My feelings about the staff meeting were 100% spot-on, and it turns out that the staff meeting was, in fact, about ME!!!
#ranntics#a 15 minute bitchfest about how ''people have been calling out when they don't have enough sick time to cover their missed days'' i.e. ME#then a 10 minute vent about how some teachers will bleach toys and set them out to dry and then leave them over the weekend#and then call out sick so the poor assistant manager who was subbing in the room had to put them all away 😭 which was so stressful for her#I know the first part was about me bc after the meeting my CA approached the manager and apologized for being out (her kids have been sick)#and the manager said ''it wasn't about you it was about LeeAnn calling out for the hell of it 🙄''#I HAD COVID AND FLU SYMPTOMS. FUCKING SHOOT ME.#apparently her issue is that I text her ''I am feeling unwell and will not be in tomorrow'' instead of a list of symptoms#so she thinks I'm lying#.....but like. if I'm lying it is just as easy to type ''vomiting all night sorry can't come in''#to me sending her a list of symptoms and just saying ''feeling unwell''are the same thing. if she had an issue she could have told me#instead of wasting the valuable time of 20+ other people to vent about it to a group.#oh and the bit about toys being left out was too specific to be about anyone else bc I'm the only person who cleans their goddamn toys#and mine was the only classroom she had subbed in this week#they had both of these talking points typed out and printed on an agenda that they passed out to everyone in the meeting.#y'all both have offices. we could have talked in there.#they don't like confrontation so they hold an ENTIRE MEETING WITH EVERYONE JUST TO TALK SHIT ABOUT ME?? LADIES.

A woman has been found guilty of handing over a three-year-old British girl for female genital mutilation (FGM) during a trip to Kenya, in the first conviction of its kind.
After a trial at the Old Bailey, Amina Noor, 39, was convicted of assisting a Kenyan woman to carry out the procedure in 2006. The conviction, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years, is the first for assisting in such harm under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003.
The only other successful prosecution under the act was in 2019 when a Ugandan woman from Walthamstow, east London, was jailed for 11 years for cutting a three-year-old girl.
Campaigners said the verdict showed that the introduction in 2015 of mandatory reporting of suspected FGM was working.
The senior crown prosecutor Patricia Strobino hailed Noor’s conviction, saying: “This kind of case will hopefully encourage potential victims and survivors of FGM to come forward, safe in the knowledge that they are supported, believed and also are able to speak their truth about what’s actually happened to them.
“It will also send a clear message to those prospective defendants or people that want to maintain this practice that it doesn’t matter whether they assist or practise or maintain this practice within the UK or overseas, they are likely to be prosecuted.”
Strobino added: “Part of the challenge of this type of offence is the fact that these types of offences occur in secrecy. Within specific communities within the UK, although these offences and practices are prevalent, it is often very difficult to get individuals to come forward to explain the circumstances of what’s happened to them because there was a fear that they may be excluded or pushed away or shunned, isolated from their community.”
Previously, the prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said Noor travelled to Kenya with the girl in 2006 and while there took her to a private house where the child was subjected to FGM.
The crime only came to light years later when the girl was 16 and confided in her English teacher at school.
When spoken to, the defendant said she thought the procedure was just an injection and that afterwards the girl was “happy and able to run around and play”. But when examined in 2019, it emerged that the girl’s clitoris had been removed.
Noor appeared “shocked and upset” and said that was not what she had thought was going to happen, Heer said. According to an initial account, Noor described going with another woman to a “clinic” where the girl was called into a room for a procedure.
The defendant said she was invited in but refused because she was “scared and worried”. Afterwards, the girl appeared quiet and cried the whole night and complained of pain, according to the account.
In a later police interview under caution, Noor denied that anyone had made threats against her before FGM was done to the girl.
Heer said: “She was asked whether, when she arrived at the clinic or even before then, she felt she did not want it to happen. She said: ‘Yeah I thought about it but then, you know, got it done.’”
Jurors were told the defendant was born in Somalia and moved to Kenya at the age of eight during the civil war in Somalia. She was 16 when she came to the UK and was later granted British citizenship.
The defendant described what had been done to the girl as “Sunnah”, meaning “tradition” or “way” in Arabic, and said it was a practice that had gone on for cultural reasons for many years.
Giving evidence in her trial, Noor, from Harrow, in north-west London, said she was threatened with being “cursed” and “disowned” within her community if she did not take part. She told jurors that the threat gave her “pain”, adding: “That was a pressure I had no power to do anything about.”
The alleged victim, who is now 21, cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Nimco Ali, an FGM survivor who founded the Five Foundation, a global partnership to end the cutting of girls, welcomed the verdict.
She said: “It is incredible that the mandatory reporting by teachers and healthcare professionals – that we have fought hard for – is starting to pay off. A girl was obviously failed. She was let down by the system but she got some form of justice today thanks to the policies that we now have in place.”
She added: “We have to address FGM in the UK and everywhere by working together to address the root causes of the issue.”
Research in 2014 estimated that 137,000 women and girls are affected by FGM in England and Wales. Ali said this estimate needed updating urgently.

Books, Pies, and Roommates | @seidenapfel Rating: Explicit Word Count: 27,731 Main Tags/Warnings: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Two Person Love Triangle, Idiots in Love, Professor Castiel (Supernatural), Professor Dean Winchester, Mechanic Dean Winchester, Bakery Shop Owner Gabriel (Supernatural), Friends to Lovers, blink and you miss a minor mention of Rowena MacLoad/Sam Winchester, Fluff and Humor, Fluff and Smut, Misunderstandings, Mutual Pining Summary: Everything seemed easy when Castiel landed a job in Lawrence as a literature professor at KU. He even found a place to stay with his cousin in Topeka. But the daily commute quickly gets on his nerves and he begins looking for a room in town. When he finally lucks out on a house, it comes with a catch. His mysterious landlord/housemate works and lives in Topeka during the week, and will only be at home for the weekend while Castiel is back at his cousin’s to honor a promise he made. When Dean walks into his favorite pie shop, the new sales assistant takes his breath away. Steve is gorgeous, and part of the owner’s family. Dean doesn’t even mind that he picks up Gabriel’s stupid moniker for him. After all, Deano has one syllable more, and Dean will do anything to hear Steve’s voice just a little bit longer. Though, as breathtaking Steve might be, he isn't Angel. If only Dean's book-loving best friend weren't a mystery in himself — a guy who Dean has only met online, but who has slowly taken his heart away. And it seems that Dean isn't alone in his feelings. When the lines blur and fantasies merge three guys into one, disappointment and heartbreak seem to be inevitable.
Dear Western Red Cedar #2409 | @mittensmorgul Rating: Mature Word Count: 63,433 Main Tags/Warnings: Two Person Love Triangle, Park Ranger Dean Winchester, Librarian Castiel (Supernatural), Writer Dean Winchester, idiots to lovers Summary: For a decade, Dean had been living his dream life in Montana as a national park ranger. When Sam and Eileen followed him there a few years later, he had no idea how to tell them about his side gig as the author of a wildly popular series of novels loosely based on his own experiences. Well, minus the monster hunting. He never expected them to become bestsellers—or potentially a tv series, if his agent could only convince him to out his real identity. While Dean's also writing his latest bestseller on a deadline, a misunderstanding and his own social ineptitude leave him completely cut off, aside from his new pen pal who Dean only knows as Bluebird. Cas had spent the last two years desperate to hold Dean’s attention. Right when he felt they might be getting somewhere, Dean was called away on an emergency. Of course he had to go and lament about his troubles to a random tree, thanks to a distracting plaque inviting the public to participate in a new town project. To his surprise, he seems to hit it off— completely anonymously of course— with Western Red Cedar #2409. Through a ridiculous series of coincidences, it could be the best thing that ever happened to either of them.

Remus Lupin x reader
pairing: !professor Remus Lupin x !professor reader
Word count: ca. 1600
Warnings: brief mentions of deceased mother, Remus slightly angsty, fluff ending
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Hogwarts school year was starting today, the giddy students having lively conversations with each other, exchanging their summer stories, and you, a professor of Muggle Studies for several years, who had become acquainted with many of the staff members, particularly Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, was sat at the teachers' table enjoying the familiar atmosphere here at Hogwarts. You shared a unique bond with Severus, stemming from your mutual interest in Muggle literature. It was a cozy night in the Great Hall, and you were discussing a Muggle novel Severus had ironically recommended at the end of last year.
"I can't believe you enjoyed it," Severus remarked, a hint of surprise in his tone.
You chuckled and took a sip of your tea. "It has its own charm, Severus. You should give it another chance."
Before he could respond, Headmaster Dumbledore rose to his feet, and the room fell into a hushed silence.
In his speech, Dumbledore introduced the newest Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Remus Lupin. As the name left his lips, you noticed Severus tensing slightly. It was a subtle reaction, but it did not escape your notice. You glanced down the table and spotted an unfamiliar face, having a rather sheepish look adorned on his face.
After dinner, the heads of houses followed their students to their respective common rooms, leaving some teachers behind, including you. The group of teachers gathered around in a small circle, each taking turns introducing themselves to the new professor.
When it was your turn, you couldn't help but feel at ease with Remus. There was a warmth to his smile and an openness in his eyes that drew you in. The conversation quickly turned into lighthearted banter, with Dumbledore having told Remus about your "obsession" with tea, thinking you'd get along well. His presence was both calming and intriguing, and you couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity about the man who was now your colleague.
In the days that followed, your fondness for Remus grew. You looked forward to your daily interactions with him, sharing stories and experiences from your school days at Ilvermorny, where you had attended school. You talked about your childhood, explaining that you had grown up mostly in the Muggle world after your witch mother had passed away when you were young. It was your Muggle-loving father's influence that had led you to teach Muggle Studies.
Remus, too, shared stories of his past, and you discovered that you both had a deep appreciation for Muggle music, literature, and general culture. The connection between you two was undeniable, and your conversations became a highlight of your day.
One evening during tea in Remus' office, you mentioned your meetings with Severus, where the two of you would discuss Muggle literature. You suggested that Remus might join your discussions sometime, but his reaction was hesitant.
"I don't think that's a good idea," Remus admitted, his eyes troubled.
His response was a reminder of Severus' peculiar behavior, and you couldn't help but wonder what had transpired between the two of them in the past. You respected Remus' boundaries, deciding not to push the issue and directed the conversation in another direction.
A few days later, you found yourself in Severus' office, having offered to assist him with a potion. The thought of Severus's mysterious tension toward Remus was beginning to gnaw at you, and you couldn't help but ask what was bothering him.
"Severus, what's bothering you about Professor Lupin?" you inquired, not wanting to create conflict but genuinely curious.
Severus sighed, his dark eyes intense. "You should stay away from Lupin, y/n. He's not who you think he is."
You furrowed your brow, caught between your loyalty to Severus and your budding friendship with Remus, torn between trusting your friend and not seeing how the kind and gentle Remus could be anything other than what he appeared. "Severus, he seems like a very kind person. I can't imagine why you feel this way."
A tense silence hung in the air, and it was clear that Severus was grappling with his own emotions. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and strained. "He and his dunderhead friends tried to kill me."
Your heart raced at Severus' revelation and you recoiled in shock, unable to comprehend what had led to such a drastic act in their past.
Feeling conflicted and desperate not to lose the relationships with your two friends, you decided it was time to confront Remus. You couldn't allow your friendships to unravel due to an unspoken and unresolved conflict, you simply couldn’t imagine such a kind soul being able to do something so gruesome.
One evening, you found yourself in Remus' office, the two of you sitting in comfortable chairs by the fireplace, sharing stories from your past. You were drawn to the kindness in Remus' eyes, and as you spoke, you revealed your knowledge of Severus' behavior, his animosity toward Remus.
Remus' expression darkened as he hesitated, but he decided to open up to you, an act of trust that made your heart pound with affection. "I have a condition, y/n, a condition I can't control," he began, his voice tinged with vulnerability. "I'm a werewolf, and it's the reason Severus and I have such a complicated history."
You listened intently as Remus recounted the night when Severus had discovered his secret, a night when his former friend Sirius Black decided it would be a hilarious prank to convince Severus to come to the Shrieking Shack without the knowledge of the young werewolf, a night that almost ended drastic.
Moved by Remus' story and astounded by Sirius' reckless behavior, you showed no signs of distrust toward Remus. Instead, your empathy for his whole being only grew stronger. After the confession, the conversation took a lighter turn, filled with laughter and shared anecdotes.
As the evening came to a close, it was time for bed. You thanked Remus for his trust and told him that you were there if he ever needed anything. The hug that followed was more intimate and longer than one would expect between two friends, and you left his office with a smile on your face.
The following day, you sought to mend things with Severus. He agreed, albeit hesitantly, to accept your friendship with Remus. It was a small step toward reconciliation, and you hoped that, with time, the wounds of the past could begin to heal.
During one of your evening strolls around the castle, past curfew, you stumbled upon Remus taking a quiet walk as well. The moonlight bathed the castle in a soft glow, the full moon drawing closer and you could only imagine the emotions Remus must be feeling. The both of you decide to continue your once seperate strolls together and your fingers brushed against each other as you walked side by side, neither of you being brave enough to just hold the other‘s hand.
As you reached the Whomping Willow, Remus turned to you, a hint of vulnerability visible in his eyes. "There's something I want to show you."
Intrigued, you agreed, and he raised his wand, freezing the violent branches of the tree. Then, taking your hand in his, he led you toward the secret passage that led to the Shrieking Shack.
While the two of you looked around the abandoned building, Remus shared the story of his school days, the secret of the Animagi his friends became, and how his friends had taken on the risk to protect him during his transformations. It was a tale of loyalty, friendship, and sacrifice. Inside the Shrieking Shack, you sat down on an old sofa, hands still intertwined, gazing into each other's eyes.
As the conversation deepened, the space between you seemed to disappear, your fingers remaining intertwined , Remus couldn't help but open up about the doubts and guilt that had plagued him for years.
"I've always felt so guilty, y/n," he confessed, his eyes filled with guilt and sadness. "They risked everything to become Animagi to protect me during my transformations. They went to great lengths just to ensure I was safe, and I've never felt like I deserved it."
Your heart ached for Remus as he laid bare his inner turmoil. You tightened your grip on his hand, offering him a comforting and understanding smile. "Remus, you are more than worthy of the love and care your friends showed you. What they did, they did out of love and loyalty. They saw the goodness in you, and they believed in it, even when you struggled to see it in yourself."
Remus' eyes glistened with unshed tears, and you continued, your words filled with conviction. "You're not defined by your condition, Remus. You're a kind, compassionate, and incredibly intelligent person. You have so much to offer the world, and it's time you start believing in yourself the way your friends did."
Moved by your words and the emotions that had welled up within you, Remus couldn't fight the urge any longer. He leaned in, capturing your lips in a kiss that was both tender and passionate. Pulling away slightly, Remus apologized for kissing you, fear of rejection evident in his eyes, accompanied by a hint of longing. But you silenced him by pulling him close once more, letting your hearts speak the words that had remained unspoken for far too long. You wanted him to know that he deserved love, that he was worthy of the affection you were feeling for him and you showed it with the emotions you poured into many shared kisses that night.
The night turned into morning, and as you made your way back to the castle, fingers intertwined, you couldn't help but grin at the young professor, thinking about what the future possibly holds for the two of you
Summary: It's 2005 when things go to hell. Well. They go to hell for everyone except Dean, ‘cause he was ready for it. Well. He was ready for the apocalypse, not for the gorgeous man who fell into his life, quite literally. OR a Destiel rewrite of Bill and Frank's love story as shown on HBO's 'The Las of Us episode 3: Long Long Time' that uses elements of both universes.
Keep reading for an short excerpt:
It’s late morning and Dean is working on one of the fire-throwing traps that lately has been malfunctioning, when the alarm blares in the bunker because one of the hole traps triggered it. Annoyed, because that means that he has to haul up an infected corpse and he’s really not in the mood, Dean picks his favorite rifle, and walks out of the bunker to kill the son of a bitch.
The incriminated trap is only a five minute walk on the North-East side of camp, and close to that gate as well. At least the asshole had the decency to not make Dean walk for too long out of his safe haven. He shuts off the electricity running through the fence and unlocks the gate to go outside, then locks it behind him.
Dean cocks the rifle and raises it to aim before getting to the hole’s edge, when he hears a desperate voice yelling “Wait! I’m not infected!”
Confused, Dean walks the remaining three steps to see who the intruder is.
To be fair, he doesn’t look infected, no. He just looks like the most beautiful man Dean has ever seen. Dark unruly hair with a little bit of gray at his temples and in his long beard, so he’s probably in his 40s or early 50s. Despite the shadow at the bottom of the hole, the man's blue eyes are shining, adorned by crow’s feet, and the laugh lines in his face are still visible under the beard. There’s also a small wrinkle on his forehead just between his eyes. The past three years surely have given the man multiple reasons to furrow.
After two seconds of stunned silence, Dean wears his angry mask, scowling at the stranger from behind the rifle’s viewfinder. It’s not because he wants to see the man’s eyes better, shut up.
Shen’dralar: Ilyssae’s mother was never on fantastic terms with the other Eldre’thalas Highborne, and Ilyssae and her brother kept largely to themselves during those last couple centuries before Dire Maul was abandoned. That being said, some older Shen’dralar may remember seeing Ilyssae in passing, or have even suffered her presence when she was a petulant, brooding youth!
Field Research and Academia: Ilyssae went through a variety of teachers and learning institutions before finally clicking with her mentor Eoselle. Her magic studies these days are mostly independent, but she’s spent enough time in Stormwind, the Azuremyst isle, and Dalaran that fellow wizards and scholars might have worked with her on one thing or another however briefly!
Extended family: Naga, blood elves, high elves, Nightborne, or even the spidery fal’dorei—elves are kind of known for having evolved any which way in the aftermath of the Sundering, and Ilyssae’s family tree is full of holes after millennia of neglect. It’s entirely possible that she has a long-lost relative walking around in a different shape.
Fence-hopper: Although she is technically still an Alliance citizen, Ilyssae distanced herself from the kaldorei after the frosty reception her kind received post-Cataclysm (a decision she’s finally starting to second-guess) and is now working for a trading caravan crewed by oddballs and outcasts from both the Alliance and Horde. Maybe you’re one of her mixed-faction work acquaintances—or maybe you see her as a faction traitor and have a serious bone to pick with her.
Druid…?: Ever since coming back from the Shadowlands with golden eyes (and that’s a whole other story in itself), Ilyssae seems to have a new affinity for natural magic. However, she’s still stuck in the rigid thinking of a mage, so she’s always looking for Druids who have the patience and inclination to help her figure out this new side of her magic.
LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
Sept 21, 2023
The fight over how we conceive of our federal government was on full display today.
The Biden administration announced the creation of the American Climate Corps. This will be a group of more than 20,000 young Americans who will learn to work in clean energy, conservation, and climate resilience while also earning good wages and addressing climate change.
This ACC looks a great deal like the Civilian Conservation Corps established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Democrats in 1933, during the New Deal. The CCC was designed to provide jobs for unemployed young men (prompting critics to ask, “Where’s the She, She, She?”) while they worked to build fire towers, bridges, and foot trails, plant trees to stop soil erosion, stock fish, dig ditches, build dams, and so on.
While the CCC was segregated, the ACC will prioritize hiring within communities traditionally left behind, as well as addressing the needs of those communities that have borne the brunt of climate change. If the administration’s rules for it become finalized, the corps will also create a streamlined pathway into federal service for those who participated in the program.
In January, a poll showed that a climate corps is popular. Data for Progress found that voters supported such a corps by a margin of 39 points. Voters under 45 supported it by a margin of 51 points.
While the Biden administration is establishing a modern version of a popular New Deal program, extremists in the Republican Party are shutting down the government to try to stop it from precisely this sort of action. They want to roll the government back to the days before the New Deal, ending government regulation, provision of a basic social safety net, investment in infrastructure, and protection of civil rights.
Extremists in the House Republican conference are refusing to acknowledge the deal worked out for the budget last spring by President Biden and Republican speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Instead, in order to pass even a continuing resolution that would buy time for Congress to pass an actual budget, they are insisting on cuts of up to 8% on discretionary spending that Senate Democrats, as well as Biden himself, are certain to oppose.
The White House has noted that the cuts the Republicans demand would mean 800 fewer Customs and Border Protection agents and officers (which, in turn, would mean more drugs entering the United States); more than 2 million women and children waitlisted for the WIC food assistance program; more than 4,000 fewer rail inspection days; up to 40,000 fewer teachers, aides, and key education staff, affecting 26 million students; and so on.
House speaker McCarthy cannot corral the extremists to agree to anything unless they get such cuts, which even other Republicans recognize are nonstarters (those cuts are so unpopular that Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News reported today that Republicans are somewhat bizarrely considering changing their messaging about their refusal to fund the government from concerns about spending to concerns about border security).
Meanwhile, the extremists are threatening to throw McCarthy out of the speakership. There are rumors that Republican moderates are considering working with Democrats to save McCarthy’s job, but Democrats are not keen on helping him when he has just agreed to open a baseless impeachment inquiry into the president in order to appease the extremists.
“If you’d asked about two months ago I would have said absolutely,” Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN) told Manu Raju, Lauren Fox, and Melanie Zanona of CNN. “But I think sadly his behavior is unprincipled, it’s unhelpful to the country,” he said.
As a shutdown appears more and more likely, even Republicans acknowledge that the problem is on their side of the House. Until the 1980s, funding gaps did not lead to government shutdowns. Government agencies continued to work, with the understanding that Congress would eventually work out funding disputes. But in 1980 a fight over funding the 1,600-employee Federal Trade Commission led President Jimmy Carter to ask Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti if the agency could continue to operate when its funding ran out. Civiletti surprised participants by saying no.
Four years ago, Civiletti told Ian Shapira of the Washington Post that his decision was about a specific and limited issue, and that he never imagined that politicians would use shutdowns for long periods of time as a political weapon. And yet, shutdowns have become more frequent and longer since the 1990s, usually as Republicans demand that Congress adopt policies they cannot pass through regular procedures (like the 34-day shutdown in 2019 over funding for the border wall former president Trump wanted).
Many observers note that “governing by crisis,” as President Barack Obama put it, is terribly damaging and that Civiletti’s decision should be revisited. Next month’s possible shutdown has the potential to be particularly problematic because there is no obvious solution. After all, it’s hardly a surprise that this budget deadline was coming up and that the extremists were angry over the deal McCarthy cut with Biden back in May, and yet McCarthy has been unable in all those months to bring his conference to an agreement.
Republicans appear resigned that voters will blame them for the crisis, which, honestly, seems fair. “We always get the blame,” Representative Mike Simpson (R-ID), a senior appropriator, told Katherine Tully-McManus and Adam Cancryn of Politico. “Name one time that we’ve shut the government down and we haven’t got the blame.”
Meanwhile, the House extremists continue to push their vision for the nation by undermining the institutions of the government. The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), today held what normally would have been a routine oversight hearing focused on policy, law enforcement, and so on. Instead of that business, though, Jordan and the hard-right Republicans on the committee worked to construct a false reality in right-wing media by attacking Attorney General Merrick Garland over his role in the investigation of President Biden’s son Hunter, begun five years ago under Trump.
Glenn Thrush of the New York Times noted drily that “[m]any of the claims and insinuations they leveled against Mr. Garland—that he is part of a coordinated Democratic effort to shield the Bidens and persecute Mr. Trump—were not supported by fact. And much of the specific evidence presented, particularly the testimony of an investigator who questioned key decisions in the Hunter Biden investigation, was given without context or acknowledgment of contradictory information.”
Instead, Jordan and his extremist colleagues shouted at Garland and over his answers, producing sound bites for right-wing media. Those included the statement from Representative Victoria Spartz (R-IN) that the rioters at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, were actually “good Americans” who brought “strollers and the kids.” Even as both Biden and Garland have prioritized restoring faith in the Justice Department after Trump’s use of it for his own ends, the extremist Republicans are working to undermine that faith by constructing the false image that the Department of Justice is persecuting Trump and his allies.  Their position was not unchallenged on the committee, even within their own party. Representative Ken Buck (R-CO) defended Garland from their attacks, while Democrats on the committee went after the Republicans themselves. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) accused Jordan of making the Judiciary Committee into a “criminal defense firm for the former president.”
Garland, who is usually soft-spoken, pushed back too. “Our job is not to take orders from the president, from Congress, or from anyone else, about who or what to criminally investigate,” he told the committee. “I am not the president’s lawyer. I will add I am not Congress’s prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the American people.”
“We will not be intimidated,” he added. “We will do our jobs free from outside influence. And we will not back down from defending our democracy.”
Soap making
🫧Activity title: Making soap
🫧Duration and time: about 2 hours
🫧Type of activity: creativity
Activity description
With the help of our teacher and lab assistant, we made soaps in our school lab. We mixed olive oil, sodium hydroxide, essential oils and food coloring, and put them in various molds. We waited for them to cool down and were left with dozens of beautiful and colorful soaps, meant to be sold on the Christmas fair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflection
Making these soaps was a very interesting experience, and it was nice to know how an object that I use every day is made. The technical part surprised me with its simplicity and the decorating part allowed a lot of room for creativity. It was, overall, a very fun way to spend a class, and knowing that these soaps would be sold during the Christmas fair, and that that money would be donated to those in need, made it even better and more fulfilling!
Rant about autism.
So I've had it with people who rage against those who point out many autistic people cannot live fully independent lives and are in a very vulnerable position, because I know for a fact that many autistic people are no more independent than a baby. Hear me out.
The first people I ever met with autism were such normal people I was surprised to discover they had autism. One was a friend of mine whose only stereotypically autistic characteristic was his nerdiness and social difficulties, but otherwise he was just like anyone else. Then there was a friend's boyfriend, a man in his 20s with aspergers. And he was a bit more peculiar, but he led a fairly normal life: drove his own car, finished his studies, had a job, and nailed one hell of a girlfriend. And so I acquired the false idea that everyone who had autism were barely different from those who didn't.
And then flash forward a few years. I was hired at a school that only had autistic kids. 0bviously from my friends I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, but it was.
The school had students aged 3-18 and I began my training with 3-5 before working at a 13-15 class (students weren't divided by age but rather, by independence level and skills) covering for another teacher who was out on maternity leave and then, finally, I was properly assigned to a class of students 6-9, so I got to experience a broad range of ages and varieties of autism.
There were a few -very few- kids who fitted my preconceived ideas of autism. They were fully independent, talkative, skilled... they became obsessed with things and could be big nerds, but nothing difficult to deal with. The majority were the total opposite. Kids who if they weren't autistic would be talking, running around, learning Math or Sciences, playing football... but because they had a very severe form of autism, none of that was an option. These kids, and I saw them in all ages between 4 up to 16, couldn't do alone:
Going to the loo (they used nappies and adult assistance).
Preparing some food for themselves, at least a sandwich, without help.
Talk. At all.
Communicate it when they felt unwell.
Play alone.
Play sports (they'd just stand around).
Be trusted to be alone.
Go shopping.
Be left alone with smaller children (due to them communicating feelings in an occasionally aggressive way).
Perform a professional activity.
Read.
Aggressiveness was also a common issue with these children. They're not bad people, but because they can't tell you how they feel, they might just show you. More experienced teachers saw the signs to move away on time, but I was both bitten and punched within my first month on the job. And the later happened by total accident, just because the kid excitedly moving an arm without realising I was nearby.
These kids could also sometimes behave in ways that outside the safe environment of our classroom, would get them in trouble and even arrested. They'd sometimes masturbate, they'd spit, lick things, pull the hair of others, shout, throw themselves on the floor and refuse to move (record was in 9h straight), they might touch others inappropriately, might get very aggressive, and would on occasion pee themselves just for attention (as opposed to those who did it because they weren't able to tell us they needed the loo and yes, we could tell). It sounds like 4 year olds, but the majority of kids I saw do these things were 8, 12 or 14.
Working with these kids also constitute some of the happiest memories of my life. As challenging as they were, it was incredibly satisfying to be able to teach them to cook, to socialise, to healthily communicate emotions, to dance, to fix something broken, to play, to do the grocery shopping and to go to the loo or take care of their period on their own. But we couldn't get so far with everyone. The sad reality is that without more funding and teachers, we could only really help 10% of each classroom. The rest will always need a caretaker. And the saddest part is that many of these kids came from very poor families, or families that were suffering and their suffering affected the kids. One of my students suffered domestic violence, so part of our job was to check for wounds and bruises and be on the look out to call the police if necessary. Another's parents divorced, and this kid was so affected by it they'd drop on the floor out in the street every day on arrival and stay there accompanied by one of us all day, day after day, for two weeks.
I'm not telling you all this to horrify you or scare you away from parenthood or autistic people. I am saying it because there's a huge campaign going on to make it look like autism is always not a big deal, because autistics can always live a perfectly normal life. And I want to make you aware that there are huge amounts of cases where this isn't true. Thousands of autistic people that cannot be trusted to be left online, or with their sexual health, or to care for themselves or others, to have a job, to fend for themselves, to survive without a carer constantly there.
The reason it is so incredibly important to raise the awareness about these other autistic people, is because the misconceptions around them mean that them and their families are frequently ignored in education plans and politics. They don't get the enormous economical help they need, the parents go without psychological support, and we don't have nearly enough schools specialised in autistic kids and fully equipped to help them. Also because people aren't aware that autism can look like this just like it can look like someone with an exceptional IQ, they fear them more. Ignorance means they don't know what to do or how to behave when they meet a child or adult with severe autism. And so they push them away and leave them all alone.
If people had better awareness of severe autism, they wouldn't be afraid of it. They'd know it's manageable and there are techniques to deal with their challenges, and their families don't need you shouting at them in the park, but rather, your infinite understanding, comprehension, empathy. Schools would be better equipped thinking of these kids, bosses trained to maybe have employees severely autistic. And authorities such as police wouldn't cry insanity and madness the second someone behaves odd, but recognise signs of autism and know how to deescalate the situation. I mean imagine being a black man with severe autism in the US, nonverbal, masturbating in the park. The way things are right now, with the massive lack of awareness and racism, chances are you'd be shot dead by the police.
I don't think it's OK to pretend these severely autistic people don't exist or like autism is always just fine. It's not OK to ignore all these people, push them away and shove them in a box where we cannot see them. They need our help. And their families too.
My class among many others decided to join school's geography section this weekend . The plan was to have a relaxing walk through nature , visit the Stričići village and go back to elementary school in Manjača where we had a meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflection
Even though we didn't expect such a demanding route, we still had a great time . The nature was impekable , just as I assumed it would be , and we crossed ways with many animals which bettered the whole experience. I'm glad I took the time to do this since I live in the city and don't encounter dometic animals that often . It also assisted me in getting to know my classmates better. There were times when we all wanted to give up and go back , but our teacher wouldn't let us🙄 , which I'm grateful for. Of course , there were some accidents like , for example me spilling the yogurt we were all gited all over the tote bag we were also gifted😭. When we arrived at our rest point in Stričići cute grannies gave us water or juice , which was encouraging and unforgettable . Not to forget , out of our group me and my friends arrived first at the finish . All in all , though we left our souls on that route , we still had a fantastic time . I hope we redo this next year with even more participants.
