b) He has received the peace of God.
(c) He has received the love of God.
Let us introspect ourselves.

Like Jesus
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters (Luke 13:13 NLT).
God has predestined you to shape up into a picture of Christ on earth. Christ is the firstborn of a huge family of siblings who all bear a striking resemblance to their Father. God presses the oil of His anointing out of your life. When you forsake your will in order to be shaped into a clearer picture of Christ, you will see little drops of oil coming out in your walk and work for God. In short, He predestined pressing in your life, and as you are pressed, you gradually conform to the image of your predestined purpose.

The Promise Keeper
And the Lord said, “That’s right, and it means that I am watching, and I will certainly carry out all my plans” (Jeremiah 1:12 NLT).
God is sovereign. If He decrees something, it will surely come to pass. That doesn’t stop the evil one from trying to delay the fulfillment of what God has said, but he can’t stop it from happening. Your blessing may not come in the way you thought it would. It may not come through the person you thought it would. But if God said it, then rest assured it cannot be denied.
Sometimes we need to let go of our ideas of how things should be to see where He’s moving. If things didn’t go according to plan, ask God for His perspective. Ask Him if there is anything you need to let go of—perhaps a past disappointment—so you can see that He indeed is the Promise Keeper.

Fresh Hope
[Eve] bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed” (Genesis 4:25 NKJV).
Loss is very real and all of us will have to walk through it at certain points in life. The emotions Eve must have gone through were legitimate and valid. One of her sons was gone forever. The other was convicted of murder, which isn’t anyone’s dream for their child (see Genesis 4). The heartbreak would have gone very deep. If you’ve suffered loss or disappointment, take the time to grieve. Let God meet you in that situation and heal your heart, beloved, but don’t stay there. God has promises over your life that will not be denied. Let Him take you by the hand and lead you into the next season. Spend time inviting the Holy Spirit into your disappointment or loss today. Ask God for fresh hope for your good and beautiful future.

“Warren to Hang February 3, Says ‘Jury Did Its Best’,” Toronto Star. November 11, 1932. Page 1 & 3. ---- ‘No Fault to Find With Verdict’ – Hicks Gets 15 Years ==== WIVES IN TEARS ---- After Mr. Justice Raney had sentenced him to be hanged on Feb. 3, next, for murdering Dr. William G. More, Ewart G. Warren, 27, walked into the York assize court cell last night and said unemotionally:
‘I am feeling fine; I have no fault to find with the verdict. The jury did its best.’
His brother-in-law, Harold T. Hicks, 23, sentenced to 15 years in Portsmouth penitentiary, when convicted of manslaughter, expressed thanks to the jurymen, and entered the cell shortly behind to Warren to announce: ‘Well, boys, I got a break. I got fifteen years.’
Warren smiled in his peculiar customary manner when Mr. Justice Raney pronounced the death sentence. Hicks all but collapsed in the dock but quickly recovered, in time to be led to the cell. Fifteen minutes after the penalties were imposed, the two were on their way to the Toronto kail, incompany with three other prisoners who had been sentenced for other misdemeanors early last evening.
The jury had retired at 3.50 p.m. The verdict was returned at 8.32 p.m.
‘Stood Up Well,’ Says Father Both defence counsel, W. B. Horkins, and F. G. Gardiner, the jail chaplain, Rev. T. W. Barnett, and Capt. Wallace Bunton of the Salvation Army shook hands and conversed with Warren and Hicks before they left the city hall at about 9 o’clock. Meantime, in the corridor, the gray-haired father of Warren, who had advised the ‘boy’ to keep his head up, gripped the hands of Chief Constable D. C. Draper, Crown Prosecutor Norman B. Sommerville, K.C., Mr. Horkins, Hugh John Macdonald and several others.
‘It cannot be helped,’ remarked Mr. Warren, Sr., with tear-dimmed eyes. ‘But Ewart stood up well, didn’t he?’
The wives of Warren and Hicks and Warren’s sisters, who had retained in an ante-room, wept bitterly when the sentences were made known to them.
The jury recommended mercy for Warren.
‘You understand, of course, gentlemen,’ remarked Mr. Justice Raney, ‘that I have no opportunity to mitigate the penalty?’ Some jurors nodded their heads in assent.
At this time, Hicks grasped the dock rail, leaned forward and looked for a moment to be in the act of swooning. Warren, though very pale and tense, sat erect and stared straight ahead.
No Option, Judge Says ‘I suppose, Ewart Warren,’ his lordship said to the convicted man,’ that if the judges had any option on the matter between capital punishment and life imprisonment, there would be very sentences of death. But the judges have nothing to say about it. The law says that everyone committing murder shall, on conviction thereof, be sentenced to death.’
Warren stood with shoulders square, a smile on his face, as the death sentence was passed.
Mr. Horkins asked for a stay of execution ‘as long as you see fit,’ in view of the recommendation to mercy, so that the minister of justice and authorities might have time to be informed with a view to commutation of sentence.
‘I would suggest, my lord,’ said Mr. Sommerville, ‘that the execution be not sooner than the 15th of January.’
Warren looked toward the floor for an instant as the sentence was passed, then braced up. Sheriff’s Officer Gilbert grasped his sleeve to take him from the dock. The prisoner looked at the jurors as he passed, but there was no malice in his gaze.
Says Jury: ‘Lenient to Hicks’ ‘The jury have taken a very lenient view in Hicks’ case,’ the crown said. ‘They have been extraordinarily lenient.’
‘I’m glad they did, Mr. Sommerville,’ Mr. Justice Raney interjected.
After bowing to his counsel, Hicks left the dock and bowed again to the jury. ‘Thank you, gentlemen,’ he said, then passed out of the court and to the cell.
Shortly after four o’clock, the jury returned when Mr. Sommerville made a suggestion. His Lordship redirected the jury in reference to bodily injury, as it related to the murder charge.
At 5.17 p.m. the jurors filed into court again and wanted to know if a separate verdict could be found for each of the accused on one count.
‘I might say you could find both guilty of murder, if you so decide on the evidence, or both guilty of manslaughter; or you might find one guilty of murder and one guilty of manslaughter,’ Mr. Justice Raney directed. ‘I don’t say you could find Hicks guilty of murder if you find Warren guilty of manslaughter. But you might find Warren guilty of murder and Hicks guilty of manslaughter.’
Warren Sleeps Well In his death cell at Toronto Jail, where he will live until his executive day, February 3, guarded by a death watch of three, Warren spent his first night under sentence quietly and peacefully and arose this morning and had a good breakfast.
Warren held up better and showed more self-contriol than the officials expected. After saying good-by to his white-haired father, his wife and sisters at the city hall, Waren was taken to the jail. He was visited for a few minutes by Captain Wallace Button, J.P. of the Salvation Army, who has been his spiritual adviser and will act in that capacity during Warren’s stay in the death cell.
Warren told Captain Bunton that he was feeling all right and was satisfied with the sentence.
‘The jury could not do anything else or better under the circumstances, Warren told me,’ stated Capt. Bunton. ‘He said Justice Raney was a real gentlemen and was fair in every way. He said he was thankful to the jury for their recommendation for mercy. He said he will live in the hope that the authorities at Ottawa may see their way clear to take the recommendation into consideration.’
Harold Hicks, Warren’s brother-in-law, who was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years, may be tried for armed robbery on the five charges laid against him and Warren in connection with hold-ups of three dentists and two gasoline station operators in October, 1930, in Toronto.
‘Whether further charges will be proceeded with against Hicks, will rest with the crown attorney,’ Assistant Inspector John Chisholm stated to-day when questioned by The Star.

 We are always looking for signs, a red rose, a white rose, whatever. I remember when my mom used to call a particular book of meditations, the magic book, because when she would cut it, the words on that page gave her an answer that was particularly meaningful for her.  In this passage from the book of Luke, Jesus told the crowd listening to Him that, “This is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah...” So many people followed Jesus around, jostled to listen to Him, because He was a miracle worker, He healed the sick, He raised the dead, He multiplied bread. If Jesus came today, crowds would follow Him as well. And He would say the same thing, “This generation is an evil generation.” Not much has changed. I am still selfish, seeking my own good, instead of looking after the needs of my neighbors. I may try to be pious but do I see things the way the Lord wants me to? Am I where the Lord wants me to be?  Jesus already gave us the ultimate sign, the sign of Jonah. Of course the crowds during Jesus’ time would never have gotten the allusion, but we have the advantage of knowing what happened after Jesus was crucified. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days, Jesus stayed in the darkness of His tomb for three days. And just as He prophesied, He rose again to save us from our selfishness, and sin, and death to give us new life.  These past few years several people I’ve known have passed away from cancer, COVID and other diseases. Truly it is sad and difficult to accept that God did not heal them after we pleaded and asked for His mercy. May the families they’ve left behind be consoled by the reality that they are now with the resurrected Lord who loves them best. The Black House was a building that formerly stood at 6114 California St. in San Francisco, California, in the United States. The house was used by Anton LaVey as the headquarters of his Church of Satan from 1966 until his death in 1997. LaVey conducted Satanic seminars and rituals at the house; one of the most notorious such rituals was the Satanic baptism of his daughter Zeena Schreck in 1967, punctuated by LaVey speaking the words "Hail Zeena! In the second season of Touch, Jake and other people who have special gifts are referred to as members of the 36; throughout the episodes they are exploited for their capabilities and are hunted down by one who believes they hold too much power. The final episode features consideration of the Kabbalah and the mystical roots of the legend of the 36.
Lamedvavnik (Yiddish: למד־װאָװניק), is the Yiddish term for one of the 36 humble righteous ones or Tzadikim mentioned in kabbalah or Jewish mysticism. According to this teaching, at any given time there are at least 36 holy persons in the world who are Tzadikim. These holy people are hidden; i.e., nobody knows who they are. According to some versions of the story, they themselves may not know who they are.
For the sake of these 36 hidden saints, God preserves the world even if the rest of humanity has degenerated to the level of total barbarism. This is similar to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Hebrew Bible, where God told Abraham that he would spare the city of Sodom if there was a quorum of at least 10 righteous men. Since nobody knows who the Lamedvavniks are, not even themselves, every Jew should act as if he or she might be one of them; i.e., lead a holy and humble life and pray for the sake of fellow human beings. It is also said that one of these 36 could potentially be the Jewish Messiah if the world is ready for them to reveal themselves. Otherwise, they live and die as an ordinary person. The Eldest Curses -- Biblical Nephilim?
I have been thinking of this theory for a very long time, but I had to do tons and tons of research. I had to read the Book of Enoch, which is over 100 chapters long, and also spent an entire chapter describing how the solar system works.

Also huge shout-out to @revati3008 Ilysm you helped me with this and also managed to handle my explanation of the Book of Tobit.
I'm linking some resources I used at the end so you can read it on your own and draw your own conclusions.
As we already know, the eldest curses are the children of the Princes of Hell, specifically the oldest ones. It's been hinted at they have some powers, and I have evidence to explain how the eldest curses may be the same thing as the giants of the Nephilim from the Bible.
(Also I know there are the giant Nephilim from QOAAD that was Julian and Emma but that would be the angelic version of these!)
First, this quote from Genesis. All quotes from the Bible are the King James version, because that's the same version the Lucifer quotes were taken from.
Genesis 6:4-5 "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
Evil giants are not good, and then soon after this, God just floods the Earth and kills almost everyone. It's been said that this was because of the Nephilim, and we can look to the Book of Enoch for more information on this.
Enoch 7:11-15 is "And the women conceiving brought forth giants, Whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These devoured all which the labour of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them; When they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them; And began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, and to drink their blood Then the earth reproved the unrighteous."
I saw another quote that caught my eye, which was Enoch 6:10, "But you, ye unholy, shall be accursed."
Along with this quote, Enoch 6:6, "Therefore your days shall you curse, and the years of your lives shall perish; perpetual execration shall be multiplied, and you shall not obtain mercy."
Cursed, eh? This was also referring to the same giants earlier, the sons of the fallen angels.
Who are these fallen angels? You might be asking. Well, let's look at the Book of Enoch.
Enoch 7:9 "These are the names of their chiefs: Samyaza, who was their leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel, Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel, Saraknyal, Asael, Armers, Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Samsaveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael, Arazyal. [Azazel is in here somewhere I totally forget which one is supposed to be him, sorry.] These were the prefects of the two hundred angels, and the remainder were all with them."
Samyaza is supposed to be the angel of pride, similar to Lucifer. For some reason my mind went straight to this quote from Magnus, when he was talking to Asmodeus in one episode of the TV show. (It was 3.10 in case anyone's wondering.) "The kind of man whose love for his chosen son might outweigh his pride."
Even if this was on the show, Asmodeus was shown to be proud of Magnus in the book. Coincidence? I think not!
And there was Azazel, who gave weapons to man. His punishment? To be chained up in Dudael.
Enoch 10:6 "Again the Lord said to Raphael, Bind Azazyel hand and foot; cast him into darkness; and opening the desert which is in Dudael, cast him in there."
What's interesting is that the angel was Raphael. Raphael is an archangel who only appears in apocrypha books of the Bible, which is Enoch and Tobit. He also appears in Paradise Lost.
And then there's this quote, which really caught my eye. It's Enoch 94:3, "The righteous shall not fear the wicked; because God will again bring them into your power, that you may avenge yourselves of them according to your pleasure."
First, the word "wicked." And then the use of righteous made me think of a certain quote from Asmodues in TRSM, on page 308, "He was born to righteousness, and you were born to night everlasting." The eldest curses being the dark mirror of the Shadowhunters seems likely.
The word "wicked" is also used a lot in the Book of Enoch.
The Book of Enoch also deals with an order of angels called the "Grigori."
According to a passage from the Shadowhunter's Codex, the Silent Brothers are occasionally called this. But it's mainly archiac. Still interesting, though.
A lot of the fallen angels in this book were chained up, not just Azazel. Which made me think of the quote that started off The Lost Book of the White.
"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains in darkness into the judgment of the great day." - Jude 1:6
@patalliumapples summed it up pretty well when she said, "ok so in stupid terms god has angels that defied him and left where they belonged chained up to wait for the day of judgement."
Like as if it had the same effects as the Sventhorn . . . As if Hell is a prison for demons. So what the eldest curses are used to free Lucifer, as they turn into the demonic giants of themselves.
Under the influence of the Sventhorn, in one of Magnus's dreams, he dreamt he was a giant.
Also in one of @foxglove-airmid's flower card analysis on Tessa, apparently her flower (red verbena) has some associations with Lucifer. It's said to be powerful enough to summon Lucifer. Tessa is also an eldest curse.

To quote Pathfinder Bestiary 2: “ Certain animals, particularly those associated with scavenging activities (such as hyenas, buzzards, or jackals) or parasitism (like lampreys or ticks) specifically do not have agathions associated with them—these animals are not intrinsically evil, but their habits and ecological niches are far from the noble and proud traditions that most of the souls who seek enlightenment upon Nirvana would associate with themselves.” Bull. There’s enough people in the real world that love “unlovable” animals that contrarian souls would seek to associate with them upon death and incarnation into a perfect spiritual being.
In D&D and Pathfinder both, hyenas are linked strongly to gnolls, which are usually among the most evil of humanoids, and almost universally demon worshipers. So I wanted to incorporate that hyenas = gnolls = demons line of thought into the text explicitly. If you’re looking for an excuse to have a tribe of good gnolls in your otherwise traditional game, here’s an option. The sin eater ability literally came to me in a dream, and the atonement-focused flavor text is inspired by The Avatar’s Handbook’s Hallowed class of angels.]
Agathion, Crocuttal CR 10 NG Outsider (extraplanar) This creature resembles a humanoid hyena a head taller than a man, with a strong neck and clawed hands. Despite its ferocity, it has a sense of purpose and calm, rather than mindless savagery.
Crocuttals are benevolent outsiders of hyena-like aspect. They embody virtues demonstrated by hyena behavior—cooperation and communication, flexibility and standing up to the powerful. They are highly social, and are almost never found alone. Even a crocuttal without a pack will find a group of like-minded creatures to band together with, and they may join adventuring parties for a time as allies.
In combat, a crocuttal is fierce, but not without mercy. They work together, supplementing each others’ martial prowess with spell-like abilities—they tend to take turns acting as casting support, with the pack member focusing on magic alternating from battle to battle. Although they will soften foes up at a distance using bows and spells, crocuttals prefer close combat. Their usual strategy is to knock a foe to the ground and tear into it until it stops moving. One crocuttal takes some time to stabilize and shield the fallen, as the pack moves onto the next target.
An evil creature rendered unconscious by a crocuttal is given supernatural visions of their wickedness, and offered the chance to atone and change their alignment. This is in fact the purpose of the crocuttals—they are the rare example of an agathion molded more by mortal desire than the needs of the empyreal lords. The first crocuttals were created from the souls of a band of adventurers who died attempting to redeem a pack of gnolls from the worship of demons. Although they failed in the broad scope, they had successfully converted a few of the individuals, and argued that they should get a chance to continue that work. Now, crocuttals can be created from the souls of any goodly creature that cares to fight for the cause of redemption. A lone crocuttal may infiltrate a pack of gnolls to make friends and allies, confronting their leadership and offering a choice between the hard work of salvation and the quick release of death. Every soul that avoids descending to the Lower Planes is a mark in the crocuttal’s favor, and some of the redeemed will become crocuttals themselves after they die, continuing the cycle. Demon lords and other archfiends hate crocuttals, even more than they do many other good outsiders, and target them for death when their activities become known.

Four decades.
Four decades since Geralt had buried his best friend and the man he loved more than anything.
It was too long without him. Geralt had never spent more than a couple of months without Jaskier. He had always known he would get to see him again some day. His smile, his eyes, his ridiculously bright doublets that he had worn even in old age. Now he knew he wouldn’t see any of that ever again. Not tomorrow, not in spring, not even another four decades from now.
Four decades were too long.
At the same time, four decades were far too little time. They said time healed all wounds. When would enough time have passed to heal the wound that Jaskier had ripped into his chest when he had left him? That hole that kept bleeding and aching even after all this time?
The answer was a cold certainty inside Geralt’s chest. Never. There would never come a time when Geralt wouldn’t announce that he was about to make camp, as if Jaskier were there to hear. There would never come a day when Geralt wouldn’t point at a pretty bird or flower, as if Jaskier were still there to delight in the thing he saw.
Those brief moments in which Geralt forgot however briefly that he was alone were exhilarating, only to have him crash down when reality set back in and forced images of Jaskier’s lifeless body into his mind.
Geralt had promised himself that never again would he watch anyone die if he could prevent it.
He couldn’t prevent it. Far too often was he too slow, too weak, too late. He had watched far too many people to count die and yet they all stayed in his memory, seared into his mind like a brand marking him as the one who had failed them all. Peasants, merchants, hunters. A mother and her son that had probably been too young to even understand what was going on. Perhaps that had been a mercy.
No. There was no such thing as mercy. It had been on Geralt to save them and he had failed.
For a brief moment, Geralt had been foolish enough to hope. Relief had roared through him like a blazing fire when he had heard found the beast, had heard the boy’s heartbeat and thought for just a moment that he hadn’t been too late, that he’d still be able to save the child. It would have been ugly to get him to understand that his mother was dead and that he had to come with Geralt, that he would bring him back to his father where he was safe. Because Geralt wouldn’t have been able to promise him safety with him. Maybe the boy would have started crying then. Maybe he would have wanted to stay with his mother, not understanding why she wouldn’t get up again. Geralt would have told him not to look at her, not to do that to himself. Maybe he would have told the boy to look at him instead, but that would have only made it worse for the child, wouldn’t it? He had been so brave. No screaming, no crying, no stench of fear. Or perhaps there had been fear. Perhaps the boy had been terrified, of the beast, of Geralt but the coppery smell of his blood had drowned that out.
It didn’t matter now whether the boy would have been afraid if he had seen Geralt’s eyes. Geralt would never get to find out how that brave little child would have reacted. He had failed. He had let him die.
He could have just gone back to the town and told the man that had begged him to bring his child back safely where their bodies lay and be done with it. Instead, he had carried them back to the small hut at the edge of town. He had watched the man’s face twist into a grimace of pain as he had laid eyes on his dead family.
Geralt hadn’t been able to look away as the stranger, who in that moment felt like a mirror image of Geralt, cried and clutched his son’s small body to his chest.
When the man had looked back up at Geralt, he hadn’t shouted, hadn’t screamed and spat at him. He had been too broken for that. But Geralt had seen it in his eyes. The man had blamed Geralt, hated him, wished he would have been the one to die instead.
If Jaskier knew that Geralt agreed, he would have hated Geralt as well.
But Jaskier wasn’t here and Geralt was left to carry the weight of what he hadn’t been able to do on his own.
For so long Geralt had carried it, but it didn’t get any lighter, if anything the weight of his guilt got heavier and heavier the longer he lived, the more people he let die. The memory of the child – the light in its eyes dying before Geralt was even close enough to discern the colour of them – stayed with him, accusing him of things he wished he could deny.
There was only one way for Geralt to repent, for him to make this better. He threw himself into contract after contract. Recklessness and desperation, that Vesemir would have been angry to see him succumb to, were guiding his sword.
The weight of the guilt that was threatening to crush him didn’t subside.
The only thing that changed, was the tapestry of scars littering his body, each angry red line like a tally torn into his skin keeping count of his failings. All the times he could and should have died instead of letting that fate befall someone else. No matter how many monsters he slew and how many people he saved, those marks would still be there. Never fading. Never letting him forget.
Nothing could make him forget. He knew that. He knew it was impossible to get drunk enough on human ale to free himself of the guilt. That didn’t stop him from trying.
It made things worse. All it did was make him pathetically wish there was someone there trying to steal a sip of his drink or sing to him while Geralt used the ale to hide his smile.
There was no smile on Geralt’s face now. Neither was there anyone who would have given him one.
Instead of music, frustrated voices filled the tavern. Geralt didn’t know why he listened in. Perhaps it was years of experience telling him that raised voices meant trouble for him. Or maybe it was the insistent voice in the back of his mind telling him that Jaskier would be disappointed if Geralt didn’t bring him the latest gossip.
The more he listened, the more his heart ached. Oh, Jaskier would have loved this. Tales of an earl or viscount or something like that, who was utterly unfit to rule for being a dreamer. Rumours about how he kept humming to himself instead of listening to his advisors when they brought forth the grievances of the people. One woman even said that she heard the lord had the habit of doodling horses of all things onto important documents.
Maybe Jaskier would have laughed at this and nudged Geralt in the ribs claiming that Geralt had met his match when it came to his love for horses. Maybe Jaskier would have thought these rumours romantic and spun a bittersweet ballad out of it about a trapped lord yearning for life outside of his castle walls. Or perhaps he would have composed a sharp-tongued ditty insulting the lord for how little he seemed to care about his subjects. Either way, Geralt was sure he would have been able to make everyone in this tavern sigh and smile and forget their worries for a while.
As it were, there was no one here to make anyone forget their worries. The air grew thick as frustration turned into anger. Geralt had witnessed this change often enough to know that it was better to leave now before the contempt for an untouchable lord turned towards someone – a witcher - a mob would be able to insult and hurt without anyone batting an eye.
So Geralt downed the last of his ale and left the tavern. He had just lead Roach out of the stables she had been in, when his retreat was stopped. Not by a mob, not even by a single drunken man who itched for a fight and got reckless in his drunkenness. No, he was halted by a man with slicked back hair, fanciful clothes and an air of importance about him.
Geralt scowled at him. It didn’t seem to deter the man, though he did let his eyes wander disdainfully over Geralt’s appearance.
“Sir Witcher?”
Geralt snorted. He didn’t know what was more ridiculous: The honourable or the fact that the man thought it necessary to ask whether the slit-pupiled freak in front of him really was a witcher.
Geralt didn’t give an answer, but evidently one wasn’t needed anyway.
“I have come to summon you to Viscount Alfred Pa-“
“No,” Geralt cut him off harshly.
This time, the man stumbled a bit over his words, evidently not used to being interrupted. His brows drew together and his eyes narrowed.
“Sir, I must ask you to come to –“
“You can ask but the answer is no. Unless there is a contract for me, but I haven’t heard anyone speak of monsters, so I doubt it.”
The tension in the face of what must be some sort of page or messenger - or whatever fancy title those people had – eased at that and bled into relief.
“As it happens, the Viscount does have a contract.” He left a pause, giving Geralt a chance to bid him to continue. Geralt let the opportunity pass but the messenger continued even so. “There has been conflict brewing with the neighbouring earldom. They demand – “
“I don’t care.” Geralt turned to Roach.
“But sir! Viscount Alfred the fifth requests that you speak with him personally. I assure you you would receive adequate pay. Perhaps you could –“
“Don’t care,” Geralt repeated, more harshly this time. He swung himself up onto Roach’s saddle. By the outraged noise the messenger made, he must have had to jump back to not get hit by Geralt’s leg. Geralt took the reins in hand and looked down on the messenger who was glaring daggers at him. “You can tell this Viscount of yours that witchers won’t solve his problems. We are neutral. Don’t care about petty human affairs or politics.”
Something almost desperate flashed through the messenger’s eyes. “How can you not care? There must be something that makes you have a little compassion. If not money, then you must have a conscience.”
It took every ounce of self-control not to make Geralt flinch. He had cared once, had been made to care. There had been someone who he hadn’t minded getting involved in petty affairs for.
See where that had gotten him.
“I don’t. Maybe you haven’t heard, but Witchers don’t feel.”
With that, Geralt pressed his heels into Roach’s flanks and fled Lettenhove, leaving behind houses and roads and making his way to the forest bordering the viscounty. As soon as he was surrounded by the trees and the sounds of forest creatures flitting about, he felt some tension ease away, yet a strange chill crept up his spine, the unsettling feeling that he should know this place. Geralt couldn’t put his finger on it, but something about this place felt achingly familiar.
It was only when he decided to make camp beneath an old oak tree with branches reaching higher into the sky than any other tree, that he realised why he seemed to know this place.
Jaskier had never spoken much of the place he had grown up in and if he did, it had always been with a tenseness around his eyes and lips. It had only left when Jaskier mentioned the woods he sometimes ran away to, when everything became too much. In great detail and with shining eyes Jaskier had told him about the small river he had waded through during summer, the clearings where he had laid down and dreamed of far off places and the great oak tree he used to climb as if he was a bird trying to reach the sky. He had told Geralt how he-
Without meaning to, Geralt’s feet carried him to the tree, searching and fearing, though he didn’t know whether he feared more what he might find or what he wouldn’t find.
He didn’t need to wonder for long. Right there was the mark Jaskier had told him about so long ago. A clumsy J carved into the bark. Geralt traced the letter as tenderly as if it was Jaskier’s skin. There was no mistaking that over a century had passed since the letter had been carved, but it was still there, never forgotten.
Geralt’s hands moved on their own. Before he knew it, he held his hunting knife in hand and put it to the bark right next to the J.
He hesitated, drew back at the last minute. He had no right to carve his own mark into the bark as if he was still beside Jaskier, as if his presence next to Jaskier’s had ever done the bard any good.
He dropped the knife. His eyes were burning and he had to squeeze them shut.
“I miss you,” he whispered, a rough, choked sound. “I miss you so much. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Jask.”
He pressed his forehead against the tree, wondering if at a different time, Jaskier had done the same before leaving this place to find a better life.
Geralt’s breath came in shudders and his shoulders wrecked with dry sobs.
Witchers didn’t feel. They didn’t cry. They didn’t shatter.
There was no one around to witness Geralt do just that.

It wasn’t until months later that he heard rumours again of the viscounty he had left without a second thought.
Rumours about how the Viscount had tried and failed to come to an agreement with his foes. Of how in the end a battle had ensued that the dreamer hadn’t been prepared for. He had lost his estate, his title, his land and at with that every last shred of sympathy his people had had left for him. The only thing he had gained had been seething hatred from those he had been supposed to protect.
Geralt had been at the wrong end of a mob too many times not to know how the story would go. He didn’t need to listen to the rumours to know that the Viscount hadn’t survived.
Geralt…Geralt didn’t care. He didn’t care that he had sealed the Viscounts – the dreamer’s – fate when he had left without even hearing him out. Maybe the Viscount had still been waiting for help when his estate had gone up in flames, when the earl he had fought had taken everything from him and the people had paid the Viscounts incompetency back with pitchforks and torches.
Perhaps it would have all gone differently if Geralt had followed the messenger and spoken face to face with the lord. Perhaps it would have even been better, if he had looked the Viscount in the eyes and explained why he wouldn’t help. Or maybe seeing the Viscounts desperation in his eyes would have changed Geralt’s mind and he would have been able to prevent the bloodshed after all.
But he didn’t care. He couldn’t allow himself to.
He told himself that the violent fate of the Viscount wasn’t the reason why he sought out a contract that he knew he wouldn’t be able to finish without gaining at least one new scar. One new mark on his too long lists of lives taken by his choices.
