Good Omens & Visual Tarot - Part 1

I have been fiddling with a few different posts that are going to take a while longer still to complete. In the meantime I decided to do a little bit of a Good Omens Tarot visual analysis.

*Disclaimer* I am not a tarot expert, I am using visuals simply to equate these scenes to the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Most of the limited meaning and analysis have been pulled from various tarot websites.

I hope you enjoy looking through these! They are not super deep or intensive but were very fun to put together :) They are ordered first by Major Arcana, then Minor Arcana, and finally Court Cards.

THE FOOL

The Fool represents the willingness to take risks, being inexperienced, improvisation and beginners luck. Aziraphale and the 1941 magic debacle are very fitting for the fool card. He doesn't know he's just endangered Crowley in front of Hell, doesn't know about the miracle blocker, and what they are about to face. Teetering dangerously close to the edge of the cliff. Yet, they've just somehow successfully escaped the stage unscathed.

THE MAGICIAN

The Magician represents one's potential, and capability to harness one's potential, especially in a situation where transformation is needed. It brings to mind the change that's needed in Heaven, the work Aziraphale needs to do to fix a broken system.

THE EMPEROR

The Emperor sits on a throne, flanked by dual rams heads. This card represents leadership, power, authority, courage, and intelligence. The Emperor is considered to be someone who is very powerful. Crowley's powers and past angelic identity are still somewhat of a mystery to us, and we have good reason to believe he was indeed a powerful figure. Could this be foreshadowing as well?

THE LOVERS

While The Lovers in modern decks often has a romantic reading, traditionally this card represented a crossroads in a relationship. Choices between life paths, and commitment. Aziraphale and Crowley choosing their side at the end of season one reflects this crossroads and decision very well.

THE CHARIOT

The Chariot represents overcoming conflict and moving forward, but the charioteer is warned to be wary of the way ahead. Crowley rushing back to Aziraphale after the Book of Life threat is ready to move past their earlier conflict and move forward. But danger might lie ahead.

THE HERMIT

The Hermit represents the ability to recognize a 'teacher in a humble disguise', wisdom and enlightenment. Though it takes Aziraphale millenia, I think he eventually does recognize Crowley is a teacher or a guide in disguise for him, helping him sort through the abyss of human morality.

THE WHEEL OF (MIS)FORTUNE

The Wheel of Fortune card reminds us that life is ever changing and moving, we cannot stand on top of the wheel indefinitely, where we think we finally may see and understand things clearly, it will always turn. Looking at the Good Omens Wheel of Misfortune, it has interesting items like "going abroad" - a nod to season 3 possibly being set at least somewhat in New York?

THE TOWER

The Tower represents disaster, distress, and upheaval. There is an unforeseen catastrophe that will need to be weathered. I believe Aziraphale's emotional journey in the Job minisode exemplifies this perfectly. His realization that he has reached a turning point in his beliefs, his willingness to fall to save Jobs children and defy the Almighty... The path going forward will be difficult.

as someone who is also interested in making a persona au but is struggling, how do you decide on the more persona specific stuff? like, how do you decide on stuff like who’s which social link, what personas they have, costumes (if they have any in your au) and stuff like that? it’d be nice to hear about someone else’s thought process;;

SO! starting with general advice that will apply even outside of persona aus: the thing is that none of the assignments will ever be perfect. the inherent nature of ANY au like this is that different people will have different character opinions; for example, i'm sure there are people vehemently think my social link assignments should be different! and that's fine; your goal isn't "perfect, immutable fit", your goal is "it fits to the story i'm trying to tell". like, in general,

with that ALSO said: you shouldn't try to shove characters perfectly into roles from other things, either. two different characters will have two different reactions to Situations, and you should take advantage of that, too! it's like... the role you give a character WILL shape them, but the character will shape that role, too.

with that out of the way: specific persona au thoughts!

first, you are going to want to decide who your team will eventually be; persona squads normally start out with around three guys and end up at seven or eight (with the eighth man often being an odd-one-out). I went “the cherry blossom hill gang” in my au, which was easy, but you may have less simple ideas there! also keep in mind that you will, at least, have protagonist/healer/physical damage/magical damage as the four “basic” in-game archetypes, with persona also typically having a “balanced” guy who does both, a status setter, an instakill guy, and a party buffs guy, spread across its guys. so if that helps you here, excellent! you will also need at least one of the main party to be a navigator.

you will also want some idea of the “themes” of your au because it’ll help you out deciding personas and social links, plus a little plot.

so, first: each persona game has a “theme” for the main party personas. 3 is all greek legendary figures that evolve to greek gods (with lucia prior to ultimate personas breaking theme, and kala-nemi and messiah breaking theme with the ultimate personas). 4 is all japanese gods that evolve to another name of those same gods (with chie breaking theme in that her ultimate persona has nothing to do with her original one). 5 is all legendary rogues/thieves that evolve to trickster gods (with necronomicon breaking theme and frankly milady is a STRETCH for the starter personas, and astarte and anat being questionable for the ultimates). as the like… MANY caveats show, you don’t have to be perfectly on-theme, but having a theme at least in mind helps a lot with picking what persona everyone gets by narrowing the pool! for my au, is went “famous lovers”, since a major “theme” of my au is “isolation versus bonds”. however, you don’t have to stick to something with thematic relevance, you just want something that helps tie everyone together a little bit.

as for weapons, what elements they attack with, what their party role is like: that’s a personality call, you know? and don’t be afraid to get a little weird with it, we aren’t atlus, we CAN break character archetype.

as for social links: that’s indeed tricky! it can help to remember you don’t ACTUALLY need to come up with 22. the world/the universe is ALWAYS only the protagonists final persona. the fool is ALWAYS a plot-driven social link that effectively represents “the protagonist’s relationship with the plot”, with p3/4 making that the team, and p5 making that igor. judgement is ALWAYS a plot-driven social link that represents the protagonist at the end of their journey; in p3/4 it’s the team at the end of the plot once they know their true purpose, and in p5 it’s sae nijima as she interrogates the protagonist. so that cuts out three arcana already to be set aside as “this is for the plot”.

next, while I know this isn’t true of p3, it makes sense from our own writing perspective where our story is NOT constrained by “gameplay dictates a social link can happen at any time” to make each member of the team a social link. fill out the rest with additional canon characters.

but how to decide which character goes in which link? helpfully, this is persona: it tends to have a little less to do with personality and more to do with storyline. you can go by “what character fits the tarot symbolism best”—doc as the tower, jimmy as the hanged man—or “what character fits the normal persona character archetype for this arcana”—skizz as chariot, mumbo as moon. you can also go for a mix! if you don’t KNOW what kind of character normally fills an archetype, the megami tensei wiki has pages for each arcana that describes the typical character archetype that goes there. you can also break type as needed—joe is hermit in my au despite “hermit” not really being his persona character archetype for very specific plot/tarot reasons, for example, and impulse is emperor, but is breaking persona type by being a healer rather than a heavy physical attacker. it’s your au, have fun with it!

also, ultimately, know that because it’s your au to have fun with, if you DON’T have fun giving everyone an arcana, just pick out the ones that are relevant to the part you’re writing and ignore the rest until they come up. this is my tactic for worldbuilding in like half the aus I write it hasn’t steered me wrong yet.

Like I have once said on the blog, I will not give you a full step to step on how “selling a soul” works. If it is forbidden and dangerous, it’s for something.  But I will try to tell you why you shouldn't do it and why you should stop obsessing over it. You can basically sell a soul to any entity (so not only demons and dark energies from the low astral, but also to angels or deities). Those are only made through very specific rituals, on certain dates, under certain circumstances, etc. Do it wrongly and the consequences suffered will be the same as dying through acid. Is selling a soul worth it? No. No matter what you ask for the entity what you will have to give is far more than what you can handle. Your life certainly but also the ones of people you love (after you have seen them suffer because of it). It doesn’t matter if it is an angel. When selling your soul you become a lifeless body and no reincarnation will be possible since your spirit will simply disappear. 

Does every human have angels around them?

If we follow what is written in the Bible, Kabbalah or the Qur’an, God is with us all, and with it, so are the angels that are supposed to look over us and protect us from evil. I do believe that everyone has their own guardian angel out of the 72 written in the Kabbalah but I also believe that not everyone is connected to them due to spiritual guides that aren’t angels (spiritual guides can be human souls that have passed or haven’t incarnated, could be deities or spiritual being of the high astral). Some people will be a lot more in tune with spiritual guides instead of angels and that is okay. But if you ask me, yes I do believe that everyone has their own Angel (some even more than one) the same way they also have their opposite (low astral entity). Life is made out of balance. Light can only exist if there’s darkness. 

My dog has been more clingy around me recently. Could this potentially be my dog's way of trying to protect my me/my energy from negative energy/spirits? Or could my dog be signaling to me that something is wrong with me/my body? 

There are 4 reasons that can make a pet become more clingy all of a sudden. 1: there’s no reason, they are just seeking company: 2: their owner is indeed having a very low energy and they are trying their best to be by your side and raise your vibration higher (which the purr of a cat does very well); 3: the owner is feeling low or sick and the pet is trying to warn you about it; 4: it is the pet who is sick and trying to show you their low mood by being clingy. 

I always wondered who actually came up with tarot cards and their meanings. The symbols like lovers, hermit, swords, wards etc. do they have any deeper meaning or is it just some sort of random thoughts:

This is a very interesting question because there are two answers to this. We got the “scientific” answer made by scholars and we have the “spiritual” made by the 14th-century occultists. For the scholars: Tarot were created in Italy in mid 15- century as a card game, that later was taken by “occultists” who made propaganda with it saying they were divination tools that had originated from ancient Egypt manuscripts, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra and even the Ching which is a divination book made in China around 1000 BC. 

The spiritual reference however states indeed that the tarot has power over the future because they originated during these periods but also because the Major Arcanas were the “high secrets of the world” that were contained in the King Solomon book. Alesteir Crowley, explains that a lot in his books and research. 

One thing is certain, I believe that no matter the origin, Tarot has power. Even if it was not influenced by any pre-Christian society, they were still created by humans and for years there was power and manifestation given to the meanings in the cards, which with time stays. 

What is your opinion on egyptian zodiac signs where every person is assigned one god/goddess?

Since I am not too much into Egyptian Mythology, I don’t know much about it, but I do find it interesting. Mostly because it shows how the greatest empires and societies (Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, Roman, Arab, Maya, Celtic, ect)  in our world still believed in astrology and lived their lives based on the stars. Seeing the dead: Contrary to popular knowledge, everyone is able to see dead people to a certain extend. It is known that only "mediums" are clearly able to connect, see and talk to the dead, but even with mediums, they aren't able to contact everyone. But why's that? why are there some that are more in tune with certain dead people and others not? while it all depends on your gifts that's for sure, but also on your own spiritual energy. Some people are able to see them but not talk to them. Others are able to hear them and not see them. Some are able to see and communicate with them through dreams and some even through divination tools. The spiritual world is vast and the knowledge we have of it, is very little.

Healing through magic: Remember that life is about balance. There are spells that exist that are able to help someone heal on certain things but when practicing it, remember that the diseases you are taking away need to be put somewhere else. If you aren't able to choose someone or if your values stop you from doing it, you need to be prepared for disease to stay around you and the people that you love and care for (animals included).

Graveyard dirt: It is a powerful and energetic ingredient for certain spells and rituals. But I definitely advise you not to use anything that deals with death (ingredients, such as dirt, bones, blood, dead people accessories) if you haven't been yourself close to death. The reverse effects will be just very hard to handle if you don't know what you are dealing with

Sigils: DON'T USE SIGILS THAT YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER THEY HAVE! sigils are made through energy, when they are used, it's with intention. And, although your intuition is very important, using sigils that are used centuries ago without having a clue of what they are for, can be very dangerous. The same goes when you work with angels, demons or other deities, do not use their sigils. I won't be able to help you if you do.

Religion and Magic: Magic is seen through the eyes of religion as something made by the devil. I do believe that these beliefs are due to the monotheist religions that wanted to protrait it as the devil in other beliefs. Remember, plants and remedies are "magical" based. meds are just a scientific way to say "magical herbs". Remember that religion is something personal, and beliefs are something personal. Be connected to your high self, to your values, and practice whatever you feel comfortable with. Don't allow other people to tell you it's evil or wrong. If you feel at peace, that's the most important thing

It's Fool Ann, with Magician Yusuke. He's a little Fox in the real world, but Ann gaslights everyone that he's a weird dog named Inari

Ann's Hierophant is Sae, but she's less mother/father figure and more, parole officer. Cause she used to be one, but recently has slowed her life down, after losing her parents and an "incident" with her sister

We've got Chariot Joker, who was the discus thrower for the Shujin Track team, but his wrist was broken before the competition and the team was downsized to just Track, no Field. And Lovers Ryuji, rumoured to be "going for the other side", so. Hes an outcast

Okay rapid fire: Empress Futaba, Priestess Shiho, Justice Hifumi, and Faith Goro

Alright. And, now, for the other gals

Haru is the Emperor. She's a dancer working under a famed choreographer, but in reality Haru choreographs her own routines and gives her mentor credit. Haru wants to discover the ends and limits of the human spirit to show off in her dancing

And Hermit Makoto! She watched her parents die. Her father was a Good Cop, genuinely, a captain who worked for the people, and her mother was a lan assistant for the team looking into cognitive psience. So. They were assassinated. The research was never found, and Makoto watches her big sister slowly give up all she worked for, and, her heart distorts. Her house is a prison, and she's warden and prisoner. But, shes awaiting execution

Ann meets Haru outside a train station. Haru runs into her, and gasps all loud. Ann assumes she hurt her, the boys waiting for her to join them on the way to school, and Haru has fucking hearts in her eyes. She wants to explore this feeling, and asks Ann to dance

In the middle of the street

After they knocked each other over

They go through the palace with the leader thats definitely not Abby from Dance Moms and Haru joins the team. She's tamer with her statements of affection towards Ann, but her social link is all about dancing and not denying herself of feeling, and there would be lots of charged moments of them slow dancing to "feel the connection, Ann-chan!"

They kiss at the summer fireworks. The others are inside the convenience store buying towels, anything to dry off, and Haru dances in the rain. She holds out a hand, and Ann takes it, and they dance and laugh as they get soaked, and, stare into each other's eyes...

Ann: woah,

Haru: indeed, oh my, I don't think I've ever, felt so elated before,

They don't have time to put it in words, because Medjed happens, and Ann receives some texts from a "Justicia". Then, they find out Sae's sister has been living in her basement this whole time, still recovering from watching their parents go off a bridge. She's scared of people, and sounds like a conspiracy theorist, and they decide to steal her heart

They meet two shadow Makoto's in her Palace. Or, rather, her shadow has two forms. The Warden Makoto is her age, resolute in the fact that the government wouldn't have turned on her parents if they hadn't talked about switching careers for Makoto's sake, to be around for her more. Then there's Prisoner Makoto, on "death row".

Prisoner Shadow Makoto is the age she was when her parents died, so like, 12. Small, accepting of her fate, scared. So, so scared.

Anyways she changes her own heart with help, and remembers where the old research was, and talks to Sae about therapy, to get back her life

She helps them with Medjed, first. If she can hack into government databanks to try to find research her mom helped with, she can stop whatever is happening. After that, she falls asleep, holding the "weird dog" Inari, leaning against Ann

Something flutters in her chest. It's the same feeling she got dancing with Haru, but... She's already pretty much in a relationship,

She talks to her Priestess, Shiho, and Shiho admits that sometimes things aren't, cookie cutter perfect. Like, she's already dating a girl, public opinion be damned. Why not add another in?

Ann and Haru talk. About them, and what they want, and, about their new teammate. Who, at that time, is still spending a lot of time recovering from her awakening. They put off adding relationship stress to her plate, but, spend time with her as she gets better

Makoto falls slower, by comparison. She doesn't really know when her heart started to warm up when she'd wake up to one or both of them already in her basement room. But she smiles more, and slowly opens up. Ann feels her heart explode when she walks down the steps after putting away their dinner plates and finding Makoto sleeping already, all leaned against a starstruck Haru

The three work it out before summer ends. Makoto's already graduated from online high school, and Haru and Ann go to different schools, so their afternoons and evenings are precious. Makoto has more reason to push herself in therapy, to be able to go on dates with her beautiful girlfriends

Sleepovers happen a whole lot. Haru lives alone, and Ann is in a shop attic, so, basement sleepovers! The three sharing sleepy kisses, maybe even getting matching pjs. All three are touch starved, so there's a lot of time spent lying around together while doing their own things

Caitlyn Kiramman’s Keys of Truth

Oooh, I accidentally found another Tarot reference in Arcane! Look! V. The Hierophant has the Kiramman logo on it. 

Could this be intentional? Let’s see. The crossed keys are the papal symbol. And indeed, the 5th major Arcana in the Tarot is sometimes referred to as the Pope or the Teacher.

My favorite explanation for the key symbolic on the Hierophant is that they are the “keys of knowledge” from Bluebeard. Remember that story? Bluebeard must travel away, and he leaves the house keys to his wife, telling her NOT TO USE the little key that opens the last room upstairs. EVER. 

Bluebeard by Gustave Doré

She invites her sister over and asks her to watch for Bluebeard’s return while she opens the mysterious forbidden door. Behind it, she finds grim evidence that Bluebeard has murdered all of his ex wives. She locks the door back and tries to pretend she never saw anything, but the key is magical and covers itself in blood (representing knowledge of her husband’s crimes) that can’t be washed away, no matter how hard she tries. Bluebeard returns. When he sees the bloody keys, he knows that she knows: he must kill her, like the others. Thankfully, her sister had called their brothers and they manage to kill him first, thus ending the murderous cycle.

The crossed keys of the Hierophant are a cautionary tale: those who seek knowledge will find it, but they must first ready their hearts, minds and souls to face it, for knowledge can never be unlearned. 

OH LOOK! "The Truth" Tarot card on Cait's investigation board.

The story fits Caitlyn’s arc beautifully. She seeks to know the truth. Marcus forbids her from investigating. Her family gets her fired.

Still, Caitlyn crosses any and all forbidden lines, to find what lies beyond. 

But once she sees… 

She can never un-see. Marcus knows that she knows. She must be killed.

She survives, but she now knows of Piltover's guilt and corruption. She can never un-know AND OH MY GOD THE KEYS ARE COVERED IN BLOOD! 

That’s it folks! Cait is now confirmed to be V. The Hierophant.

We also know that Vi is VI. The Lovers and Viktor is I. The Magician. Hmm... Did Fortiche associate a Major Arcana to each league champion?

The one thing about Akechi having Loki be stronger because of Akira that doesn't pan out is the Arcana. Also there's how Loki wasn't exactly unlocked via a social link, but, even so. Ignoring that part.

A fun idea is that each person sees other people as different Arcana. Just because a person fills one role in one person's journey, doesn't mean that they can't have a different role for someone else.

Now, Akira is a Fool. That's his Arcana. But... it's also indicative of him being the chosen (by Igor/Yaldy) protagonist.

But, to Akechi, what would Akira be? What Arcana in his journey?

It's easy just to say "Fool" and I don't think it'd even be wrong. Akira is someone who opens up infinite possibilities for Akechi, in many ways, but in that respect, he could equally be a Magician, or the Lovers (a choice, to reject Shido or keep going).

Ultimately the one I keep going back to is that Akira and Akechi both form each other's Justice.

For Akira, it's shown in the story. Akechi shows up and challenges him, publicly, about what the Phantom Thieves stand for and what they're capable of doing. Then he continues to challenge him in different ways, even in the third semester, showing them how their ideas of Justice are still rather naive at times.

For Akechi, I think it's the same. The guy he's just started following in the Metaverse, who has no idea what he's doing or us capable of, challenges him on live TV and tells him "your justice sucks, the police suck." He then goes on to show him that his ideals aren't built on insubstantial things, and that he's smart enough to keep up. Akira, to him, I think he represents a better form of Justice, one that doesn't leave people behind if it can help it, even if Akechi still sees it as too soft, too naive, not practical enough.

They're two very different ideas of how Justice works, and it's only by them coming together that the Phantom Thieves stay on course like they do.

And as for "wait, but don't they usually get an Arcana that matches their own pretty soon...? What about Akechi's sense of justice?" I mean, what indeed? By the time P5R starts, Akechi's idea of justice is mainly "an eye for an eye, make them suffer as you have, it doesn't matter what you do as long as the goal is achieved" (note: this is where Call of Chaos comes from!). So yeah, his sense of justice has literally been directionless and going the wrong way for years at this point.

Hawkins does indeed meditate. Usually first thing in the morning along with some yoga to center himself before leaving his quarters to face the day. He did a lot more of it during the alliance with the Kid Pirates and On-Air Pirates because he needed to center himself a lot more before dealing with his biggest stressors.

As for being in tune with himself and personal growth, that's mostly a no. Or at least, he'll acknowledge and work on his personal shortcomings if he thinks he'll immediately gain something from it. For example, when he left Auger, he realized that most people were put-off by his lack of emotions. He didn't care so much until he realized that tactical displays of emotion could be useful, especially for manipulation. So he sought to learn how to express himself a bit more, or at least mimic others enough to more easily navigate social situations and turn them in his favor.

Unfortunately, he's too stubborn and closeted to be in tune to himself enough to acknowledge his bisexuality.

The Lovers: What do they consider to be the "perfect partner", be it romantic, platonic, alterous, etc.? Is there someone like that in their life?

For romantic/sexual partners, he likes intelligence, passion, and feistiness. If he's going to be with someone, he wants to be able to actually converse with them for hours. He wants to learn and discover things from them and with them. He needs intelligence to remain interested in a person, otherwise he'll quickly discard them once they've fulfilled their purpose. This pairs especially well with someone who's passionate, especially when it's related to their hobbies or goals. Hawkins especially likes someone who's passionate but also knows when to be quiet. As for the feistiness...that's a bit more in NSFW territory lol. I will also note that he considers thick, luxurious hair he can run his fingers through and play with to be a very attractive physical feature.

For platonic relationships, intelligence is still key. Hawkins does not like stupid people. He appreciates intelligence and cunning. I’m bored, so I’m doing a tarot reading for how our party’s fight with the 200-ft long dragon is going to go. And my first impression? Not great.

The spread I’m using is one that reads, left to right, as “Situation, Action, Outcome”. So the first card indicates the current state of matters, then it’s the actions one can take to deal with the situation (or that we have taken), and finally what the result will be. Here we have two Major Arcana, and one Minor. The former two are the most important on the macro scale, while the last is more for today.

The chariot represents control and action, someone who is taking the reins. Inverted, it means that things are out of control. Which is entirely consistent with trying to take on a terrifying dragon who has kept armies subdued. The dragon is the one in charge, not us.

The Lovers represent harmony and relationships, and inverted is imbalance and the sense that things aren’t even and aligned in relationships. I would guess that this means our party, despite spending so much time creating our plan of attack and coordinating, will fall apart. We will be individuals rather than a team, and that will probably bite us in the butt. Or perhaps that the key will be inflicting such disharmony in the dragon (bard mental magic, GO!!).

Last card is of the Minor Arcana, where the meaning is derived from the intersection of the value and suit, here being queen and cups. Cups in general refer to emotions and creativity, while queens in an event like this tend to indicate things coming to fruition, maturing, nurturing. The Queen of Cups is then someone who is stable in the eddies of the world, comforting others who are still struggling. An inversion seems to confirm that our plan will indeed fall apart and we will need to rely on our own gumption to get out of this mess. It might even indicate that there won’t be anyone left to soothe our souls, though that’s probably too morbid a reading.

So we have a situation that is out of control, we are out of sync, and it will all fall on our shoulders to get out of this whole. Not a great reading going into a fight like this.
