Tfw everything seems to make your throat burn and you don’t know whether it’s cross-reactivity or you’re actually allergic to this thing. And it’s not even pollen season yet. Sigh. My already complicated relationship with food has only gotten more complicated since finding out, too

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (9)
B for Beth (Birch) - December 24th - January 20th
“Lady of the Forest - First month of the Celtic tree calendar”
Colour: white, Star: Venus, Gem: crystal, Gender: female, Element: air & water, Symbols: initiation, purity + cleanliness, love + friendship, birth + rite of passage
The fast-growing birch, as a nurturing tree, provides a shield for slower-growing trees, so oaks and pines follow the birch in putting down roots in the earth. The leaves are small and cast a wispy shadow on the ground, allowing other plants to grow in the shade they create, which in turn attracts a wide variety of insects, birds and other creatures to the forest. It is ironic that the weaker trees, sheltered by the birch and increasing in number, overtake the nurturing trees and grow, driving the birch to death. The birch has connotations of openings to new horizons and overcoming difficulties. It was believed that the birch, which provides strength and protection in times of adversity, would nurture new life and its forests would repel evil.
The barked logs were burnt ceaselessly as yule logs to be lit in the fireplace on Christmas Eve during the rituals of the time.
In Celtic shamanism, this birch is considered a cosmic tree, and the druids would climb the trunk of the white birch to different heavens and visualised in their minds to interact with the spirit world.
At the base of the birch is the hallucinogenic and highly toxic Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric. Celtic shamans believed in the fly agaric mushrooms, in Indian mythology in soma drinks, or the ancient Etruscans believed it to bring immortality and was a holy mushroom. They used to trip to the underworld with its help.
Birch birch has a variety of medicinal properties, especially for rheumatism and arthritis. It cleanses the body and is effective against skin diseases, and the ancient Celts saw the white bark of birch as a sign of its cleansing powers.

Silver Birch Shillelagh (For Sale)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a hand-crafted Silver Birch Shillelagh, which I am currently selling.
The length of wood used was ritually harvested from an old Silver Birch tree, which are lovely and folklorically signifcant trees, known for their associations with Purity, Hope, and Renewal. The knob of the stave—which was a natural formed root bulb—was de-barked and polished, while the rest of the piece was carefully treated and varnished so as to protect the glossy paper-bark of the specimen. The sorcerous wood varnish I used is one I developed myself using a variety of potent arboreal resins, such as Dragon's Blood, Storax, and Black Frankincense—both accentuated the warm color of the polished wood, while preserving the shine of the bark.
This Shillelagh is lightweight but sturdy, measures approximately 40 inches/101.5 centimeters in length, and I am willing to be reasonably flexible with pricing—so reach out if you think you would be interested in purchasing it! As always, I'm glad to work out payment plans when necessary.

Eivor's Herbarium - P3: Silver Birch
WIP posts for this page are here and here. See a video of mounting the pressed birch here]

Silver birch (Betula pendula)
This is a common tree here in the UK, but it would have been familiar to Eivor from Norway too. Around the world, including in Scandinavia, birches of many kinds have long a history of use in many forms. Birch makes an excellent firewood and a strong timber, but other uses of birch include;
Use of birch tar extracted from bark as an adhesive e.g. in fletching arrows and making boats, as waterproofing to treat leather, and as a chewing gum (according to ~5000 year old finds from Finland and Denmark)
Birch sap can be drunk as birch water, and a syrup made from boiled sap has been used for thousands of years and is still in use today across Europe
The peeling bark has long been used as paper - key historic examples include Sanskrit texts from Afghanistan and East Slavic birch bark letters found in Russia
Extracts of buds, leaves, and bark have been used in traditional medicines for wound healing and as antiseptics; extracts contain betulin and betulinic acid, and there's one EU approved topical treatment for wounds, Episalvan, which contains birch extract
Birch bark was used in making a variety of textiles, and the inner bark is also edible, though most references seem to suggest it was eaten as a famine food (and as with edible lichens like rock tripe, this usage doesn't suggest it tastes great... 😬)
Tumblr media
So I've no doubt Eivor would know this tree well. It's found all over the landscape of AC Valhalla, but I noticed it most in the Grantebridgescire (Cambridgeshire) arc on the riverbank looking across to Duroliponte, and in the marshy fens of Middletun where we first meet Soma. A quick look around the encampment in the fens shows trees of various ages. Stumps bearing turkey tails, bracket fungi, and lichens can also be found all around the place. This is a nice touch - I see similar fungi growing on birch often, so it helped make the environment seem realistic to me.

Other beautiful places to find birch looking good in game are the autumn woods of Ledecestrescire (Leicestershire), the Forest of Denu (Dean), Glowercesterscire (Gloucestershire - sorry, but it's weird AF just using the Olde names when you live here lol.) There's some nice examples in and around Ravensthorpe too.

Went for a postbox bagging walk this morning which turned out to include a very steep hill which I bitterly regretted about half way up!
It was -3C this morning, but also blazing sunshine and a bright blue sky, and I snapped a few things, besides postboxes!, that caught my eye:

Plants that are thick with frost because the sun hasn’t reached them yet.
