I Worked Myself to Death and Reincarnated as the Queen of His Majesty, Who is Younger than Me! - By Ononata Manimani (8/10)
Tumblr media
I've had this on the back burner for a while. Yandere confirmed! This is a reincarnation story with some cuteness, some creepiness, ghosts and good art. It's a wacky story with alot of unexpected elements, like the ghost thing, which is a main plot point.
Emi is a painfully average office worker. She woke up sick then she went to work. She got sicker. She hasn't had a lover in 3 years, and she's not close to her family.
Tumblr media
Her death is kind of brutal. She gets a sharp pain in her head after days without getting treated. She works for a "black company" that will fire her if she dares to go to the doctor. She dies with nothing but regret, and when she awakens she sees a handsome man.
Tumblr media
It's her husband, King Theodore. Emi has been reincarnated into the body of Princess Emilia, Theodore's first wife. Emi crawls out of her coffin. Theodore picks her up, and he decides to use her. In this world reincarnated people are a sign of disaster. Emi will be burned to death by a mob if the truth comes out. She has to be a good wife or else...
Tumblr media
Wait...Emilia is still alive...kinda. Emi got the body, but the spirit of Emilia is floating around her. Ok, so what does this mean? Emilia's spirit is a side effect. It's what happens when a foreign spirit like Emi steals a body. Emilia could turn into an evil spirit, and bring forth calamity. Theodore wants to destroy her, but Emi befriends her instead.
Theodore isn't a very romantic guy. He's a practical, workaholic king. His reincarnated wife is interesting, so he lets her live...for now.
Tumblr media
Theodore softens up pretty fast, but he still isn't very romantic until like chapter 4. I wasn't sure if he was a yandere for a while. He's very childish around Emi. Emi is willing to be a good Queen in order to live a comfortable life, but that doesn't mean love is on the table. Emilia and Theodore were in a loveless marriage. Emi does not pursue Theodore. He eventually comes after her.
Tumblr media
Sidenote. Theodore is the strongest magician. He has a ton of scary powers, but he's overworked. He will die if he doesn't learn how to let his guard down. Emi is pretty nice, and she can also see that Theodore is an effective King. She doesn't want him to die, and she doesn't want Emilia to become an evil spirit.
Emilia becomes her best friend by the way. It's kinda weird, but cute...Emilia is a brat though. I roll my eyes when she rants about men and romance.
Tumblr media
There's a lot of culture shock in this. King Theodore rules over a polygamous kingdom. Emilia didn't have to be by his side. She actually wanted him to bring in another princess. Emi is more traditional. She never wants to fall for Theodore, because she doesn't want to share the one she loves.
(She is willing to be one of the queens and enjoy a wealthy life though lol...)
Tumblr media
Theodore proposes once more after he promises to be faithful.
Tumblr media
After the proposal Theodore becomes very jealous. He hates Emilia. He wants Emi to care about him. No one else. He even gets jealous when she compliments the servants.
Tumblr media
It's easy to see why Theodore is a yandere. Emi is his friend. Possibly the first friend he has ever had fun with. He is a work machine, but Emi is able to break down his barriers. She knows how bad overworking is, and her earnest attempts to help him are pretty cute. Theodore also isn't an overly toxic yandere... mostly...they are married...and he kind of has a point...
Emi makes up a ton of excuses, but Theodore thinks a loving royal marriage will bring happiness and prosperity to the whole country.
...he's absolutely right. Emilia was a total brat content to hide in her personal castle. Emi is a dutiful queen. A love match with her husband can only be a good thing...but sigh...ugh...Emi is insecure because her previous life sucked etc.
This is pretty complex for a reincarnation story, and the yandere isn't a boring cookie-cutter villain.

Recommendation: Yona of the dawn
I've decided on a new tradition, the first story i read this year will be given a review and ooh boy did Yona of the dawn gave me something to write about.
Tumblr media
The a story premise is quite simple at a glance. Yona was a sheltered and spoiled young princess who's ignorant towards the world outside the palace. She grew up adored by her father, the king and being protected by her bodyguard Hak, she spends most of her time fawning over her cousin and childhood friend Su-won. Yet on the eve of her 16th birthday her small world was crushed in pieces by a coup d'etat, driving her into hiding.
So let's talk about our main character, Yona. She started out as a ditzy, beautiful young princess who's main concern is clothing and taming her curly red hair. Yona's not exactly a bad character per say, but she just had a very narrow world view, oh and she has a crush on her cousin Su-won... Yeah, i mean it's a historical setting what did you expect. Her, Hak and Su-won were childhood friends, they did everything together, ate together, slept together, fought together which makes it devastating for Yona and Hak when they realized that Su-won betrayed them.
Tumblr media
One of the aspects that i really enjoyed was the realistic depiction of grief that Yona went through, like my girl was in a catatonic state when they first went on the run. Like girl was going through the five stages of grief for the first three volumes. And then came the hard truth that her dad was just, not a good ruler, he was a spineless coward who couldn't protect their nation. So on top of now having a bounty on her head, her father being dead she now has to grapple with the legacy her father left behind. And from those hard truths we see Yona growing up.
Tumblr media
As she continues her journey of growth she encounters the four 'dragon warriors' from the prophecy, which will be where the reverse harem tag comes in. Oh don't get me wrong i truly adore the cast from the bottom of my heart but I didn't enjoy the romance part very much. It's painstakingly obvious who the male lead is so having all these guys pining away at a hopeless cause makes me feel really bad for em. But besides that they are great characters, i especially like the yellow dragons backstory.
Tumblr media
Okay now let's talk about another character that totally captured my attention, Su-won. Su-won is like a guy you could out from game of thrones, like my guy is definitely a 'the outcome justifies the cost' kind of person you know what i'm saying? He knew that if Yona were to take throne as queen she would be an even worse ruler than her father, at least the version of her at the beginning of the story. Everything he did was in the name of the greater good, having no foreign allies he had to choice but to the choose the asassinantion route to the throne. Like yah he could've married Yona but that plan kinds went out the door when she saw him kill her dad. But like, he cares about Yona deeply, maybe not in the way that she would like but he does. But he will always put his country first. That's why he's such a striking character for me, he stands out from a sea of mediocre villains who's backstories are basically 'my family abused me and i'm obsessed with the heroine' that i see in alot otome isekais. Everyone are just pawns on a chessboard to him, even his loved ones and he's willing to sacrifice them all to gaurente the safety and stabilty of the kingdom.
So yeah, go read Yona of the dawn.
Signing off
Josephine

The Bad Ending of an Otome
From time to time I've expressed a desire to explain otome isekai's appeal to me through a pastiche of my favorite writing pieces from tumblr, the Scorpion and the Frog. I still have not followed through, despite the fact that it should be literally the easiest thing in the world - the Villainess and Her World. Frustrating.
Anywho, today's scorpion/frog meta regards the jealous hater replacement heiress of a beautiful but terminally ill child in a dating sim.
Tumblr media
The original game followed a girl who happened to look just like the now terminally dead Ophelia, who was previously alive and loved by all. The identical not-twin fills the Ophelia-shaped hole left in everyone's heart. The jealous hater replacement heiress (the villainess/frog, naturally) is quickly replaced and eventually killed for jealous hater maneuvers. Our main character (MC) of course reincarnates as the frog.
The first twist is a genre staple, could almost be considered the blueprint every story builds off of; rather than a specific, vindictive bitch... What if I was kind? What if I chose not to do anything that would make them want to kill me? What if I simply befriended the terminally ill Ophelia?
But like any good OI, the subversion takes it somewhere specific, someplace more personal. What if I befriended the terminally ill Ophelia...and still coveted everything she had? What if you're forced to realize it's actually pretty hard to not be a jealous hater when you're sitting side by side with someone effortlessly wealthier, prettier, more beloved than anything you'll ever experience? Especially when the beautiful dying Ophelia was honestly kind of a hateful bitch? And what if, despite all of this, you truly loved her? And that love didn't extinguish your overwhelming envy for what you could never have? This is an OI framing of what it's like to lose your best friend, the person no one else knew or loved like you did, to a slow, unstoppable terminal illness. It's a look at real friendship while harboring immense amounts of envy and hatred.
There's this tension with whether the MC really liked Ophelia, if she's saying "friend" or "love" out of habit rather than sincerity, whether Ophelia was just a bully using her wealth and power to manipulate someone she essentially owns, if her comment about dying with her are more about avoiding the the future or maybe placating a sick person, and nice little nuanced character things meant to keep you on your toes about the nature of their relationship. Area woman uncertain if she's being bullied or if this is girl bonding kind of stuff.
At times it would be logical to pity Ophelia, to despise her at others, even to take a certain amount of schadenfreude in this popular hot rich girl's pain. I liked the various ways the narrative muddied MC's perspective of Ophelia. She's an unpleasant, mean person that MC has to stick with whether she wants to or not.
Tumblr media
I loved Ophelia. A lot.
Now of course they don't let this girl look terminally ill - this is a princess comic after all - but lmaooo do they let her act it. Ophelia is *Bitter* that she has to die. *Terrified* of the inevitable. *Seething* over the expectation that she suffer through future agonizing symptoms just so her family can see her longer. *Furious* at these lovesick horny men courting her like they don't know her days are numbered. "Oh I worship you Ophelia, nobody's made me feel this way before, no woman will ever measure up to you" she knows they only like her cause she's hot. Ophelia is so hostile, so spite-filled, so fucking mad that not only does she have to die young, these people who claim to love her are - in both overt and subtle ways - pressuring her to take her imminent death gracefully, quietly, and above all else, beautifully. Foisting dignity on this teenager who's going into her casket kicking and screaming. If Ophelia had a tumblr she'd spend her time browsing vent tags and sending suicide bait.
Her character is so good, I was unfairly irritated by her in-game replacement who hadn't done anything yet. You really get where Ophelia's at times excessive hatred for the male love interests was coming from because like...wow. You're going full yandere eternal prisoner bad end for her...? This innocent good girl lamb who wants the best for everyone? No matter how similar they look, the fact that she offers a kind word and a helping hand would break any TRUE Ophelia stan's immersion instantly. She would never.
Anyway. Stories centered on the friendship between girls that aren't overly saccharine or stilted displays positivity are sadly uncommon, but they're my favorite. Like not to be aro on main but I think what others get out of tales of romance is how I respond to tales of deep friendship between women. Asobi Asobase, Binbougami Ga, Nichijou, Surviving Romance, they all fulfill some base desire that no one else seems to cherish as strongly😢
When we finally get confirmation, I have to admit. I stared at this page for like three minutes, eyes wet.
Tumblr media
Spoilers! She did love her. She loved her more than anyone.

Manhwa Rec: Concubine Walkthrough
Tumblr media
Remember when I made a whole post recommending a manhwa because no one else I knew read it so I could find someone to talk to about it? Well, we're back at it again a whole year later for me to tell y'all to go read Concubine Walkthrough. It's 128 chapters (with some bonus content) of pure excellence.
While on the surface looking like a typical otome isekai read of 'MC transmigrates into the body of a story's villainess', Concubine Walkthrough turns the genre on its head with its implementation of sci-fi, philosophy and political battles in addition to beautiful artwork and heart-wrenching storytelling. If you're a fan of The Apothecary Diaries and The Matrix, you will enjoy this ride thoroughly.
Concubine Walkthrough follows the journey of protagonist Yona Lee who in 2030, three years before the start of the story, played a game called Concubine Walkthrough. A popular and innovative otome game falling the protagonist Lili who has been forced to go to the imperial palace to become a concubine.
Max out the various stats Lili has to embark on one of many paths from marrying the emperor to royal imperial consort. Of course the one who stands as the pinnacle of obstructing your progress is villainess, Ranhee Seo, the royal imperial consort the terror of the imperial court.
Yona was only able to play this game to completion once in her life although the desire to complete other endings always remained. Three years later, that chance comes again when, for its upcoming anniversary, Concubine Walkthrough is having a special VR rerelease. That's all fine and dandy, what isn't fine and dandy though is the fact that Yona has woken up in the game without any memory of ever logging on. Furthermore, she's playing as the game's villainess, Ranhee.
Nothing she does will summon the game's menu and nothing she does let's her log out. The game master only gives her one requirement to exit the game, Marry the emperor and make Ranhee Seo the empress.
It's only then that Yona remembers that for the special VR release of the game, one of the promoted features of the rerelease was a co-op mode and she might not be the only player stuck in the game as she is forced to strategize and partake in deadly games within the world of concubines.
Through its storytelling, Concubine Walkthrough encourages both the readers and characters alike to contemplate:
If you woke up one day and realized your entire life was a simulation, does that make your life any less meaningful? Simulated it may have been, the pains and joys your heart experienced was still real to you. It's still your life.
What is reality and what does that mean to you? Is reality something you choose for yourself or is that choice made for you?
All wrapped in unique artwork, comedy gold and riveting political plots as you watch Yona survive plots on her life and has to strategize her get backs.
1) Beautiful Artwork
Concubine Walkthrough is one of the most splendid manhwas in terms of artwork. It's drawn intentionally to look reminiscent of traditional Korean artwork and is incredibly intricate from the hanbooks to the headpieces the various characters wear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are just a few of my favorite shots from the series but they are far from the only ones. From the very first chapter, you're getting hit with bangers in terms of the quality. Bongbong never misses.
2) The comedy is immaculate
Tumblr media
From Yona getting stuck with shitty items like a hairclip that gives her the sense of smell of a dog but compels her to bark uncontrollably to getting a jar that's literally only full of candy.
Yona's luck with items is absolute dog water and because of that, she can find herself in some hilarious situations. She can't get anything good to save her own life and seeing how she has to make these items work is a treasure in its own right.
Even without that, Yona's dynamic with characters like Lili is quite hilarious as the story progresses.
3) The mystery & philosophy
Even Yona's eyes are representative of red and blue pills given to Neo in The Matrix.
If you're a fan of sci-fi, romance and want to read an otome isekai romp that subverts your expectations? Please read this manhwa. It's The Matrix mixed with historical Korean fiction (and of course, otome isekai at its finest).
I loved loved LOVED the philosophy behind the story, the themes. The discussion of what reality is and choosing what reality means/is to you.
Just because your entire life is a simulation, does that make your entire life up until that point irrelevant? Simulated it may be, your joy, your pain, your love, all of that still felt real, right? There were so many things I never considered about that very topic until I read this series.
4) The Characters
There is not enough time in the day to delve into the characters of Concubine Walkthrough. They're all layered, complex and you won't be able to get enough of them as the story progresses. Even now after finishing the story months later, I still want more content concerning the cast. From protagonists to side characters.
Yona is a very compelling protagonist from start to finish. She's active, rather than letting things just happen she gets the jump on what she can. Her intelligence and her empathy as well as her comedic genius is so fun to watch along the beautifully illustrated pages. Not to mention her chemistry with characters Lili and Youngjung is a sight to behold.
Sadly, despite how key Lili and Youngjung are to the plot, I cannot delve too deeply about them due to spoilers. What I can say, however, is that Lili is a breath of fresh air on the trope of having the original protagonist of the source material interact with the story's female lead.
And Youngjung? In a lot of ways he represents the themes I was discussing in my previous point.
And of course, I cannot mention Concubine Walkthrough without bringing up Sunshine in any capacity. The mysterious eunuch who has become Yona's ally in this game. Like Lili and Youngjung, I cannot delve too deeply into this character without major spoilers but just know that even when you think you finally have the grasp on this character, Bongbong will still manage to flip the script on its head and surprise you. Multiple times even.
And I think that's enough singing praises for this manhwa (not really). Like I said, this manhwa is The Apothecary Diaries meets The Matrix wrapped up in the bow of the otome isekai genre. Not only do you get beautiful artwork but a vibrant cast and deep story along with it.
A violent yet captivating world of concubines with a strong splash of sci-fi sounds like such a strange mixture, but Bongbong blends them beautifully into one of the best stories I've ever read.
Please, and I cannot stress this enough, give Concubine Walkthrough a read.

Surviving as a fish
So the ML is a workaholic CEO and often fails to spend time with his family. Worked with some shady guy who then tries to kill him by dumping him in water cause the ML knows his darkest secrets. The ML didn't suspect him cause they were friendly at first. While drowning some mysterious power turns him into a largemouth bass fish and he has to survive as a fish to get back to his family and get revenge on who betrayed him. The humour and the seriousness is quite balanced. I really like it so far.
Male lead and his fish form:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is quite hilarious (sorry bro) 🤣
His family is adorable
Tumblr media
And the villain who attempted to murder him
Tumblr media
Liar liar pants on fire
But don't feel so bad for the ML. He neglected his family for work. Won't spend time with his wife or kid. Bad husband and a bad parent. Worst of all his wife is a doormat who thinks she was holding him back. Should have divorced him long ago. Anyway I believe in second chances and he isn't far too gone. Now he's trying his best to protect his family. If can redeem himself I'll forgive him but I wish the wife had more spine.
I'm really excited to see how this goes.

Mini-reviews on 10 chapters Otome Isekai novels
• April 9, 2024 •

I’m The Only One Who Doesn’t Know That Villainess Is Man
Crossdressing ML what do I have to say? It's a trope that I'm a sucker for so it's not surprising that I absolutely love it! Everything is good, and in my opinion the story is perfectly establish within the first five chapters of the novel. l love that even though it seems like almost everything are perfectly aligning with Vivian's plan on conquering the story it still somewhat believable. Definitely would bookmark this novel.
Tumblr media
I Became an Omega Trapped on a Deserted Island with the Obsessed Male Lead
Confusing as f**ck. I read about twenty-three chapters of this novel and I can't follow the events of the story. There's a lot of unanswered questions like: How did her brother managed to switch genders? Why does being douse with water stimulate a rut/heat cycle? How come a dessert eagle gun be found in an island where the story set in an era where guns are still developing? And, who keeps delivering the notes in the island? Is this a game? A simulated magic island? I don't really know.

Akutou Ikka no Mana Musume, Tensei Saki mo Otome Game no Gokudou Reijou deshita - by Amekawa Touko (8.5/10)
Tumblr media
The beloved granddaughter of a Japanese mafia boss gets reincarnated...as the daughter of a mafia boss in a steampunk otome world. Sounds redundant, but it is funny. Her crazy fiance is the wild card that makes this life very different from the first.
Francesca is really good at being the daughter of a mafia boss. Her father should hate her, because she's just a stepping stone character in a romance game, but he adores her. She is the pride of the family, and she is heir even though she doesn't have a special magical gift.
Tumblr media
Francesca has a dream. A normal life and friends. It is all she has ever wanted. Her father's praise doesn't make her happy. She doesn't like the fear she inspires. Being in the mafia means normal friendships are impossible, so Francesca decided to give up long ago.
Tumblr media
Leonardo, her fiance, thinks her lack of desire for power is interesting. Especially after she threatens him with actual violence. If he tries to interfere apparently she's actually going to shoot him dead. Her threat does the opposite of what it is supposed to do. Leonardo falls for her that day.
Tumblr media
He turns the gun on her and he says he will never break their engagement. It doesn't matter if Francesca doesn't have powers. He loves her, and she's good with a gun AND she's cold as ice in dangerous situations. She is the ideal wife.
Tumblr media
Her true colors turn him on. The previous incarnation of Francesca was a pawn willing to do anything to marry her high caliber fiance. Leonardo is the kind of yandere that enjoys it when women play hard to get...I think? I also think he just likes Francesca as a partner, because of her ability to be calm under pressure and such. Anyway, it's obvious that the previous Francesca did not suit his taste.
Tumblr media
Francesca seems to think life as a regular person is easy. This seems silly at first. Why the hell does a rich and privileged young girl want to live on the other side so bad???
Well...
Tumblr media
Her grandfather adored her in her first life, but his mafia family ruined her childhood. They were overprotective, and she had to go to school with guards. None of the young kids played with her. They couldn't. Super young kids can't play without their parents consent, and no sane parent would let their child near her.
Tumblr media
She died protecting her beloved, strict grandfather. She was the perfect mafia daughter. All she has ever wanted is another life. A different one, where she can have friends.
Tumblr media
Her reincarnated life is kind of cruel. Her mafia father dotes on her....violently. her servants get punished if they dare to scuff her shoes. Her new father does love her for real, but Francesca is over it. She wants affection without blood...but Leonardo is a yandere.
Sorry.
Too bad.
Maybe in your third life...
Tumblr media
Here's a hint about the level of sadism we're dealing with. Leonardo used to physically torture and taunt his unworthy and powerless fiance. He was ruthless. Soulless. He's a hard man to love, and he was really popular in the game...even though he was hard to get. By "get" I mean hard to romance without dying in the process.
Good luck.

Everything I've read in Jan. 2024
Yona of the dawn
Tumblr media
Yona was the first story that i read this year and damm was it the right way to set the tone for the year. It's a story that has all of the elements that I adore in the fantasy genre, its got the action, political drama, the multi-facted characters. I won't be saying much about this manga because i have already have an older post talking about my favorite aspects, so if you want more in depth thoughts you can search for that
Kashoku no shiro
Tumblr media
Now here is a fun setting, Taisho era Japan with supernatural elements. Quick run down of the story, people are being affected by a mysterious disease that makes flowers bloom all over their bodies, once the flowers wilt so does the person but there are cases where they recover and become even healthier. But plot twist, the ones who survive will become demons who feast on human flesh. So thats where our protagonist Shiraume comes in, she acts as 'bait' for these demons, essentially luring them out for her master to slaughter
If i had to tell you what drew me to this story, it would be the art style, like it is drop dead gorgeous. Also the design of our heroine is just my type too which is a bonus
Plot wise it does feel a little all over the place, it jumps persecptive quite often. Like it jumps form a detective story, to a josei love story, to Demon slayer which feels kinda jarring for me. But the backstory of our protagonist was done quite well, one thing i can praise is that our heroine isn't a simpering doormat. It's true that she has lived a hard life but she just keep living in the best way that she can manage. Shiraume is never the type to mope around or bemoan her fate, she takes charge and endure, she does everything in her power to live for her loved ones.
Its a good read all in all, but since theres only about 20 chapters that are out i can't really tell if this is gonna flop or not. I'll be keeping on eye on it to see if the author manages to get it together.
Bibliophile princess
Tumblr media
The most mediocre otome isekai story i've ever fucking read. Its vanilla, like 'sex with the lights off no kinky shit' vanilla.
Story-wise, it's a very simple set up. Book enthusiast Elianna is in a contract fiancee relationship with the crown prince who i cannot be bothered to remember or google the name of. She is beloved by all of the staff memebers, all the secondary male characters love her and she has a great family but oh no! It seems that the prince has fallen for another woman, which means that her engagement with the prince will be ending soon. Yeah if your an otome isekai reader you can guess where this is going, villainess tries to ruin our heroines rep by spreading false rumors yada yada yada...
Similar to Kashoku no shiro, what drew me in was the art nouveau style. I mean the amount of details in the illustrations are amazing, coupled with the dreamy pastel color palette it creates this feeling that you really are in a fairy tale world
One of my main problems with the first volume is how weirdly structured the story is. Like it begins with the prince asking Elianna to enter a contract relationship with him and them jumps to a four year time skip for no apparent reasoning? Like we don't get to see alot of romantic development between them so now suddenly Elianna is in love? But moving on, i felt like Elianna has like little to no self awareness or agency. The first volumes conflict is about how this noble girl is rumored to be the princes lover and is planning to take Eliannas place. At this point you would expect to see our heroine stand up for herself and assert her place in the court right? Wrong. She was basically left in the dark about whats truly going on until the end of the volume. It was revealed that the noble girl was a villain all along who was trying to frame Elianna for shit she didn't do, also conveniently our MC has a mile long list of accomplishments that we as the reader didn't know about, and apparently she didn't either. So yeah, the male leads basically was protecting her for the whole story and she just wandered around feeling insecure about being replaced
Cold game
Tumblr media
Do you like the story of king Henry the eighths six wives? Do you wanna see all six of them do a battle royal for the chance to become queen? Do you like crossdressing heroines? Well look no further than Cold game
Our MC is princess Aruna of the B kingdom, yes i know weird name but bare with me here, who is meant to be engaged to the king of the E kingdom. But here's the sus part, he already has a queen from the S country but he's demanding another wife from the B country? Quite the odd request but since B is weaker than E they had to comply with the demands. Aruna knows she's being sent as a sacrificial lamb but her lord father told her to hang on for a bit, one day he will get her out of that place. So to protect herself, Aruna swap places with her handmaiden and pretended to be crossdressing knight.
One of the best things about this story is the political intrigue. Like from the get go, we are shown that the court is a brutal place where an inconspicuous letter can be the cause of your down fall. People here will always watch your every move, everyone fears one another to an extent. Also the side characters are so fucking cool, like these people can star in their own spin off kinda cool.

Note
I’m in love with bloodthirsty sapphics (preferably w/ traumatic backstories) who WIN! Can you share some recs, pretty please? Any media is fine; can be subtextual/based on vibes. I consider not dying/ending worse off as winning, yeah.... Examples: Homura Akemi (rebellion), Hideko (handmaiden), Lady Eboshi, Doona (sadistic beauty), Kirika & Mireille, Hild (vinland saga).
Black & White - these two women are so weird. Like this is good and I like it but their relationship is violent sex. I am not saying this is sexual violence, I'm saying they annoy each other until someone starts throwing fists. Then they hatefuck. This happens frequently. I recommend this. Official release in October.

Her Tale of Shim Cheong - Unfortunately no longer available on tappytoons. I know you said you want them winning, and they do but their wins are hard won, fought for inch by inch. This is an incredible story about systematic sexism. Systematic oppression is hard to write. Internalized bigotry is hard to write without sounding childish. Characters who are complicit and supportive of their own oppression are hard to write. Tale of Shim Cheong does it all, easy.

These girls are barely treading water in a society that thoroughly despises them and eventually it's time to say fuck society and fuck anyone who tries to come for my girl.

The Villainess and the Woman Who Would Do Anything For Love - Full disclosure, I liked this so much I translated several chapters, though I burned out after a weirdly aggressive fan tried to manage me like an employee. It looks like someone completed it though, so check it out!! Inescapable death loops and empty sacrifice! It's short and good.
Tumblr media
The Antagonist's Pet - I waffled on recommending this one because this is either editorial meddling or flat out queerbaiting. The way Sasha (MC) interacts with other girls is gay. She's mocked by men for her overly intimate behavior with women. Her role is insinuated as that of a prostitute for aristocratic women. She is crawling into laps and snuggling up with *women.* Hell, the official translation made its header pic MC and Rebecca in an endgame couple post. Seriously, I was waiting for Sasha to say she worked at a lesbian hostess bar before she died.

The first time I read this, I was mad as hell about the love triangle between Arth and Rebecca because of course Arth will win, he's a man. But on second read? Poly. It's so obviously a mutually supportive Sasha-centered poly relationship. Of course that doesn't happen in the end but there was enough sweet scenes between the three of them that I can ignore the forced unrequited end.
I spent too much time convincing you this is gay instead of on the other thing, yes Rebecca is a bloodythirsty sapphic, and for once we get a quasi realistic look at a villainess overcoming fate. Too many of these end up over girlpowering characters, so it's satisfying when they're forced to acknowledge unsurmountable walls. That's half of why she's out for blood, imagine realizing you have natural talent in a sport that intrigues you, something you could have easily been a top contender in, better than the men even...had you not been coerced into wasting your youth on serving an ungrateful little loser of a king.
Also Lilith isn't gay but I think you will like her a lot.

'I'm in Love with the Villainess' English Audiobook Debuts
On Thursday, November 16, Seven Seas Entertainment released its unabridged audiobook adaptation of the first volume of Inori's I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou). The audiobook, released under Seven Sea's audio imprint, Siren, is narrated by Courtney Shaw (Liz and the Blue Bird).
Initially released in English in 2020, the first volume of I'm in Love with the Villainess follows office worker Ohashi Rei, who is reincarnated as Rae, the protagonist of her favorite otome game. However, Rae is not interested in the fantasy world's many eligible royal bachelors from the game and instead only has eyes for Claire François, the antagonist. Rae uses her knowledge of the game and its world to get close to her beloved villainess and swears that she will save her from her ultimate fate when the revolution comes.
The audiobook edition is 6 hours and 54 minutes long. It is produced by John Marshall Media.
This seminal Yuri series is notable for its explicit focus on and discussion of different LGBTQ+ identities, including queer marriages and families. The series, which began as a webnovel on Shosetsuka ni Naro, is a sleeper hit. It was initially licensed in Japan as a digital-only light novel series by GL Bunko but gained popularity, especially in international markets, leading to multiple rereleases, adaptations, and spinoffs.
YuriMother gave the first light novel volume a perfect 10/10 review, calling it "A stunningly profound, entertaining, and queer title that eclipses other isekai and Yuri series."

An anime adaptation of the series is currently airing on Tokyo MX and streaming internationally on Crunchyroll. It is produced by Platinum Vision and directed by Hideki Oba.
The I'm in Love with a Villainess Volume 1 audiobook is available on Audible, BookWalker Global, Spotify, Google Play, and other major audio platforms. The second volume will be released on December 7.

sorry if this is a dumb question but what are you coding, how are you learning? (also im so nosy asfjhajdsf but what are the webtoons (?) that are pictured in that pic you posted? i am Looking. Interestedly.)
im making a webbed site!
i used a template for the layout but i'm using W3 and chatGPT to learn css and more advanced html (im super hopeless with javascript)
the webtoons/manhwa in the screenshot are from my page where i have a spread of some of the more controversial otome isekai titles. each image links to the specific page i made for that title with my personal review!!!
but i only have a few so far, since it requires a lot of re-reading for each one lol. and especially in the controversial ones, sometimes the re-read is a sloooooog.
