The Messenger space probe that was destined for Mercury launched in August 2004 and took 7 years to get into Mercury’s orbit. 7 years before it could finally, truly start its work.
Messenger was slingshot from inner planet to inner planet. Going from Earth to Venus, then back to Venus again, before completing three flybys of Mercury, only catching glimpses of its final destination. Until, finally, after 6 years, 7 months and 16 days, it slowed down enough thanks to those planetary flybys to safely enter orbit.
It travelled 7,9 billion km to get to Mercury, a planet that, at its closest, is only 77 million km away from Earth (you can't take a direct route because the sun's gravity will speed up the spacecraft too much).
Messenger then spent the next four years around that planet, from 2011 to 2015. And then, after those 4 years, after all the propellant was used up and it could no longer correct its orbit, it crashed down to the planet’s thin rocky surface. The one it had spent all those years observing.
All that time and distance travelled, only to spend 4 years around Mercury. 1505 days.
And it was all worth it.
Thanks to Messenger, we know so much about Mercury, the tiny crater-riddled planet at the heart of our solar system.
We know that in its polar regions, there is ice located in shadowy craters that the sunlight can never touch. We learned that, due to its cooling core, Mercury has contracted about 7 km in radius. We’ve learnt about its composition, its magnetic field, its past volcanic activity, and so much more.
Messenger went through 2 mission extensions, traveled about 14 billion km in total, took over 290,000 images, and mapped the whole of the planet for the first time.
We have thousands of detailed images of a planet so hard to get to, humanity is unlikely to see with its own eyes in my lifetime. And those images are all so beautiful.

NASA is Working on 3D Print Technology Circuits in Space
3D printing is an emerging technology with numerous potential applications. NASA has been investigating the use of 3D printing in space in recent years, with the goal of developing a method to print circuits in microgravity.
3D printing circuits in space offer several advantages, including reducing the need for expensive and time-consuming Earth-transportation of delicate electronic components, creating customized circuits for specific applications, and repairing damaged circuits in situ, saving time and resources.
NASA and academic engineers tested hybrid printed electronic circuits near the Kármán line in space. The Suborbital Technology Experiment Carrier-9 sounding rocket mission, launched on April 25, reached an altitude of 174 kilometers before descending via parachute.

Here are some of the potential applications of 3D-printed circuits in space:
Repairing or replacing damaged circuits. This could be done in-situ, without the need to send replacement parts from Earth.
Creating custom-designed circuits. This could be used to optimize circuits for specific applications, such as radiation resistance or low power consumption.
Manufacturing electronic devices on-demand. This could reduce the need to ship supplies from Earth and make space exploration more efficient and cost-effective.
The SubTEC-9 mission tested 14 different types of technologies in addition to the 3D-printed electronic circuits. These include a faster telemetry link, a new antenna, a low-cost gyro, a new high-density battery, and a new smaller star tracker, which is a sensor designed to align an important object in space, such as a star, and is intended for altitude control systems.
The SubTEC missions are only a small part of NASA's Sounding Rockets Programme (NSRP), which began in 1959 with the goal of providing space and earth science research activities. NSRP has launched approximately 3,000 missions to suborbital space over the last two decades, with a mission success rate of more than 90% and a launch success rate of 97 percent.

Ffs every time I re watch season 3 something else jumps out at me I will forever be spiralling about jiara. The jj and pope talk scene on the boat after THE BOAT SCENE 👀 JJ Maybank the boy that never confronts conflict just turns his head and “walks the other way” actually makes a damn effort to talk to pope at the slim chance he could have something with kie?! Like he confronts this situation because HE WANTS KIE SO BADLY. I can’t I’m emotional. And then he doesn’t really get the answer he’s looking for from pope & topped off with arriving back to the OBX and reminded of the different worlds they live in which resurfaces his doubts about them both together, thinking he’ll never be good enough and then he starts self sabotaging 😭
His chat with Pope is actually a gold mine. I mean when he says "or maybe you did see something" HE'S NOT EVEN DENYING IT? Or how Pope asks "If you're asking me if I like it" and he responds "yeah". "YEAH"??? EXCUSE ME? He is straight up asking Pope if he's okay with it and the only reason he would be doing that is if he was seriously thinking of pursuing something with her. It's not "nothing is ever going to happen between us" it's "would you be okay with it if something did happen?". THAT IS INSANE! And then his face when he turns to walk away hurts my feelings so bad, you can see him shutting down already.
I truly believe if Pope had not interrupted they would have kissed. He was still in the fog of Poguelandia/being reunited with her and the doubt hadn't been able to take hold yet.
