Oh my god. Our DM sometimes… fundamentally misses how traumatic things can be? So in tonights session we got sucked into a trap made by a beholder. We had a normal NPC with us, an old god who had lapsed into obscurity and powerlessness, and four adventurers.
It turned out the beholder wanted to keep us in a person zoo, and the DM stripped us of all powers and magic while in this prison. Our only food was unlimited doughnut holes, grape juice, and water. There was also a mimic trash can but no toilet.
So we ended up dumping our waste into the mimic which just. Ate it.
Eventually we decided to try to ramp up the old gods powers by believing in them really hard to try to escape. We played games of chance and prayed to them for luck.
It started as card games and roulette wheels of tea, escalating in insanity until we ended up using the mimic as a piñata. With one extremely good whack to it it puked up the piss and doughnut holes we’d fed it.
And that was really funny! Haha! Now how long are we gonna be stuck in here? Not that long, right?
This continued for two. Months. (In game). No food but doughnut holes and grape juice, no magic, my dragon couldn’t even transform for some reason, all while under constant surveillance from a sociopathic beholder.
When we’d finally powered up the god enough to break out of her plane all of us players were just:
Tumblr media
And we were like, “holy fuck, we need therapy.”
The DM then laughed and said, “Oh, you’re adventurers, you don’t need therapy! It wasn’t that bad!”

So I was able to watch the RWBY Volume 9 epilogue shown at this year RTX, they weren't able to make it for V9 because production stuff happened and it will probably be shown in V10 with some changes according to how V9 actually changed.
First I'd like to say that (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT) this epilogue is everything ♥ The message of hope and kindness is just there, it's fully there and I'm just so happy to see it on screen. Winter feeling guilty for everyone's death and Penny's death, Qrow being optimistic and changing his perspective, the Schnees helping how they can, the end with the memorial and the reunion..... I just can't I'm freaking crying sdfgdfgf
Just, please be kind, even if life is shitty and complex, kindness is everything and so precious, kindness and love are just so special and I hope everyone can be inspired by that. RWBY might not be perfect, there are a lot of things that could be done in a better way, but I still love this show and story for how much it grows and changes and evolves with the people who're making it and the community watching it.
Also, of course I have to add my little not so delusional Penny moment for this krkrk--
In the epilogue, Winter mentions Penny twice, when she says it should have been her to die, not team RWBY, Jaune, Penny and everyone else. She's feeling guilty she got to survive when Penny's (and team RWBY) the one who believed in people and had hope. Winter mentions Penny again right after by saying "Because of me, Penny's gone, forever", IS IT JUST ME or is that kinda odd there's so much insistence around Penny's death since V9 and again like that ?
I wrote whole threads about it already for why I can see her coming back, but stuff just keep piling up and I might starting to just be sure she'll come back later. Most of the time, when a character is mentioned to be "gone, forever", it just feels like it's strange and this might not be the case. Especially after what we learned in Volume 9, I just think there's something cooking but I'M NOT CRWBY I CAN'T BE SURE BUT THERE'S SOMETHING I CAN FEEL IT----
I talked about it with the friend who made me discover RWBY tonight btw, they haven't even seen V9 yet (only 2 chapters that we started together) but they also think that scenaristically it can totally make sense and they can see Penny coming back, the 3rd time finally being the good time and for it to be permanent and confirmed. And I agree, in a larger view I just think that it is logical, the whole thing about Penny is that everything feels odd and weird and strange and ANYWAY it feels like they're really cooking something
But yeah this "Penny's gone, forever", it's just so strange omg. I know that Winter is feeling guilty, but you know, it's still something they REALLY insist on and they make the viewer know about that, almost as if they wanted to say "SEE, that's what everyone think, everyone think she's gone forever but SURPRISE NOPE SHE'S NOT-"--
ANYWAY I'll stop rambling, I love RWBY omg. I love Ruby and Penny for their hope and kindness, for the perfect ship vibes they share together, I just need them to be reunited whoooaaAAAAH

do you think there's anything to be implied about the quality of rwby's writing and framing in light of how much of the audience misinterprets salem/oz and the role of the gods? i see so many people reading the lost fable as a straightforward condemnation of salem and ozma as a pretty basic tragic hero that it makes me nervous about the future of the show and that IM reading too much into things when i see more nuance in salem. are that many people really that shallow when engaging with rwby? idk
nah people are—well tbh i think what it comes down to mainly is that fandom is not really centered around critical analysis, it’s centered on transformative engagement, and while these are by no means mutually exclusive endeavors they are in fact. Different. analytical vs transformative approaches to the text are different endeavors with different goals requiring different skillsets and can but do not inherently overlap. frankly in fandom spaces i think real textual analysis is not just ancillary but actively discouraged; nobody is quicker to respond to analytical discussions with “it’s not that deep” than a fan who doesn’t like the discussion and there is a noticeable tendency in fandom spaces for any analysis that isn’t 100% ebullient to be read as negativity or critical—e.g. note the frequency with which my reading of ozma is interpreted as character bashing—which isn’t to say that fandoms do not engage analytically at all, but in broad terms there is something of an unspoken… chilliness toward textual analysis in fandom culture. and i am saying this from the perspective of having written a lot of textual analysis and a lot of fanfiction across different fandoms; there is A Pattern. you write a detailed analytical breakdown of your reading of a character and see people tagging it fandom negativity while gushing about the detailed character study you wrote based on that same reading enough times and you start to pick up on the fact that maybe fandoms are not really built for analytical engagement. there is also the whole thing where fandom has an entire category of headcanon predicated on “this thing happened in the text but i don’t like it so no it didn’t” and a second entire category predicated on “this has no basis and is possibly out of character but i like it so happened actually” lmao [TO BE CLEAR THIS IS NOT A VALUE JUDGMENT I HAVE NONSENSE HEADCANONS ALSO ITS FINE.]
anyway this is all fine but! because fandoms devote the bulk of their collective energy into pouring out vast endless streams of like, fanfic and fanart and headcanon and “ship dynamics” [i still do not quite understand what these are] and incorrect quote mills and so forth you tend to get a sort of collective flattening of the text. there is a tendency for characters to be stripped down and reduced to small easily-manageable sets of tropes derived more from aesthetics and first impressions and for any moral complexity to be boiled down to simple black and white and for unique worldbuilding to be smudged a bit until it resembles its nearest recognizable trope. there is a sort of creative entropy. a smooth surface is easier to write on. also sometimes fans do not Obsessively Rewatch The Show four times in the space of a year and over time details get memetically blurred and this, obviously, is detrimental to the overall fidelity-to-canon of popular fanon.
and then like the thing to remember about rwby is it’s a very detail-oriented story, and one that respects its audience. the one downside of that storytelling approach is that fandom is uniquely ill-equipped for it (think about how many people Completely Missed that ironwood was on the express train to fascism land in V4-5 even though. the narrative made it like. hilariously obvious)
In Summary i lived through the fandom where the protagonist after two years of increasingly toxic behavior towards her bestie, charbroiled her friend’s arm into a shriveled blackened husk and not only did not apologize but had a whole episode about being mad at the friend for being upset and then 95% of the fandom was shocked when the friend went “fuck you” and stole the magical artifact whose power was involved in the charbroiling incident all of four episodes later; and almost two years later half the remaining is still Discoursing about how the friend “didn’t have a reason” for betraying the protagonist. tts was a show written with small children in mind. i have witnessed Actual Forty Year Olds insisting that this character’s betrayal was petty and childish. rwby is a lot more tightly-written and nuanced and not a disney princess cartoon and while it does benefit from its fandom not being mostly Disney People the fandom is still. A Fandom. doing what fandoms… do.

Thinking about the time me and my girlfriend were cosplaying as Penny and Ruby. (Cause they’re cool and gay for each other) This guy came up and proceeded to be like “Ahh Nuts & Dolts! I see you have good taste” Which insinuates he knows it’s a couples thing. So we talk for a cold minute about the show and he, and this is not a joke, ends the conversation with “And just so you know… I respect WAMAN” and turns his water bottle to show us his boobs and buts hentai sticker collection. (We think this was a flirting attempt. Also neither of us were women)

Wait, so Wukong is Sun’s first name? Or is the Strawbana kid going by an entirely different surname?
Wukong is Sun's first name! The reason everyone, including himself, calls him Sun?
Because Sun thinks it's his first name. Vacuo doesn't run on the naming styles of Mistral, where Sun's biological parents come from. Sun is their clain name, but when he was adopted by Eliana, who doesn't follow that and simply saw Sun Wukong on his blanket, she believed Sun was his first name.
Out of world reason? A lot of people, including myself at the beginning, didn't realise that Wukong is actually the first name, not Sun. So I just kept it that way and added the lil funny confusion into the story.
He eventually learns, of course, he just keeps his first name as Sun since it's the name he's grown used to being called.

I’m excited to announce that I will be attending animenyc ! This will be my first out of state con so please be nice to me, otherwise I will cry. I will be debuting my new Ruby cosplay that weekend, and bringing some old favorites. I will have to leave behind my props though just because I don’t think they’ll make it through TSA.
I will also be attending Anime Destiny this coming Sunday! It will be more of a casual cosplay for that day. Oh boy, back to back cons. Hope I survive.
