Nightmare Comfort Octavinelle
Prompt: Y/N had a nightmare and asks comfort
Characters: Azul, Jade, Floyd
✨🌸Fluff🌸✨
Fish Mafia my beloveds (✿◡‿◡)
Y/N is going to be gender neutral to the best of my abilities. They/Them Pronouns, and I’m going to try and avoid gendered descriptors <3
TW/CW: Not describing what was in the nightmare but if that ambiguity bothers you and makes your mind spiral please don’t read and have a wonderful night,
Heartslabyul | Savanaclaw | Octavinelle (Here) | Scarabia | Pomefiore | Ignihyde | Diasomnia |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N jolted upright, holding their chest as it felt as if their heart would run away. They tried to calm their breathing and their thoughts, unable to shake the horrors their subconscious cruelly subjected them to. They took some deep breaths and manage to calm themself enough to look at the time. They squinted as the cheap phone Crowley gave them lights up and the numbers display on the screen. It was late.
They wondered if it may be too late to ask for comfort from someone. Of course they could just pet Grim but they didn't feel like dealing with the feline whining and complaining in that moment. So taking another deep breath both to sooth their shaky hands and for some courage, they opened their contacts to make a phone call.
Azul Ashengrotto
Y/N stared at Azul's contact for a while. They weren't sure why he insisted on putting his number in their phone but it was safe to assume it was just easy access to make a deal with him. They sighed softly, not sure if they wanted to risk getting condescended to by the business man at a time like this. They let out a small sigh, pushing that thought to the side and called him. The phone barely had time to ring before his voice came through, as charismatic as ever.
"Y/N!" he started, "what reason do you have to be calling me so late? Answer quickly, I'm a very busy man, you know."
"Ah.. I was actually wondering if..." they trailed off, seemingly losing the ability to form a coherent sentence suddenly.
"Continue," the merman prompted them.
"Maybe you could stay on the phone with me for a while?" they hid their face as if he could see them through the phone. Saying it out loud to Azul was more embarrassing than they had anticipated.
"Hm.. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have company," he paused for a moment, the loud sound of papers being shuffled coming through, "though it'll cost you" they could tell that he was smirking by the smug tone in his voice.
"... maybe I should have called someone else," they sighed shakily.
"No-" he said with a sudden sternness, "ahem.. I've just decided your company will be trade enough."
They laughed a little, "you don't want to be alone either, do you?"
"Don't be ridiculous, I quite enjoy my solitude," he huffed
"Okay, Takoyaki," they snort
"Did you just... you know what nevermind, I'll call you back on video."
Azul hung up, calling back fairly quickly. He already had the phone propped up as he worked. He looked much less put together than his usual professional appearance. His tie was undone, resting around his neck, as well as a few buttons on his shirt were left undone. He was missing the coat from his dorm uniform too, though it was too late to be all that worried about appearances. It's not like there would be customers this late.
Y/N smiled a little, snuggling into their covers after propping their phone up.
"Azul?" they spoke softly
"Y/N, I need to focus. How chatty do you plan on being?" he glances over at them.
"Not very.. Thank you."
"For?"
"Staying here with me"
Azul's cheeks dusted pink as he looked back to his papers, looking composed otherwise, "Mm of course. How else would I guarantee your patronage?" he joked with a small smirk.
Jade Leech
Y/N bit their lip anxiously, as they stared intently at Jade's number. The eel wasn't nearly as volatile as his brother but that was what was insidious about him. What if he used this against them later? What if he blackmails them? It was a fair assumption of course even if they considered the two of them friends but they really didn't want to be alone. They took a deep breath and called him before there was time for anymore doubt to flood their mind.
They bit their bottom nervously, fidgeting with anything and everything in the short amount of time it took for Jade to pick up the phone.
"Good Evening, Y/N," he spoke with a smooth and clearness that implied he hadn't yet gone to bed, "you're up late, is there something you need?"
"Yeah there is," they adjusted themself and took a breath, gathering their confidence.
all their confidence dissipated when they heard his signature mocking yet polite chuckle, "well, are you going to tell me or should I come see for myself?"
"You don't need to come see!" they yelped out at the mere suggestion of the eel coming to them, "..well there's nothing to see, I just had a really bad nightmare,"
"I see, and you wanted some form of comfort?" he asked, voice smooth and words calculated.
"Yes.."
"And how exactly will I be compensated for this?" he asked slyly.
"My eternal gratitude?" they pleaded halfheartedly.
"I need a bit more than that, though you should hurry. We wouldn't want to lose more sleep, would we?"
"No.. how about this, I'll come foraging with you at some point," they suggested, though it wasn't necessarily one of their big interests they were willing. They enjoyed Jade's company anyway so why not?
"Yes, I do believe that will be a sufficient enough trade off,' he chuckled, feeling an immense amount of satisfaction from this exchange.
"So should I call back on video?"
"No, that won't be necessary."
"What?"
another chuckle was heard before the click of Jade hanging up came through. "Maybe he's going to call back, and that's why he's being all cryptic," they thought up this lie to make themself feel better, getting more and more concerned as they waited, but there was no phone call. Instead there was a knock on the door, not the front door, but their bedroom door. They jumped in surprise. "Did he.. come here anyway..?" they questioned internally, getting up and opening the door. Sure enough, there the eel was, directly in front of them with a sly smirk on his face and hand elegantly drawn to his lips.
"Once again, good evening,"
"You really didn't have to come all the way out here.. you look like you haven't slept at all yet,"
"I haven't, we had a lot of work to do at the lounge,"
"Well then why are you here? What's Azul going to say?"
"I'm sure Azul will manage just fine without me, you forget he's the boss," he laughed and leaned down a bit closer to their face, scanning their features for any kind of reaction.
They pushed his face away instinctually, feeling as if he was treating them like some meek prey animal that is to be studied before hunted. He was thoroughly entertained by such a reaction of course.
"Now, I suppose I should ask how you'd like me to get you back to sleep," he smirked, taking off his coat and getting comfortable.
Floyd Leech
Y/N wondered if it would be a good idea to call Floyd. He was a huge wild card, call him when he's in a bad mood and there's no telling what might happen. That's a lie of course, its likely to just result in one of his signature squeezes or getting mauled by the eel. Of course there was a chance he'd be in good mood and they would receive some sort of comfort. They squinted at the phone but shrugged as they call him. The worst that could happen was he threatens them a little, they'd be fine. They smiled a little after telling themself this.
"Shrimpy~!" the eel picked up and whined happily, clearly having just woken up, "whatcha doing up so late?"
"Well, uh.. I had a nightmare," they explained sheepishly.
"Aw, poor Shrimpy," he teased, "how about I come give you a big squeeze," they could just tell from the tone of his voice he had the biggest grin on his face.
"Are you talking about a hug or.."
"A hug obviously," he giggled, the sound of shuffling and something dragging along the mic coming through loud enough that they moved their phone away from them.
"You don't have to come over!" they spoke, panic clear in their voice.
"But I wanna," he whined.
"Okay," they sighed, not wanting to accidentally trigger a mood swing.
"Alright I'll be over in a flash," he hung up.
Y/N sighed and pinched the bridge of their nose before getting up. They walked downstairs and waited patiently in their living room area. Ramshackle was run down sure but at least the sofa was still comfortable to sit on. They jumped as they heard the front door swing open.
"Shrimpy~!" Floyd mused loudly, closing the door and rapidly approaching.
As soon as the two locked eyes, a mischievous glint gleamed in Floyd's eyes. A huge grin was plaster firmly on his face before swiftly pouncing on the magicless human. They let out an loud yelp and squirmed but to no avail. Floyd was getting his hug Cackling while writing this part.
"Poor, poor Shrimpy. Lets get back to bed," Floyd yawned, carrying Y/N back to bed.
He held them in a similar way to how someone would hold their favorite stuffed animal. Y/N didn't mind too much, this was actually quite endearing and cute in his own little way. Floyd was careful not to crush them when he flopped onto the bed with them, though the same can't be said for poor grim who scrambled away quickly. The cuddles were immaculate
Between a big and small feline This is short like me but meh enjoy :33
Running and gasping for air. Grace couldn’t seemed to find herself peace, there the big guy was following her to squeeze her guts out; Grace loves her personal space, and Floyd loves Grace’s personal space as well. As the Pomefiore girl closes the door, of the Botanical Garden with a loud noise. Waking up a certain lion from Savanaclaw that peacefully sleeps in there.
“Ugh.” A roar escape from Leona, as he raises his eyes up to see who is, instantly smirking. “Well, well, well. The scary cat is running away from her boyfriend, isn’t she?”
“He is not—“ She takes a deep breath. “I am trying to escape from Floyd.”
Leona raises his eyebrow. “Do I look like I care?” Rolling to the side he ignores whatever the cat beastwoman has to say.
“Right.”
The grits her teeth, jumping in on of the branches of a tree not very a far from Leona’s point of view. Leona huffs when he sees the notification of Isabelle, popping up. Telling him how “outrageous he is, and he is supposed to act more formally and appropriately around others”, or something like it. His eyes rolls, turning off his phone instantly. Closing his eyes to rest.
“I feel like I understand you, somehow.” Grace looks over the place he is. “We have hard times showing our emotions, and easily get annoyed and angry at everything.”
Leona kept his eyes closed, unknown if he is annoyed like she has said, or actually interested on what she means.
“We show affection by picking up fights, but somehow is always the wrong way. We are possessive over them, but we also want them away from us.”
He takes his phone when it dings with another notification of Isabelle: “Okay, we are talking when you feel like it. I am sorry.” Grace’s ears twitch slightly.
“It sucks, doesn’t it?”
“My fiancée is not a maniacal merman, Grace.” He reajustes his position, making Grace pout at his answer.
“Whatever!” She gets off the tree falling with her high heels set on the ground. She walks towards the door.
“Good luck, or whatever.”
Last words of Leona was somehow sweet. She opens and closes the door, to see Floyd on the floor with a bored expression, but lighting up when seeing her gaze, he takes by the hip, with both hands twirling around. She hisses and tries to get rid of him again, threatening him to scratch his face. But when he hugs her, she simply gives a light nimble on his cheek. Enough to make him complain, awhile Grace cross her arms with a pout. She could be angry, mad and even upset at him, but no. That was her way to show, her love for him, she stays close to him, she always come back, she always bites him, because Grace loves Floyd, even if not the way it is supposed to be shown.
Leona has its own way as well; he is arrogant, full of himself, a show off. Because, that’s his way to impress Isabelle, he wants to show her he is independent. He ignores her for pride, he wants her to think he can better than others, and being better means he won’t be her second best… He looks over his phone, “Whatever.” He almost sends, but deletes and rewrites to: “Okay, mouse.” He sends the message. Somethings never change. But then he writes another thing: “Just take care of yourself.” He is ready to press send and turn off his phone. Leona’s stubbornness will forever speak louder. He just wants her to understand him and fall for him. He wants her… Her to see, that he is trying. Trying for her.
Felines, may them be big or small, they always come around the same problems.
IM SOBBING MY POOR BABIES... MY KITTIES 😭😭
They love their partners sm but they SUCK at showing it...💔💔 It's ok they'll come around 🥺🥺
"y'all are way to intense about poker." Deuce noted.
"shut up, no one asked you." Ace bit back, shooting a glare to his friend.
"don't listen to him, hes just a a sore looser." you gloated, petting a napping Grim curled in your lap.
"hey! you look like some plotting bond villain with that weasel in your lap." Ace huffed.
"hes a feline not a ferret you uncultured swine." you defined your favorite monster, scratching gently behind his hears.
"hes a pain in the ass you can't even keep on a leash. that's why Deuce and I are always trying to catch him for you. you're a pretty lousy prefect if you can't even look after one student." Ace grinned, a satisfied smirk at your mockery.
"I've had about enough out of you, you little-"
"stop!" Deuce stood between you, a glare heavy in his eyes. "why are you two always fighting now a days? you used to be friends!"
both of you fell silent. Ace crossed his arms, suddenly more interested in the patterns on the carpet than the argument at hand.
"whatever. I have homework to do. see you tomorrow Deuce." you scooped up the napping cat in your arms and walked out of Heartslabyul.
you didn't talk to Ace for two days, avoiding or ignoring him. you went to Jack instead as a study buddy, or hid away by yourself in the Mostro Lounge. you tipped well to insure Jade would shoo away anyone who tried to bother you.
"you get into a fight again Shrimpy?" you glanced over your text book to see the mismatched eyes of the merman before you.
"dont worry about it." you brushed him off.
"yaknow Jade and I used to fight as kids sometimes." Floyd ignored you, continuing anyway.
"Ace isn't my brother Floyd. its different." you dismissed.
"oh~ you always treat the little mackerel like a sibling, not crab too?" his eyes twinkled with mischief as he leaned over on your table.
you huffed, turning away from him. Floyd only giggled, before reaching out and grabbing your wrist in an iron grip.
"let's get Shrimpy back together with her boyfriend~ eehehe!" you squeaked in surprise, and slight pain, as the merman dragged you out of the booth.
"he's not my boyfriend Floyd!" you protested in vein as you were already being dragged out of octavinelle.
you are huffing and puffing trying to keep up with Floyd's long strides by the time you enter the library.
"goldfish! there you are~" you glance up to see a very displeased Riddle, glaring untrustingly at your captor.
"are you alright? you look like you've been dragged through most of campus." Riddle ignored Floyd, instead raising a brow at you.
"Shrimpy had a fight with Crab, so we're trying to get them to make up!" Floyd grinned, rows of sharp teeth on display.
"crab??" Riddle backed away like a frightened feline.
"he means Ace. there was, well," you paused. it wasn't an argument, not really.
the pair of you bickered all the time. you'd beat him at poker, he's best you at black jack. it got to the point Deuce would barely play with you two anymore since you'd get so competitive and personal in your insults.
"well?" Riddle prompted, drawing you out of your thoughts. the dorm leader sat with his arms crossed, analytical eyes scanning your face for any signs of deceitfulness.
"he made fun of me for not having any magic. I know everyone does but it... I don't wanna talk to him right now." you finally sighed. you knew Ace hadn't mentioned you being magicless exactly but the implications that you can't even look after Grim because of your lack of natural talent still stung the same.
"I see." Riddle sighed, closing his notes and standing to his feet.
"...thank you Floyd, I can take it from here." he spoke, gesturing for you to follow him.
"nope, I wanna see what happens~ where's the fun in just handing her over anyway." Floyd frowned, grip tightening on your wrist again.
you really didn't wanna have to deal with this right now. you still had studying to do, and if you left your notes and textbooks in Mostro Lounge, you'd have to pay to get them back from the lost and found.
"hey Floyd!" you tugged on the taller boy. he glanced down at you curiously. "why don't you and Riddle play tag? the library has lots of hallways that'll make it harder than playing outside. you should try it!"
you grinned as your captor's eyes lit up, before his predatory gaze turned to the much smaller man before you.
"excuse me! the rules clearly state that there is to be no running in the library. its rather dangerous, never mind how loud it would be, disturbing the other guests-"
"your ten second head start is up fishy~ don't wanna find out what happens if I catch you~" Riddle shrieked as Floyd lunged for him, your captive wrist finally released as Floyd vaulted over the table.
turning your back you quickly scrambled out of the library, not bothering to look back at the chaos behind you.
after collecting your belongings before Azul had locked them away, you made your way back to ramshackle, only to find three students already waiting for you there.
"care to explain why you two are here?" your eyes flashed back and forth from Deuce to Jack.
"they're staging an intervention." Grim piped up from the couch.
you deadpanned. wasn't a feral merman matchmaker enough for one day?
"this better not be about Ace-"
"it is." Deuce confirmed, his arms crossed in a defiant stance. you couldn't even manage to get out of Floyd's grip without a distraction, you were well aware Jack and Deuce could drag you wherever they wanted if they had to.
"look okay, I don't like, hate him or something." you huffed, pulling your arms around yourself.
"then why have you been avoiding him so bad?" Jack asked. the two boys before you were much gentler with you than Ace was. maybe it was because they pitted you for your lack of magic, maybe it was because they were both so soft hearted under all that muscle.
"I just... it felt like from what he said he was implying I can't even look out for Grim since I don't have magic." you admitted. "that I'm helpless and always clinging onto you guys for protection or something."
the two boys looked at each other, before their eyes turned back to you.
"listen okay its been a long day. I really just wanna take a shower and head to bed." you sighed, rubbing your wrist, the same one clamped in Floyds grip maybe an hour or so ago.
"yeah I agree." your head shot to the new voice. Ace leaned on the doorway to the kitchen, arms crossed as he scuffed his shoes on the ground.
you groaned. you should have expected this. that's why Grim had called it an intervention.
"we'll wait upstairs." Jack stated, scooping up Grim and heading up, Deuce just behind him.
you and Ace sighed in unison, glancing to each other, then quickly away.
"alright listen. I didn't say anything about you not having magic, and I definitely didn't say anything about you being helpless." Ace defended.
"I don't really care anymore Ace." you shook your head, flopping down onto the couch.
"you don't? cool then we can call the others back-"
"that's not what I meant." you grit your teeth but kept your voice calm. "I mean, I don't care what you said. I care what you meant. and you meant to insult me by calling me weak."
"I absolutely did not!" he jumped to his own defense, arms still crossed as he stood before you.
"look I get it, im a magicless student, I'm a foreigner from god knowns where, and im a 'weak little girl' in a school full of guys." you stuck the ginger boy with a sharp glare. "dont pull your punches next time. tell me how you actually feel."
"you wanna know how I actually feel?" Ace growled. you grinned triumphantly.
"go ahead, spit it out." he took a deep break, knuckles white as he held his arms.
"I feel like you dont need me anymore." that was about the last thing you thought he'd say.
Ace continued, eyes shut tight and shoulders taught.
"Deuce and I have known you the longest, apart from Grim I guess, but! we were your friends when everyone else saw you as a nobody. and yeah okay, maybe at first I thought you were no good since you kept getting me caught. but after that first day, when we defeated that monster in the mines, I have never mistaken you for weak again."
blood red eyes opened to meet yours head on.
"I care about you a lot okay, a-and I know Deuce and Jack do to but- I just care about you a lot... don't- nevermind." you watched as your friend folded in on himself, turning his head away to hide from you.
"say you're sorry."
"what?!" Ace turned his head back to you.
you grinned, legs crossed on the couch as you watched him.
"say you're sorry for hurting my feelings." Ace grumbled but took a deep breath.
"...I'm sorry... that you took my words the wrong way and didn't actually listen to-"
"OH FOR THE SEVENS SAKE JUST APOLOGIZE!" Deuce bellowed from the top of the stairs.
"I'm sorry I hurt your feelings!" Ace jumped and flinched.
"thank you. apology excepted." you stood, brushing the dust from your uniform. Ace sighed and shook his head, arms falling to his sides.
the young man gasped when you wrapped your arms around him, hiding your face in his shoulder. you spoke quietly, in the hopes the three upstairs wouldn't hear you.
"I love you too Ace. and I do listen, even when you don't know how to say it."
he choked on his own breath, but quickly wrapped his arms around you, returning your hug. you were pulled tight to his chest, the smell of roses and cherries lingered on his skin, warm like summer time.
when you pulled away you cupped his cheeks, noting the pink dusting his nose and ears. Ace's grip on your waist tightened, and before you knew it his lips were on yours.
it was little more than a peck, but apparently the other three had picked just the wrong time to descend the stairs.
"EWWWW THE HUMANS ARE EXCHANGING SALIVA! IM GUNNA BE SICK!"
"shut up Grim you lick your own butthole."
🔫 mythical creatures La Squadra x gn!reader hcs -Your Favorite Diori.
👀 possibly with stuff important to each species like helping a Naha through shed or taking care of a werewolf’s coat during the full moon pls.
Monster Boy AU! La Squadra Being Taken Care of by Reader
Hehe my mind is going rabid I love monster boy AUs 🥰🥰 Also this has to be one of my favorites omg I love it
Warnings: Monsters x Human! Reader, mentions of playing with/running fingers through reader's hair in Sorbet + Gelato's part (ik things like that can make some readers feel uncomfortable or take them out of reading the x reader, so I'm putting a small warning), mentions of blood/wounds in Melone's part
Harpy! Sorlato
They usually have each other to look after themselves and clean, but ever since they started dating you they finally decided to let you join them
Preening each other is a very intimate ritual for them and to have you help is a major sign of trust within the relationship
It's not just you looking after your boyfriends' feathers, Gelato loves "preening" your hair to return his affections too
It's usually just him playing with it, lightly running his claws through it and if your hair is long enough he might play around with a couple of hairstyles like ponytails, buns, etc.
Sorbet mostly observes while you and Gelato bond, finding it a special moment to see. A warm feeling spreads through his chest at how soft you are to each other
He does join you two on these moments usually, but for now he'll just look on and coo about how cute his boyfriend and s/o are at the moment
Satyr!Formaggio
Satyrs are known to be creatures who enjoyed parties and drinking, so seeing drunk Formaggio at your door is fairly common
Drunk cheese goat care is certainly not for everyone though; he can get (very) grabby and talkative, slurring about how much he loves you and how hot you are
Sometimes if you're lucky he's just lovey dovey and not so much horny. He just follows you around, his little goat tail wagging when you look back at him or smile
As expected, you also have to make sure your hungover boyfriend is alright too
He can usually handle himself when he's hungover, but it's very common for him to get migraines so you always leave out medicine and water on the table next to the couch he slept on
Although he knows how to handle his alcohol, Formaggio knows how he is when he goes overboard and is thankful Every time he wakes up on your couch coddled up in a warm blanket
Gorgon!Illuso
Although his pride got in the way of him asking for your help, his snakes were able to send the message out to you on his behalf
Snake maintenance can be tricky, it's something Illuso is glad to have you for
Not to mention these are the rarer times you could observe your boyfriend's face safely
You two usually sit in front of mirror when doing his hair and the reflection in the mirror is the only thing keeping you safe since he can't have any eye coverings on when working with hair
Snake care for a gorgon involves making sure they keep fed and that their shed goes well since all a gorgon's "hair" can do is grow
The snakes usually love this time too, they coil around you constantly, glad to spend some time outside the confines of the ponytails
Zombie!Prosciutto
There's not much to do to help Prosciutto tbh
His self care is top tier for the most part. He has expensive colognes that cover up his natural decomposing smell well and his hand sewing is impeccable for the moments a limb (or 2) falls off
But something he loves about you is the warmth you had
He isn't one to outwardly ask for affection, but you notice how he stays close to you or how he always convinces you to stay in bed when you two wake up everyday
Prosciutto cracks a smile every time you hold his hand or hold onto his arm when you're with him
If he still had a heartbeat, it'd be pumping fast when you indulge him in his unspoken wants
Merman!Pesci
Fish in general are pretty low maintenance, so just like Prosciutto his needs are mostly just for comfort/psychological
Due to how drastic your lives are and how clingy Pesci is, please just bring him human items
He always gives you various shells, a big blush across his face as he tells you how each one reminded them of you
So when you do the same, it makes him so happy that he unintentionally splashes the water around him with his tail
Vampire! Melone
How Melone went by before he met you was he commonly visited the local nightlife scene, drinking the blood of the men and women he'd meet
But now he has you and he would pester you to let him get a sip of your blood non stop
He'd come up behind you from behind, giving your neck a small lick "C'mon darling, not even a small taste? I know you'd be sweet~" You only shoved him away, "How many times do I have to say no? I just bought you some cow blood too, why can't you busy yourself with that ?"
But eventually you gave into his peer pressure and he was able to drink a tiny bit
His eyes light up at the metallic taste of the red liquid, whispering a "Di Molto!" Before tasting it some more
Seriously you had to pry him off and wash your new wound so you wouldn't pass out
Werecat!Ghiaccio
Every full moon could be considered hell for Ghiaccio, especially when it's time for his claws to shed
It's not like he could use a standard scratching board like a domestic cat, he turns into a 5'9" bobcat. Finding things to accomadate him is difficult
But when you entered his life, you wanted to help him as best as you can and make his transformations easier
Ghiaccio and you agreed on trimming his claws to make the shedding process quicker and it surprisely works
Of course it's never pleasant, you earn plenty of growls from your feline boyfriend and on rare occasions you had to restrain him with rope or chains to prevent him from lashing out
But it's worth it to see Ghiaccio less tense and him giving into purring at the attention you give him after the stressful manicure
Minotaur! Risotto
The care Risotto gets is mostly you encouraging him to take care of himself
It's usually the small stuff though like brushing through his fur and cleaning any new wounds he got from a recent fight
It was easy for Risotto to let you be this close to him and it felt nice to be treated with such gentle care
He literally melts if you pet him behind the ear
it's almost off putting to see such a naturally more defensive and aggressive creature be this soft, you're just happy to see him actually enjoy himself for once
CYOTFS MASTERLIST
Taglist: @xfirebenderx @serenadesvt
“Listen Y/N I don’t know what emergency you have that’s so important that you can’t even FaceTime- HOLY SHIT.” Mingyu stops dead in his tracks as he enters Y/N’s living room. The couch where the five of them spend Saturday movie nights was now occupied by a new tenant. He hadn’t quite decided if this guest was welcomed or not and the fact that this man was now sitting on his corner of the couch didn’t help his case. Correction, Merman. By the looks of everyone else’s face he could confirm he wasn’t in fact dreaming about today or the day before.
Y/N could feel the tension in the air. Perhaps she thought, she should take the least, “You guys remember Soonyoung right?”
Y/N could feel the tension in the air. Perhaps she thought, she should take the least, “You guys remember Soonyoung right?”
The man of the hour cautiously stands up on his feet before making his way over. Mingyu hadn’t noticed at first but Soonyoung wore one of Seungcheol’s shirts from volleyball. “It’s great to meet the rest of you again. Thank you for saving my life.” He bows respectfully before gesturing to the couch for them to sit. Hoshi sat quietly at his side not bothering to look at these new faces.
Seokmin instinctively elbows Mingyu, it was unlike the life of the party to be speechless. He manages to cut in “It’s no problem, I’m sure you would’ve done the same if the tables were turned.” He continues to carry on the conversation from beside Soonyoung on the couch. Mingyu makes his way towards the extra coach space on the lazy boy beside the merman but is blocked by the orange haired Mainecoon. The feline quickly laid down with its tail wrapping around itself in comfort. He was never been fond of cats and after an episode between him and his neighbor cat he could confidently say the feeling was mutual. Quietly he opts to occupy the floor instead, trying his best to stretch his long legs across without bumping into the glass coffee table.
Y/N tries to dispel the tension in the room by heading towards the kitchen. “I’ll be right back with some water. Seungkwan and Hansol, do you mind helping out please?”
Y/N tries to dispel the tension in the room by heading towards the kitchen. “I’ll be right back with some water. Seungkwan and Hansol, do you mind helping out please?”
The three of them make their way to the back of the house, Seungkwan looked towards living room to ensure they were out of hearing range. Finally he half whispers and yells into his friend, “What in gods name is he doing here?”
“I’m just as confused as you are.” Y/N turns to her fridge and takes out a blue Brita pitcher, as she continues, “I was bussing home from work and when I got off he was standing in front of the stop in front of my house.”
Hansol in the meantime opens the cupboards for enough glasses for everyone, setting them down on a serving tray kept on the counter close by.
“No I mean. why is he here!” Seungkwan drags the last word out before peeking at the living room.
“He says he has nowhere to go. Something about not being able to go back to the waters for now.” Y/N couldn’t help but pout as she recalled the story he told her. Soonyoung wanted to get away from the responsibilities as the son of a Government official, one of his friends offered him a getaway up on the surface but they never came through. Y/N knew the others wouldn’t have understood so there really wasn’t a point in telling them what was told in confidence. “Besides, he looked like he got hit by a bus when I found him. I couldn’t just leave him.”
“You could’ve.” Hansol mutters under his breath earning him a light smack on the arm from Y/N. With all the glasses filled with water, they started to make their way back only to be stopped.
“If the Government finds out they’ll take him away and punish you for not turning him in.” Mingyu’s voice filled the room like a boom as he stood leaning against the frame of the kitchen leading toward the dining and living room.
“DON'T SNEAK UP ON ME LIKE THAT!” Seungkwan yelled.
Y/N, placed a finger over her lips to quiet him down. This only earned her an eye roll. Mingyu’s face was evident of worry as she answered him “Look I’m just helping him lie low until he can find a safer place to stay.”
“I can’t believe this.” He scoffs before rolling his eyes.
She passes the tray over to Mingyu who easily carries all 6 glasses with ease. He could tell right away she wasn’t going to give up, as she whispering to him, “I don’t want the Government to kill the guy. He’s had it rough.”
Mingyu was the only one who could see how determined she was to protect Soonyoung. Like a little kid trying to heal the wing of a bird that fell down from its nest, he knew he couldn’t convince her with plan conversation. “Well would you rather Seungcheol kill you? Cause that’s probably what’s gonna happen after he finds out!”
“When he finds out what exactly?” A familiar voice causes all four friends to feel a chill go down their necks. The shock was evident on Y/N’s face could say it all as her brother walks through the front doors.
Dinner at the Demers
(Story Post)
“Here we are,” Fay said pulling up the driveway. He parked and smiled to Theo. “Let me get your door.” “I got it,” Theo chuckled, opening his door and getting out himself. As his case worker, Fay had been helping Theo a lot with talking out his feelings around his pregnancy. The merman was more than friendly and Theo always felt comfortable around him, even when it came to very personal things like body dysmorphia or feelings of loneliness. Theo had found that he and Fay had a few things in common, like the fact that they'd both left home to pursue their careers. After just a few sessions with him, Theo liked to consider the merman his friend and was very happy to be invited over to his place for dinner. “Thanks for having me,” Theo said as he followed Fay to the front door. “I don't get out much, especially now.” “It's no problem,” Fay said. “Dari was glad to hear you were coming. He has a habit of taking group members in under his wing. Camilo's like a son to him now.”
“I'm pretty sure I'm older than Dari…” Theo said. “You're the same age actually,” Fay stated. Theo blinked. “He's thirty?!” “Looks can be deceiving,” Fay said. “He looks like he's twenty at most,” Theo stated. “Is he aging backwards?” “It's a little complicated but it isn't my place to explain,” Fay said. “Let's just say his body needs time to catch up.” “Okay, but, like…” Theo rubbed his neck. “I'm gonna have a hard time not thinking about that.” “If you get him in the right mood, Dari will tell you whatever,” Fay assured. “Anyway, we eat a lot of fish in this household, but I understand someone in your condition might prefer something safer so we also have chicken. What do you prefer?” “Oh, fish is fine,” Theo said. “Dr. Aias said there really isn't any diet restrictions for me, so long as I eat healthy for myself. I can smoke and drink if I want. The baby's not going anywhere. I don’t smoke. Haven’t really touched alcohol either… Still feels kinda wrong.” “Fair enough,” Fay unlocked the door and let them inside. “Oh, don't let the cat out.” “Huh?” Theo looked down to try and see if any animals were at his feet but he then realised he couldn't see his feet at all and a second later, a cat dashed out from under him and onto the porch. “Ah, sorry Theo, I wasn't thinking,” Fay said. He managed to catch the feline and pick her up. “This is Slippers. She's very curious and friendly.” Theo offered a hand to sniff and then pet the cat on the head. “She's very cute.” “I got her as a gift for Dari a while back,” Fay said. “He's very protective of her so even though we don't get much traffic out here, she's best as an indoor cat.” “Got it.” “Come meet the kids,” Fay said. “Twins should be down for a nap right now, but otherwise, trouble should be about.” It didn't take long until the first few heads popped out to see them. “Papa!” one child yelled, flinging themselves around Fay's waist. Another just stood there and pointed at Theo. “Baby belly!” Theo flushed red. “Uh, yeah...” “Otter, pointing is rude,” Fay said, pushing his son's hand down. “Apologise to my friend Theo.” “Sorry, my friend Theo,” Otter said, still just staring up at the man. “It's fine,” Theo assured. “Siv, mon poussain,” Fay said to the other boy, sliding a hand between his side and his son to pry him off. “Papa can't move if you're hugging so tight.” “I missed you,” Siv whined. “I missed you too,” Fay said, petting his son's head. “Where's Daddy?” “Green room,” Siv said, pointing to the back of the house. “Greenhouse. And your sisters?” “Um... Ari and Kat with Milo and Zoe with Daddy and the babies sleep.” “And do we remember the babies names?” Fay asked. “Um...” “I do!” Otter said quickly. “I know you do,” Fay said patting Otter's head. “I want Siv to remember. They're a little harder.” “Oh.” Siv racked his brain. “Uh, Anna and...” He looked at Otter who was signing to him. “Isa...belle?” “Annabelle and Isabelle, that's right,” Fay approved. “Next time, no cheating. Get your big brother and let's meet in the greenhouse, okay?” Siv looked at Otter and then grabbed his arm. “Specifics... Both of you get your eldest brother, understood?” Fay rephrased. “Yeah!” Otter said, letting go of his father and taking Siv's arm to go get Milo with him. Fay took Theo outside to the back of the house. Theo was immediately impressed by the spacious yard, with a pool as well as a relatively large greenhouse. Inside, there were rows and rows of vegetables and flowers growing. Dari was found between the leaves, dwarfed by his own six-foot-tall tomato plants. Zoe was toddling about at his feet and grabbing any ripe tomatoes she could get her little hands on. Dari looked upset when he heard Fay and Theo entering. “Zoe, tomatoes in the basket, bunny,” he instructed as he pulled off his gardening gloves. Zoe completely ignored him and just kept grabbing tomatoes, ripe or not and trying to put them in her mouth. “My love,” Fay said, stepping up to his husband and wrapping his arms around him. Dari took his sun hat off and wacked Fay over the arm with it. “You should've reminded me Theo was coming over! I would've started dinner early.” “I told you this morning. What more reminders do you need?” Fay asked. “And that's not a jab, I want you to know.” “...Maybe, an hour before you leave work,” Dari said. “It takes two hours to make dinner?” Fay asked. “It can!” Dari said. “It allows me time to prepare. Now a guest will have to wait with us.” Fay kissed his forehead. “I'll make dinner. You can do your thing. Hang out with Theo.” “Hi, Theo,” Dari finally said, acknowledging his guest. “I'm sorry about this.” “You really have nothing to apologise for,” Theo said. “I don't mind waiting to eat. I had a big lunch.” “Come here,” Dari waved Theo over. Theo obeyed, going over to Dari. “Your garden is amazing. I feel like you never have to get groceries.” “That’s the idea,” Dari said, nodding. He hovered a hand over Theo's stomach. “Can I touch?” “Sure. You're not the first.” Dari placed his hand on the protrusion and rubbed softly. “Aliens, right?” “That's right. Though, they’re not big enough to feel or anything…” “I'll go start dinner,” Fay said, leaving them be. “Were you abducted?” Dari asked. Theo shook his head. “No. Well, not really. Not in the traditional sense. I was...visited in my dreams.” “That's different...” Dari pondered. “Different?” Dari took his hand back and patted his own chest. “I was abducted. I had children for the aliens, each ripped from me the moment they were born. Or even before.” Theo frowned. “I'm so sorry... That's terrible.” Dari shrugged. “I don't really...feel anything from it anymore. It's like a part of my life I won't get back so why should I lend it any feelings?” “I mean, I guess that's good...” Theo considered. Dari suddenly lifted his own shirt, revealing his slightly distended and scarred stomach. “You see this ‘X’ scar? They implanted an artificial womb inside me and a ‘gamete converter’, which basically steals my DNA and turns it into egg cells... In a way, I stole it from them... I was able to make my children with it, so...it's like...not all bad.” “...Why are you telling me all this?” Theo asked. Dari pulled his shirt back down. “I don't do well in groups but when I heard your situation, I knew I had something in common and I feel like everyone needs people they can relate to for support. I want you to know that I'm here and, at least on the non-consensual alien pregnancy level, I understand more than most people will ever understand.” Theo smiled a bit. “Oh. Thank you. I guess you're right.” “If there's ever anything I can help you with, don't hesitate to contact me,” Dari said. “And don't for a second think you have to forgive them for doing this to you. I haven't.” Theo nodded slowly. “...Um, so Fay mentioned you and I are the same age?” Dari tilted his head. “Are you thirty?” Theo nodded. “You just... You look so young.” Dari put his hands on his hips. “Why, cause I'm short?” “No, well, um...” Dari looked away and started meddling with some cucumber. “I was abducted when I was fifteen. This thing inside me synthesised a chemical similar to estrogen so I didn't really have a chance to finish puberty until I got back... I'm on hormone therapy now. I was supposed to be, ever since I got back, but I couldn't really do it while pregnant five times, could I?” “Five times?” Theo asked. “I thought you have eight kids.” “Twins exist, Theo,” Dari said. “Fay carried Otter and Milo was born well before I got back to Earth.” “But, wouldn’t that—” Theo was cut off when a big red beast of a person came bounding outside carrying two little girls with him and with Siv and Otter at his heels. They came inside and the small children immediately dispersed to go look at the plants and pick anything that looked ripe enough to eat off the stem. The giant red man went directly to the adults and loomed over them, his head nearly brushing the ceiling. Theo was shocked beyond belief and froze up immediately. “Milo, my biggest boy!” Dari cooed wrapping his arms around his son's waist. He was two or three heads shorter than Milo and could barely see above his chest. “Milo, this is Theo. He's a friend.” Milo put the girls down and waved to Theo, before signing to his father. “Milo says he really likes your hair,” Dari said. “I think it's because it's a colour he can actually see well. He’s a bit colour blind.” “Oh, um. Tell him thanks for me?” Theo requested. “Tell him yourself. He can hear you, he just can't speak like us,” Dari explained, happily patting Milo's chest. “He's my big growly boy...” “Oh! Okay, thanks Milo,” Theo said, running a hand through his own hair. “I need to dye it again soon though.” Milo nodded, smiling and signed again. “He thinks you look cool with the roots,” Dari said. “It’s almost like Fay and Ari’s hair. You’re like an honorary merperson.” Theo smiled. “Thanks, but I think Fay pulls off two colours much better than I do. It’s not even blended.” Milo signed again to Dari but Dari didn’t translate and just signed back. Milo looked a little upset and then signed again. “Milo wants to compliment you on your pregnancy,” Dari said. “I told him it might not be appropriate but he insisted.” “That's cool. Thanks, Milo,” Theo said, trying to stay calm in front of the seven-foot-tall red man. “How um, how old is he?” “Twelve or thirteen, we think,” Dari said. “Hard to say.” “You don't know?” Theo asked. “Yeah, well... They weren't really handing out Earth calendars aboard the sex trafficking space ship, so I really don't know when he was born,” Dari said. “We use the day that he came home to us as his birthday.” “That's really... That's some crazy stuff that happened to you, Dari,” Theo said. “I'm so sorry.” “Don't be. It was years ago.” “But really, you talk about it so casually. You know, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to.” Dari patted Theo’s shoulder. “It happened. It was terrible. It's left me physically, mentally and emotionally scarred for life. But that's all it is. Scars. I can't do much about it. All you can really try to do with scars is put lotion on them or tattoo over them. I'm tired of doing that, so I just wear them. The nightmares come less and less. My physical scars don't hurt anymore. When I tell my story, I can detach myself from it. I don't let it bother me.” He patted Theo's cheek. “Oh, but if it bothers you, I won't talk about it.” “Oh, no, no. I don't mind,” Theo said. “Thank you for opening up.” Dari sighed and put his hands on his hips. “Of course, you don't have to share either if you don't want to. But I am curious... You weren't abducted, but you also don't strike me as the type of guy who hangs around alien bars. No, wait. You mentioned dreams? How does that work?” “It's kind of embarrassing...” Theo said. Dari lifted his own shirt and patted his stomach. “Looking four months pregnant for the rest of your life is embarrassing.” Theo proceeded to tell Dari everything, how the celestial apparently impregnated him in his dreams and how on the first day, he grew so rapidly. Dari listened intently and when he was done, offered up his sympathy and advice. Theo mentioned Henderson, but only as a friend helping him out. He didn't mention that they'd slept together because he still didn't know what it meant yet. They chatted a little more for a while until it was dinner time and they headed on inside. Theo enjoyed his time at the Demers house. The food was good and there was nothing but energy in the dining room as they ate. Siv took a liking to Theo in particular and spent most of the meal telling him about his favourite frog he found the other day. Fay later expressed to his guest how delighted he was to see Siv opening up so easily with Theo since he was apparently the shiest child. This made Theo feel quite a bit better about having to listen to ‘hop hop hop’ and ‘ribbitty ribbit’ over and over. At the end of the night, Fay drove him home. He welcomed Theo to their house any time and Fay would be happy to drive. Theo thanked him for hosting him and then got himself ready for bed. He was exhausted from just being around so many children at one time and was very glad that he would not be dealing with anything like that for himself any time soon.
Part IX
Tumblr media
Words: 900+
Pairing: Hendery x Brittany (OC)
Genre: Fluff, suggestive
Rating: PG-15
Warnings: Implied smut, suggestive themes, mentions of mating and marking, mentions of pregnancy
The evening came, and Hendery and Brittany’s night of passion commenced. Every touch, kiss, and everything else was more passionate than the first time. Neither could have asked for anything better. Hendery marked her, and they were forever one.
Now, Brittany stood in front of her bathroom mirror as she gently cleansed the double rows of teeth marks that had been punctured into the space between her neck and her shoulder. It was a beautiful tattoo resembling something so sacred between two lovers. She didn’t deny the painful sensation of a thousand bees stinger all at once, but for what it was worth, she didn’t mind so much.
“There will still be a scar,” Hendery said as he was bathing himself.
“Permanent,” Brittany had remembered his warning before he sank his teeth in. “It’s just a rule of thumb to clean and disinfect open wounds. Not that you have any diseases to carry.”
“Hendery understands,” the merman smiled just before rinsing his hair.
After putting a little lotion on the area, Brittany let her hair down, the strands caressing her new scar. Looking down at her own stomach, her hand grazed over it. The possibility of a child nestled within both excited and startled her. She wasn’t ready, and neither was her mate; yet it was something they both came to desire.
“Is Brittany okay?” Hendery asked, interrupting her thoughts.
She met his gaze and smiled. “I am,” she reassured before strolling over to him.
“Brittany was biting her lip. She does that when she’s deep in thought.”
“You’re quite the observer.”
“Hendery watches, because he loves his mate.”
Brittany leaned in and kissed him.
“I love you, too,” she whispered against his lips.
Their foreheads pressed together as Brittany kneeled on the floor to be level with Hendery.
Releasing a sigh, Brittany declared, “I’ll take a test if I start to feel weird.”
“What kind of test?” Hendery’s brow furrowed. “Is Brittany getting sick?”
“I don’t know,” she shrugged as she pulled up her stool to sit on. “My body will be able to tell if I’m pregnant or not, but as far as symptoms go, those won’t show up for another two or three weeks.”
Hendery only slightly smiled and kissed the palm of her hand.
“Hendery will know by morning,” he adamantly declared before draining the tub.
There was a long pause after his statement. Brittany was confused.
“By morning?” she repeated as Hendery dried himself off, his tail slowly turning back into legs. “What do you mean ‘by morning?’ Aren’t I the one carrying the child?”
“Merfolk have a sort of sixth sense in knowing when they’re expecting.”
“What is with y’all and sixth senses?” chuckled Brittany as she handed him his purple boxers. “It’s so similar to a dog’s keen sense of smell.”
It was Hendery’s turn to shrug as he was figuring out how his merman side worked in regards to having a mate. His neck burned from the bite mark that appeared on his skin, his heart yearned for the woman he loved when she wasn’t held in his arms, and he felt a burst of energy just from making Brittany his. His nerves were going haywire, but he knew it was normal.
The two reentered the bedroom and changed the blood stained sheets.
“Hendery is sorry about that,” he nervously laughed as he put the dirty sheets in the hamper.
“It’s nothing a little hydrogen peroxide can’t remove,” Brittany dismissed. “I’ll take care of it this week.”
Louis then trotted into the room before Brittany could shut the bedroom door. The cat hopped onto the bed for some pre-sleep snuggling, a routine that he seemed to insist on doing each night. Hendery lay down on his side of the bed and began stroking the purring feline. Brittany then slid under the fresh sheets and turned off the lamp before switching on the star projector, the color a crystalized ocean blue.
“You know, Louis,” she addressed the sleepy cat. “You may or may not be a big brother soon, so enjoy all of the attention and cuddles. You’ll still get them, but your brother or sister will need us more.”
Hendery laughed at how his mate interacted with Louis as she gently rubbed his belly.
“He’ll be the best big brother,” he promised.
After a few minutes of cuddling Louis, the cat jumped to his feet and scampered off the bed and to his little bed in the corner of the room.
“Good night, Louis,” Brittany cooed at the cat before turning back to her mate. She kissed a long and passionate kiss to his lips and whispered, “Good night, my love.”
“Sweet dreams, Brittany,” he whispered back.
The moment he cradled her in his arms, both of them were fast asleep.
-
Hendery woke up the next morning with a joyous feeling in the pit of his stomach. He couldn’t put into words what he was feeling, but his sixth sense was confirmed when Louis hopped up on the bed and nuzzled his head against where Brittany’s stomach would be as if he knew a new addition was on their way. Hendery was going to be a father, and Brittany a mother.
Brittany’s eyes fluttered open. She stared back at her smiling mate and let out a groaned, “Good morning, Mr. Sunshine.”
Hendery said nothing but kissed Brittany’s cheek.
“Baby,” he cried in glee.
“Yes?” she assumed he was addressing her.
However, he shook his head and placed a hand over where her womb would be.
Brittany gasped when it hit her like a truckload of bricks. “You mean?”
Hendery kissed her head and said, “Baby.”
Coraline au (Plotting)
N/A: This dog exists in Marvel comics...his name and origins I do not know, but, I saw him in a Spiderman comic along with Dr Stranger, so, I´m taking my own spin here.
@djinmer4 @dannybagpipesarecalling @sailorstar9 @discordsworld @bamfoftheundead
In somewhence without end or begin, a council meeting is being held to treat big cosmic events that can jeopardize the universe they habit for this period. Time is irrelevant to immortal beings, however, with IT looming about any living creature is always a painful reminder that forever is a lie.
Cosmo the green spectral dog is walking with his 4 paws to his spot as the meeting is in session. A Doberman is speaking with great urgency of the most important fact, the council of Reeds and what they must be done.
"A human that think above of gods is dangerous, but, 10 versions of the same human that have the infinity gauntlet is a problem...it may draw IT´s attention or...IT´s children. I want solutions" the Doberman speaks and the others are muttering solutions.
Cosmo, the magical dog, is the first of his kind and is the first to suggest something. "We must end all the Reeds...Is not a task we will enjoy as we are dogs, our duty is to protect humanity, however, this duty consist in ended the Reeds for a greater good...they have show incapable of reasoning and at one point caused the zombie apocalypse in that universe...We must end them now" Cosmo states not feeling joy and the other dogs nod as well.
Their eyes glow and a distant location, in a different time, 10 Reeds were turned into dust and their goblet are delivered to the dogs with all the infinities stones.
"Now, what´s the other pressing matter?" Cosmo asked but a Yorkshire Terrier asked about the boy Reeds and his godlike powers, however, Cosmo assures him that the boy is not a god is just IT´s lies ("and let me you a cruel story on how IT deceive an entire planet of humans to think the kid was god and well...in the end, Galaticus eat the planet")
"The alliance with the cats...what to do?"
"Gaia is all about friendship and fucks with Dagon," Cosmo said amused "but, yes, what to do with that poor human?" Cosmo replied and one dog, a hellhound, replies confidently.
"The cats wanted a mate for IT, but, now the mate is stuck in Dagon´s lair...IT won´t help the human as IT is IT and the cats can´t help as now she has to defeat squidboy to be worthy in IT´s eyes...not wanting to sound bad, but, why should we help?" the hellhound asked thinking in a pragmatic way.
"True, we could ignore this situation, hellhound, but, we shouldn´t...the cats always fulfil their word and think about a free IT card?" Cosmo speaks and many mutters in approvement. "plus, the woman is a nice person with a good heart under a very slimy situation...yes, jokes on Dagon are always funny" the dogs laughed " but my point is, Gaia would want us to help this child and if we do things right we can show the middle finger to Dagon and IT, so, really, we must and will help this woman, Kitty Pryde with this situation"
"I have no objection here, Cosmo"
And soon the dogs are plotting. _______________________________
In Fortress city, the Pryde´s house is not in a good shape, words like "not fish" are written on the outside walls as well rotten meat is rotting on the front door. Not an ideal situation as Kitty is the "not fish" that the fish people can´t assimilate.
The dogs, cats, Prydes and Kitty are trying to find out a new plan for this madness, in all the ideas being given, the idea to ask help from the cats´ patron is shut down.
"Uhm, as Kitty is doing Dagon´s jobs for him, which gives us some time" one of the dogs' answers calmly "we need time, cats" the dogs trail off as the cats don´t speak much.
Jupiter the cat is pondering the next step. "We need help from outside, but, the dogs are right, we need time...Kitten, Dagon will ask you to do some marketing work for him, in the meanwhile, the best thing to do is to follow along" Jupiter said remembering that IT won´t help and the cats are too upset with IT to even look at IT.
Terry sighs and speaks. "Look, he´s a god fish, right? If we burn him..." Jupiter shakes his head "No, Terry, burning Dagon with a mere human-made fire won´t help...we need time, yes, time is what we need"
Kitty looks at Jupiter for a moment as if he has a plan, and before she could ask any further, the cat states that are gods strong enough to defeat Dagon´s boss. "defeat the boss, you defeat Dagon...Dagon is not as powerful as he made the others believe, he is nothing more than a lackey...but..."
"But this is something your patron wants me to do it, right?" Kitty asked already knowing the answer. "Jupiter, your patron is a son of a bitch!"
"Can´t deny that, Kitten"
"But...I want to defeat Dagon in a definitely...so, we need time to plan,"
___________________________________
True to Jupiter´s words, Dagon´s lackeys(ironic word once Kitty learns that Dagon is indeed a smaller fish in the tank) arrive in her house to take to a photo session. Miss Presley, beautiful as a fish people can should be, has a condescending smile on her beautiful face and is guiding Kitty to her car.
"Remember to smile prettily when talking about Fortress City and our new movie" Miss Presley continues and Kitty can imagine her as a high school bully without problems.
"Yes, how can I forget, Dagon is life, Dagon is everything...should I say Fuck fish too, you know, to help the cause?" Kitty asked and Miss Presley would do more than a cruel remark, but, Kitty has Jupiter with her.
Jupiter frowns at Miss Presley and the woman leaves Kitty to be in the car as she remarks that the security will be at her side during the interview...Kitty ought to go back to her beloved city(for the sake of her parents)
_____________________________________ The hottest MTV program is doing an "inside out" about the latest hit movie, "Love and lake" a story where a merman falls in love with a human, some critics are saying that is a rip off of Shape of Water, while some are loving more monster fucker movies, either way, the hottest MTV program is advertising the movie all the time in multiple ways.
The host, a young DJ that was cover of some Pop magazine, is the one to interview Kitty about her album and also to ask about her opinion on the movie "love and lake"
Of course, the host is also a fish person.
"Listen, you filthy human," the host said once the two are alone, the show will be ready in 10 minutes, "you are here because you have a utility to Dagon, you better not embarrass Dagon!"
"Nah, he does that on his own by mere existing" Kitty replies and the DJ is throwing bad words at Kitty, forgetting her own role as "cool MTV DJ" however, Jupiter the cat shut her up by clawing her face.
"Stupid cat!" the words are scream with certain violence that it is making the employees come to check on them. Jupiter does not talk but is only smiling widely.
The manages shows up and set the fight apart and informed Kitty she has 8 minutes until the interview begins. "A room is ready for you, we will take you when is the time" she informed as clinically and cold as one can do.
______________________________
"Jupiter, what we do now?" Kitty asked as the feline is in her lap in silence looking at the dark corner of the improvised room.
"I don´t know" Jupiter replies feeling crestfallen.
"Glad, I know what to do" a new voice joins the conversation. Cosmo, the magical dog, is there.
"Cosmo, the magical dog!"Kitty exclaims with Jupiter safely in her lap, a sense of joy fills her being. "How did you enter here?" is a dumb question that she can´t stop herself by asking.
The dog smiles and greets Jupiter that is in his Tsu Tsu mode, typical of cats and explains himself.
"I cast a spell here, so, the conversation will be between us and I´m Cosmo for a reason...Dagon wishes he could stop me" Cosmo states and licking Jupiter´s face to annoy the cat speaks "I have a plan" and this makes Jupiter pay attention. "In fact, we have a plan, you can come out now," Cosmo said and out of blue, she is here.
Dazzler shows up with a bird on her shoulder and a big smile on her face. "So, a pretty little dog and bird told me someone is having problem with fishes"
And Cosmo makes an introduction. "This is Dazzler Galaticus´s Herald, and this little bird here is one of the Pheonix´s birds. Let´s say we all here dislike fishes"
And this turn of events is a good change for Kitty Pryde and Jupiter.
Pirate Au
(Drabble 2 slides this out and hides back under my rock)
Tap, tap, tap went Demencia's fingers on the massive glass tank The Captain now had in his cabin quarters, after all this is Black Hat, he can do as he pleases.
We're not exactly going to question him are we, not when he can rip your spine out your arse and the crew have witness him doing just that when a navy officer dared to give him lip, it is safe to say no other fleet have attempted to stop him.
"You should be happy the Captain gave you an aquarium, could have been thrown back into the sea, now you have the attention of a king!"
Demencia tapped the glass again, wanting him to react or swim, something!
"Why you laying there, curled up in a corner like a shrivelled worm."
Every time she made those sounds his tail twitched, his tank was bare, made of four walls, him and salt water its only contents, a porthole that looked out on his vast home, making this imprisonment all the more cruel.
To be kept from its cooling depths and sail amongst fellow sea creatures, of course he was going to lay down if only to keep it out of sight.
Happy indeed!
They chose to be on this watery landscape, he did not choose to be in this blasted box!
He was not one of your common merfolk who lived in a glittering city of pearls and lights, the merman lived in a deeper part of the ocean where the sun barely touched him.
Of course if any of these damn morons had any idea about his kind they would have known that!
"Hey fish man, what do you call yourself?"
Hands fisted and against his head, pressing them tighter against the bag, he could understand her language, speak it even but he had no reason to oblige an answer, but damn it if she tapped that glass. One. More. Time....
He would throw himself out just to claw her to pieces with little care for consequences.
Gills at his ribs flared and relaxed, sighing, this trap was bigger than it looked, he'd tried swimming from one end to the other but an enchantment has been placed on the aquarium so that it never ended.
Something told him he that he was going to be akin to a pet until his captor grew bored and decided he would be more useful as fish fillets.
Tap. Tap. TAP.
Pupil's becoming slits he rushed her, seeing red wanting nothing more than to rip her to pieces, shoulder crashing against the glass, yes it hurt, no doubt would even bruise, but that didn't matter just as he was preparing to spring out, Black Hat walked in and grimaced at the scene before him.
"How many times have I told you, not to enter my room without permission girl."
His prize was clearly agitated, usually he could care less if Demencia vexed someone so they lost their mind, but this was one he wanted to preserve.
She had barely reacted at their guests threat display, being around her Captain had desensitised her to such things and was merely watching out of curiosity.
"What? I was just simply curious about your new pet, I bet you wonder what he looks like under that bag."
Demencia shrugged, giggling as she tapped the glass again, grinning as the merman pounded his fists against the glass in frustration, letting out another screech.
Black Hat had, had enough of this, picking up the silver serving dome on his table from last nights meal and putting it over Demencia's head, clanging a spoon on its surface until she got the bloody message.
"Owwww you know my ears are more sensitive...ohhh...I see."
Peeking out from under the dome, casting a look at the merman whose arms were folded and while his face was hidden it was clear he was thinking; See how you like it.
"Yes exactly, now I would prefer if our guest was not driven insane by your doings, we can converse later, but for now this is the company I seek."
"But sir, you have him in your room, he will always be here!"
"Hmm yes, might even stop you entering and trying to smell my clothes."
"Pffft what do you mean try?"
The pirate King inhaled deeply, no he was not going to snap, top lip rippling in a soft grow which of course it would only make her eyes light up excitedly, though out the corner of his own he noticed his treasure watching only to hastily swim back and curl up on the aquarium floor once more.
Placing a claw under the lizard girls chin he purred
"You would not want to disappoint your Captain now would you?"
"Of course not!"
"So behave, check the rounds and see where that bear of a man Fives is with my breakfast."
"Yes Captain Black Hat!"
She saluted him running off absolutely giddy, she would never wash her face again, well she would because Hat would insist but for now NEEEEVERRR.
When Demencia was out and door closed a long sigh escaped him, pinching the bridge of where a nose would be.
"You know for a mad woman, she really is the most reliable of my crew."
With hands clasped behind his back he walked forward, stopping in front of the merman, observing the creature before him, fins swaying gently, gills parting with each breath, taking in how scales met flesh.
Really quiet a fetching thing if he did say so himself.
"My name is Black Hat, though I am sure you already know that, there are few who do not."
Casually looking over his claws as he spoke, because of course everyone knew who he was right, so this creature should be impressed by his name alone.
Materialising a chair from nothing the demon sat, leaning back in that chair we all know he has in his office in cannon verse, cause come on that is a noice chair!
One leg over the other, elbows resting on its arms, steepling his fingers, odd indeed, most would be quivering now...so there must be something wrong.
In their shared silence, wood was creaking, ocean waves lapping and the chatter of men could be heard outside, he continued staring through clear water making a small hmm sound in though and suggesting
"Perhaps you are sick, I am quite knowledgeable in mermailian anatomy...though to be fair I have only used such information to kill your kind."
Oh, now that had a reaction, the creatures tail suddenly appeared to have circular patterning of bright sky blue rings, no doubt they would look marvellous in the dark.
Body tensing as he curled into himself, spines raising as a defence mechanism, which meant from what he could see this merman was both predator and prey within his own habitat, Hat could also not deny he was somewhat curious as to what this creature looked like under that bag.
So he wasn't sick...oh ho he was pissed at him!
A smirked formed on the demons features, chin on hand cooing teasingly
"Ohh is someone sulking, really you should be honoured that I am giving you so much attention."
So this land walker really was so arrogant to assume everyone needed his praise!
There he'd been swimming around , simply curious about the oddity way up high an peculiar power surge and of course being somewhat of an explorer himself had ventured to where it was coming from only to get caught in that bloody storm.
So really what it was really this Captain wanted him to acknowledge his existence, perhaps this would be amusing after all.
Unfurling himself the merman, stretched arching his back, this display might have been more pleasing without the mask but none the less this Hat fellow seemed to be showing signs of interest.
Rolling on his side head propped up with a hand, he knew body language could speak more than enough.
Inside he was feeling absolutely smug as shit as that single eye watched his other hand, claws caressing along his hip, subtlety taking up the remaining dead scales, either way Black still seemed focused.
Black Hat's mouth suddenly went dry, well that was unexpected, loosening the frills at his throat, curious as to what he'd do next, that beautiful tail, rising and falling gently much like a contented feline.
"Are you trying to entice me, you are doing a poor job of it."
The demon scoffed, despite the fact it was a blatant lie.
Pushing himself from the tank floor he swam closer so that the Captain could admire him more.
Perhaps more than this dark being expected because he could not help but chuckle, noticing how he'd tried to cover up the fact he'd looked down.
Black Hat cleared his throat, nostrils flaring just enough to actually be seen momentarily and disappearing once more, this certainly was a turn of events, also one would be blind not to notice this was one of the finer specimens of Mermailian kind, a little fun just might be in order.
Small dull thuds on the glass took him from his thoughts at first the demon wondered what on Earth he was doing before noticing there was a purpose and a pattern as it kept repeating.
Was it his name?
He flipping well hoped so!
Flug, his name was FLUG!
Right then, well if Flug wanted to play...
Standing, adjusting his coat and belt, Black Hat walked up steps that did not exist, leaning an arm over Flug's tank, voice husky and beckoning him to the surface, grinning as he seemed to have learned that it was best to be obedient to him.
Flug hesitated a moment, feigning at being coy, looking down and shyly coming up.
"Come to me my pet."
The merman paused, so his voice might have had a genuine effect on him, leaving a warmth in his belly he'd not been expecting.
Its tone making his ear fins want to spread out and take in the seductive tune all the more while damning the gentle flush of purple in his pale skin.
A long claw extended, hooking in one of the ties in the merman's mask, Flug could not deny even in all his stubbornness they were beautiful hands.
"So, we finally have a name for you, Flug."
Silence fell upon them once more, holding his hand to rest his cloth covered cheek against his palm, trilling softly, keeping a watch on Hat, moving in closer.
The Captain loosened a tie, taking in how those fine peacock coloured scales dusting along side his throat disappeared continued on under the cloth.
They had forgotten everything around them, or so at least Hat believed.
Flug felt the sharp tip of his thumb at his chin ready to lift his mask and saw his moment.
His other hand had been concealing the dead scales he'd been peeling off earlier, a concoction similar to shredded soggy snake skin, clumped and pulpy, he of course threw it straight at the demons face, making a nasty thick squelching sound.
"Why you little-"
Flug saw how quickly his eye turned from white to black, its pupil crimson and despite his fear, flicked the last little piece that remained on his finger tips at him, if he was going to die, damn the consequences, but what actually happened was far from expected.
The last piece had landed in his mouth completely throwing him off his rage to a frozen silence before he started laughing
"Well played little fish."
His captor was laughing!
That was not the reaction he'd wanted at all, huffing and tying his bag back up he went back to sulking in the corner.
"Complain all you want my little scaley beauty, you are not going any where."
Only this case if Flug was standing he would be much taller than him, not that Hat was going to admit that any time soon.
A few moments later Demencia was bringing in his breakfast, thankfully he'd cleaned off all the much his pet had thrown at him.
" So did you have an interesting conversation?"
She enquired cheerfully.
"I managed to pull a name from him."
"Oh what is it?"
"Flug, his name is Flug."
Meet the blogger!
Tumblr media
(Picture: me saying so long to Amethyst on her adoption day).
As my introduction says, my name is Dani and I’m a Certified Feline Training and Behavior Specialist. I’m 29 years old, I’ve been married to my husband for a little over four years (together for over nine), and I live in New Jersey in the USA.
Granted, twenty years ago, nine-year-old Dani would not have even considered this career path or passion. As an adult, I was diagnosed with ASD. A lot of my childhood clicked into place after that diagnosis. I thought something was wrong with me, but could never put my finger on what. Turns out nothing was wrong with me, we just didn’t know that I had to do things a little differently.
From a young age, I was introduced to theatre. I was in my first show at 6 years old, and was pretty much on the stage at every opportunity after that. I loved singing and acting. I went to a Performing Arts vocational High School, and had amazing opportunities to learn more about theatre and performing than I could ever dream of.
Unfortunately, the high school also taught me that while I loved theatre and I loved performing, I would not cut it in the professional world. I was big, and I was always big. I wasn’t the look most people went for. I had a low voice. Nobody wanted Ethel Mermans anymore, they wanted Kristen Chenoweths. This was, admittedly, not my own conclusion. I had a lot of teachers and special guest artists tell me that I “had a face for stage management” and if I didn’t like that “that’s just how the business was”.
So theatre, while a wonderful passion of mine, was not a good, viable source of income.
Tumblr media
(Picture: myself, playing Dolly Tate in a local production of “Annie Get Your Gun”).
So, going into college, I was at a loss for what to do. I had studied a few languages. I took Spanish for several years in middle and high schools, but my love of video games and anime brought me to study Japanese in high school (where it was offered as a class), and in college, I turned to Chinese. But the aspect of leaving the country to pursue the education scared me. While yes, many people successfully leave their country in order to study, and many people even stay where they study, I was hesitant.
I had met who would eventually become my husband. With anxiety and health issues, leaving the country wasn’t exactly feasible. I studied American Sign Language for a brief period, but a long-lived arm/hand injury made me unable to move some of my fingers, and I was not a viable candidate for a translator.
Tumblr media
(Picture: me and Garnet, a foster kitten from my most recent foster litter).
Now, my love of felines seems a bit out of left field. From an early age I loved animals. My parents did not like, or know how to care for cats, and my grandmother only tended to vast outdoor colonies that she would let inside her house. My experience with cats had only been these feral and semi-feral cats who hissed and would swat at tiny child Dani. I didn’t understand, and the people in my life ALSO did not understand, so my opinion of cats was, unfortunately, tarnished.
I grew up with a dog, Muffin, who was a long lived and long loved Bichon. She lived for 16 years, and was my absolute best friend. She even performed in shows with me. As I grew up, I met more animals, loved meeting more animals. My mother kept pushing me towards becoming a veterinarian, but it was not something I was interested in.
Tumblr media
(Picture: me with Muffin, taking her down the street to the beach before she passed away).
I really didn’t know where that left me, though. I tried going to school to become a medical receptionist, but my husband and I moved, leaving me with half a completed certification.
Then we met Heimdall. And while I had grown to adore cats over the years, learning more about them from friends with cats and more popular television shows about cats, I was smitten and went headfirst into cat guardianship the same way I go into everything - with my whole heart and no looking back.
Cats. Were (and are). FASCINATING.
There was so much information out there about cats! How so much of the things I’d been told as a child were so untrue. I loved every moment of it. I loved my cats, I loved learning about cats, I loved spending time with cats. I was so over the moon happy and fulfilled learning about them that it was the first time in my life that I felt like I knew what I was doing.
Tumblr media
(Picture: me and my hedgehog Guy Fieri.)
So I enrolled with the Animal Behavior Institute, worked hard, studied harder, immersed myself in helping cats at my local shelter, and found what I absolutely knew I loved to do beyond all else. I could still do theatre on the weekends. I could still study languages in my spare time. But working with cats was never working. It was enriching. It was worth while. It fed my soul.
Tumblr media
(Picture: me with my cat Seymour).
So what do I do now? I work an office job during the day because good grief caring for five cats is pricey and I want them to live their best lives.
I play video games all the time. Currently playing Katamari Damacy Reroll on the Switch, along with re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-replaying the original Mass Effect series. One of my favorite non-cat related books is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: And Other Lessons From The Crematory by Caitlin Doughty (proceed with caution Googling that, it discusses human death in a very matter-of-fact way and it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s perfectly okay. If you’re okay with it, though, check it out).
I have seven tattoos and I’m in the market for at least four more (for the cats, Simcoe and Citra are a package deal), and I’m just artist browsing at the moment. I run a regular D&D campaign, and I’ve been DMing for about two years, first with Pathfinder and now with D&D 5th edition.
Kurukero for ship meme
Bless you anon, no one ever asks me about my garbage frog OTP
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter: Kururu as the the hunter who uses brains and really weird inventions to catch werewolves in order to experiment on them, kind of half-assedly looking for a cure while mostly just amusing himself with wild and cruel experiments. Keroro as the one werewolf who manages to evade his traps every time, not because he’s smart or even trying to, but because he somehow makes all of them break, and it’s driving Kururu insane. During the day, Keroro ‘runs’ (his dad owns the place) the machine parts store where Kururu gets most of the parts for his traps and inventions. Neither of them recognize each other though, cause Kururu never sees Keroro transform and Kururu wears protective gear while hunting so Keroro doesn’t recognize him.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman: Keroro as the world’s worst fisherman who can’t catch anything cause he’s impatient and loud and just absolutely the worst at literally every part of fishing, especially cause he always complains about how he’d much rather be inside where it’s cool rather than out trying and failing to catch fish. Kururu is less a merman and more of a malicious siren who loves to toy with the fishermen who come to his area by messing with their traps and lines and sicking sharks on them. When Keroro shows up to his area, he finds that none of his usual tricks are worth it cause Keroro just naturally fucks everything up himself. Completely surprising himself, and not like he would ever admit it, Kururu actually starts helping Keroro, to the point of putting fish on his hook so he can at least feel like he’s accomplishing something. (It’s a coin toss as to whether or not Keroro actually knows what’s going on, really up to what people wanna see)
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar: Once again, Keroro is a witch who is just, really, really bad at literally everything when he puts effort into it, so he just prefers to laze about and get nothing actually done. Kururu is his feline familiar who likes to laugh at his misfortune and cause trouble for him so he can never completely relax. Feat. witch Dororo with canine familiar Giroro (who Kururu loves to rile up as well), and witch hunter Tamama who develops an unrequited crush on his ‘prey’ Keroro
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict: Keroro works the graveyard shift at a 24 hours coffee shop, cause he’s really bad at his job but Giroro’s dad is the owner and ave him the job as a favor to Keroro’s dad, so he works when almost no one comes in. Except one night Kururu, a ‘mad’ inventor from the local mysterious lab, comes in cause he ran out of coffee in his lab and no place else is open. He said it was just gonna be the once, especially because the coffee really wasn’t any good at all, but he found Keroro’s oddness interesting and decided to keep coming, especially since literally no one else is around (except for occasionally Giroro and Dororo who come in to make sure Keroro isn’t destroying the place). At the same time, Keroro is fascinated by Kururu who does’t say much except for really weird and mildly threatening things, and actually starts to try and learn how to make good coffee so he isn’t coming in for nothing (not realizing that he’s the reason Kururu keeps coming back).
who’s the professor and who’s the TA: Keroro is a professor …. somehow?? He is, not actually a good teacher at all, but he’s passionate enough about his subject and a good enough bullshitter that somehow he got hired (and his students aren’t gonna complain about what’s essentially a blow off class). Kururu is the very reluctant TA (his best and only friends pushes him into doing it, cause they thought he could have a really good future as a teacher with all of his knowledge to share) and he is in no way happy to be saddled with the useless and lazy Keroro who he sees as nothing more than a moron who somehow managed to trick the administration into giving him this job. In turn, Keroro is annoyed that he’s been given a TA at all, seeing this as a threat to his cushy, lazy situation, except, he notices how lonely Kururu seems, how he doesn’t really talk much to each people and doesn’t really interact with the students much at all. As a result, Keroro starts trying to implement group work in the class in order to force Kururu into interacting with other people, being forced to actually put forth the work and effort in order to come up with this work and actually turning into a semi-good teacher. As a result of this, though annoyed that Keroro keeps trying to gt him to socialize more, Kururu is surprised to find that he’s actually not that much of a moron and that he actually really is extremely smart regarding his subject. (I hadn’t a clue what the subject is, any ideas?)
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss): Dumb and reckless knight Keroro who goes forth to rescue the kidnapped prince Kururu from the dragon that took him, both cause he wants the reward money for doing so and cause no one else will do it since Kururu was always super unlikable. Except, when he manages to find the dragon, he realizes that Kururu is the dragon, that he fucked around with some magic to turn himself into one so he didn’t have to deal with everyone’s shit anymore and can hide away with his books in peace, with no fear of people bothering him. Feeling kind of bad for him, coming to the personal conclusion that he absolutely must be lonely, Keroro starts to bring him books and interesting things as often as possible, at some points even bringing some of his own friends, all to show Kururu that he doesn’t have to hide away from society in the form of a dragon. Kururu at first is annoyed with the dumb knight who keeps bothering him, but seeing Keroro’s continued persistence at trying to help him (though he doesn’t think he needs any help) Kururu slowly starts to feel a sort of affection for the dumb knight.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent: Cold Kururu, the freshman biology teacher known for being a ruthless and hard grader who gives little to no help, is trying to explain to Keroro that his ‘precious little angel’ is dumb as a rock and that’s why they keep failing their tests, but Keroro just refuses to hear it. Cue a whole years worth of them going back and forth with Kururu’s continued efforts to prove to Keroro that his kid is dumb leading to him actually putting forth the effort to help them and finding that they actually start to improve in their class, with Keroro seeing this and deciding (in his own mind, as he does) that it was all just an elaborate act to help his child prove themselves. Cue Keroro now trying to do everything to show his gratitude to Kururu by bringing him gifts and inviting him to outings, catching the biology teacher off guard and unintentionally gaining his affections.
who’s the writer and who’s the editor: Keroro as the fanciful and idealistic writer who, while having really great ideas and being great at world building, has atrocious grammar and spelling. Kururu as his ever tortured editor who only keeps the job cause he’s secretly got a big ole gay crush on Keroro. One night, after the release of Keroro’s newest book sees it being a huge hit (after Kururu had to spend several all-nighters just to make sure it was legible on time) Keroro takes him out drinking to celebrate. Cue the two getting drunk and then waking up the next morning to find themselves in bed together. whoops.
How to make a sexy sea monster and other 'Shape of Water' secrets revealed! (exclusive)
yahoo
Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fairy tale The Shape of Water represents a breakthrough in human-fish relations. That’s not just because this lovingly crafted homage to classic ‘50s creature features is up for 13 Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. It also pushes the envelope well past love stories like Splash and The Little Mermaid, where men and mermaids enjoyed relatively chaste romances. In contrast, The Shape of Water’s lovers — mute janitor, Elisa (Sally Hawkins, a Best Actress nominee) and South American river god (Doug Jones) — get hot and heavy during the course of the film, instantly making them one of the most memorable interspecies couples in movie history.
Del Toro recognized early on in the production process that his love story hinged on audiences finding the Fish-Man as attractive as Elisa does. So, he devoted more than a year — and hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own funds — towards sculpting a version of the creature that was, to put it bluntly, a total stud. “It needed to be very attractive, a creature you could fall in love with,” the director remarks in this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that Yahoo Entertainment is premiering today. (Watch the video above.) Del Toro handed that challenge off to top creature designer, Mike Hill of Legacy Effects, who built a suit for Jones that was further enhanced in post-production by Dennis Berardi, head of the visual effects company Mr. X, which oversaw the effects work for The Shape of Water.
Tumblr media
Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones as the lovers in ‘The Shape of Water’ (Photo: Fox Searchlight/Courtesy Everett Collection)
The technique was pure hybrid,” Berardi explains to Yahoo Entertainment in a separate interview. “Generally speaking, when you see the body and head movements of the Fish Man—or the asset as we called him — that’s Doug Jones in a suit. But whenever you see him underwater, then he’s animated. I would also say that every single shot where you have the creature onscreen, the eyes and brow area are digital, because the way the mask worked, the eyes were a thick resin plug that didn’t articulate. Our methodology was to work from the eyes out, preserving as much of Doug’s performance as possible. But every single shot has varying degrees of visual effects in it, from micro-expressions like eye blinks to full-body animation.”
Unfortunately for Berardi, visual effects was one of the few Oscar categories in which The Shape of Water missed out on a nomination, with nods instead going to Blade Runner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, Kong: Skull Island, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and War for the Planet of the Apes. But he and his team absolutely share a role in the movie’s success, infusing the creature’s costume design (which is up for an Oscar) with additional life. Having collaborated with Del Toro on both Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak, Berardi has regularly enjoyed a front-row seat to the director’s creative process. Read on for additional trade secrets behind The Shape of Water and its strapping Fish-Man.
It started with a sketch. Berardi’s first glimpse of The Shape of Water‘s aquatic heartthrob was as a two-dimensional sketch in one of the notebooks that Del Toro always has on hand to jot down ideas and images as they pop into his brain. (Some of those notebooks have been published in anthology collections.) “He showed me a sketch of their embrace,” the effects supervisor remembers, referring to an early version of the clinch between Elisa and the “asset” that appears on the movie’s poster. “It was such a romantic image, and he told me, ‘This is a movie that’s in love with love.’ You had a creature that had to be a leading man that Elisa had to fall in love with and that the audience had to fall in love with. He told us right at the beginning that this wasn’t a monster — it’s an intelligent being with a soul, and eyes that had to be soulful and deep.”
The creature also had to be a top-notch swimmer whose movements read as pure poetry in the water. To aid with that, Berardi had his team study Olympians like Michael Phelps as a starting point. “Those guys are powerful and swim somewhat gracefully, but nothing as graceful as what Guillermo really wanted. So then we looked at dolphins, sea lions, otters and seals, and settled on this hybrid of a humanoid swimming, with a bit of a dolphin kick. Seals actually became a lot of inspiration as well, because they move slipstream through the water very gracefully.”
Junk in the trunk In one of The Shape of Water‘s standout sequences, Elisa and her lover act consummate their powerful attraction in a bathroom that she transforms into a makeshift water tank. It’s an erotically-charged moment and del Toro takes full advantage of his R-rating, allowing the two to see, and touch, each other’s naked bodies like any homosapien couple would. Boundary-pushing as this scene may be, it stops just short of the final frontier: merman genitalia. And that’s just fine for Berardi, who would have been responsible for helping imagine what the creature’s junk might look like. “Guillermo’s got too much taste for that,” Berardi remarks with a laugh, pointing out that Elisa and her friend Zelda (Octavia Spencer) instead discuss her lover’s size after their intimate encounter. “His inspiration for the movie was when he was six years old watching Creature from the Black Lagoon and hoping that the creature gets the girl.”
That’s a note that del Toro passed along to Hill as well. “This thing has to be attractive to a woman,” the creature designer remarks in the above clip. “My directive was that I wanted to make him handsome.” For his part, Jones clearly appreciated the matinee idol physique that Hill crafted for his aquatic alter ego. “My lips are a little fuller, there’s a strong jawline and the body they sculpted on me is very athletic. He’s handsome in a fish-like way.”
Tumblr media
The shape of (digital) water If the Fish-Man was a hybrid of practical and digital effects, the water he calls home is almost entirely digital with one notable exception — the aforementioned love scene in Elisa’s bathroom. “That’s the only scene where we had the actors in water, ever,” Berardi reveals. “We had a water tank that we built and submerged the bathroom set, with the actors, in the tank. It was done in such a safe way that they could just be hovering around the surface with footholds and handholds. They’d film for 20 or 30 seconds, and then come back up easily because the water level was just above their heads. Sally and Doug were both game.” Everywhere else, though, the H20 was all CGI, and even with all the advancements that have been made since The Perfect Storm — the movie that Berardi cites as a breakthrough for digital water effects — simulating water is still one of the most difficult jobs for an effects house.
Interestingly, the most challenging shot involved another tank of sorts, the iron lung capsule that serves as the creature’s prison as he’s transported from South America to the Baltimore research facility where the film’s events unfold. “There was no water in that capsule,” Berardi says. “It would have been way too unsafe to have Doug in there. But we had to see water sloshing around through the glass while the asset is in there. The creature also had to slam his hand on the glass, so his digital hand would have to come through the digital water and hit the glass. All of that is 3D and volumetrically rendered. That was the shot that kept me up at night.”
Tumblr media
Richard Jenkins and Jones in The Shape of Water (Photo: Fox Searchlight/Everett Collection)
Here kitty, kitty Cat fanciers will be happy to hear that no real felines were harmed in the making of The Shape of Water. The same can’t be said for the computer-generated cat that the creature chows down on while hiding out with Elisa and her friend, Giles (Richard Jenkins). And the Fish-Man is a messy eater, too, getting blood all over the floor and himself. That may sound like a big turnoff, but del Toro felt it was crucial to showcase his hero in his less glamorous moments. “Guillermo didn’t want to make a traditional Beauty and the Beast-type story where the beast can’t really be himself. He’s eloquent, strong and heroic, yes, but he also needs protein!”
For the first part of the scene, Jones worked with an on-set cat wrangler to provoke a flesh-and-blood feline into a hissing fit. When the time came for the creature to open the cat’s head like a Pez dispenser, Berardi’s team took over. “We put a green sock puppet in Doug’s hands, replaced that with a digital cat and then severed the head. We went through about 25 iterations about what the cross section of the neck needed to look like, and showed Guillermo the grossest ones we could devise — anatomically correct with the spinal cord, nerve endings and all that stuff. We totally went there with it. That was also a moment where we took over Doug’s head and did it digitally: we fluttered the gills and had water spray off of them. That was probably one of the most fun things for us to animate.”
The Shape of Water is currently playing in theaters and available on digital services. The film arrives on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 13.
2017 Annual List of Favorite Film Experiences
Tumblr media
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
With each passing year, I find it harder to keep up with new release films, as well as the growing queue of ones on my “To See” list. On the other hand, it feels like quality films are sequestered till the end of the year (nothing against summer blockbusters, but with a few exceptions, many are forgotten by the time you get back to your car) and the growing appeal and abundance of quality television fostered by its broader canvas for in-depth storytelling and character development is another distraction.
But that brings me to one of my favorite things about the holiday season in Los Angeles. The last six weeks or so of the year is filled with many appealing options as films jockey for exposure ahead of the awards season. And I have a great deal of appreciation and gratitude (and a bit of jealousy) for the many artists and others who have the passion to make these visions come to life for us to enjoy.
All the best for a wonderful 2018 and hope that you get a chance to see some of the films below that moved me in some way, sometimes filling me with emotion or awe, or provoking long-lasting thoughts, or just trigger the desire to re-experience and see it again. So, here they are, in no particular order.
Cheers, Ed
P.S.–I’ve gotten many requests to also review favorite meals of the year, so that might come in another post. :)
Indelible Coming of Age Tales
Call Me By Your Name — Northern Italy, summer, 1983. Having read the André Aciman novel, this was my most anticipated film of 2017. And it did not disappoint. This beautifully told and lushly shot coming of age romance features a remarkable and revelatory (and perhaps best of 2017) performance by newcomer Timothée Chalamet (also in Lady Bird), who achingly captures the universal yearning, passion, heartache, and torment of first love. Kudos also to Armie Hammer and director Luca Guadagnino. While many moments stand out, including the empathetic and compassionate speech by father Michael Stuhlberg (also in Shape of Water) that is the dream of every LGBT kid, it’s the minutes-long reactive close-up on Chalamet as the credits roll and song of yearning plays that devastatingly endures. My favorite of 2017.
Lady Bird — Sacramento, 2002. A semi-autobiographical coming of age in the suburbs tale featuring the humorous, turbulent, and affecting relationship between mother and daughter by Greta Gerwig in her directorial debut. With a fabulous performance by Saoirse Ronan as the head-strong teen who calls herself Lady Bird, a terrific Laurie Metcalf as her mom, and HW alum Beanie Feldstein ’11 as her best friend, this is the rare comedy that is smart, witty, and endearing.
Compelling Period Piece True Stories
Dunkirk — Dunkirk, France, 1940. A visually and viscerally compelling piece of filmmaking about the miraculous evacuation of 300,000 British troops from the doomed beach at Dunkirk, masterfully crafted by director Christopher Nolan via three intertwined timeframes (a week on the beach, a day by sea, and an hour in the air) that intersect and fold back and ultimately, come together in the end.
The Post — Washington, DC, 1971. Spielberg + Streep + Hanks = a highly timely and relevant telling of the Washington Post’s saga to publish the Pentagon Papers. Resonant on so many levels with urgent themes of today—the need for a free press, the role of women in a man’s world, and a judicial branch independent from an overreaching executive branch—all told with briskly entertaining and thrilling pace.
All the Money In The World — UK/Italy, 1973. I’ll admit that I was initially attracted to this pic to see how director Ridley Scott erased Kevin Spacey and recast Christopher Plummer in the role of billionaire J. Paul Getty and reshot major portions of his film six weeks before its release date. Hats off to him for pulling off a very engaging thriller depicting the notorious kidnapping of Getty’s grandson. Michelle Williams is spot-on as the mother who goes toe-to-toe with her infamously frugal father-in-law who refuses to pay ransom for her child.
Dark Master Works By An Irish Playwright and a Black Comedian
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri — Ebbing, MO, present day. Loved this very dark dramedy whose story emanates from a tragic event in a small town. There’s plenty of levity and wonderfully drawn characters via Martin McDonagh’s clever screenplay that mixes revenge, redemption, and moral ambiguity, featuring a trio of tremendous performances by raging mother of deceased raped daughter Frances McDormand, small town police chief and target of McDormand’s ire Woody Harrelson, and racist, violent, alcoholic mama’s boy police officer Sam Rockwell.
Get Out — Suburban countryside, present day America. A creepy, twisted, funny, scary, and subversive version of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” crossed with a little bit of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” for the post-Obama era. A brilliant, provocative, and unnerving nexus of sophisticated horror, comedy, and extremely biting social satire by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut.
Strange and Untraditional Love Stories
Phantom Thread —London, circa 1950s. I love Paul Thomas Anderson, and he’s made one strange but riveting movie here. A gorgeous Jonny Greenwood score swings from elegantly jazzy to intensely haunting, setting the mood for this darkly humorous film featuring hard to describe relationships (I hesitate to call it a love story) between an obsessively demanding and fastidious fashion designer (Daniel Day-Lewis supposedly in his last film role), his muse, and his ever-lurking sister/business partner and their respective emotional/psychological (and ultimately perverse) gamesmanship. And one may not listen to water-pouring or toast-buttering, or mushroom omelet eating in the same way again.
The Shape of Water — Baltimore, circa 1962. Mix in a large dose of Cold War thriller and Creature from the Black Lagoon, plus a little Busby Berkeley, and you either get a political allegory (marginalized “others” whether mute, black, gay, or non-human vs. the Man) or romantic fairy tale. Leave it to Guillermo del Toro to bring us the more “romantic” one in this strange love stories category, an oddly beautiful and enchanting interspecies romance between two mute and isolated beings, one a cleaning woman (a wonderful Sally Hawkins) and the other a Creature From the Black Lagoon-inspired merman kept in a top secret government facility. Arguably, the “monster” in this story is the intensely sadistic government agent played with gusto by Michael Shannon.
Bizarre Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction Tales
I, Tonya —  Portland, OR, 1994. A stellar Margot Robbie plays the hard scrabble, trailer-trash, and ultimately disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in this unbelievably crazy but true story of her life leading up to the infamous incident before the 1994 Winter Olympics. Told in zippy mockumentary style that is fun to watch, Allison Janney as her zany, abusive mother leads a supporting cast of inept characters involved in Tonya’s dysfunctional life. Directed by Craig Gillispie who also directed the offbeat gem, Lars and the Real Girl.
The Disaster Artist — Hollywood, 2003. Another bizarre, but true real life story about the enigmatic writer/director Tommy Wiseau who made one of the most absurdly bad films ever that eventually turned into a cult classic (The Room). Humorously portrayed by James Franco, who also directed this offbeat but unexpectedly poignant movie about making a movie, though it’s ultimately more about the importance of friendship, having dreams, and America’s fascination with celebrity and movies. (And the side-by-side comparison of scenes from the actual The Room and recreations in Franco’s film are hysterical.)
Docs About Felines and Cheating Russians
Kedi — Yes, this a documentary about cats, but it’s not just about cats. Rather it’s a meditative and heartwarming look at the community of felines that inhabit the streets of Istanbul, delving into their centuries-long symbiotic relationship with humans in the old city. The city is teeming with cats that are neither feral or domestic, each with different personalities and lives they share with the people they adopt. And therein lies the heart of this film, as the locals share their bonds and therapeutic experiences with these complex creatures, ranging from the mundane to the profound.
Icarus – Putin + mysterious deaths + performance-enhancing drug conspiracy = A fascinating and crazy documentary that plays like a spy thriller. It starts out as an odd personal experiment by the filmmaker/amateur cyclist mimicking Lance Armstrong’s doping regimen, but through sheer dumb luck and serendipity, he develops a friendship with Gregory Rodchenkov, the affable, eccentric, and charismatic camera-loving head of Russia’s Anti-Doping Lab…and, as it turns out, the country’s mastermind behind its decades-long state-sponsored doping program. It then becomes a terrifying race to uncover the world’s biggest sports conspiracy, implicating everybody including the Russian president (resulting in the NY Times exposé) while trying to save whistle-blower Rodchenkov’s life from the clutches of Putin.
Docs about Life and Death
Obit. —While it may sound morbid, this behind-the-scenes look at the NY Times’ obituary staff writers is enlightening and fascinating, and in fact, quite lively (even its peek into the “morgue,” the paper’s clipping archive). Beyond celebrities and notables, who makes the editorial cut in the pages of the NY Times obit section? And how does one get appropriately celebrated in death, warts and all. Now you can find out.
Chasing Coral – A wake-up call to the accelerating world-wide death of entire coral reef ecosystems by “coral bleaching.” This remarkably emotional doc follows a team of biologists, including a self-proclaimed “coral nerd” in a race against time to document this die-off with powerful visual evidence, and the result is an inspirational eco drama that moves you to act before it’s too late.
Others Worth Mentioning
Baby Driver (the soundtrack and editing alone are worth the thrilling 112 minutes of this stylish heist story about a young getaway driver); It (I don’t generally like horror films, but this retelling of Stephen King’s classic was one of the most engaging and well told of its genre); Star Wars: The Last Jedi (my favorite of the series); Loving Vincent (every frame of the film was hand-painted in the style of Van Gogh); Mudbound; Spider-Man: Homecoming (loved Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker); Beach Rats; The Big Sick; War for the Planet of the Apes;The Only Living Boy in New York; Wonder Woman; Spielberg; Battle of the Sexes; Stronger
