Imagine you're Lan Xichen. You've spent the past decade+ worrying about your younger brother who, according to your own perspective on things, fell wildly in love with an evil heretic cultivator, kinda betrayed your sect for him, got punished within an inch of his life by your elders, and spent subsequent years in mourning when said evil heretic cultivator got killed.
You're starting to think that your brother is never going to get over this, is always going to be holding onto a certain amount of grief and anger and lonesome distance.
But then one day, he brings another guy home! And, yes, this guy is not perfect either. He's also a heretic cultivator and a notorious lunatic, who is in a bad position with your own situationship. But! Maybe Wangji is finally starting to move on? Even if his bad taste persists, this one is at least more manageable. How fortuitous that your stubborn, obsessive brother should finally find a new yeah no that's Wei Wuxian, isn't it?
It's just Wei Wuxian again.

Lan Wangji Goes To Lotus Pier AU: Part 4: Deranged Bedfellows
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4.5)
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#mdzs au#lan wangji#nie huaisang#Yungmeng Jiang training arc AU#This is the *first* part of what was supposed to be a much longer comic (LWJ's morning routine in full).#I'll finish the remaining part as a reblog to this post! I just think this is the funnier chunk.#Lan Wangji absolutely is the kind of person who has a perfect internal alarm clock for when it is time to get up.#He already has a dedicated sleep schedule. He is accurate within 10 seconds of 5am every day.#I think the Jiang disciples are most likely used to waking up around 6:00-7:00am#But the allure of having a guaranteed time keeper getting you up in the morning is worth the earlier hour.#I imagine they started outside lwj's door and slowly moved closer as the weeks went on.#Now LWJ has to cope with being way too warm in the night from all the extra body heat.#LWJ is not a fan of this but they scamper off immediately after he wakes up and they at least show initiative to follow routine.#NHS joins in only because he is a chronically heavy sleeper and needs this level of intervention to get up early.#His boldness would be a death sentence in the cloud recesses but here? Whole new game.#Yungmeng Jiang isn't a lawless land. It's just a land with different laws.#And one of those laws is to forcefully domesticate the catboy coded Lan boy through any means necessary.#Completely different tangent: I drew the thumbnail for this before I did comic 134. I then realized they had the same visual gag.#So I had to space this one out so it didn't seem like I repeated the waking up joke. That's my secret and all of you have to keep it.#And in my land the law is that snitches get itches (telepathically transfers hives onto your body)

oh my darling, i am so very glad you are alive
[ALT ID: A digital illustration in soft browns and yellows of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian from MDZS. Lan Wangji is kneeling with a cup of steaming tea in his hands and his hair neatly pulled back while Wei Wuxian is draped over his shoulder, clutching his arm and still wrapped in a blanket. His eyes are closed and he appears to be whining while Lan Wangji looks at him with a small smile.]

jiang cheng is a funny character because i fully support either liking him or not liking him, but i see so many takes (especially when he shows up in a supporting role in fic) that seem completely unhinged until i pin down which of what i consider the fundamental facts of his character are just not being applied at all.
it’s like:
1) this is not a mentally well guy, especially after Plot starts happening, and he spends the entire story getting less okay. the only time we ever see any improvement happen in jiang cheng is when wei wuxian piths himself getting the guy out of his suicidal phase, causing many more problems going forward but fixing that one. jiang cheng is not okay and it’s all downhill.
2) he cares so fucking much. like you can write a jiang cheng who is a deeply selfish bastard and you have an excellent textual basis, but it's not because he doesn't care about other people, at least the ones that are his; that's a different kind of problem than the one he has.
he would in fact be less of a problem a lot of the time if he cared less, because he does not have the emotional management tools to be useful about it. also the narrative is conspiring against him but like.
(there are a lot of ways to be selfish and jiang cheng and lan wangji are actually remarkably similar in the basic type of selfish impulses they have. they just have very different childhoods and values shaping how they act about it. and then lan wangji manages to become a mostly functional adult, while jiang cheng is generously an electrified pile of bad coping mechanisms. he's functioning! but like. at what cost.)
3) jiang cheng is dutiful. even the most selfish jiang cheng is someone who perceives and values himself in terms of his function and obligation; he and wei wuxian have different personalities and worldviews, and for that matter expectations placed on them, but they both learned that lesson, presumably together.
4) sort of an extension of 1 and to a lesser extent 2, Jiang Cheng is emotionally insecure as a base state. his parents made some major errors, at least half of which should have been avoidable except they would have had to deal with their own shit first.
it's not out of the question, in a different lifetime where he didn't get several years of compounded irresolvable traumas as his coming-of-age present and then left alone to stew in pain and denial for over a decade, for him to have learned to handle it better and even mostly get over it! that could have happened! it just didn't.
to an extent he's insecure about different things as a grown man than he was as a boy, life experience makes a difference. he's built confidence about some things and become absolutely shattered about others. but he's a person who is easy to wound, in all kinds of complicated identity-related ways, especially by Wei Wuxian specifically, and his kneejerk response to that is to lash out in reply, whether the wounding was intentional or not.
the fact that Wei Wuxian spent most of their lives giving every evidence of being completely immune to being harmed by this reaction masked its toxicity until things got real ugly real fast.
jiang cheng absolutely has the capacity to not do this! it's a deeply rooted bad habit, not actually a fundamental of his character. but it requires self-awareness, will, and (if he's going to keep it up) a lot of practice. it's not the kind of thing that just goes away on its own, even with a bunch of alterations in context.
i don’t have like a closing argument here i just keep finding that takes on jiang cheng that don’t work for me, whether generous or condemnatory, always seem to disagree with me on one of these main points.

Sangcheng week Day 2 - Music
Even with all the effort that Nie-zongzhu put into not cultivating properly with the Nie sabers, he still starts suffering from Qi deviations just like his predecessors, due to accumulated heart demons from the past decade. He vehemently refuses to be treated with the song of clarity for the longest time and only finally relents when he is promised to be held through it and kept safe by his beloved.
(this time i went with the live-action flavour because i never tried that before and it was pretty fun change actually haha)

one thing about the core reveal scene is that it's one of the only times someone defends wei wuxian just out of like. anger and contempt. there's the desperate way that jiang cheng protects wei wuxian from his mother and the wens, and the gentle quiet way that lan wangji stands up for wei wuxian against the world, but it is So endlessly refreshing to see someone just be fucking mad that wei wuxian is being mistreated. wen nings fearsome, righteous anger is so good especially considering that wen ning is a character who so rarely ever let's himself show any anger at all, even when he has so much to be angry about
and he doesn't even get angry in a reserved, polite way either he literally tells jiang cheng to his face that he will never be as good as wei wuxian. saying that serves absolutely no purpose other than to hurt him. it doesn't reveal anything more about the core, its not a cold truth that jiang cheng needs to learn, it's not even really something that strictly Defends wei wuxian against anything. he literally just says it because he Knows it's exactly the thing that will hurt the most, and in that moment what wen ning wants to do is to hurt jiang cheng. and it's delicious

I totally get people wanting to write characters as asexual, and that is completely valid, I just find it hilarious when people write Lan Wangji as asexual.
The man who had a dream about shoving the most beautiful, annoying, trouble making cultivator to the floor and fucking him into oblivion in his own clan's public library.
The man who, first chance he got, shoved that same beautiful, annoying, troublemaking cultivator against a tree and all but tongue fucked his mouth.
The same man who constantly horny grips™️ his sword because he is probably trying to restrain himself from tearing off his crushes robes and slamming him into the ground, against a wall, a tree, any where he can.
The same man who tied his ribbon around his crushes wrists whenever he could, the same man who fucked his zhī jǐ on the ground behind a bush because he couldn't wait any longer.
That man? As asexual? Is just hilarious to me.

With Wei Wuxian trapped in the Cold Springs and fearing the Lan elders hunting him, Lan Sizhui ran deeper in the mountains of the Cloud Recesses.
The cloud folk followed close behind, their presence like cold air to his senses. Soon they had driven him against a wall of stone, thousands of written lines carved deep into its skin. At the edge of his vision, he saw them move, writhe as if trying to reach for him.
The bearded Lan elder pressed him closer to that wall. “You cannot hurt me,” he exclaimed, holding Bichen up to the light. “I am of Lan Wangji’s blood, I am her son. I am Lan Sizhui.”
“We know none by that name,” the elder said once more, repeating what he had said when Lan Sizhui had first arrived. But this time, instead of turning him away from the gates, the elder drew his sword.
In a moment, clouds had drifted between them, obscuring him from their view. He stumbled back towards the stone wall. But curling tendrils wrapped around him, guiding him away from the carved lines that reached for him. To his surprise, he discovered the cloud nearest him was drifting apart. But before he could fear his cover vanishing, he saw how the scraps of white leapt and twisted about him with life of their own.
Cloud rabbits, Lan Sizhui recognized with, swift and wary. Their heads turned and their ears rose, pointing him away from the cloud-shrouded Lans and to a crack in the stone wall he had not seen. It ran from top to bottom, as though struck by a furious hand. And in that crack lay the narrowest path up.
A cloud rabbit leapt before him and onto the first step before regarding him with silent eyes.
He remembered his mother would summon them, in the early morning when the mist hung over his father’s river. Jiang Cheng would send ripples of water to make the clouds eddy, his laughter echoed in the rush of the currents. With a smile, Lan Wangji would merely make her rabbits faster and more agile. But Lan Sizhui had never seen them among the cloudy peaks they had been born from.
Even now she was protecting him in the only way she could. He tightened his grip around Bichen and followed where the rabbits led.

Behind him, there is movement. The sharp, sudden clang of metal against metal. Lan Wangji glances briefly over his shoulder.
Perhaps predictably, Su She has decided to try and strike at his exposed back, like the dishonorable coward he is. A fool, as well, for having apparently forgotten the presence of the Ghost General despite insulting the man only a moment ago. The tip of Su She’s blade is trembling against one of Wen Ning’s chain-wrapped forearms, the trailing length of those chains pooling at his feet where they writhe like twisting like snakes, rearing to strike. Lan Wangji’s next breath brings with it the tang of resentful energy. He has already turned his attention back to the scroll.
There is more movement, though Lan Wangji doesn’t pay enough attention to discern what exactly may be happening. Wen Ning’s presence stays at his back, cool and steady as a fortress wall. “You!” Su She’s voice reaches an irritating pitch. “How dare you, you think even you have the right to look down on me?!” He makes a noise not unlike a wild boar before it charges. “You aren’t even human! I thought Lan Wangji was the most arrogant man I’d ever met, but you clearly outclass him there. You’re nothing but the Yiling Patriarch’s dog! Undead servant mutt!”
That, at last, gets Lan Wangji to pay more than a sparse fraction of attention. He has to peer around Wen Ning, who is still standing between them, a marble pillar separating Lan Wangji from Su Minshan. And, it would seem, the embarrassing clump of Moling Su and Lanling Jin cultivators slowly filling the cavern. “Dog?” Lan Wangji repeats, softly. Wen Ning does not visibly shift, but the black veins in his neck pulse, just once, ever so faintly. Resentment in the air smells like tar, sharp and thick.
Su She’s disciples pick up his call, loudly proclaiming the contemptible nature of the Ghost General, the Yiling Patriarch’s filthy, flea-ridden Wen-dog bitch, unfit to be even called a servant by way of his inhuman nature. Lan Wangji listens to very little of it. His eyes are on the part of Wen Ning’s face he can see from this angle, smooth and jade-pale as a porcelain mask, almost colorless in the low light if not for the yawning blackness of his eyes.
“You think he’s your dog, too?” Su She’s voice reaches a new and grating pitch, all inflated self-importance. “Hanguang-Jun, your arrogance knows no bounds! He’ll bite you the second his master has no use for you anymore. You’re not special, you’ve only fallen for the Yiling Patriarch’s tricks!”
Lan Wangji gives that statement exactly as much consideration as it deserves. Before Su She has even finished speaking, Lan Wangji is calling, softly, “Wen Ning?"
Wen Ning cocks his head to the side, bird-like, considering the embarrassment in front of him for a moment. Then he turns his face to Lan Wangji, looking at him with his big, dark eyes.
He answers: “Woof.”
Lan Wangji flicks a glance briefly at the advancing gaggle of cultivators. He and Wen Ning really are well and truly surrounded now. Then he turns back to the scroll, and once again lowers his charcoal to paper.
“Sick ‘em, boy,” he says. He does not raise his head again until the screaming has stopped.

modern au where jin ling has a tiktok account and every video is of one of his uncle's houses and he's like "turns out the ghost hates [insert uncle name here] too" and then the rest of the video is wwx's ghost knocking over cups/banging on the wall/making water drip/writing taunts on steamed up mirrors/etc and whichever Uncle Guy it is suffering the consequences of being a Jin Ling Uncle Who Isn't WWX
jc gets the bangs/knocks RIGHT when he's abt to fall asleep. no amount of ignoring it or shouting "shut up!!!" stops it. he has to get up and pound on the wall and then wwx will think about shutting up. maybe. but probably not for another few rounds of this or until jc threatens to sleep outside or something
lxc wakes up every morning to find All of his shit is messed up, like his fancy tea cabinet is reorganized in the stupidest way possible (by color and the second letter of the brand name), his fancy coffee table magazines are open to ominous pages about hair cuts, his records are riffled thru and sometimes set in the trash if wwx really doesn't like it
jgy gets shower messages that say shit like "I Know What You Did :)" that makes him convinced someone is trying to Expose Him and so he sets up so many cameras expecting to see idk mxy or xy doing it but he never catches anything!! the cameras fuzz out and suddenly the message is there!! he's being played with!!! this can't stand!!!
nmj gets creaking hallways and sometimes he thinks he hears angry voices. at first he's like great there's my family's mentow illness kicking in early. but then lxc or someone also hears it and he's like great is there a creep hiding in my house?? but no it's just wwx's ghost who also sometimes rushes up behind him and clenches his hand on nmj's shoulder or tugs his hair and makes the angry voices go Very Loud
nhs gets really weird fucking dreams where wwx sits at the end of his bed and smiles at him a lot. if nhs looks too closely wwx starts to fade into the dark behind him, but if nhs just glances and acts like nothing weird is happening then wwx will sometimes laugh like nhs said something funny. (nhs tries to talk to him but wwx doesn't reply)
mxy will be like "if ur real help me pick which eyeshadow I should use" and then one of the options will fly off the table and he'll say "thanks weird ghost u have good taste" and wwx will send his magnifying mirror spinning bc hell yeah he does
lwj sometimes feels, very strongly, that he's being watched,, but usually he's alone or w someone who isn't looking at him nearly intense enough to explain how strong the feeling is. it doesn't feel malicious but it gets a bit unnerving; wwx can tell and starts to pet lwj like a startled bunny too to soothe him >:3

Lan Wangji having a bad day and just gathering Wei Wuxian into his arms and onto his lap.
Wei Wuxian makes himself comfortable on his favorite spot in the world as he proceeds to chatter about nothing and give Lan Wangji many kisses all over his face until the grip on Wei Wuxian’s hips loosens.
I like to imagine this particular position to be very comforting for them both. Wei Wuxian on Lan Wangji’s lap, holding each other close as they bask in love for each other and the feeling of genuine contentment and joy they find in each other’s company.
