Enemies to lovers isn't something I've written before, so hopefully this does your request justice.

Although I love writing Suigetsu. He's such a snarky little shit. <3

Word Count: 1.9k Warnings for this fic: Canon-typical violence, suggestive/mild language.

Sweetheart

You were the newest member of Team 7 after Sai had been laid up in the hospital with some injuries. You yourself had just finished recovering after nursing a broken arm for two months. Since the circumstances lined up so well, Tsunade made a few quick adjustments, and suddenly you had a new team.

You had been sent out with Sakura, Naruto, and Yamato to investigate some strange occurrences happening in a little village near the border with the Land of Water. You had arrived after a day and a half, but so far hadn’t found anything out of the ordinary. You set up camp for the night just outside the village, and had volunteered to take the first watch to show you were a good sport.

After the other three had fallen asleep, you sat in silence for several minutes. You let the sounds of the night wash over you. An owl hooted overhead. The wind rustled the leaves in the trees surrounding you. Tiny chirps from insects chorused from somewhere nearby.

You settled back, checking the sleeping faces of your teammates, glad for the silence that let them rest.

Then you paused. Silence. The insects had stopped chirping.

You had your kunai out before you heard the rustle of grass behind you. You immediately turned and let your kunai fly toward the figure stepping into the clearing.

Your aim was perfect, as usual. But it didn’t matter - the blade passed right through him and embedded in the tree behind him.

“Easy now,” the stranger said. “You could hurt somebody like that.”

His appearance was unusual, at least for the Land of Fire. He had hair the color of freshly-fallen snow and eyes the color of crocuses. His teeth were sharpened, as if they belonged to a shark and not a man. A massive sword hung from his back, its blade larger than the man who wielded it. And around his body, he wore a black cloak with red clouds.

You were on your feet in an instant, your sword drawn as you shouted for your team to wake up. You raced towards him, ready to take him down whatever the cost.

He easily sidestepped your blade with a smirk. Then, in one swift motion, he drew his own sword and brought it down towards you. You brought your blade up to meet it, eyes bulging as the sheer weight from his sword bore down.

“Ah, one of you knows how to dance,” he said. “Good. That always makes things more fun.”

Sparks flew as your swords ground together. You put as much strength as you could into pushing back. His blade lifted just an inch, and you took the opportunity to twist away.

The rest of the team descended upon the battle. Naruto made an attempt at the Rasengan, but the stranger darted out of the way long before the ball of lightning made contact. Sakura attempted to punch him with chakra-laden fists, but he turned his upper body into water, negating any damage she could do. You tried again with your sword, hoping to at least distract him, but he was more than ready to block your attack as well as Naruto’s new attempt.

Then Yamato brought his hands together and summoned roots from the ground. They surrounded the stranger, binding him like ropes and pulling him to the ground. He smirked at Yamato. “You really think a plant is strong enough to hold me?”

“Who the hell are you?” you hissed.

“Aww, you don’t recognize this beautiful face?” he teased.

You snorted. “Beautiful isn’t the word I’d use.”

He sighed. “You wound me, sweetheart.” He then bowed his head exactly one inch. “Suigetsu Hozuki, at your service.”

Yamato folded his arms. “Why are you offering that information so freely?”

“To show that I’m a decent guy,” Suigetsu replied, though his eyes remained on you.

“Decent, and yet you wear those robes,” you said, eyeing the red cloud with distaste.

“Hey, that was not my call,” Suigetsu replied. “I was only following orders.”

“Whose orders?” Sakura asked.

“Someone you ought to know very well, since you’re from the Leaf,” Suigetsu replied. “Sasuke Uchiha.”

The atmosphere in the clearing changed instantly. Sakura went pale and her jaw went slack. Yamato had to restrain Naruto with one hand as he began demanding information about Sasuke from Suigetsu. You just watched everything unfold, stunned that an associate of the traitor Uchiha was there and speaking so freely.

“So why are you here then?” you asked.

“Well, sweetheart, I must admit, I’ve grown very tired of Sasuke’s ‘leadership’.” He shrugged. “Is he powerful? Yes. Is he a complete asshole who’s nearly gotten all of us killed? Also yes.”

Yamato frowned. “And you expect us to believe you’d talk to us so freely?”

“Believe me or don’t, I don’t really care,” Suigetsu replied.

“What do you want then?” Sakura asked, finally regaining her voice.

“And where is Sasuke?” Naruto demanded.

Suigetsu grinned. “You must be Naruto,” he said. “Sasuke always says you were the loud, annoying one.”

Naruto growled at him. “Why you-”

“We asked you a question,” you interjected. “What do you want?”

He turned to you. “Well, as a matter of fact, I was hoping to make a deal.”

“What kind of deal?”

“You see, they’re not gonna be too happy once they realize I’ve taken off,” Suigetsu explained. “And they’ve got one hell of a sensory type with them, so they’re probably going to be after me before long. So what I’d like is protection, and in exchange, I tell you all about what your little Sasuke’s been up to.”

You purse your lips. There’s no way in hell that anyone would take that deal.

“Fine,” Yamato said.

Your head snapped toward him. “You can’t be serious, captain.”

“Can and am,” Yamato said. “You, take him straight back to the village for interrogation. The rest of us will remain here to uncover the cause of all the disturbances and complete the mission.”

“Oh, that was me,” Suigetsu said.

“…That was you?” Yamato asked.

“Yep,” Suigetsu said. “How else was I supposed to get you to come this way?”

Yamato groaned. “Fine, we’ll all go. I’ll confer with Lady Tsunade when we get back about the mission.”

You were put in charge of guarding Suigetsu while the other three cleaned up the camp. You picked up his sword from the ground, then staggering under its immense weight.

Suigetsu openly laughed at your efforts. “Careful there, sweetheart,” he said. “My Executioner’s Blade can’t be wielded by just anybody.”

“As in the Executioner’s Blade, one of the Seven Ninja Swords of the Mist?”

“And she’s smart too! Very good.”

You glared at him, your arms folded. “How do you have it? Last I checked, you weren’t a member of the Swordsmen.”

Suigetsu shrugged. “Just collecting what was rightfully supposed to be mine.”

“All right, let’s move out,” Yamato said. “Can you handle the sword?”

“I’ll manage,” you said.

“Mmm, maybe for a few minutes,” Suigetsu said. “But the only person here strong enough to carry my Executioner’s Blade is me.”

“We’ll see about that,” you said.

Yamato undid the bindings at Suigetsu’s legs, allowing him to walk. You took the holster from Suigetsu, ignoring the suggestive remark he made about you wanting to be closer to him, then swung it over your shoulders.

As the heavy sword slid into place, your legs buckled. You tried to keep your face calm and still, but Suigetsu was already laughing. “You just let me know when you get tired. I’ll gladly carry it for you.”

“Not in a million years, Hozuki,” you said.

Your group finally sets out towards Konoha. Every step you took took three times the usual effort, and you were sweating before you’d even gone a single kilometer.

On top of that, Suigetsu was easily the most annoying enemy you’d ever faced.

He never stopped talking, but he chose the most inane topics. The weather. The manufacturing of swords and sword dances. How much wood it must have taken to build their village. And you. He was constantly needling you, asking you about your daily life while also feigning concern about your struggles with the heavy sword.

But you were determined to prove him wrong, even if you had to drag the sword all the way there.

You were still relieved when the gates came into sight.

Your legs wobbled as you entered the village, but you managed to stop them as you gave a strained smirk to Suigetsu. “Told you I could do it.”

“All right, when I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong. Good job, sweetheart.” He chuckled. “Though I must say, it was a lot of fun watching you sweat. I’ll have to find ways of doing it again.”

The implication in his words made your cheeks pinker than they already were. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“What would you like it to mean?” he asked, his sharp teeth flashing in a grin.

“Absolutely nothing,” you retorted.

“Enough,” Yamato said. “Let’s finish this.”

“Please,” Sakura said. “I need a nap.”

You brought Suigetsu to the interrogation building, where Ibiki looked far too pleased at his new guest. He looked far less pleased when Suigetsu turned his limbs to water and slipped out of the rope bindings. “I like bondage as much as the next guy, but that was getting to be a little much,” he said, stretching out his shoulders.

Your team stared at him, flabbergasted. “You could have done that the whole time?” you asked.

“Yeah,” Suigetsu replied.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Well, you were far more willing to talk like civilized adults while you thought you had me secured,” he said with a shrug.

Sakura threw up her hands. “I’m done. I’m waiting outside.”

She marched out, dragging Naruto with her. Yamato spoke to Ibiki briefly, going over some things with him. That left you and Suigetsu facing off, him leaning against the wall and you glaring.

“Careful, sweetheart,” he teased. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you didn’t like me.”

“You’d be right,” you replied.

“What a shame,” Suigetsu said. “It’s been so long since I’ve met anyone who was as…vivacious as you.”

“Is that a joke?”

“No, but perhaps vivacious wasn’t the right word. It’s a shame Karin isn’t here, she’d be able to come up with all sorts of words. She’s brainy like that.”

Yamato and Ibiki came back over. “All right, we’re all done here,” he said. “The interrogation core will take custody of the sword.”

“Please and thank you,” you said. You pulled the sword and holster off your back, then handed it over with a sigh of relief.

Ibiki lets out a grunt of surprise and nearly drops the sword, only barely managing to cling to it.

“Hey, careful!” Suigetsu snapped. “That’s not a toy, you know.”

Ibiki ignored him as he dragged the sword deeper into the building. Other interrogators came around, guiding Suigetsu into a chair.

As you turned to go, you heard him say, “Hey, sweetheart.”

You didn’t want to look at him, but you did anyway.

“See you around,” he said with a wink. “I’ll need something pretty to look at once these ugly bastards are done with me.”

Your face burned, but you refused to dignify what he said with an answer. Instead, you marched out the door, letting Yamato steer you toward the Hokage building.

As long as you had your way, you and Suigetsu would never cross paths again.

Just to put into perspective just how dog shit the Timeskip is so far, here is all thats happened in 7 chapters

Sarada has been arguing B0ruto's innocence to Shikamaru for 3 yrs straight and nothing else to no avail

Himawari has been spending her time training with team 10 for 3 yrs and is the only one besides Sasuke who knows somethings off

Kawaki has been being vigilant working closely with Konoha to shrink Codes claw marks whenever they appear

Ada and Daemon are doing no different than they did in part 1

Code invaded Konoha

B0ruto arrives and stops Code from attacking Sarada who he tells to go help other civilians while he fights Code alone

Code loses to B0ruto who effortlessly beats him with a new Rasengan

None of the other cast showcase any new abilities despite training 3 yrs

Sarada didnt hide that she shes unaffected by Omnipotence and openly opposes Kawaki to his face with no plan

Its revealed Sasuke has been trapped in a tree by Code which is why B0ruto wants to make a deal but Code refuses

Bug, Moegi, & Soegi is also trapped in a tree

its revealed B0ruto now has toad summon and flying raijin and is now working with Kashin Koji

its discovered that Code fked up and accidentally created 4 overpowered clones he cant control that easily overpower B0ruto into retreat

Sumire still works with Amado

Amado is revealed to know his memories been altered by using logic to deduce it

its revealed Boruto trained with Sasuke for only a year and the other 2 years he spent under Kashin Koji

Sasuke is the one who cut Codes eye and sacrificed himself to let Boruto escape

B0ruto returns to inform Sarada of what happened to her dad and finally finds out Sumire is also unaffected but doesnt really react for some reason

Sarada learns her dads status and also doesnt really react for some reason

Boruto vows to save everyone himself

we learn nothing new about omnipotence

somehow the Bug clone can see Ada using her senrigan

the Moegi clone wants to kill Konohamaru, the Bug clone wants to kill Ada, the Sasuke clone wants to kill Sarada, and the Jigen clone wants to kill Naruto

Shikamaru now believes Sarada about the brainwashing and works together with B0ruto secretly

Shikamaru is only temporary 8th Hokage and not officially the 8th

Mitsuki fights B0ruto alone for 5 seconds and accepts defeat because he somehow subconsciously knows he's his true sun

Boruto essentially asks Mitsuki on a date to prove hes his real sun [like fr 'But if you insist on needing a sun...come find me anytime']

So overall what have we learned really? whats changed since part 1? Code is still the joke he always was even with his limiters off, the Konoha invasion was a massive let down with zero payoff that didnt even last more than 2 chapters, literally NO other characters besides Boruto showcase ANY new moves, not even Kawaki, Sarada's Sharingan is still MIA since the Boro fight, Sumire, Ada, and Daemon are doing no different than what they were doin before, their literally repeating what we already knew about omnipotence like its new information, every fight thus far with Boruto lasts 2 seconds cuz hes just THAT strong now, and everything everyone was hyped and anticipated for has already happened in ONLY 7 FKING CHAPTERS

Code invasion? done

Boruto reuniting with Sarada and Sumire? done

Boruto finding out Sumires also not affected? done

Ppl starting to realize Boruto really is innocent? done

Mitsuki and Boruto angst? done

Mitsuki vs Boruto? done

Finding out how Amado's been affected by omnipotence? done

Finding out whether Sarada and Sumire hid their unaffected by omniportence? done

Finding out what happened to Sasuke? done

Sarada finding out what happened to Sasuke? done

Finding out what happened to Kashin Koji? done

Seeing Boruto able to use some of Momoshikis abilities too? done

Literally all thats left to look forward to is Naruto and Sasuke getting unsealed cuz we know their not getting killed off, Boruto vs Kawaki which we already know Boruto is gonna win and their gonna reconcile, defeating the tree clones which we already know Boruto is primarily gonna take care of since he said so himself, freeing Sasuke and Naruto is also pretty much confirmed to be Boruto, and honestly Ada and Daemon are non factors in pretty much anything and Code is a joke Boruto can beat 1v1 so hes not even a major threat to be dealt with.

This is the most trash timeskip ever, when shippuden started things already kicked off with the Akatsuki and Gaara, when DBZ started shit got real with Raditz + Vegeta and Nappa and Goku dying, Boruto literally resolved every conflict besides him vs Kawaki and the tree clones already, but it dont even matter because both of those conflicts you know hes gonna win based on just these 7 chapters alone where hes apparently the ONLY PERSON THATS MADE ANY PROGRESS in his training over these 3 years while everyone else is still spamming their part 1 moves, but not only that, but Sasuke literally already told us what the future is so we aint even gotta guess.

'Then there wont be anyone who'll be able to stop you'

Like thats all you need to know right there to know where the story is goin, thats it, they literally TOLD you so theres suspense, no wondering how Boruto is gonna overcome these obstacles, no they just had Sasuke tell us Borutos gonna build on what he learned from him and eventually there wont be anyone able to stop him.

Key words being 'THERE WONT BE ANYONE WHO'LL BE ABLE TO STOP YOU'

So its fkin GGs already, yea we already know all the MCs are gonna win, but we dont know how, if they'll need help, theres some doubt that he might actually lose cuz sometimes the MC does lose and gotta come back after getting stronger or needs to team up where only their combined power can win etc, like theres opening for numerous possibilities that keeps the fans engaged and guessing exactly how its gonna go down.

But Boruto? nah lets just reveal everything thats gonna happen not even 10 chapters into the fkin timeskip

Boruto is gonna free Sasuke and deal with his clone, he literally tells us and Sarada this, Sasuke also told Boruto to take care of Sarada which Boruto intends to do just that, officially removing her from having any involvement in her fathers situation because Boruto has to atone for getting Sasuke trapped in the first place and he also has to keep his promise to keep his daughter safe, stop denying what has blatantly been spelled out for yall you KNOW this is whats coming

Boruto is gonna defeat Kawaki because he literally says thats what hes gonna do, hes following the same path Naruto did of not wanting to kill him but just beat some sense into him and reconcile as brothers, again stop denying whats blatantly being spelled out for you because this sequel has a consistent habit of telling you instead of showing you so theres no guessing whats gonna happen, you already know cuz they tell you 20 chapters before it happens

Nobody will be able to stop Boruto, he is a literal one man army, the most is he'll be delayed like with the tree clones but overall its already been foreshadowed that Boruto is gonna be the one who resolves all the conflicts because as Sasuke said, NOBODY will be able to stop him

If the clones could overpower Boruto into retreat then its already confirmed Kawaki is not beating any of them and gonna get his ass whooped by the leader clone pursuing Naruto and will most likely need to be saved by Boruto

Mitsuki is eventually gonna seek Boruto out just like he told him to and will realize Boruto really is his true sun, it took nothing but some sarcastic banter and Boruto not killing him during their fight to make Mitsuki waver, so all hype for their conflict is dead

Ada and Daemon I must repeat are non factors, they do absolutely nothing and bring nothing to the table, Ada is AT MOST a non human camera just like Ino is essentially a human telephone atp, and Daemon does absolutely jack shit besides laying on or sleeping on his sister or just looking menacing, they serve zero purpose and at best might be used for a bootleg cell saga moment where their absorbed by the clones to become infinitely more powerful, which atp is probably the only thing that'll make things interesting again since it actually would even the playing field instead of Boruto being the one man army he has been thus far

Kawaki I have no idea what hes been doing these 3 years but he obviously wont be this much of a scrub for long otherwise Kawaki vs Boruto would be the most boring rival fights in the history of rival fights, so somewhere along the lines we know hes gonna get a power boost, but that wont even be satisfying because he had 3 yrs to make progress and yet he stayed the same level he was in part 1?

Even Naruto made progress and showcased some new moves and growth, sure he was inferior to Sasuke but to act like Naruto just made NO progress at all not even a little bit to show he atleast did SOMETHING during that time is crazy, but this is an issue with everybody not just Kawaki because literally NO fkin body has made any progress but Boruto, apparently hes the only one thats been training which is ridiculous, especially for Sarada who's always spouting shes gonna be Hokage and not let Kawaki do what he wants

Well you could've fkin fooled me cuz I aint seen her do nothin worthwhile yet, still chidori and fireballs, still forgetting she has a whole sharingan since a fight that happened 3 years ago which was over 40 chapters ago, probably still dont even know she has MS, do yall not understand how ridiculous that is? that NOBODY not even her has showcased any progress?

'But its just 7 chapters' weekly manga with way less than 40 pages showcased more than Boruto which is monthly with 40 pages each chapter has, yall cannot defend this abysmal writing and pacing because theres no excuse for why a monthly manga with far more pages to work with accomplishes less than weekly mangas that had far less pages to work with

Half of these 7 chapters has been them repeating the exact same information about omnipotence that we already knew just in different wording, but its all the same information we already knew.

Keep in mind this could be dialogue telling use what Sarada and Sumire have done to try and fight against omnipotence which apparently is just yelling at ppl but imagine we actually got exposition detailing how Sumire has been looking into scientific ways to combat the chakra distortions that omnipotence caused to alter their memories and keep them brainwashed, how Sarada has been sneaking intel on anything and everything Otsutsuki related to try and find anything that might help them counter omnipotence, how she even went to Orochimaru to try and see what he might know or have that could help, hell maybe Sumire even goes back to her fathers old lab to see if she could find any traces of SOMETHING that could help since he had the Gozu Tennou which was related to Kaguya so who knows what other clues he might have

Like imagine we got THAT exposition instead, imagine we got 'Sarada and Sumire have actually been bustin their ass over these 3 yrs' instead of

'omnipotence is so difficult to counter, nothing we say works, no amount of proof sways anybody cuz omnipotence just makes them not care and disregard it, ugh how do we fix this?, oh theres no way to fix it cuz they'll all just eventually forget anyway, whatever suspicions they have will just fade overtime, logic doesnt work, Ada doesnt know how to control or undo it, omnipotence cant be resisted, except by Sasuke, Amado, Hima, Shikamaru, and now Mitsuki apparently, but logic doesnt work so its pointless trying to convince anyone that their memories been altered' even tho Amado literally uses logic to realize his memories been altered.

Yea we really needed that spelled out for us 7 chapters straight, thats totally what fans wanted to hear when the timeskip started, just constantly reminding us of how strongly brainwashed everyone is and how unbeatable it is instead of what they've been doing to try and fix it and what new skills they've gotten over the years to deal with the Code threat and his army

I and Im pretty sure most ppl dont give af how difficult omnipotence is, we already had Momoshiki break it down for us at the end of part 1, and then Sarada and Sumire hammer in again just how difficult omnipotence is to overcome, so why tf did we need 6 more chapters telling us how difficult omnipotence is? WE GET IT but what have they been doing to try and fight it? just TALKING? yea Im done

I've ranted long enough but I think yall get the point, this timeskip is a friggin joke, the most boring and time wasting timeskip I've seen in any anime, and I've watched Yashahime and even that used its time better establishing things than Boruto has

This whole thing just feels like some weird self insert poorly written fanfic where their the cool badass MC who comes back and just beats everybody and hes just so cool and look how hardened he is from all hes been through [barely anything] oh and look at that rizz he got all the girls wantin him and siding with him and hes just so cool and awsome and just the best MC ever unlike [insert far better written MCs here] and ya know, their just the cool unbeatable badass that all the girls want that they'll never be but wish they were irl, thats what this timeskip feels like atp, it doesnt feel real or earned it just feels like someone living out their fantasies through Boruto cuz their losers irl.

I aint sayin thats what Ikemoto or ghostwriter-kun are doin, but I aint sayin thats not what their doin either, either its their own self insert fantasies or the self insert fantasies of alot of Boruto's pathetic fanbase that wants Boruto to be this rizz king badass on some Sasuke or Eren Jager type vibe they know he and they will never be, because as I've used DBZ and and Shippuden as examples of good written timeskips, you tell me if this doesnt scream self insert fanfic to you.

BUT FOR THE GAME: 14. The Time Travel Not-Fix-It

Honestly, if I had the output power you do, I would be happy with that haha regardless of the WIP List's crushing weight!! You are a powerhouse man! As for the "Time Travel Not-Fix It" well. It's an SNS genfic for one (though with definite pre-slash vibes). But the premise is that after Sasuke and Naruto's rasengan/chidori clash during VOTE2, they do not wake up with their arms blown off- instead, Sasuke wakes up back in his twelve year old body, four years in the past. Cue Sasuke scrambling to figure out what the fuck happened, is this reality, and if it is, what to do in his position. But surprise surprise, nothing is that simple. But the twist of the "not" part of Not-Not-Fix it is a spoiler I am keeping in my pocket for now haha- but I love this story bc it feeds my inner author drama queen with numerous twists, turns, and surprises along the way. Sasuke doesn’t remember passing out.

He doesn’t remember… a lot, actually. Hadn’t he been…

…doing something?

He’s inexplicably, disconcertingly groggy. Mind fuzzy and sore as he tries to locate his bearings. Cracking his eyes, he sees the dark shadows of what is unmistakably forest ahead of him. Under his cheek, the distinctive texture of a bedroll. It all only serves to confuse him further. He doesn’t know much, but he hadn’t been in a forest, of that he’s certain. But further than that, he hasn’t slept on bedroll in years.

Something is wrong. Why can’t he remember?

“Sasuke-kun?”

He blinks, twisting his head and shoving down the urge to vomit.

“Sasuke-kun,” Sakura says again, voice hushed as she crouches next to his head, “Sorry to wake you, but it’s your turn to take watch.”

Watch?

What?

He props himself on an arm, staring as her details come into focus. As he watches her, he’s able to recognize that what he’s seeing doesn’t match his memory. Her hair’s far too long. Instead of a chuunin’s uniform she’s wearing the red and white dress from their childhood years on Team Seven.

The Strength of One Hundred Seal is nowhere to be seen.

“If I still have a place in your heart, no matter how small it may be… Please, I’m begging you- don’t slip away any further.”

A flood of memory hits him. Facing down the Juubi, Sakura and Naruto at his back. The reverberating shockwave of power that burst from her as she released the Godaime Hokage’s Creation Rebirth technique.

“Sasuke-kun?” the strange mirage repeats, looking concerned now.

He rises at last, buying himself more time to figure out just what the fuck is happening right now.

He knows now something is very wrong. It’s just a matter of determining what it is so he can obliterate it and get back to— whatever the fuck he’d been doing. It’s on the tip of his brain— it is…

He rubs his eyes as she continues to look had him oddly, only to rear back in shock, glancing at his arm in alarm. White arm warmers. Throwing back the covers, it feels like his sanity is melting out his ears.

White shorts. Blue, standard issue sandals.

His hand flies to his forehead. The flat ting of his fingernails meeting metal rings in his ears like funeral bells.

What is happening to him?

“Hn,” he mutters, too shaken and unsteady to trust his voice.

Fortunately, Sakura just nods before standing and retreating to her own sleeping bag, visibly dead on her feet.

His hands shake as he leverages himself to his feet. Eyes locked on the ground, hesitant to take in the rest of his surroundings but knowing its inevitable. What’s coming is inevitable.

He releases a shaky breath and raises his gaze.

Just a couple feet away, the third bedroll. Blond hair peeking above the blankets.

“I can’t let you kill me… because I’m your one and only friend.”

The Chibaku Tensei, siphoning the power of the bijuu.

The massive chakra avatars, merging into one.

Punch after punch, the strength of his body waning.

Naruto, getting up again— every time.

The Rinnegan draining away the dregs of the jinchuuriki’s power.

An upper cut to the jaw.

“Just let me end you already!”

The screeching of a thousand birds.

The howling of the Rasengan.

The color bleeding from the world in a blinding blast of light.

And then nothing.

… Naruto…

Sasuke feels so tired all of a sudden.

… He takes to the trees for his watch.

What is going on?

Timetravel Fun: Teaching

Okay, so I know I've already rambled about my timetravel thoughts in other posts, BUT! I'm continuing to think about the potential Timetravel Fic with Kakashi and what would happen if he got Minato's half of Kuruma.

Anyway, part of timetravel fun is also to imagine what Kakashi would change as a teacher for Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke the second time around. To start with Kakashi would probably give them more focused training, and keep missions to 1-2 time(s)/week. (They'd only get D-Missions within the village at the beginning anyway). A good potential set-up could be to do individual training during the morning, and then group-training in the afternoons.

So, Team 7 at 12y old, fresh out of the academy.

Naruto's weaknesses is basically that he was neglected and not taught enough by the adults around him. He portrayed as a bit dumb early on, but honestly? A lot of that can be blamed on the fact Naruto was a high-energy child desperate for acknowledgement who simply wasn't taught enough from the teachers. Keep in mind, Iruka was Naruto's hometeacher - but that doesn't mean Iruka was Naruto's ONLY teacher. (Iruka was great but not perfect. Still, no blame on him. He can't teach Naruto EVERYTHING).

Hell, no one understood Naruto had trouble with the basic jutsu(s) at the academy because they used too little chakra - and he had a LOT of it, which also made it difficult to control the vast amount. This would obviously not be the same in a time-travel fic, at least not to the same extent, but it's still something to take into account since Kakashi was only 14y old when Naruto was born and likely would be unable to (officially) adopt him. Naruto's social skills suffered greatly from not being able to have friends as well, as often seen in his earlier years with how he handles his interactions with Sakura - his crush. So Kakashi basically getting Naruto some playdates would probably help Naruto's social skills a lot.

At the other hand Naruto's biggest strength is his stubbornness to never give up, but also his massive chakra reserves. In a time-travel scenario Kakashi would also be able to take advantage of Naruto's shadowclones to teach him things quicker, just like Kakashi originally did when he taught Naruto how to evolve the Rasengan.

So, to start I'd like to think Kakashi uses at least one or two of Naruto's clones to read up on academy stuff he never learnt/remembered, but Kakashi would also teach Naruto a new jutsu or two.

I feel Rasengan should still be Jiraiya's jutsu to teach, but Kakashi teaching Naruto something like "Wind Release: Air Bullets" would pair nicely with Naruto's shadowclones. (Just imagine the damage from +10 clones shooting off air bullets at the same time!) . It's an attack which wouldn't be too overpowered at the same time as it can gradually grow in strength as Naruto becomes stronger. It would also give Naruto a ranged attack, which means Naruto isn't forced to ONLY rely on clones and brute force early on.

Kakashi having Minato's half of Kuruma also gives him an opportunity to nudge Naruto in the right direction of getting to know Kuruma much earlier - not to mention getting Naruto to ask "the Kyuubi" what his name is. Heck, Kakshi might even be able to go with Naruto and visit Kuruma together in the mindscape because of the new connection, starting the process of getting to know each other much earlier.

So, Sakura then. Her weakness (at 12y old) was mainly taijutsu/physical and low chakra reserve. In theory she already knew a lot of jutsus, but we never really get to see her use a lot of them early on because of her low levels of chakra - and later she's the healer and not really supposed to shoot off too many jutsu(s) left & right in case she needs to heal someone.

On the bright side Sakura was already really smart at 12y old though, as evident when she scored among the highest in the academy. (Probably part of why many people like to dive deeper into her friendship with Shikamaru in fics, too). In order to grow your chakra reserves you basically need a lot of physical and mental training, so I think Sakura's reserves would naturally build up a lot once she gets some strict taijutsu training from Kakashi. She already has the knowledge - she just needs the physical abilities to back them up.

As for jutsu(s), I'm not taking away Sakura's medical training away from Tsunade, but Kakashi could still teach Sakura how to fight with that tight chakra control towards her hands/feet in order to land harder hits. Kakashi originally figured Sakura would lean more towards genjutsu, but in timetravel I'm pretty sure Kakashi wouldn't mind letting her focus on taijutsu instead, with perhaps knowing 1-2 genjutsus as back-up. Focusing on taijutsu works well to prepare for the future training with Tsunade, too.

Also, Kakashi has always had a soft spot for Sakura. For the timetravel I'm thinking Kakashi can let Sakura sign a contract with his dog summons. (It's already proven you can have more than one contract, so this wouldn't stop Sakura from signing with Lady Slug later on). Not only would it give them a way to communicate if Kakashi and the kids got separated on a mission, but adding some extra tracking and protection abilities to the team wouldn't hurt. I'm also thinking Kakashi could teach her "Earth Release: Rock Shelter" or "Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall". It'd add an defensive touch to the team and balance her focus on taijutsu.

Lastly, Sasuke. He's a difficult one, because many of his strengths AND weaknesses depends on how much is changed in the time-travel. Because Sasuke's strength mainly comes from the fact he has previous experience - he was trained (mainly by Itachi & his dad, by the looks of it), not to mention Sasuke also trained a lot by himself, even before he entered the academy. The trauma of having his entire clan killed also meant Sasuke was highly motivated to become stronger as an individual, but not very focused on becoming friends with the rest of his team. If Kakashi manages to change the time-line enough that the clan is spared, or at least more members survive, Sasuke would no longer have the same early motivations. Not to mention Kakashi already knows the truth of Itachi.

Still, I'd like to think Kakashi waits with teaching Sasuke the Chidori this time around - at least until he knows for sure he has changed enough of the timeline that Sasuke will no longer feel the need to abandon Konoha. It's also worth taking into account Sasuke originally awakened his sharingan when his clan was killed and re-awakened it in the first fight against Haku, so depending on how much the time-line is changed there would also need to be a new event where Sasuke actually awakens his sharingan. (Aka, Sasuke wouldn't even be ABLE to use Chidori until he awakens the sharingan). Still, wouldn't be too difficult to make an event which causes a near-death or a situation where Sasuke thinks Kakashi or one of his friends dies.

With that said Sasuke's main issue is team-work (hopefully to an lesser extent in a timeline where the Uchiha clan survives), so a lot of focus would probably be put on that. Sasuke already knows a lot of ninjutsu and taijutsu by the time he graduates from the academy anyway, so Kakashi might just teach Sasuke a better fire-jutsu or fuuinjutsu instead.

Obviously I'd like to think Kakashi is able to save Sai (& Shin? Though Idk how possible it is since Shin was sick too) and Tenzo/Yamato too much earlier too, even though Kakashi wouldn't become their sensei. It's still possible Kakashi can argue for them to be added to his team though.

Something like: "Sai is better placed with a real team (aka, theirs) to help him re-adjust to a normal life in Konoha quicker", and Yamato should be an easy argument with +2 Jinchuuriki in the team. Another possibility, assuming Kakashi is 18 (again) at this point, is to claim Sai as a ward of the Hatake clan. Sai is the same age as Neji/Lee/Tenten rather than Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, but it'd be really funny to see a 13y old Sai interact with the 12y old Team 7. x)

Anyway, in general I think Kakashi would do a much better job at teaching the second time around. Not only has he already processed a lot of his trauma at that point, but he would also have more actual teaching experience.

Would Naruto really lose to MS Sasuke? Fans have been saying that, but Sage mode Naruto was able to make a Rasenshuriken as big as Kurama in their fight. He also got the massive rasengan mega barrage, I mean Sasuke does have more haxed abilities but Sage mode Naruto is still no joke.

Menma: You should rest. I almost killed you with that massive black Rasengan I launched at the village.

Charasuke: *pokes Menma’s cheek* You… you’re actually alive?

Menma: So it would appear.

Charasuke: Appear? *clenches fist before pulling Menma’s face towards him* Don’t do that! Don’t sound so detached!

Menma: Forgive me. Old habit. *smirks* You big crybaby.

Charasuke: Bastard! *lets go of Menma’s face* Why? How many times are you going to lie to me? *nearly falls to the ground. He can barely stand up straight due to the heavy injuries he sustained from getting caught by the Rasengan. He has to lean back on the wall for support.*

NO WAY KNY X NARUTO AU???

MAIN PLOT:

Basically, Kumo successfully kidnaps Hinata, she grows up there in the care of Kanae’s family(who basically see her as their own child). Kumo makes Hinata take on a new name, which is Kocho Shinobu (Hinata does not remember her name or last name well due to being 3 when she was kidnaped). Years pass, and both Kanae and Shinobu become missing nin when they leave Kumo, half because they don’t feel like being a shinobi is the right thing for them, and half other motivations.

They both have a knack for kenjutsu(weapons based fighting) and end up catching wind of the demon slayer corps when they are funnily enough, in the land of fire. At this point Konoha knows that there is an unaccounted for Hyuuga running around the land of fire. Due to them thinking Hinata is dead they don’t realise that oh shit, that’s the missing Hyuua heir.

They end up joining the demon slayer corps when Kanae was 14 and when Shinobu was 13. Events in cannon follow after this (Kanae dying, finding Kanao and Aoi, etc etc). Years pass and Shinobu becomes a Hashira. Throughout the years, Shinobu gets flashbacks of living in the village hidden in the leaves in brief glimpses, including shinobi training and usage of the byakugan. Shinobu trains her byakugan, but chooses not to use it unless absolutely necessary. On the run up to Shinobu’s fight with Douma, Shinobu and the demon slayers that are there in cannon (+Tengen and Rengoku maybe still active/ alive hashira due to Mugen Train and entertainment district turning out differently or being slightly stronger?) team up with a group of shinobi(rest of Konoha 12 + their teachers) that have been sent from Konoha to get rid of Douma. After initial surprise because oh shit, that's the missing Hyuuga heir, they team up to fight against the upper moons (fire jutsu, chakra conductive metals and maybe the rasengan and other jutsu’s like that come in clutch here).

After the battle,the KNY characters that die survive. Hinata Shinobu remembers a ton more memories. The demon slayers present agree to go and see what Konohagakure is like and maybe get questioned in T&I.

AU HEADCANONS:

Tengen Uzui is Jiraya’s grandson or great grandson from a one night stand when Jiraya was younger

The Rengoku are an offshoot of the Uzumaki clan that did not want to be known as shinobi

Uzushio had a close relationship with the demon slayer corps before they were annihilated

the Ubayashiki are distantly related to the Hyuuga

One of Sanemi and Genya’s parents was a Hatake(maybe Sakumo’s cousin???)

The Kamado were a reasonably wealthy merchant clan that used to be samurai before their downfall which was lack of offspring, illness and a demon attack. The Harunos knew of them and had trade deals with them

The Tsugikuni were a famous samurai clan once employed by the fire daimyo’s court

The Kages know of the demon slayer organisation and categorise them as a missing nin group, but they never put them in the bingo book due to the fact that it would cause widespread panic they’ve also had testimonials that the demon slayer corps are in fact legitimate due to shinobi getting caught up in demon hunter vs demon battles

All missions where shinobi run into demon slayer vs demon battles are immediately changed to S Rank(top secret), and kept in a cabinet only the current Hokage can access

Shinobi have been turned into demons before, and depending on how powerful they are their blood demon art is normally nearly at a lower moon rank in sheer power. They have get killed as fast as possible to stop massive civilian casualties

if a person with a dojutsu (byakugan/sharingan/rinnegan etc) trains to use a breathing technique, their dojutsu eyes appear darker

[REFINED CONTROL] “The many feats of ninja are made possible as a result of chakra. To have more of it is important and valued, but only those who can properly control it can bring out its full potential. Some may spend a lifetime in training for that control, but they aren’t you. You have acquired especially good chakra control and talent with improving it. This is vital when attempting to learn or master any of the more delicate techniques such as Genjutsu or Medical Ninjutsu, or doing anything at all for those with especially massive reserves. Without proper control, you may end up spending too much for jutsu, or fail entirely. Higher levels of Experience represent being able to perform even more complex feats of control. Techniques like Rasengan are, after all, entirely built upon masterful control.”

[SENSOR] “Although it’s already been said, shinobi must be born with the ability to sense chakra. While mass quantities of chakra are visible and can physically affect their surroundings - something apparent to anyone - a Sensor has the ability to pick up a ninja doing nothing at all. You acquire the rare status of Sensor, along with training and latent ability with your gift. This allows you to sense chakra whether or not it’s actively being used for some grand display, from potentially very long distances. You can also tell people apart by the unique signature of their chakra. Trained Sensors can also determine if someone is lying by checking for discrete fluctuations in their chakra, or affected by some form of Genjutsu or corruption by scanning for irregularities. Sensing chakra is an active ability that requires one to focus and knead their own chakra, so it’s traditionally more support oriented. Higher levels of Experience will allow you to sense chakra from longer distances, more easily, allowing you to potentially do so in the midst of more hectic situations. You will also be able to examine a target’s chakra more extensively to pick out more complex or finite details.”

[FUINJUTSU] “Fuinjutsu is one of the arts with the greatest number of misconceptions. Although sealing techniques involve chakra infused text, not all chakra infused text falls under the banner of Fuinjutsu. As a quick point of reference, all Fuinjutsu involve sealing something. You receive a general knowledge, proficiency, and talent in the art. This covers quite a few fundamentals as it requires some understanding of kanji, arrays, and written chakra formulae. With these fundamentals, a good brush, and chakra infused ink, you’re capable of a number of feats. Fuinjutsu can seal basically anything if enough time, effort, and skill is put into the creation of that ‘seal.’ Basic examples are the common storage scroll which can condense equipment, among other things, within a lightweight paper scroll. Seals could vacuum flames right off a burning victim or structure and seal them away. Seals could likewise be applied to block off someone’s chakra, preventing external manifestation of it. One could even store their own techniques and draw upon them later. Figure out the correct formulae, simple or complex it may be, and you could seal anything. Higher levels of Experience bestow a wider and deeper array of knowledge, along with more advanced techniques. While most seals are meant to be created ahead of time, some can be created and applied by hand, in the moment, through expenditure of chakra. Go high enough and you could even hold the expertise for sealing away the Tailed Beasts.”

[CHILD PRODIGY] “The title of genius is handed out like candy; sweet and plentiful. It’s true that many young ninja can be seen as talented and quick growing but are they really geniuses? Compared to those like Itachi who graduated at six and became a chunin by ten? Not even close. You’re a real genius, someone who has such immense talent as a shinobi that you can pick up in weeks what takes others years. Your growth is unbelievable to most, outstripping the talented enough to make them look normal. As a consequence of your accelerated growth, you may by reduce your age by however much you desire. However, you may not exceed the ridiculous age/power level feats of others. You could graduate as a five year old Genin like Kakashi, but four? Now that’s just ridiculous.”

ITEMS

[FOREHEAD PROTECTOR] “A strip of cloth with a metal plate attached, often with a symbol engraved on the plate. The pride of a ninja, even one without a village. Almost as long as there have been ninja, they have kept their protectors close. Yours has the symbol of your home village on it, perhaps with a slash to mark your abandonment of that village, or even a personal symbol of your own choice. Despite the name, ninja will often wear it in alternate fashions, such as a necklace or armband or even a belt. Through a quirk of fate, the forehead protector will never be scratched unless you intend it.”

[STANDARD NINJA TOOLKIT] “A pouch covered belt that contains all an aspiring ninja will ever need in the field. Kunai, senbon, shuriken, ninja wire, makibishi, a smoke bomb or two, rations, a basic first aid kit and a sturdy few camping tools. Not too many of each but they slowly reappear when used or lost. It’ll save you a few Ryo at the ninja-mart over the years, at least.”

[SEAL KIT] “The core to any sealmaster’s work. Reams of high quality paper, the sort that won’t tear at high speed movement or be damaged from water soaking. These are packed tightly into a pouch, which also carries a number of writing implements and several ink holders. All these resources replenish soon after and are quick to be retrieved from the various pouches.”

[NINJA ARMOR] “Most ninja don’t rely on armor, given their preferences for agile combat and quick battles. But not relying on something doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a little of it. This option covers the various forms of mundane protective gear found in the world. The first tier, costing 50NP, represents the common Flak Jacket that most shinobi forces rely on. Providing moderate protection to the body without hindering limb movement, it also includes a range of useful pockets and hidden slots for any ninja tools. This could cover any kind of light armor as well. The second tier, costing 100NP, represents heavier kinds of armor rarely seen. Shinobi Battle Armor that was traditional in the Warring Clans periods can be found here, providing good protection against mundane blows but still not replacing chakra reinforcement against anything serious.”

[CHAKRA WEAPON] “A weapon made from a specially treated material. Taking on the form of some kind of mundane melee weapon, it is extremely receptive towards chakra. Any Chakra Flow techniques that a wielder possesses are far easier when used in concert with this weapon, as it naturally absorbs and releases chakra according to the user’s will. A Chakra Blade might vibrate at high speed in response to Lightning Chakra or cut with extreme sharpness and distance when imbued with Wind Chakra. The weapons, due to their material, are difficult to break even for high level Shinobi. This purchase can instead be used for two smaller weapons, such as two trench knives or claw gauntlets, instead of one larger one.”

BLOODLINES/CLANS

[UZUMAKI CLAN] “The Uzumaki Clan is the mostly extinct relative of the Senju Clan. They’re not as omnicapable as the Senju when it comes to being ninja, but their life force is even more overwhelmingly intense compared to others. Uzumaki naturally have longer lifespans than normal people, and age slower compared to others too. Uzumaki are also capable of surviving much more severe injuries, while likewise being more capable of recovering from injury or exhaustion. Uzumaki can potentially heal others or themselves by consuming the Uzumaki’s chakra, though this often requires biting into the Uzumaki and can be dangerous. Uzumaki, for the most part, are also naturally talented when it comes to Fuinjutsu or sealing techniques. Higher levels of Experience doesn’t do terribly much. Your life force will likely have been cultivated to greater extents, and you’ll have more chakra as a result, but many of the Uzumaki’s talents require knowledge of relevant skills.”

[UZUMAKI CLAN: GIFTED] “Some members of the Uzumaki Clan inherit unique abilities. While not as rare as the Kaguya or Kurama Clan’s bloodline abilities, these aren’t traits that all members were gifted with. On purchase, you will be though. The first is sensory abilities, which many Uzumaki found themselves gifted with, and natural talent in this role. Much more significantly however is a unique chakra that allows the production of ‘Adamantine Chains.’ Adamantine Chains are constructs formed from one’s chakra resembling actual chains. They can be manipulated by the creator’s will; moving, splitting apart, or used alongside various sealing techniques of the clan. Their durability is extreme, such that a stronger user of this ability could restrain Tailed Beasts with them. Higher levels of Experience aid in reaching this potential, bestowing more techniques relating to the chains, and enhancing those sensory abilities too.”

DRAWBACKS

[GAIDEN] “With such a rich history, who could blame you for wanting experience some of it firsthand? This option allows you to set your starting time further back in the world of Naruto. You can go as far back as the childhoods of Madara and Hashirama. Any further back and it fades into murky pre-history. You can either stay for ten years as normal or extend your time up to when you would normally leave. Any drawbacks taken will alter to remain as serious even in the past. If circumstances make a drawback impossible or ineffectual, it cannot be taken.”

[A NEW WORLD] “There’s been more than one variation on the Naruto world so far. This option allows you to go to one of those. This can range from a true version of the Genjutsu World, one of the alternate realities in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, an alternate world from some of the art to outright fanfiction and custom made creations. Whatever your choices, what you gain from this jump will still be based on the primary canon of Naruto and all drawbacks will remain in place. They will either adjust to be as threatening in the newly chosen world or be unable to be picked if truly incompatible.”

[FILLER UP] “While the primary canon of this universe remains, there’s an awful lot to add on. This option allows you to toggle on and off every additional piece of media connected to the Naruto franchise. How I would've had Naruto's power progression during his time under Jiraiya

1. He learns to become a 'master' of sealing*

He has 4 advantages that make him become a master of sealing faster than others

1a. Massive chakra reserves means he can practice sealing longer than others can

1b. He is an Uzumaki - they were known for being good at sealing, in order to not make the clan too OP I would imagine it as they are very fast at powering/laying down seals - this means Naruto can do more practice seals in an hour than another person could in 2 or 3 meaning he is more efficient with his practice time

1c. He doesn't have to do missions, have any other distractions and is more motivated than your usual learner - your standard person is an adult who might learn sealing whilst doing other jobs to pay for rent/food and have a social life ect Naruto living off Jiraiya in random places means he doesn't have to worry about that

1d. Jiraiya - he has the personal tutoring of one of the best seal masters in the world who can judge when he's ready for the next step, give him more information than most have access to and notice what he's doing wrong

All of this ends up with him being able to use the most advanced and powerful seals in Naruto verse*

--- In the interests of not making this OP I would have his limits be: that he rushed the fundamentals a little bit so his basic seals aren't as good/efficient as someone who wasn't rushed to mastery - this looks like his storage seals not being able to store as many things or last as long as ones made by standard seal masters

Also that he didn't learn many different types of seals other than basic proof of concept ones except for the highest level of seal making - so someone who has specialised in barrier seals will know a lot more types of barrier seals than Naruto but Naruto would know a couple of the basic ones and be able to do some of the most advanced/powerful barrier seals that the barrier seal specialist might not be able to do

* I'll go more into what I think the levels of sealing would look like in a different post

2) The reason he learned to become good at seals would be to be able to master being a jinchuriki/tailed beast mode

I imagine it as his seal having been created by the fourth hokage one of the best seal masters in the world who was married to a jinchuriki went on to create the most advanced tailed beast seal

So Naruto's seal would actually let him just forcibly take all the advantages he wanted from Kurama without his co-operation - that is draw out chakra, notice if there is genjutsu and at peak force Kurama into creating tailed beast balls for him

But in order to do all of that Naruto would need to be able to manipulate and control the seal himself

Importantly I think this would be important in creating a bond of equals between Naruto and Kurama because the nine tails needs to know that Naruto wouldn't need his co-operation in order to trust his intentions

So I think within a year and half Naruto would be able to act close to that of a perfect jinchuriki and have some relationship with Kurama + be really good withs seals - able to reapply his own seal if needed

3) From there I think the remaining time would be when Naruto learns sage mode + masters rasengan, that he would be taught it so he wouldn't have to rely on the nine tails, because being able to do those two puts you at equivalent to a jinchuriki

His experience with learning to use the nine tails chakra would be what makes him able to learn sage mode so well and safely - other people don't have any experience handling chakra with that level of density but Naruto would with the nine tails chakra which he learned to use with training wheels on basically

There would be some questions as to whether it was worth it to spend so much time without actually getting more dangerous/combat capable but the point would be learning sage mode also taught him to balance his emotions

Kurama would not like him using it

4) He'd also have been taught the basics of cancelling genjutsu and basic fire jutsu + fairly advanced wind jutsu

What he would not have learned is many jutsu relating to do ninja jobs or anything outside of getting really good at fighting

I've been rereading naruto and was struck with how much I love Iruka. Can you spare a soul a small rant regarding that beautiful being? (Or about Sai, that awkward boi is precious is all his dick-loving glory)

If there is one thing I can always be counted on to do, it's yell about my favorite man in the world, Umino Iruka

Yes I will also be yelling about Sai bc I love him too

Sai:

First and foremost: he has a good arc. Discovering that he still has emotions despite Shin’s death? Finally finishing the book he started as a tiny child for Shin because he remembers what that connection is like?

His struggles with socializing (his joking about Naruto’s dick is fun to me bc despite doing it wrong, he accidentally gets the spirit of it) and his dependence on books (there's one literate boy in Konoha and it's him) are such good details

That crop top? Best choice

Making him resemble Sasuke was risky and considering my thoughts on Sasuke, maybe didn't work how Kishi intended but I don't hate it

I wish we'd seen him spend more time with Yamato. They're the only characters from Root who we meet. Yamato would be a good person to spend time with as Sai adjusts, especially since they don't have the student-teacher relationship that Naruto and Sakura have with Yamato

Speaking of- Sai has the coolest style. I do not care about rasengan. I do not care about chidori. I do not care about reincarnation or only caring about people’s safety when they're directly in front of you

But I do care about those little ink animals he can make!!! I care about him holding that massive brush when he's doing the sealing during the war

And I care about him being a member of Root and likely highly skilled but getting nerfed bc god forbid anyone look capable when Naruto and Sasuke are around

I care about him learning how to read Sakura well enough that he could read her smile as false

Sai is wonderful and I love him

Iruka:

Iruka is the reason we have the story. There is no Naruto without him. He's also the reason we have the kind of story we have bc not only did Iruka save Naruto’s life, he’s the person Naruto learned to love from

This kid has never felt wanted, and the first love he feels and recognizes as love* is Iruka being ready to die for him. Naruto’s desperation for attention suddenly gets fulfilled in the worst moment of his life. He’s a little kid and a teacher he trusted drops bombshell after bombshell on him. Everybody lied to him and hates him because he's a monster. He killed Iruka’s parents

But three times, Iruka risks dying for him. The barrage of kunai and shuriken. The fūma shuriken in the back. The fūma shuriken when Iruka is sitting on the ground, exhausted

Iruka loves loudly. He's frequently yelling or crying bc he's overcome with emotion; he adores the students in his care so much that he can't keep quiet- except when he gives Naruto his hitai-ate (which Naruto wears until it's totally worn out, which is the best detail in the whole fucking narrative). That's the only time when Iruka is quiet and happy

Naruto definitely soaked that loudness up. All of his big declarations about people’s worth in part one have the shape of Iruka in them. When he pleads with Zabuza not to belittle Haku, that's Iruka. When he tells Neji that he's going to fix the Hyūga, that's Iruka

Imo things go wrong with Sasuke partly because Naruto is the aggressive one. Iruka’s kind of forcefulness is always in defense of someone. With Sasuke, Naruto is pursuing. That isn't “I see your worth, and I value it.” That's “I want you so you have to stay”. That's a selfish love, a child who's indulged instead of parented

But that's a digression!

Iruka is unique in two meaningful ways:

1) he apologizes. How many times do adults apologize directly to children in this story? How many times do they question what they've done and say they made a mistake to the child they wronged? Iruka is the only parental figure who sees Naruto as having inherent worth. Not as a jinchūriki. Not as Minato and Kushina’s son. Not as a hero. When he's little Uzumaki Naruto, failure, Iruka apologizes for not seeing how much Naruto was hurting. Iruka was 22 and still waking up from nightmares after ten years (that's a sign of chronic trauma! who else is still that deep in ptsd?) but he’s the only one who took any responsibility for Naruto’s pain

2) he’s a nobody. Everyone around Naruto is special. All his teachers are geniuses or notoriously powerful. Iruka is just a guy. His name means nothing. But out of all the adults who have specific reasons to look after Naruto, Iruka is the only one who does. Iruka doesn't lie to Naruto. Aside from the Kurama thing (I can't fault him for not breaking the rules to tell a child he's got a monster inside him) he tries to obfuscate once, when he's trying to stop Naruto from dying needlessly in the war. Iruka isn't strong enough to stop Naruto, but he does try, and when he realizes he can't, he does one further special thing: he tells Naruto to survive

Who tells Naruto that? Who, other than Iruka, takes the time to tell Naruto, in a heated moment, that Naruto’s life matters because he's Naruto? Which adult in Naruto's life consistently sees him and treats him as a child?

* Iruka taking the time to parent him by making Naruto clean up after himself and staying there to supervise, along with taking Naruto to Ichiraku to buy him food, are also love, but they wouldn't ping to Naruto as such
