Bleeding mycena (Mycena haematopus)
Happy Halloween! This harmless little mushroom is an easily identified mycena, as it drips a blood-like red latex when cut or damaged.

FOTD #017 : bleeding fairy helmet! (mycena haematopus)
the bleeding fairy helmet (also called bleeding mycena or burgundydrop bonnet) is a saprotrophic fungus in the family mycenaceae. this species has been found in north america, europe, japan, & venezuela. they're often found on decaying stumps or logs, & can grow in groups that are joined together at the base.
the big question : can i bite it??
this species is considered inedible, as it as not yet been tested for toxins.

m. haematopus description :
"the fruit bodies of m. haematopus have caps that are up to 4 cm (1+5⁄8 in) wide, whitish gills, & a thin, fragile reddish-brown stem with thick coarse hairs at the base. they are characterized by their reddish color, the scalloped cap edges, and the dark red latex they "bleed" when cut or broken. both the fruit bodies & the mycelia are weakly bioluminescent. m. haematopus produces various alkaloid pigments unique to this species."

My entry for february's @art.prof art dare. I used this photo (at the end) I took of some bleeding fairy helmet mushrooms for reference. Not visible in this photo but they really do bleed red when cut. I was very inspired by the lighting. I felt like my body of work so far is lacking in terms of lighting. It's something I wanted to practice more and get better at so I tried to recreate some of the lighting effects. This paper did not like the bokeh lol! Will have to practice that more on better paper. I was also inspired by a piece I did a while back inspired by witches hat mushrooms that had a very children's book/fairy tale kind of feel to it. I wanted to practice that kind of illustration again. My intention for this piece was for the viewer to notice the mushrooms first and seem almost like just a realistic nature illustration and then notice more magical things the longer they look a it. I don't know how successful that was here but I want to practice that more. I wanted to practice storytelling a little as well. You might notice she has a shiny red pendant necklace like the droplets on the mushrooms. Is she hiding under that mushroom or is she wearing it like a hat? Anyway I felt like I really pushed myself with this and that feels really rewarding. I hope you all like it. It is ink, watercolor, and gouache. 🍄

In honor of October, here’s some Bleeding Fairy Helmet (Mycena haematopus) with its spooky dark red latex drip. Almost just as freaky and fun is the way the cap goes pale when you pull it off.
