Pattern Overload!
Tumblr media
I have a LOT of doll patterns that I've picked up over the years of hoarding fabric and patterns I was planning on making when I 'got better' at sewing.
I was planning on getting better via osmosis - the knowledge in the fibers and the paper instructions would magically seep into my brain despite my never actually practicing, reading or using any of them.
So aside from a huge stash of fabric with no patterns in mind, and a whole BUNCH of patterns that I now find I have no desire to make....
These are here. I'll got through them one by one for ease:
My Etsy patterns are from Pemberley Threads - these are historical patterns based on actual dresses worn in the past. I LOVE historical dress and am really excited to start these but I'm a little nervous as they are... complicated!
PemberleyThreads:
Elizabeth 1780s Jacket and Petticoat
 Anne Shirtwaist and Skirt
Antoinette 18th Century Cap and Stays Corset
Charlotte 1780s Robe a l'Anglaise

Vintage pattern shopping report
I love vintage patterns. I am enterally inspired by Buried Diamond's homemade wardrobe, and she really got me into collecting and sewing my own. I am lucky that my local art re-use store has a good-sized collection, and these are the ones I picked up today:
Tumblr media
Butterick #6681. This is a western-esque pattern, where the shirt has gorgeous pointed yoke details at the front and the back. I also love the piping details on the skirt and the pants, something I definitely want to try.
Tumblr media
McCalls 4558. This pattern caught my attention because of all its tailoring details. I've been eyeing the Closet Core Jasika blazer pattern, but this seems like another way to learn more about tailoring
Tumblr media
Simplicity 2598. This is a pajama pattern from the 1940s. It's not my size, but I just saw this pattern review for a similar pair of pjs and I couldn't help myself!

About that Bustline: McCalls 8338
This re-issued pattern from the 1930s explains why the Dress Doctors could sometimes tsk-tsk poor design in women’s clothing. We could debate all day about modesty versus prudishness, about sexual double standards, and other factors, historical and contemporary, in fashion’s display of women’s bodies. My critique of this pattern is the design is trying to hard.
As the pattern description states: “Gathers... create fullness in the bustline.” True, gathers have the obvious advantage of increasing bulk wherever they appear, whether at the bustline or the hipline. In various historical eras, when a particular kind of silhouette became the fashion, designers used gathers to allow women to create the illusion of more curves than they possessed.  But by outlining each breast with an obvious curve, the cut of this dress seems kind of desperate. As if the wearer is saying, Yes, I really do have breasts under here! Oh yes, I do! See? You can imagine more subtle cuts to the bodice that would create a similar silhouette. The other design details, Peter Pan collar, puffy shoulders and sleeves indicate this is a young woman’s dress, so why make her so self-conscious of her figure? I am seeing it from the point of view of the small-busted woman here, you may have noticed.
Of course, women’s evening wear has bared women’s flesh and form in obvious ways too, but this looks to be a day dress done up as it was in small patterns. And the suggestions for fabrics are crepes, linens and woolens with none of the fabrics usually recommended for evening. It looks to date to the late 1930s when the waistline was clearly defined and when hemlines were moving up to just below the knee where they would be frozen for the duration of World War II.

McCalls M7734
Tumblr media
I made everything in the pattern pack and took images. The pack consists of a plain tee, a polo shirt, a pair of shorts, trousers, a hoodie and a baseball cap and bag.
It's a pretty decent pattern pack - the shorts and trousers are basic and make a nice set. I had mine in the style of board shorts and then grey work trousers. I did add in a little pocket to the trousers as I had a scrap of black satin that was the right size.
Tumblr media
The little fake fly is really nice and makes for some nice interest if you plan on tucking in the tops, and if you have a small metal button these would also look nice in a denim as jeans.
The two tshirt options are really high necked - it's nice as it covers the dolls soft body totally, but can also look a little suffocating in the plain tee - although that might just be me and getting my seam allowances messed up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I shortened the sleeves and waist a little in the polo shirt to make it look a little more different from the other plain tee and I will 100% be using that option for the future as I think it looks really stinking cute - despite the fact the colour I picked made April look like she was working for UPS.
The shirt in this back is a winner in my books. I had this adorable remnant in my stash and if I had enough I'd make myself a version out of this too. The pattern calls for snaps and not real buttons but I figured if you were going to sew buttons on the thing you might as well put button holes on it too.
Tumblr media
April is wearing a pair of jeans I made her from the trouser pattern in this set, with a couple of modifications (nice deep pockets, coin pocket, back pockets, top stitching etc) and the shirt from this packet. Isn't the shirt super cute? I'd call this particular pattern a winner.
I had some issues with the hoodie. Firstly, the hood needs to be SO BIG to cover the dolls head and with all her hair it's just not practical - she's got a super high ponytail in so it doesn't cover up the collars of things she wears, and trying to find an open ended 8 inch zipper was a nightmare! I have the zip NOW, but at the time I ended up just photographing it without it on.
Tumblr media
I added a little collar and honestly... I think it looks like the cutest little bomber jacket for summer! it's got little pockets (very little) and fits really nice over other clothes - she's got a tee and the shirt on under this and it's still not too bulky.
The hat and bag... sigh.
I messed these up a bit and it's got nothing to do with the patterns. For some reason, the art of bag making is lost on me so much. I've honestly tried so often to make a bag and I fail every time. No idea why!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a couple of little books and comics for April to put in her bag, and that was that!
I highly rate this pattern and think with a few tiny alterations you could make a very varied looking wardrobe with this packet - the lack of 'boys' clothes and over saturation of dresses and skirts make this a really nice addition to anyones collection.
You could use some really nice alternative fabrics to really change the look of these items - like making jeans, swim shorts, or combats from the trousers, or a little leather bomber or jean jacket with a patch on the back out of the hoodie pattern. It might be really cool to combine them both and make one of those really popular jackets with the jean body and jersey sleeves.
If you have a boy doll, or just like a little variation in the patterns, i would pick this one up for sure.
Items needed: knits and woven fabric, thin elastic, velcro, interfacing, 7 buttons and an 8" open ended zipper. That should cover each item on the packet cover.
Here is April wearing everything in the packet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
April is an Our Generation Doll and has (mostly) the same measurements as a typical American Girl doll, although I think her movement is more limited as her joints are only back and forward, with no ball rotation. She's had no modifications or changes other than her hair being up in a high ponytail.
I am NOT a doll collector or an accomplished sewist, I do this for fun and mostly give the end results to the littles in my family.

Finished the McCall's M7734 pattern pack. April is wearing the t-shirt, shirt, hoodie, trousers and bag. The hat looks weird with her high ponytail. The bundle was good, and it was really nice to see more masculine outfits! Not everyone wants super girly girls and boys clothes are hard to find. I'd rate the pattern highly, as the only real issue I had was getting a 6inch separating zipper. The bag is terrible but that was my fault.
Overall I really enjoyed this pack and will definitely be making more of these super cute shirts in the future.
