Oh bro here we go...

1- 3 things you like about your fandom:

1.1- It has a lot of content!

1.2- You can experiment and play with many characters and concepts, there are no limits!

1.3- it has a lot of nice and talented people!

2- A headcanon you where not sure about first but fandom made you change your mind:

Mmmmm... not sure about this one. I think I used to Headcanon Amon as Asexual but thanks to some nice mutuals now I can see him bisexual.

3- A character that fandom made you appreciate:

Asami and Katara. Before I get in here I was neutral about all the characters (of course my three main blorbos are the exceptions), but with the right fics and art I could connect with them a little bit better.

4- Say something nice about a ship you don't ship;

Not into Korrasami really, but if there's one thing I can't deny is that the ship has good artists, (haven't read fics but I guess there are good writers too).

5- A thing you see often in fics:

We collectively refuse to accept when a character we love is dead in canon. (canon is clay and we can shape it into whatever we want).

6- A thing you see often in fan arts:

When we make Korra strong and pretty. Also Yue art, she is so pretty and I heard that if you are a cool artist you have drawn her at least once! (Please don't mind if you haven't drawn her, I am sure your art is great).

7- Tropes you enjoy to read/write/draw:

To draw- arranged marriage, basically any amorralok au where Tarrlok and Amon live, for Azulaang any modern, cute or funny comfort au, (tea or coffee shop, school au, flowershop), and love drawing dirty mechanic/prince Irosami.

I guess any cute, comfort au actually.

To read- Arranged marriage, castaway Amon, equalists plot continuation, GIMEEE.

Also love coffee shop aus and spirit traveling au's for Azulaang.

Irosami is interesting with equalist or spy Asami au's but love some good cute domestic aus.

Basically anything related with spirit travels, equalists continuation, action and fluff included.

8- Something you would like the fandom to love aittle bit more:

Any ship and character that doesn't get as much appreciation as it deserves around the fandom.

9- A ship that it's not your Otp but you ship:

Yuetara, have neglected it WAY too long but whenever I see it I appreciate it.

10- A blog or mutual that has made your experience in fandom better:

Can't name all the people that have made my experience better, fortunately, there have been too many nice mutuals. Do not get too invested in any fandom, it can be overwhelming to deal with too many opinions so it's better to try to be nice and not worry about what the rest could say.

Get 2-5 psychos, (affectionate), and stick together, it will probably help you a lot.

Also, you don't have to like what everyone else does or agree to everything, not everything is made for you or a single person. Keep in mind you will have to learn to cope with the things you dislike.

Finally, look for other activities to entertain yourself, focusing too much in fandom can be bad in the long term.

The Painted Lady Re-Watch

I LOVE THIS EPISODE SO MUCH!!!

I love this episode because it tells us so much about Katara. She's always been sympathetic to people who need help, 'Imprisoned' is another great example of this (& of course this is a consistent character trait, there are plenty of smaller examples, but these are the two big ones that come to mind for me.)

I think 'The Painted Lady' illustrates Katara's intense compassion in a new way though because unlike with 'Imprisoned' she has no connection to these people at all - she just cannot stand to see suffering. I've often called Katara almost dangerously idealistic, & this episode is a big reason I think this is such an important part of her characterization.

Sokka isn't even unreasonable for wanting to push the group along! They have an invasion to plan, after all. And it's not like most people's response to seeing a poor community is automatically like...I have to fix these people's entire life. But Katara can't let this go - even at the expense of their schedule, even if it means lying to her friends. I love her so much for this. She is so incredibly kind & stubborn.

Also - this episode is so hilarious. The boatman with multiple personalities just kills me every single time.

Sokka & Aang's debate about what spirit magic sounds like was really funny. This was another great moment of the two of them just being absolute bros. Boybestfriends, if you will.

Katara is getting +1000 iconic behavior points for lying & tricking everyone so she can help the villagers, & another +1000 for her willingness to blow up a factory. Aang gets +500 for being immediately onboard. Also, I was cracking up at the chase scene. Aang was so funny in this episode. "But I'm the bridge between your world & ours!" killed me. So did Katara's little theatrics of changing her voice to try & trick Aang.

Oh, & another thing - I'm obsessed with how angry Aang got (Aangry, if you will...Ok, I'll see myself out) at the Boatman for not admitting that he & his brothers are all the same person.

AANG WTF IS THAT FACE LMAO

I'm obsessed with everything about this scene:

Katara [Angrily.] No, I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me! [Gets up.] I'm going down to that village, and I am gonna do whatever I can.

[As Katara walks away, Sokka stops her by putting his hand on her shoulder.

Sokka: Wait! I'm coming, too.

Katara: I thought you didn't want to help.

Sokka: You need me, and I will never turn my back on you.

Katara: Sokka, you really do have a heart. [The two hug.]

Aang [Wiping away tears.] He really does have a heart, doesn't he?

[Aang turns to Toph for confirmation. Toph, however, elbows him and he falls off camera with a thump.]

Well, I'd say that pretty much sums up the dynamics at play in the Gaang! Oh, & every member of the Gaang (including Katara) gets another +500 iconic behavior points for their fuckery (Our Flag Means Death reference) with the fake spirit.

It was great to see the Fire Nation soldiers totally punked out. Side note - I noticed there were some lady soldiers. I've now seen a handful of people say that there are no women in the Fire Nation military apart from the Dangerous Ladies, & I believed it. But, actually, there are some in this episode, in the background.

The villagers are kinda idiots huh? Can't believe it took Toph pretending to be part of the crowd to get them to think of the idea to clean the river. Maybe I'm being a little harsh though haha, I guess they are either fire benders or non-benders so it wouldn't be that easy for them. The (actual) Painted Lady though? What a worthless spirit - she never thought about showing up in all that time before when the village needed her, only to thank Katara? Wow ok.

Anyway, this was an excellent episode. It didn't really contribute to the main plot, but often those are my favorite episode - little side adventures that allow for exploration of the characters & their dynamics. This episode is so great. Do you know the Five Man Band trope? Where would you place the Gaang? My friend and I can’t agree if Aang would be The Hero or The Chick lol

Oh sure! This is a fun question. Let’s see!

The original archetypes I believe were:

The Hero, The Lancer, The Big Guy, The Smart Guy, The Chick, (and sometimes The Sixth Ranger).

I prefer the more modern terms which make each role gender neutral and more accurate as not all strong characters are big and the role of “the Chick” can absolutely be a dude:

The Hero/Leader, The Lancer, The Muscle, The Brains, The Heart, (and sometimes still The Sixth Ranger).

In the case of the Gaang, the characters are multi-faceted and complex. They all break out of their archetypes and are fleshed out into fully realized characters. It’s a great strength of ATLA’s writing, but it does make it harder to boil them down to one classification.

Aang could easily work as both The Hero and The Heart, just as Sokka could be both The Leader and The Brains. For the purposes of the narrative, however, Aang is very much positioned as the Hero, and everyone else in the roles around him. So let’s give it a shot!

The Hero: Aang

The Lancer: Zuko

The Brains: Sokka

The Muscle: Toph

The Heart: Katara

The Sixth Ranger: Azula

I know you probably expected it to be Suki (whom I love!!!) but she’s much more of a hero or heart herself. The Sixth Ranger is usually a villain turned good, which is where Zuko would go if he wasn’t The Lancer. So let’s just count “The Search”.

getting into the relationship

oh god

i see him with a friends to lovers thing where he either flirts with you from the moment he meets you or progressively begins to fall for you and is far to flustered to flirt because woah there why are you so beautiful

if its the former, then he’s probably gonna be ‘joking’ for the most part and you know this, so you two are just playfully flirting all the time until one day he realizes that he wants this to be REAL and panics

when you flirt the first time he’s flustered, because he’s really just not used to the same level of forwardness that he has himself, but after a while Sokka is gonna get used to it and he’ll just roll with it

but when he realizes he wants more? he’s gonna be flustered all over again, and he’s probably gonna flirt with you signifigantly less, which is gonna cause you to confront him, much to his dismay, because oh no he’s alone with you-

“oh! haha.. hey y/n. yeah i need to go sharpen my boomerang-”

“sokka that’s not something you can do.”

when you confront him, he’s probably gonna be honest with you and tell you how he feels because he really cares for you and just wants you to calm down because no he does n o t hate you

“uh.. it’s the opposite actually you see-”

if its the latter, he’s gonna go from really calm and chill around you, because of the friendly vibes and such like cracking jokes and such, to a complete and utter mess

you two are really close as friends and that isn’t something he wants to mess up but he’s definitely gonna confess at some point because he’s not one to bottle his emotions up and hates how weird things are between the two of you now that he’s realized he likes you

in general i see sokka as a mess around whoever he likes, until he comes to terms with the fact that he likes them, and this likely won’t take long, he’s pretty in tune with his emotions

he’s not gonna wanna ask you out at first, in all honesty, i see sokka’s whole confidence thing as a facade, because in actuality he has really low self esteem and genuinely sees himself as the “extra” member of team avatar because he lacks bending and everyone around him is so talented that he sometimes forgets he is literally super smart and makes all the plans that save their lives on the daily

just things you are too good for him, especially if you are a bender

if you start hinting that you like him too, he is initially gonna think it is a joke until you start getting bold and then it’s gonna hit him like everyone hits the cabbage man’s cart

i can see either of you confessing first, if Sokka does, he’s probably gonna be really bashful and flustered about it, but he’s also gonna try and act cool because thats like his trademark

if you confess first, he’s gonna be in shock temporarily, but then he’s gonna jump right into things because you like him BACK omgomgomgomg

he’s gonna wanna kiss you right after the confession, and it’ll probably backfire because he got really excited and ended up headbutting you and now you have a bruise forming on your head and a very apologetic sokka oops

in general, quickly recognizes his feelings and confesses shortly after, because he just hates the weird tension even if he thinks he’s the only one feeling it, even though hes NOT

during the relationship

a really attentive boyfriend, you will never feel neglected, he’s a very clingy person who gets intimate with you all the time, so if you like affection you got it

kissing him is nice, he’s good at it 10/10 recommend, always wants to hold you as close as possible, prefers a hand on your hip/lowerback and another on your face or neck to pull you closer

if you don’t like affection, he’ll express his love in other ways

for example, cooking, i see sokka as someone who can either cook REALLY well, or not at all. there is no in between.

genuinely just really wants to make you happy

the type to bully you if you’re in a relationship, pls bully him back, humble this man. he’s gonna roast you but he doesn’t really mean it okay, he’s just doesn’t want things to change between you

loves that his best friend is his lover, would not want it any other way

probably forgets to tell the gaang you are dating and like aang and toph are gonna catch you two kissing or smth and sokka’s just gonna be like oh hey guys and they are both like ???

if you two are together during the war, he’s gonna wanna be by your side like 24/7 because he does not want you to die, like this lowkey stresses him so much that he will subconsciously, when developing battle plans either put you in the safest possible spot or by his side, and its because he has literally lost so many people he’s care for and now he’s distressed

remind him that he matters and is important to the team, because he forget that sometimes and falls into a mood, where he’s all sad and stuff and it just makes you sad so like

tell him he matters, because he does, tell him he’s great even if he can’t bend, and tell him he is a fantastic and brilliant leader, this will serve as an ego boost though so be prepared to humble him

steal his hair ties and do all of us a favor okay, just steal them, burn them because no littering, just make sure he cannot find them! he will walk around with his hair down in confusion, searching for them before he starts the day

speaking of starting the day, you always wake up first, this man is not a morning person and needs his beauty sleep, definitely have a 17 step skin care routine, change my mind, he is big on self care and will make sure you participate with him because he cares about you

speaking of care he knows you so well since you are his s/o so if he notices something is up he will not hesitate to confront you, and will ask if you want solutions or just someone to listen to

prefers solving the problem though

back to mornings, um have fun waking up to sokka with his hair down that sounds HEAVENLY um

mild lok spoilers but sokka ends up chief, and gets involved in politics over time, so he kinda runs out of time for you a bit until he figures out how to organize his time better, then he gets kinda sad, but he still wants to take you out on dates as often as possible ok no more spoilers

so speaking of dates, sokka wants weekly dates, this is a must, does not care if it is a fancy restaurant, cooking at home, or a picnic. he loves picnics most though, and please notice how food is the common factor here

sokka would never cheat on you but if he did he would cheat with food

arguments aren’t rare, but they are mostly over dumb stuff and you both know its dumb stuff so for the most part its a joke, but sometimes someone takes things too far so then apologies are necessary

like actual argument arguments are mostly rare because sokka doesn’t wanna pick fights with you and he’s fairly passive unless he feels really strongly about something

he can be REALLY MEAN THOUGH AND PETTY like wow sokka will go days without talking to you because of a fight

he can and will apologize first when he realizes the toll its taking on your relationship, probably will apologize first

if you catch him being a misogynist put him in his place :)

he thinks you are hot when you are angry and might pick a fight with you just for that reason, pls make out with him

marriage n’ stuff

im still waiting for someone to explain what weddings are like guys please

anyways he’s gonna realize he wants to marry you when he nearly dies and is like wow life is really short also lets discuss him losing all the important people he’s loved in his life one more time, he does not want to lose you!!!

now he’s back to beaming so brightly, and he’s putting the ring on your finger and oh no- he’s passed out. is it from excitement or bloodloss? idk

he also might pass out before hearing you answer and then at the hospital you’re kinda sitting there like, “ARE YOU DUMB STUPID OR DUMB. YOU COULD HAVE DIED.”

and he’s like, “not without hearing your answer” <3<3 heart eyes emojis everywhere

alternatively, he is one of few people i could see having a public proposal, with lots of flowers, a band, fireworks, the whole nine yards

he’s gonna want it flashy

something probably goes wrong and he nearly cries but you say yes anyways and he throws a party after

anyways the actual wedding is preferably public, but if you want a more private one then he does what you want because he loves you most

he is gonna be very active in wedding planning, wants to try the foods and desserts and appetizers and everything especially. wants to do the weird stuff like picking napkins with you and flower arrangements and all that stuff i think this happens idk someone please inform me

this stuff just makes him fall in love with you more tbh, and he’s just so so sure he wants to marry you

his vows will make HIM cry, like he is going to cry when he sees you walk down the aisle, he’s going to cry when he reads his own vows, and he’s going to cry when you read your vows, it doesn’t matter if they are lowkey bad

(I’ve never written Kya’s and Lin’s relationship before, so I may have danced around it for fear of making them ooc😅 But it did give me an opportunity to try my hand at bestmom!Toph)

“One second.”

“You said one second a minute ago.”

“I can’t see what they’re doing if you keep distracting me.”

“You’re the only one of us who can see, you nimrod. Now tell me what the hell they’re doing before I kick you out of this tree.”

“Shhh! I’m trying to—Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!”

“Shush me again, Twinkletoes. See what happens.”

Aang rubbed his now sore ear and shot his best friend through unwilling circumstance a glare that he hoped she could feel. Toph’s blind glare revealed nothing, but her middle fingers thrusted into his face said she ‘heard’ him loud and clear.

Aang almost grumbled an insult, but he remembered to keep it contained to his thoughts.

Toph punched him anyways.

Toph wiggled a bit and readjusted her grip on the tree’s trunk. She held it bodily like a koalapanda refusing to leave its home. Her cheek pressed into the bark and made even a basic sentence a grumpy grumble.

Honestly, she had no one to blame but herself for having to rely on Aang for gathering intel. He told her that teaching Lin seismic sense would come back to bite her one day. Does she ever listen to him? Nooooooo.

“Tell. Me. What’s. Happening.”

“Alright! Alright! They’re...They’re talking. By the water. They’re adorable. I haven’t seen Kya smile that big since...well, I can’t remember since when.”

Toph laughed a little bit. It was a soft, quiet sound that reminded Aang of when they sat in front of the fire for Sokka’s birthday after the kids were all asleep. They reminiscenced for hours about old times.

“...Is Lin smiling, too?”

The wind stirred, but the leaves stayed silent. Aang’s look was probing, and he hoped Toph couldn’t feel it. His friend and practically-sister failed spectacularly to hide how much tighter she clung to the trunk.

Aang hummed and looked through the goggles again. “She was in the beginning.”

“That was an hour ago. I’m talking about right now, damn you.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say she’s ‘smiling’. Her face looks like it forgot how to work.”

“What?”

“Relax. Relax.” Aang forced himself to relax, too. Toph was still raw from watching Lin’s last heartbreak. His old teacher was a boulder, but her daughters made her as soft as river clay and just as at risk of falling apart in careless hands. “It’s a good thing, Toph. I promise.”

Toph’s snarl was fierce but different than normal. It felt like something baring its teeth in defense rather than attack. “If your daughter breaks her heart, I will make your insides your outsides, Twinkletoes.”

Aang hid his laugh in a grin and a neutral hum, and he shifted his weight on their branch. When he looked through the leaves at the fumbling duo dancing around the unspoken question to hold hands, he nearly did a double-take.

He flailed one arm at Toph and stiffened like a pointing hound. “Oh! Oh! Oh! Kya’s laughing! Oh my spirits, she’s adorable—”

“What about Lin?!”

“I’m getting there! I think Lin made a joke. Or, she did it by accident. I haven’t seen anyone turn so red. She’s almost as bad as Katara.”

“...”

Aang glanced at Toph in his periphery. Toph still clung to the trunk, but one of her legs had let go, dangling off their branch like it was trying to find the ground and get a better look at what was happening. The touch of a smile on her face became a ghost before vanishing. Her leg stopped. She hugged the tree like she was holding her mother’s skirts and watching something precious slip away.

“...I hate not being able to see anything.”

Aang patted her back with his free hand. “Don’t worry. I’ll tell your feet everything that happens. Lin is very happy. They both are. Kya is making her laugh, too, from the looks of it. Lin must have said something even funnier because Kya has to use her to keep from falling—oh no.”

“Oh no? What oh no?”

“Um—”

“What oh no, Twinkletoes?”

“Nothing, nothing! Lin just locked up for a second, is all. Kya is still leaning on her and—aaaaand Lin just passed out.”

“What?!”

“It’s okay! Kya just—”

Toph was on the ground and on the run in an instant.

Like a hidden trap, Katara and Bumi sprung from one bush and tackled Toph into another.

Kya looked up, saw nothing, and helped the liquified Lin back to her feet.

“Katara?” Aang hopped down and soundlessly ducked behind the three of them and their bush. “How did—Why are you—?”

Bumi puffed his chest. “We were on an ice column behind the bush! It was my idea. I told Mom that Lin could see us on the ground.”

Katara turned crimson, puffed her cheeks, and collected just enough of her wounded pride to face—but not look—at the grinning child she called her husband.

Aang laughed like he was all-knowing and put his stupid face mere inches in front of hers. “Well, well, well…’Just letting it happen’ are we, sweetie?”

“...Oh, shut up.”

“Shhhh!” Toph hissed. She was lying prone on the grass with her hands, feet, and ear pressed to the ground. “I’m trying to watch!”

What’s your zombie apocalypse survival plan?

Also, who out of the GAang would survive a zombie apocalypse (with and without bending)? Who would die first? Who’d get bitten and not tell anyone? Who would be the first to kill a human because of course people will be terrible during an apocalypse?

Savage! Lovely to see your icon in my asks, and ho boy... this is the question, isn't it? Buckle up...

I personally don't have a survival plan. I've got some friends and family that are preppers and that I'm close enough with that I can take shelter there... Otherwise, I'll probably do the whole run, hide, fight until I got nothing left in the tank lmao.

For the Gaang....

Toph would be able to know who is lying if someone got bit, so she'd call them out if they lied. But they wouldn't lie, they're too honorable. And they would all kill a human if that person tried to attack the group in self-defense. Aang probably wouldn't, but he'd get very close to it.

Aang: He might die first only because of his pacifist take on life. Even the undead life is precious, you know? But he would defend his friends until the bitter end, probably even sacrifice himself to make sure that his buddies got away safely. Maybe even some Avatar State action? lol. If he wasn't a bender? He's a goner... poor cinnamon roll just wouldn't be able to deal.

Toph: She definitely killed the first zombie in the group. I can see her lasting a long time, only because she's pretty no-nonsense. But if she separated from the group, I can see her survival rate decreasing due to the fact that the group balances each other's weaknesses out. And in a modern setting, she'd definitely need friends to help her and protect her since she's blind. She's not useless and has a ton of fight and motivation in her, but it's not an ideal situation.

Sokka: The strategist of the group and the planner, if he bites the dust, things will get disorganized. Sokka is the quiet glue of the zombie apocalypse operation, because he sets itineraries, makes schedules, and has a plan of how to get out of the situation alive. He will do what it takes to keep his friends alive, and he knows what's at stake. He'll make the hard decisions if he has to. And he trusts no one. He probably kills a lot of people ngl.

Katara: The healer and mediator. She keeps the group alive (literally). And she's a bold fighter too. But, the group has enough hotheads as it is, she keeps a pretty chill temper unless absolutely necessary to blow up at her brother, but it's not often. The Gaang probably rely on her maternal instinct a little too much, she shoulders that weight well. She lasts a long time based on her skill and kind of out of necessity. If one of them died, she'd be the one to regroup the team and help them refocus. The same would go in a modern setting I think. She's a Swiss Army knife full of skills and capabilities.

Suki: A fighter and neutral party. She normally is a leader in group settings, but she knows there are a lot of leaders in the group. She doesn't refute plans unless she has to (which isn't often, Sokka knows what he is doing and she often agrees with him). She's a soldier at heart and knows when to get her hands dirty and fight. She'd last the longest simply based on experience. And because others before her would be hotheads that just spiral after a bit. She wouldn't.

Zuko: Bit of a paternal figure, but he is a fighter and a quiet optimist. He knows chances of survival are slim, but he fights and survives until the bitter end. Many come to him for additional support, and he often has words of wisdom to offer (and emergency tea). He wouldn't be the last to survive only because he'd sacrifice himself for his friends first.

And... I think that answers all the questions... In short, Toph kills first, Suki and/or Sokka survive the longest, and Aang and Zuko are the ones that sacrifice themselves for the team.

Zuko would be a Gryffindor and no, you can’t change my mind.

helloooo tumblr. I’m back from my lil hiatus- for now ;) but most importantly, I offer you this as I crawl out of my cave:

so, brief intro. This is based off of my original comments on Pinterest (pictured above), but hopefully written to be a bit more coherent. That comment section had some intense debates, but it was fun seeing everyone’s takes, so I thought I’d bring it over here. I saw lot of people on the Zuko=Slytherin side but, as you can see, I have some strong opinions to the contrary. You guys don’t know this about me but I was obsessed with Harry Potter for a longgg time. I may not be as actively into it now, but once a Potterhead always a Potterhead. That being said- this is all for fun! Reblog/comment your thoughts. What do you think the characters houses would be- let me know :)

Mm yes delicious literary parallels- the stories and characters of Zuko and Sirius Black mirror each other in a lot of ways. That shared angst? Family trauma? Yessir. (And bonus points for being considered heartthrobs haha) If we’re translating Zuko’s story to the HP universe, him having a similar situation to Sirius would make total sense from a literary standpoint. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Sirius Black is from a long prestigious line of pure bloods. (All wizard ancestry). His family is well off and highly respected, in *certain* circles. Most notably though, they’re all Slytherins. It’s a huge part of their identity- they pride themselves heavily on carrying on the tradition of both being a Slytherin and more or less being part of the bad guys. No one really can choose otherwise. Sirius however, gets sorted into Gryffindor, and allies with people that stand for the complete opposite of what his family believes in. He ends up fighting against his own family in order to help defeat Voldemort. Sirius is literally burned off of the family tree tapestry- he’s an outcast, a disgrace to his own family. Sound familiar? Zuko being sorted into Gryffindor while his whole family had always been Slytherins (Azula would 100% be top off her class in Slytherin), having to grow from their bigotry, struggling with his identity and being shunned from his family, and eventually joining the good guys? Yeah, that adds up. Take out the Hogwarts houses and that’s basically his story already.

Honor!!! Okay, this ones pretty short. Basically, Zuko’s actions mostly come from a place of wanting to do the right thing and honor. (Granted, what he did in Seasons 1-2 wasn’t the right thing, but he thought it was at the time). Just the idea of being obsessed with honor (again, the Fire Nations idea of honor is warped but let’s think of it as it’s neutral meaning here- think of chivalry, good reputation, respect, etc) of is more of a Gryffindor thing to me, and again, trying to do the right thing is very much a Gryffindor trait.

Determination aka one of the main Gryffindor traits. Bravery, determination, passion, all define a Gryffindor. Passion is pretty self explanatory, Zuko’s a passionate person, period. Bravery we’ll get to in the next bullet. You cannot tell me my man Zuko is not determined. Some argue that much of his actions were out of ambition, which I’ll get to later, but the way he goes about all of his tasks (capturing the avatar, joining the Gaang, getting Katara to forgive him) is very much Gryffindor. He simply does not give up. He keeps going forward, no matter what- no matter the difficulties, Zuko will keep going. He’s determined, always.

Brave, brash, and a not so small sprinkle of self-sacrifice In their constant efforts to do the right thing, Gryffindors often act recklessly, simply crashing forward in earnestness to do the right thing, to save the day, etc. This is very much Zuko. I love him, but let’s be honest, he can be a bit dumb at times. He’s very brash and can get caught up in the moment. He tends to just run ahead, often acting without thinking, except maybe about his end goal. Not to mention, he’s incredibly brave. I could use countless examples, but the first ones that come to the mind are the Agni Kai with Azula, and leaving to join the Gaang during the eclipse. Zuko literally throws himself in front of lightning for someone. Without a second thought, he sacrifices his own life for someone else. Now if that isn’t reckless Gryffindor bravery in its purest form, I don’t know what is. Zuko leaves behind his throne, his family, girlfriend, honor, home, everything, with the very real possibility of never returning, to join the Gaang. He leaves it all behind, to do the right thing. That is most definitely not a Slytherin move. Maybe he could act as a double agent, giving information to the Gaang while retaining his throne, if he was Slytherin, but that blind all or nothing sacrifice for the greater good is simply out of character for a Slytherin. Not to say they’re evil by any means, but they’re cunning. Your average Slytherin just wants to ensure their well being, and is clever about doing so.

Ambition & Cunning (or not really) One of the most popular arguments for Zuko being a Slytherin is that his quest to capture Aang, was done out of ambition. I would argue that yes, he was ambitious in pursuit of the Avatar, but ultimately his actions were not fueled out of self interest, but for acceptance from his father. He wants to be welcomed back home, he wants love and acceptance. Secondly, Zuko really isn’t that cunning. See all of the above points for more evidence, but he’s simply not. He thunders ahead without a second thought. He doesn’t achieve his goals through meticulous planning, or manipulation and deceitful actions, he just goes for it. Let’s look at Azula, who I think we can all agree is a Slytherin through and through. Many of her most valued traits by Ozai, what makes her so formidable, and what Zuko tries again and again to be more like, are in turn her most Slytherin-esque traits. Azula is the definition of cunning and calculated. She plans every step. She analyzes her enemies weaknesses, their strengths. She’s incredibly powerful, but she doesn’t go full force all the time, she’s meticulous in when and how to use that power. Try as he might, Zuko can never be like her. It just isn’t in his nature. He’s not calculating or manipulative, he’s painfully brash, passionate, and straight forward. Take season 2 episode 8, “The Chase.” While Aang is fighting with Azula and Zuko, he gets to the second story of a building via airbending that doesn’t have a floor. In pursuit of him, Azula almost falls through, but quickly realizes and deftly jumps off to the side. Shortly after, Zuko runs through with a determined yell, but doesn’t notice and crashes straight down. This, is the perfect example of them as characters and their dynamic. Azula, always on guard and calculating, Zuko, full steam ahead, all passion and bravery, no hesitation.

Not everyone’s a hero! A common misconception is that Slytherins are the bad guys while Gryffindors are the good guys. I’ve seen this argument as evidence for Zuko being a Slytherin- he wasn’t a hero for most of the story, so he can’t possibly be a Gryffindor. First of all, Zuko has never truly been evil. He’s constantly had the conflicting ideas of good and evil, i.e- Roku and Sozin, within in him; it just takes a long and difficult journey to become a hero. And again, his actions were fueled not by selfish intent, but by a need for acceptance, and that’s all he knew. By merely going through that incredibly painful journey of growth, he ultimately proves his bravery even more, and his determination. He went through all that hardship, but kept going, kept fighting, and came out a good person in the end. I want to stress this point though- not all Gryffindors are these dashing heroes, especially not straight away. Look at Colin Creevey or Neville Longbottom- both Gryffindors, and both untraditional heroes. Sure, they were never ‘evil’, but they did start off unassuming, anxious, and awkward. Many, including themselves, doubted their status as Gryffindors, but by the end of the series through their growth and hard work, ended up proving themselves as the heroes they always had been, even if they didn’t know it. Heroism comes in many different forms and from many different places.

I could probably go on, but I’m sure you get the idea. Let me know what you think! I’m very much team Zuko=Gryffindor obviously, but I’m not sure about the other characters. I’d love to hear everyone’s ideas or takes on my argument :)

It shocks me over and over again when I come across blogs that extremely aggressively, absolutely HATE LOK, Korra, korrasami and practically every character and aspect of the show. I have to share this horror with others because these are just a small part of the awful views from that blog (supposedly feminist and lesbian), interestingly, attitudes about LOK and korrasami were mostly positive or at least neutral in 2014-2015, and then abruptly changed sometime in the middle of last year which coincides with LOK finally being on Netflix, I will probably respond to if I am in the mood for a toxic discussion...

I have heard good things about the Kyoshi novels! Unfortunately, LOK is the drop of shit that has poisoned the entire water supply. All ATLA-related works are going to have to be LOK compliant now, which is so deeply restrictive and contradictory to what I liked about ATLA in the first place. I feel like pre-canon stuff is safer (and again, heard AMAZING things about what FC Yee has done with a pre-ATLA world), but I guess I’m too cynical to get really invested in any more ATLA stuff anymore.

but like... bro..... before i even start i want you to know transfem nonbinary jinora is just 200% projection. mentioned her a little bit in my nonbinary tenzin headcanons but she deserves her own 20 posts.

so yes jinora is transfem and nonbinary ❤️

she originally came out as a trans girl because at the time she thought the label fit.

being her though, jinora does a lot of reading and research on gender just because she wants to know stuff--especially when she’s reading about katara and aang and everyone, there’s a lot of language used for aang especially that she hasn’t heard before. it’s most gender-neutral equivalents of titles and stuff like that, but it does make her curious.

like even though pema is trans and she would answer any questions jinora had, and tenzin would be able to answer others she had about aang specifically, jinora is also big adhd and after one book about aang, it goes to another book about aang, and then a book about gender, and then ANOTHER book about it, and... well, she has found out a lot more than probably either of them might have been able to tell her.

she eventually comes across a book about other trans people’s experiences with gender and she’s reading it like........ huh... isn’t that interesting

pema and tenzin kind of start to notice like haha... hey jinora... u can talk to us about anything u know that right :)

she’s like yes of course i do :D

it’s after that that pema starts trying to talk more about gender but jinora’s like “oh yeah anyways” and starts infodumping everything she knows.

then tenzin tells them they’ve been questioning their own gender during a conversation, and jinora is kind of thrown for a bit lmao.

tenzin talks about the air nomads + the southern water tribe + gender roles, and um... haha... wow okay... maybe she shares some of the same feeling they’re describing.

she starts questioning her own and after a while comes out as a trans girl, but does more research which leads to her instead finding that maybe she is a trans girl, but she’s also nonbinary.

like just look at jinora and tell me she wouldn’t like finding the exact words for her identity. it makes her so happy lol.

she only uses she/her pronouns. she used to go by she/they but it kind of felt like sometimes people only used they/them as a way to avoid referring to her with she/her altogether. like lmao people genuinely just seemed to hate using she/her. like she would approach people about it and ask them to use she/her more and they would be like “oh okay” and then just continue with only they/them even when she’s around to hear it.

so yeah she didn’t necessarily mind they/them but... yeah.

when tenzin starts using any pronouns but with only them specifically, jinora considers doing the same thing with letting only them use she/they, but... hm.

anways jinora is okay with being called a girl/sister/daughter/etc, but she’s also fine with more gender-neutral stuff

after she comes out the first time she wants to start growing out her hair, and it actually makes her super happy when it gets down to her chin. like... oh, that’s me.

before she just shaved her head, which is why shaving her head again to get her tattoos makes her super anxious, but she always wants her tattoos more than anything, and she has well since earned them too lmao.

A - Your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s)

Well, haha. For LOTR: Legolas/Gimli, as everyone knows. Lately I’ve been having lots of feelings about various OC pairing, and I have particularly strong feelings about Thranduil and his wife – feelings that are only growing stronger, really. I really love a triad with Frodo&Sam/Rosie, where Sam and Rosie are romantically and sexually involved and Frodo is a queerplatonic partner to them.

Outside of LOTR, the only main pairings I really have strong feelings about are all the canon pairings from ATLA – Katara/Aang, Sokka/Suki, and Zuko/Mai. I just think those couples are so lovely and well-executed (unpopular opinion, in some cases!) and I love them all very much.

B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind

This one would be Gimli/Eomer! I hadn’t thought much about it (I didn’t even notice the incredible innuendo the two of them trade in my first read because I was so occupied by Gimli and Legolas) until I read “A Question of Honour” by Honesty and it changed my life and now I need more fic of Gimli and Eomer making out rightnowrightnowrightnow.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t (again: be nice)

Unfortunately… basically any ship that includes Legolas but not Gimli. Most of them I don’t particularly wish I liked, but every now and then, someone comes around with an OC that they’ve clearly put so much thought and care into, who has a really thoughtful backstory and worthy relationship (no I’m not addressing this at anyone in particular why ever would you think I was) and I just wish I could engage with it, but . . . the NOTP feelings are real. Somehow, as we have discussed, I am able to simultaneously hold the belief that romance is not inherently more important than other relationships – and the utter inability to picture Legolas romantically with anyone else. (This would be the case with any long-term pairing with Gimli, too, but he doesn’t really tend to get paired with anyone else so I don’t run into the issue. My theory is that by the time fandom came around to recognizing the inherent attractiveness of dwarves, most of those people had also come around to recognizing Legolas and Gimli as a forever love.)

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)

I am not generally a big fan of Angel from the Buffyverse, but I really genuinely enjoy watching him when he’s being goofy with his friends on his spinoff show. The moments are fewer and farther between than I wish they were, but they always make me smile and I wish the show had leaned into them more, because he can really be sweet and silly when he’s with people he has a good rapport with.

(Note that for this question I am making a distinction between favorites specifically and characters I would die defending – there is certainly a lot of overlap, but there are some characters I adore but don’t perceive as needing defense, and others I adore but who don’t deserve my defense – and others who need defense but I do not consider my children. Aang. AANG AANG AANG. He is my SON and my CHILD and my LOVE and as soon as I see anything that has even the slightest whiff of disfavor I’m climbing that hill, knives out.

Korra, also. I’m not as involved in LOK fandom, but I’ve definitely seen some stuff that makes me want to shield her with my own body (though she’d never let me).
