WORD VOMIT RE: Jet's attitude towards his decisions.
another reason i wanna kiss whoever wrote and directed jet's episode is the fact in the cartoon, jet was absolutely hyped about blowing up the dam and knew deep down it was bad because he shielded the gaang from it even if he was upfront with the freedom fighters and confirming with the duke that innocents would die but thats the price --- but still later smiling and saying theyre going to have a great victory over the fire nation after sokka is taken away.
in the liveaction, the cockiness jet has is when he's amused the gaang thinks they're slick for trying to sneak in, when he's helping them sneak in because he thinks its amusing and a helping hand, and the face of a threat: when the fire benders are found waiting for him in the forest to kill him for spying on them and hes ready to fight them back. Then, he's smiling at the camp when he's announcing who they are and what their goal is: freedom and protecting their home because no one else has their back.
Outside of this, Jet is very somber and expresses a lot of stress. For example, when he stops Katara from making herself known too early when Sai is talking to the spy then when Katara confronts him. What really stood out to me was when Katara walked up and Smellerbee was exchanging a look with him. They both looked really stressed and uncomfortable before she even came around the corner, but then especially. The look Smellerbee gave to Jet really said a thousand words, like they've been having a lot of discussions about involving her in their mission and an almost 'I told you so.' (sidenote: they did a wonderful job with nonverbals). Jet immediately puts his foot down about it not being the time then also not denying what he was doing when confronted. When he explains why he’s doing it, even as he smiles a little when saying they know how to take out the trash, its spoken with so much ire because he’s doing what he feels he needs to — and it hurts its your own people that let you down. He smiles because he’s in pain and overall feeling of ‘This is what happens when these people think they could get away with it. They have us to reckon with.’
What was significant to me was the lack of ego. This was someone who had full understanding that what he was doing wasn't something to boast about, but a building frustration tying with "IF NOT US, WHO?" What Katara didn't understand was the difference between herself and Jet, what defines being 'the good guy.' Jet was someone so acutely aware of his lack of privileges and the fear that drives the 'hard decisions' for the sake of collective. Hard decisions that put the very people you're trying to protect at risk because they were in the wrong place and the wrong time, but more would be at risk if they didn't act immediately. It's ugly, messy, imperfect -- and Jet is aware. He is not excited about any of this. Instead, he's pissed he feels he has no other choice because no adult after his parents did anything to help him. So it's all up to him, to him. ((cartoon implied these attitudes but I still spent years trying to get it through jet anti’s heads ))
And assassinating a KING and almost effortlessly succeeding is ... quite something. Impulsive, but pretty impressive. Sad, too, that it would be so easy. Everything Jet had to say about Bumi in this universe was true. Bumi lost his nerve, he was surrounded in privilege, he wasn't doing anything to really stop the corruption, and he fell into despair. Sure, Aang got through to him. Sure, Sai changed his ways and drew away from his treason with risk following. Sure. But we know what's going to inevitably happen, unless they decide to change it: Bumi happily lets Omashu get overtaken by the Fire Nation and orders all his guards to "do nothing" without any explanation. We better see Jet in Season 2 talk about his perspective here because the changes they did have me buzzing with theories. He would be livid and seemingly 100% right about King Bumi. ((Unfortunately, he is also destined to die before finding out about Bumi's plans to take Omashu back the day of the solar eclipse, but it doesn't matter because Jet would not have forgiven him for that terror.))
Anyway, they did a great job humanizing him while making him a foil to her. In the original, Jet was Sokka's foil, but I think it works so well to make him Katara's -- as they both become the most vocal and impulsive social justice activists. So seeing them fight and discuss what it meant to be a 'traitor' and 'unforgivable' was fascinating. They were actually able to have two separate discussions on the matter -- one where Katara confronted Jet to call him a traitor and when Jet confronted Katara to call her one in return.
I love how in the original, Sokka was able to prove he is a good leader in his own way by showing empathy for all and not willing to risk innocent lives ever, which gets Aang and Katara's respect after so much ridicule and comparisons. In contrast, I also love how they decided to go an alternate route because with Jet's impact on Katara that had such a lasting impression, this change did their dynamic justice. It sets up season 2 very well in how they'll engage with each other again.
I also love how Katara is able to reflect on Jet with criticism, but also understanding and a moment of gratitude. It feels a lot better than his simple flattery followed with manipulating her for her powers, and audiences feeling unsure how much of his flirting was genuine. Mind you, helps her story and establishes trust issues around being used (factors into her other plotlines), but it's such a disservice to Jet in return. I'm a big advocate of 'you don't have to completely demonize and ruin a character for the sake of uplifting another, the other should be able to stand on their own.'

Why I’ve been inactive / What’s been going on with me
I’m sorry, this is going to be a long post. You might have noticed that throughout the months I have been very infrequently posting after claiming I want to be more active, and here’s why. This is not me attempting to beg / guilt trip / ask for sympathy, it is merely an explanation. I apologize if you don’t want to see this kind of thing, but I really thought I should let everyone know what’s going on.
(Continued below the cut)
Throughout the years of me posting under the username “Saveraedae,” I have been through so much. I’ve made so many friends, accomplished many goals that I had set for myself, had a lot of fun; My joy has always came from creating things and sharing them with others and seeing you all enjoy them with me. However… throughout said time I’d also been battling with a lot of personal issues. For one, I had come to notice that with creating and developing a series, something that I had always dreamed of doing ever since I could remember, brought a lot of hardships. Namely, pressure; I am aware that I do things quite differently than most cartoon creators. I wouldn’t really call my reach huge by any means, but I do know a lot of indie creators would kill to have people so dedicated and interested in their series and lore, especially people who stick around for years and years. But back to the point, I essentially wasn’t private with the development of my work. This lead to me getting an audience for myself quite early and in turn having loads of feedback from onlookers during its creation. Now, like I said, lots of indie creators would kill for this sort of thing. But let me tell you, while I am forever grateful and definitely do not want to give the wrong impression, having attention to this degree so early on is both a blessing and a curse.
“How is this bad?” You may ask, “Isn’t getting attention for your work a good thing?” Let me explain.
I began to develop these characters when I was twelve. I turn twenty in 2 months. Let that sink in. Throughout my whole teenage years I had spent my life being praised and even worshipped in some cases for creating TMS. (No, this is not an exaggeration, there were seriously people who referred to me as a god among other things in a joking yet semi unironic context) I had asks flooding my inbox daily; people discussing amongst each other headcanons, ship arguments, and simping hard for characters; consistently got fanart sent to me; It really was a lot, and I absolutely loved it. Talking with other people in a community that I had built and watching it grow really was a dream come true, I had people to talk about what meant most to me and other people could share my sentiments. However, things would not always be like this. People eventually move on, this is the dark side that people don’t realize when building a community around a creation. That’s not to say people aren’t interested anymore if they leave or become less invested in a fandom, but if they no longer make themselves noticed, the support becomes transparent; They no longer comment, interact with my posts, send asks, etc. Engagement lowers when you can’t see the support. And in turn, my self esteem, motivation, and drive to do anything at all also lowers.
Now, this issue is very morally grey to say the least, I wouldn’t say anyone is at fault, it’s more an issue of circumstance. Everyone knows that TMS is my pride and joy and I want nothing more than to be happy creating it and watch others enjoy it as well. But if you’ve read to this point now, you can probably tell that at the moment I’m just not happy. I won’t even lie, I’m just not happy with the way things have been going lately. I’ll attempt to subtly hype something up, post a new lore tidbit, tease something that I’d to come, draw something that seems fanservice-y, anything, and yet it comes and goes without fanfare. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I know there’s people who like TMS out there, I see each and every one of you, and I’m more than grateful that you like the one thing that means the most to me. But take a look at my numbers lately, not just on tumblr. My posts on average barely break 5 notes. Maybe they’ll get 10 on a good day. Really my breaking point though that lead me to thinking this way though was my latest YouTube video; After it had been up for a week it had barely even broken 300 views. Really!? Anyone could see clear as day that I have nearly 10,000 subscribers. The video was a silly little animation that in the long run means nothing to me, but there is no way that that was right??? Stuff like this has made me cease or slow down on my bigger projects in fear of them not doing well. If I put a lot of effort into something only for it to flop or not get much feedback, there is not really much of a drive for me to do it at all. Things like this have been a pattern lately though, this was just the icing on the cake. When I get little to no engagement or no reactions to my content, I just feel like I’m disappointing people or that I’m not good enough. Of course I do try, I try my hardest, but when I do all I can and in return get radio silence, it makes me wonder if I did something wrong. Things weren’t always like this, so what happened? I know that people support me, but for some reason my mind and body doesn’t think it’s enough to move forward, and I just go into week long depressions, come back for a few days supper motivated and productive, then fall back into the same cycle again. I’m not enjoying this as much as I used to, and I really believe it’s because I don’t see other people enjoying it like they used to either. When I look back at things from 2015-2017 I have such fond memories and remember how fun things were. When I compare to now, it just looks depressing, let’s be honest. I’ve always tried to pinpoint where exactly the problem began, and I’m fully aware of where it truly started: The creation of the TMS discord server.
Now I have met, grown close to, and learned of quite a bit of people since the creation of the original server back in 2017. Fun fact, it was actually originally only created for the cast as a sort of ‘alternative’ to our Skype hangout until one fan/soon to be friend of mine wanted to talk to us, but didn’t have Skype (as there was a small and short lived TMS fan Skype group) Ever since then, the Discord server was open to the public and soon got turned into the TMS fan server. Mid 2017 was when it was created, and late 2017 is when it took off and began to grow in members. …Guess when my engagement on tumblr began to drop? It’s taken me a long time to realize, but the community became essentially “gated off” to the public, and people couldn’t see what it truly was anymore; It’d essentially gone private. I started to post more exclusive content into the server since it was easier to reach people in there, and began to post less to my public socials. People began to interact with my posts less and less, and soon, my engagement dropped dramatically. Let me tell you if you are not in the server, there are many more talented artists and people in the fandom than meets the eye, I’m honestly… not sure why people seem shy when posting their TMS stuff to the public. Like… are you ashamed to be into it or something? Is it not good enough for you to be publicly interested in it? Are you just pretending to like it so much just to humor me? I just don’t understand posting stuff only in the server if you claim you care about the growth of the community... But whatever the reason may be, this kind of stuff is the other thing that brought me to this point. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but like… what? This baffles me. I don’t want to seem like I’m taking anything for granted, but things like this make me want to delete the server and see if people will actually come to my blog again like years ago. I do like getting to meet individual people, but I don’t know anymore.
Moving forward, I don’t know what I’m going to do to combat this feeling. I’ve only really had support in the few people I’ve trusted and confided this information to, because I’ve always felt like if I publicly said this I’d just be seen as selfish, and I know I’m gonna get it, but with the pattern constantly continuing like I said, it just doesn’t feel like I’m enough; So I’m saying it here too. I’m sorry if this makes you think any less of me, or disappoints you, I really have thought hard before making this post. But yeah. I’m not quitting development of TMS obviously, as like I’ve made sure to reiterate, is what matters most to me, but i just wanted to share my feelings. I’m going to try and take it slow for a little while and see if things look up. Just to let people know though, don’t be shy to reach out to me if you want me to see something or you want to talk to me.

@musemelodies asked:
💭 (THE NINETIES.)
Tumblr media
It’s a headache. It’s an absolute headache. Things were nice with the occasional rerelease. The hype was real and the neon lights of the eighties was beautiful. He felt kind of alive. Sure the merchandise was scarce but... This feels even cheaper than the eighties did. V-H-S? He peers across the table at the rest of his chosen family. There’s going to be a big photoshoot and touch-ups. Why do they need touch-ups? Their muted colors always suited them just fine, but... He glances over to Snow White worriedly. It’s her dress. It isn’t “the right look”. Something about “restoration”. Hogwash. Grumpy’s beat him to the punch as he glances over the contract again. It would put them back in the spotlight. There would be more children with eyes on them than ever and they would stay in homes this time. But... No more rereleases. That feels odd. Pinocchio had a rerelease but that didn’t seem to work too well and honestly, it was only because they couldn’t squeeze out a feature in time... Poor fellas, they just happened to be the scapegoat. But there were lovely prints... Maybe collector’s items in a few years time! Now that most people have these machines, they can stay at home and watch the old films. So they just aren’t popular enough for a nice night out, is it? They’re just not that colorful enough to feel new? Is there any choice? He’s seen some of the newer toons. They’re nice enough. They’re pleasant enough. But they’re bright. Some of them feel a little... Shallow. Some are wonderful. Some only seem to have been brought to life to parrot what the kids learn in school. Some are hold-outs from the 70s and 80s when melting your mind was the point of some cartoons. The paper rattles again as he glances over the terms. He’s still not sure at having his colors touched up. He’s happy with his muted reds and oranges. Blood orange. Pretentious. They’ll think that, too. “If the princess agrees... I ‘pose we’ll sign. Fer ev’rything.” Photoshoots for posters, toys, and the works. This is going to be one huge headache... He tugs at his tunic. “Jus’ in time for the holidays all ov’r ‘gain. Like ol’ times.” It’s a mixed feeling. Once the agents talk his ear off more, he walks around the studio and glances around. It’s all changed. Nothing is ever so simple as it used to be. He’s happy that they don’t cut corners but there’s grand displays for musical numbers. Is that really the best way? Sure, it’s good for Broadway but this was never Broadway... Nothing wrong with a touch of the stage but does it lose the message? He sits there, adjusting his hat while he waits for the others and sighs. It’s still where he belongs. There’s just been some growing pains. But where does he end up in the scheme of things? Maybe that’s why he stays in their own cottage far away from the studios and the city. Nobody knows what to do with them anymore and no one wants to pay attention. He can’t help but wonder if this is going to fail. But once upon a time, children needed someone to look up to. They had Dorothy, Snow White, and very few others. Maybe they were still needed by those who still hadn’t found there way. Or as Grumpy had announced, that was hogwash.

kick it!au x nct 127
more like punk!au 127, but it’s inspired by the n version of the album!
taeyong
only heir to one of seoul’s biggest tech businesses, but no matter how much his parents try to get him to act like one
he really could give a rats ass about it
sometimes his parents think he’s doing it on purpose - the over the top outfits and the heavy music
the skipping out on important meetings, the hanging out with people who don't even imagine what kind of tax bracket his parents are in
but taeyong just cant bring himself to want to give his whole life away
to slaving over some company in some high office in a building so far off from the wonders life has to offer
he’d rather run around and experience what he can while he’s young and his body can handle it
so for a while, he just runs away - it sets of a massive panic throughout the city of seoul as his parents send out search teams and private investigators
and the police are put on the case
you watch the news and sigh, spotting taeyong spread out like a comfortable cat on your couch
“you know sooner or later they’re going to find out you’re here.”
“no they won’t. you were an intern in our legal department - you never even officially met me.”
he answers, playing with the threads off of his holed up tshirt before sitting up
“hey - if you really don't want to be involved in this, just run away with me to London like i offered.”
you take a bite of toast
“won’t that just get me more involved - we’ll both become fugitives. well i will, you’ll probably be saved by your parents money.”
taeyong’s eyes darken and his beautiful features fall sullen
you hear him hit the back the pillow with a soft thud
“i wish i wasn't living my life on the back of my parents - it’d make everything so much easier.”
you get up, leaning over the couch to look down at him
you met him when you’d gotten fired from your internship actually
why? because you threw hot coffee on some creep manager trying to feel you up and taeyong, who’d been passing by the floor, had watched mesmerized as you’d yelled at him for even thinking of touching you
it was the most badass thing he’d ever seen and when you were dragged away and tossed out of the building
he’d run up to you and offered to help you out
you thought he was saying he’d get you your job back - which you didn’t want because you didn’t want to work with creeps
but taeyong had actually meant getting you a favor at another company
even if he was a punk kid with no interest in business, he was still pretty charismatic with the other kids his age with parents in high places
he was the reason you had a comfortable life now - so when he shoed up on your doorstep you couldnt say no
now you’re looking at him and he’s looking up at you - the lost look in his eyes makes you so sad
“i cant run away with you anywhere, but you’re welcome to stay here for as long as you want.”
his lips turn up in a smile but before you can pull back he leans forward and you feel the softness of his mouth brush yours
you freeze with your hands digging into the couch and taeyong puts out his own palm on your cheek
“what if i wanna stay here with you forever?”
his tongue runs along the outline of your bottom lip and you feel the strength in your arms sort of fade
“are you doing this just to piss off your par-”
you start when you pull back, but he shakes his head and taeyong is not good at lying
“no. im doing all of this because i do want to be with you.”
jaehyun & johnny
guitarist and drummer of their garage punk band that they started in highschool together
to be honest, johnny had suggested it as a way to get themselves more popular - and jaehyun had thought it’d be a fun way to pass the long summer days
but now they’re actually pretty well known in the underground scene
and have went on to play booked shows in packed bars and events
they even have self designed merch which is kinda,,,well,,,,their fans love them anyway lol
you’re actually a server at one of the bars they play pretty frequently, and even though most of the crowd is pushed up on the stage when they play
there are some stragglers or bored significant others who occupy the tables in the back and who you have to deal with
they usually complain to you about the loud, thrashing music - but you have to say - you kind of dig the duo’s chaotic energy
plus jaehyun always looks handsome in leather black jeans and hair slicked back, while johnny looks just as enticing with disheveled brown long bangs and a right sleeve full of tattoos
you think some of the people in the crowd don’t even fancy the music that much either - the two musicians are pretty much a sight to enjoy on their own
you actually favor,
jaehyun - the guitarist and the main singer who always looks cold and put together
you sometimes akin him to more of like a businessman than a punk musician
but he really does have a lovely voice when he isn’t screaming into a mic
also - he tips better than most people - when he comes back to the bar to get a drink after the show
fans usually follow behind him like ants on honey
but he always makes it a point to get a few minutes before them so he can chat with you
his questions are usually about how you like the songs, you have the sneaking suspicion he’s the one who writes them
and you always enjoy the moments before his hoard attacks him
one evening you collect his bill and are surprised at the large tip again - but also at his number scrawled at the bottom and a question
thinking of writing my first love song, i think you can really help with that.....if you’d want to.
johnny - the drummer and the wilder part of the two
he’s got tattoos and is always jumping around and throwing drumsticks into the crowd
he looks like a mess when he’s up there, feeling the music and going insane with the fans cheers
but when he gets off stage he has those long sweaty bangs in his face
and usually is missing a part of his shirt that either tore or was torn off
he always finds you after, when you run back to the kitchen which is beside the back of the stage
usually for more snacks for the bar - and he always coaxes something free out of you
you like his one-liners and genuinely happy smile so you dont mind
and sometimes he tells you about a new tattoo or a new city he’s going to get or visit
one evening he stops you when all you’ve got is a wine bottle in hand and asks if you have a second
you agree and follow him into a part behind stacked speakers and almost drop the wine when he pulls his shirt up by his teeth
through muffling you understand him saying “look, i got my first hip tat!”
you see the tiger that’s disappearing down below his belt
“how big is the whole thing?!”
you ask and he winks, letting his shirt fall back down
“well if you want to see the whole thing - why don’t i wait for outback later?”
you agree - only to think about it ten minutes later and be like
OH
taeil
employee at the local vintage records shop
the owner pretty much entrusts all of the store to taeil, whose music taste is highly respected in the community and is also very very,,,,,,,very specific
but unlike most people who love to come in here and argue about what genre or band or artist is the best
he just likes to,,,,,,,,vibe
which is why people feel either comfortable around him - because he’ll listen to them rant with a smile as he checks them out
or kinda weirded out because like - does he ever raise his voice above a softhearted whisper?!?!
pretty cute with his blonde mullet and pretty silver earrings - a loved flannel over his shoulders
because of taeil’s work and the general popularity of vintage records as an aesthetic, the shop gets a little more busy
and so the owner hires you - who unlike taeil who favors ska-punk and beach vibes
you are a strictly heavy metal person
the grimier - the better
and when you start working your job, you cannot handle taeil’s playlist
and you can’t handle his laidback attitude to match
so you always have something to say - half because you mean it but also half because you want some reaction from taeil
but taeil never does, if you spend half an hour shittalking the album he picks he just kind of shrugs it off
if you put on some swedish death tunes - he just lets you play the music without a comment
you guys look kind of funny next to each other because he’s just punky dad chic and your wardrobe is bleak and black
people can tell where your favorite sections are and they are on opposite sides of the store
one afternoon, you’re begging the store owner to buy copies of this obscure band most people dont care about but who you LOVE for the store
he keeps saying no because he’s pretty sure no one will buy it
when taeil strolls in for his shift
the boss turns and asks taeil for his opinion and you give up completely because
there’s no way he’s gonna ask the boss to order a heavy metal record-
“yes, let’s order it. i trust their taste.”
taeil smiles your way before turning the corner
the boss sighs and pats your shoulder, promising he’ll put it on the list for the next order
you just stand there, before breaking from your shock to find taeil
you do - he’s unpackaging new goods - and gives you a soft, happy smile when you call out his name
“why’d you stand up for me back there? you hate my music.”
“i never said i hated it.”
you scrunch up your nose
“so you’re a heavy metal fan now?”
“no, but you are and if you like it then it’s good right?”
you don’t understand, confused you say again - “but you hate it-”
he puts down the record in his hand and turns toward you
he tilts his head and goes,
“but i don't hate you, in fact i like you quite a lot so im willing to put up- i mean listen to the music you like because i know it makes you happy.”
the words swirl around in your head and you feel something warm flood into your veins
“you ,,,, like me a lot?”
“yes, i thought it was obvious how shy i was around you.”
you try not to laugh in disbelief, because you’re pretty sure he’s never even changed his facial expression since you started here
but whatever - you kinda like that (a lot) about him too
yuta
your local back alley tattooer and piercer
not actual back alley, more like in his apartment, but still - does he have a license for this? who knows
he loves doing colorful, crazy pieces - usually with a magical element or a pinup style
and if you give him a big project, he goes absolutely nuts on it
he himself has tattoos up the back of his neck and all the way down to his ankles
he has almost thirteen piercings' in one ear, with his infamous tongue piercing, bellybutton, and two studs above his hipbones
pain doesn’t exist for him - and neither do boundaries when it comes to art or fashion
he’s almost always photographed or stopped when he goes outside
long hair up in a bun, he pulls out one of the sticks holding it and is like “it’s also a pocket knife if i click here-”
thick collar, long skirts or ripped up sweaters
he’s a very fun person to both work with or just be around LOL
you don’t really think that though - actually you’re super nervous when you see him
your friend though, the one who insisted on coming to yuta for their nose piercing, is hyped
she’s buzzing around him - getting excited and also flirting
but for someone reason ,,, he keeps looking over her shoulder at you
“well, let me get the needle ready-”
he starts and you ask if it’s been sterilized
he laughs in response and your friend shushes you
but something feels all weird about this
you lean in to her as yuta gets his instruments ready
“do you really want this? why don’t you just get another ear-”
“don’t worry! it’ll be fine!”
you hear a voice chime in behind you both, “exactly - it’ll be peachy.”
you bite your lip as you watch yuta approach but just as you want to make sure again
your friend sees the needle and
passes out
you catch her - eyes wide and scared
“wh-oh my god! we need a doctor!”
Yuta sighs, rolling his eyes and putting the needle back down
he takes your friend from your arms and lays her down on the couch nearby
“no we don't. ill get some ice.”
“she’s passed out! what do you mean we don’t - we need to call-”
“it happens all the time.”
he disappears and then shuffles back in with an icyhot, he drops it in your hand and you stare at him
he pulls up a chair and sits down in it, “she’ll be back up in a couple minutes. we just have to wait.”
you’re skeptical - now more than ever - but you place the ice on her forehead and sit back up
“sooo, are you also looking to get a piercing?”
he suddenly inquires, leaning his elbows on his knees and giving you a look that makes you feel like you’re being seared under a lamp
“w-what, no. she just asked me to come along for support.”
“you’d look good with a nose piercing, or maybe a lip piercing, or the shy types always get something crazy like-”
his eyes drop down a little lower and you huff, fighting off a weird buzz in your chest
“no! i don't want any, and i don't want to be convinced either thank you.”
he shrugs and sits back
“you sure? not even i offer to do it for free?”
you roll your eyes, “does free mean free or is there a clause missing?”
“free means you pay nothing, but maybe you’ll consider getting coffee with me.”
this catches you off guard - you nearly lose grip on the icyhot on your friends forehead when you turn to him
“s-sorry, are you flirting with me while my friends passed out on your couch?!!??”
yuta grins
“yeah, i am. isn’t that normal?”
doyoung
politically outspoken activist, nazi stomper, no bullshit from anyone graduate student
doesn’t look punk on the outside but put on his headphones and it’s straight up songs about anarchy only
won’t tell anyone where the secret little tattoo he got is, but people place bets on where and what they think it is
jaehyun thinks it has to be like a quote from chomsky but taeil thinks it might be something sappy and sentimental like a flower for his mom
it’s actually just a cool looking sword on the side of his ribs that he got half because he wanted to prove he could take the pain LOL
he really doesn’t fuck around when it comes to his beliefs though - like he doesnt think it’s radical to want human rights for everyone and if anyone wants to get in his face about it
then he will get back in their face about it
and listen he’s gotten into some fights, and even though he’s mostly lank and brains - he’ll take a punch with pride and throw his own if anyone says some dumb shit in his vicinity
“you look more like a prep then a punk” someone once comments and doyoung doesn’t even bat an eyelash to retort “i don't need a mohwak to fight for respect. and ill have you know - i do own a leather jacket so shove it.”
you’re a student in one of doyoung’s classes who thinks he’s really cool, but also intimidating
his dark eyes and lack of humor kind of make him unapproachable, but also pretty attractive
you’re kind of sad that you can’t talk to him about upcoming ralies and class work because you don’t know what you two could have in common
when one day you and doyoung arrive to class early and suddenly the quiet classroom is full of loud, hard, punk rock
you turn around and doyoung’s big eyes are somehow even bigger
“m-my bluetooth disconnected. sorry.”
he scrambles to turn down the volume, but you jump up
“you like rage against the machine? i love them!”
doyoung perks up
“really, usually people tell me they’re outdated and don’t fit well,,,,you know - how i look.”
you shake your head, “who cares what you look like - their music started a movement!”
you move your seat up closer to doyoung and ask if you can see his playlist
he shows it to you proudly and before you know it you two are in a deep discussion about bands and music and shows
the professor and students trickle in and before you know it it’s time for class to start
before it does, you happily exclaim to doyoung
“i didn’t think we’d ever have something in common - im so happy i can talk to you now!”
“you couldn’t talk to me before?”
doyoung takes note of the blush that dusts your cheek and the way your fingers twitch in your lap
“ah - i just, you know it’s hard to talk to someone you like.”
doyoung is about to ask that you say that again, just so he can confirm it and get that giddy feeling again
but the professor starts the lecture
too bad the whole time doyoung can’t help but steal looks at you - counting down the minutes till the class is over and he can ask you to come with him for lunch
you guys can listen to music and,,,,,,,maybe talk about how to change the political world,,,,,together <3
jungwoo
definitely flunking a lot of his classes, but so pretty when you look passed the crazy orange hair that no one blames him for it
he’s always falling asleep behind textbooks
and doodling butterflies or whatnot in the corners of his notes
he loves baggy clothes, decorated with pins and paint, every now and then he’s even got little bandages on his cheeks and fingers
he looks like he came out of a cartoon - delicate features and colorful clothes
he opens his locker and love notes fall out no matter what day it is
and his headphones keep getting confiscated by teachers
he should technically be your biggest enemy
considering he breaks uniform violations, doesn’t do his homework, and frequently hangs out in the halls when he should be there
and you’re a prefect that’s got straight A’s
but you,,,,,,,just cannot be mad at jungwoo
anyone else, you’re the first to hand out detention slips or lug them into the deans office
but with jungwoo - there’s what you’d just call favoritism
people think it’s kind of hilarious though because you’re trying so hard to hide your crush on jungwoo but it’s so obvious
and jungwoo is so clueless about your crush and the fact that you give him so many slides that when people complain about how he didn’t get in trouble but they did for doing the SAME thing
he’s like huh what?
you keep getting told to stop being so lenient with him, he’s not going to learn if he’s not told he’s doing something wrong
but when you’re faced with him again
that big puppy smile and the cute little flower studs in his ears
you just cant
you just shoo him out of the sight of any other prefects or teachers so he wont be caught
one afternoon as you’re checking the halls during study period - you spot jungwoo hanging out on the ledge of the window to the top floor
beside him is a half eaten sandwich and a forgotten book
he looks so picturesque you feel guilty interrupting him
but you know you’re not the only one on duty so you touch his shoulder gently
“jungwoo, kun might find you if you’re just sitting here.”
“you found me.”
he says with a gentle smile
“yes, but you know i don’t want you to get in trouble - so do you think you can go up to the roof?”
he nods, gathering his things and as you turn to leave, he takes a hold of your wrist and tugs you behind him
“wh-”
but it’s too late, you’re already up the stairs and being pulled through the roof’s door
jungwoo twirls you around and you want to tell him you have to get back to your job
when he pulls you against his chest
“j-j-jungwoo?!?”
your face heats up as you squeak in shock
he stares down into your eyes - the usual gloss of dreaminess seems a little more serious
“do you like me?”
your heart feels like it has stopped in your chest - no matter who’d asked you about your crush before, it was never jungwoo himself so it was always easy to lie
“wh-why are you asking me?”
he blinks, long dark lashes in contrast to his bright hair
“i want to know if you like me.”
“but why- y-you’ve never asked me before.”
“because.”
he shrugs, saying it as if it’s the easiest thing to admit in the world
“because i like you so if you like me too - i can ask you on a date.”
mark
skater boy who wants to go pro
spends hours in the park and in lots trying new tricks and just skating because if there’s one thing he loves
it’s the rush, the feel of the board and the air that passes by him as he cruises down the block
he’s pretty oblivious to the fact that he’s the most liked skater, maybe even person, in his neighborhood
because he will jump off his board to help old ladies cross the street and willing to bust it and eat dirt if a kid accidentally stumbles in front of him
he’s always kinda banged up, with something broken or sprained or slightly bloodied from messed up tricks or accidents
but he works it, along with the chino pants and old band tshirts and beanies
he secretly got his nose pierced last summer, but he’s gotta keep hiding it from mom and dad lol
he takes part in a lot of local competitions because he really wants to get his foot in the pro game
and (not surprising to anyone but him) he has a lot of local fans
some are just fellow skaters who love his happy attitude, others are lovestruck teenagers who think the sweet skater is prime boyfriend material (they’re right)
you aren’t a huge skating fan, you actually don’t know much about it, but you sometimes get dragged along with friends to the events
they’re free and it’s fun to pass the time
you’re at one, sipping a slushie and listening to your friends argue about the upcoming show
when you notice a boy in a beanie off the right of the course
he’s practicing flips, his skateboard a strong neon green with what you assume are his initials - ML
“who is that?” you ask offhandedly and your friends all answer in unison - “oh! that’s the favorite - mark lee.”
you are about to look away, but then you end up catching mark’s gaze
when your eyes lock - he smiles and it shows off the sweetness that you can see people would go crazy over
you nearly miss your slushie straw as you try to smile awkwardly back
for the first time, you’re extremely excited to see one of the runs - mark takes his position at the top of the ramp and you edge forward in your seat
your friends comment about it - but you’re not the only one getting hyped - it seems like the whole place is waiting to see him succeed
you hold your breath a little as he lands the first trick, then the next, then the next
its going so well and you think you might even just get up and cheer when right on the last second - he hits a rail and the board flies off - it leaves mark tumbling down
he catches himself with his hands but you can see the pain and shock spread over his face
the crowd gasps - but no one moves
actually, you’re waiting for EMTs or someone to show up - but it’s just mark limping up and chasing after his runaway board
“where are the doctors - or someone to help?”
you turn and your friends just shrug, “it’s not a super big event so they usually don’t have anyone.”
you don’t know what comes over you, you’ve seen people slam before at these things but this just feels different
you get up from your seat and push down through to the back the course
you find mark sitting out near the curb of the parking lot, nursing what you can guess is a pair of pretty hurt palms
and you rush over
“are you ok?”
he looks up at you and you notice he’s abandoned his beanie - black hair a wild mess
“ah yeah, no worries. ill be good for my second-”
all you have are the napkins from your slushie, which you use quickly to dab at the small cuts on mark’s hands
he’s so caught off guard by your sudden makeshift first aid, that mark just stares wide eyed as you try to help
“let me go find some ice or something, it looks like it really hur-”
“its ok! i fall all the time!”
you frown, “but your hands-”
he goes pink at the ears, because your voice is full of real concern, and plus he didn’t just smile so big at you before for no reason
you are as adorable from a distance as you are up close, probably even more actually
“im ok, thanks for worrying but i do need to get back to the course.”
you drop your hands from his and sigh, “ok. but after do you promise you’ll at least get some bandages?”
“promise.”
you nod and get up, watching mark stand with you and wince as he flips his board up into his hands
you still feel worried, but mark suddenly goes
“actually, would you mind coming with me after - i mean you don’t have to if you’re with your frie-”
“they won’t mind. of course ill come, at least that way ii know you didn’t go back on your promise!”
mark thinks your little laugh is the cutest thing hes heard in a while, it rings through his ears for the rest of the competition
and when he humbly places third, he finds you in the crowd - and shakes his board up at you
the whole row you’re in turns your way
your friends all raise their eyebrows
but you’re just thinking about getting him those bandages (and maybe getting his number?)
haechan
skater boy who is a pro
youngest in the scene right now with more than three world championship titles under his board
sponsored by monster energy, vans, hell even companies like samsung are looking to put their money in him
his videos have millions of views on youtube and everyone whose trying to get into skating sees him as an icon to worship
the only person to land some of the hardest tricks known in the sport on his first runs
always bright, with one little braid hanging from his hair - the mullet look was so well accepted by fans that he decided to keep it
(even had longtime friend and fellow skater jeno come over and dye it blonde for him)
and in general, he can take a fall like anyone - but when he does land his tricks he’s always bursting with energy and dance moves out on the course
you know him, how could you not, working as one of the go-pro camera crew for skating events
but when you’re assigned to be his follow along for the upcoming qualifiers being held in your city you almost lose it
because not only are going to get to film THE haechan, but you’re going to be so close to him for the entirety of the competiton too
the fan in you comes to life, but you try to keep your cool when the day comes - introducing yourself with a handshake and a big smile
you’re nervous but what you don’t expect (and don’t actually even notice) is haechan is too
because - oh god, this is the first camera person he’s ever gotten that is on THIS level of cute
you’re so caught up in trying to get the perfect footage of him, that you don’t see how he keeps peeking at you out of the corner of his eye
when he trips over one of his boards and nearly crashes into another skater you assume it’s pre-competition jitters
but it’s actually just because you’re getting quite close to him - and haechan hasn’t ever had butterflies LIKE this
five minutes before the competition goes live, he requests that his manager switch you and one of the other skaters camera crew
it’s so soul crushing - you’re kind of left in a blank shock - until your new skater is shaking your shoulders
you think you must have done SOMETHING,,,,,no one has ever complained about you before??? you didn’t think you were even being the slightest bit annoying - even though you were trying REALLY hard not to ask for at least an autograph??
you spend the entire competition overthinking it until finally - after haechan wins and is done with all his interviews and handshakes
you manage to track him down and immediately bow at a 90 degree angle
“im so sorry if i did something wrong, i really didn’t think you’d ask to switch - please tell me what i did to upset you so i don’t do it again!”
your head is still down and haechan suddenly feels like the trophy in his hand weighs a ton
he clenches his teeth and mutters
“you didn’t do anything,,,,,,your crime is just being really-”
you slam up and your eyes are big and shaking, haechan feels like the worst person on earth as he swallows
“your cime is just being really,,,,really,,,,,really,,,,,,cute.”
“p-pardon?”
your voice cracks, because you’re pretty sure you misheard him
he scratches his head, almost bonking himself on the temple with the trophy
charismatic always silly and shining haechan suddenly looks coy
“c-cute, you’re just really cute and i couldn’t focus on my tricks so - please don’t take it to heart.”
your stomach does a flip, both out of relief and out of disbelief
“o-oh,,,,i-- well - im sorry for being-”
“don’t apologize for being cute!”
you jump and nod, haechan signs and mumbles again
“i made you feel bad didn’t i? well,,,let me make it up to you and take you to lunch,,,”
you nearly drop your go-pro because
holy shit haechan is asking me out on a date,,,,,,in a roundabout way but,,,,,it’s definitely an invite for a date
“sure-id love to!”
haechan tries to hide his grin
but when his manager catches him twirling the trophy around and whistling with a dreamy look in his eyes later that day
well
it’s just obvious
someones in love

She-Ra S5 E07 - Perils of Peekablue
There might be spoilers for the rest of the season in this post!
I’ll start by saying upfront that I pretty much consider this to be the weakest episode of season 5 (or at least one of the weaker ones), even though it does move the plot along significantly. The main reason is that, as I said before, I don’t care about the group on Etheria as much as the group in space (with the exception of Scorpia and possibly Spinnetossa), so an episode like this - even though I get why it’s important - just won’t interest me as much as what the gang in space is up to.
That said, it’s not a *bad* episode or anything. Let’s get into it:
- The entire beginning scene where Adora tries to transform into She-Ra and the others keep interrupting her is absolute gold and I love everything about it. Especially Catra, OMG! The way she shows up and actually asks “Are we messing with Adora?” - She’s not even pretending to be helpful and I love that she’s bonding with Glimmer and Bow over “messing with Adora”. And how she then just flings herself onto Adora’s lap and brushes Adora’s face with her tail while cheekily saying “Yeah Adora, concentrate!” - brilliant, absolutely brilliant 🤣. And I also love how Adora doesn’t even try to push her off and actually holds her. These two are too cute.
- I also wonder if the “You can’t let distractions keep you from transforming” line was intentional foreshadowing for Shadow Weaver telling Adora that Catra’s a distraction.
- I like Catra’s new outfit! Well, it’s pretty much just her old outfit with a few adjustments. But still, nice! And she looks really cute with short hair.
- I feel like this beginning scene is pretty much here for two reasons: It sets up that Entrapta is trying to reach the rebellion on Etheria, which will be relevant at the very end of the episode, AND it shows Catra’s new outfit, so we can have a new opening now.
- Changes in the opening: Time for some really exciting mid-season opening changes! Catra’s missing from the villains’ card for the first time ever. Instead, Horde Prime’s hands are now closing around a glowing orb (I assume that’s meant to be the heart of Etheria). At the part where Catra and She-Ra fight, Catra now has short hair, She-Ra is in her new form, and instead of a snarl the fight ends with a soft smile between them (I’m not crying, you’re crying. Best opening glow-up ever! 😭). In the final heroes’ shot, Adora back to being She-Ra instead of Adora, but this time in her new form. And Catra is *finally* in the heroes’ shot as well. GOOD STUFF. (In general, I just LOVE that they actually kept updating the opening in the middle of the season. That is SO cool. But the change that really gets me is how they updated Catra and Adora’s fight, because that’s been the same since the beginning of the show and now it’s SO SWEET.)
- Okay, so my biggest problem with this episode is that the plan to find Prince Peekablue seems... kinda dumb? So they’re planning to sneak into an underwater soiree undercover and abandon everyone else at the camp to find a “hermit” no one has seen in ages because he might know where Adora and the others are? As a plan it just seems far-fetched. I get that they want to warn Adora and company that Prime is chipping people (they don’t know that Adora’s group already knows that), but how would finding Peekablue even help them achieve that? He could tell them where Adora and the others are, but... that’s it. It’s not like he can also magically communicate with Adora or anyone else. And didn’t Swift Wind tell the others last episode that Adora’s coming home and that he can feel her coming closer? So shouldn’t they already know that the group in space are on their way home? (Granted, Swift Wind told that to Micah, Frosta, Spinnerella and Netossa - but I’m assuming the rebels communicate with each other and Micah would have also told Mermista and the others?) I mean, idk how much time supposedly passed between these two episodes, so maybe it’s been a while since Elberon? Also, when did they even figure out that Horde Prime is chipping people? Last episode, Micah still said they had to “figure out what that was”. And if they know about the chips now, it might have been a good idea to check the necks of everyone at camp right away - though to be fair, they maybe didn’t realize how the chips work yet. And yeah, I am nitpicking here (and obviously the rebels have to mess up so things can go south this episode, so I guess they have to make some bad decisions.)
- That said, I love all of their outfits! And I like that Scorpia’s alias “Lynda D’Ream” is a reference to the 80s cartoon.
- Netossa’s lucky that she wears an outfit with such a high collar - makes it hard to put a chip on her neck. (Also, idk if I’ve said this before, but I love Spinnerella and Netossa’s character designs and outfits. They’re both fashion queens.)
- Just the fact that it really is Spinnetossa’s anniversary and Netossa thinks that’s why Spinnerella is acting strange - I mean, what are the odds?
- “They are my people! Which means that most of them have sworn revenge against me at some point.” Okay, that is pretty funny. And getting to meet all of Sea-Hawk’s exes was pretty funny, too. (Yeah, officially they’re not his exes but just people whose ships he set on fire... but come on, the subtext isn’t really subtle here.) And I love the whole running gag of him and Mermista fighting all of them behind the bar counter with Mermista doing most of the work and getting more and more annoyed with it - but when they’re finally done, it turns out there’s also someone there that *she* doesn’t want to see, because she set their ship on fire. Comedy gold.
- Scorpia is me at a party :( I also find it super hard to socialize and get into conversations with strangers. Very relatable there.
- I also love how the sweet flowergirl Perfuma has absolutely no problem blending in with a bunch of criminals.
- “You’re amazing. You have the biggest heart and you could do whatever you put your mind to.” Aww. I’m glad someone told Scorpia that!
- “You should do things not because you’re good at them, but because they make you happy.” That actually is some really good life advice. People should keep that mind in general.
- (I love how Sea-Hawk and Mermista are carrying Admiral Scurvy away in the background while Scorpia and Perfuma are having their heartfelt talk 🤣.)
- “Repeat after me: I can do this. I can do this.” “Perfuma can do this.” 🤦 I feel bad for laughing, but... gosh, Scorpia has some serious self-esteem issues.
- Okay, time for an unpopular opinion: I’m... not that into Scorfuma. There’s nothing wrong with it and I’m not against it or anything, but it just doesn’t particularly grab my interest. That excited feeling you get when you ship something just... isn’t there for me with them, sorry.
(I kinda felt like I had to explain/justify myself, so I started to write a small essay on my ships here that doesn’t really have anything to do with the episode. Feel free to just skip this part.)
I consider myself a multishipper and while my #1 OTP is definitely without a doubt Catradora, I also really have a soft spot for Scorptra (to the point where I’d say it’s probably my #2 after Catradora). And, to make it short, Scorptra vs. Scorfuma is one of those “fanon vs. canon” things for me, where what you want to see happen in canon isn’t necessarily what you find exciting or interesting to explore in fanworks. Obviously Scorptra was never going to be canon because Catradora is a thing, and I’m perfectly okay with that. And in canon, Scorpia getting out of a toxic friendship, moving on from her unrequited feelings, and finding love with someone else (who treats her right) is the right message to send, so I’m glad that’s where the show went. But when it comes to enjoying a ship in fanon (which is what I consider “shipping” to be), then I don’t pick my ships based on how healthy they are in canon, but on how much their dynamic fascinates me and just on whether that certain spark that makes me like a ship is there or not. And in that sense, Scorpia’s dynamic with Catra, which was explored over the course of 4 seasons, is just infinitely more fascinating and spark-inducing to me that her relationship with Perfuma.
And even beyond Scorptra - if I had to ship Scorpia with someone other than Catra, my first pick would be Entrapta. (Yes, I do ship Entrapdak, but like I said - multishipper here. Also, Entrapta has two hands!) And my first pick for who to ship Perfuma with would be Mermista because I like their bickering and I have a thing for opposites attracting.
Anyway, I’ve been rambling about ships for too long now. The bottom line is: I’m fine with Scorfuma being canon and it makes sense that they fit together since they’re very similar people. I don’t dislike it, I’m just not as hyped about it as many people seem to be. On with the episode now, please!
- “I guess I don’t know what a hermit is after all.” Yeah, Peekablue was giving off Double Trouble vibes from the beginning, tbh.
- I love how Netossa is competitive even at planning anniversary surprises.
- Perfuma loudly supporting Scorpia when she ends up on stage is a super nice moment, though. And Scorpia’s performance? Amazing!
- I wonder if Double Trouble made up that whole “She-Ra in space” vision because they were pretending to be Peekablue and just got it right by accident, or if they actually knew that much from their time pretending to be a clone. I wonder how much time they spent as a clone and what exactly they saw.
- Scorpia realizing it’s Double Trouble and then tricking and unmasking them was an amazing moment. So much for Scorpia not being smart!
- I was so excited to see Double Trouble again! Tough it makes me a bit said that they refered to Catra as their “cash kitten”. While they never made a secret out of being in it for the money, I kind of like the idea that they did care for Catra after all. (Do I just ship everyone with Catra? The answer is yes.)
DT: “I know where your friends are. And I’ll tell you - for a price, of course.”
Perfuma: *grows flower arm canon*
DT: “... Fine.”
😂😂😂 Love that.
- “It makes for a very dull audience when everyone’s mind-controlled.” Okay, but that really is a good reason for Double Trouble to help the heroes out without really changing their motivation. They’re still a Chaotic Neutral who doesn’t particularly care about morals - but it would make for a very dull audience if everyone was mind-controlled.
- “Prime is angry. She-Ra showed up and stole his little kitten away.” Like I said before, I LOVE that that’s the reason why Prime’s so pissed in the first place.
- The confrontation between Netossa and Spinnerella is so heartbreaking, but when she said “show me your neck” it again made me wonder why they didn’t check everyone’s neck at camp before.
- “What a shame we can’t be together... in Horde Prime’s light!” Ooohhh, it’s so creepy and angsty, I love it!
- And Mermista’s chipped as well because obviously things have to go south here.
- The parallel confrontations at camp and at the soiree are really cool scenes. I especially like the Spinnerella vs. Netossa fight. And Micah’s chipped as well, because things have to go wrong and Glimmer mentioned being “a day away from meeting her dad” - so obviously that has to be ruined now, too.
- “A little help? I need to lift my hand to the heavens.” Gosh, I love DT.
- Scorpia’s sacrifice made me tear up 😭. (When I first watched it, I was scared she was actually going to die and not just get chipped - I’d never have forgiven the show for that.)
- Can we talk about how strong Netossa actually is? She fought off both Spinnerella and Micah by herself, made a big enough net to cover all the chipped people, and got herself and Frosta out of there safely - I don’t want to hear anything about her powers not being strong again.
- “Happy anniversary.” Noooo, now I’m crying again... 😭😭😭 It’s so sad, but so romantic... (I really love that this season gave Spinnerella and Netossa more screentime. And I’m always here for some angst!)
- And finally, Perfuma is able to contact the group in space and warn them about the blockade. I really like that scene. I like that Perfuma specifically says “You need to stay away”, since we know what happened last time someone told Adora that. And the whole grim mood of Perfuma apologizing and saying the rebellion is compromised, the shaky pictures, the connection cutting off, and then the shot of the ship all alone in space and the silence - amazing. Basically, this episode was “things go very wrong on Etheria, and now the group in space has a serious problem”.
This was a good episode, overall. Like I said, the main reason I consider it weaker is because I care more about the group in space, and they were only here for one scene in the beginning and one in the end. But this was still pretty solid. It had some funny and sweet moments, and then some really cool and dramatic scenes in the end. And of course, it was a very important episode for the plot because things are now really not looking good on Etheria. My favourite moment was Catra sitting on Adora’s lap in the opening scene, though.

a guide to the secondary characters of 1917
inspired by @a-beautiful-struggle-of-life because saying “i wanna fall in love with all these characters too omg” is just such an open invitation and i couldn’t resist ♡♡♡
sergeant sanders: “yes, well, sorry to disrupt your crowded schedule, blake, but the brass hats didn’t fancy it in the snow.” the sergeant of blake and scho’s platoon. the one to first introduce us to our boys so we have to love him for it
lieutenant gordon: “a couple of little treats.” he’s soft. i love him. he’s just the hype man of erinmore, like does he want to agree with another one of his proverbs? another one of his quotes? another one of his shakespearean monologues that he learned off by heart at eton? no. he’s so tired. he doesn’t want to hear another fancy sentence in his life. “wouldn’t you say, lieutenant?” he wants to say i could not possibly give a smaller fuck, sir, but can he? no. let him sleep
sergeant: “YOU’RE GOING UP A DOWN TRENCH YOU BLOODY IDIOTS” he doesn’t have a name but MAN did he have a cultural impact. like he changed my world with that line. the delivery? the poise? the hint of a snarl? no one else could ever and i’m afraid that’s just the facts. he was probably mad because he just had a tiff with leslie and he got the day of the week wrong. he thought he had it this time. he didn’t. he never does
private kilgour: a bloody waste of space. THE softest boy. somehow managed a perfect :o in real life. how did he do it? no one knows. dermatologists HATE him. owns a cute scarf that he's managed to actually keep clean. probably has a blanket stashed somewhere. he’s just so, so gentle, he deserves nothing but good
lieutenant leslie: “for any sins thou hast committed.” you already know. you already KNOW. every time i saw this film there was someone who whispered “moriarty!” the first time it was me. he’s just so tired. a lieutenant shouldn’t be in command of a company. everyone is dead. his only friends are the orderlies he forces to hang out with him in his smelly dugout because all the other officers are in bits and pieces. the orderlies are trapped. they can’t escape him. gallows humour. he just needs a rest. we love him. was absolutely checking schofield out for the majority of their scene together. i've written about how they absolutely seem to have history and i'll say it again: they do. gay
the idiot who thought it was tuesday: one of the orderlies that leslie is holding prisoner solely to bully. when no one else is around they probably cuddle while leslie has a cry and the idiot who thought it was tuesday (TIWTIWT) comforts him and tells him he can do it
private atkins: “hey, it’s alright, it’s okay.” one of the two to find scho trying to haul blake’s body along. the gentlest giant. parry’s back-up, like he looks like he’d be in charge because he’s all big and tough-looking but then weedy, hot-headed little parry is the one doing the talking and atkins is just hovering behind him being soft. loves and supports his friends. they remind me so much of an iconic cartoon duo but i just can’t put my finger on it, but you just know they’d get into mischief because of parry and atkins is just “i don’t know about this” but of course he goes along with it
private parry: “you alright, mate?” he single-handedly made everyone in the cinema jump when some random english guy suddenly spoke when no one else was supposed to be around. he’s tiny but in charge and we truly do love to see it. lowkey feral vibes. you just know he’s a little bit chaotic and snarky and he’d challenge anyone twice his size to a fight, but he’s also gentle and worries about schofield so much when he doesn’t know him at all and i Love him the very most
captain smith: “it doesn’t do to dwell on it.” the dad. the warmest, most calming dad. gives great hugs. he’s tired because he has to spend all his time trying to keep parry and cooke apart because if they ever met and conspired all hell would quite literally break out, like they’d be too powerful together and he knows it. has a cane for the aesthetic. he’s completely traumatised but he has to keep it together for personal pride and for his boys
colonel collins: “they at least could have retreated with a bit of grace, BASTARDS.” i quote him daily. he truly is just the stuff of legends. we love to see it
colonel collins’ driver: “no, sir.” if he and lieutenant gordon ever met they wouldn’t even speak, they’d just fall asleep on each other. they’re both so exhausted by their superiors. when will they be free
private rossi: “welcome aboard the night bus to fuck knows where.” we love him!!!!!! we really do love him!!!!!!! scottish. soft. he and jondalar are best friends and jondalar teases him constantly. genuinely lovely, observant, empathetic. he talks about the pointlessness and bleakness of what they’re doing when no one else dares think on it too much in case they break down and i love him for it. probably goes home to become a war poet
private cooke: “HERE, DRIVER, HOW ABOUT YOU TRY TO KEEP IT ON THE BLOODY ROAD FOR A CHANGE” ABSOLUTE feral vibes. he’s just a public menace and we love him
private butler: “alright, alright, keep your ‘air on.” i really do just love him. he’s the one who tells the story about scott and beaufoy and eventually rallies everyone together to help scho push the truck, but to me he’s better known for being the scrawny little icon with the especially prominent red x on his sleeve and the moustache who’s just so GRUMPY all the time. like why is he so GRUMPY? i love him
sepoy jondalar: “i hope you get there.” it’s recognised in the script that he did the best impersonation of beaufoy, we love to see him excelling. gentle. loves schofield with his entire heart and he’s only just met him. there are a few iconic duos in this film - scho and blake, parry and atkins, bäumer and deserving more - and jondalar and rossi are one of them
private malky: “you could do with a new set.” my FAVOURITE!!!! the script says rossi says that line but i am CONVINCED it’s malky and i will stand by that. sounds like george harrison from the beatles. a soft lad who quietly teases cooke TWICE in one and a half pages with the most bashful kinda voice. he and cooke are another iconic duo. i love him so, so much. gay. they all are but malky especially. all the gays ride in that truck, that’s why smith, The Gay Dad, chose to put scho in with them
driver: “oh, piss off.” he and cooke have an iconic dynamic and it’s only one line long. you just know cooke is always giving him shit, it’s a running gag that’s famous throughout the whole company
lauri: “chil-dren? you?” the queen of deserving more. she’s only something like 17 and she’s probably an orphan raising another orphan. if you’ve seen 1917 and don’t love her with your whole entire soul then you get shot on sight, like i literally do not make the rules. the softest, strongest girl. a lesbian
private bäumer: “ENGLÄNDER!” the king of not keeping his goddamn mouth shut. at least two people in this fandom ship him with kilgour and i am one of them. a soft twink. i love him. if he weren’t dying he would have loved being straddled by scho and i can’t blame him for that
private müller: “bäumer? BÄUMER!” the one who was throwing up. he’s like kat from all quiet on the western front, the older veteran who takes the fresh recruits under his wing. he did not deserve to lose bäumer like that and honestly the grief in his voice when he realises what’s happened HAUNTS me. i really do love him so much. he felt guilty about deserting. he had so much depth like every other character who was barely on screen for half a scene and i hope he made it out of the war and did okay
private seymour: “well he’s not one of ours.” i just love his accent, i’m sorry this one is purely selfish. but i do love him so much, he was instantly ready to LITERALLY pick scho up and just take him with them and that’s pretty iconic. like he was just going to adopt this random, half-drowned soldier who showed up out of nowhere with no rifle or helmet or pack. his now
lieutenant richards: “what the HELL are you doing, lance corporal?” my FAVOURITE secondary character. like i say that about all of them, but i love him, lauri, malky, rossi, and parry THE most. honestly has some of the most iconic moments in the whole film. that squint he does at scho after “what?”? the stuff of oscars. he loved scho so much. the fact that he so desperately wanted to believe that what he was saying was true breaks my heart. genuinely such a good person. i love him. he and captain smith are husbands and dads with a bunch of idiot children
major hepburn: “well done, lad.” he’s like, an actual disney character. like his face, his voice, they just scream disney side character. like a good version of the guy from the princess and the frog. i love him so much. he’s so kind
medical officer: “i have NO idea. move along, lance corporal” I JUST LOVE HIM!!!!! he’s so cranky!!!!! get him some scissors!!!!

That Time I Named an Invader Zim Background Character and Everyone Thought it was Canon: The Story of Ixane
Like a lot of others it seems, the premiere of Enter the Florpus has recently made me think back to my first stay in the Invader Zim fandom many years ago. For me it was between 2006 and 2007, and I was 14-15 at the time. IZ was and still is a very special cartoon to me, not only for how it influenced me creatively but also the fact being a part of its fandom was my first really positive experience in a fan community. And I wanna talk about that experience because it... lead to something very interesting. Something that only could’ve happened in the now bygone days of the early internet where reliable sources were harder to find and misinformation was much more common, but somehow, has lasted until today.
This is how Ixane, a silent extra that appears only in the episode “Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars,” got her name.
Tumblr media
So first off, you might be wondering “Who the heck is Ixane?” As I mentioned, she only appears as a background character in the 21st episode of the original series, titled “Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars” which I’ll abbreviate for the rest of this post as just Backseat Drivers. She’s a member of The Resisty, a resistance group against the Irken Empire who also only appear in that episode, although they were planned to become more significant recurring characters later down the line before the show was cancelled.
In 2006 I LOVED the Resisty. They were my favorite group of characters in the entire show, probably because I was fascinated by all their potential which sadly didn’t get the chance to be explored before IZ was canceled. What planets did each of them come from? What are each of their individual species like? How did they form into a single resistance group? What were their names, their personalities? Their hopes, dreams and fears?! THEIR FAVORITE DRINKS?!?! I attempted to provide my own answers to some of these not-so-burning-to-anyone-but-myself (or so I thought at the time...) questions by writing a fanfic called “Resisting Authority,” which I published on Fanfiction.net and later DeviantArt. It’s since been taken down on FFN while the DA version is currently in private storage on my old account, so here’s a screenshot just to prove it existed:

Despite being more adult in tone than the show it was based on and rather melodramatic (then again, I was 14, and probably so was everyone else reading it), “Resisting Authority” became really, REALLY popular... at least for a fic that didn’t feature any of the show’s main characters, given it was entirely about the Resisty and told mostly from the perspective of its leader, Captain Lard Nar. Regardless it got a large amount of positive feedback and significant fan art on DeviantArt, most of which is no longer online although there’s still a little bit hanging around - mainly featuring Lyn, an Irken OC from the story who chooses to rebel against the empire and falls in love with Lard Nar, leading to a star crossed lovers conflict.
Because the purpose of the fic was to further explore the Resisty along with the idea of “What if an Irken betrayed their own?” several characters that appeared onscreen for only a couple of seconds in Backseat Drivers were fleshed out considerably in “Resisting Authority,” where they were given names, species names, home planet names, backstories, motivations and personalities. And of these the one who received by far the most development was a feminine, blue-eyed alien in a hooded purple cloak who I decided to name “Ixane.”
Ixane would become one of the most important characters in “Resisting Authority” right behind Lard Nar and Lyn. She is a Xanan from the planet Xana, a race of spiritual mystics. She is initially distrustful of Lyn, despite her actions and claims to be as much of a rebel as the rest of them, due to her hatred for the Irken Empire and how they destroyed her home. She believes Irkens are more like machines than living creatures, their bodies merely being empty shells to carry their PAKs around, making them incapable of genuine emotion. When she discovers Lyn and Lard Nar have been in a secret romantic relationship, she becomes even more hateful towards Lyn both due to jealousy, since she’d been harboring feelings for Lard Nar herself, and her genuine belief that Lyn’s feelings aren’t real, something that will only hurt Lard Nar in the end.
However throughout the course of the story her views are challenged and eventually Lyn manages to prove her wrong by displaying what she can’t deny is anything but legitimate love for Lard Nar and compassion for her allies in the Resisty. Unfortunately Lyn is fatally injured during a battle with a number of Irken soldiers sent to hunt down the rebellion. Now wanting nothing more than happiness for the person she loves, Ixane uses her mystical powers to save Lyn’s life while sacrificing her own in the process.
This character development (both in the meta sense and in the context of the fic itself) plus her selfless heroic sacrifice is what I think made Ixane one of the fic’s breakout characters and caused her to stick in the minds of those who read “Resisting Authority.” They were no longer thinking of her as just some extra, but as this fully developed character complete with an arc that I’d made her into - as the character of Ixane. But it didn’t occur to me just how big of an impact this may have truly had until about 9 years later.
In 2015, the official Invader Zim comic series by Oni Press began publication and I found myself extremely hyped about IZ again for the first time in almost a decade. It was during this time I came across a particular IZ wiki article and section of its TV Tropes page...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sources are here and here)
And I thought to myself “Wait... I thought I named her Ixane...?”
Because at this point I seriously couldn’t remember. I hadn’t thought about “Resisting Authority” in years, and with TV Tropes in particular noting that Ixane’s name was given “in the [episode] script” I wondered if I didn’t actually come up with the name. Maybe it was in the script for Backseat Drivers after all so I used it in the fic. Being unable to find said script (the original script as made by the episode’s writers, not a transcript) I couldn’t confirm it, so I mainly shrugged it off and thought more than likely I just had a bad memory. It wouldn’t be on a (still regularly maintained) wiki if it didn’t at least have a high possibility of being canon, right?
Cut to last night, August 2019. Me and all my other friends and fellow nerds who also grew up loving IZ are still buzzing over Enter the Florpus and our childhood/teenage fan content comes up in conversation. I dig up “Resisting Authority” from my old DA storage for perhaps a good laugh and a bit of nostalgia when more of when I first wrote it starts to come back to me. “I know the wikis all say her name was in the script, but I swear I came up with the name Ixane myself,” I thought, wondering if there was any way I could prove it.
Turns out I could. All the proof I needed was in a drawing of the character I posted to DA in January of 2007, which like the fic was still in storage:

“Um...I bet a lot of people who read Resisting Authority got the impression she was an OC. She technically isn't. She is a Resisty character we saw VERY BRIEFLY once or twice in Backseat Drivers and I just elaborated on her for the story. The cloaked girl, yasee. Just look here: [link] “
That link no longer works normally, however putting it into Wayback Machine provides a snapshot taken in September of 2006, which would be around the time “Resisting Authority” was first published on FFN. Scrolling down on that page gives us...
Tumblr media

Additionally, opening the image itself reveals the filename “resistycloak.jpg” rather than something like “ixane.jpg” or “resistyixane.jpg”
For those who weren’t in the fandom back then, The Scary Monkey Show was a very well known IZ fansite and its Encyclopedias section was basically a resource for the show’s lore, one considered highly reliable, before things like fan wikis became commonplace. I actually used this site as a reference for the different types of Irken ships and other planets in the IZ universe brought up in the fanfic and so did many other fic writers at the time. If any site on the internet would know a minor or even background IZ character’s name, if it really was in the official episode script, it’d be The Scary Monkey Show. Yet her name is listed as unknown.
So why am I telling you this?
Because as wild as this whole situation is, I’m not a person who likes misinformation. I feel like IZ fans, both young and old, should know Ixane is not actually this character’s canon name as given to her by the writers of the show. That being said...
I see no reason to stop calling her Ixane. That’s just her name now.
Heck, it’d probably be difficult to go back to thinking of her as having no name given how long the name has been used on all these wiki pages and whatnot. And I’m completely fine with receiving absolutely zero credit for actually being the one who came up with the name in the first place, because here’s the thing...
I may have made the name, but it was the fandom that spread it. The IZ community, primarily in my absence too, were the ones who codified, legitimized it. Who added it to those wikis and accepted it as canon all these years. Who believed in it enough to assume it came from the official episode script, from the IZ crew themselves!
Ixane isn’t my name for her. It’s our name for her, as the fans who made Invader Zim the cult classic it is today.
And I want that to be something we all can have and be proud of ❤︎

Brand New Animal...
So, the last few episodes of BNA: Brand New Animal dropped on Netflix Japan last week. I was initially really hyped for this anime—I devoted several hours of my life to translating and summarizing the Winter 2020 Otomedia interview concerning it—so I intended to write a lot more about the series, especially upon a wider release.
But having now seen every episode, this is another Kiznaiver and Darling in the Franxx for me. There’s a lot of potential, and I was incredibly invested at the start, but the narrative quickly goes directions and makes decisions that don’t sit well with me at all.
For those interested in BNA, my (mostly?) spoiler-free opinion is that it’s visually beautiful (especially in regards to its colors), but the story feels scattered, and there’s so little time devoted to positive interactions among the leads that their friendships fall flat. Further, speaking as a very character-oriented person, I finished this anime annoyed at the entire main cast. Their growth comes across as dissatisfying and undeserved.
Of course, it is more than worth noting that my understanding of Brand New Animal is indeed limited at this point; I don’t have much of a grasp on Japanese, there are no official English translations yet, and I watched with Japanese subtitles. (At least until episode 12. While there are thankfully subtitles available now, there weren’t when I watched, which is a huge disappointment in terms of accessibility.)
I recognize that my feelings may very well change if I have a better sense of everything that’s being said. But given what I do know, I—at least at the moment—have no desire to rewatch this series. I’m always open to requests to talk about BNA, but I don’t think I’ll be blogging much about it otherwise.
All that said, I do want to share some spoiler thoughts under the cut. As my sister noted, I am “very upset about this furry anime.”
First things first: I cannot stand Nazuna. I’m sorry. I think it’d probably be too much to say that she soured the whole show for me, but she definitely comes close.
Now, I got a (minor) degree in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, so, yes, I can’t help but wonder if my strong negative feelings are related to sexism. Would I feel so strongly if there were a man in Nazuna’s place? There’s been a lot of investigating myself these last few days, let me tell you.
Still, I can’t say I know the answers. But I do have some Thoughts that are maybe best illustrated with another anime I’ve started watching lately: My Hero Academia.
Do note that I’m only on Season 2, but there are also characters I strongly dislike so far in My Hero—characters who are arguably much worse than Nazuna, as far as their actions and behavior go. Bakugo is an angry, abusive bully, while Mineta sexually harasses women. I hate both of them, but—especially regarding Bakugo—it’s a different kind of hate than what I feel for Nazuna.
Why? Well, I won’t deny the possibility that sexism plays a role, but there’s also a profound difference in how these characters are treated by their stories. Bakugo initially gets away with his bad attitude, but upon coming to high school, he’s a pariah. He’s called out for being a jerk, time and time again. Mineta, similarly, is not adored for his actions. These aren’t nice dudes, and the narrative makes this point clear. Regarding Bakugo, I hate him, but it’s not exactly a bad kind of hate. Because I hate him, I’m rooting even harder for Deku to prove him wrong.
But what about Nazuna? She pretends to be another culture’s god, but much of BNA seems dedicated to treating her as a poor victim who was manipulated into manipulating others and needs to be rescued. While Nazuna’s situation is indeed a frightening one that I don’t at all intend to make light of, episode 6 makes abundantly clear that this girl adores masquerading as a goddess and fails to see any moral problem in tricking thousands of people into believing that she’s their savior.
And that, to me, is absolutely horrendous. Nazuna is not in kindergarten. She is not a small child still in the preoperational stage of development. She is an older teenager. I find it disconcerting to paint her as someone in a rough place who was simply desperate for love when she pointedly relishes her false godhood because it makes her feel like an idol. That is so unbelievably gross and disrespectful.
Of course, Nazuna truly doesn’t see what she’s doing as wrong, and I recognize that she is young. In the end, as I hope the Bakugo example highlights, my issues are really less about Nazuna herself and more about how she’s written and depicted. Just as there’s nothing inherently despicable about portraying a smug, selfish teenage boy in a cartoon, there’s nothing inherently despicable about portraying a smug, selfish teenage girl in another cartoon. But while Deku and Bakugo were also past friends just as Michiru and Nazuna, Deku never defends Bakugo’s awful behavior as Michiru does for Nazuna.
And that bothers me. Michiru—our protagonist and so the person viewers are pushed to empathize most with—never really seems to grasp just how disgusting Nazuna’s actions are. More importantly, neither does Nazuna herself. She’s instantly forgiven, and her dream comes true seemingly without any apology or understanding of wrong whatsoever.
Brand New Animal is filled to the brim with social commentary, but one message that stood out to me actually has nothing to do with the human/animal-human conflict. It’s instead that this cute girl never has to face the consequences of her actions because she’s cute.
I know, I know. This is some pretty over-the-top negativity. But I was so excited for this series. Especially considering the ending conflict around being “mixed” and “purebred,” I felt like BNA was an opportunity for writer Kazuki Nakashima to more thoroughly explore concepts he wanted to examine in Kill la Kill but didn’t because a talking outfit just ain’t gonna garner the same amount of sympathy as cute animal-humans. With my recent(ish) Wolf Children posting in mind, I also love that Brand New Animal ultimately pushes for diversity instead of away from it as I feel that film does, even if there are some... unfortunate implications along the way (that I don’t know if I’m personally capable of analyzing).
But 12 episodes simply couldn’t do this show justice. I’m supposed to care for a girl who calls being an animal-human a “disease” and never seems to really reconcile with how messed up that is? I’m supposed to care for a man who dismembers others in the name of “honor” and never seems to really reconcile with how messed up that is? I’m supposed to hope that two friends/lovers get back together when one is rude and dismissive towards the other for the majority of the show, and the other idolizes her and overlooks her truly terrible misdeeds?
Maybe I just don’t get it. Maybe I missed something (or a lot of things). But there is so much here that gets resolved too quickly or never receives the full exploration it deserves. As I said in the start, characters fall flat, their friendships fall flatter, and any good themes or messages that I do recognize in the series hardly impact me because the rushed development of the players soured my positive feelings for them.
I would have loved to see Michiru acknowledge that she’s in love with someone who does bad things. I would have loved a heart-to-heart where she admits this to Shirou, where he then admits that in his long life, there have been times when he’s been in the same boat. I would have loved to see Nazuna truly question her actions, where her declaration that she’s Nazuna instead of a cult leader actually means something because she’s recognized that she’s been wrong and is ready to be loved for herself, not someone she’s not. I would have loved to see a moment where Michiru expresses to Shirou that he shouldn’t control his violent tendencies for her approval but because it’s simply the right thing to do. The list goes on and on.
At the end of the day, I can admit my own garbage tastes. Bakugo is apparently the most popular My Hero character, and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else express such a harsh opinion regarding Nazuna’s portrayal in BNA. Episode 5 of the show (with the baseball) seems to be its most adored entry, but I thought little of it. My favorite things in anime—and what I’m specifically looking forward to in Studio Trigger anime—are maybe anomalies.
But, gosh. I really wanted to love this.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 31 and 40 for that shipper ask meme (sorry for picking so many but those questions are GOOD)
You're right, they absolutely are. I'm sorry in advance that this is gonna be LONG and I'm on mobile so I can't even add a read more;;
1. Talk about the first ship you ever had
So I'm SURE there were relationships I was invested in in movies and cartoons I watched as a child (I've always been a sucker for romance, even though there was that period when I didn't want to admit it) but I can't remember anything from very far back;; So it was either Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter or Ichigo and Masaya from Tokyo Mew Mew, whichever I read first.
2. Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life
GOSH. You can't do this to me. I guess Romione because it was the time in my preteens when I was becoming more aware of... stuff, in general, abs the two cemented my love for friends-to-lovers. Then Ioryuu, because I've never been AS invested in and passionate about a ship before and likely never will. Nothing can compare to that intensity and ngl I miss it;; I miss the genuine hype I felt in my heart that made me interact with people and make things. So many things. I honestly can't think of a third one with such a lasting impact, sorry;;
3. What's your current OTP?
Tumblr media
I imagine Souyo scenarios in my head every night before falling sleep and every morning after waking up, this is not a joke not an exaggeration. I still feel a little traitorous saying this on tumblr but their dynamic IS somewhat similar to the way I see Ioryuu so-
4. What's your current NoTP?
I don't think I have one? I have dislikes, some of them strong, but I don't see any of them often enough to be, like, actively angry. I have better uses for my time than willingly exposing myself to stuff I don't like.
5. Do you have any poly ships?
Not generally, juggling two characters is enough work lol. The only poly ships I've ever really actively shipped are Niels, Duncan and Natalie from the web comic Niels And the Gang by humon and Kinatsuen from Boueibu, but neither are actively on my mind much these days.
8. Have you ever shipped yourself with a character?
BOY HAVE I EVER. I've seen someone on tumblr have a side blog for self-shopping and not gonna lie, it's an excellent idea. My late teens were spent reading character x reader fics on Quotev and I started my fic career with the same genre. I don't really know what to do with myself when I DON'T actively ship myself with a character, which is my state of being now that Yosuke surpassed Yoosung as my favorite character;; Ibushi and Yoosung are the biggest ones but man oh boy I have shipped myself with characters from early age and I'm showing no signs of stopping! There's a reason that I main dating sims.
15. Have you ever "shipped at first sight"?
Not for long. I SUCK at forming first impressions. Usually if I start thinking I'll ship something, I end up not being so invested in it after all, and instead shipping something I swore off at first lmao. Which leads us to...
16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked
As a rule of thumb, all of them. I don't understand HOW it keeps happening but somehow almost all the ships I truly care/d about (that I didn't start shipping through osmosis before knowing them in the source material) started out as something I thought I "wouldn't be able to get behind." Gajevy. Shikatema. Sasunaru. Doctor/Rose. Karabita. Atsutodo. Kiribaku. Yoozen. Enatsu. Freaking IORYUU. EVEN SOUYO. IT'S BEEN YEARS I REALLY SHOULD KNOW THE PATTERN BY NOW
17. Talk about a pairing you've stopped shipping romantically
Like, I started to think they're better as friends after all? I guess NaLi. Then again, I mostly only shipped them out of spite in the first place because I wanted a counter for N/a//Lu, which I never liked at all;;
20. Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping
Now this time I can say for sure that there isn't one. I can't come up with ships myself and stay on board if there isn't content for it, canon or otherwise;; It's not a conscious decision or anything, it's just how my mind works. I get attached to stuff by exposure, whether from fans or the source material, and if the source material has enough content for two characters for me to pick up on and become interested, it's guaranteed to be enough to become a somewhat popular ship.
21. Is there a ship you just don't get, but have nothing against?
Actually... That's the extent I go to with notp'ing these days. I'm passionate about the right to ship whatever you want so by proxy I can't have anything "against" a ship, even if the sheer thought of it existing makes me nauseous. And I know how to think from points of view other than my own, so I can usually see the appeal, even if it appeals to me personally less than eating dog shit while walking barefoot on rusty nails that are also on fire.
That said, the only ships I have on my Tumblr blacklist are Yoo//ra/n and Suza//lu/lu because they're both popular ships for characters whose tags I am/was following and therefore get suggested a lot even if I want following anyone who ships then. Oh, and all B/LMa//tsu ships! I generally can't feel good about incestuous ships, but can and will fight for their shippers' right to do as they please as long as they stay respectful. (never saw blmatsus who weren't respectful. saw a plethora of anti-blmatsus who were absolute demons. actually the reason i moved away from the last remnants of my anti mindset was that i didn't want to be associated with THOSE anti-blmatsus, when the shippers they wanted dead were all such sweet people. food for thought.)
22. Which of your ships have the best chemistry?
All of them?? Lmao I don't understand this question, isn't shipping all about liking the chemistry between characters? Or the potential for it I guess, in which case the chemistry is whatever you want it to be, which is great B) I'm sorry I keep accidentally dodging questions I'm bad at choosing examples from a long, unordered list
23. Which of your ships deserve better writing?
Hhhhhhh I shipped Jerza for years and was still unsatisfied with their ending, Jellal didn't get to heal enough and we didn't really see them working through their past in an effective way and getting comfortable around each other. It's like they were supposed to be friends to enemies to lovers but the last part didnt really develop and their relationship stagnated at the stage were they were both just permanently awkward out of regret, and couldn't bring themselves out of it even though everything was forgiven forever ago. Or I've forgotten a lot of stuff that happened. Very likely. Is your a case of bad writing or good writing not working out the way I wanted it to? You're asking the wrong person.
25. Have you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs/graphics or similar?
EYUP. Harumichi was my otp for like a whole year before I saw a single episode with them lol. It was crazy, but it was REAL. I've also went into shows already paying attention to things I knew my friends/people I follow shipped, kind of hoping I'd get into it.
26. Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic I'm writing these questions down from screenshots and I cropped the rest of this one out by accident rip
Eeeh I go for the obvious. Best friend pairs, obvious pining, some rivalry with sexual tension, though I don't really know what to do with those. Then there's the fact that I never see it coming sick Persona 5 reference bro and start shipping the couple I thought "should just be friends" at first. This is more about my relationship to the ships than their dynamic but it's very constant...
27. Is there a ship you've shipped for most of your life?
Hmmm well I got into HP and started shipping Romione sometime in mid elementary school so it's definitely been more than half my lifetime since, but I don't really know if I "ship it" anymore. I didn't start disliking them or anything but for me, "shipping" is an active intrest in a fictional relationship, so if it reaches the stage where I like it, in theory, but I don't have the feels, it doesn't really count. That's why I can say I like ships without shipping them. It's gotta be actively on my brain, man.
31. Talk about one of your favorite headcanons for a ship you love
I haven't mentioned Kannao once, which is criminal. So here's some of what I imagine their future to be like :D I've been getting new Persona followers recently so here's something for you to unfollow me over lmao
So first of all I ignore the canon that Naoto goes back to the city for her detective work after her first year of high school, shhh she stays in Inaba, only taking the occasional jobs. She and Kanji start dating during the spring break before their second year and get more comfortable with each other, so that the next summer they're still cute and very much themselves (which means somewhat reserved) but not as awkward anymore :) I haven't thought about what happens after they graduate but they get married in their early 20s and have a son <3 (Chie and Yukiko adopted their daughter only slightly earlier. They may or may not have had a bit of a competition going on) ((yes Souyo are very much together but if they end up having children I haven't thought about it it's later))
Kanji manages the textile shop and Naoto helps when she's free from detective stuff. They live in Inaba but Naoto is away quite often for her gigs;; She takes up a few jobs less when Kouta is little though so he wouldn't feel less close to his Mom than his Dad.
Both Kanji and Naoto suffered from unfair expectations growing up, so they try their best to make up for it with Kouta's upbringing. They want him to feel comfortable being himself and free to express himself the way he wants; they make sure he knows he'll always be loved and supported, and to never be ashamed of who he is. As a child it doesn't even occur to him that many social norms and social expectations exist, because Naoto and Kanji pretty much let him do whatever as long as he isn't hurting himself or anyone else. They might go a little overboard though, giving into Kouta's whims without much consideration at all. The Amagi Aunties enforce rules and keep kids grounded in reality much better lmao
40. If you could change one thing about your otp, what would that be?
HMNGHNMHGNMGH I WAMT YOSUKE'S INTERNALIZED BULLSHIT ACKNOWLEDGED!! It's there AtlUS!! Stop pretending oh my god.... I love the Dancing All Night story mode (so far. I am by no means done); Yosuke gets cool moments and Yu's internal monologue really shows how much he appreciates him. The dynamic is so much better than with a silent protagonist, and thank god they didn't go with the tactless anime Yu (as fun as he is). I know there are a bunch of nods to the cut romance across spinoffs but mannnn... I wish they were more serious about it. At this point it's not even that far-fetched to think Yosuke has feelings for Yu that he may or may not be aware of, and I know that Yu as the player character can't be too tied down to one option in canon, but still... Even the clown gets tired of jokes at some point. One can dream.

More Thorough Thoughts on Mystery Dungeon Rescue DX Demo
Intro
When I was a kid, the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series was peak hype. You could actually play as a Pokemon, going on adventures in randomly-changing environments so nothing is ever exactly the same. The story blew me away, surprising me with how emotional video games could be. And that was just the first game, as the second improved upon so many things.
Here we are again, remaking the first games. I’m really excited for people who never played Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue team to experience the story of the Ninetales curse for the first time. It’s a great story in a great game and it deserves to be seen by more people.
Graphics/Art Style
In addition, this game fixes something I never imagined would be fixed: the art style. When the Mystery Dungeon games transitioned to 3D, they lost the series’ original art style to be replaced with the generic cartoon art style every 3D cartoon game feels like it has. With these filters, it not only regains what the drawn graphics of the original imply, it recreates the concept art with its hatched shading and bold lines. Look at any screenshot of the game, and everything other than the Pokemon looks like a drawn picture, not a 3D environment. It is so pretty and it works so well.
Aside from the Pokemon, though. The filters make them fit in for the most part, but it is very clear that these 3D models (the same ones used in everything since Gen V - GameFreak, you taking notes?) are not made specifically for this game. It’s not bad that they stick out, since in a way, they should, but it does break the concept art look that everything else has.
It does keep Super’s walking animations, too, unfortunately. They animated four-legged Pokemon very generically and it doesn’t look great. The originals had unique animations for every Pokemon, mainly because every Pokemon had unique sprites. Now the uniqueness is largely gone. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but I miss Skitty’s pounces as it wanders around town.
Changes from the Originals
The personality quiz will sometimes suggest Pokemon from the opposite gender compared to the original. I haven’t tested it thoroughly, but when I took it, I chose girl and it gave me the Pokemon that used to be male-exclusive for that personality trait.
And now you can choose your starter regardless of the test results. I like the best-of-both-worlds approach here. You can also choose Partner Pokemon that used to be exclusively Heroes in the original, so that’s very neat.
Dungeon mechanics have been updated to be an evolution of Super’s mechanics. The demo ends too early in the game for me to form a full opinion on this. So far, I haven’t noticed it change the difficulty, as moves didn’t really have Base Power in the original as far as I noticed, so Tackle was just as good as Slam. Better even, as it has more PP. Now, you start with better moves, but it doesn’t seem to make it all that much easier. It was already easy.
I can’t say I’m the hugest fan of “press A and the game chooses the best move for you to use,” but if you use Super’s move button combo, you can choose a move yourself, anyways. And there is a “do nothing” button combo, so I’ll just have to get used to using that rather than pressing A when I want to do nothing.
Overall, though, moves are handled a lot better than they were in the originals, at least on the accessing them front. Some people are upset about the lack of a Basic Attack, but I made my farewells when Gates to Infinity came out and made them useless. It makes Max Elixirs less useless.
Story-wise nothing has changed so far other than Diglett being introduced slightly earlier, while also making you a shortcut to the Pelipper Post Office. Not sure if that means more story additions are on the way (I hope so!) or if it’s just a convenience thing with an in-universe explanation.
Really small thing that bothers me, though, is that wandering NPCs in town have zero weight to them. In the originals, NPCs had set ranges and you couldn’t move them. Now, you so much as brush up against them and they slide away from you. Even Gates and Super did it the original way. It feels wrong and cheap the new way; at least in most games that let you move NPCs, you need to exert some force. As it is here, I try to talk to them and push them away in the process.
Conclusion?
As far as I’ve seen so far, I’m pretty excited. But there’s still more to talk about that I will under the cut! It involves mild spoilers found out through the game’s Help Menus.
Pokemon Availability
Here’s something that’s neutral-to-negative: all signs point to these games consisting of only Gens I-III, evolutions/pre-evolutions(?) of Gen I-III Pokemon, Megas and Primals of Gen I-III Pokemon, and Lucario. More than the original? Yes. But in this day and age, it’s not very many. We criticized Sword and Shield for cutting the cast, and even before the DLC those games have more than this game does.
I understand it as an artistic choice. It’s the same reason Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee only have Kanto Pokemon. But when I get a new Pokemon game, especially Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, I want to use Pokemon I’ve never used before in that context. And I’ll be shocked if any of the newcomers are available before the post-game.
And not even Alolan Formes are in. The game’s TMs indicate that this game was developed to release during Gen VII, but they didn’t even do the obvious and make the Ninetales that lives on an icy mountain ice-type.
Shiny Pokemon Exist
That’s all we know, but that’s really cool. Apparently the Friend Bow helps recruit them.
Exp. All
Something that started in Gates to Infinity and continued into Super Mystery Dungeon is the fact that every recruited Pokemon gains experience along with you, regardless if they are on the adventure or not.
They changed the name of Friend Areas to Rescue Camps, and one of the Rare Quality descriptions seems to indicate that Pokemon in Rescue Camps gain experience with you.
Unlike with the main series, I don’t really mind it. I find the game more fun when I’m bulldozing my way through everything than I do when I’m struggling. But that’s just me.
I can see this being a disappointment for some. It’d be nice to be able to turn this on or off, especially since it would be funny considering the main series took away that option. But I’m just speculating now.
IQ Replaced
Instead we have Rare Qualities, which it seems some Pokemon come with, but others can be obtained through gummis. Gummis now only come in two varieties rather than the type-based ones, and thus are likely a lot rarer. Likely. I’ve got a job sitting in my Accepted Jobs list that rewards one so maybe they’re not all that rare.
Absolute Mover has an equivalent, so that’s all I really care about here. If I can have a Caterpie that crashes through walls, I’m happy.
Six Additional Story Beats?
The original Red/Blue Rescue Team had 12 total story portraits on the loading screen. DX has 18. This could mean one of two things:
One, it could have more actual events in the story. This I’m hoping for, but...
Two, more of the game’s story could have portraits. The original only showed the Legendaries you encountered, but there’s important events that happen that don’t involve Legendaries. Plus not all of the post-game events had portraits.
So, I want to be excited, but at the same time, I can’t get my hopes up.
Conclusion
I’m still excited, but it’s not exactly what I wanted from another Mystery Dungeon game. The gameplay’s still fun, of course, and I’m excited to see the rest of the game in this beautiful artstyle, but I have to temper my expectations. This isn’t Gen VII Mystery Dungeon where I can play as a Litten, nor Gen VIII Mystery Dungeon where I can have a Sobble partner.
This is Gen III+. It’s the original but prettier and with new mechanics. I’ll definitely love it, but it won’t be what I was hoping for.

I just want to look at Pokémon stuff for five minutes without being bombarded by recommended YouTube videos/posts/comments about how SWORD AND SHIELD ARE GOING TO BE THE WORST GAMES EVER GAMEFREAK IS SO LAZY AND IF YOU BUY THESE GAMES THEN YOU'RE A TRAITOR TO THE FANDOM AND YOURE RUINING EVERYTHING
Not even gonna censor myself with the opinions below because this situation is so frustrating
Just shut the FUCK up already! You all sound like entitled children! If you think the game is going to be bad and you don’t want to buy it, then fine, don’t buy it! But STOP telling other people that they're not allowed to get it or even still just be excited for it because you're not. Because you don't like the changes they're making. I haven't been having a great year and I want to look forward to the cute cartoon monster game. So sue me
Half of the outrage is overblown anyway. There's still so much we just don't know about these games. There's so far nothing offensive about them beyond making changes to the series that a lot of people don’t like, and now you're all scrounging for any and every way to declare that these games will be the worst ever because they aren't catering to your standards. I get wanting the series to be better, really. But for fuck's sake, just wait for the game to come out and THEN get outraged
If you were expecting Breath of the Wild: Pokemon Edition, that’s your fucking problem. GameFreak never promised that. They never even hinted that a fully open-world Pokemon game was their plan. You are the one who raised your own expectations too high and disappointed yourself. That’s not their fault that you decided to compare their game to one that isn’t even in the same genre and got yourself excited over nothing. Learn to curb your own expectations, get off of hype culture because it’s never done anything good, and then reconcile reality with what you wanted and whether you still like what you’re getting
Also, I don’t like open-world! Making it open-world wouldn’t make it inherently better!
And before anyone starts trying to argue sales and how GameFreak needs to be punished somehow:
Lemme just... drag over this box and get out my megaphone here
*ahem*
You don't have to preorder a game or buy a game the day it releases. If the quality is questionable to you in pre-release materials, wait for the DAMN game to release and reviews to come out before buying. If you're that on the fence about buying: JUST WAIT. What do you think game reviews exist for?
Preorder culture is bullshit anyway
Like, really. Do you know what I see a lot that drives me absolutely insane? The fact that most of these arguments boil down to “we’re the ones paying for it, so we’re entitled to what we want!” And hey, hey. Hey. No, actually, you’re not. Because. And here’s the thing I don’t think some of you have realized yet
YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE GAME YET AND NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO BUY IT
If the game looks bad to you? Don’t buy it! If you disagree with the executive decisions? Don’t BUY it! That’s the joy of being a consumer! You get to just... not buy things if you think it’s not worth the money! It’s not like GameFreak has hacked into your Amazon account and forced you to preorder the game and won’t let you cancel. It’s not even like you funded the game’s development. You are not. Entitled. To a better game. Stop acting like you already bought it and wanted more for what you spent. You haven’t spent anything and you can very easily just... not!
And the people who decide to factor in the cost of the Switch and Pokemon Home into their “Sword and Shield” calculations are full of shit. If you’re buying the console just for this game, that’s a you problem. It has nothing to do with GameFreak. And Home is an optional service. Should they have revealed the cut Pokemon closer to Home’s announcement? Yes. But no one’s forcing you to use it. I never used Bank and didn’t enjoy the 3DS games any less
And this wouldn’t even be an issue if people weren’t being so pushy about the game. I am totally fine with people not agreeing with the decisions that have been confirmed for the game and venting on their personals or something. It doesn’t effect me. But do NOT go on positivity posts about the game, or people’s posts about how they really don’t care about the changes and start writing argumentative comments about how they’re wrong and the game is going to be awful. Or about how they’re “excusing GameFreak’s laziness.” Or even just “Bad post OP.” Basically: stop being snide assholes because you’re pissy
WHO ARE YOU TO TRY TO KILL OTHERS’ HAPPINESS ABOUT SOMETHING BECAUSE YOU AREN’T?!
Criticize the game all you want. I, personally, think the criticisms are bullshit because the game isn’t out yet. We legitimately can’t judge the final product. We know a few things that were removed, and very few things that were added. Hell, at the time of writing we only have, like 10 new Pokemon revealed. I get why people are upset that there are some old Pokemon that they won’t be able to transfer over. But we also don’t know how GameFreak works internally. Just... stop being so damn judgy, and then attacking people who are actually still okay with the game
Like, Christ you know you people are toxic when I actually start to agree with the King of Clickbait and Notable Asshole Verlisify on something

What are your top ten Shigaraki ships (and if you've got time for it: why)?
Oh man! idk if I have enough - if there even is enough - Shigaraki ships (in the traditional romantic sense) to fill ten. Plus I hadn’t ship Shigaraki much with anyone because it wasn’t until recently that he got all this screentime and developing relationships with other characters.
But going with interesting dynamics and relationships of all types, platonic or romantic or enemy or cautionary or imaginary/fanon (because I’m a sucker for my own imagined potential of a relationship) or canon(ish), and which ones intrigues/affects/impacts me the most? and then ranking them??? impossible hmm
(using the names and honorifics the characters call Shigaraki for some variation and also because I’m a weeb) (also ranking is suspect because I’m bad at making decisions)
10. Shigaraki and Bakugou
I didn’t actually like Bakugou until his Remedial Course mini-arc, and so didn’t pay attention to him much. So I was surprised when Shigaraki wanted Bakugou for his League. It wasn’t until I understood Shigaraki much better and finally took the effort to consider Bakugou’s side of things that I found myself wishing they had more interaction during his kidnapping. Because here was Shigaraki going 110% to woo Bakugou into joining him, he had honestly thought the boy would make a good Villain. And there was Bakugou who was adamant about being a Hero despite not being very Heroic. We could’ve had a great look (if Bakugou ever talked) into Heroes and Villains and motivations and more stuff about how they’re two sides of the same coin… or so I wish, making this a purely speculation about a battle of ideas and these two enemies coming to a grudging respect. But that’s all over now.
9. Shigaraki and Twice
Shigaraki took off Twice’s mask to shut him up (sorta), then put it back on for him! If that isn’t the most warmhearted mean thing to do. Twice is very much invested in the League and I wanna see Shigaraki appreciating that. Is Twice the first member to get to touch Shigaraki’s hands? To measure them for a clone? Very big deal. Not a very intense dynamic, but good fun downtime Villain Out Shopping fluff.
8. Shigaraki and Mr. Compress
Gotta say it’s @happojin’s ficlet about these two scheming over personal revenge on Overhaul that got me intrigued in this no-ideology partnership-in-pure-villainy. Mr. Compress is the exact type of chaos-loving dramatic criminal that’s right up his boss’ alley, though I can see too much of it getting onto Shigaraki’s nerves - which makes for good, mischievous conflict. These two would blow up buildings purely for fun and I wanna see that joy on their faces. But also! Not yet knowing the reason for Mr. Compress join the League makes for great speculation - like maybe he’s just enamored with Shigaraki’s spirit and youth (that makes him feel young himself???) that he’ll be okay with losing an arm and poverty and getting kicked around by a giant naked mountain man for a month. We see Mr. Compress with Shigaraki in chapter 114, calling Toga (for Shigaraki?) and I want to think it’s Mr. Compress fancying himself as Shigaraki’s (all) right hand man.
7. Doctor and Shigaraki
The Doctor is creepy and I’m iffy about him cuz, well, he’s creepy but he sure is making the plot move forward and now he’s the guy who will be giving the League zany inventions like some episodic comedic cartoon. If it wasn’t so horrifying that they’re Noumus. But mostly, this is a guy who knew Shigaraki from childhood, who preserved (and maintained???) the hands, who Shigaraki is familiar with but also knows nothing about. What stories can you tell us about Shigaraki, Doc? I wanna know. I’m scared, but I wanna know.
6. Giran and Shigaraki-san
How long have they known each other??? (Consider - middle-aged seen-his-shit-in-the-underworld-and-now-respected-broker Giran having to be polite to a sulky teenaged Shigaraki and needing to address him as ‘san’ - idk, maybe I’m getting the nuance there wrong but… hilarity) What other dealings have they done? Giran sure is a champ to lose five fingers for Shigaraki and the League - is the League his best customer? Did Shigaraki ‘inherit’ the use of the broker from AFO? Has Giran met AFO? I guess this is just me wanting to know more about Giran, and Shigaraki is the proxy for that. But I wanna know! I wanna see them interact when Shigaraki rescues Giran.
5. All Might and Shigaraki(Shimura Tenko)
I love my Shimura Tenko gets a father figure in All Might AUs! I’m writing one lol. But I acknowledge this is less about the characters themselves and more about the exploration of a legacy that ties them together. Cuz I love that shit. I love the idea of All Might being such a loyal disciple that he would do anything for the grandson of Nana - except it’s just that, he’s only chasing after a reminder of Nana. What would he do with Shigaraki/Tenko himself? And I love the idea of Shigaraki/Tenko deciding how to incorporate the tale of the sordid Shimura family into his life - if he chooses to do so at all. Lots of family/identity drama. Also completely in headcanon territory. Ah well.
4. Toga and Tomura-kun
The recent chapters have really up my interest in the friendship/siblinghood/whatever admiration Toga has for Shigaraki. She calls him Tomura-kun, which yes it’s expected of her as a cute high schooler; but no one else has ever called Shigaraki just his first name besides AFO. And Shigaraki seems to have a soft spot for her? He’s been very nice to all of the League, but for someone who immediately hated her at first sight cuz she was a ‘brat’ who didn’t make any sense, that’s the biggest attitude change. Right now, they’re confirmed to be the youngest and closest in age of the League, and I like the idea of them being able to be ‘young people these days’ together and relate to one another. Toga is very loyal to Shigaraki, but not above stabbing him should he be a jerk. Like with Twice, I wanna see Shigaraki be appreciative, or rather, I wanna see another scene where he’s really nice to her (the first one being, of course, that Overhaul arc flashback).
Also they were in an omake drama CD being silly and if that isn’t the best thing.
3. Kurogiri and Shigaraki Tomura
Hmmm I’m lazy and I already planned a whole post dedicated to analyzing their relationship, so I’m gonna skip this. I’ll edit with the link to that post later!
2. Shigaraki and Spinner! In danger of being an OTP for me, which isn’t hard cuz I don’t have any other
The only romantic relationship on this list. Spinaraki. Like I said before, though Shigaraki was really the only option after Stain, Spinner was so clearly ready to believe in Shigaraki, to follow him, because he wanted the League to change the world. That’s a lot of faith put onto someone who is Shigaraki (I mean, look at him, he’s a skinny NEET goth), so much so Spinner, implied to have not been a criminal before joining the League, is ready to kill (and does). That’s intriguing enough, and then comes his month long observation diary about his leader. Who he still stays with after knowing Shigaraki’s very-not-Stain-like-nor-revolutionary plans. And now we wait for the climax of his journey of wavering loyalty. True, a lot of it is my own hyped-up imagination but I’m enjoying it. If Spinner stays and become Shigaraki’s most loyal follower, that is so my shit I’m going to die. I’m gonna die anyways whenever they interact in the near future chapters.
1. All For One and Tomura
What is there to say about…. this? It haunts me. It’s number one on this list cuz it’s the dynamic that I think about most, has impacted me most (Chapter 222 was a lot to handle), and it’s like trying to untangle thorny vines. Gotta say, in my intepretation, it’s a very accurate portrayal - from Shigaraki’s side - of caring about someone who has hurt you a lot, and you know it. But it’s the person you knew best and depended on when there was no one else, and you’re always going to have their influence - of which includes positive things. It’s one of the very few portrayal that gets all the paradoxical messy details while being explicitly clear to the reader it’s wrong, Shigaraki doesn’t deserve this. It’s also clear that while AFO may have affection for people, that doesn’t matter. He’s a monster. Still wrong, and cruel. And I think that’s important to show, important to depict and an important message told well. Now all that’s left is to wait to see what Shigaraki will do now and how this bond will break.
This to be absolutely clear, this isn’t a ‘ship’, it’s a portrayal of an abused child solider that is now flourishing away from his guardian and I’m hopeful for the future. And it’s so poignant to me, that a story is tackling this. Gets it. Its a dynamic I’m invested in because it’s a story of survival and I will see it through.
-
Honorable mentions? I wanna see Shigaraki and Hawks. That should be interesting.
I used to like ShigaDabi, but mostly because it was available. I’ve got no opinions about it now. :/

Thanks for reading!

Miraculous, the Monster of the Week Format and the Status Quo, or Why Things Barely Change At All
TLDR; while the monster-of-the-week format doesn’t mean there is no overarching plot in Miraculous, these monsters are variable in terms of quality and the overarching plot itself is not something the show explores.
The fact that you can watch 80% of the show in any order without feeling lost is quite telling: the goal is to have self-contained stories during the space of one episode, not to have things that happened in such and such episode have consequences in the following ones. Which is frustrating in the long run, even more so when the monster-of-the-week format doesn’t mean that episodes are aired weekly.
It isn’t that the people working on Miraculous aren’t talented enough to write something good, simply that the format they have to work with makes the story what it is.
Now, if you want to read something a little more detailed, just click the thingy!
With now 64 episodes aired, it’s safe to say that Miraculous is a show that is meant to stay on our screens for quite some time. For exactly five seasons, so far. Yay! Or perhaps not?
With its reused villains (when you’ve got 2.0 in your title, that screams Electric Boogaloo, I’m sorry), its apparent lack of character development and little focus on the overarching plot (if there is any, at this point), it sounds like this is pretty much stretched out.
The show has two focuses, so to say, our two cinnamon buns and their love story, and superhero stuffs with different villains in each episode (and that guy alone in his lair, and sometimes that woman with the fan but eeeeh, don’t sweat it, besides they’re interchangeable so far)
What do I mean by Monster-of-the-week format?
Exactly what the title says. For each week/episode, one villain. Who is defeated at the end of the week. Yay! The prime example of this is the original Scooby Doo cartoons, Scooby Doo, Where Are You!
Tumblr media
Now, what do we think of that show? Other than the laugh tracks, it holds up well enough. More importantly, though, every story is self-contained, and the appeal of the Scooby Doo is its mysteries. We don’t care about Velma’s backstory, or how Fred became the leader, these characters have very little depth and that’s OK, their interactions is not the main point of the story.
Scooby Doo has a very simple formula:
The gang goes somewhere, finds mystery, chase one, traps, chase two with a bubblegum pop soundtrack this time, then the mystery is solved, very basically. And we can move on to the next mystery
You can air any episode in any order, you can get the story without feeling lost.
And for most Miraculous episodes, it is true as well! They follow roughly the same recipe:
Something something civilian life, Hawk Moth akumatises someone, Superhero Time, Lucky Charm, Status Quo again.
The first episodes that aired never explained how Marinette got her Miraculous and… It didn’t seem to matter all that much?
But there’s a problem here. MLB isn’t just about Superhero Thingies™. We’ve got that Love Tesseract™ thing too. And a love story requires a progression and character growth to work.
You can’t have a monster-of-the-week format if you try to explore things that are character-driven, unless there is a clear follow up, an overarching plot.
Like, say…
Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Tumblr media
Utena is one of my favourite shows of all time, and I’m talking live action and animated. It is stylish, the writing is great, the direction work is awesome. It’s a masterpiece and for a show aired in 1997, it aged pretty well in the way it handles it themes. (some of the animation is wonky, though, characters are definitely not always on model, it’s not perfect but hey, 1997)
You should watch Utena. It’s available on Nozomi if you’re from Americaland, otherwise I’m sure you’ll find a way to stream it somewhere. Or buy the BluRay.
So, Utena has a “Duel of the Week” format, it follows a clear formula. And just like Miraculous, it recycles animation and some sentences are said at least once or twice per episode. Hell, Miraculous references Utena quite a few times (but I’ll make a post just for that).
Having a repetitive formula does not mean you cannot have a sense of progression. And Utena shines because of that. Things… Things have consequences, a duel leads to another because of reasons that become clear. It’s not a “we need that many episodes” thing, everything is needed, you cannot not watch an episode, even the recap ones, even the Nanami ones, especially the Nanami ones (Nanami who is a much better Chloé than Chloé is).
Unlike Miraculous, Utena has an overarching plot, you can’t play the episodes in any order. Repetitions and variations are meaningful in Utena, it is not simply a matter of style, or rather, style in Utena is meaningful, not only there for “the show”, a spectacle which in itself is meaningful too. Hell, everything in Utena is meaningful. Meaningful. Could you imagine that much meaning in Miraculous? Me neither.
But, you may say, you’re not fair; you’re comparing Miraculous, a show aimed at schoolchildren, with Utena, an anime aimed at an older audience.
And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong if you thought so. Which is why I’ll reiterate my point with a show for which Thomas Astruc himself worked.
Code Lyoko
Tumblr media
Code Lyoko is super formulaic, replace Hawk Moth with XANA and superpowers with going inside a computer and that’s about it. It recycles a lot of its animation, the character design is… A bold choice. I barely watched it when I was younger though it was a pretty big thing for us Frenchies  (but hey it’s available on YouTube now in French so I binged the entire thing in a few days and while it’s not groundbreaking, it does some things really well)
Code Lyoko is all that, repetitions, terribly formulaic, XANA-tised person/plushie of the week thing with towers to deactivate and whatnot, and a “return to the past” to erase whatever has occurred during the episode. Literally.
But.
Once again, a visible overarching plot, and can you believe it, things have consequences. William is lost on Lyoko, and the kids spend episodes looking for him. There’s romance, and though it is dealt with clumsily, there’s a sense of progression to it. Things… Happen… With… Consequences.
Miraculous is, for the most part, an inconsequential show
Tumblr media
Yeah, the problem with Miraculous is that its overarching plot is muddy and flimsy, the status quo is very much that, I’d argue that it’s a show in which nothing truly happens because nothing has consequences. I mean… Nino and Alya are dating, I guess? Adrien… Is still allergic to pigeon feathers? There are sometimes more than just two heroes? But it doesn’t really matter.
And Oblivio is the perfect example of that.
That’s the message of the episode. Even if we forget things, it still works, there is no need for memory, for remembering what has happened in all the previous episodes because we still make it work somehow. What happened before this episode does not matter to the story we are telling now.
The show keeps telling the same things about its characters, over and over, and whenever something new is introduced… Well it’s great but don’t expect to see it in the episodes after that one.
Which is why specials, story arcs which last two episodes, are good. There is room for developed character moments, interesting interactions, plot, sometimes good fights too. Chloé shines in Queen’s Battle, “Origins” is, for me, probably the best bunch of episodes in the entire show so far because things happen and we can see change happening. Like, actual change. Characters who learn how to do stuff, whose interactions with one another changes over the course of these two episodes.
Outside of this however… Here, have that very important book, we’ll see it in one or two episodes because we need a macguffin and voilà. Here, have new heroes, but don’t expect to see them after that episode, unless we need a real showdown.
It’s hard to get hyped by Jeremy Zag’s posts, because no matter how cool Dragon!Kagami looks, because of that format of self-contained stories with the only connection being them being the same static characters. Kagami with a Kwami? Eh. It’ll be a one-off thing, sure it’ll be cool but to make the plot move on… Don’t sweat it.
Speaking of Kagami, she is presented the exact same way in Frozer and Selfinsertepisode Animaestro, nothing has changed about the character, don’t worry, she’s still going to be used the exact same way, perhaps we’ll show once again that she really cares for Adrien but hey, we already knew that, there’s nothing new in Onichan. And that is symptomatic of the entire cast.
Is that format something the creators of the show absolutely wanted? Is near-stagnation what they wished for? Let’s decide it’s not their choice, and that they try their best with the limitations they have.
Would these flaws be this glaring if new episodes were aired weekly? Like, say, air three episodes during three weeks, a break and then some new episodes again? I think not. The wait and the lack of follow-up from one episode to the next makes them really noticeable, and watching them feels unfulfilling.
So that airing schedule I just suggested? That’s not how things work, that’s not how television works apparently and there’s nothing the people who work on Miraculous can ask about it. Thomas Astruc doesn’t know when the episodes will air, blah blah blah. Television networks not really caring about the shows they air? Never heard of that before, huh. SU
So I guess this is it, then. I hope you enjoyed this overlong post!
(shameful self-promotion moment, but about Kagami, I wrote a Kagaminette/Marigami fic, it’s 80,000 words so far and I update it on Mondays so give it a look if you want! It’s here.)

I'm sorry, I know I don't usually post discourse on my blog. I'm just... really hurt right now.
At the age of 24, after spending my entire childhood forcing myself to believe I was straight because that's what my family and religion said I was supposed to be, I finally acknowledged that I was bisexual. Even then, I was still second-guessing myself: What if I only think I'm bisexual because the internet/social media makes it seem like the "In" thing? What if my sexuality is just a mask and not who I really am? What if, what if, what if. It was hard.
Then I saw Voltron. Lance seemed to have a bisexuality arc laid out for him, and it was obvious that he didn't quite know he was bi and/or wasn't emotionally ready to acknowledge it.
That was just so validating. It made me happy to know that being confused about your sexuality -- not being sure if you're the sexuality you think you might be -- was common enough to include it in a kid's show and it made me feel so much better! I was so happy, and with Lance's help (and the help of my friends and therapist), I was able to finally accept my sexuality for what it was. And I'm an adult. Think about how many kids his arc could have helped! Kids who were questioning, kids who were unsure, kids that might not being surrounded by a good support system and have to hide who they are. Lance was shaping up to be someone kids could really look up, admire, and in turn accept themselves for they are because of him.
And now that's washed down the drain. It meant so much to me, perhaps meant so much to a lot of kids that needed that role model, but it clearly meant nothing to the writers and that is just so disheartening.
This isn't even about shipping. I love K/ance with all my heart, but I would be okay with any endgame ship so long as it was written well. This includes keeping the characters in-character and allowing the romance to help in their character development. Keith was the most likely candidate -- he really did make Lance a better person and vice versa -- but if someone else filled that role and filled it well, I would have been perfectly fine with that! But that's not what we got. Instead, the boy who has been insecure ALL SERIES has to spend his only romance building up his partner and have that not be reciprocated. That most-likely-candidate boosted him up more than Lance's actual romantic partner, and that is just bad writing. That's not a good relationship. Relationships are two-way streets; you can't have only one of the partners be supportive -- they have to be EQUALLY supportive. And A//urance was not that. A//urance was rushed, did not help the characters develop in the slightest, and took away TWO great role models.
I don't like Allura. I think I've made this clear before, but I really don't like her. I was neutral to her in s1, then the whole Not-All-Galra arc happened in s2 and my opinion of her started going down at that point.
But she didn't deserve the hand she was dealt. She was the only woman of color in the main cast, and they KILL HER??? WHY????? I may not have liked her, but that doesn't mean she was a bad character! On the contrary, she was a great role model and I'm sure many girls of color looked up to her. And then they just kill her? First they take away the great role model Lance could have been as a confused bisexual character, and then they take away the only woman of color on the main cast. WHAT. THE. FUCK. You can't just do that! I feel so horrible for the kids who looked up to those characters only to have it all ripped out from under their feet.
Oh, but there was a random gay wedding at the end, so that makes it alllllllll better~
Except it doesn't. Adding in a gay wedding/kiss with little-to-no build-up is more likely to cause confusion than anything else. And it doesn't erase how dirty they did Lance and Allura. Both characters deserved better.
On the topic of shipping, yes, it was queerbait. I refused to believe the showrunners were doing that -- I absolutely refused because I trusted the showrunners completely. Surely they wouldn't have ALL OF THESE ROMANTIC PARALLELS between K/L with other canon romantic couples for nothing. Surely they wouldn't have developed K/L's relationship more than any other relationship unless there was a really good reason for it. SURELY THEY WOULDN'T BE OKAY WITH VAGUING ABOUT THE SHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND BEING OKAY WITH DW USING K/L FOR MARKETING PURPOSES IF IT WASN'T GOING TO HAPPEN.
But nope. All of the media techniques to subtly hint at a romance used specifically for K/L meant nothing. It was just bros being bros nothing gay here.
And that is BULLSHIT.
Honestly, the whole season just screams, "SHOCK VALUE," to me. They wanted to shock people, but I don't think they really considered the repercussions of how they were doing it. I get shock value, bringing up the interest and encouraging audiences to rewatch the series to understand why the shock was actually built-up from the beginning, but there's right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. Voltron took the wrong way and screwed it up royally.
To be clear, I am not against straight ships. Far from it, some of my favorite ships are heterosexual. Nor do I fetishize mlm relationships -- K/L is only the second mlm relationship I've come to really love (the first being Hau and Gladion from Pokemon Sun & Moon). It's just that K/L really struck a chord with me and with so many other people, and to take that away for the sake of a straight ship and some shitty shock value? Dirty thing to do to the show's audience. Don't build up proper LGBT+ rep UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY FUCKING HAVE IT. The only rep? Shiro, and a hastily-added Zethrid/Ezor ship. Blaytz, too, but that was glossed over tbh and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the audience (not on tumblr because we analyze everything to death lol) completely forgot about Blaytz's interaction with that make Galra. That's not proper rep. That's throwing it in and thinking, "It exists so our job is done."
Media in general has being doing LGBT+ rep dirty for SO LONG. Even when we had positive LGBT+ characters in media, they were still characters based off of gay stereotypes. They were good positive characters, but were still perpetuating a certain bias against LGBT+ by displaying these stereotypes as fact. Times are supposed to be different now. We're supposed to be progressing, making it BETTER. I really thought Voltron was going to be part of that progress, that it would give us a well-written, well-developed, well-loved LGBT+ representation for kids of this generation to look up to and admire and learn acceptance -- about themselves and about others -- from. Instead, the showrunners three half-assed, tacked on LGBT+ reps and called it a day.
THAT'S NOT COOL.
This isn't about ships. This is about proper media representation for the LGBT+ community -- something that is really scarce, even now -- and how it affects the LGBT+ community when it's done badly. This also goes for racial rep. You can take two misrepresented groups and treat them horribly and then call it good rep. IT ISN'T. The poor representation of the LGBT+ community has proved to be detrimental in society's view of them. THIS DOESN'T HELP.
*sigh*
Off the topic of that, can we talk about how shit the writing was? Because it was really shit.
I'll admit that while I like s7, it wasn't written amazingly-well. Still, it wasn't bad and did have plenty of interesting episodes. Even with all of the asspulls we got in the last episode, it was still awesome because we got to see Shiro back in his element after losing almost everything in prior seasons. It was a mix of good writing and bad writing, but the good writing made up for the bad.
The seasons previous to that were well-done. Maybe not s4, but the other seasons were well-written and really enjoyable! There's a reason the show took off; the plot maybe standard, but the characters, character dynamics, and relationships were fantastic and were the true driving force behind the series and its success.
So why was s8 so all over the place? Why were plot threads that had been hinted at or outright confirmed left hanging or tied together hastily? So many things were alluded to in previous seasons only to lead to NOTHING. WHY???
Why did everyone BUT Lance get an arc?
What was the point of Lance getting a sword if it was never going to be brought up again?
Why was Keith's arc suddenly thrown to the wayside?
Why did Allura have to DIE for her arc to reach its conclusion?
WHY?
So many people complained about bad writing in Voltron, but I had always believed that the writing in Voltron was relatively good. Sure, it had its problems (like the entirety of s4, and the MFEs being boring as shit), but it was mostly a well-rounded show with well-rounded characters.
And s8... just threw all of that away.
All of that potential, all of those good arcs -- wasted.
The writing went downhill SO fast, and it's just such a shame. Something that meant so much to me has dissolved into the mess s8 was. It's disheartening.
I also want to apologize to all of my followers who followed me because my K/L optimism and metas. I'm sorry if I got your hopes up; I really thought K/L was the logical conclusion -- everything was building up to it, right from the first episode and even continuing in s7 (hell, even s8 added to it) -- and I truly thought the writers were going to follow through with all of the logical conclusions the previous seasons built up. I had faith in them, but I was wrong. For that, I apologize. I know it's just a cartoon show, but I also know how influential and meaningful media can be -- especially for marginalized groups -- so if my hype bringing you up made your fall harder when s8 was released, I am so sorry. You didn't deserve that; nobody in the fandom did.
I'm so jaded and disillusioned right now. Voltron has been a major inspiration for me; I originally decided to be a cartoonist to bring LGBT+ representation to children's media because of Steven Universe, but it was Voltron that really motivated me to reach that goal. I looked up to Voltron -- it was my muse, my main inspiration. I've learned so much about writing -- writing character arcs, relationships, etc. -- from Voltron and all of the analyzing people did. Seeing it devolve into what it did is upsetting. Something I loved so much has let me down, and I'm hurt and disappointed.
But more than ever, I want to create cartoons that don't do this; cartoons that tie up its loose ends, follow through with obvious character relationships, puts the main characters through complete arcs, and give proper development to them all. Cartoons that have proper LGBT+ and racial representation -- with LGBT+/characters of color that can be admired, that won't fall flat, that will teach the children of the generation about acceptance of others and acceptance of yourself regardless of sexuality, skin color, gender identity, etc. Voltron failed in that aspect; it was a compelling show that failed in everything it needed to succeed in. I refuse to make that same mistake.
With that, let's all look ahead to future and enjoy the fanworks that do these wonderful characters justice. Let Voltron's failure inspire you to create and make something better, something that will be much more impactful, much more meaningful.
Don't let it get you down; let it bring you up.

[Review] Kamen Rider Build (Overall thoughts)
It's that time of the year where Rider fans become emotional, potentially sad, potentially thinking about the future. Here, we’ll be talking about the setting, characters, plot, and really dig into that ending.
But I guess first off, I’ll say one thing here: If you’ve followed the blog closely, you know that I really fell behind on the show a lot. That has nothing to do with the show, it’s just a me thing. When I watched, I was enjoying every episode, and kicking myself for letting so many episodes go by without watching it.
With that said, let’s get into the reasons why I found it entertaining.
Tumblr media
Kamen Rider as a whole has all of these tropes and recurring themes going all the way back to the Showa era, and while Build has those things, it creates a unique setting around it.
We're introduced to the world of Build after what is essentially a post-apocalyptic event, at least for Japan. The Skywall left them separated, with hints of a war in the midst due to the item that would grant any one of them absolute power.
At best, most Rider shows have a mysterious event took place in the past, more often an isolated incident that doesn't really have that much of an impact until the end of the show. This feels like a more impactful version of Kabuto's "A meteor previously destroyed one of our cities" opening premise, as it gives us a very unique setting where Japan is split into three types of nations, with robot sentries and abnormal mutations running around.
More importantly, we aren't even halfway into the show when a status quo hits us and we're put into a proper war between the nations. It leaves us with empty cities for most of the show's run.
I know I commented on this a while back, and I kinda feel like it needs a followup now that the show is over: The show was dabbling in a lot of what I call "Real world monsters". Back when Gaim was going on, I recall thinking it was unexpected for a character to comment so realistically about how humans are always at war with each other, because it seemed like a heavy subject for a kid's show. Fast forward to Build where that's just the entire show.
We spent the last year with a kids show dabbling in war and conspiracies, and when it became apparent that they were leaning heavily into these subjects, I wondered if maybe the show would take a much different direction in the end, causing us to go “Yeah it was weird when the show talked about war for about 1/3 of the story”. But as it turns out, that theme stuck and resonated in the characters. They go through a lot over the course of 49 episodes.
Tumblr media
It's not uncommon for a Rider protag to be affected by a death, but Sento actually causes the death of a human and is legitimately haunted by his actions, not to mention the baggage of being the brainwashed creator of a combat system that started all of this fighting. It's also not uncommon for the protag to frequently hit an emotional rut that leads them to a newfound resolve, but I feel like this show really justifies it.
Sento frequently struggles with the idea of heroism because he keeps being challenged by these contradictions about himself, and the idea of heroism is constantly being mocked by the more cynical enemies he faces - even so, he kept fighting. He was once a member of Faust, he lost control and took a life, his father turned out to be one of his enemies for a bit... The dude went to hell and back, and I feel like his final form debut - as late as it was - felt so earned because of all he went through.
And this is to say nothing about his genius! I love Sento because he lives up to the hype. Before Build began, they talked about how Sento was the smartest of all the Heisei Rider leads, and it shows. He not only made his own Rider gear, as well as gear for other people, he also FREQUENTLY displayed his intelligence by planning ahead outside of battle. The dude would plan ahead by a couple episodes, even. He accounts for a lot of things and it's so satisfying to watch him get the upper hand, especially knowing just how much emotional baggage he has to carry. It’s beautiful catharsis.
When it comes to the amnesia angle, followed by the Katsuragi reveal, I figured it was a nice twist. It makes more sense once you get further along in the show and learn more about who Blood Stalk was and why he had these powers. It was also interesting to have Katsuragi exist in Sento’s head after a while, giving him more staying power than I actually expected. I also must commend them for not only doing the “Katsuragi remembers who he is” subplot, and doing it for more than one episode. I’m just overall really pleased with how those things all worked out.
It also must be said that the show did a great job sticking to this "The hero is created from evil" trope from the original Kamen Rider. They said from the start that this show would be focused on that idea, and they never strayed from it. Pretty much all the Riders (save for the villain) are kind of a different flavor of that idea. Just in general, I think it can be said that the show was consistent.
Tumblr media
And I can't talk about Sento without immediately talking about Ryuga. Along with the things mentioned about the main character, they also said that this show would be about “the feelings between these two men!” (context~), and once you see the first couple of episodes, you get what they mean. It's clever to have two leads who are such opposites, the classic Brain VS Brawn. The two played well off of each other til the very end.
Ryuga was also nice to have in the cast due to the (at the time) lack of background for Sento. The main character already had his origin story a while back, so most of the early episode were just about him doing his usual hero thing. Ryuga, on the other hand, gave us an on-screen origin story. We actually get to see his transition from a selfish hothead to a hero who wants to fight for the sake of others, and by the end of the show he goes out of his way to sacrifice himself like Sento would’ve.
Knowing where the plot eventually went with Evolt, it makes so much sense why Ryuga got this much focus, right down to the winter movie teaching him more about why a Kamen Rider fights for the sake of others. It just all worked out so well.
Tumblr media
Kazumi was a character I was super interested in. I loved the actor in Kiva, and when he was introduced, it seemed like he’d be playing a charming character once more. But as we learned more about him, I think he turned out to be a character with more depth. Don’t get me wrong, Otoya is the best thing about Kiva, but I think of him as a cartoon character with some hidden depth, whereas Kazumi feels like a human being.
I was a little uncertain on what they were gonna do with him at first - he was treated as a soldier of sorts who had amnesia like Sento, and his trio of Hard Smash bros seemed upset that he didn’t remember them. But as you kept going, you learn that he was just pretending to have amnesia for a reason, which is clever.
Kazumi is tough, but you realize that he has heart once you see his friends get killed off one by one. He will show no mercy towards the people who caused him to lose his only friends, and that sense of heroism eventually made him a part of the team.
The transition from antagonist to hero was natural, and I loved the character, whether he was being comical or serious. The actor knew how to play both.
Tumblr media
Gentoku is where things get a little more shaky.
I’m sure I’ve said before, but Gentoku was a character I didn’t put much stake into because his role as Night Rogue was obvious, and to me, Night Rogue’s role in the story was obvious: He was the strongest villain we had as of episode 1, meaning he would be killed off by the first power-up Build obtains. That being said, the character stuck around, which makes sense in retrospect since Build’s not about killing.
Gentoku went away for a while, then came back as an edgelord. While I found some part of him interesting and thought he rocked that look pretty well, the backstory was just a little too over-the-top edgy for my liking. It honestly felt pretentious in a way. I kinda just let him do his thing.
Then they did something interesting with him, revealing that once he became Rogue, the nebula gas that made him so villainous was wearing off, and he was now starting to show some heroism as he rescued his father from the people he was taking orders from. Then once his father died in his arms, his transition into a hero would begin.
And, okay. Okay. The comedy they use on him at this point is a bit out of place, as fun as it was. It’s one of those things where, if you want to you can form a headcanon to make sense of it, but it’d be nice if they addressed it themselves. When he was just being a good guy, I found him really endearing.
Oh and since he was palling around with the gear bros, I guess I’ll just say that... I said what I needed to say about them in their last episode. They were badass but a little too cool to have any personality outside of being a duo, so they didn’t do much for me as characters. But they looked cool.
Tumblr media
Utsumi is a character i don’t have as much to say about, but since I’m talking about Riders I guess I’ll reiterate what I said before.
Like Gentoku, I didn’t have much stake in Utsumi at first, but I figured since he was working with Gentoku, he probably had something to show. When he ended up getting shot and fell off a bridge, I thought it was a lil weird he came back without seemingly being hurt. Then that one episode addressed it by saying he was a cyborg now, a twist I was not expecting, but it was an interesting choice.
I was honestly hoping that Utsumi would come back as Rogue, only because it’d be fitting if Night Rogue got killed off by Utsumi using a name stolen from him. But it made sense for Gentoku to be Rogue, of course, and Utsumi had some fun moments as the man giving him orders.
Once he turned to Evolt, after seeing his mentor die, I thought it was a liiiittle forced, and honestly thought he just cracked. But once again, that one episode addressed it by revealing that he was still loyal to his mentor’s cause and was... kind of a secret hero all along.
Utsumi turned out to be more interesting than expected, and it’s a bit of a shame he’s-- well I guess he’s fine now thanks to the ending, but I wouldn’t have minded him being fixed if we weren’t aiming for that kind of ending.
Tumblr media
Now... we talk about this guy.
Okay, so, Isurugi is an interesting character on his own. He’s an astronaut! He makes coffee now! He has red shades! He was a super fun supporting character, and I think it was brilliant(ly heartbreaking) for him to turn out to be a villain. It makes up for how obvious Night Rogue was.
Blood Stalk was definitely the more interesting villain to follow because he was playing a much different game than the other groups in the show, and he seemed to have a lot of power on his side that wasn’t totally explained for a while - a friend and I figured he was actually an alien just screwing with humans, and I can’t believe that was such a perfect prediction.
I suppose once his role as Evolt is revealed, he sorta sssstops being interesting in that regard, because he’s no longer mysterious. A good way to put it, which I saw going around, is that he feels like a Dragon Ball Z villain. Not too much depth, just an uncomfortably strong guy that’s toying with people and will be destroying this planet once he’s had his fun. And I’m fine with that I suppose, I like a DBZ once in a while.
About this point in the show, I saw some fair criticisms about the pacing of the plot that suggested it was getting dragged out, aaand I kinda see that but kinda disagree? It definitely feels like Build and Evol keep getting the upper hand on each other, but I think of that as a display of their intellect. They’re playing this big game of chess, and sure, that can elongate a plot, but I found it entertaining at least.
Now if there’s any criticism I have about the show by this point, it’s that we never really get a true followup on Isurugi once Evolt leaves his body. Like, we know that he was chilling out in the hospital, unconscious, but the next time we see him is in the ending when everything has been fixed.
Tumblr media
Supporting characters next.
Misora is a character I don’t have a whole lot to talk about, she was fun when she delivered deadpan comedy, her connection to Isurugi (and thus, the villain) was interesting, found the Mii-tan stuff a little unnecessary but it provided some fun banter with Kazumi... decent gal. It was heartwarming seeing her live a normal life in the ending. She’s been through as much emotional turmoil as the Riders.
Sawa was interesting, because I expected her to just be a journalist, but she turned out to be a huge player in the villains as a spy. She was eventually caught, and I thought it was both surprising and impactful when she remarks that she was actually supposed to kill herself at one point and couldn’t bring herself to it because spending time with the heroes made her realize what it was like to have real friends. She was used cleverly, even if her backstory seemed pretty crazy.
As for other characters, man there’s a lot. I think it’s enough to say that what I talked about in previous reviews is still applicable now. Namba was interesting, and the way they bring back previous victims is clever. I don’t think there’s anyone that didn’t serve a purpose.
Tumblr media
Hoo boy, been going for a while... I think it’s time we wrap this up and talk about the ending. Well, at least saying things I didn’t talk about in the last review. I’ll assume you know where all the characters are as of this change in their timeline.
It was THE cathartic moment for the show, because leading up to the final episode, you really see everyone drop like flies. Kazumi knows his fate and goes in for one last rodeo, Utsumi sacrifices himself, Gentoku tries to live up to his father’s legacy as a man of the people, and Ryuga attempts to send Evolt away for good. Even Sento started to get some of that death aura in the final battle...
A common complaint for a Rider show is the undoing of death. The best known example of this is in W, and I’d also put up Fourze. That moment when they kill off a character in a big dramatic way only to undo it in the next episode. It’s a tad cheap, and while you could say Build did that, I think it did it well - it creates a new world where all our favorite characters didn’t go through all this turmoil, while still making it a bit sad by not having them know each other. In that sense, they did die, but at the same time, they live.
I guess the first thing I wanna bring up is... wow we did the Ryuki ending, huh? Ryuki is like 2002 so it should be okay to spoil. Unlike Ryuki, the protag(s) remembers what happened, so that makes things more interesting and opens the way for future crossovers, albeit without a huge cast.
Zi-O is using time travel to work in Build (so they just went to a time when Build and Cross-Z were still rocking their first forms), we don’t know what the upcoming winter movie will be doing, so all we can look forward to for the moment is the Cross-Z movie. Very interested to see how that goes.
I will also address that there’s some weird implications to this new timeline that unfortunately haven’t been addressed in the show, and I HOPE they do in the movie because this is a big burning question: Is the technology still the same, and did the Mars mission still happen? Because without Evolt’s presence, Mars would presumably still be a planet with life on it.
Well, okay, I’ve done some thinking and can kinda address that, but not really.
Namba was involved with Japan’s unmanned space probe. As we see in this new world... I guess Namba is a non-military company now, meaning they probably wouldn’t have contributed to the space mission? I dunno, that’s my best guess. It’d probably also explain why we don’t see Guardians.
It’s a bit of a stretch if that’s the intent, just arbitrarily retconning Namba, but I guess it serves as an explanation. Still, unless life on Mars just ceased to exist a long time ago, someone has to have seen something when they looked into a telescope.
With that burning question out of the way, I dunno if there’s much else to talk about with this new world. It exists, and I wanna see what they do with it.
Tumblr media
And that... finally, is all there is to Build.
I enjoyed the hell out of this show. It was dark, it was emotional, it was funny when it wanted to be, and it was solid all the way through. Well, okay, like any show, it has flaws. But I think that when a show has so much positive stuff going for it, that can negate the flaws. I consistently had fun from start to finish and I don’t always get to say that.
Whenever a Rider show ends, I come back to my little list of shows. I’ve seen all of the Heisei Kamen Riders, so I like to make a list of which ones are my most favorite to least favorite. Here’s the top 5 of that list, in descending order.
Gaim - Solid story, solid characters, just a fun trip all around.
Build - Unique premise, strong characterization, consistent.
W - Nicely written plot with fantastic monsters and memorible characters.
Ex-Aid - Great concept, good characterization, pretty solid execution.
Den-O - Fun and funny, interesting cast, compelling story.
It’s really lucky that the shows I’ve made blogs for are ones that I enjoyed enough to put so high above the others. And as I’ve said in the past, I’ll be stepping away from doing new blogs, especially since a big crossover show would be insanity to keep up with in the style of blog I like to do.
With Build basically over, I’ll pop in now and again to do an occasional review of the movies/bonus material.
Thank you for following up to this point. It’s been a fun ride.

fren! i saw yesterday that crunchyroll was making their own anime??? called high guardian spice??? have u heard of it? wanted to know ur thoughts!
I have heard of it yes! :D Honestly I think it’s a bit complicated in many ways. Not the show itself but like everything surrounding it, and the way its being marketed.
Crunchyroll has always said “Watch anime with us legally because we put that money back into the anime industry!” and then they... fun their own cartoon with the money they say they’re paying back to the anime industry? ...lol whut? 8D
And then the other thing is the trailer from what I’ve seen says very little about the show itself, and is more like a DVD extras “behind the scenes” kind of thing which is... a bad way to market a show. How am I suppose to know if I like this show or not if you don’t show me the show? Telling me how woke your studio is is not giving me any insight into whether it will be a show I want to watch or not.
It’s just REALLY bad marketing :/ Just like... just show the show.
Do... do you have enough completed footage to DO that? ....if not... isn’t it a little EARLY to try generate hype for the show when it’s not even finished yet????
Honestly, if Crunchyroll had just actually made a trailer showing the show and not spent the entirety of it trying to convince its audience how woke they are, the reaction to this show would not be the dumpster fire it is. But then.... that’s the trick isn’t it? Get man babies to whine about a show, market on the fact that the show is being attacked by “anti-feminists” and then rally the feminist crowd to its defense to ludicrous degrees. BEFORE THE SHOW IS EVEN OUT.
But you can’t really get past that first thing. Animation is expensive. So like... I dunno. It feels like Crunchyroll has been deceitful with that it uses its membership’s fees for you know? And people don’t like that kind of thing.
So like... I can’t give an opinion on the show itself because I have barely been shown the show X’DD
What I can say is 1: I’m glad with a lack of magical girl anime other countries are picking up the slack
2: the background linework looks nice from what I’ve seen, I just hope they don’t hide all that detail when they get coloured
and 3: the art style isn’t bad but I don’t really like it. But then I’m not a fan of the ‘CalArts’ character design look. And although there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, I don’t like that weird hybrid between western animation and anime. I don’t know why. I just don’t find it appealing.
However that’s entirely subjective and just my personal taste.
Tumblr media
(It’s not quite anime but it’s not quite a cartoon)
I feel this show has been badly marketed and has reached a point where the hype from both sides (either to love it or to hate it) is reaching a point where the show will probably not manage to live up to either ^^;
But as for a show on its own, I am expecting a kind of show with 11 minute episodes, possibly about 10 of them perhaps? maybe 12 or so. I do hope it’s good! But I am not expecting a world shattering narrative like you’d find in Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura. I’m expecting more something along the lines of Emara or Bee and Puppycat.
Hopefully it can encourage more magical girl shows though. Both from the west as well as Japan itself when the anime industry realise they’re missing out on a willing market. (like horror games did when Amnesia was released and everyone went “OH SHIT! PEOPLE STILL LIKE HORROR GAMES!”)
