If there was one thing anyone could tell you about Kestrel Scar Goodtimes, it was that he was a liar. And a very good one at that.
The second thing was that, like any doomed man, he had ghosts snapping at his heels, and the seas were not his friend.
(There are five rules for anything to do with the things beneath Scar’s boat)
The water is dark where his ship lays docked, shadows rolling beneath the waves that follow it wherever it sails.
Captain Sausage comments on it, only once. But the shrieking laughter that erupts from the dark mass follows him into his nightmares for days after, and he learns to avert his eyes, lest he dream of something like screaming again.
(The first rule you need to know is that if you speak of them, then they’ll visit)
Whatever haunts him sends his boat rocking at every move, lurching wildly to both sides. They cannot overturn it. Not yet. They’re young still, in death. His days are counting down, but for now, he simply learns to work with it, and politely smiles when others decline to come aboard, eyeing the things below.
(The second rule is that they’re only here to haunt one man, but if you get in the way, they’ll happily take you overboard too)
Scott Denholm dips his feet into the sea, decidely drunk. A hand settles against his leg, light and curious. It feels like a hello. A pair of eyes in the water, shining blue, blink up at him in greeting. There’s a name on the tip of his tongue, as he dips his fingers into the waves to clasp someone else’s. It feels like running into an old friend.
And then he’s hauled back into someone’s chest, looking up at a pale face as Martyn shouts at him. The thing in the water is gone, and Scar’s ship sways beside them, waiting for the realization to cut through the alcohol’s pleasant fuzz.
(The third is that they remember things you don’t, and are all the more bitter for it. Sometimes though, it means they’ll play favorites)
Oli tries to sing to them sometimes, usually in boredom than any real desire to soothe the things in the water. Most days they seem to delight in it, muffled calls rising up to join his half-strung shanties, distracted from rocking Scar’s ship as much as usual.
Some days though, it seems to do nothing but grate on their ears and nerves, if they possess them in any sense, and instead shrieking loud enough to make ears bleed while they turn their violent attention towards whoever’s ship he’s on, be it his own or others.
(The fourth rule is that while they can be appeased, they can just as easily be angered, often in the same method. Dead things do not care for predictability)
There are good days and bad days, for Scar Goodtimes’ trips at sea. The good ones are more usual lately, plently of things in his new area distracting his phantoms and drawing them from their usual destructive habits. Of course, then comes the days they make up for it tenfold.
Those days, even the ocean bends to their wrath. The sky darkens and pours, as it did so many years ago when they toppled overboard with gaping wounds that bled the water red. The thunder screams in tandem with a past long gone and hidden, behind deceptive smiles and tongues lost to landfolk’s ears.
The tide pushes with them, putting it’s strength behind their clawing hands to try and bring the ship beneath the waves where it has belonged since the moment he put them all down there. The scent of blood in the water brings all sorts of deadly things about, waiting for the stronger predators to reach their prey, hoping for the scraps their messy kill will surely leave behind.
Those days, Scar docks his ship wherever he can, and makes his way towards whoever he can. Sausage is easiest, an arm tossed over his shoulder and a look directed at the water has it writhing in anger even as his captain guides him away.
Martyn too, works, though not quite to the same extent. He’s of similar nature to Scar, after all. He looks out for himself before anyone else.
If he’s feeling particularly bold(or as some might put, cruel), he invites his two favorite Herons out to talk about interesting new discoveries by the ship. Scott and Cleo always keep one wary eye on him, which works just fine, because it means they don’t look too hard at the sudden, furious stillness of the water, or the hand settled where he keeps his blade in a familiar threat-to his ghosts, of course. The two Herons would just be the unfortunate collateral his warning requires.
Scar is a dead man walking. He’s not too concerned-he’s very good at stretching both the truth, and his time.
(The fifth rule is that they are going to win, in this battle of patience. That no matter what he does, they’ll still be there, waiting for any slip.
But they can be held back. If you’re clever, and you know what to look for.
If you know what to hold over their heads)

An Ashton & Posy Adventure--Luke&Lily oneshot
Just a fun little something before introducing the new baby!

There’s a lot of commotion at the Hemming’s house when Ashton enters the door. Oliver is crying as he follows you around the living room, his arms up wanting to be held. You’re talking softly to him as you pick up toys. Posy is in the kitchen with Petunia trying to teach her tricks by dangling treats. Petunia is barking loudly. It’s Saturday so Lily is over by Cory and Ella’s.
“Lovie, have you seen my wallet?” Luke appears from the hallway then swiftly scoops Oliver into his arms. He quiets a little but is still reaching for you.
“Should be where you always put it,” you sigh folding up a fuzzy plane blanket, “the kitchen counter. When is–oh! Ashton, how long have you been here?”
The three of you face Ashton, Oliver’s sniffling and rubbing at his eyes.
“Not too long,” Ashton shakes his head with a smile. “You remember me and Posy are spending the day together, right?”
“Of course we did! Sorry–” you take Oliver from Luke and he nestles into your neck– “it’s been a crazy morning.”
“Hey bug,” Luke calls to Posy, “did you see who’s here?”
“Huh? UNCA ASH!”
She drops the treats for Petunia who gobbles them up and Posy runs towards Ashton. He lifts her in his arms for a big hug, her little arms wrapped around his neck tightly.
“Hi little one, are you ready for our adventure day?”
“Yes!”
“Go get your shoes, Pose,” you tell her. You’re bouncing Oliver and rubbing at his back. He hasn’t been feeling well and has been signing ‘hold me’ for the last week. He also has been tugging at his ears so you think he has an ear infection but you have to wait until Monday to go see the doctor.
Ashton sets Posy down and she runs to her room.
“Does she have a bag?” Ashton asks.
“Yeah. It’s got extra clothes, some snacks, and her water bottle,” Luke moves into the kitchen to grab her red backpack. “Which beach are you going to?”
“Big Rock. They have cool tide pools she’ll like and we can collect rocks and shells.”
“She’ll love that,” you smile and kiss the side of Oliver’s head.
“Little guy’s still not feeling well?” Ashton pouts approaching you. He cocks his head to look at his nephew then rubs his curls atop his head.
“No, so he’s extra cuddly,” you hum.
“I’m sure mama’s cuddles help a ton, huh buddy? How’re you doing?”
“Great! I’ve got a ton of energy all of a sudden so I’ve been cleaning the house.”
“Luke says you’ve got the crib set up in Oli’s room?”
“Yeah,” you sigh. “With my due date happening in a little less than a month it’s too late to house hunt. Crystal keeps sending me links though so maybe after a few months we can go look at some.”
“And he’s still not talking?”
“Not yet. His hearing is fine, so that’s good. But with him being a preemie, he’s just taking a little bit more time,” you smile and stroke his cheek lovingly.
“I’m ready! I have my matching hat!” Posy announces and she plops her green bucket hat on her head. She always stole Ashton’s. She also has her own small backpack, some books, and a bright blue mesh bag. In her excitement some of her books fell to the floor.
“You don’t need your whole room, little one,” Ashton giggles then makes his way over to his niece to help her pick up the books.
“They’re books of rocks and shells! And I got a rock collecting bag,” she explains holding up the blue mesh bag.
“She’s been looking forward to your adventure day for weeks,” you smile. Your voice is softer now because Oliver has fallen asleep.
“I’ve been looking forward to it, too,” he smiles down at Posy. “Let’s take two books, okay? Which ones do you want?”
She selects the one about shells and a Bluey book.
“Perfect. Ready to go, munchkin?” Ashton asks.
He gathers her things while she says goodbye to you and Luke. Once she’s settled in her carseat Ashton presses play on her favorite playlist and starts the thirty minute drive to the beach. Posy fills him in about school and her karate class and how Oliver can sign her name now.
“Where’s Auntie Kay?” she asks kicking her feet.
“She’s away taking pictures for her job, she’ll be home soon.”
“Can we have a sleepover again?”
“That’s a great idea and I know Auntie Kay will love it. We’re almost to the beach, Po.”
When they arrive, they use the bathroom first and then carry all of their beach belongings. Ashton mainly has everything until they find a spot in the sand. It’s a nice warm day with a cool breeze from the ocean.
“Can I take off my shoes?” Posy asks while he weighs down the blanket with some rocks.
“The water might be a little cold,” Ashton warns.
“I’m tough,” she plants her hands on her hips and has a little scowl on her face.
Ashton can’t help but laugh because she looks exactly like you and Luke right now.
“Okay, we’ll try it. But if it is too cold we’ll both put our shoes back on. Deal?”
“Okay!”
With her mesh bag slung over her shoulders, niece and uncle walk along the sand holding hands. They collect a lot of shells and rocks and Posy loves wading into the water feeling the sand squish between her toes. They read her books together and enjoy their snacks while watching birds fly across the water.
She even steals his phone and they have a small photoshoot with each other. Posy places her shells on his forearms so they’re in the circles of his moons and takes a picture of that as well. After a few hours they walk along the beach again.
“What’s that?” she gasps suddenly stopping.
“What’s what?”
“That noise!”
She lets go of his hand and runs to a small forested area. Ashton runs after her, eying the place to make sure nothing dangerous was hidden inside. He hears something that sounds like chirping.
“It’s a nest!” she gasps and gets on her knees to crawl inside.
“Posy!” Ashton tries to grab her feet but she’s in the underbrush and he gets on all fours to follow her. “You need to be careful, you don’t know what’s in here.”
“Look! It’s baby birds!”
The two of them gaze at a nest that is clearly broken. There’s only one small bird inside and Ashton knows it’s a little duckling. His eyes gaze around to see broken shells and racoon prints. The one small duck is chirping softly beneath the sand, sticks and leaves.
“Hi buddy,” Posy greets softly and picks him up in her small hands. “Look, Unca Ash!”
“Very nice,” Ashton says. He’s distracted trying to find the mother duck but it’s silent. Was the duckling abandoned? “Let’s go back to the blanket.”
They scramble out of the brush and back onto the sand, Posy is still holding the duckling.
“He likes me!” she smiles gleefully as the duck fits comfortably in her hold. “We need to take care of him.”
“I don’t–”
“Please? He’s only a baby,” Posy pouts up at him with puppy eyes. Ashton sighs.
“Okay. But let’s take him back to my house, okay?”
“Yay!” She skips away and Ashton has a fleeting thought of yours and Luke’s faces if Ashton brought back a duckling to their house.

Posy found things around his house to put the duckling in, an old fish tank with newspaper on the bottom and a small dish of water. While he put away the beach things she went out in the backyard in search of worms to feed the duck. To Ashton’s astonishment, the little yellow bird followed her around in the grass. He then searched on his phone what to do to take care of a duckling but stopped so he could take video of the duck following Posy.
According to Google, ducks can imprint on humans if they’re the first thing they see and that little duck followed Posy everywhere. Ashton had her pose for pictures which he sent to you and Luke.
“I love him, Unca Ash,” Posy giggles and nuzzles her nose against the ducks soft fuzzy head.
“What are you going to name him?”
“Philbert.”
“That’s the best name ever.”
Little did he know how deep and true the imprinting would be because when it was time to take Posy home, Philbert went ballistic in the fish tank. Ashton hoped you and Luke wouldn’t be too mad about bringing home a stray duck.

Taking a Bite Out of Pi
Scientists consider about 1 percent of Earth’s 200,000 glaciers to be surging. This type of glacier goes through prolonged periods of quiescence and slow ice flow, when extra ice builds up at high elevations, followed by periods when ice lurches forward in a burst, in some cases flowing 10 to 100 times faster than normal for periods of months to years.
Surges typically begin when excess meltwater builds up along the bottom of a glacier, lubricating the contact area between the glacier and ground and making it easier for the glacier to slide. Though it varies by glacier, surges usually last fewer than two years and occur every 15 to 100 years.
Changes during surges can be dramatic, especially when glaciers flow into the ocean. When this happens, extra water infiltrates the land-ice interface, allowing the glacier to slide even faster, sometimes by tens of meters per day. When surges subside and marine-terminating glaciers enter the inactive part of the cycle, waves and tides can beat back the glaciers as quickly—or even more quickly—than they advanced.
That’s what has happened in recent decades at Sortebræ, a large surge-type glacier in eastern Greenland that drains into a fjord that leads to the North Atlantic Ocean. The pair of Landsat images above illustrates how much the glacier has changed in nearly four decades.
The top image , acquired by the Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5, shows Sortebræ and several of its tributary glaciers in 1986, six years prior to a period of surging. The glacier’s main trunk and its tributaries flowed together into one stream, creating a distinctive shape resembling an icy pi symbol. The lower image, from the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8, shows the same area in 2023, after the tributaries had narrowed their fronts and retreated, taking a large “bite” out of the pi.
Notice the long brown lines running along the length of Sortebræ, which means “black glacier” in Danish. These are lateral and medial moraines—piles of rock and sediment deposited on the edges of the glacier or where the tributaries met. Normally, medial moraine lines follow the path of the glacier; but surging glaciers intermittently flow so quickly that they can form striking bends and kinks called looped, or sometimes bulging, moraines.
“Over time, these moraines got dragged down the glacier to form the characteristic tear-shaped moraine loops visible in the image,” said Hester Jiskoot, a glaciologist at the University of Lethbridge. Another telltale sign that this is a surge-type glacier is the pitted “Swiss cheese” surface visible in the 1986 image, a pitted pattern caused by the filling and draining of small lakes or the closing of crevasses on the glacier surface, she added.
The main branch of Sortebrae surged forward between 1992 and 1995. During this period, the glacier’s front advanced by 10 kilometers (6 miles), and the speed of its flow increased to a maximum of over 20 meters (65 feet) per day. But the advance proved to be short-lived. When the surge ended, the main trunk began losing mass and the glacier front retreated rapidly. “Over the last 20 years, Sortebræ has lost about 40 square kilometers of ice,” Jiskoot said.
Sortebræ is part of a broader cluster of some 130 surging glaciers in this part of eastern Greenland. “While climate change is having a big impact on the rate of glacier retreat in this region, it’s perfectly normal for surge-type glaciers to retreat during their quiescent phase as they build up ice for the next surge,” said Harold Lovell, a glaciologist at the University of Portsmouth. “But surge-type glaciers only occur within certain climate parameters, and we think the magnitude of the retreat is likely enhanced by climate change.”
A 2023 analysis conducted by Lovell and colleagues reviewed decades of Landsat images and tallied 274 surging glaciers in Greenland overall. While the number of surging glaciers in this part of eastern Greenland stayed roughly the same between 1985 and 2019, the analysis showed a reduction in surging activity among glaciers in West Greenland, possibly due to rising summer air temperatures.
“In West Greenland, we’re seeing that some smaller land-terminating glaciers that we know have surged in the past have been unable to surge again,” Lovell said, “likely because they have thinned too much in a warming climate.”

So @antique-forvalaka you tagged me like over a month ago but here I am oly now lmaoo. Sadly no danmei wips for ya esp. bc i’m still on a writer’s block and busy, but I did have a rush of hannigram post-fall ideas recently and wrote down a rough wip so here’s a snippet:
Hannibal coughed out sea water and took a few stertorous breaths, the air almost refusing to go through his tightly clenched throat.
Having crawled on the rocky shore, he ripped a part of his shirt and wrapped it tightly around his stomach to keep his wound from losing even more blood. Doing so, he turned towards a body he dragged after him with great difficulty. He observed the man’s chest, an unknown feeling of anxiety rising steadily in tides.
Will was not breathing.
Rest assured, eventually:
Time melted together and everything around went quiet, as if the whole world compressed into just this tiny cold space in the middle of the night with the two of them.
“Come on, Will, don’t leave me now,” his raspy voice squeezed out before he inhaled once again and blew the air into the man’s mouth. Just before he leaned in for the second one, water sprayed on his face among a series of coughs.

Tides of Water: Prologue
Pairing: Childe x fem!Reader
Summary: The young pair was inseparable since little days, always seen tied together. But with the beginning of high school, the two went their own ways and forgot about their childhood’s fairytale. Or so Name thought. Born into the ones of the richest families in Teyvat, Name and Childe were bound to happen one way or another, and once the marriage between them came knocking on the door, they were brought back together. However, neither of the two were the same people they used to be, and both learnt that since the very beginning of their shared life.

“Have you ever thought of what your future would look like?” You winced at the sudden break of the soothing silence between you both. The strands of his ginger hair tickled your nose as you turned to him, only to see him staring at the flickering stars above you. His ocean eyes were focused on the sight, blinking too many times while you questioned where he pulled the question from. You were too young to have such conversations, merely tackling into the beginnings of middle school, yet he never failed to amuse you with unexpected topics.
But that was Childe for you; never afraid to speak his mind.
“Not really,” you mumbled, averting your gaze back to the night sky. “Papa probably has things planned for me, so there is nothing for me to think about, I guess.” Some part of you knew that was the case. Ever since you were able to talk, he has had a strict approach to raising you. Learning at least two languages, excelling in chess and mathematics, making sure you read a few books a week. The list went on as you grew older, making you a female copy of your father. You didn’t have many toys to play with or friends to hang out with, although your mother took it upon herself to cheat the system every once in a while. Was it to brush your hair after a bath, read you fairy tales before bed, or sneak a plush or two without your father noticing, she made sure you knew what it felt like being taken care of outside the stern routine you had.
After all, she was the one who introduced you to your best friend and his family, and that was something you always silently thanked her for.
Childe was the complete opposite of you; his parents let him shape himself in the way he wanted to. Being the youngest at the time gave him the freedom of getting extra spoiled, almost carefree, yet he ended up as someone every parent would like their child to be.
He was someone you wanted to be but knew you couldn't.
The only reason your father allowed your friendship to bloom was Childe’s father himself. Being best friends since their high school days, the two were inseparable. Although two polar opposites, they seemed more like brothers than anything else. For sure, your mother encouraged you to spend time with Childe in the first place, but your father never said a word after seeing you together.
“That’s so lame, Name.” His teasing voice made you frown. “You should have a secret hobby. Don’t be the boring one.” Even though you knew there was no ill intention behind his words, you still pinched his side, drawing a dramatic squeak from his mouth. Rolling your eyes, you puffed the air you held out and pouted at him. His eyes never left the scenery above, but you noticed a tiny smirk forming at the corner of his right lip.
Ajax ‘Childe’ Tartaglia was a menace who you were proud to call your best friend.
“You know how they are, stupid. ‘Can't do much about it.” You loved your parents equally for everything they were doing for you. So, it was only natural to accept what they planned for you without any second thoughts.
“Well,” he exclaimed, abruptly turning around to face you. Childe’s tiny head was too close to you, his hair tickling your nose, with a big smile plastered on his cute face. “At least you’ll have me in your future! Promise I’m not going anywhere.”
His eyes closed, the smile only growing wider. Your heart fluttered at the scene. It skipped a few beats hearing his words. He would always be by your side. He would be the ray of sunshine in your pre-planned life. He would always be your Ajax.
As you returned the smile to him, he ruffled through your loose hair, lying back down on the shared blanket. Emitting the warmth in the already warm sunroom, he pressed himself closer to your tiny body, fingers searching for yours. You quickly glanced at your small hands, letting him intertwine them together. There was that soothing silence between you once again. Shortly lived as Childe quickly started rambling about his own plans and wishes, never once forgetting to mention where were you in that story. You were happy.
He made you happy.
Little that you knew back then your life would turn around 180 sooner than you thought.
It hurt to face him. It hurt to let those words out of your throat. It hurt to hurt him.
You knew about your departure overseas before the middle school graduation, but you couldn’t bring yourself to say anything to him earlier. It pained you enough already, and you knew how much it would do the same to him. But you had to; you just decided to wait until the very last moment.
Childe grew out to be a teasing gentleman. He could have spun everything around his finger without blinking once, yet showed major respect when needed. You were proud of him, more than you were of yourself. There was still shape that had to be done about him, he was only 15, but you knew he would be a sly charmer.
Without you by his side.
Both of you quietly stood at the frozen fountain inside your garden, your favorite place to chase each other since little days. His already tall figure loomed over you, but his eyes avoided meeting yours, no usual shine inside them. You knew you had broken him, how could you not? His best friend, his better half, was leaving him for however how long. The moment you shared with him right there and then was the last one, but you couldn’t even make him smile, make it easier for him.
“Why didn't you say something earlier?” Childe’s voice was detached; no one would understand how hard he was trying not to let it crack. None but you. With each lip bite, another blade pierced your heart with sorrow. It felt like the air had thinned out, making it impossible to breathe. You wished he looked at you, and saw the guilt hoarded inside your irises. But there was nothing instead. Only the sound of him breathing incoherently and clenched jaw.
“I…” Your voice gave up on you, yet you had to find it in yourself to end the already one-sided conversation. “I was scared.” Was that really enough? Deep inside, you knew it's not, it wasn't a good reason. As honest as it was, it couldn’t give him the fair closure he deserved.
Maybe you should have said something earlier. Maybe it would have hurt both of you less if he knew sooner. But it was too late already. It was too late even if it was sooner.
You were leaving and it couldn’t be stopped. Childe knew that, cursing everything and everyone that kept it hidden away from him. But he never said it out loud. Shoving it deep inside his brain, he didn’t say a word. He didn’t blame you. He couldn’t blame you. After all, your life was decided before you knew it. The only wish he had was more time. More time to hold you in his arms. More time to tell you how he really felt.
More time to confess his love to you.
Instead, he leaned down his forehead onto yours, his cold skin absorbing the warmth out of you. And he just breathed, eyes closed, mouth sealed in a straight line. You hitched at his movement, pleading your heart to stop racing so fast and loud, but touched his nose with yours as your eyes stayed glued to his stoic face.
“Don't forget me,” he whispered, wishing it more to himself than anything else. Your heart broke in half as he finally opened his eyes, the oceans turning into a midnight sky from the sadness that consumed them. Tears finally escaped and rolled down your face uncontrollably as you pulled him into a tight hug. Wrinkling your coat, he tugged you closer, just to feel you next to him one last time. Until you meet again.
“Never.” You thought that was a promise you would never break. It was easy, you couldn’t forget about him. He promised he would stay by your side forever, no matter what happens.
Yet, some twisted part of your fate had different plans for you, and Childe became nothing but a faded memory after 10 years of you leaving him alone in that garden.
With each passing year, he roamed your mind less and less, until you found yourself never thinking of him again. Memories you two made together were nothing more than a smudge you couldn't restore. Nor did you try to in the end. You focused on yourself and your career, making sure your parents had a reason to boast about their daughter being the next successor to numerous hotels around the country. It was the only way for you; to listen and obey what was expected of you.
You owed them that much. You owed them your whole life for being where you were, satisfied with the lush life you lived.
And you had to agree with anything they still had in preparation for you once you step through their doors again.

21 Years of Amazing Earth Imagery
On April 29, 1999, NASA Earth Observatory started delivering science stories and imagery to the public through the Internet. Today, we turn 21! So much has changed in the past two decades...

One of the most notable changes is the way we view our home planet. Check out some of the beautiful imagery of our planet over the past 21 years.
2000: Pine Island Glacier
Most people will never see Pine Island Glacier in person. Located near the base of the Antarctic Peninsula—the “thumb” of the continent—the glacier lies more than 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) from the tip of South America. That’s shorter than a cross-country flight from New York to Los Angeles, but there are no runways on the glacier and no infrastructure. Only a handful of scientists have ever set foot on its ice.
This animation shows a wide view of Pine Island Glacier and the long-term retreat of its ice front. Images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on our Terra satellite from 2000 to 2019. Notice that there are times when the front appears to stay in the same place or even advance, though the overall trend is toward retreat. Read more.
2002: The Blue Marble
In February 2002, Earth Observatory published this “blue marble” image based on the most detailed collection of true-color imagery of the entire Earth at that time. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet. Most of the information contained in this image came from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), illustrating the instrument's outstanding capacity to act as an integrated tool for observing a variety of terrestrial, oceanic and atmospheric features of the Earth. 2009: Tsauchab River Bed
The Tsauchab River is a famous landmark for the people of Namibia and tourists. Yet few people have ever seen the river flowing with water. In December 2009, an astronaut on the International Space Station caught this glimpse of the Tsauchab River bed jutting into the sea of red dunes. It ends in a series of light-colored, silty mud holes on the dry lake floor.
Like several other rivers around the Namib Desert, the Tsauchab brings sediment down from the hinterland toward the coastal lowland. This sediment is then blown from the river beds, and over tens of millions of years it has accumulated as the red dunes of the Namib Sand Sea. Read more.
2012: Manning Island and Foxe Basin, Canada
Although it may look like a microscope’s view of a thin slice of mineral-speckled rock, this image was actually acquired in space by the Earth Observing-1 satellite in July 2012. It shows a small set of islands and a rich mixture of ice in Foxe Basin, the shallow northern reaches of Hudson Bay.
The small and diverse sizes of the ice floes indicate that they were melting. The darkest colors in the image are open water. Snow-free ice appears gray, while snow-covered ice appears white. The small, dark features on many of the floes are likely melt ponds. Read more.
2013: A Lava Lamp Look at the Atlantic
Stretching from tropical Florida to the doorstep of Europe, this river of water carries a lot of heat, salt, and history. The Gulf Stream is an important part of the global ocean conveyor belt that moves water and heat across the North Atlantic from the equator toward the poles. It is one of the strongest currents on Earth, and one of the most studied.
This image shows a small portion of the Gulf Stream as it appears in infrared imagery. Data for this image was acquired on April 9, 2013, by the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on the Landsat 8 satellite. TIRS observes in wavelengths of 10.9 micrometers and 12.0 micrometers. The image above is centered at 33.06° North latitude, 73.86° West longitude, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) east of Charleston, South Carolina. Read more.
2016: Curious Ensemble of Wonderful Features
When John Wesley Powell explored the Colorado River in 1869, he made the first thorough survey of one of the last blank spots on the map. The expedition began in May at Green River, Wyoming, and ended three months later at the confluence of the Colorado and Virgin Rivers in present-day Nevada.
About two months into their journey, the nine men of the expedition found themselves in Glen Canyon. As the men traveled along the serpentine river channel, they encountered what Powell later described in Canyons of Colorado as a “curious ensemble of wonderful features.”
From above, the view of Glen Canyon is equally arresting. In 2016, an astronaut aboard the International Space Station took several photographs that were combined to make a long mosaic. The water has an unnatural shade of blue because of sunglint, an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight reflects off the surface of water at the same angle that a camera views it. 2019: Lena Delta Shakes Off Water
For most of the year, the Lena River Delta—a vast wetland fanning out from northeast Siberia into the Arctic Ocean—is either frozen over and barren or thawed out and lush. Only briefly will you see it like this.
After seven months encased in snow and ice, the delta emerges for the short Arctic summer. The transition happens fast. The animation above, composed of images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on our Aqua satellite, shows the transformation from June 3-10, 2019. Read more.
2020: Making Waves in the Andaman Sea
When tides, currents and gravity move water masses over seafloor features, they can create wave actions within the ocean. Oceanographers began studying these internal waves from ships in the 1960s, and the modern era of satellites has made it possible to see them on a grand scale. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured these images of the Andaman Sea on November 29, 2019. The reflection of the Sun on the ocean—sunglint—helps make the internal waves visible.
Internal waves form because the ocean is layered. Deep water tends to be colder, denser and saltier, while shallower water is often warmer, lighter and fresher. The differences in density and salinity cause layers of the ocean to behave like different fluids. When tides, currents, gravity and Earth’s rotation move these different water masses over seafloor formations (such as ridges or canyons), they create waves within the sea. Read more.

Catatan Lingkungan
Saat mengembangkan ladang minyak Rang Don dan ladang gas Helang, NOEX, bagian dari Nippon Oil Corporation, juga menyusun AMDAL, yang berfungsi untuk membantu manajemen dalam merencanakan kebijakan strategis, sehingga dampak negatif dari kegiatan eksploitasi ini terhadap lingkungan sekitar dapat diminimalisir.
Pada tahun 2005, Nippon Oil dan Ebara-Ballard mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan memulai pengujian lapangan terhadap sistem sel bahan bakar membran pertukaran proton rumah tangga 1 kW yang menggunakan minyak batu bara sebagai bahan bakarnya. Pengujian ini merupakan pengujian rumah tangga pertama di dunia terhadap sistem tersebut. Sistem tersebut pun berhasil mencatatkan efisiensi pembangkitan tenaga yang lebih besar daripada pemanasan normal. Sistem ini bahkan dapat beroperasi pada temperatur serendah -10 °C.

Ok then! The second for the challenge. ^-^ This is probably one of the stories that means the most to me. Just, like... in general, really. o.o It’s an idea for a story I’ve had for a while. I did have a really rough draft of this, so I thought ‘hey! that kinda matches the prompt! I should actually write that out like I’ve been meaning to!’ so... I did. I would have made this one the first I did for the challenge, but I didn’t have it finished yesterday, so. o.o
Description: Through thick and thin, through good and bad. Two becomes three, three becomes four. Amidst the setting sun and the lapping waves, will their feelings be unveiled to one another, truly and fully.
Warning: there’s a very brief allusion to suicide during this story, as well as death in general. If you’re uncomfortable with these things for any reason, I would advise caution.

The crash of the water was the only thing that Amandine seemed to keep her eyes on. Amidst the idle chatter from the others, drowned out by the sounds of the waves. Every ounce of focus, settled onto the tide as it went back and forth, back and forth.
She never liked going to the beach. The seaweed, the creatures, the uncertainty of the water… yet here she was, on a beach, friends at her side, all watching the sun set on what had been a frankly fantastic day.
Save for one last thing that she had to tell them.
“If you keep looking at the water like that, you’re literally gonna boil the entire beach, Mandi.” Aurora’s easy grin was easy to see from the corner of her eye. Nestled into a beach chair as she was, almost buried in several towels that nearly covered her eyes. (For some reason, a sight not unlike Oliver’s habit of huddling into every single blanket in their house. Perhaps it was just a shared sibling habit.)
From beside her chair, Oliver leaned forward by a hint. Looking between Amandine and Aurora, then glancing towards Miyuki— only drawn back to conversation by Aurora’s remark, no doubt— until Oliver finally smiled.
“That’s the thinking face,” he said in a matter-of-fact tone. Amandine let out a bare scoff at the words and crossed her arms a little tighter over her torso.
“I have no thinking face, thank you very much.”
“No, you really do. You make that face when you read books sometimes.”
Whatever reason the words had to make Aurora laugh were unknowable. That was, at least, until she whispered, “Does that mean that Amandine doesn’t actually think at all? Crazy. Just… an empty head, nothing in there in the slightest. No thoughts.”
Amandine turned back towards the sight of the water, eyes closing just long enough to convey the slowly withering patience she’d arrived with. Her greatest adversary— Aurora’s ability to drive any single person in Eorzea insane. Save Oliver, perhaps.
Though it was an unfair comparison. He had patience rivalling that of the Twelve to begin with.
...Likely from being her sibling, though Amandine never thought to ask.
“You just described your own head perfectly, Aurora.” Miyuki took the chance that Amandine hadn’t. Despite herself, she let out a snicker. From the side, she heard Oliver let out a soft sigh, and Aurora laugh again.
“Come on! That’s not fair. I thought we already established: I just have a very, very small moogle in my head, and they’re the one controlling everything.”
“Ok, guys, slow down for a minute. I’m pretty sure Amandine wanted to say something before,” Oliver said as Amandine finally reopened her eyes. The sky’s orange tips were slowly beginning to take on a deeper tinge. “That’s what the thinking face usually gets followed with. Some sort of words, or just a long sip of coffee.”
“If I had the coffee, it would be both, I assure you,” she replied with another long breath. Her shoulders raised with the inhale, dropping slowly as she let out a heavy sigh. “While I may come to regret the words I’m about to say— in fact, I am almost positive I will—…” another moment of pause, another breath, and… “I would like to say… thank you. All of you.”
It was about the reactions she’d assumed. Oliver’s smile wavered briefly as he tilted his head, and Aurora stared at her with a scrunched face and one hand pointed out towards her in question. Miyuki shrugged, nodded, and went back to watching the ocean, only taking a side-glance at her every so often.
Aurora’s scrunched stare continued for another few moments before she spoke up, looking around the beach. “I don’t think we… did anything? Unless slowly driving you to the brink of madness is what you’re thanking us for. In which case… ya, you’re totally welcome.” She offered a wide grin and a thumbs-up. “Always happy to help.”
“Not… necessarily, no,” Amandine answered. She didn’t deny it. Denying that was practically ignoring half of their friendship to begin with. “What I am thanking you for is crashing— quite literally, in fact— into my life.”
“...wait, what?”
Oliver’s face, somehow, met his palm. Inexplicably, of course. “I thought we were over that…”
Miyuki raised an eyebrow. “I don’t even want to begin to know. So this is me, not asking.” He went to turn away, only to stop as Aurora put a hand on his arm and grinned. He looked up with a slow stare. “You’re going to tell me anyways.” It wasn’t posed as a question.
“Oliver crashed into Mandi the first time we met in Ishgard. Literally, he just…” she trailed off, putting up her arms until one stood far taller than the other. The shorter of her positioned arms crashed into the other, and they both flopped onto the beach chair. “You should’ve seen him. He was so embarrassed.”
“Amandine’s being sentimental, guys, stop spoiling the moment.” Oliver made a valiant effort in pretending his face wasn’t starting to go bright red. It was failing miserably, yet the effort was present and obvious.
The fact that Amandine could feel herself smiling at their antics was both terrifying and quite routine. Not even Halone could save her soul at this point, she feared. It was lost, gone amidst the pleasant memories.
Not that she wanted it back, anyways. Not if it meant losing them, frustrating as they could be.
“I suppose the silence is my queue to continue, then. Ahem.” While the words weren’t exactly there anymore, she supposed it would be unfair to leave them at such a cliffhanger. She took another deep breath, gathered her wits, and spoke, “For as much as we tend to joke, and pretend that your company is infuriating to me— which, at times, it certainly is—” Oliver and Aurora chuckled at that. Miyuki tried not to, yet even he couldn’t manage a straight face— “The three of you are some of my most precious friends. You have changed my life in ways that I wouldn’t have thought possible, and forced me to confront many, many things in the world and about myself that I otherwise wouldn’t have acknowledged, much less changed.
“Regardless of the circumstances that saw us truly come together— a tragic death of a dear friend, a mutual need for revenge, a certain someone pointing a gun at Aurora’s head—” Once again, Miyuki tried and failed to keep from reacting as Aurora only let out a pronounced sigh— “Our friendship is something that I have and always will treasure. I dare not think of my life without you, for that is a life I could not desire any less.”
Silence took over as her words settled into the air. It took all of a few moments for her to carefully wipe the side of her eye, before settling back into her chair as she had been a few minutes prior.
Aurora dipped her head into the pile of towels. When she emerged, her eyes seemed to be a hint glassy. “Aw, c’mon, Mandi…” she took a half-moment to sniff, “...you’re gonna make Oliver cry.”
Miyuki snorted. “And not yourself. Obviously.”
“I was getting to that, thanks,” she snapped back with a wave of dismissal. Miyuki only grinned at the amusement in her face, and settled back into his chair. There was a soft ‘sure, you were’ that she ignored as he did, and then a smile. “And me, too. For the crying thing. Happy now, ‘Yuki?”
“I would be if you stopped calling me that.”
From beside Amandine’s chair, there was a soft sniff. Oliver moved his hand away from his eyes rather quickly, brushing off a part of hair that had fallen into his face— or so it seemed, at least. “I would try and disagree, but… I can’t. It means a lot to hear that, Amandine. Really.
“And… I’d like to agree! I’m glad that I met you, too. And Miyuki. Even if we got off on the wrong foot in the beginning,” he added with a shift forward to look towards Miyuki. “...The… really, really wrong foot. I still feel a little bad about it, sometimes, honestly.”
His answer was a simple roll of the shoulder. “I threatened to kill your sister.” He sent one half of a glance towards Aurora. She had a sudden interest in her chair, yet the sheepish smile was unmistakable. “The ‘wrong foot’ was warranted.”
“Can we just acknowledge that Oliver didn’t even mention me in that?” Aurora spoke up. Interest in the chair had passed alongside the mentions of her very intimate meeting with the muzzle of Miyuki’s gun, clearly. She shifted forwards on her chair, pouted, and said, “Like, I’m feeling a little betrayed. You almost kill him over killing me, but you aren’t even happy to know me? That’s just cold, Oli.”
The long-suffering stare he gave her was muted in the midst of the teasing wink she gave. Oliver let out a short laugh and shrugged, one hand going to his hair once more as he fell entirely silent. His words, when next he spoke, seemed far too quiet for the easy air about the group. “Of course I’m glad to have met you, Rory.” The look in his eye was enough to make Amandine glance away. “To be entirely honest, I… don’t think I’d actually be here, if I hadn’t. And I don’t just mean the beach, either.”
Whatever it was in the look they shared, it was enough to drive Aurora to tears once more. Her head dropped near immediately, one hand shielding her eyes away from a brief moment. The tears still fell, visible, vanishing into the towel and followed by more. Then, without another word, she got up from the collection of them, moved over to Oliver’s chair, and caught him in a hug.
There were a few moments of quiet as the two of them stayed there, before Aurora finally ruffled his hair and moved back to her chair. As she settled down, she let out a hard sigh. “...Oliver’s not allowed to make sentimental remarks anymore. It’s officially illegal.
“...and neither is Amandine, actually.” Aurora’s still teary-eyed stare shifted towards her for a moment, only causing one raise of the brow by Amandine. “For the sake of me not embarrassing myself.”
As Oliver only brushed his hair back into a place where it wasn’t bothering his slightly glassy eyes, it was Miyuki that spoke up with a sly grin. “Well, if they can’t, then I will.”
The three of them blinked at him. Shoulders shifted, small quirks of the brow in surprise. Aurora almost tilted her head entirely, though the surprise in her face was pleasant. Rare was it that he spoke more than 11 words in a single go— actually speaking of his feelings was unheard of in the months they’d known him.
He took a long breath. Shoulders raising slowly with the intake of air, dropping again with a low, controlled sigh. “The last few months I’ve spent with you have been the happiest I’ve felt in years, unfortunately. You are all headache inducing. Infuriating. The Kami themselves would balk at your collective antics. And I’m glad to be a part of them.” Miyuki’s smile was almost tentative, yet the good-natured malice was not. “You aren’t worth the trouble that you are, but I’m still glad that I put that gun to Aurora’s head. And I would do it again.”
“Oh, gee, thanks. I’m really feelin’ the love, ‘Yuki.”
“I’m going to do it now if you call me that again.”
Aurora only rolled her eyes and stuck out her tongue at him. Miyuki facepalmed and muttered something along the lines of regret. Amandine cleared her throat, “While I doubt Oliver appreciates the latter sentiment much, it’s rather reassuring to hear that you value our company as much as we value yours.”
She looked up again in genuine betrayal. “W— he wasn’t even the one who nearly got killed th— if this is your way of saying I’m third-wheeling here, Mandi, it’s not much appreciated!”
“You’re far too hard to ignore in such a way, my dear,” Amandine replied with a laugh. Oliver joined Miyuki in facepalming. She only laughed more. “Regardless. I know you, Aurora, and I know for a fact that you’re likely not offended by his words.”
At that, all Aurora could offer was a shrug. “I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just saying, y’know… I don’t have to be happy that you’re right.”
“It was really sweet there for a few minutes,” Oliver murmured into his hand, eyes focused on the waves in the sun-shaded distance, “Really. Then it just… wasn’t.”
“What, were you really expecting any different from us, of all people?” Aurora let out a short tsk, “That’s your mistake, Oli.”
A round of laughter from them all shook away the last remnants of the emotional moment that had been. Though, before it drifted back to the comfortable lull in conversation, Miyuki turned his attention to Aurora again.
First, it was a look between he, Amandine, and Oliver. Then a quick push-up of his glasses. And finally, he said in a far too conspiratory tone, “We’ve said our pieces. It’s your turn. Make your brother cry again.”
“Hey— hold on, this is just a spontaneous thing!” Despite nearly jumbling the words, it seemed that she managed to get them across. Aurora shot a wide-eyed look about the area, “You can’t just make me talk about my feelings. I did not sign up to have a heart-warming friendship-is-everything moment today.”
Amandine stifled a laugh. “Heartwarning,” she echoed with another, shorter chuckle. “Yes, the tears in my eyes as Miyuki called us infuriating. Truly, my heart could hardly take more of this outspill of affection.”
“To be fair, that’s like… the most emotionally open he’s been with us since we met.”
Miyuki scoffed. “Hardly.”
From the loud sigh coming from Oliver’s chair, he was reminiscing about the true heartwarming parts of the conversation again. Or, at least, the parts that hadn’t yet devolved. Eyes still set out at the paint-spilled sky, and the faint view of the stars that came into view.
“Look. I’m terrible with words! I dunno what to say!” Aurora waved her hands about as if gesturing wildly to a mess on the floor. The frazzled look she’d given them complimented it well, yet their silence seemed to be enough to make her give up. “Seriously. Can I make a script really quick, if you really want me to do this?”
“Buckle to peer pressure without one.” Miyuki seemed unphased by the deadpan stare she offered him. “Stop being a coward.”
Oliver finally turned back into the conversation, shifting entirely in his chair until he sat at the very front of it. Head in his hands, crossed over his legs and expectant. “Only do it if you want to, Rory.”
“Well, now I have to, anyways. I’m buckling to peer pressure. You guys suck.”
Amandine tucked in her legs beneath her, head pulling forward to rest on her knees. “Halone grant me patience,” she muttered, and then pulled back up into a comfortable position.
“Ok. Uh… gods, I… ok. I’m gonna do it. Just so you guys don’t bug me about this some other time.” Aurora scrunched her eyes closed for a few moments, one hand closing into a fist at her side. Both her eyes and the fist opened at the same time, like an idea struck in her mind. “I dunno how to start this. So… you guys are my best friends.
“...I guess that’s sort of obvious. But, seriously, you just mean the world to me. We’ve been together through good times, and bad times. At our worst, best, and…” she trailed off with a look at Miyuki. “Most intent on causing me bodily harm-times.” He could hardly hold back the snicker. “Literally none of us got off on the right foot in the beginning. We all kind of hated each other at some point of time since meeting.
“Which is just weird, but it’s a concern for later, maybe. What’s important is that I would do anything for you guys. Like, you mean so much to me. And I’m so happy that I get to call you guys my friends. Sometimes I just kinda think about it, and I’m like, “wow, they’re so cool. I can’t believe these people are my friends.” It’s crazy. And what’s even weirder, is that I feel like I’ve known you all my life, and even longer than that. And I haven’t. Not even Oliver.”
Despite how he looked away, his feelings at the words were evident enough.
“I just… I love you guys. I really do. So, y’know… if we ever go our separate ways, someday… just know that you can count on me. There’s nothing in this world, or the next, or the next after that that’d keep me from being there for you. You’re all stuck with my friendship, whether you want it or not. And I’m really good at keeping my promises.”
No one said a single word when she drifted off to silence.
Not even the crashing waves, so faded into the background of their conversation as it was, seemed to break into the impenetrable quiet that had been crafted after Aurora’s final words.
No muscles moved, not even a hint of a breath, just the evening sky and the new, thickened moment of peace.
Unbroken.
Until, at least, Aurora took in a shaky breath. “...please say something. I feel really awkward and I have no idea what to say. I just kinda… went with it, there.”
It seemed as thought it was Oliver’s turn to deliver a hug. He got up, sat next to Aurora, and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “That was really sweet, Rory.”
“Indeed,” Amandine nodded her approval alongside her words. Her smile was light, yet still filled with the same sort of feeling as it had been during her own small speech. “It was lovely.”
“Thank the gods. I was kinda freaking out on if it came out superficial or something.”
Miyuki whistled. “If that was superficial, then I’d rather not know what the genuine looks like.”
“It’s not actually words at that point. I just cry on the spot and point at you,” Aurora replied with a laugh. There was a brief attempt to showcase it, a downward pulled imitation of a cry and her pointing at the three of them wildly.
Slowly, the conversation drifted back to its normal state between madness and seriousness. The heart-to-heart ended, emotions laid bare for friends to see. Amandine’s attention was pulled back into the setting sky, watching as the stripes of blue became more and more pronounced to quash the rest of the evening’s color.
There, as she had done so many times before, Amandine heard the familiar voice of long-departed friend.
Look after them for me, won’t you? A promise made of her, in the darkest hour that she’d known in many long years.
She knew. She knew this time would come. She must have. Their band grew from three to four, and they never needed someone to guide them, or hold their hands. They never did.
Yet that promise kept Amandine there, right alongside them. Kept them all together. Kept her close. It was never balance, nor sagely guidance. It never was. Simply, it was what they needed, in the end— Amandine, Aurora, Oliver, and eventually MIyuki. It was the incredible good that had come from those dying words.
It was clear. There was one last person she had yet to thank.
I pray that you rest easy, Sydessin, and know the good you created. From your final promise, you gave me far more than I had once thought.
And for that, I will be ever grateful.

An Outpost for Evolution at Aldabra Atoll
Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean is one of the largest raised coral reefs in the world. This atoll, consisting of coral islands ringing a shallow lagoon, is known for the hundreds of endemic species—including the Aldabra giant tortoise—that live there. According to UNESCO, Aldabra contains “one of the most important natural habitats for studying evolutionary and ecological processes.”
Located more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of Madagascar and more than 600 kilometers (375 miles) east of mainland Africa, Aldabra is one of the coralline outer islands of the Seychelles. The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image of the remote atoll on June 24, 2022. Tides flow in and out of the lagoon through channels between the large perimeter islands. The land tops out at a mere 8 meters (26 feet) above sea level.
Due to the islands’ isolated location, rough terrain, and scarcity of fresh water, the human footprint on the atoll is relatively small. A research station on West Island (also called Picard Island) has operated since 1971, but tourism is limited and carefully controlled. Aldabra Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and a Ramsar site in 2009.
Though the atoll may be remote and rugged, it is not desolate. It contains a variety of habitats that have spurred the evolution of specially suited flora and fauna. The atoll’s varied habitats support many species, including the largest breeding population of frigatebirds in the Indian Ocean and one of only two oceanic flamingo populations in the world.
In one remarkable case, a bird species on Aldabra evolved to be flightless—twice. The islands have been completely underwater at least once in their history when global mean sea level was higher, wiping out all life on the atoll. The fossil record contains evidence of a flightless rail (a bird in the same family as coots and crakes) before the last submergence, and of a flying white-throated rail that evolved to live on the ground after the islands reemerged. With the lack of terrestrial predators and an abundance of food, the bird thrived without the ability to fly.
Seven different types of wetlands, including shallow marine waters and seagrass beds, exist at Aldabra. Mangrove forests line much of the lagoon-facing sides of the large islands. They provide nesting sites for wading birds, as well as feeding grounds for turtles, sharks, and other marine species.
On land, the mostly herbivorous Aldabra giant tortoise (above) sits atop the terrestrial food chain. The population of this social tortoise species is estimated to exceed 100,000. Males can weigh up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds) and measure 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length.
In 2018, a small group of Aldabra giant tortoises was reintroduced to neighboring Madagascar, where no giant tortoises had lived for 600 years due to overhunting. Ecologists believe the lumbering creatures could promote forest regeneration on cattle-grazed land by distributing seeds through their dung. They may also suppress fire risk by feeding on grasses and dry leaves.

Disney+ New Releases: September 2021

Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.
Star Wars: Visions is set to premiere all seven installments on Wednesday, September 22. This project is a collection of 7 animated short films all from renowned Japanese studios. As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.
While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D. and will follow Hawaiian teenage doctor Dr. Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha.
The library titles coming to Disney+ in September aren’t too inspiring. But kudos to Disney from not hiding from the fact that Dark Phoenix will be arriving on September 3. Prepare yourselves accordingly.

Spring Color in the North Sea
The increasing sunlight and warmth of springtime provoke buds and blooms amidst the trees, flowers, and grasses on land. Warm air and sunlight also beget warmer ocean waters and provoke blooms of the “grass of the sea”—phytoplankton. These tiny, plant-like organisms float near the ocean surface and turn sunlight and carbon dioxide into sugars and oxygen. In turn, they become food for the grazing zooplankton, shellfish, and finfish of the sea.
On May 5, 2018, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired a natural-color image (top) of a phytoplankton bloom in the North Sea. The next day, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA’s Aqua satellite observed the same bloom in a wider context. Five days earlier, MODIS detected visible plumes of sediment moving through the area to the west.
The milkier, lighter-colored waters are probably filled with coccolithophores, while greener areas may be diatoms. (It is impossible to know for sure without direct water samples.) The brightness of the color may reflect the density of the phytoplankton, while the various swirls and shapes trace the intricate movements of currents, eddies, and tides.
Phytoplankton are most abundant in the North Sea in late spring and early summer due to high levels of nutrients in the water. Melting sea ice and increased runoff from European rivers—a product of melting snow and spring rains—carry a heavy load of nutrients out to sea, while also freshening the surface waters. Intense seasonal winds blowing over the relatively shallow sea also cause a lot of mixing that brings nutrients to the surface.
In a study published in August 2017, a research team from the United Kingdom found that primary production in the North Sea has declined since the late 1980s. The causes for less phytoplankton abundance are not entirely clear, but they appear to be related to decreased nutrients—thanks to less runoff from European farms and cities—increasing sea temperatures, and changing light levels. Whatever the cause, the decrease in primary production has coincided with a decrease in zooplankton and some higher forms of marine life that consume phytoplankton. At the same time, many fish stocks remained stable, probably due to better fisheries management amid the changing ocean conditions.
