Shipper Tag Game!
I was tagged by @negrowhat 🥰 Thanks for the tag!
1 - What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don’t care about anymore?
Hmm, I’m trying to think. I don’t have the best memory of my life as a teen, it was pretty hectic and I didn’t get my first personal computer with internet access until I was 18 years old. So I wasn’t really into the fandom spaces yet, I guess I’ll go with Buffy and Spike? I loved them as a couple so much and now I’m just like; meh, whatever.
Tumblr media
2 - Which ship would you consider your first one?
Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, I was just kid but I was very very invested in them finally kissing lol. Me and my older sister used to watch the English version that they aired in the West in the 90’s, so it wasn’t even a dubbed Anime it was legit changed for American audiences.
Note: I am not American, but you get my point.
Tumblr media
3 - Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?
The first fic I ever wrote I think might have belonged to Willow and Tara 🤔 I’m trying to remember, I’m pretty sure it was Willow and Tara.
Tumblr media
4 - Do you remember the first couple you saw fanart of?
Not really, I was never on the fanart side of fandom spaces because of my total and absolute lack of talent lol. So I’m not really sure what fanart I came across for the very first time, knowing my luck it was something cursed on Google that I accidentally stumbled upon and thus blocked from my memory.
5 - Did you ever get into ship discourse?
Not really, I once stopped interacting with an entire fandom when I started getting attacked because I happened to like a bisexual character with a character of the opposite sex better than with a character of the same sex. Basically I was being called homophobic and other terrible things because I was reblogging het gif sets and pics instead of lesbian gif sets and pics. The fandom for this series was extremely toxic and I actually stopped watching the series because of how much the fandom tainted it for me, all because I thought the het couple had better chemistry then the sapphic couple, that’s all. The character was canonically bisexual and had dated both of the other characters at one point or another on the show, I just thought she happened to work better with the male character. Sigh, people are weird.
6 - Did you used to have a NOTP or have any currently?
Yes, back in the day when I was very active in the Whovian fandom, I was very much against shipping Gwen and Jack from Torchwood. They were my NOTP, not gonna lie, they’re lowkey still my NOTP lol.
Tumblr media
7 - Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?
AlanJeff, I’m still very much stuck in my ‘Alan and Jeff live happily ever after’ phase of mourning Pit Babe’s ending lol.
Tumblr media
8 - Currently do you have any OTPs?
Oh man *cracks knuckles* let me just hop onto my AO3 history, my current obsessions OTPs are;
SeanWhite, ToddBlack, AkkAyan, AlanJeff, PhayaTharn, KaranAchi, PheeJin, Tae Myungha x Cha Yeowoon, Sangwoo x Jaeyoung and Lan Wangji x Wei Wuxian.
Those are the ones that I can confidently say I consider OTPs atm.
9 - Is there any couple that to this day you are extremely mad about them not getting together?
I mean, does it even have to be said?
Tumblr media
10 - Is there any ship that you used to dislike but now you think are kind of interesting?
Hmm, I don’t think so. Chances are if I disliked the ship before, I’d probably still dislike it now.
11 - Do you have a ship that in the past was considered ‘normal’ but now you would be cancelled over?
Ginger and Bridgette from Ginger Snaps, it’s an incest ship because they’re sisters but to be fair to teenage me, the writer and director both talked about how they purposely played up the fact that the pair were borderline incestual. Especially as Ginger became more and more feral (it’s a werewolf horror trilogy), she sexualized her relationship with her sister because that’s what her animal instincts were telling her to do. As she crawled over her talking about masturbation before whispering in her ear; it’s like we’re not even related anymore. I’m pretty sure teenage me has a glitch as my brain tried to figure out why that was so hot.
They continued to play up that whole ‘animals fuck their own family in the wild’ angle in both the sequel and the prequel, the story purposely was saying that there was no one for them but each other.
So yeah, I fell for it. I was a horny and sexually confused 15 year old who had a crush on the main actress of the trilogy lol, of course I shipped them.
Tumblr media
12 - What’s your favourite crack ship?
Crack ship? I don’t really know, I mean what even is a crack ship anymore, ya know? In this day and age, most fandom spaces allow you to ship whoever the fuck you want, rule 34 was long ago blown past by shippers and now it feels like crack ships are a thing of the past.
13 - Who is the couple you’ve read the most fanfics of?
Probably Sterek, Destiel is a close second but I’m going to say Sterek with like 88% certainty that I’m correct lol.
Tumblr media
14 - What do most of your ships usually have in common?
Tumblr media
15 - What do you absolutely hate in a ship?
Miscommunication! I absolutely loathe it when a ship is on the rocks or breaks up because no one would just fucking talk to each other! It drives me insane, because like just speak to one another, why is that so impossible!? I’m in a poly relationship IRL, I have been for over 16 years. When you’re dating more than one person, the idea of not communicating is just baffling! Communication is key! Like, what? Is this just a monogamous thing!? Why can’t the characters just talk to one another, open and honest dialogue. Arg!… so yeah, miscommunication gets me a little heated lmao.
Tagging! I’m not sure who to tagged so I’m going to go and pick the last five mutuals in my notifs and hope you don’t mind me tagging you lol. @oh-goodness-loki @crapyouknowme @jdotsodomite @jeonghanurl @italianpersonwithashippersheart

Fic Tag Game 🌻
Rules - Recommend us 3 of YOUR fics: 1 that is “most popular” and 2 that are “hidden gems!”
Tagged by @mtnofgrace — thanks for tagging me, friend!
I've done this based on my tumblr notes, but also took a look at the kudos each fic got on my AO3 Seeing the difference between how fics perform on tumblr and AO3 is fucking WILD.
Most Popular:
Wrong Answer, Sweetheart — Tom "Iceman" Kazansky x F!Reader Suggestion Box Submission: Have you done a jealous Iceman smut? I feel like he's very possessive 😩 In which Ice gets upset when his pretty girlfriend is hit on at The O Club and has to remind her who she belongs to. (spoiler alert: it's him.)
Hidden Gems that I just love: So, this is where I think things start to get interesting. Because one of my "least popular" fics on tumblr is one of my most popular on AO3. Like, Wrong Answer, Sweetheart is popular on both sites (though not my most popular on AO3), but these "hidden gems" seem to be way more popular on AO3 than they are here 🤷‍♀️.
Bend Over — Tom "Iceman" Kazansky x F!Reader Suggestion Box Submission: An Iceman smut where Ice has her bent over his lap 🥵, and he's spanking her as punishment for purposely teasing him at the bar, in front of all the pilots. (...) Could you add praise and dirty talk, too, please?
Stuck in the Middle — Ron "Slider" Kerner x F!Reader x Tom "Iceman" Kazansky The one where Maverick’s sister is on a mission to give her brother a heart attack by sleeping with not one, but two of his colleagues.
No pressure tagging: @purelyfiction @deadratio @callsign-dragonbaron @callsign-valley + anyone else who sees and wants to join in ❤️

"Zero photographic evidence of what? Larry being real? I beg to differ. We have both photographic and videographic evidence, we have statements of confirmation from both the involved parties on film."  Where is the larry evidence on film? Because it would stop being a conspiracy if larry evidence was on film. Any NDA and injunction against the press is null the moment there is actual evidence posted that makes all those NDAs you claim so many people signed null and void. Any person, namely Louis, will at least do a tell all or many more would sell their story if there was ANY evidence of larry being real on film nullifying all the NDAs and injunctions. Louis will stop that " babygate " you claim is forced upon him covered by NDAs and injunctions. Or do you claim that both Louis and Harry love exploiting children who don't get a choice? Will you ignore this ask too saying people should use google? Once the information from NDAs and injunctions is made public they are all void. Google it.
Hello New Copy and Paste Anon,
Thank you for including me. Also I will answer you in two parts I just had to wake up.
So first off where is there larry evidence on film. Well that evidence is in the way they interact with each other, their eyes, their actions and reactions. While we have been messing with him, louis' reaction at Rolling Stone UK is one such reaction. Often their evidence is in the subtle things. I was luck enough to see 1d in concert twice in 2015 and their actions on stage showed how much they cared for each other and on a different level than niall or Liam. They would just look at one anther and know what was needed or how to respond and care. Watch an ultimate compilation you see the larry evidence.
Secondly, mention NDAs and say Google them. You obviously haven't. The point of an NDA is to give a person incentive to not speak about what had occurred. So saying you can just break them and be free is a bit ignorant. Should you break an NDA you will more than likely have to pay an insane amount of money or be sued by companies/people with the best lawyers on retainer. It would be the dumbest decision.
Please Sony tried to sue George Michael when he was outed in the early 2000s, but because it was a honey pot sting by the police, he wasn't at fault for being outed, they couldn't go through with it.
Before saying something like this please look into NDAs and Larry itself. You can believe what you want but know that so can we.
Sam

Tagged by @eccentricwearsgoggles to list my top 10 comfort movies. I'm not a big cinema-head, so these aren't all relaxing movies. They're what I would slam on the breaks while flipping through TV channels to watch no matter what else is on. Mostly comedy.
1. Snatch (2000) - starring Boris the Bullet Dodger and 32 other extremely important characters
2. Gran Torino (2008) - racist old man becomes not so racist
3. Cashback (2006) - guy with insomnia discovers he can stop time, so he strips women naked in supermarkets (it's NOT sexual)
4. Clerks (1994)
5. Airplane! (1980)
6. Whiplash (2014)
7. Digimon: The Movie (2000) - the OST is very good
8. Shaolin Soccer (2001)
9. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) - local man wants to become a serial killer, but how...
10. Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - also very good OST (DeVotchKa hard carries)
I'll tag @treeky @laprau @rararibbon @stigswayze @mortuaryschool if any of you are interested in sharing your personal tastes

My nephew is starting 7th grade next week and now that it’s officially back to school time, i thought it would be fun to do a random question Wednesday: grade school addition.
Growing up when did the school year start for you?
Did you do anything special the last week of summer vacation?
Did you do the whole school supply and new school clothes shopping?
Did you get name brand school supplies or knock off versions?
What was your favorite subject in school?
What was your favorite year in school?
Hi lovely 🧡
Yay always enjoy these random Wednesday asks. Best wishes to your lil nephew! 😁
Growing up when did the school year start for you?
God it was so long ago i don’t honestly remember. Maybe first week of Sept?
Did you do anything special the last week of summer vacation?
Not that I recall. Just remember that creeping sense of dread that holidays were over lol.
Did you do the whole school supply and new school clothes shopping?
So i went to school a long time ago in a land far far away. Which meant both of these things were mostly irrelevant. With the exception of pens/pencils/rulers/pencil cases, supplies were provided by the school. Also I had school uniform until I was 16 so clothes shopping was mostly irrelevant too.
Did you get name brand school supplies or knock off versions?
See above we got what we were given lol
What was your favorite subject in school?
French, Geography, Latin. If i had to choose just one, Geography.
What was your favorite year in school?
Err maybe first year of senior school. So 11/12 yrs old.
Thanks for the fun ask 🧡

First of all — THANK YOU for thinking of me!
5 things that make me happy? Hmm
1. As fucking hateful as the internet can be, I’m happy I’m able to share my writing with people who enjoy it and share the same interests as me!
2. The peaceful time before I go to sleep when it’s dark and my fiancée is asleep and my dogs are asleep and I can just enjoy their company, read, and/or watch Tik Toks. Everything seems okay then.
3. For being introduced to anime! The shows I’ve watched over the years have truly blown my socks straight off!!
4. The healthy, safe, happy relationship I get to be in! Seriously he’s golden retriever energy and I am very much black cat — I do love him so.
5. Anytime anyone has ever like, reblogged or commented on any of my works!

I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"
Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.
imagine this exchange happens between pages 28-29 in The Crab with the Golden Claws

I recall saying this before, but it bears repeating:
There could be a billion trans people in the world and it still wouldn't be a bad thing because being trans is not a bad thing. Even if the rate of people discovering they are trans is "disproportionate" to trends from decades ago, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a natural consequence for there being more trans people being able to stay alive, and, overall, being able to live in a slightly more tolerant world. You'd only see that as a bad thing if you actively didn't want trans people to either live or live a life that facilitates wellness.

So I accidentally almost got into an argument on Twitter, and now I'm thinking about bad historical costuming tropes. Specifically, Action Hero Leather Pants.
See, I was light-heartedly pointing out the inaccuracies of the costumes in Black Sails, and someone came out of the woodwork to defend the show. The misunderstanding was that they thought I was dismissing the show just for its costumes, which I wasn't - I was simply pointing out that it can't entirely care about material history (meaning specifically physical objects/culture) if it treats its clothes like that.
But this person was slightly offended on behalf of their show - especially, quote, "And from a fan of OFMD, no less!" Which got me thinking - it's true! I can abide a lot more historical costuming inaccuracy from Our Flag than I can Black Sails or Vikings. And I don't think it's just because one has my blorbos in it. But really, when it comes down to it...
What is the difference between this and this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the thing. Leather pants in period dramas isn't new. You've got your Vikings, Tudors, Outlander, Pirates of the Caribbean, Once Upon a Time, Will, The Musketeers, even Shakespeare in Love - they love to shove people in leather and call it a day. But where does this come from?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously we have the modern connotations. Modern leather clothes developed in a few subcultures: cowboys drew on Native American clothing. (Allegedly. This is a little beyond my purview, I haven't seen any solid evidence, and it sounds like the kind of fact that people repeat a lot but is based on an assumption. I wouldn't know, though.) Leather was used in some WWI and II uniforms.
But the big boom came in the mid-C20th in motorcycle, punk/goth, and gay subcultures, all intertwined with each other and the above. Motorcyclists wear leather as practical protective gear, and it gets picked up by rock and punk artists as a symbol of counterculture, and transferred to movie designs. It gets wrapped up in gay and kink communities, with even more countercultural and taboo meanings. By the late C20th, leather has entered mainstream fashion, but it still carries those references to goths, punks, BDSM, and motorbike gangs, to James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Mick Jagger. This is whence we get our Spikes and Dave Listers in 1980s/90s media, bad boys and working-class punks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some of the above "historical" design choices clearly build on these meanings. William Shakespeare is dressed in a black leather doublet to evoke the swaggering bad boy artist heartthrob, probably down on his luck. So is Kit Marlowe.
But the associations get a little fuzzier after that. Hook, with his eyeliner and jewellery, sure. King Henry, yeah, I see it. It's hideously ahistorical, but sure. But what about Jamie and Will and Ragnar, in their browns and shabby, battle-ready chic? Well, here we get the other strain of Bad Period Drama Leather.
See, designers like to point to history, but it's just not true. Leather armour, especially in the western/European world, is very, very rare, and not just because it decays faster than metal. (Yes, even in ancient Greece/Rome, despite many articles claiming that as the start of the leather armour trend!) It simply wasn't used a lot, because it's frankly useless at defending the body compared to metal. Leather was used as a backing for some splint armour pieces, and for belts, sheathes, and buckles, but it simply wasn't worn like the costumes above. It's heavy, uncomfortable, and hard to repair - it's simply not practical for a garment when you have perfectly comfortable, insulating, and widely available linen, wool, and cotton!
As far as I can see, the real influence on leather in period dramas is fantasy. Fantasy media has proliferated the idea of leather armour as the lightweight choice for rangers, elves, and rogues, a natural, quiet, flexible material, less flashy or restrictive than metal. And it is cheaper for a costume department to make, and easier for an actor to wear on set. It's in Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, Runescape, and World of Warcraft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think this is how we get to characters like Ragnar and Vane. This idea of leather as practical gear and light armour, it's fantasy, but it has this lineage, behind which sits cowboy chaps and bomber/flight jackets. It's usually brown compared to the punk bad boy's black, less shiny, and more often piecemeal or decorated. In fact, there's a great distinction between the two Period Leather Modes within the same piece of media: Robin Hood (2006)! Compare the brooding, fascist-coded villain Guy of Gisborne with the shabby, bow-wielding, forest-dwelling Robin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, back to the original question: What's the difference between Charles Vane in Black Sails, and Edward Teach in Our Flag Means Death?
Simply put, it's intention. There is nothing intentional about Vane's leather in Black Sails. It's not the only leather in the show, and it only says what all shabby period leather says, relying on the same tropes as fantasy armour: he's a bad boy and a fighter in workaday leather, poor, flexible, and practical. None of these connotations are based in reality or history, and they've been done countless times before. It's boring design, neither historically accurate nor particularly creative, but much the same as all the other shabby chic fighters on our screens. He has a broad lineage in Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean and such, but that's it.
In Our Flag, however, the lineage is much, much more intentional. Ed is a direct homage to Mad Max, the costuming in which is both practical (Max is an ex-cop and road warrior), and draws on punk and kink designs to evoke a counterculture gone mad to the point of social breakdown, exploiting the thrill of the taboo to frighten and titillate the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In particular, Ed is styled after Max in the second movie, having lost his family, been badly injured, and watched the world turn into an apocalypse. He's a broken man, withdrawn, violent, and deliberately cutting himself off from others to avoid getting hurt again. The plot of Mad Max 2 is him learning to open up and help others, making himself vulnerable to more loss, but more human in the process.
Tumblr media
This ties directly into the themes of Our Flag - it's a deliberate intertext. Ed's emotional journey is also one from isolation and pain to vulnerability, community, and love. Mad Max (intentionally and unintentionally) explores themes of masculinity, violence, and power, while Max has become simplified in the popular imagination as a stoic, badass action hero rather than the more complex character he is, struggling with loss and humanity. Similarly, Our Flag explores masculinity, both textually (Stede is trying to build a less abusive pirate culture) and metatextually (the show champions complex, banal, and tender masculinities, especially when we're used to only seeing pirates in either gritty action movies or childish comedies).
Our Flag also draws on the specific countercultures of motorcycles, rockers, and gay/BDSM culture in its design and themes. Naturally, in such a queer show, one can't help but make the connection between leather pirates and leather daddies, and the design certainly nods at this, with its vests and studs. I always think about this guy, with his flat cap so reminiscient of gay leather fashions.
Tumblr media
More overtly, though, Blackbeard and his crew are styled as both violent gangsters and countercultural rockstars. They rove the seas like a bikie gang, free and violent, and are seen as icons, bad boys and celebrities. Other pirates revere Blackbeard and wish they could be on his crew, while civilians are awed by his reputation, desperate for juicy, gory details.
This isn't all of why I like the costuming in Our Flag Means Death (especially season 1). Stede's outfits are by no means accurate, but they're a lot more accurate than most pirate media, and they're bright and colourful, with accurate and delightful silks, lace, velvets, and brocades, and lovely, puffy skirts on his jackets. Many of the Revenge crew wear recognisable sailor's trousers, and practical but bright, varied gear that easily conveys personality and flair. There is a surprising dedication to little details, like changing Ed's trousers to fall-fronts for a historical feel, Izzy's puffy sleeves, the handmade fringe on Lucius's red jacket, or the increasing absurdity of navy uniform cuffs between Nigel and Chauncey.
A really big one is the fact that they don't shy away from historical footwear! In almost every example above, we see the period drama's obsession with putting men in skinny jeans and bucket-top boots, but not only does Stede wear his little red-heeled shoes with stockings, but most of his crew, and the ordinary people of Barbados, wear low boots or pumps, and even rough, masculine characters like Pete wear knee breeches and bright colours. It's inaccurate, but at least it's a new kind of inaccuracy, that builds much more on actual historical fashions, and eschews the shortcuts of other, grittier period dramas in favour of colour and personality.
But also. At least it fucking says something with its leather.

On the idea of Theseus's Ship: in the end, it's still his, isn't it? It was known as Theseus's, and it will continue to be known as Theseus's.
Even after he has returned to the ground which grew the wood of the hammer used to nail the ship's frame, Even after generations of new wood have rotted and the sails are rags clinging to threads, Even after millennia,
it will still be Theseus's Ship.
Thank you for bringing us home.
Goodnight, Phosphophyllite.
