The Best Thing I Ate Last Month May Edition.
When I started kicking around the idea of writing about the best things I eat each month, I was trying to figure out if I should limit it to restaurant food or everything I eat. I ultimately decided it should include everything I eat because, more times than not, some of the best foods I eat are homemade. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the foresight to take more pictures of some of the great things we had or take any notes with the thought of writing about them, so I’m mainly going from memory for this month.
We started off the month pretty strong with some grilled ribeye steaks, grilled asparagus, and sautéed mushrooms. Grilling asparagus is my favorite way to make it. It’s done simply by tossing it with olive oil and kosher salt and quickly hitting it on a hot grill. It doesn’t take more than two or three minutes, and it’s very flavorful. I know a lot of people cook their mushrooms on the grill, too, but I think it robs them of most of their flavor, so I always opt for sautéing them in a pan with butter and a sprinkle of olive oil.
On Mother’s Day, we went to a cookout at my daughter's house, and our son-in-law Trey grilled some fabulous cheeseburgers that I will be the first to admit I overindulged in. But the star of that show was Christine’s desserts. She made a fantastic peanut butter pie, and I could have eaten the whole thing. But her toasted coconut cheesecake was on a whole different level. It may have been the best cheesecake I’ve ever had. She is becoming a very good savory cook in her own right, but she has a real talent for pastry which I hope she tries to develop.
Fricker’s is our go-to spot most weeks for many reasons. In my humble opinion, they have really good food at very reasonable prices, and most of their staff are fantastic. I had their original bone-in wings with their Bourbon Molasses sauce that I’ve fallen in love with. I love the crispy breading on their wings, even though David Chang says breaded wings are entirely un-American. Go to hell, David Chang. I love them. For a side, I had the brew city fries. I don’t know what that seasoning is they put on them, but damn, it’s good.
I smoked some baby back ribs that turned out fantastic. Whenever I make ribs, they will always make their way high up on the list of best things I ate. Which causes this weird dynamic in which because they are good every time, they don’t stand out in my mind like they used to. I love and crave them, but after I eat them, they just don’t stand out to me as if I had something good for the first time. Even if I don’t enjoy that dish as much, it still tends to stand out more because it’s something new. So I wonder if even though I think my ribs are great, they will ever stand out enough to me for me to say they were the best thing I ate last month.
I had the steak fajitas from Dos Lunas Mexican Bar and Grill in Tipp City. They were delicious but perhaps not the most stand-out fajitas I’ve ever had. If there’s a bad fajitas spot, though, I haven’t found it yet. Can someone please explain to me why I only get three tortillas, though? I always run out and just finish with a fork. Come on now, just give us more tortillas!
I came across a recipe for Korean beef rice bowls that I wanted to try. I try to stick to a recipe the way it is written the first time I make it, then tweak it more to my personal tastes. That will be the case with this recipe. It was good, but I feel like it could be better with some work.
I think the stand out for breakfast this month was my egg, ham, and provolone cheese breakfast sandwiches, which are, by far, Cathy’s favorite breakfast. I also made some fried eggs served over spicy hash browns with sriracha mayonnaise that would have been outstanding had I not had an amateur moment and broken two of the three eggs on the flip.
Hands down, the best thing I ate last month was Christine Applegate’s Toasted Coconut Cheesecake. I’m not a huge cheesecake fan, so for me to be blown away by it says a lot about how good it really was. The toasted coconut cut the richness of the cheesecake perfectly. It truly was an amazing dessert.
I would love for you to drop me a line and tell me what was the favorite thing you ate last month. And again, as someone I greatly admire once said, “Cook Free, Or Die”

Character Intro: Nárkosi (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicknames- Calm Mother by the people of Olympius
Mama by her daughter
Age- 35 (immortal)
Location- Arcadia, Olympius
Personality- A minor deity in the pantheon, she's not ashamed of her position- being easygoing & carefree. She approaches all things in life with a calm and collected attitude while being very empathetic towards others. She's currently in an open relationship.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess. Being the goddess of sedation her other powers/abilities include invisibility (herself, objects, & other people), limited hypnosis, sedative inducement (can tranquilize any organism into a somnolent state), and extrasensory perception.
Nárkosi is the mother to Pasithea (goddess of hallucinations & relaxation). She had her daughter on her own by way of Gaia's fertility services. The two are as close as any mother/daughter- often times she'll call her daughter "my blood." Ever since Nárkosi moved out of the city, they mainly keep in touch through writing letters (since she doesn't believe in using modern technology). Pasithea will also stop by the commune where her mom now lives to stay over for a couple of weeks.
Before the drastic lifestyle change, she lived in a small cottage in the Hearthwood neighborhood of New Olympus. Nárkosi worked closely with her good friend Epione (goddess of soothing pain) as it related to anesthesiology & sedation. That was her main source of income. She couldn't explain the shift for the sudden need for change, but it eventually happened.
There's a pendant necklace of a larimar gemstone (from her daughter) that she always wears.
Nárkosi now lives (in a small cabin house) and is a part of Pan's naturalist commune located in Arcadia. Often nicknames "The Agrotases", the community is generally peaceful & laidback with the key principles being trust, community, and sharing. The commune is open to anyone of any creed, but the general population include satyrs, centaurs, mortals (especially lotus eaters), & dryads.
A go-to drink for her is hibiscus tea that she brews herself, often adding a bit of honey to it. Other go-to drinks for her include aloe vera juice, water, matcha tea, coconut water, homemade dragonfruit-lychee juice, ceylon black tea, chamomile tea, & pu'er tea. She also likes the chai milk bubble tea from Pan's juice shack.
A guilty pleasure that Nárkosi will never give up are the almond poppy seed muffins from Hollyhock's Bakery. She also enjoys the pot brownies made by Juniper, a dryad nymph that's part of the commune.
She loves snacking on goji berries! An often treat for her are toasted wheat bread slices spread with apricot preserves and cashew butter.
In the pantheon Nárkosi is also friends with Pathos (god of emotion), Karme (demi-goddess of the harvest), Mesembria (Bria) (goddess of the afternoon), Auge (goddess of first daylight), The Nesoi (sister island goddesses), Nymphe (goddess of self-care), Paean (goddess of physicians), Arktos (goddess of the night sky & constellations), Selene (Titaness of the moon), Eváeros (goddess of air & the zodiacs), Ioke (goddess of pursuit, tumult, & battle rout), Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture), Apheleia (goddess of simplicity), Elais (goddess of oil), Aegle (goddess of good health), Thilasmós (goddess of nursing), Ichnaea (goddess of tracking), Hesperis (goddess of the evening & sunset), Livádi (goddess of meadows), & Hesychia (goddess of quiet, stillness, rest, & silence). She greatly admires Gaia (goddess of the earth) and Tethys (Titaness of freshwater & clouds). Nárkosi was the mentor to Aergia (goddess of sloth, idleness, & laziness). She also likes her daughter's boyfriend Hypnos (god of sleep).
She's well practiced and versed in pressure point martial arts!
She's a frequent user of pot, lotus dust, shrooms "magic mushrooms", & lotus tiles.
Eváeros gifted her a Diamond Ave. blue butterfly shaped jeweled clutch.
Nárkosi (along with the other inhabitants of the commune) is vegan. She and a few of the ladies are sometimes responsible for the mass preparation & cooking of meals which is often served and eaten at the main hall. Some of her personal favorite dishes include vegetable pastitsio, one pot spaghetti (added with basil, sundried tomatoes, chopped walnuts, & bell peppers), one pot sticky rice (added with sliced cucumbers, shallots, & honey glazed tofu), balsamic kale salad with roasted red onions, butternut squash soup, and soft shell roasted cauliflower tacos.
She's a longtime lover of Pan (god of the wild, satyrs, shepherds, & rustic music). She doesn't mind that he has other lovers & is sure of the bond they share. Nárkosi is even friendly with a few of them (and the children they have with him). She in fact has a lover of her own- a mortal man named Arrian who lives a few houses down.
In her free time she enjoys surfing, bike riding, gardening, tai chi, aerial yoga, horseback riding, acupuncture, swimming, aromatherapy, reading, knitting, jewelry making, pottery, sewing, archery, football (soccer), & drawing.
"Tranquility is a choice. So is anxiety. The entire world all around may be in turmoil, but if we want to be peaceful within, we can."

What are your OCs favorite foods?
At the top of my head, Naomi loves pecha berry cheesecake. So, unsurprisingly, she also loves sweet Cheese-Covered curry. She also likes the spicy variant, mainly because the spiciness isn't too strong, and she can still taste the sweetness of the curry lol. And coconut milk curry, though she prefers the spicy variant over the sweet one.
Carol loves Bitter Plenty-of- Potatoes and Spicy Toast Curry! They never had Rich Curry before, but they really want to try it.
I know this is about favorite foods, but Naomi never wants to eat another instant ramen curry ever again ( *stares at the twins*).
The rest is gonna be hard since most of my ocs favorite foods would be something more culturally for them, so I'm just saying whatever comes to mind first
Elliot loves veggie burgers, especially the ones that her dad makes her. Those are the best. I think with her Chosen powers, she has a slightly higher spice resistance to, so the spicier the better.
As for Alexis, I can't really think of anything for him. Really, anything his dad cooks is amazing to him. Maybe oran berry pie? Though that's more of a treat to himself.
Amsonia has eaten a tamoto berry ( by accident) and didn't even flinch. Take that how you will.
That's all my brain can muster for now. I'll probably come back to this when I actually look things up. But thank you for the ask, regardless!

Nobody can deny the inconvenience and discomfort one has to go through while suffering from diarrhoea. It is a digestive disorder that can leave anyone feeling drained or out of sorts, characterised by water loose motion. While seeking medical attention for severe cases is crucial, there are times when mild bouts of diarrhoea can be effectively managed at home. We are unveiling five unique and easy-to-implement home remedies in this blog that can offer both relief and comfort. From the kitchen cabinet to soothing sips, let's dive into the world of natural remedies for taming tummy troubles. And for stomach pain and diarrhoea treatment, it is advisable to consult a specialist at the top internal medicine hospital in Mangalore.
Simple Brat Diet
Tumblr media
When the stomach is churning and digestion goes haywire, it's time to turn to the Brat diet. Comprising bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast, this diet helps to settle the stomach and provide much-needed nutrients without putting excess strain on the digestive system. Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps to balance electrolytes lost due to diarrhoea. Rice and toast offer bland, easily digestible carbohydrates that can help absorb excess fluid in the intestines. Meanwhile, applesauce provides a gentle source of fibre, aiding in regulating bowel movements. For loose motion remedies, try incorporating these foods in small, frequent portions to alleviate discomfort.
Ginger and Honey
Ginger and honey, a powerful pair known for their soothing properties, can work wonders in combating diarrhoea. Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea qualities, can help calm an upset stomach and reduce cramping. Honey, on the other hand, boasts antibacterial properties that can help combat the underlying causes of diarrhoea. Create a simple concoction by steeping freshly grated ginger in hot water, then adding a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. Sipping this warm elixir can provide much-needed relief while soothing your senses. For a general health checkup or consultation, kindly visit the internal medicine expert in Mangalore.

Mint and Lemon Water
Mint, with its refreshing aroma and natural antispasmodic properties in lemon, can be a great help in alleviating diarrhoea symptoms. It can help to relax the muscles in your gastrointestinal tract, reducing spasms and cramps. Prepare a cup of mint and lemon water by steeping a handful of fresh mint leaves in a jar and adding lemon slices with some water. For an added boost, a touch of coriander leaves can provide extra aroma and taste. Sip on this aromatic infusion to soothe your stomach and promote smoother digestion. Also, go through the blog 'The Power of Antioxidants' for more knowledge before you plan a proper diet.
Potent Probiotics
Probiotics are a group of good bacteria that work in the intestine to create and support a healthy gut. These are mainly live microorganisms that exist in certain foods. It helps to restore the balance of gut flora. Eating probiotic-rich foods, including soft cheese, yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, green olives, beet kvass etc. These foods can introduce beneficial bacteria to your gut, helping to counteract the harmful bacteria responsible for causing diarrhoea. Incorporating probiotics into your daily routine can promote a healthier digestive system and potentially reduce the frequency of future bouts.
Rehydrating Coconut Water
Dehydration is a common concern during diarrhoea, as the body loses significant amounts of fluids and electrolytes. Therefore, coconut water, a natural hydration helps to replenish lost electrolytes and quench your thirst. Packed with essential minerals like potassium, sodium, and magnesium, coconut water offers a tasty and effective way to combat dehydration. Additionally, its gentle composition makes it easier on the stomach compared to commercial sports drinks. Keep a bottle of coconut water handy and take small sips throughout the day to stay hydrated and aid in recovery.
Dealing with diarrhoea can be a discomforting experience, but armed with these five unique home remedies, you can alleviate symptoms and promote a speedier recovery. From the soothing embrace of ginger and honey to the rehydrating powers of coconut water, these remedies harness the goodness of natural ingredients to provide relief without harsh chemicals or side effects.
While these remedies can be effective for mild cases of diarrhoea, seeking medical attention for persistent or severe symptoms is crucial. FAQs on Home Remedies for Diarrhea
Q1: What are the Effective Home Remedies for Managing Diarrhoea?
Many home remedies might lessen the symptoms of diarrhoea and aid in recovery. These include drinking more water, following a recovery diet, avoiding particular foods, taking probiotics, and, if necessary, attempting over-the-counter drugs.
Q2: What should I Avoid Drinking during Diarrhoea?
It's important to avoid beverages that could further irritate the digestive tract, such as caffeinated drinks, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and hot drinks. These can exacerbate diarrhoea symptoms and hinder recovery.
Q3: What Recovery Diet should I follow during Diarrhoea?
A recovery diet for diarrhoea should consist of small, frequent meals. Foods rich in pectin (like fruits), those high in potassium (such as potatoes and sweet potatoes), electrolyte-rich options like miso soup and sports drinks, cooked soft vegetables, and adequate protein can be beneficial. Some people find a liquid diet for the first 24 hours, including broths and bland soups, helpful in settling the digestive system.
Q4: What is the BRAT Diet, and when should I consider following it?
The BRAT diet is usually a combination of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. It's a bland diet low in fibre and high in starch, often recommended for managing diarrhoea. While it can help produce more solid bowel movements, it's important to note that the BRAT diet lacks balanced nutrition. Only follow this diet for a short time, usually no longer than 2 days.

What diet do I follow? Ketogenic - Let’s dive in!
Yesterday I wrote about my workout plan, let’s talk about my diet. There are exceptions to this, especially if I spend my day out somedays, then I eat something else and don’t follow as such but otherwise as I work from home, this is mainly what I have. Before delving into my own experiences, let's take a moment to understand the basic principles of the ketogenic diet. The foundation of this low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan revolves around achieving a metabolic state known as ketosis. By significantly reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing the consumption of healthy fats, the body shifts its primary fuel source from glucose to ketones, which are produced by the liver. This metabolic adaptation unlocks a host of benefits, from improved mental clarity to increased fat burning.
A Typical Day on My Keto Journey:
Breakfast: My mornings typically start with a nutritious and satisfying meal. As I bid farewell to traditional cereal, maggi noodles, pasta or hakka noodles or bowls and toast, I have embraced a range of delicious options. A typical breakfast might consist of scrambled eggs cooked in coconut oil, topped with avocado slices and a sprinkle of feta cheese. To complement this protein-rich dish, I often include a handful of fresh spinach or other low-carb vegetables.
Lunch: For lunch, I focus on incorporating lean sources of protein, healthy fats, and plenty of leafy greens. A colorful salad drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with grilled chicken or salmon becomes a delightful midday feast. Alternatively, I might prepare a delectable omelet filled with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, served alongside a side of grilled asparagus.
Snacks: While snacking can be challenging on many diets, the keto lifestyle offers a myriad of options. I love snacking on a handful of mixed nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, or macadamias. These provide a satisfying crunch and are packed with healthy fats. Additionally, I keep a stash of keto-friendly snacks, such as kale chips, cheese crisps, or homemade fat bombs, which are a delightful treat when cravings strike.
Dinner: Dinner is an opportunity to explore a wide range of delicious keto-friendly recipes. I often opt for grilled or baked protein sources, such as chicken,  or fish, accompanied by a generous serving of non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, or zucchini. To add flavor and richness, I experiment with herbs, spices, and healthy fats like coconut oil, butter, or olive oil.
Benefits and Transformations:
Since adopting the everyday keto diet, my journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Here are some of the benefits I've experienced:
Improved Energy Levels: Unlike the highs and crashes associated with carb-heavy diets, the consistent energy provided by ketones has granted me sustained vitality throughout the day.
Mental Clarity and Focus: One of the most notable changes has been the heightened mental clarity and focus I experience while in ketosis. This has allowed me to be more productive and focused on my daily tasks.
Reduced Cravings: By cutting out refined sugars and processed carbs, my cravings for unhealthy snacks and desserts have diminished, leading to better food choices and improved overall health.

From Keto-Friendly to Delicious: The Benefits of Keto Sweet Bread
From Keto-Friendly to Delicious: The Benefits of Keto Sweet Bread is a valuable resource for anyone looking to reduce their sugar intake while still enjoying delicious treats. Low-carb, high-fat keto diets like the ketogenic diet have become popular due to their health benefits, which include weight loss, lower cholesterol levels, improved cognitive function, and an overall healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, the very thing people enjoy about desserts – their sweet taste – is often not compatible with a keto diet. Keto Sweet Bread offers a delicious solution – a carb-conscious and sugar-free dessert that still hits the spot. Keto Sweet Bread is made from almond flour, coconut sugar, and a variety of wholesome ingredients, like coconut oil, chia seeds, and psyllium husk. These ingredients create a delectably moist, fluffy, and flavorful bread that would fit perfectly into a keto-friendly lifestyle. With Keto Sweet Bread, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Keto sweet bread can be used as sandwiches, toast, or even incorporate with other dishes. Additionally, it is a source of magnesium, copper, zinc, and iron. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids which can help to lower cholesterol levels. Compared to regular wheat bread, keto sweet bread contains fewer carbohydrates. Therefore, it is a great option for those on a low-carbohydrate diet looking for a way to still enjoy bread.
Sweet Taste: Recipes That Enhance the Deliciousness of Keto Sweet Bread
Keto sweet bread has a unique sweet taste that can be further enhanced with simple recipes. Some recipes that work particularly well with keto sweet bread are French toast, overnight oats, and avocado toast. You can also add spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice for a delightful sweet flavor. To make French toast, conquer three eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and sweetener together and dip the sweet bread slices into the mixture. To make overnight oats, combine almond milk, sweetener, and chia seeds. Stir the oat mixture into the sweet slices and refrigerate for up to 8 hours before serving.
Quick and Easy Recipes: Enjoying Keto Sweet Bread without Having to Spend Lots of Time in the Kitchen
Not everyone has the time spent in the kitchen to make elaborate meals. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to enjoy keto sweet bread, there are lots of options. Toast the slices of bread with butter or olive oil for a delightful snack. If you are looking for something sweet, you can try French toast, avocado toast, or overnight oats. These can all be made in less than 30 minutes and they are tasty and nutritious.
Baking Made Simple: Learning the Basics of Keto Sweet Bread Baking
For those looking for a challenge, baking keto sweet bread is the perfect way to get started. The most important thing is to make sure that the ingredients are gluten-free. Also use almond flour and coconut flour for the best results. To make keto sweet bread, mix together almond flour, coconut flour, baking soda, sweetener, and eggs. Unique Ideas: Innovative Ways to Incorporate Keto Sweet Bread into Your Diet
Keto sweet bread is a unique bread that can be incorporated into your diet in many innovative ways. To make open-faced sandwiches, spread a layer of cream cheese onto the slices of bread and top with fresh fruits or vegetables. If you are looking for a sweet treat, you can make keto cinnamon rolls by rolling the dough into a log and sprinkling cinnamon and a sweetener over top. For dessert, you can make a tasty keto bread pudding by combining the slices of bread with eggs, coconut milk, and sweetener. Finally, you can also use keto sweet bread for baking cakes and muffins.
Conclusion
From Keto-Friendly to Delicious: The Benefits of Keto Sweet Bread has provided an expansive view of how following a keto lifestyle can still include some of life’s sweet pleasures. Keto Sweet Bread is a great option for anyone looking to explore the keto lifestyle without compromising on delicious food. Gas And Electric: How To Choose The Best Cooking Energy
Tumblr media
There are likewise numerous strange and remarkable wellness cases bordering the coconut in all its kinds. This is preferred (and excellent) for Chinese food preparation, in India it is utilized mainly in the North and West. It is excellent for frying and also once again has a high smoke point. It conveys the flavour of the peanuts themselves (excellent for cooking satay). It is a combined fat and also not thought about all that nutritionally fantastic. Interestingly it is claimed that in its polished state it does not produce the allergy to peanuts that some individuals have (not exactly sure I want to attempt this personally). This is basically a pillar in Chinese food yet is likewise used as a cooking oil in Southern India, especially Tamil Nadu where it is known as gingelly or til oil. It comes in both a raw form which is clear or light yellow; this has a light flavour and also is practically odorless. This has a really high smoke point and also appropriates for deep frying. While both of these on the internet shops use some crossover products, both show up to have a specific niche in either advanced, state of the art devices or average housewife gizmos, depending on where you shop. By going shopping online at both shops, you can conserve cash as opposed to buying at retail outlets. Lots of on the internet stores offer voucher discount rates for brand-new consumers. You can do a search for a voucher code for both of these on the internet shops and also get a discount of approximately 15 percent off of your total acquisition. In order to get the promo code, you will certainly need to register for the newsletter for these stores. You will certainly obtain notifications regarding the most recent sales as well as gadgets that the stores are using. While both on-line sellers offer discount rates on food preparation and also cooking products, the price cuts offered by Metro Kitchen area are more when contrasted to getting the same items in the shop. For instance, the very same clothed blade established that you discover at Metro Kitchen area will certainly be around 20 percent less expensive when you acquire on the internet than when you most likely to a significant merchant like Macys to buy the item. Both on the internet stores provide the same things for less than you will certainly pay in a store. Gas and also electric are the typically utilized ways of cooking. Though there are some areas where timber baked breads of pizzas are sold, a great deal of individuals prefer making use of either the gas or the electrical power for cooking. There are even infrared grills which quicken outside cooking and likewise various other applications developed for individual usage. All these cooking things have different power usage whereas there are some which can utilize both gas and also electric - in order to comprise your mind between both, you need to start by examining the prices for both you can quickly Corpus Christi electrical energy prices, or any type of various other area, online free of charge with the aid of contrast sites. For the most part, people who have gone through cooking training like utilizing gas rather than electric. This is because there is the capacity to control the heat up to a preferred degree. Numerous say that gas use is much better because not only can you readjust the warmth degree, but you can also time. Campfires is a loved as well as important exterior practice. Its constantly fun to tell stories while toasting marshmallows around a campfire; nonetheless, campfires can present some severe issues. Campfires is an enjoyed and also indispensable outdoor practice. Most campers have a campfire in the evening also if they do not intend on utilizing it for cooking functions. Its constantly fun to inform stories while roasting marshmallows around a campfire; however, campfires can pose some severe issues. If this is your only means to prepare, you just might go starving if it rains. On the various other hand, the majority of outside camping ovens work well in all kinds of weather condition. Campfire food preparation is a lot different than cooking on an exterior camping range or outdoor mobile grill. Campfire cooking is except the individual that is in a hurry to consume. It requires time to get the fire going and also develop some coals for warmth; however, it can be extra rewarding as a campfire can be serenading with is warmth, light, color, and is just loosening up.

Merch Review: Wang Bao Bao and OCAK Cereal Box Sets
Tumblr media
Hoho! GGDD keeping me super well-fed these days.
First up, XZ's OCAK breakfast box set, which I got mainly to try out more flavours. The previous box set that I got (review here) had the more typical, popular flavours. This set included seven snack-sized packs - cheese yogurt, cocoa mixed nuts, rose strawberry, peach, yogurt, matcha, and lightly salted fruit and veg.
I also got the WBB cereal box Set A, which included 4 full-sized cereal - the limited edition coconut pineapple flavour inspired by DD, dark chocolate hazelnut, peach oolong and Japanese curry. Merch includes an acrylic standee, postcard set, pin badge and stickers. I also got an extra packet of meat floss cereal to try cos I'm greedy and savoury cereal sounds yummy. Set B has totally different items except for the limited edition coconut pineapple flavour. In case anyone's wondering, the special surprise in the thumb drive from Set B is.....just a desktop wallpaper 😅 so I don't think I missed out much.
Tumblr media
Taste Test
I tried the OCAK matcha flavour and it was not too bad. Quite a good variety of ingredients in it - matcha flavoured rolled oats, rice crispies, cornflakes, red beans, coconut cubes, apple slices, strawberry yogurt cubes, jackfruit slices, cashew nuts, fig slices, and broad beans. The portion is pretty decent and while the individual packs are not so environmentally-friendly, it keeps you from overeating, compared to the big pack.
Tumblr media
From WBB, obviously I had to try DD's flavour first. It has coconut flavoured rolled oats, toasted coconut flakes, pineapple cubes, coconut milk cubes. I like it. The pineapple cubes add a little zing. Comparing both, OCAK is crunchier cos of the rice crispies but that's also how they're being marketed - crunchy cereal. I prefer WBB for now cos it's less sweet and the ingredients list looks cleaner. But if you're going for healthy diet, don't kid yourself. Just eat proper oats.
Tumblr media
Ending off with a quick unboxing video so you can take a look at the individual items.

ROBERT “BOBBY” MCKENZIE —
IG info/bio : @/returnofdamckenzie | 426k followers | @/mclitgs2 is my forever boo🤟🏽😍 while @/cardib is my WIFE! She just doesn’t know it yet ❤️ support my work & be part of my family: @/bobbymckcares
24 (25) years young
Born in Dundee, raised in Glasgow, Scotland
Jamaican father named Badrick who is a African studies professor
Caucasian/Scottish mother named Catriona who used to be a au pair but now works as a receptionist in senior living — one eye is honey hazel and the other a dark brown
It was difficult growing up in a school that didn’t accept Bobby being biracial, it resulted in bullying to the point where he needed to switch schools (A lawsuit was also in place) The next school was slightly better but Bobby slowly learned to accept himself as it was not something he could control and not something he would want to in the first place. He was proud of where he came from and never thought he was better or less than anyone else, that wasn’t how he was raised
He’s an only child, his parents thought about adopting (and fostering) but with Bobby they had their hands full and he was just enough for them
His family is very family-oriented so he would never have to feel lonely since they gave him a lot of attention, slightly making him spoiled but he was also around his cousins & spending time with them as well
He’s extremely close to his younger cousin (only by a few months) Femi who he views as his sister. They’ve been through a lot together and are always there for each other so it only makes sense
Most likely an active kid always up to some sort of shenanigans whether it’s by himself or with his group of friends, “why would you do that Bobby?” “Don’t ask why but ask, why not!?”
Definitely suffered some broken bones, concussions, & sprain injuries but would never show signs of pain...guys got a high pain tolerance that’s for sure
Fan of films/series “stand by me” & “the goonies” & “scooby doo” since he feels they relate to his life??
Hospital caterer and loves making those feel better with food that he’s created. If he can’t put a smile on patients face with words then he feels like he can show them with food
Food is an art to him. He went to school for culinary & it’s very important for him to show how much it is to him. He picked up the craft from of course his family, who always used food for numerous of things: to bring people together is one of them
Perfected Jerk haggis, it is now he favorite dish next to desert & breakfast!
I’m struggling to figure out what sign he maybe? He’s very playful which may come off as childish at times, which makes me think of Leo? (Maybe Gemini?) Only because they usually hold onto their childhood as best as they can, very generous, & give their energy to you but I also don’t see him being a fire sign at all? So maybe very little Leo in his chart. I also feel like he might be a bit of an empath? He knows when situations around him don’t feel right, knows how to read the room, and always wants to help others by lighting things up.
Idk but I’m feeling he’s libra sun + Gemini moon + Leo rising? Who knows
Probably lived in a 2 bed flat with his old uni mate. It was small and a bit shit but it was their shit and they made the best of it
Now lives in a stone cottage or farmhouse with MC that was built in the 1900’s & is slightly haunted. He’s decided to call them Duncan??? But he believes they’re a good spirit, maybe even a friendly ghost!? since he got comfortable with the bizarre happenings in the new flat & it doesn’t seem like they want to hurt them
Lottie offered to bring her ouija board next time she visited—Bobby declined
House is mostly neutral based but three of the rooms in the flat are covered in ridiculous patterned walls or furniture much to MC’s distaste but, “what’s yours is mine” right? No. But Gary approves!
Has two dogs: a terrier & a collie since MC wasn’t down for getting a sheep
They do have chickens to raise their own eggs tho!
Definitely the kind of significant other that will ride on the cart when they’re out grocery shopping, will make you breakfast in bed, & will send you memes while he’s at home and you’re out or even when he’s at work and you’re at home, let’s you put his arm to sleep when you’re laying on it in bed (big ass head gang!), definitely chooses the candles from bath & body works that smell like food items (majority of them suck let’s be honest)
Probably smells like cucumber, melons, lemons, and eucalyptus
Has your wedding date in his IG bio & is proud
Annoys Gary & Lottie with his food pics, “oh, Not this shit again! 😡 looks brilliant, but enough!”
Has zoom/FaceTime movie nights with Marisol & MC who stopped feeling like she was third-wheeling months ago
Talks to hope & Noah (in the background) as much as he can. Feels like they’re his inspiration for love, even tho he’s the only one married out of the villa
He values marriage just like his parents do and often has Sunday dinners with them & MC ofc
Probably has relationship guide books and only reads them out of boredom but finds fascinating facts/advice if he pays attention & tries to apply it to his relationship with mc. If it works, it works! & If it doesn’t, you can’t say he didn’t try!
Works long hours but will still come home to cook for MC or brings leftovers from the events he’s catered (most are for the hospital but occasionally he’ll do other events)
Has a separate IG for his work
When WAP dropped, he almost lost his shit. Even tried to get MC to do the challenge with him, he’s pretty bad but MC eventually learned it just for him 😜
Is thrilled that Cardi made the best decision EVER on divorcing offset, “are you thinking of leaving me now?” “... I might.” “BOBBY!” “Haha, I love you!
Absolutely loves Christmas!!! It’s his favorite holiday and he loves giving back to everyone in his life. Usually he’s working overtime for the holidays & it makes him emotional due to the stories he hears & he puts a little extra love in his food
Goes all out for Christmas. Tries to buy/make everyone something. Even if he doesn’t really care for them...he’ll at least send them a x-mas card, if they keep it or burn it it’s entirely up to them—if he knew about it he’d probably be a little sad not gonna lie...he’s a soft king
Once bought Lottie black crocs with spooky pins , “are you joking Bobby?!” He knows she secretly loved them
Uses salt and peppermint in his dark hot cocoa...
Rather make deserts for Christmas than the food, he feels like it’s his duty
King of giving the thumbs up, especially when situations have gone to shit. He’ll still shoot them up with a smile or a grimace
Always inviting someone somewhere. “Bobby, hun. You’re 4-6 hrs away and it’s 1 am.” Hope groaned after listening to his bright idea, thinking something bad happened. “Ah, you could still make it if you tried, lassie.” “I’m gonna hang up now. Good night, bonkers man.”
Needs constant reminding when to get his locs touched up & moisturized
Either has a trampoline or a funhouse jumper in his backyard (maybe both) “we’ve got the space and this is better than a pool, or almost!”
Wants children, a whole footie team! There’s no specific time frame for him, when it happens, it happens
Used to cool & wet temps & loves vacationing in Greenland. Sure the hot weather he experienced in the villa was awesome & something different than what he’s used to but you can’t take the scot out of the man. So he typically sticks to places that are similar in temps, that way he doesn’t have to change his clothing choices much
Loves a good bath. Bubble baths are better than bath bombs to him, PERIOD!
Loves bubbles so much he put too much laundry detergent in the wash (does this on purpose now) and came back home to the dogs and room covered in it. Do you think he cleaned it up before MC came home? No. He decided to have a bubble party in the room with a Caribbean playlist playing in the background
MC definitely posted about it the first time & joined him for a bit, dreading the work that came with cleaning it all up. Now whenever Bobby needs a bubble party, he knows what to do. MC preferred him to have his little bubble party in the tub but 50% of the time he chooses not to listen & they leave him to pout & clean it himself
Likes to hold hands with fingers interlocked. When it’s cold and if you’re both wearing hoodies, he’ll slide his hand inside the arm of your hoodie to help keep you warm
Canon: His version of a snack is spaghetti hoops on toast & can eat that for the rest of his life & be content
If he didn’t end up marrying MC, probably finds his significant other working as a nurse at one of the hospitals he caters to or a volunteer at a old folks home
Never had a serious relationship, very few hookups, was either always placed in the friend zone or there was one person he wanted to be serious with but they rejected him and continued loving someone else who treated them like shit—so he kinda swore off of relationships and just flirted a bunch and kept his love life non-existent
Fav ice cream? Rocky road ice cream with one scoop of cotton candy & one scoop of cookie butter blue
Doesn’t believe in measuring when it comes to culinary. He uses his eyes as his measurement, could be a bad thing, could be a good thing, that’s up to you
If he’s up at night, he’s eating something sweet. A nice glass of single malt scotch whiskey + a splash of coconut milk (🤢) with a slice of angel food cake & he’s out like a light
Absolutely loves shopping for the kitchen, finds immense joy in doing so. If you lose him in a store, one of the places you’ll most likely find him is in the kitchen decor area
Owns a bagpipe & wants to get better at it, even tho he scared the living shit out of his dogs & chickens
Wears his shades quite a bit even tho the weather is hardly sunny and mainly windy & damp
Will hold the door for strangers even if they don’t say thank you
He’s open when it comes to music. Will listen to anything but feels like the music has to be a purpose for something...Everything he does in his day to day life has to feel like a soundtrack to him since in his mind he’s daydreaming about his life being made into a movie. Who isn’t?
He thinks wentworth Miller should play him in a film and that kid from blackish should play him when he was a wee lad, Marcus Scribner
Always keeps a positive attitude because he knows what it feels like to feel low and he doesn’t want anybody else in the world to feel like that so he wants to uplift and if he can try to be someone’s happiness he’ll gladly be that— which isn’t always the right move, he learned
Listens to: Rotimi, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Skip Marley, H.E.R., Jhene Aiko, Jorja Smith, UMI, The Kooks, The Killers, Cold War kids, Milky chance, Blood Orange, The 1975, Vampire Weekend, Bad Suns, BRYSON TILLER, Kilo Kish, & Ella Eyre (although he misses her old music)
Celeb crushes? Cardi B is his mfkin celeb wife okay?! Nobody else comes above her! He also thinks FKA twigs is pretty & super talented, sevdaliza!, Tia & Tamera, Iman, and brandy from the 90s makes him swoon
Anthem = jaden, “Boys and Girls”

New lifestyle!
After a lot of research and analysis, trying to find something I liked and put it in my life, and not just for a week, I opted for the Mediterranea diet. from Spain and France is associated with cardiovascular health and longevity. Research around the world also links it to the prevention of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, lowering bad cholesterol, lower incidence of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and some types of cancer such as bowel and breast cancer. Fresh and natural food such as fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil, oilseeds, grains and cereals is on the table of the inhabitants of this region. Milk and cheese are consumed sparingly, and wine is also present during meals. Red meat is rarely consumed. Sausages, canned goods and ultra-processed foods are out of the diet. In addition, they also walk a lot, do physical activity, many have the habit of taking a siesta or riding a bicycle. Thus, it is not difficult to conclude that this set of habits results in a less sedentary and stressful life. The goal is not weight loss. Choosing this dietary pattern will bring benefits to me and your health, however, eating large amounts of these foods (even those recommended in the diet) and spending fewer calories can result in extra pounds.
Tumblr media
For seven days I applied this diet in my house.
Breakfast:
Fresh herbal tea, a fruit and a Mediterranean sandwich (two slices of wholegrain bread; small piece of goat cheese; olive oil; cherry tomatoes and chopped cucumber; sea salt beaten with oregano, thyme and basil).
Morning snack:
A fruit with grated natural coconut.
Lunch:
Salad with different types of green leaves and sunflower seeds. Fish baked with herbs and spices (thyme, nutmeg, rosemary and oregano) and seasoned with olive oil. Brown rice cooked with lentils, mushrooms, oregano and carrots. A serving of sour fruit such as plum, pineapple, orange, tangerine or kiwi fruit.
Snack:
Natural low-fat yogurt with red berries, oat bran and a hint of honey. Accompanying mineral water.
To have lunch :
Vegetables soup. A slice of wholegrain bread to go with it.Tea
 Allergens
* In snacks, it is suggested that you consume peanuts, but as I am allergic, I made an adjustment and used grated natural coconut as a source of natural fat.
Tumblr media
Recipe:
 Mediterranean Sandwich:
2 slices of wholegrain bread
1 tablespoon of oil
2 slices of goat cheese
5 cherry tomatoes
4 cucumber slices
sea salt to taste
Preparation: lightly toast the two slices of bread. Add flavored oil and goat cheese. Top with cherry tomatoes and cucumber, season with sea salt and serve.
 After 7 days,
of Mediterranean diet and regular physical activity I can say that my husband and I adopted this diet. In addition to feeling better, more willing, we also noticed an improvement in sleep quality and an improvement in bowel function. The diet suggests that the person consumes red wine, and we start to have this habit on weekends.
 Advise
The Mediterranean diet is simple and can be easily found in restaurants, the important thing is to offer protein options, different from red meat, such as fish, but mainly opt for fresh and natural products, without using canned products.

Just made a few aesthetics/moodboards whatever they're called for Coby, my version of Jacob, and my MCs amortentia. I put them all in the order from oldest to youngest for each game.
Hogwarts Mystery
Coby McQuaid
Log Cabin | Honey | Smoke | Kiwi Cream Cheese Toast
The kiwi cream cheese toast is something Coby loves to eat for breakfast. Every morning he'll make some for himself. The log cabin scent is the home he now lives in. After being freed from the portrait and hunting down R, he finally settles down and moved in to a cabin of his own. The smoke scent comes from sparklers he used to light up when he was younger. He has a fond memory of him with a little Veruca and Carson where he lit up some sparklers and watched them run around with them. The honey scent is from when he adds honey to his kiwi toast, his tea or sometimes uses it for his skin's appearance. He believes the honey can help stop wrinkles from forming and make him look young.
Tumblr media
Carson Ivey
Violin Wood/Music Sheets | Blueberry Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins | Paint | Hot Chocolate
As a child, Carson took violin lessons. He takes pride in his violin skills and would sometimes play it in the Ravenclaw dorm. The muffins are snacks his mother would always make for breakfast. Every time Carson feels homesick, he'll write to his mom and she'll send him a basket of muffins for him. Carson loves hot chocolate, especially when it's his mother's special recipe. He prefers hot chocolate over coffee and tea. While paint is one of the scents you can smell for his amortentia, it's not because he's great at art, it's because it's used for some of his pranks. Paint and glitter are a common element to his pranks, especially on Talbott and Chester.
Tumblr media
Veruca McQuaid
Ginger Lemon Tea | Autumn Leaves | Mixed Berries | Carnation Flowers
Veruca has a cup of ginger lemon tea a day. She actually started drinking it at the start of 5th year after telling Rowan she never really cared to try tea. After drinking it for a couple of days, she started drinking it every day after that. Autumn is Veruca's favorite season, she loves to walk through a pathway of trees as the leaves fall around her. Mixed berries are Veruca's favorite fruits, she loves pastries and other treats with mixed berries as the filling (i.e. mixed berry tarts, mixed berry parfaits, and mixed berry trifles). Veruca's favorite flowers are carnations, and when Diego spent an entire week trying to give her the right flower until the end, her love for them grew even more.
Tumblr media
Magic Awakened
Marisol Caplan
Marigolds | Books/Book Pages | Cinnamon | Oranges
While she's sometimes represented by sun flowers, marigolds are part of Marisol's amortentia. They are also the flowers of her birth month, October. Marisol is always seen with a book or somewhere that has books. She loves to read, she has her own mini library in her room of the Caplan Residence. The scent of cinnamon is from the cinnamon scented candles and the cinnamon sticks she uses to stir her tea. Sometimes she uses them for her baths as the cinnamon can remove toxins from the body and act as a natural disinfectant that can cleanse the body. It can also help invigorate the person's spirit and elevate their mood. Oranges are fruit she often loves to eat.
Tumblr media
Calum Karasu-Ivey
Cello Wood & Music Sheets | Snuggle Fabric Softener | Baked Ziti | Pine/Pinecones
Like his father, Calum started taking music lessons at a young age and learned how to play the cello. He's quite fond of the instrument and would practice every now and then. The fabric softener is always used for his clothes and bed sheets. He refused to uses any other kind except Snuggle. The pine scent in his amortentia started when Raylene gave him a pinecone when she was still a toddler. Calum won't admit to it, but he still has that pinecone in a small box in his room. And the baked ziti is obviously a dish he loves to eat.
Tumblr media
Carina Caplan
Violets | Chocolate Chip Banana Bread | Ocean Breeze | Vanilla Beans
Similar to her older sister where she's often represented by sun flowers from both their parents, Carina's first scent in her amortentia are violets. The flower of her birth month, February. Chocolate chip banana bread is her favorite snack. She's not particularly picky on how it's made but she does often point out how it's not as good as the one her father makes. Now although she loves going out to the beach, the ocean breeze scent in her amortentia is actually the shampoo she uses. And the vanilla bean scent is her lotion.
Tumblr media
Isa Skyes
Coconut Oil | The Beach | Smoke and Fire | Freshly Cut Grass
As an islander, Isa spends a lot of time at the beach, it makes one of the scents in her amortentia. She's also a pretty active girl, and is outside everyday. Having so many siblings she's often rolling around in the grass with a few of them. The smoke and fire is from all the barbecues Isa had for parties. She often helps with the barbecue rather than decorating. The coconut oil scent is from when she uses the oil to moisturize her skin.
Tumblr media
Raylene Karasu-Ivey
Donuts | Wood Shavings | Mint | Balloon Flowers
Raylene's favorite snack are donuts. She would always be seen munching on one while she's crafting some new toy or invention. The wood shavings are from when she's crafting a new toy or invention. The mint scent in her amortentia are the mint essential oil she uses while crafting to try and drown out the wood shavings. It's also from the mint baths she takes whenever she wants an invigorating and stress free soak. The balloon flower scent is from the balloon flowers she got for her birthday. Her father used to make a flower crown out of them for her on her birthday.
Tumblr media
Caden Saunders
Dirt | Dove Mandarin & Tiare Flower Body Wash | Rain | Warheads
Caden loves to play outside during rainy days, so rain is one of the scents in his amortentia. Dirt also comes to play as he loves to spend most of his time outside and play in the dirt. He's a very active and rough boy. The Dove body wash is another scent. Since he has two moms, most of the hygiene products he uses are feminine. He doesn't mind of course, he actually loves the smell of the body wash he uses so his moms would always send him a bottle or two while he's at Hogwarts. And the warheads are his favorite candies, his favorite are the blue ones.
Tumblr media
Hogwarts Legacy
Avis Ni Conraoi
Ink and Parchment Paper | Lavender | Lily of the Valley | Forests
The ink and parchment paper scent in Avis' amortentia comes from all the poetry she writes, as well as the music sheets for her flute and harp. The lily scent is from her favorite flowers, lily of the valley. It's also the flower of her birth month. Avis is more in touch with nature as she finds it to be more magical than the magic around her in Hogwarts, the scent of forests comes from this. The lavender is from the essential oil she used to help her relax. She mainly uses this when she's playing one of her instruments or writing poetry.

Why do I cook?
Tumblr media
I love cooking because it satisfies the following curiosities of mine:
The intellectual pursuit of science, history and art through a recipe and the act of cooking,
The basic need to nurture the soul and feed hungry bellies, mine and my husband’s, and;
The connection to my past and my family.
Since the pandemic began, I have been cooking food I miss from my home country, Malaysia. The desire for connection to family and friends from my past has weighed on me heavily as sheltering at home for the sake of public health safety takes its toll. At the same time, anti-Asian violence began to escalate mainly driven by racist narratives and further perpetuated by systemic racism. I don’t need to explain this part, there are plenty of resources on Google about anti-Asian violence and the history of racism if you need it.
When I heard about the news about an elderly Thai man being fatally assaulted in San Francisco, my heart sank and I started to cry. As I read the news, I said to myself, “he’s close to my father’s age and he looks like my dad if he were still alive and lived a better quality of life.” My father passed away during the pandemic in May 2020 (I wrote about this experience in my 31 Stories in 31 Days series for AAPI Heritage Month in May 2020, you can read the full recollection here). All the feelings of grief and loss came rushing back to me as I sobbed over the loss of this man’s life.
In the last few weeks, the mass shooting of Asian women in Atlanta broke my heart. The women’s ages were my mother and sister’s age as well as my good friends I grew up with. I was at a loss for words with so many thoughts in my head — struggling with my own experiences as a Chinese Malaysian woman and managing my anger over these continued acts of anti-Asian violence and racism. I cried and sobbed throughout my work days navigating feelings I pushed down so that I could be productive.
The media cycle reported heavily on this mass shooting. Spurs of dialogue on social media around not only anti-Asian violence but that the shooter had “a bad day” and his motives were not racially driven became a source of pain for many including myself. Defining what was a racially motivated hate crime and what wasn’t, it felt like being gaslighted. Not only this one time, but every time before — in this country’s history and even in my own lived experience.
I had been researching and reading about gaslighting for a while because I wanted to understand my own response to personal trauma. I came across a short TikTok video created by @risethriverepeat from a Facebook friend that highlighted a kernel of truth I had never known. The individual in the video said, “Overexplaining can be a trauma-based response to being gaslit in childhood. When I figured that out, I worked to stop doing so. If I already told the truth and was clear, there’s nothing else to say… then overexplaining leads to distortion.” A light bulb moment occurred to me and everything started to fall into place about how I became wired the way I am, especially hazy moments where I had to tell myself a different story so that I could make sense of what was happening to me. I spent a lot of time overexplaining in my lifetime. I can’t even remember when it started but there were some formative memories of having to accept something that wasn’t true.
When I was about 10 years old, I was part of a group of students who competed in a inter-school choral speaking competition (I wrote about this experience in my 31 Stories in 31 Days series for AAPI Heritage Month in May 2020, you can read the full recollection here). The short version of this story is we found the judges scoring sheets by accident. Our school should have won first place by default because we scored the highest points out of all the schools. Yet we were second. When our teachers and parents confronted the organizers, the teachers were taken away from the parents and students to talk about this. When the teachers returned to explain, they looked disappointed and said to both the parents and students that we lost and the decision was final.
The key thing here is the queen’s granddaughter was in the group that won. Basically the implication was that the results were fixed in her favor. This was a form of gaslighting at a systemic and cultural level. When I reflect back on various times where I second guessed myself, I realized many of those moments were gaslit moments where someone told me I “imagined it” or “you’re telling lies” or even worse “it didn’t happen”.
In this particular story about the choral competition, I am glad I had some resolve where my mom told me what happened. It was the only way I could process it but it also formed new behaviors in me to always rewrite narratives in my head to make myself okay with it and also overcompensate for areas where I felt no one would believe me, even when I was telling the truth. I had many more formative moments in my youth, even through adulthood, where I had to comply with believing something that wasn’t true for fear of retaliation and isolation; it was survival for me.
With this memory and the recent mass shooting, all the feelings of grief and loss from last year came rushing back once again with the pain of not being believed. Truly, what I needed to do in this moment was to process, grieve and heal so that I could re-align my internal compass with the recognition of what I believe to be true.
I read stories from other Asian women, talked to my mother, posted resources from Asians as well as Asian organizations in America, and spent time processing in spurts with others who would listen. Each of these actions helped me slowly embrace healing. The one part about healing I never enjoyed personally was remembering who and what we had lost. I felt like I didn’t have the capacity to hold it or that I didn’t have the courage to keep moving forward to not live in fear.
Keeping a memory alive of a loved one or of a moment time is how we make peace with ourselves, fill the cracks of our broken heart, and mending it back together so that our heart may beat again. So that we can be strengthened by our ancestors — our joy and love from rich cultural traditions passed from one generation to another. It’s inherent to our identity and how we continue to live authentically as we are. At least from what I have been told.
So why do I cook?
Cooking recipes that remind me of my dad, family, friends and moments in time of joy and love, helps me find peace and healing through action. It helps me bridge a lost connection; it fills my soul and mends my broken heart.

Last weekend, I made butter kaya toast. It is popular in Malaysia and one of the many local favorite childhood breakfast or treat. Kaya is a unique jam or spread made from pandan leaves, coconut milk, eggs and sugar. Combined and cooked down gently to a thick spreadable jam. Some have translated this in English as coconut jam or something decadent like coconut caramel. These translations don’t do justice for this unique spread. The forward flavor isn’t coconut, but rather the pandan essence. When combined with coconut milk, it becomes a rich unique flavor. Interesting fact, when you translate the word “kaya” from Malay to English directly, it means “rich”.
My mom and dad used to take me to these open-air coffee shops near where we lived in Sri Petaling and OUG (Overseas Union Garden) for breakfast or brunch. Since my palate at the time was a little picky, they would order this Hainanese breakfast meal for me comprised of kaya on two thin slices of toasted white bread with slivers of cold butter in between, two soft boiled eggs with soy sauce and white pepper to season, and a hot cup of Milo. Sometimes the alternate to kaya was just white sugar, which was also equally delicious but not in the same way how kaya satisfied my sweet tooth as a child.
Sometimes my dad or my mom would tell me stories about their childhood through food. Where they were when they first had it, who they shared kaya with or even where the best kaya they ever tasted came from. This often inspired my dad to buy little cylindrical plastic containers of kaya from local vendors on his way home from work. I remember his face lit up when he would tell everyone at home that he had bought kaya. When he made kaya toast for himself at home, he would always ask me if I wanted one. Whether I wanted one or not, he always made an extra one that he ate or shared.
This childhood memory became much more vivid with every bite of the kaya toast I made recently. It helped me feel closer to my dad even though I know he is no longer here on earth and that he is in Heaven. The act of eating and remembering gave me space to nourish not only my stomach, but also my soul and to feel whole again. I will continue to cook and relish memories of the past. The feelings of warmth, love and joy will always stay with me and be my source of healing whenever I need it.
I will always remember and keep working on myself.
