@whyamionlyabletouse32characters
Again, their hair shifts as they attempt to clear their head, brow drawn in. Keeping their eyes on the ground, they perk up as they hear a voice across the crowd call for them.
“A little early today, eh, Samuel?” a short woman smiles up at them, before returning to her goods – a table with bread and other bakery items set out across it surface.
They return her bright grin with their own pale comparison, shrugging the bag off their shoulders. “The world’s waking up sooner.”
“It has been indeed!” she laughs. “Getting closer to the solstice every day. Here, hun,” she hands him a small fabric bag filled with food. “Do you think some of them will come celebrate it with us? Just the locals, unlike today.”
Tumblr media
Samuel’s eyes flit around at the comment as they accept it, handing over their goods from their own bag. “That’ll be next week’s too, I think… I dunno what we’re planning.”
There’s a pause as she tucks the sack in a box behind her. As she turns back, Samuel rubs the back of their neck and shifts their position slightly. She notices, raising a concerned look.
As they look back up, they say, “Heard anything…”
“I’m not sure, dear,” her eyes shift past Samuel for a brief second, then returning back to meet their gaze. “Nothing from the café, yet. But no news is good news for that, right?”
“I s’pose… Anyways, thanks,” they say, raising their bag, now containing the food, towards her as they turn to leave. And they notice that there is a group of unfamiliar faces watching them.

Day 4: Nightmare
Fun fact: I was trying to draw Vincent for this, but gave up and just used a generic sheep instead. I think it helped with my current time constrictions, seeing as I'm a little behind.

October Writing Prompts—Day Five—5th October 2021:
Tumblr media
Prompt: Hanahaki
For those of you who don't know, Hanahaki disease is a fictional disease wherein flowers grow in the throat of someone harbouring unrequited feelings, and I wanted to go for a different vibe than a lot of other Hanahaki stories. So, I present to you: Hanahaki Helpline!
Thanks once again to @mythyk-art for the lovely prompt list! Go give them some love, and if you enjoyed this, maybe check out the last few days too! If you feel like being added to a taglist for this, just let me know!
Conor Diaz clutched his phone with trembling hands as he plugged in the number he’d been taught again and again at school, the one he’d never believed he would ever actually need to use.
His popsocket dug lines into his palm, a perfect circle, a zero, just like the time he had left. The number was in; he tried his best to breathe, then pressed the call button.
It was barely a second before his call was through.
“Good evening,” a woman’s voice filtered through the speaker, clear and calm, “this is the Hanahaki Helpline.”
“Hi,” Conor croaked, the simple word tearing at his throat, sending pain lancing through his head like nothing he’d ever felt before, and nothing he’d ever live to feel again. “I think I need your help.”
“Sweetie,” the voice on the other end of the line said, breaking slightly, “are you sitting down?”
Conor shook his head, then realised the lady would have no way of knowing that. “No,” he whispered.
“Ok,” she said slowly, “are you in your bedroom at the moment?”
“Yes.”
“I want you to lie down on your bed, with your head on a pillow and a pillow between your legs. Try your best to keep your back straight too. Can you do that for me, sweetie?”
“Will that help me breathe?” Conor asked. “I need to breathe.”
“It will,” the lady replied softly, and Conor shuffled into the position she’d described. As he lay down, opening his mouth to draw in a shaky breath, a flower bloomed beneath his tongue—a thorn pierced it, streaked a sharp line of pain right through it and left blood spilling in its wake, the taste of iron on his teeth.
Iron and roses.
“It sounds like you’ve been holding onto this for quite a long time,” the lady said, “so we’re going to try and do this as efficiently as possible—”
“It hurts,” Conor whimpered, and suddenly he felt so, so weak. “Make it stop hurting. Make it go away.”
“Only you can do that,” the lady said, “but I can help you work out how. Hanahaki disease stems from—I’m so sorry—is caused by unrequited feelings. The flowers blooming in your throat will stop you from breathing, so I want you to stay quiet now. Try to save your breath.”
The flowers were growing quicker now—another one sprung up, petals pressed against the roof of his mouth, thorns digging into his gums.
“The flowers will die if you sort out your feelings though. So, I want you to think long and hard, really pick your brain, about who you have these feelings for. Is it someone you’re crushing on? A friend you think is drifting away? A parent who just won’t pay attention?”
Conor thought to his best friend since second grade, thought of his bright smile and vivid green eyes, thought of the long nights they’d spent together, gazing up at the stars, pointing out constellations and climbing trees to get a better view. He thought of how little they’d spoken since Conor had kissed him, since he’d moved away only a week or two later. How Toby had left him on read time after time. Now there was no more time.
“Think about what you want to happen, what you want to come out of this relationship that you think never can, and then consider what would happen if it never happened.”
Conor didn’t care what came out of their relationship—if they became fast friends, or boyfriends, or even just casual acquaintances, people who spoke once in a while and reminisced the whole time about what they’d used to have been. He just wanted something. Anything.
This silent treatment was killing him.
The lady continued. “Consider the ways life would go on for you—the sun would still rise and set, the flowers would still smell the same, you’d still be able to make yourself a life.”
Not if he died. Not if he died at the hands of the same flowers he’d picked Toby, handed him proudly in the meadow last summer, before it had all gone wrong—his knees had been scuffed from searching through the allotment, his fingers bleeding from the thorns on the stems that had sliced him as he pulled the roses from the earth, and Toby had thrown them aside, taken his hands in his own and plastered them himself.
His hands had been a painting of plasters and dried blood, and the flowers were scattered on the floor behind them as Toby wrapped him in a hug so warm he thought he would never stop feeling it on his skin, but he’d never been happier.
He couldn’t feel that warmth anymore. He needed it so badly, but all he had was a pillow between his legs, a pillow on his head, and flowers in his lungs.
“No matter how bad the big picture might look without this person, imagine all the little things that would stay the same—the birds would still chirp. The Earth would still spin. The stars would still rise every night.”
The stars. They’d watched the stars together. He could watch them without Toby too, but it wouldn’t be the same. Toby could weave stories from them, pluck out shapes and histories and glowing pinpricks of magic to weave into Conor’s life.
It felt like those pinpricks would never leave him, like that warmth would never flood from his veins. But it had.
“And please, please realise that whatever happened between you in the past is not gone because of this. Everything will have its place, and what you experienced together isn’t ruined by letting go now.”
Conor drew in a breath, that quickly turned into a whimper. The edges of his vision were darkening, and he squeezed his eyes shut like that would stop it from happening.
“The stars will still rise.”
The stars.
The stars, the stars, the stars.
Why did it always have to come back to the stars? He’d watched them rise and fall, time and time again, and Toby had been by his side every time.
“The stars will still rise, and you can be there to see them.”
The stars would still rise whether Toby was there to watch them with him or not. And maybe, if Conor could watch them on his own, he could make new memories. He could spin himself some magic of his own, magic to rival Toby’s. He could watch the stars rise and not miss what he didn’t have anymore.
He could find something new.
Pain enveloped him, filling his throat, spasming through his head and tongue and gums, rattling his teeth, sending blood spewing out all over his pillow.
He sucked in one last breath. He could feel it all reach his lungs.
“Are you there?” The lady asked suddenly, panicked. “Sweetie, are you with me?”
Conor let his eyes flutter open, shifted his head, looked at the blood dripping all over his pillow, and in it, floating gently like lilies in a pond, white roses, petals stained with blood.
“I am,” Conor said, “I’m here.”

Welcome.
Our story begins with a forest, tucked up against a vast mountain range. A young adult stands at the edge, looking out from the trees to the valley beyond. Once a bag they had been carrying is set on the ground, they gaze out at the land, past green fields and farmlands, to a small town. A large sweater drapes over their body, the sleeves pushed past their elbows, revealing various markings and scars. One hand rests on their hip while their other arm supports them against the rough wood of a tree.
