My posts
Initially I wrote, “I ran my mouth about the Watcher streaming/paywall situation because I make bad decisions,” but I think the post has actually gone over well? In short, I want to see them succeed but I am also deeply fuckin’ baffled. I so desperately want the tea about what was really going on behind all this, and how the guys are reacting to it now, and I really hope they can turn this around somehow.
Side note, Friday was CHAOTIC.
Reblogs of interest
The Hot Vintage Lady Polls are escalating in round four. We got to a point where I posted propaganda for Ava Gardner AND Dorothy Dandridge in their matchup. Probably the biggest scandal of round three was Vivien Leigh getting knocked out, but she’s now High Chancellor of the Shadow Realm. The most contentious matchup this time seems to be Judy Garland vs Natalie Wood, which is nearly 50/50 as of this writing. But keep your eye on Hedy Lamarr, who may have Mifune Sweep energy.
(I think I love these brackets for the same reason I love Dracula Daily: it’s delightful that thousands of people on Tumblr actually have deeply-held opinions about things from many decades ago, and if they didn’t before, they do now.)

Hozier Watch 2024: “Why Would You Be Loved” has arrived on the Wasteland, Baby! special edition. I like this post about how that song is in conversation with “No Plan,” one of my favorites. (I wrote about “Movement” a while ago, but I could have fully inflicted an essay on you about how “No Plan” pulled me out of my six years of hiding from the internet. Anyway, it’s a great album from a few years ago, check it out if you haven’t.)
Generally I keep my mouth shut about Taylor Swift, but the new songs sure have some lyrics. I love Florence Welch, but I’m scared.

Silent Lucidity | Bucky Barnes x Reader
Hi! Shocking that this is yet another Taylor Swift fic. I've had these lyrics in my head for a bazillion years and finally figured out how I wanted to use them.
Warnings: Self Harm (kinda), anxiety, nightmares, blood, knives
"He seems fine most of the time, forcing smiles and neverminds. His laugh is a symphony, when the lights go out, it's hard to breathe. I pull at every thread, tryna solve the puzzles in his head, Live my life scared to death he'll decide to leave instead.
...
"If I was standin' there in your apartment, I'd take that bomb in your head and disarm it. I'd say I love you even at your darkest, And please don't go."
You put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ every night without fail.
The eight hours between falling asleep and waking to a blaring alarm were sacred. Precious. And you allowed no one to bother you with an unwanted call or a rogue text. Everyone and everything could wait until morning- well, not everyone.
Bucky’s calls and texts never went unanswered. Only Bucky’s name sat on your ‘favorites’ list. Only he could break through the ‘do not disturb’ wall and rouse you during the night. But he never called for irrelevant chit chat or texted memes at 2am. His communications during the silent, lonely time in the middle of the night were important. Sometimes dire. For everything else, he made himself wait till morning.
He didn’t like bothering you, hated waking you with one of his anxiety-driven phone calls. His heaving inhales and breathy voice always shook the sleep from your body. But his calls were never a bother- you'd stay on the phone with him all night if that's what he needed. After talking him down, you’d ask if you could drop by his apartment to check on him. And without fail, he’d reject your offer. He needed to learn to handle things on his own, he said. Needed to find a way to cope that didn’t drag you out of bed.
Back at the compound, your room sat only feet from his- you could hear him sobbing from your bed. Every night, you’d gently wake him and save him from his nightmares. And every night, he’d crawl into your arms. You held him close, as though you could protect him from the things inside his head. Eventually, you’d fall asleep. And nothing beat waking up next to him.
But nothing lasts. And Bucky wanted to strike out on his own. Or, not so much ‘wanted to’ as ‘had to’. Everyone on the team had moved out. Or died. Everyone except you and Bucky. That’s when the eviction notices came. SWORD took over the building almost overnight, and they “needed” every room. No exceptions.
The news launched you into action. After only a few hours, you found five two-bedroom listings in the city for excellent prices. And with the information in hand, you knocked at Bucky’s door. His room sat in a state of pristine order, his few belongings stacked in a small box. But when you presented your findings to him, he was all ‘that’s okays’ and ‘I’d rather nots’.
And it hurt you. Embarrassed you. Living in the same apartment seemed like the perfect next step. You could have your room and Bucky his. And when the monsters came calling in the middle of the night, all you’d have to do is rush across the hall.
But he said he wanted to figure things out for himself. Alone. And who were you to stop him?
But you worried about him- almost constantly. His apartment wasn’t warm or homey like yours. He didn’t furnish it much or make the space his own. It was cold. And sad. And mostly empty. Much like Bucky.
On a daily basis, you forbade yourself from begging him to move in. If he didn't want to live with you, if he wanted to try and make things work on his own, that was his business. But it didn't stop you from missing him. Maybe he didn't need you anymore- but you needed him.
Your buzzing phone woke you with a start, and you answered without even looking at the screen.
“Bucky? Hey, is everything okay?”
No response. Not a sound came from the other end of the line, not even his ragged breathing.
“Hello? Buck, talk to me.”
“I didn’t know what else to do…” he said. His voice was low and empty- it didn’t sound like him.
You flicked on the light and sat upright, too nervous to lie down any longer. “Are you okay?”
His words sounded inhuman, almost robotic. “I don’t know.”
“Can I come over?” you asked, knowing he’d say no.
But his response shocked you.
“Please.”
With that, you jumped out of bed. A pair of shorts sat crumpled on the floor near your dresser, a tshirt hung from your doorknob- you didn’t care that they didn’t match and weren’t clean. You just needed to get to Bucky.
“Okay, great, just stay on the phone with me,” you said, slipping into your sneakers. “Tell me what’s going on.”
“I’m bleeding.”
A pang of anxiety ripped through you as you searched for your keys, “You’re bleeding? Is it a lot?”
“I don’t know,” he said. No inflection. No emotion.
Your throat tightened. “Okay, just-” you did your best to sound calm, “I’m leaving right now. What happened?”
He paused. “I don’t remember.”
“Alright. Don’t hang up. I’m on my way- I’ll be there in a few minutes.” His apartment was fifteen minutes away during the day, but at 3:19am, you knew you could make it there in under ten.
“Okay.”
Why did he sound so hollow? And how was he so calm? He was never this calm after a nightmare.
“Just stay on the phone- don’t hang up till I get there.”
“Okay.”
He said he was bleeding- why was he bleeding? What could’ve happened in the safety of his empty apartment? Your chest ached. You ran every red light.
You listened to his even breathing on the other end of the line, as asking questions proved less than helpful. Every answer was “I don’t know” or “I can’t remember”. And worst case scenarios burned through your psyche. Was this Hydra related? Did Shuri’s work on his mind fail?
“Okay, I’m here-” you said as you threw your car in park. ”But don’t hang up. I’m outside. Give me two minutes.” The lobby sat empty, the front desk unmanned. But even if someone tried to stop you and get you to fill out a visitor pass, you’d break their jaw. The elevator was too slow for your liking on a good day, so you opted for the stairs. “I’m almost there,” you breathed, tired from dashing up four flights, “Don’t hang up.”
The key Bucky made you rested safely inside your fist, its sharp edges digging into your flesh. But you didn’t care. Tetanus was worth it. You thrust it into the deadbolt and threw open the door. Silence. Bucky’s apartment was dark. Quiet. Still.
“Buck?”
No answer.
“Bucky, where are you?” you said into the phone. All you got back was another “I don’t know.”
With wild energy, you flew through Bucky’s apartment. Turning on lights, calling his name. Every room sat empty and still- no signs of Bucky. But as you turned the corner you spotted a sliver of light spilling into the hallway. It beckoned you into the en suite bathroom, where you found Bucky.
A sharp gasp filled your lungs at the sight. He sat motionless on the floor, his back resting against the tub. He was seemingly catatonic, his trancelike stare boring through you- past you. His metal arm lay discarded next to him, its shiny surface dotted with red. And a familiar knife sat in his lap, its blade coated in blood. Countless knife wounds dug into what remained of his left shoulder. They were jagged. Deep. Frantic. Blood spilled from his flesh and dripped down his side, staining everything in its path. It formed a puddle on the floor. The grout didn’t stand a chance.
But amidst all the horror, Bucky still held the phone to his ear. Just like you asked.
“Buck?” you said, your voice gentle.
No response.
“Bucky. It’s me…” A bit more forceful.
Nothing.
You didn’t have time to wait for his answer- he was bleeding. He needed help. You grabbed a towel from his cabinet and made your way to kneel at his side, careful not to slip in the blood.
“I don’t know if you can hear me- but if this hurts, I’m really sorry.” You took a deep breath, and applied hard pressure to his wounds.
A horrible sound left his chest. Something between a gasp and a scream. He lurched in the opposite direction, pulling his wounded shoulder from your grasp.
“It’s okay! It’s okay, it’s just me. I tried talking to you but-”
Bucky didn’t let you finish. He leaned into you with full force, welcoming your presence. A sigh of relief left his chest and his weight fell against your body. He was desperate for you. Wherever he’d gone, wherever he’d gotten lost in his mind, your soul-affirming touch helped him find his way back. Your lips found his forehead and dotted kisses along his sweat-slick skin. You rested a hand in his hair, pulling his head into your chest.
“You’re okay, Buck,” you ran your fingers gently through his hair, “You’re okay.” But the continuous spilling of his blood contradicted your assurances. “I’m sorry, I don’t wanna hurt you, but I-”
He nodded.
Bucky winced when you replaced the towel on his shoulder. The raw wounds throbbed beneath your firm pressure and burned as the seconds passed. But he couldn’t find it in him to complain.
The two of you sat in silence as you stemmed the bleeding. The tile floor dug into your knees the longer you knelt by his side. Your hand ached from pressing into his shoulder. His blood stained your nails. And the warmth coating your hand as his blood seeped through the fabric ignited goosebumps across your skin.
You never liked this part of your relationship with Bucky. You liked being his source of comfort, of course. Liked taking care of him and making him feel safe. But seeing him so shaken, so deeply disturbed never got easier. And the blood. Not that you were squeamish or ever felt faint at the sight of his injuries. It was the knowing that he was in pain that cut you to your core.
“You doing okay?”
He nodded. And the bleeding stopped- mostly. But Bucky didn’t pay much mind to the status of his wounds. Instead, he focused on your hand running through his hair. The sound of your voice. The scent of your perfume lingering on the unwashed shirt you wore. And when the time came for you to clean up the massacre, he didn’t mind the pain. The sting of warm water rushing into his wounds didn’t bother him. Nor did he protest when you wrapped them in gauze. He was just happy to see you. Relieved to have you by his side.
Satisfied with the state of Bucky’s condition, you took a seat next to him. He leaned into you, paying no mind to the agony radiating from his shoulder- your warmth soothed the pain.
“You wanna tell me what that was about?” You hoped to coax him out of the silence. But his eyes remained downcast like a guilty child. “I’m not upset with you, Buck. I just wanna know what happened.”
Bucky wanted to know what happened, too. Rather, he wanted to understand. And explaining what he experienced seemed impossible- like when he’d tried to watch Inception. “Um, I don’t- I have nightmares, you know?” He turned to you with anxious eyes, almost as though he were asking permission to continue.
“I know.”
“Okay…” he said. “Have you ever heard of lucid dreaming?”
You ran through the catalog of random information and fun facts that resided in your brain. “Um, yeah. The thing where you’re asleep- and you realize that you’re dreaming? And then you can like, control the dream?”
Bucky’s right hand fiddled with the fabric of his sweatpants, pulling and stretching at it over and over. “Uh, yeah. Basically.” He took a shaky inhale, “ever since I moved in here, I’ve been having lucid nightmares- I guess that’s what you could call them. It’s like… I get dragged from cryo and into a reset or I find myself in full Winter Soldier gear on the brink of killing someone who doesn't deserve it. And then I realize. I realize that something’s- I don’t know, something feels off.”
His hand raked through his hair and pulled at the strands near the nape of his neck. You clocked a slight shiver shake his body. “I’m never one hundred percent sure that it’s a dream, though. It’s like- I’m in control, I can make my own choices. But it all feels too real. So then I wonder if…” He turned to you, “if this is the dream.”
He picked up the knife in his lap, it’s sticky, blood-slick blade sticking to the fabric of his sweats. It was the knife he always kept on his bedside table, the knife he’d once mistakenly brandished at you after a particularly bad night terror. “There's supposedly a few ways to tell if you're dreaming- they say you should try and count your fingers. But that doesn't work for me. I kept trying different things, but I... I realized that there’s only one way I can tell what’s a dream and what's real,” he said. “Pain.”
Of course. Nothing was ever nice or easy or comfortable for Bucky. Of course it was pain that helped him navigate his nightmares.
“If I get hurt in my dreams, I don’t feel any pain. And that’s how I know it’s not real. So my method is-” he cleared his throat. “It’s a little weird, I guess. I find whatever I can- usually one of my knives- and bury it in my chest. Or drag it across my neck. And if it doesn’t hurt, I know I’m dreaming. I can wake myself up.”
He watched your gaze twist from concern into horror. “Buck, I don’t- why not just prick your finger?”
He shrugged. The motion made him wince. “I tried,” he huffed. “Things like that are too small. It has to be deep. It has be bad.”
No words came to mind. No logical thoughts presented themselves to you. Just image after image of knives thrust into Bucky’s rib cage. Blades severing his jugular.
“I’m sorry…” he said, his voice low. Almost timid. “But it’s what works for me, you know?”
"What if you're not sure? What if you..." you shied away from the words, "what if you do that, but you're not dreaming? What if you're awake, and you-" You couldn't finish the sentence.
"That won't happen."
“Then what about tonight?” You eyed the pool of blood coagulating on the floor, the crimson stains under your nails. “I don’t- How did this happen, Buck?” It wasn’t anger that tainted your voice. Not judgment or disgust. Just worry. Fear for Buckys life.
“Well, tonight was… it was different,” he said. His eyes roamed the bandaged wounds you’d so gently cared for, the red smears that colored his chest. This was a disaster. “If I’m being honest, I don’t really know what happened. I was back there- I was with Zola. Right after the um… the train. I was on the table. And they were sawing off the rest of my arm.” He cleared his throat. You instinctively reached for his hand.
“And then, I had this metal in my body- I could feel it under my skin, grinding against my bones. And I realized. I realized that it didn’t seem real. I grabbed a scalpel from the tray next to the table and forced it into my shoulder. I wanted to see if I could…”
“If you could dig it out?”
He nodded. “And it didn’t hurt. But it didn’t wake me up, either. I was confused. So, I kept going. I didn’t know what I’d done until- this has never happened before. I’ve never actually hurt myself. Not in real life. But I woke up with a knife in my hand and a bloody mess in my bed. It scared me. And then…”
You swallowed the thick feeling in your throat. You forced it away. Without words, you offered to let Bucky lay in your lap. And he accepted- instantly. Resting in the safety of your body calmed the shaking in his hand. And finally, he took a deep breath. His lungs filled to max capacity before deflating completely, granting Bucky the peace he needed.
“And then I didn’t know what was real. I didn’t know which life was mine. None of it made any sense- I thought I’d maybe passed out on the operating table… and that this life was the dream. But no matter how many times I hurt myself, I still wasn’t sure. And I thought my process had failed.”
He paused for a moment, his tired eyes staring up at you. He took in the braid you wore, all messy from sleep. He smiled at the sheet marks still evident on your arm, the tired smile you shot his way. If this was, indeed, a dream- if he were to wake up on that operating table with Arnim Zola looming over him, he’d still be grateful for this respite. He’d be grateful for the warm, kind woman he’d escaped to in his darkest moment- the dreamy woman who lived in his head.
“So I decided to call you,” he said after a while. “I gave myself a new way to tell what was real- I told myself that if you showed up, this life was real.”
The needle of Bucky’s compass pointed straight to you. He steered his ship in your direction when the dark, choppy waters of his past lapped over the sides. And you rescued him every time. Like a lighthouse leading him to a safe shore.
Bucky forced himself to sit up, “But I know that’s not fair. I’m not trying to use you as my own personal wake up call, or anything. I just knew you’d show up for me if I needed you- and I needed you. So I called.” He sighed, “I know that’s not right- I didn't like doing it. And I know woke you. And I scared the hell out of you. And stained your shirt. I'm sorry... I was just scared- I felt kind of lost. It was this weird, hazy version of reality that I didn’t think I could trust. But I promise I won’t-”
“Buck, I asked you to live with me…” you said. “I wanted this-” you shook your head and gestured to the bloodbath, “not this. I wanted- I want to be there for you. I thought that if we lived together, I could help you with the nightmares. You know, like I used to.”
He nodded.
“You’re not using me. You can call me every night, and I’ll be here. But, I mean, we used to live across the hall from each other. If you needed me, I could be by your side in a heartbeat.” You picked at the dried blood outlining your cuticles, “I don’t like you being here alone- I don’t want you to deal with these things by yourself.” If this happened every night since the move, you knew Bucky had to be exhausted.
“I thought us sharing a place would be perfect. It would be just like our time at the compound- we’d see each other every day, I’d get to be there for you in the middle of the night…” You felt sheepish suddenly. Something resembling embarrassment quieted your voice. “I thought it would be good for you.”
“But it wouldn’t be good for you,” Bucky said.
You cocked your head to the side, confused.
“They told us to leave and you found those apartments- you were so excited to live in the city and have a place of your own. I didn’t want to mess up your new life.”
“Mess up my- Buck, I found those apartments for us.”
“I know. But I also know that you always wanted to live in the city. And I wanted you to live out your dream without burden. I wanted you to have fun and explore and live the life you wanted.”
“The life I wanted- and still want- is one with you.” You narrowed your eyes at him, “do you have any idea how much I miss you living two feet from me? My apartment is great and everything, but it’s just not the same without you. It doesn't feel like home.” Your expression softened. “I know you think you’re a huge bother and a burden, but I don’t see you that way. I’ve never seen you that way. I always want you around. And I always want to be there for you- in whatever way you need."
Bucky rested his hand on your knee. He missed you. Sure, he still saw you nearly everyday. But he missed your sleepy smile in the morning. The way your laugh echoed across the hall as you scrolled through Tik Tok. He knew deep down why his nightmares morphed into something so visceral, so terrifyingly mind-melting. It was you. Or the lack of you, rather. Without you across the hall or laying in bed next to him, his sense of safety vanished. He searched for you in the twisted world of his subconscious, but found only torment.
“If you want…” you said after a while, “I have plenty of space back at my place. You could move in with me.”
“Are you sure? I promise I’m fine here, and-”
You rolled your eyes and gestured to the bloody mess, “clearly, we have different definitions of ‘fine’”.
Bucky let out a labored laugh, “I mean, I can survive. I’ll live. You don’t have to do this.”
“But what if I want to?” You eyed him for a long moment. “I don’t want you to just ‘survive’, Buck. I want you to be comfortable. Happy. Why do you think I got a two bedroom?”
He fell silent.
“I hoped you’d change your mind- or that I could convince you. I wanted there to be room for you, just in case.” You told everyone that room would be for painting or a home gym or an office, but it was Bucky’s. From the moment you signed the lease, that room belonged to him. “Or you don’t have to sleep in the spare bedroom…” you said after a while. "You could just share mine. If you want.”
The words hung in the air.
Part of Bucky itched to reach for the knife once again. This couldn’t be real- this had to be a dream.
“I know what you’re thinking,” you said, taking his face in your hands. “But this isn’t a dream. None of that Hydra stuff is part of your reality anymore- you’re not going to wake up and see Zola or Pierce. You’re here. You’re safe. And I’m asking you to come live with me- I want you to come live with me.”
Bucky couldn’t say yes fast enough- he’d opted for a month-to-month lease for this very reason. He hated saying no to you all those months ago, hated rejecting your hard work searching for apartments. But he needed to give you a chance to enjoy life on your own. He needed to untangle you from his anchor. But here you were, covered in his blood in the middle of the night, asking him to share your bed.
“Woah, woah, where you think you’re goin’?” You watched Bucky struggle to his feet and lean against the counter for support.
“I wanted to…” he paused. Black and white flecks danced in his vision. The floor rocked beneath his feet. “I wanted to go home.”
Your heart swelled. Bucky belonged with you- home with you. And he wanted to get there as soon as possible. “Okay, well, it’s the middle of the night, Buck. And you’re hurt- you’ve lost a lot of blood.” You draped his arm over your shoulders and wrapped one of yours around his back, steadying him. “Let’s get you some rest, alright? And then in the morning, we can clean up your arm and get some of your stuff together to move. Sound good?”
He nodded with downcast eyes.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want you to be disappointed, but-”
“No, it’s not that…” he said. “My bed is- everything’s all bloody.” He couldn’t find it in him to look you in the eye or raise his voice above a murmur. It was always something with him. Always a problem or a complication or a hurdle that left him feeling less than.
But bloody sheets wouldn't stop you from getting Bucky the rest he needed. Before you ever ventured into his bed, the two of you shared pallets on the floor countless times. Back at the compound, you’d laid on the carpet beneath piles of blankets and “accidentally” fallen asleep. You'd tangled yourselves together, found solace in the other's warmth. And tonight provided you with the perfect opportunity for a throwback.
"Don't worry about it, okay? Hey-" You angled his face in your direction, "it's alright. I have an idea."
With Bucky’s body still leaning against yours, the two of you made your way to the living room. You sat him on the couch with stern words to "sit your ass down" and "don't move". Bucky watched as you found every spare blanket and pillow he owned and piled them on the carpet. He didn't like making you do all the work, but you forbade him from helping.
In no time at all, you built the perfect blanket cocoon on his living room floor. “We can take care of all the laundry in the morning,” you said. “But for now, you need to get some rest.”
Bucky made his way to the ground at a cautious pace with your hands hovering around him- just in case. He snaked beneath the blankets and pulled them back for you, inviting you in. It had been months since the two of you shared a bed- or, floor. And Bucky couldn’t believe he’d let himself miss out on living with you for all this time.
“You okay? Comfy?” you asked. “Need anything?”
“Yeah, I’m good, just…” He extended his hand and gave a gentle tug to your arm, “could you come closer?”
At his request, you pressed your body against his as though it would be the last time. Your head rested against his right shoulder, your breath fanning his skin. This was how things were supposed to be- you and Bucky, snuggled together, taking on the world as a team.
Bucky let his eyes flutter shut. Ever since he moved in, going to sleep was his least favorite part of the day. He feared the lonely dark, dreaded the hazy line between dreams and reality. And he hated his empty bed. He hated the absence of your warmth. The silence that should’ve been disturbed by your sleepy sounds. He missed the way you draped your body over his in the middle of the night.
This apartment was his, but it never felt like home. And when he woke each morning, it only reminded him of how much he missed you. How he wished your body occupied the space next to his.
He felt himself slipping into sleep, and for the first time since moving in, he didn’t resist. “Thank you…” he whispered, “for everything.”
You pressed a few light kisses to his skin. “Of course, Buck. Get some rest, okay?”
“Okay…” he sighed
"Goodnight, Buck"
“Goodnight. I’m so-” he yawned, “I’m so excited to go home.”

HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY GEDDY!!!!
Tumblr media
(meme credit to u/rtphokie on reddit)
OH, AND WHAT’S THAT?!?! IT’S ALSO THE 49th ANNIVERSARY OF NEIL PEART JOINING RUSH?!?!
In order to celebrate these wondrous occasions, I have compiled 70 reasons why I love Rush (especially Geddy):
70. They don't have any unlistenable albums. I can put on any Rush album and at the very least enjoy it, which is saying a lot!
69. ANDDDD they have 19 studio albums!!! 167 songs!!!
68. Alex's iconic Hall of Fame induction speech.
67. The movie I Love You, Man. The main plot of that is just two guys geeking out about Rush and then going to see them in concert.
66. The Bb5 in "Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage". For the record, the other famous Bb5 sung by a male singer in rock is the high note in "Bohemian Rhapsody", sung by Roger Taylor.
65. Geddy's range in general. Say what you will about his voice, but he had range.
64. Their pre-concert videos.
63. "Hey baby it's 7:45 and I need to go to bed soon, let's fuck"- In the Mood. The debut album was something else, man.
62. They wrote songs during soundcheck when they were on tour. This includes songs like "Tom Sawyer" and "Chemistry".
61. They went to a Yes concert while recording Caress of Steel, and almost quit making the album. I, for one, am very glad they didn't!
60. The "rap" in "Roll the Bones". Sit back, relax, get busy with the facts...
59. Gene Simmons thought they weren't into women because they didn't want to party with KISS. True story!
58. They listed their baseball positions in the liner notes for Signals.
57. Neil wrote lyrics to a song using only anagrams. The song is called "Anagram (For Mongo)", and is on the album Presto.
56. They thanked themselves in the liner notes for Hemispheres. Listed as Dirk, Lerxst, and Pratt, ofc!
55. They would challenge themselves to write last-minute songs. Results of this experiment include "Hand Over Fist" from Presto, and "Malignant Narcissism" from Snakes and Arrows.
54. The mere existence of "A Passage to Bangkok". I wonder what their thought process was to put a song about smoking weed around the world after a 20-minute long dystopian prog rock epic...
53. "La Villa Strangiato". Just... everything about it.
52. The kimonos. You know the ones!
Tumblr media
51. Their nicknames for each other!! (see above)
50. They had the second-longest stable line up in rock music! The only ones with a longer stable line up was ZZ Top.
49. They had a 40-year career! Even longer if you include pre-Neil and their adventures since the R40 tour.
48. The synth era. I unapologetically love 80s Rush, especially Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows.
47. "The Necromancer" basically being self-insert Tolkien fanfic. I wonder who the "three travelers" are supposed to be... OH WAIT!
46. They're giant nerds. All prog bands are, but they are especially nerdy.
45. Hugh Syme's awesome album covers. He did every single one from Caress of Steel onwards, barring the front cover for Snakes and Arrows.
44. The 7/8 section in "Tom Sawyer". That was my first intermediate bass line! Thanks, Geddy!
43. They're Canadian icons. Unironically, they're the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions "Canada" to me.
42. The horribly cheesy, terrible, but also really funny music video for "Time Stand Still". That song, btw, might be my favorite 80s Rush song, and is probably in my Top 5.
41. The triple-entendre pun of Moving Pictures. They're filming a movie (moving picture) of people moving paintings (moving pictures), while someone is getting moved by the scene (moving...pictures...).
40. They quote the 1812 Overture in the overture for "2112".
39. Geddy taught Les Claypool how to properly play "YYZ".
38. The Permanent Waves era glasses!
Tumblr media
37. The opening of "Xanadu".
36. The weird stuff Geddy would have on his side of stage after he stopped using amps. This includes rotisserie chickens, washing machines, dryers, and popcorn machines.
35. "Music by Lee and Lifeson, Lyrics by Peart" on almost every single Rush song.
34. The ending of "Spirit of Radio". OF SALESMEN!!!
33. Their inside jokes. Example: The Bag.
32. They took French classes together, and began announcing their songs in French in Quebec.
31. The progressiveness of Counterparts. What other 40-year old rockstars were talking about healthy relationship boundaries and openly supporting gay people in 1993?
30. Their vaults are practically empty because they scrapped songs that weren't up to their standards. This is why we have no sub-par Rush material!
29. Choosing to end their careers with grace.
28. Ending the last show of their career with "Working Man", the song that got everything started.
27. "Dreamline"--"Learning that we're only immortal / For a limited time".
26. Geddy and Alex inducting Yes into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
25. Then, of course, Geddy playing "Roundabout" with Yes during their induction! (Unfortunately, he did not play his Rickenbacker :( )
24. No decisions were made regarding the band without it being unanimous.
23. "Closer to the Heart". To me, that song is like a musical representation of their friendship, and it always leaves me with a warm, fuzzy feeling after listening to it.
22. Neil's books. Ghost Rider, in particular helped me get through a rough time earlier this year.
21. Geddy's Big Beautiful Book of Bass. I love that thing, and I am looking forward to his memoir in November!!!
20. That incredible Rickenbacker. I know it hasn't been his main bass since the early 80s but...
19. All their other creative projects. Geddy and Alex have a solo album each, Alex is involved with Envy of None rn, and Neil had his blog.
18. All their other stage interactions.
17. "ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION! WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL!" -"2112". Just... all of "2112".
16. They got me into prog. I wouldn't have this blog right now if it weren't for Rush.
15. The Lifeson chord. The F#7add11 voicing that you can hear in so many of their songs (it's the opening to "Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres").
14. Neil's drumming. They call him The Professor for a reason!
13. Geddy's bass playing. And his singing. And playing keys. And... yeah, we would be here all day!
12. The Dinner with Rush video. I make daily references to this that no one notices...
11. "The measure of a life / is a measure of love and respect"- "The Garden". The final song on their final album, and possibly the most amazing closer of all time.
10. Their charity work. IIRC, this includes giving away the aforementioned rotisserie chickens, as well as various fundraisers.
9. Their constant strive to improve themselves. Including Geddy working with a vocal coach, Neil working with Freddie Gruber, and of course, disavowing that Ayn Rand shit.
8. They give me something to strive towards, both as a musician and as a person. If I could make records half as good as Rush, and handle the fame with half the grace that they did, I would consider myself well-accomplished.
7. Neil's lyrics inspired me to get back into writing.
6. They inspired me to become a musician, and to pursue a career in music. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have stayed in choir or picked up bass, and I would've never considered a career in audio technology.
5. Their music helped me bond with my dad.
4. Geddy talking about his family's story of survival during the Holocaust. I think that's really important to talk about.
3. Other Rush fans. Well, okay, some of them like to brag about how many concerts they've been to, or tend to be a little gate-keep, but most of them are really chill people.
2. Their music helped me get through the toughest times in my life. Without getting too personal, I even credit them with saving my life on multiple occasions.
However, what I admire about Rush, above all else...
1. Their friendship with each other.
Once again, happy birthday Geddy! Your music has inspired me in so many ways, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it.

all my ttpd notes on each song before public opinion (overall opinion of the album at the end)
i didnt include tracks 1-6 bc ive posted about them already, but ill add them slowly by eod tomorrow most likely
fresh out the slammer
this is the track i was most excited for i think
oh title drop very early
fresh. out. the slammer. uhhh
i love the flow on all of the songs but i especially like this, its very fluid
FOR JUST ONE HOUR OF SUNSHINE!!!
in the shade of how he was feeling
the flow is very midnight rain i think
OOOH THE CHANGE AT 2:25 I LOVE THISSSSS
"im the girl of his american dreams" OMGGGG
i like the second half way better but the song is awesome
i think what im noticing about the album overall (so far) is it feels very empty production wise. its mostly her voice carrying it through but its hollow and i really think we need a more full production on this, or at least some parts of it. it feels uneven yk? or sort of unfinished, like she had the vocals and just slapped something behind it
florida!!!
VERY VERY EXCITED FOR THIS FLORENCE!!!!!!
and my friends all smell like weed or little babies.... ok.
okkkk less than a minute in and this is sooo anti-capitalist for a billionaire
FLORENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was so scared she'd be swept aside
"all my girls got their lace and their crimes"
so many mentions of a cheating husband on this album
"is that a bad thing to say in a song?" I LOOOOOVE MENTIONS OF THE MEDIA IN THAT MEDIA
FLORIDAAAA!! IS ONE HELL OF A DRuug..........
you can kind of here the thinness (??) of taylor's voice next to florence, the depth is lacking -- not necessarily bad, just something you can hear more with this track
some parts of it ("little did you know...") sound sort of like everybody wants to rule the world, idk if thats just me
guilty as sin
love the production this is so niceee
am i allowed to cry!
"oh what a way to dieeeee"
MESSY TOP LIP KISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
without ever touching his skin, how can i be guilty as sin............ is this about matty healy please
the quiet distorted "what?" in the bg is very bejeweled
my bedsheets are ablaze
the melody on this is lowkey kind of boring. theres points where i expect her to do something interesting with her voice and flick up or drop low or trill and it just doesnt happen. would be very cool if that was there
"long suffering propriety" that whole bridge is written well but sung so clunky? like it doesnt sound natural it sounds like syllable filler yk? and i know this bc i do it way too much KSJDCHIUHRFIUH
ending with am i allowed to cry, its very much an internal song. idk how to explain it but shes looking in, and when she says am i allowed to cry, shes looking up. <- what???
whos afraid of little old me?
ooooh it starts out so cunty
"my bare hands paved their paths"
you dont get to tell me about sad!
I LOVE THISSS its so mad woman its so rep coded
"i leap from the gallows and i levitate down your street" GREAT LYRIC HILARIOUS VISUAL ITS LIKE THAT HALLWAY MEME BUT WITH TAYLOR. hold on
Tumblr media
okay
WHOS AFRAID OF LITTLE OLD ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you should be <- ME TO MY MOM
production goes off cunty as fuck
"the scandal was contained" OMGG TELL ME TELL ME
you dont get to tell me you feel bad variant
BRIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think this is my favorite track i love it
"the circus life made me mean" ooooh very very interesting. i will analyze this song more fully later but not on this post
"tell me everything is not about me, what if it is?" OKAYYYYY
the way she sings "you should be" reminds of something on folklore/evermore but i cant think of what
shes very cool on this song. the emotion actually comes through.
"you wouldnt last an hour in the asylum where they raised me." oh okay! so like. have we considered not saying that.
i think that line turned me off the whole song KJSDCIUERFHIUEFH LIKE???? HELLO???????
i just. hm. very disappointed. you have one billion dollars. your parents put down the deposit for your career. ok.
the way she sings "wretched" and "narcotics" is what i wanted for more of the album. ykwim.
i will admit her screaming the title is veeeery very nice
"i am what i am cause you trained me" okkkk. im sorry taylor my bad!
idk how i feel about this song anymore. should i just ignore the lyrics and listen lmaoo
i can fix him (no i really i can)
okay i was waiting on this song but with the context of the rest of the album. idk. we'll see
okay IMMEDIATE ick.......... "the smoke cloud billows out his mouth like a freight train through a small town" okay taylor i guess rhymezone was in for her. idkkkkk
okay next line came in actually i spoke too soon it serves !!
this is very cowboy like me inverse
ughhh title drop already. see i wanted it cunty!!! why title it that when its so nothing. this is SO NOTHING
is this about matty healy. girl hes a neonazi you cant fix him
BRIDGE?????? i love when she shows off her kinks
okay. yeah this song was very nothing.
loml
the piano is very gentle on this and muted. i like it
is this aaron dessner? hold on lemme check
yes it is!!!
"never before and never since" looooove <3 <3 <3
"still alive, killing time at the cemetery, never quite buried in your suit and tie" LOOOOOOVE <3 <3 <3
this is very her relationship with religion methinks....
"about a million times" ala illicit affairs "a million little times"
"when your impressionist paintings of heaven turned out to be fakes" i think this is my favorite lyricism out of the album, its very natural its very clear its very real. i really really like it
A CONMAN SELLS A FOOL A GET LOVE QUICK SCHEME. GAGGED
some of it is very grieving that she didnt last with her first love, that she still has to work for it. but its also still feeling like a metaphor for religious beliefs and god, that she cant fully believe and she wishes she had unwavering faith
MR STEAL YO GIRL????????????
"talking rings and talking cradles"
i wish i could unrecall how we almost had it all
"SOMETHING COUNTERFEIT'S DEAD" GLITCH I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN YOU (lie)
"ill never leave. never mind"
the way this extends is very phoebe bridgers and the way she enunciates "loss of my life" is very her as well
okay donesies. i liked this one a lot.
i can do it with a broken heart
i like the glimmery production
lyrics again are flopping a little :/
"im a real tough kid, i can handle my shit" 😸 okay
GOTTA FAKE IT TIL I MAKE IT TIL I DID !!!
the lyrics are so over and so back so much its killing me. i cringe so hard i cry and then i gag just as hard
lights camera bitch smile even when i wanna die......................
"ALL THE PIECES OF ME SHATTERED WHILE THE CROWD WAS SCREAMING MORE" im so. im sooo sos so so feeling aout this.
whos counting in the background idk how i feel about it
"im so depressed i act like its my birthday everyday" ughhhhh!!! cunty but she didnt sing it right yk. idk.
production slays
"im so obsessed with him but he avoids me like the plague" we're back again. i told yall its over and back and over and back SOOOOOO MUCH
okay i think i like it
I CRY A LOT BUT I AM SO PRODUCTIVE! SOOOOOOOOOOOO ME
i wanted the whole album to be like that verse
im a real tough kid again :/ shhhh
"in stilettos for miles" eras im so so sorry girl
IM SO DEPRESSED I ACT LIKE ITS MY BIRTHDAY EVERY DAY IM SO OBSESSED WITH HIM BUT HE AVOIDS ME LIKE THE PLAGUE I CRY A LOT BUT I AM SO PRODUCTIVE ITS AN ART YOU KNOW YOURE GOOD WHEN YOU CAN EVEN DO IT WITH A BROKEN HEART! ! !
when she does "you know youre good!" and the laughing and everything ohhhh my god. IM SO MISERABLE! AND NO ONE KNOWS! dont try and come for my job OKAYYYYYYY SHE SERVED ON THIS
okay i think i really like this song. i just need a couple days lol
the smallest man who ever lived
veryyyyy excited for this. i think. a little.
"who the fuck was that guy" OKAYY!!!!!!!!
theres no lyric i was to write here but its all very good btw
she sounds like my english teacher vocally and its killing me KSJDCIUERHFIUERH
"in public showed me off then sank in stoned oblivion"
i cant figure out what shes saying "once your queen had come, you treat her like an ulcer and"??? alseran?? i cant understand it skdjfhieurhiuerg
you didnt measure up in any measure of a man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taylor date girls <3
the production is building here i like it is she gonna belt/scream
YEAHHHH BELTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"were you a sleeper cell spy in 50 years will all this be declassified and youll confess why you did it and ill say good riddance cause it wasnt sex [something something] and it wasnt forbidden" I REAAAAALLY LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i like when she makes up situations and puts herself in them
YOU CRASHED MY PARTY AND YOUR RENTAL CAR
you kicked out the stage lights but youre still performing.
"you are what you did" versus innocent's "who you are is not where you've been"
i like this track
the alchemy
I WAS SUPER EXCITED FOR THIS BUT NOW IDK HOW TO FEEL!!! idk im just jumping in
oh r&b production?? interesting....
ooh whats the rumbling thing i like that
shes returning to something but what...
TOUCHDOWN IS THIS KILLATRAV !!!!!!!!!!!!!! KILLATRAV KILLATRAV !!!!!!!!!!!
oh title drop but i wasnt listening KJSHCIUHEGFH
reference to maathp
is this returning to american boys KJIUFHEORUFHOERF???
oh this is sooooo referencing maathp
okay but it sounds like this person and her were already together and now theyre back "his heart....is still reserved for me" or maybe thats just trav holding on the friendship bracelet
i hate to say this but "wheres the trophy? he just comes running over to me" is very call it what you want + sweet nothing and another song i cant remember right now but yall know...... im sorry
im stupid as hell i cant hear what the line is where she says the alchemy
"he jokes that its heroine but this time with an e" THIS TIME??????
very much like this song. def not what i was expecting and im disappointed in that regard but its still a fun song
clara bow
nervous for this song. i like when she references people and places but theres a way to do it so i get scared every time
oooh ear ringing noise is very fun. i hope its not the whole time though
immediate title drop
oh so its not her? shes talking to someone else i think
oh this is in her past i think
lyrics are flopping.
"breath of fresh air through the smoke rings" like i can fix him (no really i can"
ohhh tambourine WAS stevie nicks reference
SORRY i dont like how she says eclipse lmaoo
i kind of dont vibe with all the small town references its as if she needs to remind us where she came from to be considered good like look how much i did when i came from nothing (even though she didnt)
YOU LOOK LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT IN THIS LIGHT !!!!
youve got edge, she never did girlllllllllll
so does she consider herself the "replacement" for clara bow?
song is okay i think it might grow on me. i think the biggest disappointment on this album is how predictable it all feels sonically.
the black dog
bonus track!! this is the only one i have so i might add the others later but tbh i might wait bc i dont know how much i. care.
muted pianooooo i love muted piano<333
YOU SHARED YOUR LOCATION AND FORGOT TO TURN IT OFF
oh the black dog is a bar. im kind of. okay. okay
"shes too young to know this song" is a nice line but its clunky how its sung
old habits die screaming!
girl your longing does NAWT stay unspoken
folklore when she used "big" words it felt natural (for the most part). here it feels performative? like it doesnt FIT naturally
"was it hazing for a cruel fraternity i pledged" idk how to feel about this!
lots and lots of smoke references!
"six weeks of breathing clean air" -> CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!
two times she says she wants to burn her clothes on this album
i like the production im literally kind of ignoring the lyrics
omg never mind "tail between your legs youre leaving"
personal ick but i hate when songs cut off in a word. she goes "old habits die screeeeeam-" and nothing. JUST SAY THE -ING
okay cool. mid song but i hope the swifties who thought it was about depression and got the variant are feeling okay<33
overall: idk about this album. i went in really excited and so maybe thats why i feel so let down... but i feel so let down. this isnt what was marketed, this isnt anything even real for a lot of it. she's all over the place and i dont think its a tight and solid album -- although monetarily it will obviously look like one. there are moments where we get something very her and very real and i think those moments save the album. the production is also a little all over the place, and so very nothing. im not asking her to do anything fresh or new but why would you market it as if it was and not deliver?
i liked florida!!!, loml, and i can do it with a broken heart -- i think clara bow, the alchemy, and some others (you can tell with my notes LOL) will grow on me. and the tortured poets department and my boy only breaks his favorite toys were good songs, but i think i need a few days to actually acknowledge them as such.
also i think lyrically shes done a few very interesting things. it almost feels like debut with how specific it is and the name dropping and everything -- however it is new/rusty for her so that also kind of hurts her overall. i think maybe this is like good practice for a more evolved narrative lyricism in the future, bc her past mo of hazy visuals and thinly connected moments to string into a narrative just doesnt work anymore.
i will say. she did make me experience all 5 stages of grief plus some fun extras. maybe not in the way she wanted, but i did anyway ! its a fun album and i def think ill like it more as time goes on, but this is my opinion without outside influence and within the first day of listening -- i want to see how that changes! im also holding off on album rankings until a week or two passes

Superlatives of my Stories: 2023 Edition
I stole this meme from @petralemaitre
Leitmotif of the year: You get to be a survivor of sexual assault! You get to be a survivor of sexual assault! You get an OT3 and a Found Family! Or ‘that is yours, I am not’ across multiple fandoms.
My best story of this year: I think probably There’s Blood (On The Side Of The Mountain) which is the West Wing ‘CJ was kidnapped not Zoey’ AU, written from the POV of an outsider OC - it unfurled exactly how I wanted it to - an atmosphere of ambiguity as to what happened, what’s happening and what’s going to - also very narrowly focused.
My favorite and/or truest story of this year: My absolutely favourite thing I wrote was a tie between two Grishaverse stories - a Hunger Games AU and Get Wrecked Tante Heleen (tm) - Never Again (It’s Not An Act Of Love) & Karma (Is My Family)
They are both stories about found families, about how the narratives of those who abuse and hurt you aren’t true, about love as partnership - all kinds of love as well, about the gift of choice. Also stabbing some fuckers.
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I think they’ve all been incredibly appreciated considering - actually possibly uneasy (with the semi divine) which is about Rings of Power Gil-galad and his attitude towards Elronds biracial identity which wasn’t not me as a biracial person having Feelings about it.
I would also always always love more comments on the Tudors OT3 Verse. More content in the OT3 verse in general but I understand it’s niche content.
Most fun story to write: Every single bit of You Belong With Us which was an absolute joy - there was so much love and trust and happiness (and then an undertone of sadness at not being able to express that love openly that I hope came through as well)
Story with the single sexiest moment: For me personally it’s House This Love (Of Ours)
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Did I write Scarlet Pimpernel OT4 fic with a definite villain Chauvelin who is in love with both Blakeneys? Yes. Did I also manage to write (fictional versions) of Robert Dudley/Elizabeth I knife kink fic? Also yes. I maintain both of those are fine ;).
The Thomas Cromwell/Anne Boleyn/Henry VIII Harem AU is the most Dead Dove Do Not Eat in all honesty - I was having a lot of very personal trauma feelings in that one.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I wrote the Bartlet Daughters in I Tried To Rewrite It (But I Can’t) and I think that really made me think about both Ellie and Elizabeth Bartlet in a way I never had before - even though it’s obviously an AU verse it got me to recognise things about them and about the way they approach their parents high profile in very different ways.
Hardest story to write: It could have been the Knife Kink fic (because kink (all kink) is a giant personal trigger for me) but I think it might actually have been the OT3 verse fic because there’s so much thought and preparation that went into it - though the actual writing of the story isn’t actually the hard part.
Biggest disappointment: have not in fact written more of Crown Of Ashes, the Tudors OT3 Verse AU AU of ‘what happens when Mary Tudor gets everything she thinks she wanted and it turns out it absolutely sucks and turns to ashes for her’
Biggest surprise: Did not expect to be writing knife kink and also did not expect to fall headfirst back into writing West Wing fic but for the latter I have to credit the lovely Discord People and also @miabicicletta in particular.
Most unintentionally telling story: It is almost certainly In Our Bedroom (After The War) or the giant Grishaverse Cuddle Pile ficlet.
Best title: Only Wore This Doublet (So You Could Take It Off) is the aforementioned Elizabeth I/Robert Dudley knife kink fic and honestly I am so proud of that title. A+ use of Taylor Swift lyric.
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to: The Sam/Donna/Josh fic told in social media posts.

Top 5 songs you associate with Poe and top 5 songs you associate with Marc 😊
Oh bless, I love me some music themed questions, thanks Chrissie! As we go into this I would like to state that I......do not control the music associations my brain makes lol.
Songs I Associate With Poe:
Holding Out For A Hero by Bonnie Tyler. Yes...I am a gayass. This has been well established, but it really does fit him imo. I mean... it just does. One day maybe I'll get up the nerve to finally edit him to it. gif or otherwise.
Come and Get Your Love by Redbone (the album version). This one's entirely @leiakenobi's fault with her delightful Damerey fic, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. The association of Poe dorkily dancing to it with Rey is forever going to be in my brain.
Kerosene Dreams by X Ambassadors. This one's @hermitmoss's doing, but it's one of my favorite songs, and it just...sounds like Poe. Specifically, it's a Poe and the Resistance song, as much as it is just a Poe song to me. I feel like it fits his relationship with the Resistance extremely well.
Children of the Sky by Imagine Dragons. Speaking of songs that just sound like Poe to me...when I first heard this song boy did I get hit with emotions, both for me and then later for Poe because...yeah. Yeah that's him alright.
About Love by Marina. I almost went with Little Black Submarines for this, but I wanted something a little lighter. I associate About Love with Poe mostly because it was one of the first songs I began associating with my canon/oc pairing for him, and some of the lyrics wound up being the title for the first ever fic I published of them. So, it just gives me soft and fuzzy feelings.
Songs I Associate With Marc:
Style by Taylor Swift. No, I do not know why. Well actually, that's a lie - I do know why. I saw a tiktok vid of him and Layla to this song, right around the time Moon Knight was first airing and....well now the association is stuck in my brain? So. Yee.
Cairo by San Fermin. I mean...yeah.
Night Crawling by Miley Cyrus and Billy Idol. Honestly, I associated this one so hard with Marc, that I ended up making a little vidlet of him to it.
Dreams by the Cranberries. There's this ambience thing on Spotify for Marc that I listened to a couple of times, and this song plays in the bg, so now it's a Marc song to me. [smacks the top of the song] this bad boy can fit so many of my blorbos in it (went from being an 11 song to a Poe song to a Marc song).
......Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) by Abba. Look... I said I don't control the brain associations, and I meant it. I legitimately have no good reason for it!!! No vids no memes, nothing. But at some point, I started associating it with him, I'm guessing because of the whole midnight thing? Marc would absolutely hate that I associate it with him, probably, which...makes it so much funnier than it already is.
Ask me my top five anything!

I need more music to listen, so unleash your reccomendations
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh dear I never get to talk about music enough so pardon me if I explode all over you
(Links are to songs that are both faves and good places for a newcomer to start.)
Taylor Swift - Yeah yeah she's a household name but no kidding, she has 10 albums spanning several genres and I can guarantee you that she has at least some songs that you will permanently add to your rotation. Google around for a good place to start and dive in (...or just ask me because I will gladly help you out).
Taemin - He's been known as 'the Michael Jackson of kpop' for years now, but what's wild is that he started at Michael and has since grown into a dancer and performer all his own. The only kpop artist I fully stan. His singles never. ever. miss.
Delta Rae - Incredible folk/country/Americana band from the state I live in with male and female vocalists. They are criminally underrated because they were liberal country artists before that was even remotely possible. Seen them live twice, met them twice, they are the most genuine people and outstanding artists.
Amanda Palmer - Originated as The Dresden Dolls, a duo that invented the 'punk cabaret' indie subgenre, and has been a solo artist for like 15 years at this point? Intense piano, intense lyrics, intense everything (the linked song is the anthem for girls with daddy issues). Objectively the most personal lyrics I've ever heard. Voice may take a second to adjust to. Not made for mainstream and doesn't want to be. One of the most important artists to me, personally.
Marianas Trench - Pop/punk perfection (but also simply genre chameleons) with a musical mastermind at its core. One of the best vocalists. Most albums end with an opus arrangement of the songs that came before and it's life changing.
Pink - People don't realize how powerful her vocals are and how incredible her lyricism can be. A pop icon. This bitch raised me, forever grateful.
Halsey - If all you know is Without Me and Closer, you haven't heard Halsey. Every album is outstanding but hopeless fountain kingdom doesn't have a single misplaced sound. It's pretty freakish actually.
Chvrches - Sheer and utter synthpop perfection, every single song. The one I linked is one of my favorite songs of all time, period.
MUNA - Queer girls making queer indie pop. Great lyrics, immaculate vibes. Recently opened for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour, and well deserved.
The Midnight - 80s/90s synth like you can't even believe. Saxophone for days.
Imogen Heap - A genius and pop legend. Her greatest song was sampled in something god awful and got meme-d to death, I don't wanna talk about it. If a pop artist does breathy vocals, 95% chance they're doing it because of Imogen. She sang me happy birthday. Haven't been alive since.
Rina Sawayama - THIS BITCH. Falls under pop but never met a genre she couldn't master. Stayed in the game into her late twenties (which is geriatric by pop standards), when she finally blew up a bit. A variety of sounds, some of them strange, but all of them brilliant in one way or another (even if you don't personally vibe with it).
Troye Sivan - Twink icon whose first two albums were as gay as they were pop brilliance. I don't care much for his newest work, but you might.
Alice Merton - She's the girl with that Roots song from a few years back. Two albums now, both genius. Unique voice, varied sound but with a distinct Florence oomph to it.
Ava Max - UN. DER. RATE. D. Classic, anthemic pop. Vocals for DAYS. Music so infectious you have it on loop for days. So much more than Sweet but Psycho.
Kesha - I prefer recent Kesha to her classic dance pop madness, personally. She grew into an amazing artist who can blend her weird ass dance flavor with her more mature sounds in a way that doesn't really seem possible.
Bishop Briggs - Nobody has a voice like this. A sort pop/alternative vibe that can be anthemic as easily as it can be dark.
The Chicks - Icons for a reason. Their most recent album, written by the main lyricist after leaving her husband of 20 years for cheating on her left right and sideways, is one of the best break up albums of all time. Period.
The Civil Wars - They only lasted long enough to make two albums, but both are flawless. Nobody will ever harmonize quite like them. Folk/country in the most *beautiful* way possible.
Evanescence - 2000s rock with with a stunning female writer and vocalist whose melodies are simply beyond compare when we're talking about their stuff from 2003-2006. Goth, dramatic, hard hitting, cathartic.
Freya Ridings - Adele but make it a touch more contemporary. Gorgeous deep voice, lots of ballads but her up tempo stuff is just as good.
Billie Eilish - If you haven't heard her first album yet or her early EPs, you need to. Nobody that young should have that much of a grasp of music and her place in it.
Foxes - Underrated pop queen! I have yet to hear a bad song from her, but her latest album is quintessential synthpop mastery.
Jukebox the Ghost - Piano pop/rock. It's actually too much fun to listen to them, tbh.
Kelly Clarkson - Listen, her latest album follows directly after The Chicks' on the string of ultimate divorce albums we've gotten from pop icons lately. I've loved Kelly forever, but in bits and pieces. Her latest album is her strongest project to date, easily.
Labrinth - I do not comprehend what this genius does with music. Electronic, experimental, metaphorical, personal, just something else. Did the music for Euphoria, but his first solo album was an experience and a half.
Lorde - Everybody tells you to listen to Melodrama because you should.
Maisie Peters - Everybody calls everybody else 'the next Taylor Swift,' and they're wrong. It's this girl.
Marina and the Diamonds - SUCH a unique voice, lyrics that are way too smart for mainstream pop.
Patrick Wolfe - A deep-voiced violinist who released a pop album in 2011 that I still listen to because I'm a sucker for pop laced with classical instruments and it's just that good.
Owen Pallett - A higher-toned violinist with more of an indie approach, coming up with concepts and melodies that would go well with an A24 film.
Emilie Autumn - Violin-fueled industrial/pop/metal, often with Victorian leanings. Visceral lyrics on mental illness, depression, bipolar, suicidal ideation, sexual assault, sometimes with a satirical bent or through a historical lens. Voice might take a second to get used to, it's unique and she does unique things with it (including "ugly" sounds on purpose) but once it clicks it clicks hard. Opheliac and Fight Like A Girl are good starting places.
The Veronicas - Underrated (yet oddly influential?) pop icon twins from the early 2000s to now. Killer voices, KILLER pop.

i love your polls so much omg they make my day
IM SORRY IM ALL OVER THE TAG. I have literally spent the entire weekend in a fevered state of complete delirium.
I love thinking up weird scenarios and forcing people to make decisions. It's an addiction.
I'm like Jigsaw.
These polls are my traps.
But anyway. New poll idea.

feburary song recs!
this month was also CRAZY. first few days of the month were incredibly sinusoidal. i got really close with some friends, because some friends were being incredibly distant. almost threw up from disgust/stress at one point lol. but it worked out fine and the middle of the month was really fun. it reassured me that things were going to be okay. unfortunately things aren't always perfect so that doubt and mistrust keeps creeping up on me, but to be honest i don't really care much anymore. is it alright to let some things fade away?
--- newton dance - nayutalien x chinozo
okay so i heard this ruinene cover- from project sekai: a new voice, i think- on youtube and it's so cool. the voices fit so well (BOTH OF THEM) and the song is perfect for them and so cute. i love the theme of sciencey space love songs nayutalien does. it's SO CUTE. "can't fight your pull of gravity!" is so sweet. the tuning style makes it even more cuter. dfnisdfjnasdjfnadk. and nayutalien has a way of writing songs that scratch that itch in my brain- maybe it's the harmonic minor lol.
--- speak now - taylor swift
listen. i don't listen to pop. i don't like pop. i hate taylor swift. however. however. i love the story this songs tells. it's such a stereotypical straight story, I KNOW. but who doesn't love a stereotypical sort of sweet love story once in a while. the instrumentation is simple yet unique (for pop lol). the way she structures the chorus is different from other songs i've seen.
--- kosho yashiki satsujin jiken - teniwoha
otherwise known as "murder case at the mansion of antiquarian books". I LOVE SONGS THAT TELL A STORY (can you tell??) ESPECIALLY. MURDER. CASES. THAT. IS. SO COOL. sadly the lyrics are hard to understand but i still love it anyways. i especially love the wonderlands x showtime cover because the "sho" and "lie" parts are emphasized when you have several different voices, in different octaves, with different timbres. I LOVE EMU'S VOICE IN THIS. her cutesy voice is mixed with her lower register and it sounds GREAT. this is one of the (few) songs that work with her very cutesy childish voice. the line distribution makes this song so delicious. and oh my god. EVERY CHORUS. PUSHES. DOWN. A HALF STEP. THAT. IS SO COOL. it keeps dropping when you expect it to end or go higher. SADFNAISDUFNAISUDFIU. teniwoha, thank you.
--- sobakasu - judy and mary
ANOTHER recommendation from a friend. took some time to grow on me. what i find interesting is how the verses and instrumental breaks sound very different (pop vs. rock). my favorite part of this song is how raw and genuine it sounds. it's so catchy i hear myself humming this throughout the day. it's really just a sweet song (about love i think... something like love is like a freckle you can't get rid of ...?). the chorus loops in my mind. the way the singer sings it is so aosdfnasdfnjasdj. makes me smile.
--- new rules - dua lipa
okay i swear i don't like pop. i swear. i just heard it in my dance team's playlist and was like "wow i hate how much they play this song" then proceeded to loop it. i'm NOT going to say it's relatable. i'm not.
--- this is how to be in love with you/umbilical in milgram project
mahiru's cv works so well in this song. and i love the es cv cover too. this song itself is so sweet and makes you feel very warm and fuzzy though it's a little sinister lol. like... this is HOW TO BE IN LOVE WITH YOU?? what an awesome title. i really love the line that goes "if you're kind to me, i'm going to start relying on you, so thanks" or something. it's just such a fun vibe. i love when she sings "o-ver-heat" and "AI NAN DESU YO".
it's getting late so i will just say: yuno is relatable. let's reload the warmth y'all. light the oxygen on fire. or something. "i hope i can be someone you like."
honorary mentions: ke mu san (this meme song SLAPS my #1 listened to lol. the dance is addicting to watch)

What Taylor swift album do you think each of the ninja are? I feel like Jay could be Lover. Maybe 1989 for Skylor. What do you think?
As someone who has been casually listening to Taylor since before Ninjago came out thanks to my oldest sister and became an actual Swiftie in 2017 with the release of Reputation (not being able to use that verified ticketmaster fan slip that came with my cd because Christmas was a month after it expired and my mom had no idea it was in there is my ACTUAL roman empire), I have thought about this a lot.
A couple of these ARE interchangeable (Lloyd, you are an enigma to me) but this is USUALLY what I end up falling on.
The Tortured Poet's Department: I know it's not out yet, but based on the vibes, the few lyrics we've seen, the fact that it's probably going to be in the vein of folklore and evermore and the whole message of the album (finally being free after years and years trapped and unhappy), I really think it's going to fit Misako. POSSIBLY Garmadon, but that's my prediction and I'm fully prepared to eat my words.
Midnights: This is one of my top 3 albums (it and Speak Now are constantly fighting for that number 3 spot) and because of how it encapsulates all of the eras/it being about things that she wanted to elaborate on from her past, I feel like it fits all of the characters to an extent. That being said, it feels very Wu coded to me (even if YOYOK is THE Cole song at the end of the day)
evermore/folklore: because evermore are the songs that kept coming from Taylor after folklore, I consider them very similar in tone/vibe and therefore are grouping them as one. folklore is my favorite Taylor album to date and it means so much to me as both a person and as a writer (I can only hope to write something as meaningful as My Tears Ricochet) and these albums are the Nya albums. I know that's unpopular, people tend to see her as Reputation or Speak Now and I fully understand those comparisons but these albums not only have the infamous love triangle saga between Betty and August fighting over James, as well as Mad Woman, The Last Great American Dynasty and No Body, No Crime which are some of my favorite songs about female rage but those albums are so vulnerable in a way that the others aren't.
Lover; oh Lover, the album that people see as the silly, happy, fun album but if they scratch under the surface find the deeper meaning about being scared of losing the one person that is your true love in The Archer, Afterglow and Cornelia Street. This is the first album that I managed to decide what character from Ninjago it fit and that is Jay Walker, my beloved.
Reputation: This album has the baddest bitch anthem in I Did Something Bad but this album also has some of the sweetest love songs I've ever heard in my life. It's so Skylor, everybody. You cannot tell me "I want to wear his initial on a chain around my neck/not because he owns me but because he really knows me" is not Kailor coded.
1989: this album is the Cole album, I take no notes on that one.
Red: NO, I'M NOT MAKING THAT COMPARISON. Red is NOT the Kai album, this is arguably the SADDEST album in Taylor's discography and despite his color being Red, that doesn't mean Kai fits Red! Now that I have THAT out of the way (sorry, TikTok pisses me off with that comparison), Red is the Lloyd album. Yes, it has those few happy moments (Starlight, State of Grace, Treacherous) but most of the album is CLOUDED by this heartbreak from All Too Well, Forever Winter, The Moment I Knew. And The Lucky One is so, so, so Lloyd & Arin coded.
Speak Now: *throws Harumi at you and runs away to grab Garmadon as well before sprinting out of the room to avoid getting asked questions while yelling* I can't pick, sorry!
Fearless; this album is so Kai coded, you cannot tell me otherwise. I can't tell you WHY it is that way, but it is (despite my anger about the "Kai is Red coded" meme, I am willing to switch Lloyd and Kai if someone can prove it to me.)
And finally, Taylor Swift/Debut: I will admit, I HARDLY listen to this album. I'll probably grow a deeper love/understanding for it when the rerecording comes out but as of now, it's my LEAST listened to album of hers but from the songs I do listen to (Our Song, Tied Together With a Smile and A Place In This World) It really does give me Zane vibes (although I also think it gives PIXAL vibes because those two are really parallels of each other) but, I don't listen to the full album so I'm willing to change my mind.
Anyway, this got very long but I have a lot of opinions on both Ninjago and Taylor's music so you DID kinda ask for it, anon.

Music Headcanons
-Octonauts-
Barnacles: It’s canon he listens to Nicki Minaj (imagining someone like Barnacles listening to songs like “Anaconda” is so strange XD), but I feel he also listens to Fin Argus, and at times, Poor Man’s Poison. Oh, and he probably listens to Megan Thee Stallion songs, just saying. He also enjoys the musical Little Shop of Horrors (the song “Feed Me (Git it!)”) Kwazzi: Sea Shanties, and maybe some of the songs made by Miracleofsound (on YouTube). I also feel like he’d listen to vocal covers of most viking songs, more specifically, covers and songs by Peyton Parrish. But, when they’re not listening to that, it’s likely songs by Disturbed and Starkid musicals.
Peso: Mainly Spanish songs that he had grown up with (listened to Despacito once and died inside). I would also say he listens to generic pop songs, maybe older Justin Bieber songs- not for the lyrics, just to listen to the background music. And he probably likes songs that have xylophone solos.
Shellington: The Crane Wives all the way (loves the instrumentals and their voices), he also enjoys bands like Gang of Youths, and creators like J. Maya, and Gareth Fernandez. But, he also enjoys songs from some musicals (including 1776; The New Musical [his favorite being “He Plays the Violin”]).
Dashi: Also listens to Nicki Minaj (mainly with Barnacles). She also listens to Lizzo (Truth Hurts and About Damn Time is some of her favorites), Adelle (solely because of the memes), and Cody Fry (she enjoys the orchestra compositions of most their songs). But they also enjoy songs from Adventure Time and Steven Universe.
Inkling: Classical all the way. He is a very novelty person, so I can see him being fond of Mozart, Beethoven, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (composer of Swan Lake), Bach, and Chopin.
Tweak: She loves heavy metal bands. She prefers Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, and Pantera. And maybe some other rock bands like AC/DC (Hell’s Bells, Back in Black, and Thunderstruck), Disturbed, and Skillet. She also likes older country songs (probably Josh Turner and Luke Bryan). Oh! And Taylor Swift.
Vegimals: They don’t have preferred bands, they like A cappella.
---
-Octo-Agents-
Calico Jack: Sea Shanties that he made up and sang to himself (literally forgets now that he can’t look them up because he made them).
Ranger Marsh: Country. Like along the lines of old country classics, but he also listens to Pantera, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and AC/DC (and he had introduced Tweak to the bands when she was little). He enjoys Poor Man’s Poison (after Barnacles introduced the band to him).
Paani: He loves Minecraft Music (in the game and fan-made parodies/original songs). His favorite disc in-game is Otherside, his favorite Minecraft song artist is Captain Sparkles (though a close second would be SlamACow), his favorite song by Captain Sparkles is Take Back the Night. Oh- and he likes Animaniacs songs.
Ryla: Not a huge music fan, prefers to listen to natural ambience (rain, birds, and wind).
Min: Cavetown songs are some of her favorites, as well as mxmtoon. Softer songs with nice background music. She may also like The Crane Wives (she’ll listen to them when hanging out with Shellington).
Natquik: Classical. Songs that have vocal points distract him a lot, and he can’t really get much done. He enjoys songs from Beethoven, Debussy, and Vivaldi.
Tracker: Whatever is playing on the radio. They have no music taste whatsoever, but they have memorized various generic pop songs that are played on the radio.
Pearl: She likes songs from Disney Movies, and songs like: “Tamino” by Persephone. “Touch The Sky” from Disney’s Merida is her favorite (she relates to it a lot).
---
-Junior Agents-
Pinto: Cocomelon songs, Justin Bieber, and One Direction.
Koshi: She likes songs from PIxar and Disney (she prefers songs from Frozen). She also enjoys detective medleys (Detective Sisters and Shellington).
---
I know a lot of random bands/composers and I’m only now realizing it.

Most-Listened of December 2023
(via stats.fm/spotistats)
This was finals month, and a particularly rough set of finals, too. But I always tend to enjoy music as a whole more in December, as everyone takes time to appreciate their favorite songs of the year! So, though there weren't a whole lot of new releases, this was a great listening month for me, hence all the five-star songs :)
[last month]
1. The Very First Night -- Taylor Swift
This is an exuberantly painful song--just how happy Taylor Swift sounds, as she dreams of the impossible, breaks my heart and then brings me back for yet another listen.
2. Elevarte Caer -- Xoel López, Repion
This song is so powerful, hit after hit after hit of melody. The headbanging goes WILD whenever this one comes on.
3. Pierre -- Ryn Weaver
Soundtrack to my (requisite) finals breakdown, and WOW is it catchy. The bittersweet feeling chokes me up every single listen!
4. Closer -- The Chainsmokers, Halsey
Of all the songs Todd in the Shadows has featured on his yearly best lists, I don't know why THIS is the one that has made my own monthly list twice. But here we are!
5. Like I Can -- Sam Smith
Sam Smith angst is something special. I still like "Stay With Me" more, but "Like I Can" has the bite I needed this month.
6. Lean On -- Bely Basarte
I got really sick around Christmas, and Bely Basarte's soft covers of songs from my childhood helped comfort me through it :)
7. Numb Little Bug -- Em Beihold
Thanks @embroselu for the rec! When the instrumental go CRASH I go SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (the texture is fantastic we love it)
8. Blame Brett -- The Beaches
This one is so much fun!! It brings pop euphoria to rock music just as excellently as my favorite Yena tracks!
9. Favorite Crime -- Olivia Rodrigo
Yeah, none of the GUTS ballads have managed to match this one, or "1 step forward, 3 steps back", for me.
10. Temporary Fix -- Dirty Blond
This is exactly what winter gloom feels like.
11. Una Sonrisa -- Repion
I've taken this on as sort of personal theme song, I love it so much!! AL FINAL, TE CANTARÉ, PARA SI SENTIRME BIEN <3 AL FINAL, TE CANTARÉ, PORQUE ME HACE BIEN A MIIIIIIIIIII PORQUE ME HACE BIEN A MIIIIIIIIIIIIIII <3
12. Royal -- IVE
This song is fine, I don't mind it! I left it on repeat while speedrunning a final essay, and apparently that was enough repeats to get it on this list--I don't think I've listened to it in any other context.
13. Heavy Lashes -- Ichiko Aoba
Accidentally clicked on this while looking for "Heavy" by Linkin Park & Kiiara--no regrets! It's mysterious but also tender, a ballad that's full of surprises. One listen, and I knew it was going to be on the five-star songs list.
14. Piklu's Vacation Dream -- Abeer Khandker
Every list needs a random meme song! Thanks to Pinely on YouTube for bringing this song into my world <3
15. All-American Bitch -- Olivia Rodrigo
Me when Olivia Rodrigo lyrics...
Five-Star Songs This Month:
BIBI Vengeance -- Bibi (i didn't realize how great this one is until it showed up on my spotify wrapped top 100 this year. bibi & the song work SO well together, it's captivating!! and there has to be something in that chorus, because its shock value still hasn't worn off)
Bruise -- Jo Yuri (this was overshadowed by the other songs on the album, but i fell hard for its delicate atmosphere this month. jo yuri's vocals on love all really are something else!!)
Call My Name -- Sunmi (yet another flawless sunmi bside. i really hope she releases another mini album--or an album, if we're lucky--soon!)
Elevarte Caer -- Xoel López, Repion
Heavy Lashes -- Ichiko Aoba
Peach Blossom -- Yuju, sokodomo (another song i underestimated earlier in the year. i'm so glad yuju's solo songs have been centering her vocals so heavily, moving away from gfriend's dramatic, showy instrumentals--she really can carry a song, and i'm so glad for the chance to appreciate her singing more!)
