Hiisi
Originally the word Hiisi in Finland referred to a sacred grove or other sacred site. Later the word more and more was used for the beings that inhabited these places. These Hiisi could be spirits, giants, deities or other supernatural beings.
In the area of Finland where i live the Hiisi was believed to be angels that had been denied entry into heaven. My own speculation is that this is because this part of Finland came in contact with Christianity a bit earlier and the people mixed their old beliefs with the new. They still believed in the Hiisi but explained it with the help of the new religion.
And of course, you had to keep your local Hiisi happy by offering it food or other sacrifices. You could not risk the Hiisi becoming dissatisfied and angry. Who knows what would happen then?
