Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Head Of Joaquín Murrieta’ On Prime Video, Where A Mexican-American War Deserter Tries To Pay Back His Comrades
The United States’ push west in the 19th century has been depicted in a number of shows in recent years, generally from the perspective of the Americans who are doing the pushing. The picture isn’t as favorable as we saw in our history books, but the Americans aren’t seen as an outright enemy, either. In a new Mexican series, the Americans are the enemy, for both national and personal…

These are super wines. Say what you want about Arizona wines… you need to stop rolling your eyes until you’ve tried these. They are not the TOOL versions everyone equates with wines from the region. Not even close. They are actually GOOD. Not burnt, not sacrificed to the over-ripe gods, not selling out to the *bigger-is-better* dolts. Perfect Grenache nuance: light and thin and pinot-esque…

my favorite line: "it's nice to be nice to the nice" is a phrase that has been said in my household for YEARS well before i started watching mash because my mom says it all the time (i was SHOOK to learn she stole it from frank burns, which she found very funny)
my favorite ridiculous storyline: every single klinger stunt/escape attempt is so good—especially the attempted flight and him dressing up as the statue of liberty—but i think the entire adam's ribs plot is incredibly endearing, a good reflection of the ways in which the war is affecting hawkeye emotionally, and also incredibly funny
i can pick one of the write-off characters to stay on the show and develop, the others’ roles don’t change. who am i picking? steve newsome! i remain impressed at how effectively wilcox, reynolds, and koenig were able to fit a clear character arc into less than twenty five minutes of screentime for this character, and it would have been interesting to see what it would have looked like to see that arc stretched out over, say, half a season's worth of episodes
my favorite cast member writer and/or director (ex. directed by alan alda): the easy answer is of course alan alda (and obviously well deserved) but i have to give mclean stevenson props for "the trial of henry blake," which is one of the best episodes of season two and also includes one of my favorite sections of dialogue in the whole show, which is the part of the scene that begins with "i was just trying to help" and concludes with "i never claimed to be a junior general macarthur. look, i'm a doctor, and i try to patch up wounded kids and run a hospital"; that to me hits the nail on the head of what the core of henry blake is, and mclean stevenson just got it

So I was having a conversation over on @moonhze ‘s discord server about the whole big conversation about diversity in sims stories, the fear people have of making mistakes, and about the very intricate ways each and every one of us show up in the world, the way that nobody else on earth could articulate YOU.
And I had an idea.
My idea involves all of us and it involves making a database of adoptable story characters. The basic idea is that you create a character(or characters) based on your lens, a perspective only you can truly show, and provide a creator with everything they would need to represent that character.
For example(and this isn’t my lens but just for the sake of example) my character is Steve Wilcox, he’s white, transmasc and hard of hearing. In Steve’s sheet I’ll explain to you the trials he found in the process of transitioning in a small town, I’ll explain the process of getting a hearing aid, I’ll explain what it feels like to see in the mirror who you see on the inside, and I’ll explain which aspects of his appearance cannot be changed. All of these things are from MY perspective, and may not be true of others in similar situations. This perspective is not universally true and shouldn’t be taken as such.
(as a note, the character you make does not have to be your personal story, just a character whose experiences you can speak to with confidence)
Now, Steve is all packed up with all the information you might need to write this character well. And when you get him you’ll change his name, you might make him blond instead and make him a teenager, but you have everything you need to understand how Steve shows up in the world.
The hope with this project is to not only encourage storytellers to incorporate more diversity, but to give them the tools to do so and a better understanding of what makes a character like this tick from someone who sees the world through that lens. No two characters are ever the same; no two people who look similar live the same lives or experience the world the same. It also allows storytellers to browse the intricacies of different people, and they may not take a whole character, but they may have a character whose story aligns with yours and would be made more human by utilizing aspects of your offering.
You can submit a character anonymously, with or without a design, or you can ask to have another creator make a design for you based on your guidance. Your character, once out in the world, can be adopted by anyone and brought into their story, hence the importance of expressing which aspects cannot be changed in that process.
At the moment it’s just an idea I’m toying with but I’d love your thoughts and feedback on it. The purpose is to make a space where when a creator is looking to add a certain character to their story, they can see how that person might live and show up in the world, how their unique experience shapes them, and how to represent different people from the perspective of those that know them.

WELCOME TO MY SUPER AWESOME 100 CHARACTER BATTLE!!
this bracket has 100 of my favorite characters in it (i have plenty more i just couldn’t fit them :’))
how the format works:
- the first rounds will consist of four characters up against each other, the two that have the most votes move on to the next round
- in the second rounds, the next four will go head to head (the two that win from one team and the two that won from the other) and one character will advance
- the next round will have the next two battle (the one that won from one team and the one that won from the other team) and one will advance
- the round after that will be the same as the last one except this one will decide the winner of that division, who will win?? who knows!
each poll will last for around one week, so you have plenty of time to vote for your favorite characters!
(i think it would also be funny if i gave trophies to the character with the least amount of votes overall and the character with the most votes overall)

I've heard some homophobic people say that now it's popular to support people and our church members are taking the easy way by not calling gay people to repentance. I don't see it that way and wondered what you think when people say that
I wouldn't say it's "popular" or "taking the easy way" for a Mormon to be affirming of queer people and supportive of their full inclusion in the LDS Church.
In 2023, professors still can lose their jobs at the church's BYU schools if they stray too far from the LDS Church's homophobic and transphobic teachings despite what the science and consensus is in their fields. Members who post support on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media can expect pushback from other members.
While our church leaders may have softened their rhetoric and made some changes, such as allowing people to keep their temple recommends even if they support gay marriage, the core beliefs on these topics haven't changed much. So no, I wouldn't say it's "popular" in the LDS Church to stand for full equality and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.
With that said, certainly it's easier in 2023 than it was in 2013, easier than it was in 2003, easier than it was in 1993, easier than it was in 1983, easier than it was in 1973 for a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be affirming of LGBTQ+ people and to come out of the closet as yourself, at least in the USA.
We can thank queer people like Bayard Rustin, Christine Jorgensen, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Frank Kameny, Harvey Milk, Gilbert Baker, Leonard Matlovich, Steve Endean, RuPaul Charles, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Laverne Cox, Lori Lightfoot and many, many others who were pioneers and moved American society to be more tolerant and accepting of queer people.
And from the LDS Church, a number of individuals have bravely stepped forward and spoken their truth & shared their experience, and that's led to awareness and eventually to increased understanding. People such as R. Joel Dorius, Leonard Matlovich, Paul Mortensen, Stephen Holbrook, Carol Lynn Pearson, D. Michael Quinn, Stuart Matis, Ty Mansfield, Mitch Mayne, Kendall Wilcox, Josh Weed, Dustin Lance Black, Jimmy Hales, Tyler Glenn, Tom Christofferson, Troy Williams, Xian Mackintosh, Laurie Lee Hall, Kris Irvin, Stacey Harkey, David Matheson, Charlie Bird, Matt Easton, Emma Gee, David Archuleta, and many others

Casual Dots — Sanguine Truth (Ixor Stix)
Tumblr media
Sanguine Truth by The Casual Dots
Although it has its origins in heavyweight indie outfits like Bikini Kill, Slant 6, Autoclave and Thurston Moore's band among others, there's an invitingly informal quality to the Casual Dot's Sanguine Truth that speaks more to its appeal than any gestures toward supergroup status.
There’s no getting around the outsize influence Kathi Wilcox and Christina Billotte have had on the underground of the late-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Wilcox, as a member of Bikini Kill and later the Frumpies and Julie Ruin, seized the righteous fury of DIY hardcore's initial confrontations with mainstream authority and conformity and mapped it onto a post–second wave feminism in the form of the riot grrrl movement. Though currently subject to a necessary critical reevaluation, that movement's impact has been undeniable. Billotte, as a member of Autoclave and Slant 6, brought an exacting power and unflappable coolness to the DC scene that would arguably eclipse most of what was being made by Dischord's boys club during the same time.
Thirty-plus years from those salad days (no pun intended), and nearly two decades since their first collaboration, Wilcox and Billotte, joined again by drummer Steve Dore, have created an album that speaks to the commitment and pure love of playing music that can turn a pair of aspiring punks into rock 'n' roll lifers.
Sanguine Truth is rooted in the mathematic post-punk groove that came to define a certain sector of the indie underground circa 1993. And Billotte's powerfully cool vocals on tracks such as "The Frequency of Fear" and "Setting Sunrise" remind the listener of how formidable of a presence she has been in certain corridors of punk over the years. Yet tracks such as "Descending" and "High Speed Chase" weave in a playful surfy twang that recalls the early roots of rock 'n' roll far more than revolutions summer and/or girl style now. While the simple, interlocking, reverb-drenched guitars on the album-closing instrumental "Velvet Fields" deliver a melancholy, almost pastoral timelessness and one of the album's most delicate moments. It’s the soul revamp "You've Got to Live for Yourself," however, that offers the album's most whimsically nostalgic moment in the form of a "Ruler of My Heart" for rebel girls the years over.
Give the origins of those involved here, including coproducer Guy Picciotto, it's understandable to want to project all sorts of importance and weight onto this album, but that would come at the expense of what is so special about Sanguine Truth. This isn't some total break from the past, and there's an unshakable urgency and grit here that comes from decades battling it out in the indie rock trenches. But there's also a familial warmth and a nonchalance that function almost like rewards for those involved. Relax and have fun with it, ya know? And if you the listener have hung in there long enough with these folks, or are even just discovering them now, you should have fun with it too.

Why You Should Check Out Joy Ride (2001)
Well, hey guys! This isn’t my normal thing to write but I was easily convinced by the amazing people in the Freddy/Slasher discord I’m in, and I got someone else into Rusty Nail, too. I figured it was the LEAST I could do since I’ve been super into these films the past while now, if you couldn’t tell.
**I will happily make a post as to why you should watch Joy Ride 2 Dead Ahead, my personal favorite, in a separate post here!
Joy Ride (2001) is a horror thriller film that stars the late Paul Walker as Lewis Thomas, Steve Zahn as Fuller Thomas, and Leelee Sobieski as Venna Wilcox, Lewis’s childhood crush.
Tumblr media
While traveling from California to Colorado to pick up his childhood friend and crush, Venna, Lewis is guilt-tripped into making a stop in Salt Lake City on the way after he learns his estranged older brother Fuller has been arrested yet again. Lewis bails him out and Fuller tags along for the trip. At a gas station, Fuller has a CB radio installed in Lewis' car as ‘an olive branch’ and the two begin listening in on truckers' chatter. Fuller coaxes Lewis into playing a prank on a truck driver that goes by the CB handle Rusty Nail, telling him to pretend to be a woman named Candy Cane.
Tumblr media
Now you can SEE where this is going to get rough, this poor guy is just minding his own business and getting catfished by bored brothers on a road trip, which makes you feel bad that this trucker was pulled into this situation in the first place. It’s a slow build and really pulls you in with the voice of Rusty Nail, who is voiced by Ted Levine, who also plays Buffalo Bill from ‘Silence of the Lambs’ which was a nice touch because his voice is iconic and really draws you in. His actual body actor is Matthew Kimbrough.
Tumblr media
It’s intense and really keeps you on the edge of your seat as you get sucked into the story of these guys really making Rusty look like an absolute fool, and how he’s going to deal with it.
So, they set up a meeting with Rusty Nail in a motel where Lewis and Fuller are spending the night; they tell Rusty Nail that Candy Cane will be in room 17, the room of an asshole of a businessman with whom Fuller had an unpleasant encounter at the check in desk, and the brothers listen from room 18. When Rusty Nail arrives, an argument and sounds of a scuffle are briefly heard.
Tumblr media
The next morning, Lewis and Fuller learn that the police found the businessman on the highway, with his lower jaw ripped off. Lewis admits they were involved and Sheriff Ritter accosts them for their role in the incident, but lets them go. Back on the road, Rusty Nail is heard again on the CB radio looking for Candy Cane. Lewis reveals to him that he is Candy Cane and they were just having a laugh, so Rusty demands an apology, but Fuller just blatantly insults him instead. Rusty Nail then notes they should get their taillight fixed, indicating he is following behind them.
Already this demonstrates the realistic fear of pissing off the wrong people with the right connections, and you can already feel the unease you get when you’re driving too close to a semi, what if that was amped up ten fold when you’re target by a semi driver who’s been wronged and made to look like a joke. You wouldn’t wanna be driving on that highway anymore.
Tumblr media
Rusty Nail then shows up in his truck and, as he slowly crushes Lewis's car against a tree, Fuller hysterically apologizes. Rusty Nail drives away, declaring his actions to be simply a joke.
“Funny, I was just messing with YOU.”
Believing themselves safe, the brothers arrive at the University of Colorado and pick up Venna. They stop at a motel and, as Lewis falls asleep, Rusty Nail calls his room, revealing he has noticed Venna has joined them.
It has some fun misdirection, which if you’re an avid horror movie fan, you can pick up on early on, but it’s still a super fun film to watch either on your own or with friends. It’s got some funny lines said by the main characters and our beloved driver, Rusty.
It’s really fun to add to the mystery since you never see the driver’s identity until the last ten minutes of the movie, and even then they tried their best to cover his features with shadows and lighting. I love the way they went with this and it adds so much to the viewing like it could be anyone in any truck! You never know!
Tumblr media
The first one is on Hulu right now, but otherwise, you can buy/ rent them on YouTube if all else fails. It is 100% worth it!
I don’t wanna give too much away, all I can say is you should definitely watch it for yourself and see how you like it!
It’s one of those early 2000′s films that did well enough but a lot of people hadn’t picked up on, but it’s criminally underrated and a super fun time!
