One of the coolest bats in the whole world, Kuri the spectacled flying fox bat, passed away this summer. Her species is native to Australia but Kuri lived at Lubee Bat Conservancy in the United States, having been abandoned at the facility 22 years ago in a kennel with a note stating “Hi, my name is Kuri, please take care of me”. How she came to the United States in the first place is a mystery.
While in vet school I was privileged to help out with Kuri’s acupuncture treatments that she received every other week in her old age. I’d feed her peach flavored baby food during her treatment and she was a very well tempered little lady. I’m glad I got to know her for a brief time. If you happen to have any photos or artwork of Kuri (you never know, Tumblr is small!) the conservancy is collecting images for a memorial to be held in October. Here’s a video I took of Kuri grooming her fur so you can see how ridiculously cute she was. Her keepers and caretakers will miss her dearly, please keep them in your thoughts.

Would anyone like to hear some animal facts? No? Well you're getting them anyway.
First off, spectacled flying foxes. Aka these guys.
Tumblr media
They are 22 to 25 centimeters long and weigh 1000 grams. They mostly eat oranges, mangoes, bananas, figs, pears, and avocadoes. Also they can live up to 30 years. Did you know that they are good swimmers? Well you know now. They also use their wings as fans when it's hot out.
The next animal on this list is the eagle owl.
Tumblr media
These bad boys are 58 to 71 centimeters long and weigh 2.7 kilograms. They mostly eat voles, rats, rabbits, herons, fish, and insects. Also they can live up to 60 years. Eagle owls are nocturnal which means they are usually active at night. They can be found in the taiga,farmlands,steppes,semi-arid areas, and grasslands.
The third animal on this list is the fennec fox.
Tumblr media
They are 35 to 40 centimeters long and weigh 1.6 kilograms. They mostly eat grasshoppers, locusts, small rodents, birds, and eggs. Also they can live up to 11 years. Did you know that when startled they can produce a musky smell from the tip of their tail? It's not the most pleasant of facts but you gotta deal with it anyway. And they also have extra fur on their feet to keep them cold when it's hot and hot when it's cold.
The fourth animal on this list is kangaroos.
Tumblr media
They can grow to be 3 to 8 feet tall and weigh 47 kilograms. They mostly eat grasses, shrubs, leaves, moss, fruit, and flowering plants. Also they can live up to 27 years. Did you know that kangaroos are left handed? Well you know now. They're also known to drown their enemies. You'd best not mess with a kangaroo knowing that they are not afraid to back down from a fight.
And last but not least, red pandas.
Tumblr media
They are 56 to 62 centimeters long and weigh 3.7 kilograms. They mostly eat bamboo, acorns, berries, grasses, grubs, mice, lizards, chicks, and eggs. Also they can live up to 13 years. They secrete a waxy substance from their tails, which they use to mark their territory. And they can also climb trees.

honeymilk the spectacled flying fox, january 2022
first art doll i've made that incorporates clay and i'm so proud of her!! it's hard to tell here but i used leather-textured clay which works really good for bat skin. the patagium was definitely the hardest part, couldn't find a great fabric for it but she certainly turned out fine anyway :P
ingredients: wool, polymer clay, acrylic paint, wire, fabric, rocks (for weight), super glue

Allaster Constancia is a vampire inspired by the Spectacled Flying Fox. A budding botanist and dandy freshly moved to the town of Gearhorse Gulch from Queensland, he doesn't know much about the field yet and is hoping to broaden and legitimize his research by collecting and describing the most dangerous flora in the desert. He simply MUST have this for his menagerie.

In a corner of the study, you find a piece of scrap paper between the pages of a sketchbook. On it is a simple pencil portrait of Mr Pages, his eyes colored with yellow oil pastel. He is wearing pince-nez, and his mouth sports a slight grin.
