I don't know what to make of the princess Irene and Curdie series lol. I read both books a long time ago. The first one was great, mysterious and terrifying at times. The illustration was so beautiful in an old antique ways. I was confused of their age in the second one. And the great great great mamy great grandmother's tasks for Curdie was very confusing also. Maybe I should try again.

🐸 The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“Some little girls would have been afraid to find themselves this alone in the middle of the night, but Irene was a princess.”
Princess Irene has discovered a secret staircase in the castle that leads to a labyrinth of rooms and another stair that leads to a secret room. Meanwhile, Curdie, the miner’s son, overhears a fiendish plot hatched by the goblins that live under the mountain. With the help of Irene and her magic ring, can she and Curdie stop the goblins before it’s too late?
When I was in elementary school I went to this old bookshop with a friend and got a vintage hardcover copy of this book and The Secret Garden and an astrology book. I only had $8 and the gentleman said that’d be just fine for the three books. I read The Princess and the Goblin over and over, revisiting it in middle school and high school. Now I’m reading it again!
This is such a nostalgic story for me as it deals with what it truly means to be a princess, what it means to believe in magic, and how we must care for each other. This story is very magical and it holds a special place in my heart. It’s adventurous and keeps you guessing.

1-3 for the ship ask
What is your oldest ship?
Either Snow White/Prince Florian or Prince Cornelius/Thumbelina... or... Curdie/Princess Irene!
I was a real animated fairy tale enthusiast as a child. These three films and the characters' true loves meant a whole lot to me.
2) What is your newest ship?
That is a great question. I find new fanart every day. But I guess you can say some ships from Spy x Family? I've never watched the show or read the manga, but I'm familiar with the characters! So maybe... Damianya! It's really innocent and adorable. :D
3) OTP?
I think I'll have a different answer any time anyone asks me this! lol.
Right now, it's either Mareach or ALBW!Zelink. :D
Thank you, JJ! Take care! 💛

2024 Reading - Completed Book 2/12
Starting this challenge, I truly didn't think I'd surpass my goal of reading one book per month, yet here we are!
I completed The Princess and the Goblin (201 pages) last night!
Tumblr media
Growing up, the animated movie of this book was one of my favorites! I watched the vhs hundreds of times.
I didn't realize until a few years ago that it was based off of a book, and I've been curious to read it.
Weirdly enough, I found this book both an easy and challenging read. The chapters are nice and short and the words are large, so there is less to read per page - it is a children's book, after all.
Admittedly, the narration, dialogue, and descriptions were sometimes difficult for me to to keep up with. I think it was just the flowery/older writing and speaking style that took me a while to get used to. The book was originally published around 1870 (thanks, Wikipedia) and certainly reads as if it was.
The book moves quickly, and sometimes felt as if it went from 0 to 70 in a matter or sentences. The book (for the most part) is not what I would call violent. It's very sweet and innocently charming, as Princess Irene is.
But let me tell you, when Curdie stumbled upon a goblin on his reconnaissance mission and straight up KILLED it by stabbing it to death with his pocketknife?? I was not expecting that.
Especially considering he has had a few encounters with goblins up until this point who took him captive and said they might kill him...and all that resulted was a "fight" scene of him rhyming poems and stamping their feet (their weaknesses) to escape a hoard of goblins while in their lair! I mean...he did slash at them with his knife, but it was never mentioned that he stabbed them!
Yet he just came across one solitary goblin on the side of the mountain and stabbed it to death?? I was floored. Curdie took a life and did not even hesitate to continue on with his day as if nothing ever happened.
The ending bit describing all the drowned goblins was also rather shocking imagery to read about, but I think Curdie killing that one goblin takes the cake for me.
Despite that, following along with Irene was nice, and brought back memories of spending time with my own grandmother as a child. I really enjoyed this read and am glad to cross it off my list.
Now I really want to watch the movie again! Though sadly it seems impossible to find an upload of decent quality that doesn't look deep fried.
---
A bit random, but I put batteries into some fairy lights I found at the Goodwill bins and they work! I picked them up because they looked completely unused, but I wasn't sure if they were broken or something (and that was why they were donated).
I wrapped them around our headboard and I think they look so nice!
Tumblr media
They're actually super bright - I finished the book last night in the dark using only the lights as a light source.
Very cozy! x

And then just for fun I've included the pair of them as adults bc why not?
Curdie's outfit has been updated a little to be more Italian Renaissance but only if you squint. Also I am sad I couldn't include his baby-blue 80s sweat-headband but it is very clearly an 80s aerobics headband. XD
Princess Irene on the other hand has changed much less but it's still a departure from historical fashion in a number of ways. I had fun with her hair though. Any excuse to do long Princess hair.

These sketches of older versions of Curdie, Prince Froglip, and Princess Irene were inspired by @darkraixcesselia95 ‘s fanfic, The Princess, the Goblin, and the Wolf. Not totally accurate, but hey, it’s a start. I want to say thank you, @darkraixcesselia95 , for keeping the PATG fandom alive with your fic, and I’m always checking for updates, as I do enjoy reading it myself.

And here are some more character designs for The Princess and the Goblin! With some questionable costuming choices (an odd mixture of medieval and victorian dress).
Trying to figure out their size differences was a little difficult since it sort of looked wrong. Irene is 8 and Curdie is 12, so the adult guard is there to show just how small they actually are.

Princess Irene could carry the Ring; Curdie could carry her, but he could also lead the men of the west, so that's just an issue of resource management; Great-Grandmother Irene could run magic circles around Gandalf. These are just facts.
