Icons for Newbies!

So I made a poll to see if I should draw some profile icons for newbies, and you guys said yes, so I whipped up this little set real quick!

Wasn't sure what to make so just went with some simple monochromatic designs based off the tumblr colors. These are free for anyone to use, but made mostly to help newbies not look like bots (because keeping the default icons and empty blogs make you look like bots, and if you look like a bot you risk your favorite blogs blocking you by mistake!)

Also, here's a free header- mostly because it amuses me, but also because it further helps signal you're not a bot. (So will making a post or reblogging literally anything. Even just making a post saying you're shy and/or just lurking for now helps wonders to keep people from mistaking you for a bot!)

Liking and/or reblogging is appreciated if you use them, and will help other newbies be able to see that they're available if they can't find their own!

I'll probably make more later. Again, I'm not taking individual requests for these, but if you have a theme or fandom in mind you'd like to see, throw me an ask and I might make another set happen.

got any general scug tips for a rain world newbie? (<- just bought the game today and has only played the tutorial)

Omg I did not think that I'd be giving out tips (considering a month ago I was screaming at my bestie "HELP WHAT IS THAT AM I DEAD" about twice every 3 mins) xD

Tbh idk what you mean bout tutorial but maybe I just missed the tutorial which would make a lot of sense BC I was very confused on my first RW playthrough as Survivor... Also idk how much you know so I'm just going through the stuff I was Very Confused and Scared About on my first playthrough!

I assume you're playing as Survivor! In which case, you're gonna wanna follow where the Yellow Guy is trying to point you in the direction of (Iggy is your friend!! /gen), that should help you get to where you need to go!

If you don't mind spoilers, I'd suggest looking at the Rain World wiki Here, it's NOT a fandom wiki and therefore is a functioning wiki. I played through Survivor and Monk with a map on my second monitor BC it was so useful being able to see the exact direction I should go (I got very lost the first 20 cycles).

If you don't want spoilers, here are some other tips:

Green Lizards want to eat you. Don't let them eat you by climbing up a rope

Eat food as quickly as possible, then you can run into a den if you need to!

Keep an eye on how much time in the day you have, it can be viewed by pressing the map button and holding until they appear

Unlike green lizards, pink lizards can climb ropes :( this is scary so just run away (or attack the lizard with a spear if you're better at this game than I am...)

If you see a fluffy creature with big round eyes and spears and grabby hands, give them a pearl!! They can be befriended and they are valuable allies (they will stab things for you if you're good friends with them)

Every time you sleep with plenty of food, your karma goes up. This is the bar on the side. This is not the end of the game. I thought it was first playthrough, unfortunately. But if you get maximum karma for 6 cycles something cool happens!

Your karma flowers (the yellow glowy flowers you can eat that saves your karma) respawn where you die!! You can go and pick them up and eat them again, provided you don't die that cycle before eating them again

And finally: Don't be disheartened if you die. Or it takes a While to complete the game. It took me about 40 hours to complete Survivor, and 150+ cycles. You got this!! Feel free to send any more asks, anon, or even DM me BC I will 100% chat bout RW with you!!!

tip for newbies: if you set your queue to 50 posts a day you can spam reblog as much as you want because it won't overload anyone's dash AND nobody will be able to tell when you're online (just be careful not to queue current events posts, because your queue can go up to two weeks out)

Alcohol tips for newbie writers (or non drinkers!):

At bars, people who order “chasers” after their shots are ordering something to wash down the taste of their shot with. This can be juice, soda, more alcohol, or even pickle juice

Hard liquor is generally sold in stores as shots (tiny bottles), fifths, liters, and handles or in ml (50, 100, 200 etc)

Most people can’t finish an entire fifth of hard liquor (vodka, etc) on their own without being very ill

Conversely, many people can finish an entire bottle of wine on their own without being ill

Liquor can be “bottom shelf” or “rail” or “well” -- all synonyms for the cheapest version of alcohol a bartender has. Bars generally keep several “levels” of alcohol stocked

You order a drink with the alcohol first, then the mix -- e.g., a “vodka soda” or a “Tito’s and tonic”

When you “close out a tab”, you pay for all of the drinks you’ve had that night. Either the bartender already has your card (you “opened a tab” earlier) or it was quiet enough that they just kept an eye on you and tallied your bill up at the end

“Doubles” are drinks or shots with double the standard pour of alcohol

In the US, most shots (pours) are 1.5 oz by default. 

Mixed drinks (gin and tonic, vodka lemonade, cosmos, etc) are generally made up of 1-2 shots and a mixer 

If you don’t specify which type of alcohol you’d like in a mixed drink (vodka cranberry, for example) the bartender will put whatever the “house” liquor is -- and this depends entirely on the establishment. A dive bar will pour rail by default, whereas a nicer tavern might make all vodka cranberries with Tito’s

uhhhhhh aphelios f2p this week should i try him out (i got scared just from reading his abilities but i think he's really cute)

aphelios is super simple!! i promise!!!!!! even a goofy goober like me picked him up!!

there's a bit more to him than just this guide of course, but the same can be said about other champions's kits & abilities/strategies/etc.!

imo you should focus on remembering what each gun does when you first start playing him. it's easier to take stuff one step at a time, and if you find yourself in a bind, you'll know what your current weapons do.

(better to know your weapons well than to try and follow a weapon combo/rotation and not know what your attacks are doing. you can still make the most out of a bad weapon combo if you have to)

Sorry not sorry but I wish more newbies were willing to put in the work to actually learn about witchcraft rather than asking everyone to spoon feed them every little tidbit of information.

Do you think your spell work and Craft will be successful if you aren’t even willing to put in the work to learn about witchcraft/magic? Because I really don’t think you’ll find much success or joy in the Craft if you aren’t willing to put in the work. I’ve seen it happen first hand, too.

If you need help learning how to research, that’s one thing! I know that a lot of people aren’t taught how to research things. But please, you need to stop asking more experienced witches to spoon feed you every drop of information out there! There’s so much to witchcraft and more is developing all the time, it’s impossible to really be like “start here!”. It depends on what you want to be involved in, how you want to go about developing your own Craft, forming your own beliefs and opinions.

Some of us have topics we do consider starting points or the foundation that should make up anyone’s Craft, but that’s all just opinion. We all got different ones. There really aren’t solid ways to go about practicing witchcraft. If you need assistance in learning how to research; ask!

Arcana Twilight and Obey Me (OG) Comparison

Background: Obey Me (OG) was officially released on December 11, 2019, while Arcana Twilight was released on August 25, 2022 for worldwide audience. People have said that Arcana Twilight have similar mechanics with Obey Me (OG), but to what extent? I've played both games, so I'll write this comparison.

Disclaimer: The things I would write here would be based on my observation of the game mechanics and features present in both games. I did this post to list down the similarities and difference between both games, and not to cause dissonance between two fandoms.

I'll list down the similarities in this format:

Differences

a. Amount of ads

The very first thing that will greet you when you open the Arcana Twilight is an ad. Both games have ads to support their game mechanics, but the amount of ads you could find in Arcana Twilight is more than those in Obey Me.

The Obey Me ads are mostly there to help the players gain more chances to battle the stages - thru gaining more AP or gaining more battle chances in hard stages or event stages.

The Arcana Twilight ads, however, are mostly found everywhere, since the ads can be used to double the resources drops/gold and to obtain materials and gold if you don't have MP to farm battle stages. You could even use the ads to reduce the time for Visits, which then you don't have to wait long to get gold to upgrade your cards. The ads in this game is like a massive cheat to progress faster thru the game. All you have to do is watch ads and you'll have your resources as reward.

However, there are times wherein forced ads would sometimes pop out after you complete a battle stage in main story or when you'd open the app. If the player wants to opt out of the ads, unfortunately, they can't do so. I'm not sure if the Arcana Club membership implements a "No-Ads" perk though.

As for why are there so many ads in the game? There's a speculation that the reason might be because of this. The link discussed about the reason for why it looks like they are in need of money. Since ads is an option to gain money in a game, they utilized it in order to make money because they are constantly on red. This is actually a good way for free-to-play (F2Ps) players to support the developers if they can't shell out money or buy the Arcana Club membership in the game.

b. Crystal Rewards in Main Story Stages and Daily Missions

One thing you'd notice right away is that in Arcana Twilight, each battle stage rewards 50 crystals for first-time 3-star clear. Then, after you clear out the whole chapter, you'll receive another crystal reward for 3-starring all stages in the chapter. The daily missions give out 50 crystals each day, so it pays the effort to open the game daily and clear out the dailies.

It is completely different from Obey Me (OG), wherein completing each stage in the main story, you'll only receive devil's tree items in the missions and occasionally, you'll get DP for the boss stage you've cleared for the chapter. The daily missions only give out a total of 18 devil points.

c. Events

Obey Me constantly push events every time in the game. There are times when there would be downtime, but it is pretty minimal. The events have story stages and reward ladders that players could opt to grind if they want the UR cards in the event. There are also event cards that is only available in time-limited event banners, which can boost the points for the reward ladder grind.

However, the Pop Quiz or Celestial Blessing events are mostly for spending players and not for F2Ps because of how much resources you need to put into the event just to get the desired rewards from the ladder. F2Ps could join the Birthday event grind but with proper preparation first. But the good news is that the past Pop Quiz and Celestial Blessing events do come back in Lonely Devil and you could rerun the event for a limited time to grind for the rewards as F2P.

Arcana Twilight, on the other hand, has event cards but there is no event story stages nor reward ladders to grind for. The event story is locked behind the event cards from the limited-time banners.

When it comes to limited-time event banners, Obey Me only have demon cards in the banners, whereas in Arcana Twilight, the event banners include both sorcerer card and wish card in the roster. The Obey Me event memory cards are only available in the event reward ladders.

Both games have event banner reruns and Obey Me rerun banners also retain the pity/total summons done from before, so that players could continue their pulls the next time the banner reruns. As for Arcana Twilight, I have no idea if the rerun banners also retain the pity/total summons from previous banner run.

d. Main Story Chapter Updates

There's this joke in the fandom that while Obey Me updates their main story chapter every week, Arcana Twilight gets update every year. It sounds like a joke, but it's not really far-fetch from what happened.

To start off, I'm not a day 1 player. I only started recently so the things I'm writing here are from what I understood in my research. I snooped around the archives of the official Tumblr account of Arcana Twilight and sub-Reddit and found their posts about the chapter additions in the game and noted their timestamps.

Their very first chapter addition is Floor 10, which means that on its initial release, the game has until Floor 9 only. Floor 10 was announced to be added on September 2022, Floor 11 on April 2023, Floor 12 on late October 2023, and recently released, Floor 13 was added on December 2023.

I still haven't reached Floor 13 yet. I stopped at Floor 8 at the time of this writing, because of the requirement needing me to be at least level 30 to proceed to next floor, which I'm currently low-leveled yet for that, so I could only bid my time and make my team stronger for the next floors.

But from what I could tell, the players feel as if they were left with a cliffhanger with the recent addition, with many of them thinking that a lot of questions were left unanswered. They could see the potential of the story in the game but, a lot of lore details weren't really touched on in the story.

I'm not really sure what happened in Floor 13 since I tried to avoid the story spoiler, but this image below is what I saw mostly talked about.

People are either thinking that this ending credit means that the main story of the game is completely finished or that this credit is saying that this floor is the end of Season 1 of main story.

In my opinion, I'm not really sure how to react to this kind of news. I just recently started the game and wrote the newbie guide and card mechanic guide posts just a few days after playing the game, only to find out that the game is probably on it last leg. I'm not really sure what would happen next for this game and I could only wait it out.

e. Inventory

Obey Me (OG) doesn't have an inventory, while Arcana Twilight has one.

f. Friend list

Obey Me (OG) has friend list where you could gain 50 AP by exchanging with friends daily, while Arcana Twilight doesn't have one.

So I'm sure almost everyone knows about the porn bot problem by now, so here's a post detailing why it's a problem, and what we need to do about it.

First off, yes, always block the porn bots. Don't be mislead into thinking they're ok to keep around because they 'inflate your follower count.'

Firstly, no one cares about, nor can anyone even see, your follower count. Be free from the shackles that are the bullshit other socials told you was important. Don't let your ego be tied to a number. Having a lot of followers won't earn you any clout here.

Secondly, bots only follow blogs to try and legitimize their malware (and other dodgy) links. This post goes into more detail about that.

Now that that's out of the way, you'll need to know how to recognize a porn bot. This round the template seems to be:

A profile photo of a pretty lady or guy, usually in their underwear, with a similar header photo.

A bio with some combination of: [Age] // [Name] // [Location] // [Emoji] // [Top Bullshit% OnlyFans]

URL consisting of a name followed by a number (i.e: firstlast999)

Typically an empty blog, or if there is content, it's all dodgy links. Visible, but empty, Likes Tab, & occasionally a visible Following Tab.

You likely recognize the pattern.

So, what you want to do is, first, report the blog as spam On mobile it'll look like this:

On mobile you'll need to report spam first, and then go back to the menu again to block.

On desktop it will look like this, and unlike mobile, you'll be able to report spam and block in the same motion:

If I remember correctly,* be sure to "Report Spam", not "Report sexually explicit material" to feed the bots to the proper channels. Because the blog is empty, they haven't posted anything explicit that would violate TOS. However, staff can recognize a bot, and if you report the blog for spam (the actual problem) they'll take a look, more than likely find that the blog is posting or DMing dodgy links, and dispose of it.

[UPDATE: It was suggested on another post that the bots track your IP if you click on them to send more your way. However, someone from staff corrected and said this is incorrect. They also corrected the 'guilt by association' myth that bots following you can get your blog flagged by tumblr.

That said, that trail all led to another, easier, way to report/block the bots all from your Follower Tab instead of visiting each blog separately, unfortunately it only works on desktop:

(For newbies, click on the little person icon at the top right of your screen and scroll to find the Followers tab under the blog/sideblog you need to block a pornbot from.)

*I remember this information from a blog that used to be all about taking down the pornbots. Unfortunately I do not know if that blog is still active, nor can I remember the URL. First of all welcome, things are different here, and we won’t lie, it’s a mess but we also kinda love it.

1. Want to be popular or famous on here??  Move along, not gonna happen. Follower count aren’t shown to others here, nor is the following count. No one cares, and honestly it’s one of my favourite things about this site. Does a person have 10 or 10k followers?? Only they know. Following to unfollow later isn’t really a bit issue, there’s no reason to because no one knows how many followers you have. 

2. Block, block and block. Blocking is seen as like a last resort or something big on other sites. Not here, block who you want when you want for whatever reason you want. It’s not a big thing.

3. Your dash is yours. Follow who you want and whatever you want. Unfollow whenever you want. Follow your likes and change however often you want.

4. Want to make a popular post?? Good luck my friend A popular post could be anything from useful information to someone going ‘I like salt’ to someone really random. Post what you wanna post when you wanna post without hope it’s gonna get noticed. Which leads me to my next point

5. It’s basically yelling into a void here Post whatever you want, it’s probably going to end up getting swallowed into the void with maybe the same 5 people here liking it. It’s basically just like yelling while in a crowd and 1 person might yell back, but that’s it.

6. Likes are cool, but it’s not what we’re really into. Likes are cool, but only you see what you like, unless you make it visible to others. Reblogs are basically sharing stuff to your profile and to someone else's dash so others see what you reblog. If you like something, reblog it. Like it is just basically saving it for you to look back at later. Comments are basically just a convo between you and the original poster. You can reblog with a reply, so the comment is public and others can reply to you. Notes are the overall amount of comments, likes, and reblogs. Aim for liking and then reblogging something

7. Tags are cool, but they are also for thoughts. so you can tag stuff with the basics #Photo #Art etc, but you can also #I really like this and once I saw something similar and it reminds me of that. Hashtags here can have spaces and can be quite long, but you can break it up with other hashtags for basic sentences

8. Find your people There is a fandom and blog for everything and I mean everything. You can always find a blog or someone who likes what you like. You just have to find them and search tags. I’ve only been involved in the book side (Booklr) and the study side (Studyblr) but there is always someone out there you can chat to

9. Just have fun We’re not really here for much else. There’s no pressure on tumblr, there’s no popular side, there’s no fight to be something you’re not. Just be yourself and enjoy what you can

10. This site is a mess Yeah, things stop working or they mess around, it’s part of the charm

Bonus:

A lot of the time there are inside jokes. I came across one this morning I had no idea what it meant. You can find tags or sometimes people explain. We want people in on the joke, if you know the joke and someone asks you, don’t be a snob about it. Let them in on it. It’s so much more fun and its amazing what people can do.

a great writing tip to overcome writer’s block I wish someone would’ve told me sooner:

go into ao3, open up a new fic, and tag your fic idea like it’s complete. add your possible characters and relationships, and then any tags you think might come up.

ao3 will suggest tags based on word choice (if I type in “Bruce Wayne” it will suggest “Bruce Wayne is…” or “Bruce Wayne’s…”) and you can use these as possible fic ideas.

you can answer some good questions too. is this fic explicit? who’s in this fic? will it be multiple chapters? is it gen or slash? both?

eventually, you’ll end up with a decent fic outline! or some new ideas. or both.

tip 1: invest in a notebook for rough drafts and ideas

tip 2: use google docs to keep track of your works in case tumblr bugs out and deletes your work

tip 3: grammarly is really really helpful!!

tip 4: don't be afraid of details and background information, sometimes it keeps the reader wanting more

tip 5: ignore the word count until you're finished. if you keep checking it you'll feel pressured to end it quicker, which could mean certain details will be left out

tip 6: have fun with it! if it doesn't make sense, then figure out ways to make it more understandable for your readers
