My middle school sucked, but was also kinda funny.

Two seperate gas leaks in middle school, white people calling each other the n word, somebody called me the n word with a hard er which was confusing, two people catapulted the contents of their lunch trays at each other and one got carried away like how you would hold a cat and we all laughed, a friend got so fed up with bullying they dumped a nasty mixture of expired milk and other stuff on their bullies and got suspended for three days, one of my substitute teachers was on the sex offender registry...

And in my advanced class (WE WERE SENT HERE TO BRING THE SCORE OF THE SCHOOL UP), a whole discord server tried to get a teacher fired for not responding to emails fast enough (wasn't part of that, very confused), a girl I once punched in the back in an unrelated incident brought the primer of a bullet into school, drilled a hole in her desk, put the primer in the hole, sanded it over, and it exploded on the day I was out to get a thyroid ultrasound in another state, my geometry teacher got cancer and died but the school was too cheap to fix broken stuff in the girls bathroom and too cheap to hire another teacher so all we got was somebody who had to cover 18 other classes and a substitute so we wouldn't burn the school down, there were drug sniffing dogs in our school once, I invoked the geneva convention with my spanish teacher (amazing teacher) to get our class party back after someone typed a bunch of strange stuff on the party signup document, there's so much more I could say.

But yeah I had about 40 mental breakdowns throughout 8th grade alone, so yeah life is better now.

Strangest Things

Kids these days watch shows about kids

who lived in the 80’s, and horror movies

set in the 70’s, enthralled by ordinary people

who lived organic lives and had actual friends

who sat in circles in the dark telling ghost

stories and playing board games and riding

bikes and hiking through woods and hiding

from their parents who couldn’t track them

with GPS, and they didn’t spend their days

and nights staring into tiny digital screens

wondering if anyone liked them, and if you

wanted to confront someone, you had to do it

in person, and if you got lost, you figured it out

on your own, and kids actually went to parties

and drove to the movies and went out after dark

and explored haunted houses and the crazy thing

about it all, and what I really want to tell them

is that they can have all of it right now, and all

they have to do is turn off their stupid phones

and

put

them

down.

My dad likes kids.....a fact for which I am ever blessed.....

And this has led to some memories that I will treasure forever.

But not just interaction between my father and me but also other great moments.

When I was flying out with my parents to my grandfather's funeral, on the first leg, my father was seated across the aisle from a mother and her two young sons. And my mother and I were a few rows back. The older boy was maybe 8 and in a wheelchair while the younger boy was 6 and full of energy.

My dad spent that first flight chatting with the 6 year old, because he likes talking to kids, and it was entertaining for them both. And my dad is used to listening to people explained thier current media obsessions to him. Because at that point he had 26 year of dealing with me.

Which gave the mom some time to rest/focus on her other son.

My dad stayed on the flight after everyone else exited to carry bags for the mom and walked her and her boys to thier gate.

My mother and I followed behind with all our crap.

And I got the utter joy of witnessing the boy in the wheelchair arive at his gate and a airport worker looked at him and said "you must be Ethan?"

To which this little boy in his wheelchair replied "I am Ironman"

And I will treasure the look on that workers face forever.
