Thunderbolts (1997) #1 Review
I just read the first issue of Kurt Busiek & Mark Bagley’s classic run on Thunderbolts collected in an omnibus that I just bought and dang! This was certainly an incredibly strong start to this series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though I already knew the big plot twist about the supposed new team of superheroes actually being Baron Zeno’s supervillain team the Masters of Evil in disguise, it was incredibly fun to see how the twist was subtly foreshadowed all throughout the issue! Not only are Zemo and the Masters of Evil name dropped during the opening news announcer’s list of threats following the disappearance and apparent death of the Avengers & Fantastic Four during the Onslaught crossover, but one of the villain groups that the Thunderbolts fight in their big superhero debut are the Wrecking Crew, with whom the Fixer/Techno had previous connections with back during his time as a member of the Frightful Four, nearly stating that he can’t fight them because of said associations before Citizen V (aka, Baron Zemo) quickly vocally assumes his reasoning to instead be that its because the Wrecking Crew are too powerful (effectively preventing their cover from being blown during the middle of a fight).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, knowing the twist in hindsight made reading the Thunderbolt’s dialogue even more enjoyable for me since it was fun noticing the double-meanings and lies behind their words in scenes such as their first interview with mainstream news outlets, as Baron Zemo as Citizen V paints his team as merely “volunteers who don’t consider themselves to be heroes” and don’t seek to “usurp the Avenger’s name and record, but rather to gain their own reputation through their actions.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While on the surface “Citizen V’s” words make the Thunderbolts appear to the public as benign and humble concerned citizens who simply seek to help others after the disappearance of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, in actuality they allude to Baron Zeno’s ultimate plan of gradually gaining the trust of the general public and media in order to be eventually sanctioned by the US government just like the Avengers previously were, bringing the Masters of Evil one step closer to world domination.
And even in the first issue we’re already witnessing the seeds of Zemo’s plan beginning to bear fruit, as the Thunderbolt’s opening fights against both the Wrecking Crew and the Rat-Pack (who respectively attempt to destroy the Statue of Liberty and steal property and valuables from civilians who were tragically killed in the Onslaught incident; latter of which is excellent world-building continuity-wise) ends up winning the team even higher approval numbers in the polls than even the Avengers had during their initial debut during the Silver Age (likely due to the public still mourning the recent loss of the Avengers and fearing future supervillain attacks), as well as the team being contacted by an official liaison from the Mayor of New York.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the citizens of New York who just suffered a severe tragedy that caused immense property damage and killed countless civilians and even seemingly their mightiest heroes, the Thunderbolts suddenly arrive on the scene to re-inspire a sense of hope and optimism that now seems to be disappearing in the Marvel Universe. The Post-Onslaught atmosphere honestly gives me a similar vibe to the feelings of despair and sense of unity which defined the post-9/11 era, even though the first issue of Thunderbolts came out in 1997, 5-years BEFORE the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But just like the Post-9/11 era, said-newfound reassurance and strength that the Thunderbolts promise to the public is ultimately proven too good to be true, and is in actuality nothing more than a hollow sham designed to advance evil agendas (in that sense, Baron Zemo’s evil agenda with the Thunderbolts to take over the world in response to the Avenger’s absence bears some unintentional parallels to the George W. Bush Administration using the 9/11 tragedy as an excuse to perpetuate war crimes in the Middle East).
Tumblr media
Like I said, the parallels are definitely NOT intentional since this came out before then, but it’s a feeling that I still I couldn’t help but notice while reading and made Thunderbolts (1997) #1 feel even more poignant and intriguing (especially for a book about a team of supervillains disguising themselves as superheroes)!
So overall, definitely a strong opening for Busiek & Bagley’s Thunderbolts run! One which expertly and subtly fleshes out its creative and unique premise in the span of just a single issue, and makes the reader invested in wanting to see more of how the Thunderbolts will continue to manipulate the public to their favor, as well as explore the interpersonal characterizations and dynamics of the individual supervillains who comprise the team! And I’m particularly excited to see what I think of the individual Thunderbolts members because aside from Baron Zemo this is my first ever exposure to these characters! The one that interests me the most so far is Moonstone/Meteorite (aka, Dr. Karla Sofen), a former psychiatrist turned-supervillain who possesses Danny Phantom-like powers and is a master manipulator of other people’s emotions who first fought Captain America and the Hulk, and according to Anne Carol from the ComicsCollective podcast Moonstone is originally Zemo’s second-in-command before she plays a major role in-relation to many of the other Thunderbolts member’s redemption arcs!

Year of the Alice Day 189
This is my first (and hopefully only) one-year project (which will be only 365 days) and this one is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-themed.
In this pic, Techno Baron is looking at a rose tree and notices that one of the roses is white but has some red paint on it.
Made with Microsoft Paint.
Enjoy! ♠️♥️♣️♦️

came from your feypaul fics which I have all read today.....oh my lord. I feel insane. 1) thank you so much for 'the journey' dnb mix, how have I never heard this before?? omni trio first contact within the first 30 seconds?? yes please! I'm listening to it rn and it's really taking me to another plane of existence....which brings me to 2) your description of the clubs on giedi prime combined with the first chapter of your newest fic is really making me think of some alternate timeline where feyd and paul meet again at another banquet of the great houses, this time on giedi prime as the baron wanted to show off some of the ostentatious harkonnen hospitality, etc...and feyd to paul is like, "how about we get out of this drudgery and go to a real party?" and well. industrial techno clubs and a lot of bad decisions (spurred on by some tablets maybe) ensue...
Ooooooooooh boi, don't do it ur gonna give me IDEAS 😭 (though there may already be some plans for something like that coming up hehehe, u shall have to wait and see)

it's december 9th, meaning today is my 23rd birthday (which is my favorite number!), which means it's time for...
Lew Writes Wrapped 2023!!!
im including anything that happened after my last bday, so we have some works from december as well. this one's a bit of a weird one for the total word count, you'll see why
it's all treebark from my sideblog / alt ao3. i cannot change. i will not change. for these im just gonna specify the relationship that's the main focus bc thats easier than fandom bc all but like one are third life
dandelion wishing
(Dec, 2.4k, treebark, oneshot) (link)
op movie 6 au for dogwarts in which Martyn is the baron and Ren doesn't know he's dead
id actually plotted out a whole third life au for this movie like months prior and really wanted to write it, so i took it for treebark week and focused it just on these two. it's my fave movie of all time and i obvs had to give it to my fave completely dead team <3
i will admit tho. it did make me back search martyns twitter to see if hes ever posted abt watching this movie. bc i know he likes One Piece and i realized this would bring me into the danger zone (he hasnt ever posted abt it if hes seen it)
A Romance Route for the Doomed Villain?!?
(Dec, 5k, treebark, oneshot) (link)
treebark dating sim isekai parody that spiraled out of my control made in a day-long possession
im still baffled by this one. why was the response to this one so insane?? there was smth in the water the day i posted this bro. a 1:2 kudos to hits ratio for the entire first day is literally fucking unbelievable. 70 comments?? what hold did this fic have on you people. i got fic written about this one?? my friends goncharov'd me in front of my face
really fucking fun to write and the insane response was smth im always gonna remember. i appreciate you guys so much
treesekai also turns a year old in a few days!
Until the Angels Realize You're Not One of Them
(Feb, 7.2k, emerald duo, oneshot) (link)
a traitor phil au which was mostly just me talking about all the reasons i love technoblade
this one... wasnt actually written this year for the most part? i didnt want to not acknowledge it, since it's on my ao3 in this year, but i wont be able to count it toward the total
still. traitor phil au my beloved. hearing him say on his stream he and techno wanted to do a betrayal arc made me feel insane bc i already had this written at the time
missing or obstructed
(2022-present, 12.9k, Grian & Ren, ongoing) (link)
post 3L fic about Ren and Grian seeking out closure with a lot of funny little sleep metaphors
same deal as the last fic, i, uh dont think i actually wrote anything new for missing or obstructed this year either? just uploaded chapters i wrote last year,,, i didnt wanna now acknowledge it, but i wont count this in my total later
i miss her. one day ill actually sit down and write more missing or obstructed. in my doc im JUST at introducing Martyn and i havent written it yet
to reach my mangled debut
(Sept, 4.2k, treebark week, ongoing) (link)
it wouldnt be me if i didnt have an execution somewhere in here. another op au!
THIS. I LOVE HER. when rev and i were plotting out the whole storyline for smop renchanting i was begging please give me this scene i need it and i had so much fun writing it. i rlly need to finish soon but i haven’t had time but please. please check out smop. she’s top of my priority list to update
Three-Dog Night
(Sept, 6.7k, treebark week, oneshot) (link)
BIG DOG. beauty and the beast au!
god im so fond of this au. there’s some rlly good scenes written for this and unposted bc i just need to link them together. honestly i think if i took a month and focused it on this fic alone i could fucking finish it but i don’t have the time ;-;
that said i’m so enamored w this au genuinely. o dunno what else to say i just think. puppy
Cover Me In Roses
(Sept, 3.3k, treebark week, oneshot) (link)
lamplight roleswap! put Martyn in a flower pot
i don’t feel as motivated to work on this one when i have lamplight unfinished so it’s lower on my priorities but know i have like an entire arc of this written and unposted. we just have a few paths for this one and i have to decide which one to use
it’s so wild to me lamplight has like. aus. like this isn’t even the only one? a roleswap. that’s insane? it’s wild that you all like lamplight enough i can even get away with this
First Sign of a House Fire
(Sept, 2k, treebark week, oneshot) (link)
i love superhero stories for two reasons: plots about secrets and adapting the characters to give them powers. this had smth fun for both of them
yellow rose isn’t super high on my list of priorities to update (i think the oneshot is interesting on its own) but one day,,,, it’s part of the many aus cherri and i have but it’s the longest for sure. the doc for just this au is like 100k words long on its own. at the time i draft this cherri and i are actively writing smth else for it in another tab. theres like 4 offshoots and im obsessed w all of them. we had to make ocs about this one. i’m excited to eventually add more to this series
actually that’s one of the scenes i’m most excited for and most dreading adding. we made a backstory oc and im SO attached to him and im excited to post a thing out there w him but. ough. whatever cringe is dead i’ll get there eventually and brute force my way into attaching you to our funky little robot guy
also love that this fic forced me to be decided on a docv characterization that i have to stick to. he may be a canon guy to martyn’s vtuber lore but he’s my oc now too
Blindsided
(Sept, 2k, treebark week, ongoing) (link)
pirate au and royal au based on a big secret and also stuffing a guy in a box and it's all stupid dramatic literally what else do you want or need in life
this is my wife. my favorite. my most beloved. blindsided gives me new illnesses and diseases. i have just one scene to write before i can update it and then i can continue unleashing her. god i love this fic the drama of it is SO fun.
the funny thing abt blindsided is i know all the plot chronologically but now how to Present it which is part of why i haven’t continued too much. eventually i will but until then know that one of the scenes im sitting on which has been fully written is one i think about constantly. hopefully when i post it cherri’ll let free the comic she did for it
i actually have the ending of this fic written i just need to get there lmfao. second on my priority list after smop i think
Cradle of the Leviathan
(Sept, 1.5k, treebark week, oneshot) (link)
i just love mer aus man. whats the point of it all if you cant have mer aus. just get a big ol fish
i have the ending of this au written as well and literally so little of the lead up. but this is pretty low on my priorities. i think this one stands just fine on its own. mer aus are nice like that
we actually have a few mer aus but for now i’ll be focusing on this one. i do have a few sweet post story things written for this one. maybe one day i’ll write enough to post em lmao
Lamplight AU
(2022-present, 47k, treebark, ongoing) (link)
renchanting dnd/fantasy au, martyn's a paladin and ren's a lamp
so i started this au last year. my wrapped last year said my total was 20k, so that means this year's total is.... 27k!
and… it was just lamplight’s birthday and i did all my appreciation for the fic and its readers then, but god. i love this fic so much and i love you all who have read it and been so kind about it. the amount of popularity it has makes it a bit nerve wracking to work on, but i still really want to see it finished. i hope to see the bulk of it done by this time next year!
Six Sentence Sunday
six sentence sunday is a challenge where i try to post six sentences i wrote that week every sunday, to keep me writing every week of the year! i do it over on my writing blog, @driflew
i did not keep up on my six sentences,,, i had a lot of sunday fencing tournaments. i did for ~33 weeks this year! thats a pretty good amount! i’ll have to be more on top of it next year tho
unpublished work
the last few years i havent included unpublished work, but with the extreme bulk of it, i wanted to note it down. cherri @/cherrifire and i have been writing a lot back and forth at each other in discord dms this year, and i wanted to include those in my count! bc holy fucking shit is there a lot of them
i didn’t include collab pieces, just pieces i wrote alone. i also only included the renchanting aus i share w cherri and scarian aus i share w flowey, nothing else—no unfinished lamplight or other independent pieces or oneshots, no original fiction for class, nothing. i also missed a few u haven’t moved to docs yet. so i’m lowballing by a few. thousands. of words
the total for those is...... 135k words! there is,,, something wrong with me
total and end notes
our total this year is...
187512 words!
that might be my highest word count yet! because i caught treebark disease. wild.
something really fun about this year to me is i really loved everything i wrote.
if you want to get me a gift or support me on my birthday… maybe try reading my work and reblogging it or leaving a comment! you can find my writing at driflew or skelew on ao3, follow my writing blog at @driflew, or even consider tipping my kofi!
thank you for sticking with me and supporting me this year! i really appreciate it! hopefully i can break 100k next year too!

The Land of Six Kingdoms
(From top right moving clockwise) The Rowe Kingdom, The Blanco Kingdom, Green Castle in Dream Forest, Queen Sollohah of the Siren Isles, High Elves at Dragon Stone
Tumblr media
The six kingdoms make up to the cyberpunk/fantasy world of Dystopian Scramble.
The Kingdom of Rowe is the largest kingdom and spans across Strangerville proper and valley, Techno City, the town of Evergreen Harbor and parts of the Barren.
Tumblr media
These modern citizens believe in embracing both the advancement of technology and the power of the occult. King Alejandro Rowe II welcomes all, no matter their background. During the decade of his reign, many refugees have settled within the borders of the kingdom. Outside of the barren, the king is well liked by his people for his tolerance. But some do question whether his motives are actually pure.
Tumblr media
Ava Delaney, a small town sim moves from Evergreen Harbor to Strangerville Valley in order to the join the Rowe Arm forces. She has dreams of seeing the world. But life on her own is a little bit tougher than she expected.
The Blanco Kingdom is ruled by King Davion Blanco and his heir and nephew, Duke Wyndell Blanco.
Tumblr media
King Davion Blanco's great grandfather was a distant cousin of the Rowe Family bloodline. After being banished from the Rowe Kingdom for attempting to overthrow the sitting king, King Daunte (then Baron Daunte) journeyed west with his followers and settled in the long abandoned frontier town of Moonwood Mills. He soon learned the town was not abandoned but actually was overrun by packs of werewolves who lived under the mountain and in the tunnels under the town.
A bloody war ensued between the human settlers and the packs. It seemed the humans had no chance against the veracity of the wolves. However, the tide did turn when King Daunte made a pact with a powerful dark witch.
Tumblr media
The werewolf packs were massacred to near extinction, and the few survivors escaped to take refuge in other more welcoming kingdoms. Only the most dangerous wolves still live deep in the surrounding forests.
After winning a war against the powerful werewolf packs and their long alliance with the dark witch/necromancer, Baroness Melisandre, many wonder if the Blancos are still human themselves.
Tumblr media
Green Castle in Dream Forest is ruled by Princess Lilliana Wood and her younger brother and heir, Prince Terran Wood. Their half brother Prince Leaveye Wood also lives nearby in his flying steam engine with his shadow guard and travel companion, Ryah Oakensteel. Dream forest is one of the three magical outlands. It is also the only place you may spot an elusive unicorn outside of sylvan glade.
Tumblr media
Green Castle has the strongest ties to the magical realm. Their warriors are fearsome, and their magic is very powerful.
Tumblr media
They have no interests outside of their forest and only seek to protect it. But the High Elves and their dragon fire are always a looming threat. So, they may be convinced to seek an alliance with another powerful kingdom.
Siren Isles is ruled by Queen Sollohah Orchano, whose siren song is the most powerful in the six kingdoms.
Tumblr media
Queen Sollohah rules alone from Sea Stone Castle and will not allow any mermaid to enter the magical hall, not even her sister, out of fear that someone may steal her power. Mermaids and kelpies are free spirits who love to travel the world, fall in love, and very rarely marry. She has two children with Chief Taku who is chief of a nearby island village. As a merman, he is constantly attempting to get her to settle down with him, but Queen Sollohah is too busy with millions of subjects under the sea.
The High Elven Kingdom of Taratosa is ruled by King Elvenore Guerin and his dragon riders.
Tumblr media
King Elvenore's younger brother is Prince Elvon the famous dragon knight and he has two daughters, Princess Nollette and Princess Avorra. He also has a younger half-brother, Prince Arrant (who no one ever mentions).
The larger adult Guerin dragons are sometimes spotted flying around Dragon Stone Castle's turrets, but the family keeps the younger and much smaller dragons close at hand.
The Guerin family has a strong alliance with the Russo Family, one of the oldest human bloodlines in the six kingdoms. Most Russo descendants are easily identifiable by their flaming red locks. They once ruled Taratosa before the dragon riders descended and burned their kingdom to cinders.
Duke Lionel Russo attempted to reach for more power by marrying King Alejandro Rowe's sister, Dutchess Annabelle, tying the Russo bloodline to the Rowe Kingdom. However, in the process he broke his long engagement to King Elvenore's awkward youngest daughter.
Tumblr media
The Taratosa kingdom has recently announced Princess Avorra's engagement to Duke Wyndell Blanco. The news has shook the entire six kingdoms.
Tumblr media
The sixth and final kingdom was overthrown by rebels and now lays in ruins. The free desert people are still fighting to stay free, as both the Rowe and the Blanco Kingdoms have interests in the barren. It is still not clear what sparked their intertest but there are visible traces of the strange visitors who may have created the infamous Cybernetix...
Tumblr media
let's get into it... next

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
Team Supplemental - The Thunderbolts
In the wake of the most prominent super heroes of Earth being declared dead following the war against Onslaught, the villainous Baron Zemo hatched a sinister plan.  He placed his Masters of Evil into a position of trust by deceiving the authorities and the public, secretly rebranding them as the Thunderbolts.
Zemo and his allies donned new costumes with new names and stepped in to fill the roles of the missing heroes.  Citizens were grateful to have new defenders and they accepted the thunderbolts with open arms, even allowing them to operate out of the Baxter Building, the one-time home of The Fantastic Four.
The cads Zemo had recruited into this scheme included The Fixer (who had assumed the new guise of ‘Techno’); Moonstone (who rebranded herself as ‘Meteorite’); The Beetle (now called ‘Mach V’); Screaming Mimi (who had taken on the new moniker as ‘Songbird’) and Power Man (now ‘Atlas’).  Zero led the team himself, having assumed the patriotic identity of ‘Citizen V.’  Not long after their debut, The Thunderbolts were joined by the young heroine, Jolt, who remained unaware of the team’s true motives.
Zemo’s ultimate scheme was to use the public trust bestowed onto the team so to garner power and influence and eventually take over the world.  What he did not account for, however, was that his allies amongst the Masters of Evil would actually come to enjoy playing the role of hero, that the respect and admiration they earned would make them want to be good.
Desperate to maintain control, Zemo outed his own schemes, but it was too late.  The rest of The Thunderbolts defected and helped to bring Zemo down.
From there, The Thunderbolts operated as a virtuous group, led by Hawkeye, followed by Luke Cage and later by the Winter Soldier.  The team has at other times been used as operative of corrupt players, such as Norman Osborn and Wilson Fisk.  Following the Dark Reign era, The Thunderbolts acted as a work furlough program for super villains, were they could get time reduced from their prison sentences by conducting missions as part of the team.
More recently, Cage and Hawkeye decided to rehabilitate the legacy of the Thunderbolts' name and creating a new version of the team to fight for justice, like lightning.  The Thunderbolts first appeared in the pages of The Incredible Hulk Vol.1 #449 (1997).
