may or may not be thinking about the bleach blond boys living in a flat together in college and being grubby little college boys together but its ok cuz they are cute and when one of their boyfriends comes over the place gets tidied up and more stocked with things they need (ex shampoo/conditioner, body wash, soap, toothpaste, healthy food and drinks, etc)

Chikara's Birthday Eve Eve
Haikyuu, Ennotana, future/timeskip fic, established relationship, birthday countdown
Tanaka spends days celebrating Chikara's birthday, despite his initial protest.
There was something in the air.
Excitement. Anticipation.
... Or possibly dread.
Chikara looked at Toshiko, one of the physical therapy assistants, who had been pecking away on her phone for the last 30 minutes.
The phone itself wasn't an issue. They were minutes from closing, all the patients had gone, and Chikara was finishing up his paperwork.
It was the way Toshiko tapped anxiously at the screen, sighing, mumbling, and occasionally groaning as if in pain.
"Is everything okay?" Chikara finally asked as he saved and closed the last file.
Toshiko looked up, her brow furrowed. She sighed again.
"I planned a Christmas Eve date for Mina and I." She chewed on her lip. "I really hope she likes it."
"Why wouldn't she like it?"
"We're not going to the restaurant Mina originally wanted to go to," Toshiko said. "I couldn't get a reservation. But this one has great food and it's closer to the lights display we're going to after. We won't have to walk as far."
Chikara grabbed his bag. "That sounds good?"
Toshiko stood, also gathering her things. She fumbled with her phone as she put on her coat.
"But the first restaurant has a special Christmas Eve menu and Mina really wanted to go."
"If she really likes you," Chikara offered, "then she'll like the date because you planned it."
Toshiko looked doubtful. Chikara guided his distracted coworker out of the office and closed the door.
"Making the effort shows a lot of care on its own."
Toshiko considered Chikara's opinion. She nodded after a moment, releasing her chewed lip.
"I just hope she likes it," she said in a rush. "This is our first Christmas Eve together. You're lucky you're married, Chikara-san."
Chikara looked up from locking the door. He didn't understand where she was going with her train of thought.
"You don't have to worry about romance."
"I don't?"
"Not in the same way! You're married," Toshiko said, stressing the word. "The pressure is already off." She smiled and drove the conversation forward before Chikara could question her logic. "Do you and Tanaka-san have Christmas Eve plans?"
Chikara shook his head.
"No, we don't really do anything on Christmas Eve."
"At all?"
Chikara checked the lock before putting the office keys into his bag.
"No," he said simply. "It doesn't seem necessary."
"Because you're married," Toshiko said with a nod.
Chikara decided to let her flawed hypothesis slide because she seemed much more relaxed than before. Toshiko checked her phone for the 300th time and hurried off towards the bus stop.
"Goodbye, Chikara-san! See you tomorrow!"
"Have a nice time!"
Toshiko waved as she ran, eventually disappearing into the movement of people on the street.
Chikara sent Tanaka a quick message to say he was on his way, the reply quick, warming him against the cold.
'Dinner's ready! Can't wait!!'
Chikara smiled. He did like being married.
"I'm back!"
Their dog Airi was waiting to greet Chikara at the door, wiggling and pacing with excitement as he took off his shoes. She poked her nose into the bag he carried to inspect it. His arrival received no other response, suggesting that Tanaka was somewhere out of earshot.
Airi followed at his feet as Chikara made his way inside.
The bag he carried went in the fridge. He peeked into the pot on the stove, the delicious smell of oden blooming in the kitchen.
Chikara put away his things and changed his clothes before stopping at the dining table.
A gift sat at his seat, the tag bearing only a large number two.
It was true that he and Tanaka usually didn't do anything special to mark Christmas Eve. It was so close to Chikara's birthday that an additional day of celebration didn't seem practical.
Instead, Tanaka spent days celebrating Chikara's birthday, despite his initial protest.
It was difficult to stop Tanaka once he had a plan. He had a history of going overboard for birthdays but his discovery of advent calendars pushed everything to a whole other level.
Chikara considered it a success when he forced Tanaka to downsize from the idea of 25 gifts.
The number of gifts would vary from year to year, never exceeding the maximum of 7 they had agreed on. They ranged from practical to silly, useful to absurd, and Chikara would be lying if he said he didn't adore every single one.
Tanaka seemed to love preparing the gifts which gave Chikara permission to indulge in a little extra attention, if only once a year.
As if summoned, Tanaka pushed through the sliding door, coming in from the terrace with an armful of linens as Chikara touched the gift.
"Chikara!" he said loudly, dropping the laundry on the couch. He rushed over to surround Chikara in a hug. "Welcome back!"
Chikara smiled. "Dinner smells wonderful."
Tanaka beamed at the compliment. He wasn't the best cook but he could do anything that required only boiling.
Tanaka picked up the gift, pressing it into Chikara's hands. "Open it!"
Chikara weighed the small package wrapped in paper. He was curious. There was never any rhyme or reason to the assortment of gifts in the countdown.
Among the gifts this year, he had received pens for work, a gift card to his favorite okonomiyake restaurant, and a novelty shirt that came with a corresponding one for Tanaka to wear. ("It's my birthday" and "I'm his gift”.)
The package could contain truly anything which was part of the fun.
Chikara unwrapped the gift to reveal a picture frame containing two pictures floating in a clear matte.
The pictures were similar but different. They were taken together. The colors were beginning to fade.
They were of he and Tanaka in high school, posing in a photo booth.
"Do you remember this?" Tanaka asked. "I think this was our second date. Saeko found them while she was cleaning out my room."
Chikara nodded. He remembered.
"Look at how young and cute we were," he said after a moment.
Tanaka kissed his cheek.
"You're still cute, Chikara."
Tanaka went off to the kitchen with Airi trailing behind him, leaving Chikara holding the picture frame in his hands. He could hear the sounds of Tanaka gathering things to set the table.
Chikara moved to the bookshelf, seeking a place to put his gift. He rearranged a few things and set the picture frame down among others.
He looked fondly at the pictures. He was sure there was a copy of them pressed between the pages of a book at his mom's house.
He could see the nervousness in their smiles, pressed together in the small space of the photo booth. He couldn’t remember every detail of that day but he remembered how he felt, the anxious excitement of knowing that his feelings were shared even if they were still figuring out how to express them. His gaze moved to their other pictures, to trips and dates, to their wedding, to bringing Airi home for the first time. He could see how they grew together, the nervousness gone, affection, trust, and love taking root in its place.
Chikara considered that maybe Toshiko had made a good point.
Maybe they didn't approach romance the same way.
Romance wasn't about excitement for Chikara any more. He still liked dates and trendy restaurants but it wasn't what made him feel most loved.
For Chikara, romance was reliability.
It was having a partner, not just in love, but in life. It was having someone to share things with, both good and bad. It was having someone he could count on to take care of Airi, to remind him about his umbrella when it rained, to pick up medicine when he was sick.
Someone who made him laugh. Someone who cheered him on.
Someone who still thought he was cute.
Chikara turned from his thoughts to the kitchen when he heard Tanaka shout.
"You bought a Christmas cake?" Tanaka said, carrying bowls and utensils to the table.
Chikara reached out to help him. "It is Christmas Eve."
"You mean Chikara's Birthday Eve Eve."
Chikara shook his head but couldn't stop his laugh. He set the table as Tanaka returned with the pot of oden. When the pot was safely down on the table, Chikara pulled Tanaka into an embrace.
"Thank you for making dinner," he said, kissing Tanaka lightly. He felt Tanaka's hands, still covered with oven mitts, firm against his back. "Thank you for feeding Airi."
Tanaka grinned, crowding Chikara in his arms, eager for more kisses. "Thank you for buying us a Christmas cake."
Chikara hurried to get his words out. It was important to him that Tanaka knew how he felt.
"Thank you for my gift, Ryuu."
Tanaka's expression softened, his smile home to more emotions than even Chikara could count.
"You're still cute too," Chikara added.
Tanaka laughed, bright and loud. Chikara did too, even as Tanaka brought an oven mitt-covered hand to the back of his head. Their laughter faded in favor of a kiss, long and slow, deep and teasing, filled with promise.
Excitement. Anticipation.
And possibly romance.
"You still have two more days of gifts," Tanaka reminded him. He grinned, holding Chikara close. "Wait until you see tomorrow's present."
Chikara smiled. He did love being married.
"I can't wait."

@fractionallyeclectic - Tysm for your adorable tags on these ancient Ennotana artworks of mine! I do think I draw them much better these days, but I still have fondness for these old concepts, and I’m glad these pics still put a smile on other fans’ faces, too. uwu <3

An Ache of Hope
Haikyuu, Ennotana, future/timeskip fic, past relationship, exes to something, nostalgia, hope
Three years after ending their relationship, Chikara sees Tanaka for the first time at a group dinner. He knows it'll hurt to see him. He isn't prepared for how it hurts.
A pain in his chest that aches of nostalgia, regret... and hope.
Also on AO3.
It hurt to look at him.
Chikara stood at the edge of the gathering, watching Tanaka and Nishinoya collide in a full body hug. It was the first time many of them had seen Tanaka in person in almost three years. Three years since he followed his mentor overseas, three years since he moved away from Japan.
Three years since Chikara requested they end their relationship.
Chikara knew it would hurt to see Tanaka. He'd been preparing himself for this night.
He hadn't expected exactly how it would hurt.
He thought it would hurt like an old injury, aggravated by a handshake or a hug, like those moments when his knee complained, a remnant of a bad jump block crash in his third year. He thought he would stumble, feel the pain, right himself, and move on.
He hadn't expected the memory to ache.
One by one, the group of their old teammates began to disperse, each of them taking their turns to say good night, to give Tanaka one last hug or punch. Daichi and Sugawara left first; they had a babysitter to relieve. Daichi reminded them to not make too much noise in the neighborhood as they walked away. Yamaguchi, Tsukishima, Narita, and Kinoshita left shortly after; they had trains to catch. Kinoshita threw his arms around Tanaka, the momentum causing the souvenirs Tanaka had brought for everyone to swing wildly. The bag would've hit both of them if Narita hadn't stuck out his hand to catch it.
Asahi hung around until Nishinoya was done relaying the details of his last trip to Tanaka. They hugged again, dragging Asahi in too, Nishinoya's and Tanaka's hands latching onto the others' arms like vices. Then they left, waving goodbye until they turned away from the streetlights, out of sight.
Only Chikara and Tanaka remained.
It hurt to look at him.
Tanaka had grown in their time apart, physically, mentally, emotionally. There was no way to prove the last two but Chikara could tell by the way he held himself, by how he chose to present himself to the world. Tanaka had let his hair grow out, something he spent years fighting after high school. It was still short compared to someone like Asahi or Kinoshita but there was length, a short, messy crop of hair in Tanaka's natural color.
He seemed comfortable with it and, by extension, comfortable with himself.
Chikara felt an ache overtake his chest, part nostalgia, part regret, part desire.
It was not unlike the feeling that washed over him on his most recent trip to visit his grandma in Tokyo. He offered to take her to her favorite restaurant, a place they had been going to since he was a child. She told him the restaurant had closed and Chikara experienced a strange rush of emotions.
A fondness for the time they'd had, guilt over not making the best of that time, and a naive want to somehow go back.
He didn't know how much he would miss it until it was gone.
Tanaka turned to him, lit by a combination of restaurant light, streetlight, and moonlight.
"Hey," he said.
Chikara rehearsed the word in his head, aiming for casual. "Hey."
Tanaka took a few steps towards him until they stood a respectable distance apart, like commuters waiting for the same train.
"I feel like we didn't get to talk a lot."
"Everyone wanted to talk to you," Chikara shrugged.
Tanaka broke out into a grin, the sheepish one reserved for compliments to his spikes, or looks, or karaoke singing. "There isn't much to tell."
"You live abroad," Chikara said. "We all want to hear about that."
Tanaka shook his head. "I came to visit because I wanted to see you. All of you," he said, adding the clarification quickly. "I want to hear about what's happening with you."
The unclarified statement hung in the air, so Chikara answered it literally.
"Nothing's happening with me."
"Your job?" Tanaka asked.
"I'm still at the same clinic. I don't have enough experience yet to be promoted."
Tanaka nodded to show he understood. "Your family?"
"My mom's still working. She's getting close to retirement but it's still a few years away." Chikara smiled, thinking about his brother. "Touma goes to school in Tokyo."
Tanaka perked up. "He passed the entrance exam?"
Chikara nodded. "Easily."
"I knew he would," Tanaka said, smiling in Chikara's direction. "You're both so smart."
Neither the smile nor the statement was meant for Chikara but the sentiment got stuck in the ache in his chest. He had to look away, his gaze falling to the ground, his shoes, the package in his hand.
"Thank you for the omiyage," he said.
"They're just cookies."
"I appreciate it."
Silence crept in, tense but not total, the sounds of the restaurant behind them and the cars at the end of the street attempting to fill the space between them. Chikara's head stayed down. He couldn't see Tanaka and he had long since lost his ability to sense what he might be doing.
Tanaka spoke into the night. He'd always been better at filling the space.
"Are you doing anything now?"
Chikara lifted his head slowly, cautiously. "No. Why?"
Tanaka shrugged. "I had four beers," he said by way of explanation. "I was going to ask if you knew a good place to get coffee around here. I could use some before I take the train back to my parents' house."
Many of them lived in different parts of the city now. Tanaka's parents' house was about an hour away.
"That's a good idea," Chikara said. He couldn't stop his smile. "You don't want to fall asleep and miss your stop."
"One time!" Tanaka said loudly, thrusting his hand toward Chikara's face. "That happened one time!"
"You woke up in Mito!" Chikara laughed.
"Mito is very nice in the spring!"
Chikara laughed, the sound loud to his own ears, the volume only growing when Tanaka joined in, amusement breaking through his annoyance. They laughed in a way that felt painfully familiar, a simple unfiltered act of joy that had accompanied them throughout the years as they became teammates, friends, and then lovers. Chikara never laughed more than when he was with Tanaka.
He missed that suddenly, desperately.
He missed who he was when they were together, the person he let himself be.
He missed Tanaka, who he'd been and the person he had become.
Tanaka put a hand on Chikara's shoulder to steady himself, too caught up in his laughter to notice the nostalgia, regret, and desire whirling within Chikara.
A fondness that hadn't faded.
Grief for what they'd lost.
And a deep yearning for what they might be again.
Chikara watched Tanaka as his laughter settled, still joined at shoulder and hand, closer than they'd been in years. He waited to resume the conversation.
"Do you still want to get coffee?" he asked.
"Yeah, sure," Tanaka said easily. He noticed his hand then and pulled it away. "If you have time."
Chikara nodded. "It's fine. I'm off tomorrow."
Tanaka thrust one arm into the air. "Lead the way."
Chikara started walking away from the restaurant and towards the main street. Tanaka walked with him, matching his stride, keeping a hand's width apart, like classmates changing rooms together between subjects.
They stopped when they reached the street. They were only a block away from one of Chikara's favorite cafes.
"You want my recommendation?" he asked.
"I trust you," Tanaka said with a nod. "You always make good decisions. Mostly," he clarified, nudging Chikara with his elbow. "Not when it comes to letting this awesome prize – a.k.a. me – go, but in general, I trust your decisions."
Chikara stared at Tanaka for a moment, stunned by his candor. Tanaka was completely guileless, lacking any trace of ill will or resentful feelings. He was as open and inviting as he'd been when he confessed at seventeen.
It made Chikara ache with hope.
"Even I make mistakes," Chikara said, being careful with every word.
"Everyone makes mistakes, Chikara," Tanaka said. "What matters is being willing to try again."
Tanaka smiled slowly, cautiously.
The sentiment and the smile meant entirely for Chikara.
He couldn't look away.
"When did you become so smart, Ryuu?" Chikara asked, struggling to rein in his hope.
"They put fluoride in the water in America," Tanaka said, breaking out into a grin when Chikara laughed. "I think it's that."
Chikara shook his head, amusement and anticipation making him smile. He pointed in the direction of the cafe. They waited for a break in the pedestrians to start walking, staying close together on the busy sidewalk.
"That's not how fluoride works," Chikara said.
"I'm pretty sure that's how it works," Tanaka said with confidence.
Chikara laughed again, letting it spill out of him without restraint. Tanaka carried on, doubling down on his ridiculous claims, pursuing a cycle of nonsense and laughter that continued all the way to the cafe.
They walked in together, side by side, their arms brushing against each other accidentally on purpose as they waited to be seated.
Like friends embarking on the new frontier of a first date.
Or exes being willing to try again.

Happy Tanaenno Day~ (5/6)!
I...got very busy this week, but not so busy that I couldn't daydream about the OTP!!! Since I'm a day late and still really digging this sketch and AU, have the finished sketch of human Ennoshita being rescued by shark merman Tanaka, who's very excited to meet at last the pretty cameraman he's been spying along the shoreline recently~ (Tanaka is also v, v bad at listening to Noya and Kinoshita when they remind him not to get involved with humans, but y'know.) More to come as I work on this piece~ asdfghjkl they are clearly not my only mermay thoughts either hALP 🫠 | Done in Clip Studio Paint.
