foraging wildflowers for future soap making

hoping to be able to make soap as well as candles. soap making isn't hard but it's not common that commercial soaps use seasonal local ingredients

as part of my perm diploma i want to see if it's possible to make soaps entirely from local ingredients, meaning foraging wildflowers and eventually growing and pressing my own natural oils for example from pumpkin seeds

i also want to make astrologically aligned soaps and spitlight how different plants are ruled by different planets and can have different effects on our mood. but for now i need to sort theough the flowers here as there are actually some ones i can't identify.

First candle making

for a while i have wanted to make an upcycled product for design 2 of my permaculture dip so the aim is to make a bunch of these and make them seasonally with seasonal wildflowers

i just wanted to test it though with some rose petals i had. the candle is 100% natural beeswax and is scented with benzoin resin, opoponax, frankincense, cedarwood, and neroli essential oils

it could have been a bit more strongly scented and i lost a bit of the beeswax to evaporation. however otherwise overall i am pretty pleased with how it turned out though i havent lit it yet.

i actually buried a tarot reading at the base of this candle so that the idea is when it burns down you can reveal the reading. maybe i will have forgotten what i wrote by then but idk, it is for my mum so intended as a nice present.

also pure beeswax looks luscious, just saying. really excited to burn this and make some more :) also hoping to investigate the spirituality of the oils and flowers i use 🦋

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it

they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons

and musical instruments

And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses

And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

This is by no means the final version of this card or propeely drawn, just a quick watercolour doodle as an exploration of it's concept...

The deck explores scenes in an abandoned future without mankind as nature and our old technologies intertwine

The project hopes to prompt thought about the non linear nature of the natural world and how this compares and sits next to the intuitive nature of tarot. Has the industrialised world interrupted both the rhythms of nature and severed us from our intuitive natures? And can tarot help us reconnect?

Very simply, these give a more cut and dried response. For example, the four of hearts indicates what's needed now is solid emotional stability. However, the 9 of spades (which corresponds to swords) indicates you want something more complex and potentially risky mentally, something that may cause upheaval.

HOWEVER the result - the King of hearts - indicates a strong and assertive balance between emotions and you mental desires that can actually lead to you becoming more ready to take on challenges.

Personal experience: yes.

So I did a reading to see why...

What I vaguely get from this is that no matter how great the energy is, the blocks that there are will be occluded or concealed from you. Thus you can get around them less easily.

The Popess corresponds to the High Priestess meaning anything occult or occluded, or hidden knowledge or information. So there's that.

How have I seen this manifest?

♣︎ WAY less synchronicities. Normally when I read I get synchronicities in my spreads letting me synthesize the different parts and see the overall picture. In a sense, tarot reading involves communication so it's natural it breaks down. There are just less patterns during mercury retrograde and it makes it harder to work out the meaning of a reading

♠︎ Spiritual brain fog. I find my intuition is just waaay down during Mercury Retrograde. So there's that...

Alchemical Symbolism In The Tarot | Part 1

One interpretation of alchemy (by Carl Jung, whose work inspired the MBTI) is that it represents the process of individuation (development of a full fledged adult personality).

One alchemical symbol that has suggested links to the tarot is that of the green lion eating the sun. There are a few symbolic means of this and most of them are to do with the sun as the ego or consciousness and the green lion as a greater spiritual self that devours it (symbolising ego death as a stage in the journey to individuation)

Does The Alchemical Lion Have Any Connection To The Strength Card?

I did wonder this as the sign Leo is also about ego and the strength card CAN (in some interpretations) represent us suppressing or trying to tame our emotional selves, subconscious mind, or shadow (which is why shadow work is so hard!)

Even good cards can have 'double edged sword' explanations (just like 'bad' cards). Strength can be a great card to get if you need strength in the classic way to get through difficult times. But sometimes it's important to use less strength over ourselves and just let things be. The emotional water signs (pisces, cancer, and often scorpio) tend to be best at this, as do NP and SP mbti types. Essentially, instead of taming the lion on the card, what about just letting it be? This can be an interpretation of the best course of action when strength reversed shows up. In some ways, this is part of the process of shadow work.

*this is not to say Leos are really ego driven! Ultimately every sign is to some extent. However many people do believe that there are connections between tarot, astrology, and alchemy, which is ngl super interesting and something I am planning on doing more posts on- so the same animal symbolism appearing across disciplines felt worth mentioning.
