An incomplete list of awards the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was nominated for or won…
Don't mind me, I'm doing an experiment to see if I can archive old Dreamworks She-Ra posts on Tumblr in case the Twitter account goes inactive and everything is deleted…

One thing I've been thinking a lot about amid the argument over the Barbie movie's lack of nominations is the aggressive level of hate it gets.
FYI, this is not about whether I think the Barbie movie deserved more nominations or not because it doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter if it was a good movie or not. It doesn't matter that it was about feminism either. What matters — and what is at the core of all the hate — is that it's a movie for women. For girls.
Anything whose target audience is young women and teenage girls is inevitably slammed with hate.
It will be called overrated. It will be called basic. It will be shit on. The comments and reviews will be FULL of people saying how stupid or terrible it is, how they've always hated it, and how anyone who watches or listens or consumes it is too.
Again, it does not matter whether x product or y performer is overrated, or not talented, or a thousand other insults people (mostly men, but anyone seeking to set themselves, even subtly, apart from people who like popular, feminine things). What matters is the alarming level to which we've normalized the hate that gets thrown at young women — and especially at teenage girls — for daring to like something popular.
Since when has popular become a bad word? Products that are marketed towards women are hugely profitable, and yet critically shamed. Remember pumpkin spice lattes? I've never seen one girl fawn over them as much as I've seen 100 grownass men spew nonsense about how silly and childish and girly a flavor is. A flavor.
It doesn't matter what Taylor Swift's most adoring fans are like, even the ones who are over the top, because no one attacks men who get too enthusiastic about their favorite sports teams or fantasy football the way people attack her fans for being excited to see her in concerts. It's because her fanbase is predominantly young girls, and anything young women are into must be shamed.
The relative anonymity — or at least, the safety — of the internet has enabled people to be harsher than they might in real life, but bullying young women and girls for their interests is not a new phenomenon.
Romance has occupied the lowest rung of the genre ladder for arguably hundreds of years. Wholly romantic movies (meaning movies in which romance is the primary drama, rather than a subplot within another genre) must be *exemplary* to get critical praise. More male-centric genres like dramas or any movie seen as "intellectual" often only have to be *good* to get the same kind of attention. This is not a dig at Oppenheimer or any of the other movies nominated (nor am I saying Barbie is a romance). The point is that romance is held to a significantly higher critical standard because it is largely not for a male audience.
(As a side note, plenty of romance is genderless the way many other genres' audiences are, but as a society we've boxed it into a 'feminine' box and decided feminine=bad. I could write a whole essay as to why.)
I am absolutely not saying Barbie deserved or didn't deserve this or that, or that Taylor Swift should never be criticized, or that romance is a perfect genre. I am not saying these examples are the most important of their kind.
What I am saying is that anything that is both popular and centered around women is always, inevitably, and extremely harshly attacked by people who do not like it, and this has the potential to be incredibly damaging to teenage girls, especially in an age where social media use starts younger and younger.
What happened to, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all? Or, let people like what they like? You don't have to like something, but you don't always have to voice your hate for it either.

Almost/Could have been Companion: Nominations
It's nomination time: Who is the Best Almost Companion
Who would you like to have seen become a companion?
Rules:
Must have met the Doctor
I know Jago and Litefoot are popular but I am not including anyone from Talons as a matter of principle
Not someone you could already call a companion (some exceptions may be made on a case by case basis) (if they are TV characters who are companions only in the EU that will be allowed)
Not necessary, but ideally someone who would have said yes in the right circumstances
There's no other restrictions on the kinds of characters to include, just anyone you wanted to come on further adventures in the TARDIS
Nominations will close in 24 hours (17:15 BST (UTC+1), 13/10)

question since I havent done anything like this before - do people want a mention to say they nominated a bird? e.g. Bird Option 1, nominated by X.
may as well use this as an opportunity to test the poll mechanism

They have this annual award at my work that is some corporate bullshit about recognising the employee who has made a significant contribution to the company and it's usually won by someone who is moving into a management role after being there for like a decade BUT while the winner is decided by the bosses the nominations are made by people working there and even though I have only been there 18 months and am decidedly not managing anything at all I found out today that apparently I got a half dozen different nominations so while I am almost certainly not going to win the actual award I have to imagine this means they will instead crown me Miss Congeniality and give me a tiara for being the friendliest most specialest girl in the factory.

thinking about it now, Charles Melton should've been nominated for best supporting actor instead of Ryan Gosling as Ken
This might be a hot take here on tumblr dot com buuuuuuuuut
I think Ryan’s nomination is actually deserved.
If we accept the premise of the Oscars, and accept the existence of the Barbie movie, Ryan as Ken could have come off as ridiculous and try-hard but it didn't. My one quibble is that he is too old to play Ken opposite Margot as Barbie (there is ten years difference between them, and there's only so much that makeup and moisturizer can do) but other than that, Ryan Gosling absolutely has the comedy chops and by my count he delivered an adequately charming performance.
This is an aside but something that's getting lost in the hashtag white feminism conversation is that it is narratively absurd that the film industry has rewarded the less important guy but not the literal lead girl from the feminism 101 movie. It feels intellectually dishonest to not acknowledge how on the nose this is. We can talk more about this on @fandomshatewomen if people wanna get into it.
Back to your message though, if we’re exploring hypotheticals, how about we look at the rest of the list of noms:
Tumblr media
Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things
Robert Downey Jr for Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling for Barbie
Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon
Sterling K Brown for American Fiction
If we are swapping out someone on this list, my personal choice would be Robert De Niro, backup option Robert Downey Jr.
Both of these men are already household names, and this was not either of their best work or tbh even like among their better work. Also, neither of them “needs” this nomination, it does nothing for their careers.
But for an actor like Charles Melton who is good at his job but very much at the beginning of his career, it could mean a meaningful increase to the money his agents can negotiate for him on subsequent projects. Like yes, numbers vary, but the “awards bump” is a thing, and proportionally speaking it would mean WAY more for his career than one of the Roberts.

I ended up getting Nicki, and she arrived today!
Tumblr media
she’s super cute! I got pretty lucky and her eyelashes are placed pretty well. I LOVE her meet outfit - not only is it super cute, but the fabrics all feel really nice, and it comes with more pieces than I generally expect from modern ag. The shirt and dress are separate, and the flannel is a regular doll shirt with functional buttons (!!). Her shoes are nice, but I watched a review on YouTube where they said the material felt like one that would start disintegrating with age, like a lot of older ag shoes, and I concur. Her accessories are also super cute, but I really wish historicals still came with a coin 😭
I read her journal, and it’s pretty cute! However, I stand by both my assessment that ag is sidestepping harder hitting historical events due to them seeming too sensitive, which like. If the past is so recent you can’t comfortably write about the realities of it, wait a few years -_- It read more like a goty story to me: more focused on relationships and inner conflict.
On the other hand, I also stand by my opinion that the switch to journals is totally fine, if not good. Ag’s target demographic has gotten younger, and the reading level of the books that come with dolls should reflect that imo. Also, if the name “journal” is tripping you up, it’s actually just a graphic novel, not like. An actual journal without a story. It had a similar feel to me as something like diary of a wimpy kid. There was also a section where “nicki” explained how to make zines, which was really cute.
Content-wise, it was fun, though a bit tame compared to other historical books (nickis anxiety about y2k was a nice character moment, but it alone does not make y2k a incredibly major historical event lol). My only big complaint with the story itself was the fact that they got their pets for Hanukkah. Like. I thought we all knew giving kids pets as gifts is a bad thing???? Not a huge fan of that. On a lighter note, Nicki loves lists (as do I!) and I thought it was a really fun detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Guys, I think she might possibly love lists.)
However, I do have another problem with the journals - it seems like the book that’s coming out will be the exact same story, based on the name 😭 on the last page, it said to look out for the book, called “Isabel and nicki: countdown to y2k” which is like. The plot of the journal I just read lol

While part of the blame lies in me not realizing when submissions were open and not putting his name in, I’m surprised that our buddy Eric Tony didn’t get in. This man NEEDS a hug, I could write an essay on not only why this man needs a hug, but how said hug would have a large positive impact on his life as opposed to other characters who, while definitely huggable, aren’t in the situation of needing a hug and thus there are less “hug dividends” as it were.
ngl, I'm kinda surprised no one nominated him. Bro really does need a hug.
