Sakurai Haruka: Theory pt. 2

Right, sorry for taking so long, but here's part 2 of the theory that Haruka spend a significant length of time in a psych ward. So the main parts of his MV's that imply this would be from AKAA, namely:

The room is a plain, unfurnished space, with light coming in from bars reminiscent of prison bars. They are high up, for safety. The chair is a simple folding chair, although it's a little too risky for something used on a psych ward (too dangerous, can be used as a weapon). I'd expect seats to be pillows, ottoman-like things, couches, or seating bolted directly into the floor.

A little window on the rooms of patients', it has a little hole on the side so it can be opened. This is used to check on patients at night, to ensure they are well and alive. It is not something seen in most other places, due to privacy.

There are two rectangles. One will be a light switch, and the other will be a panic button, if a patient needs assistance. They are loud. Many other places don't need two visible switches/buttons near the doors.

Here you can see the vent for the door, helps to hear patients and ensures proper air. The doorknob does not appear to be able to lock from the inside. The doorknob is a minor ligature risk, however ease of use and reduction of avaliable ligatures should make it a decent doorknob choice. The floor seen here is made of square tiles. Good for cleaning, however a risk for self-harm. It's shown as rectangular in other parts, but it may just be due to camera angle. All in all (knowing/agony), this can only be a depiction of a psych ward. This is backed up by Haruka's language skill level, as discussed in pt. 1, and what that implies in terms of education. What does this explain? Why would Haruka's time spent on a psych ward be shown, in a video depicting his mindscape regarding his crime? Does this fact put any other details into context? What can be inferred? Well, to start, were Haruka on a psych ward, it would explain his clothes. For the most part. In Weakness, the "current/teen" version of Haruka is in a plain, white outfit.

He wears shoes that aren't complex in design, and probably don't allow him any advantage in a fight. The clothes are white, good for washing and easy identification of patients, and don't provide any extra ligature opportunities. Now, there's a high chance that these are actually Haruka's clothes, not ones provided by the ward, because of something else later.

In AKAA, his shoes are different, but still white, harmless, and likely provided by the facility. Oddly enough, his socks are mismatched. He also wears his patchwork outfit, a combination of personal clothes and more formal/provided clothes. This is in line with some of his int. answers, such as: "How do you decide what clothes to wear for the day" - "I wear what's there" (because he doesn't have a lot of choice, plus spending a long time away from home would mean that he doesn't need many personal clothes to wear outside of the ward) "What do you think of the prison outfits?" - "They're kind of relaxing" (he's more used to the prison outfits than "normal" outfits, so it provides him with a sense of familiarity and comfort) Something that is not consistent with this theory would be his necklace! Except. If you look carefully, the only times we see him wearing his necklace in the MVs would be when he is unlikely to be on the unit at that moment. He doesn't wear it for most of AKAA, for example. But, he's still attached to it. Which makes me wonder as to where in his personal timeline did he come into possession of his mother's necklace? Because he cannot have worn it on the ward. It's an obvious ligature risk. But he's wearing it here:

Implying that he wore it during his murder of his victim. This is what makes me think that these are Haruka's clothes, because the ward would probably want its clothes returned to it upon discharge. (VERY low chance of killing someone while on the ward, and his victim was killed outside, judging by the little green patch in the background of the end shot of AKAA) Okay. That's a lot of reading into clothing. I think I'll cut it off here, and make a part 3. Didn't mean for it to get this long... Next time, I'll want to talk about how his time on the ward has impacted his behaviour, putting a lot of Haruka's actions into context that may not be immediately obvious for some viewers. It'll mostly be me going over a bunch of tiny details. Should I post about other things? I've been wondering about doing translyrics for Backdraft, a summary of how each character refers to everyone (honorifics, how they refer to self, how this changes), and a post on why Milgram makes no sense (or why it's not an actual prison), linking the info in this post to the Milgram facility. Should I do any of these? (And are there any other cipher texts I've missed, because for some reason I've become very interested in them. It's a whole other alphabet! I wonder if any of the merch has cipher text...? As an easter egg.)

✨ Breach of containment ✨

This is the last I’ve been working on for the past few weeks, very, very inspired by the game Carrion (if you haven’t played it yet, you absolutely should !), which is made all the more special because I finally took time to use my lighting kit (seem below). Of course, closeups and commentaries below the cut

This is one of the screenshots I’ve been working with (where the monster just breached containment) :

So, as I said previously, this piece is heavily inspired by Carrion. I tried to look up any previously made Lego thing related to the game, but all I could find were a few Reddit posts with (debatably) interesting takes on the monster. So, the good news is that this is most likely the most original piece I’ve made yet.

The original plan was to have only one container, and one monster, with left being the body inside and right being the outside part. However, placing Left in the middle of the transparent pieces made it mostly good on its own, so with some modifications, I made it work alone and expanded the outside part inward, and ended up with two of them.

Left is pretty okay from all angles, but Right is not necessarily as good from the back, and had a supplementary jaw on the side of the container which can’t be seen on the photos.

Getting back to comparing that to the game. I tried to stay close while adding my own little details. The wiring and cable system is from me, but the container is mostly inspired by the game, just like the electric box (middle) and the little informative display (under the electric box) which is…empty, yes.

Some details can’t be seen on the photos (or barely), which are mostly some filler sci-fi stuffs to make the wall less flat and less empty.

What also helped with breach the flatness of the wall is the switch from dark grey to light gray, using the awesome spring projectile launcher piece, which has this very nice shape which make the transition just a bit smoother.

So, let’s talk about whatever I’ve done with the lighting !

I’ve had this old lighting kit (originally designed for a car model) lying around for a long time, and finally got to use it ! It doesn’t look really good without my studio lights because my camera is not made for that (The effect in reality really gives escaping monstrosity a dark vibe which is not well depicted with my photos…). Another thing which is not noticeable with the photos is that the two red dots in the center are actually blinking lights (and somehow, they tend to desynchronise).

The choice of letting some of the wires out is debatable, but I think it adds to the vibe (and some of them would have been a pain to hide anyway). And sadly, the back is but a mess of wires, but I can’t actually do anything about that.

Speaking of the back, the whole thing is one dot large and completely flat, and the ceiling only hold without pillars because of the use of tension linking directly the baseplate and the roof through the use of technic bars; and probably because the ceiling itself is not that heavy. It is, in fact, only constitued of six old road pieces connected together and frames, which give the roof little weight and high sturdiness (and the shape on the side of the piece offers a nice sci-fi effect as a bonus).

The addition of tentacles in the vent (which hides the connection between road plates in the roof) is just another reminder of the game : you can’t be safe anywhere, if air flows~

thinking ab the RAD yearbook... how when yearbook photos are taken, you'd barely been in the devildom for a month but lucifer is fussing over you making sure you make a good impression, as to not ruin the school's (diavolo's) image. He fixes your tie, presses hairs into place (frowns when they dont stick), smooths your coat, etc. he forces the brothers to polish their shoes and press their uniforms the night prior, and anyone who isn't up to dress code has a harsh punishment coming their way. he always looks perfect, so the most he does is press his uniform and perhaps take a little more time for his hair in the morning. photo is positively radiant (the brothers try to mess up his picture every year... they've tried everything.. hair dye instead of shampoo, hexed face wash, ruining his clothes, nothing works. its very frustrating). lucifer the beautiful fallen angel.. you're pretty sure he has a dedicated fan club that practically die from excitement every time the yearbook is released

mammon is the bane of lucifer’s existence. this little bitch can never wear his uniform correctly he just can’t figure out how to tie his tie goddamnit. he also complains endlessly about yearbook photos. how “it’s such a fuckin hassle” and “the stick up lucifer’s ass is shoved up even farther on picture day.” he is a model though, so he knows the right angles, and which side of his face is best, etc. so his pictures always come out looking absolutely gorgeous ur so jealous. just before he’s about to take his picture, if you run up to him, ruffle his hair, kiss his cheek, and tell him he looks cute he’ll have the goofiest lovestruck grin immortalized in the yearbook forever. If mephistopheles were to edit the yearbook photos to embarrass people, he literally wouldn’t touch mammons lol he thinks it’s so funny as is. mams is already so embarrassed. literally if anyone brings up the cute little blush on his cheeks it’s on sight.

leviathan is just. there. this is like one of the only times he’s actually at school (other than student council meetings) because he mostly does online classes. probably complains about missing an episode of The New Girl Next Door Leaves Every Night at 1AM So I Decide To Follow Her And It Turns Out She’s A Thousand Year Old Vampire Who Is Madly In Love With My Older Brother And Wants to Have His Babies or something like that. is kinda used to causal comfy clothes, so having to wear his uniform correctly makes him whiny and uncomfortable. he really likes loose things and the uniform is so crisp and tight and he swears his tie is cutting off blood flow to his head. probably has more of a grimace than a smile in the photo because of his discomfort. hates looking through the yearbook when it comes out. he has two brothers that are literally models and he looks like some creepy otaku :(( is very down on himself, and really self-critical, please give him some hugs and tell him u think he looks cute as hell in the picture. he’ll deny it and then cry into ur shoulder. help.

satan doesn't do much. fixes his bowtie (his bowtie is so cute and goofy i love him) and combs his hair through. probably the most normal and the least amount of a headache for lucifer (much to his dismay). maybe his camera smile looks a little menacing, but you know his true smile is sweet and soft. doesn't really care much about the yearbook, but will deface lucifer's photo (its a yearly tradition, thinks up new designs the whole year in preparation. will be overjoyed if u ask to brainstorm with him). overall satan is a cute ass dork and u love him for it.

asmodeus obviously takes yearbook photos very seriously, and engages in an intense spa day before hand. hair masks, face masks, nail masks, foot masks, everything. frets over his hair for ages, lucifer has to come and practically drag him away from his mirror because they're going to be late. would be the type to ask the photographer to retake a picture a billion times because he tilted his head in a weird direction, or his tie wasn't even, or his lashes aren't curled enough, or the lighting was a little too dark... always goes last. will force you to let him do your makeup and hair. ur just so cute he can’t help himself. once yearbooks come out he’ll gush about how cute you look and literally kiss ur tiny little paper face.

beelzebub is literally a pain in the ass. like, i love him, but his uniform probably has food stains and crumbs everywhere. lucifer has given up at this point. beebs doesn’t even smile. he’s just sitting stoically. literally just :| want food. it kinda works for him tho hes like hot intimidating beefcake who hardly ever smiles while u know hes the sweetest gentle giant towards u. like his genuine smile is so cute and aaaa omg i want to squish his cute little cheeks. but like literally crumbs everywhere lucifer can’t get him to be crumbless they're everywhere. beel gives 0 shits tho he literally couldn’t care less about the yearbook. mephi could literally photoshop a naked feminine body on to him and he’d just be like. “ok. *nom nom nom*” will literally glow if u tell him he looks cute in his yearbook pic though.

belphegor is annoying but just because he is #2tired2care. his uniform is messed up because he napped in it waiting for his turn and now his hair is messed up and his tie is crumpled. would literally be late for his picture because he fell asleep somewhere waiting. probably has half-lidded, sleepy eyes and a drowsy smile OR just a sly smirk. definitely leaves immediately afterward to the hol and naps the rest of the day. also doesn't give a shit ab the yearbook v2. he’s got better things to do than care about a single yearbook pic. he’s got hundreds more.

I am so confused.

Even when this lens was first released it was $850 brand new.

Does he think people aren't going to check current prices? Did he get scammed and overpay originally? Not to mention eBay gives you a suggestion for pricing.

I really wish I hadn't sold my lenses. There was a point where I had a major decline in my health and I could no longer make comedy for my main website. At the same time, my parents were getting sicker and needed more help. We were also struggling financially. I was so depressed and I was sure I'd never do photography again, so I sold most of my lenses.

We needed the money at that moment, but in the grand scheme of things, the lens money barely made a dent in our situation. Not to mention, we got a small inheritance from my grandmother soon after, so that increased my regret. It took me years of scrounging and saving to build up a collection of 5 lenses. None of them top of the line, but all of them a good value for their performance.

Thankfully I kept the lens I used to take pictures of Otis—my "puppy lens." But my ultra wide, my macro, my tele, and my portrait lens... all gone.

And now I am trying to figure out the cheapest way I can do what I want to do with photography and I'm remembering just how expensive this hobby is. But I think I need to figure this out because I have had a substantial boost in my mental health since I started taking photos again.

A good 50mm could serve several roles. I can add extension tubes for macro. It is about 75mm on an APS-C camera, which is good for portraits. The wide aperture would allow low light photography. Combined with my Otis lens, all I'd be missing is telephoto and ultra wide angle, but honestly I never did much of that anyway. Though ultra wide angle photography is probably the most fun you can have taking pictures—even if the photographic uses are rare.

I did get a Nifty Fifty for my trip to Orlando. I wanted to see if I could get away with using a $100 lens. For the price, it is surprisingly good. And it is the first lens I recommend to anyone starting photography—as almost every camera brand has its own version. But I had several issues trying to make it work for my needs.

It's not very sharp, which is actually fine for shots taken at a distance, but would be a deal breaker for product photos and macro shots which are very close up. Those require as much detail as possible, especially if you need to crop. When you are trying to show people the fine hairs on a bee's body, a soft image just isn't going to have the same impact.

It also does not nail focus consistently and it back focuses (it focuses more behind than in front). Which is a deal breaker for my efforts to use less energy. When I did my portrait shoot with Katrina, I had to do many test shots and look at them on the computer to make sure I was getting them in focus. I was going back and forth and getting up and down. In the end I had to use a smaller aperture and higher ISO to get increased depth of field. And even then the tip of her nose was soft in the photos. Not to mention the added noise from raising the ISO.

This Sigma is a wonderful lens. I'm trying to find a good deal used, but it's still out of reach for now. I have no idea what my financial future is right now and until I know for sure that my brother will release my inheritance in March, I have to be more careful with my budget.

I am going to sell all of my studio lighting gear and use those funds to help me set up a new studio upstairs. I'm hoping that will cover the new lights I will need, but I don't think it will be enough for a lens. Someone suggested a site where I can turn my yard into a dog park, so I am looking into that. I might also see if I can get some gigs restoring photos for people, but it is so difficult finding clients.

Every problem has a solution. And maybe the universe will do me a favor and keep my brother from being terrible just this once.

mmo rp is kind of fundamentally not so different from RPing in any messaging program, something we've been doing since the days of IRC. the story you co-create is primarily driven by what's written in the text box. no matter how well made the emote animations are, they are not communicative enough to really tell a complex story, so you always fall back to prose. your character's voice will be limited to a handful of nonverbal expressions - a laugh, mm-hm, uh-huh. you are constantly having to reinterpret bits of game jank as you construct your mental version of the 'real story'. and yet

these visual aids do make a really substantial difference in how you experience it i think. to honestly a kind of surprising degree. of course having a character design on screen helps avoid writing tons of descriptive prose - but there's also a lot that can be done with simple movement through space, like a character positioning themselves besides another, retreating to sulk, getting up to dance.

like in visual novels and manga, you have essentially a set of codified, symbolic expressions - but in FFXIV, every race has its own set of very charming and polished animations for nearly every emote, which adds a huge amount of info in how you interpret that character (and slot them into the otaku database). a roegadyn will by default be loud and brash, a viera refined and dreamy, a lala mischievous and childlike. a mi'qote is a cat. since all of these are chosen by the player, they act as a strong signal of what your character's deal is - their body language comes across even if it's not like the actual scene fully acted out.

and what's fascinating to me is that even when i know what the player looks like irl, i still find myself responding to their game embodiment in how i think about them, i don't picture them irl... but also, having the embodiment helps me get into character. I have two alts, and with each one i feel drawn to a different style of roleplay. just like a list of prompts in a ttrpg sourcebook, the embodiment you've chosen gives you something to bounce off when you're improvising.

roleplaying is very similar to improv comedy, and many of the same analysis concepts - 'offers', 'yes, and' - apply. we're essentially improvising a digital puppet show. building up an RP venue and customising our model is a way of laying out props to help that process roll smoothly.

i often dream about an mmo animation system that would be less janky - more control over camera placement, better handling of interactions between player characters and characters with their environment, more ability to plan out timing and blocking and so on - essentially trending towards multiplayer source filmmaker.

the problem is that such a system would probably have way too much cognitive overhead to be usable in real time improv. i think what something like ffxiv shows is that even very simple elements - besides the emotes, your character looks towards your target and moves their lips when you talk, you can adjust their expression and there's animation hooks all over the place line chairs you can sit on - can actually be a very expressive palette and people are pretty good at filtering out the jank when they want to create a story together.

indeed, it becomes a skill - knowing what animations you have, how to reinterpret them, how to line yourself up with other players. and in the end you don't remember the time spent shuffling forwards and typing /hug again and again, or standing up and sitting down repeatedly until it lines up right. you remember the cute sight of your character sitting beside your friend, looking fondly at each other.

there's also another angle which is like... i find real life 'going out' very difficult - usually hitting a point of information overload very quickly in a pub environment, and while music is easier to manage than a wall of conversation, i never really learned how to interact with strangers at a club, concert, convention. I'm not good with alcohol. when i try to a pub, i usually end up retreating into myself and ducking out. in mmos, though... i find prose much more easy to be expressive in, and the limits of the animation system kind of level the playing field a bit in terms of The Autism when it comes to body language and the like.

still, sometimes it feels like a very sad existence - i rely on this simulacrum, pretending i am being intimate and social with people i can't touch through a computer program that draws triangles. everything in an mmo is muted, blunted by the medium - which makes it 'safe', but also tinges it with a loneliness that can't really be broken. but for now, i guess the simulacrum is all I've got, you know? and i can appreciate how it's put together, all the effort that has gone in from devs and players alike to realise this alternative channel for connection.

but yeah. i guess it comes back to this again... there's a reason my online 'face' is a low poly approximation of an animal!

Here's the transcript of my latest lesson. We get a very special visitor for this one!

[A video of a full classroom. Zinnia is nowhere to be seen. Instead, a Whismur stands atop the desk next to three Tera Shards. The students whisper among themselves before gasping. The camera is angled upwards to reveal Zinnia is hanging from the ceiling by a rope Spider-Man style.

Zinnia: Hello my lovely students. It's me, your teacher, Zinnia.

She drops down to the floor, landing perfectly with her arms outstretched to the sides. The camera follows her.

Zinnia: Who's ready to learn some history? Oh! But first! There's someone I need to introduce!

She plops down into a rolling chair and pushes herself over to the desk. She thrusts out both arms towards the Whismur as if presenting her at a show.

Zinnia: This is Assistant Professor Aster. I expect you to treat her with more respect than you would me.

She whacks the desk a few times as if she's playing the drums.

Zinnia: Now, let's get started! Who can tell me what these are.

She waves her hands over the Tera Shards on the desk like a merchant presenting her wares. Several students raise their hands. Zinnia picks one at random.

Zinnia: Yes! You! You look smart!

Student: Those are Tera Shards. You get them from completing Tera Raids.

Zinnia: Correct! But there's also another, secret method of getting them? Anyone know what it is? Anyone?

She pauses for a moment. Nobody raises their hand.

Zinnia: Theft! It's theft! I stole these from your science teacher. What a geek. I like him.

The students whisper amongst themselves.

Zinnia: Oh relax, I'll give them back. I just needed them for this class and I didn't feel like asking. Skies above.

A student raises their hand.

Student: Professor Zinnia! What does this have to do with Hoenn history?

Zinnia: I'm glad you asked! Absolutely nothing! But, they make for great props! So, Ground, Water, Dragon!

As she says the name of each type she picks up its corresponding Tera Crystal.

Zinnia: Can anyone tell me the significance of these types to Hoenn History?

A student raises their hand.

Zinnia: Yes!

Student: They're the types of the Super-Ancient Pokemon.

Zinnia: Ding ding ding! We have a winner! But they're not just the types of the Super-Ancient Pokemon, they're also the preferred types of Hoenn's three native tribes, the Gaiads, the Oceanids and, of course, the Draconids.

Zinnia dramatically gestures to herself when she mentions the Draconids.

Zinnia: Let's jump right into it! We'll start with the one you probably know, the Draconids. Everybody in Hoenn knows about the Draconids, if only because of my unfortunate habit of ending up on the news. On the record, I'm innocent of all crimes.

Student: Nobody said-

Zinnia: So, the Draconids! These days we largely stick around our home of Metepr Village but back in the days before the Normanssons, we had Settlements all over Hoenn, but mainly centered on Meteor Falls and the surrounding area. We worship Lord Rayquaza and pass down myths and legends of it and other Legendaries through murals and oral tradition. Stories are very important to us Draconids and one of the most venerated roles in Meteor Village is the Lorekeeper, the person whose job it is to memorize all the myths and legends and teach them to others. And wouldn't you know it, I'm the Lorekeeper and I'm teaching you myths and legends! I'm so good at my job!

She spins around in the rolling chair.

Zinnia: Draconids are, of course, master Dragon Trainers. It's quite literally in our blood. Turns out when you hang out with Dragons for a few generations some of their dragon-y-ness rubs off on you. Now we get fangs!

She grins, proudly displaying her fangs for all to see.

Zinnia: Draconids are also excellent at construction. Nobody could build like we can. We managed to build Sky Pillar without any modern day construction equipment. Granted, we never would have been able to do it without the help of the original Sootopolitans but they're an entire nother can of worms that we don't have time to unpack right now.

Aster makes Whismur noises.

Zinnia: You're right, sweetie, we should probably move on. I've spread enough "Draconids are Awesome" propaganda for now and we've still got tons left to cover! Next up, the Oceanids! The Oceanids were a tribe that ruled the waves of Hoenn! And, since Hoenn was and is mostly water, too much water one might say, this meant they were very powerful. They were masters of sailing, navigation, and Water Type Pokemon. The maps that made of Hoenn's islands are still some of the most accurate maps ever created and their trade routes are still in use today!

Zinnia: If you've run the Gym Challenge in Hoenn you've probably passed through Pacifidlog Town, a town floating on the water. The Oceanids used to have dozens of floating towns just like that! Isn't that cool? Most of them are gone now but Pacifidlog Town remains and still has a strong culture and tradition to this day.

Zinnia: A lot of Oceanid myths and legends center around Manaphy. The Draconids were experts at construction but the Oceanids were no slouches either. They built a massive temple on the ocean called Samiya or just the Sea Temple if that's too hard to spell. It was a place they could go to celebrate their connection to the Water and Water Type Pokemon and a place for Manaphy to live. Unfortunately, Samiya is lost. Historians will tell you it was destroyed but the Oceanids will tell you it's still out there, floating on the sea. And I think I'm inclined to agree with them. Stranger things have happened in this world.

Zinnia stands up and stretches.

Zinnia: Whoo, oh I needed that. Remember, kids, it's important to get up and stretch every once in a while. So do that, get up and stretch.

Zinnia waits as about a good three quarters of the class does as she says before continuing.

Zinnia: Now, we've got one last tribe to cover before the day is done, the Gaiads, Masters of Ground Type Pokemon. Now, the Gaiads-

There's a knock at the door. The Camera swings over to reveal Champion Geeta herself standing in the doorway. If this were a sitcom there would be cheers from the audience.

Zinnia: Well hello, there. Look at this, class, we have a visitor. La Primera herself.

Geeta: Yes, sorry to bother you, I just need to borrow-

Zinnia plops back down into the rolling chair and rolls herself over to Geeta with one push.

Zinnia: Oh it's no trouble, no trouble at all. We were just about to start learning about the Gaiads! Would you like to join us.

Geeta: Thank you for the offer but I'm afraid I'll have to decline. Now, as I was saying-

Zinnia: Of course, of course, I get it. You're a busy woman, what with being Champion and all. I couldn't possibly take up your precious time with my boring history lessons.

Geeta appears nonplussed.

Geeta: Well, I'm sure they're very interesting but-

Zinnia: No, no, it's fine. No need to let me down gently. I am merely a humble Lorekeeper and you are the Champion of Paldea.

Geeta: Ms. Zinnia!

Zinnia: Professor Zinnia, if you please. I'm a professor now. And a Lorekeeper. Oh, actually, call me Professor Lady Lorekeeper Zinnia. Not you, kids, you can just keep calling me Zinnia.

Geeta: I-

The school bell chimes. Zinnia pouts.

Zinnia: Aw, already? But we were just getting to the fun part!

She leans all the way back in the rolling chair, tipping it over and doing a backwards somersault, ending with her standing behind the teacher's desk.

Zinnia: Alright, kiddos, that's all for today. I'll finish teaching you about the Gaiads next class. Remember, I'm always available for a battle unless I'm not!

The class begins packing up and filing out of the room. Zinnia turns to an uncharacteristically irritated Geeta and smiles innocently.

Zinnia: Now, what was it you wanted, Ms. Champion?

First-Impression thoughts on Hazbin Hotel's "official" first ep, now that I checked it out on YT-

*Spoiler warning below for those who didn't see it yet-*

-Great to see Charlie & Vaggie again, still a wholesome lil supportive pair whilst having their own quirks/things to do on the side. Esp with Vaggie spending the whole time back at the hotel reshooting a whole commercial for Charlie's sake, awww :3

-Pleasantly surprised by the twist of Charlie's mom being the figure she was most inspired by to make her dream come true, along with her love for singing. Curious to see where Lilith's whereabouts could be if she's been away for so long?

-The new voices were... a mixed bag, I suppose? Mainly in the line/tone-deliveries for certain characters (& I guess I'm still moreso used to the OG pilot's portrayals lol), but I can see the good attempts made from those like Charlie & Alastor.

-I... don't know how I feel about the way Lucifer's backstory was handled? Like, yeah its interesting hearing of him & Lilith genuinely connecting over their "rebellious" natures (& thus fleeing from Heaven's wrath/staying in Hell to be together). But then, the whole thing with Lucifer apparently being some "doofy, misunderstood dreamer who only wanted the best for Humanity, got bullied by those mean ol' angels, and didn't meaaaan to spread Sin all across Earth~ 🥺🥺" ...ehhhhh, felt kinda lame imho 🤷‍♀️. Not that I mind giving nuanced/sympathetic angles to a character's development now & then... but with someone like Lucifer (who mind you, is meant to represent the "Ring of Pride" on top of his Hell-ruling duties), I guess I kinda expected more... "bite" to his portrayal, I guess? .3. But idk, maybe that's just me... (*Tho admittedly, one could argue that perhaps he and/or Lilith were simply lying in that storybook to make them look less "bad"... idk, given HB's track record with Stolas' writing and since both shows are made by the same people... part of me can't help having my doubts ^^; *)

-Adam... ooooooh boi .x.;; Ever since I saw his leaked design I've always been rather... "mixed" about him, and now seeing him on-screen & talking I... don't really get the concept behind him? I mean, yeah I'm all for a fun, chaotic-jackass type when done right (hell I still consider Blitz among my faves to this day lol). But with Adam apparently being the big leader behind Heaven's army, AND was even the "original" Adam from biblical times... how tf did he get the chance to be allowed in Heaven if he not only helped curse humanity to sin (aka: sharing Forbidden Fruit with Eve), but on top of him currently being a horny, misogynistic loudmouth? 🤨Discounting that is also the fact that his whole design vibe just... doesn't really give me "holy army leader" vibes, but more-or-less just Blitz in some weird angel cosplay lol 🤷‍♀️. No shade to those who genuinely do like Adam though (and I'll admit his song was surprisingly catchy lol), I just... feel like his whole personality/design vibe could've probably fit better to a fallen angel-type character (or even a demon-angel hybrid if you wanna play more into the Heaven vs. Hell conflict), someone who only takes up the "Adam" title as an ego trip to enact his revenge against Hell... or, something like that idk; my brain's tired lol. (*His sidekick Lute seems pretty cool tho, she kinda reminds me of Tempest Shadow from MLP in a way .3.*)

-Nice to see more of the old Hotel gang again, esp those like Nifty she was a cute :3 (her whole reaction to the camera honestly being a whole mood lol)

-Did not expect to see Brandon Rogers pop up voicing Katie Killjoy of all people, buuuut I guess I can see the amusing comparison potential to that one CEO persona of his lol

....Aaaaaand yep, that's about the gist of my first-impression thoughts atm .3. Dunno if I'll be sitting down to watch the whole season of Amazon's Hazbin atm (*'cause like, I do have Amazon Prime, buuuuut I rarely ever use that to watch shows (save for some classic cartoons here & there lol) .w.; *), but I'd say it was still generally a decent watch for what it is imo👍(+any chance to see my girl Vaggie again, the better~ x3💜)

No Killer - Teaser for Compass

For the first day of @species-whump-weekly, y'all get a teaser from the current draft of Compass!

For anyone unfamiliar with my OCs and the plot of this story, check out its masterpost here!

“I could help you, if you’d take the cuffs off.” Barrett holds out his bound hands.

“Yeah, my day would really be improved by being strangled into unconsciousness and then getting my blood sucked like a juicebox.”

“Look. If I wanted to hurt you, I could pick up one of these rocks and break your skull right now. I was just offering.”

He has a point.

“Why would you help someone who’s taking you to a death sentence?”

“Because no one deserves to die like that.”

That doesn’t sound like something a stone-cold killer would say.

“You could just run.”

“Where would I go? It’s broad daylight, your car isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and who in their right mind would pick up a hitchhiker who looks like me?”

This is the kind of conversation Sierra would expect to have with Pete, not Barrett. It does give her a moment’s pause that he thought through all those angles. Guess it’s not like he had much else to do back there but listen to me and Pete. She’d honestly probably have done the same. “You’re being weirdly logical.”

“I’m not brain-dead.” He shrugs. “With one good arm, digging him out will take you hours. I just figured he has a better chance if I help.”

Sierra sighs, slumping defeatedly against the wall. “Tell me why I should give you a chance to try anything, when you murdered two people and nearly drained eight more.”

“I didn’t kill anyone.” His voice sounds shaky. “I didn’t…those people…that wasn’t me. When I was still human.” He looks down at his hands. “After I turned, that’s on me. I know I messed up. I know I hurt them, and I couldn’t make it stop. But I didn’t kill that woman and her daughter.”

“Everyone who gets caught says they’re innocent.” But there isn’t as much conviction in her voice as she wants there to be.

“They were dead when I got there. Look. I might have been a junkie and a thief, but I was no killer. I swear. All I did was break into the place looking for some cash or some shit I could fence. And they were just…there. I’d seen a lot of messed up things, hanging around with dealers and all, but nothing like that. It freaked me out. I didn’t know what to do, so I just froze. And then ran like hell.”

“You panicked and left without taking anything, but left behind enough evidence to get yourself accused of the murders?” Sierra can’t believe he’s said this much. But he’s also had almost a week to fabricate a convincing story. He’s telling me all this for a reason. He didn’t just suddenly start opening up on a whim.

He shakes his head. “A neighbor’s security cameras caught me.”

“And no one ever looked to see if they caught anyone else?”

“You think I called the LAPD to ask hey, did you by chance look at those videos again?”

“Okay, back off the sarcasm, huh?”

“Want to take these cuffs off so I can get to work? We’re wasting time.” He nods to the still slowly shifting rock heap. “What are you afraid of? What happens if I’m wrong? Or what happens if I’m right?”

The three feet between them feels like an uncrossable rift. Like they’re shouting back and forth over some chasm dividing them into different universes. There is no way he can ever cross back over to her side. And joining him, for Sierra, would be a literal fate worse than death.

But she needs to make a choice. Trust him, or trust herself.

And she hasn’t exactly been doing so great with her own instincts lately.

She almost got Pete killed at Motel California, leaving him in that office by himself. She got a second chance at getting it right. And she can’t blow it.

“Okay.” She reaches into her pocket for the key and unlocks the cuffs. His wrists below them look raw and chafed. She feels just a little bit sorry for the way she’s been treating him. He was never tried for the murders, no one had the chance to find out whether he was responsible or not, but she was still treating him as guilty until proven innocent.

“You know it’s daylight. You won’t have your vamp strength.”

“We’ll worry about that if we have to.” He picks up the rock Sierra was struggling with and tosses it at least four feet away as if it weighs nothing.

“What were you shooting up, steroids?”

He shakes his head. “After I got bit, I worked third shift manual labor. I felt better at night, didn’t know why at the time, but those were the only jobs I could hold down for long. Mostly on the docks moving cargo, or night construction.”

“Oh.”

“After a while, I got into some underground fights, when I started feeling like ripping someone’s head off at work because they looked at me the wrong way. Thought maybe if I found a constructive outlet for feeling that way, I’d get better.”

“Underground street fights are constructive. That’s a new one.”

“I was bloodthirsty. Literally. I was just trying to find some place where that didn’t make me a freak.” He turns to look at her. “Those bites don’t just poison your body. It gets into your head, trying to turn you into a monster from the inside out.”

Sierra knows the biology of vampire venom. But there’s very few studies on its mental effects. Hunters get bitten without turning, disturbingly often. But the vampire responsible is usually staked within days if not hours, which renders the venom inert. There’s only a few hunters living with the long-term consequences. Sierra’s met one of them, a hunter from San Francisco who taught a crash course in working with shifter fae. Amy Sherwin had been a strange sort of contradiction, a twiggy, petite woman with pale skin and a grip like iron, dark eyes burning above shadowy smudged circles.

If Barrett had been like that…he would have added a physically intimidating physique to the intensity and controlled fury Sherwin had given off.

“You can’t tell me you don’t get it,” he continues, tossing a few more rocks aside before stepping back and studying the shrinking heap. “No one gets a job like yours without needing an outlet for something burning them up from the inside.”

She can’t exactly argue with him, and she doesn’t want to get into that.

“I can take it from here.” She doesn’t want Barrett around Pete if he’s bleeding. He’s sun-weakened and probably exhausted himself further moving all these rocks. He might not be able to stop himself from trying to feed. She holds out the cuffs.

“Really?”

“Look. You’ve told me a pretty convincing story, but I can’t afford to just take you at your word. It’s not just about me. I have to worry about Pete too, and if you’re lying just to make me stop watching you every second, both of us could die. Or worse, get turned.”

She doesn’t miss the slight flinch. Right, that was insensitive. But she doesn’t really care. Nothing about his story has really made him like her any better. Why hasn’t he told anyone else this? Does he know who the killer that night really was? Is he protecting them by taking the fall? If he thinks any of this is going to make them friends, he’s wrong. They’re not even reluctant allies. They’re just…not currently trying to kill each other, in the interests of saving Pete.

She reaches for another rock and winces.

“Just don’t,” Barrett says. “I’ve got this. I’ll tell you if I don’t. I’ll find him.”

Two weeks ago, caelumcxiv on R/Hi-Fi Rush posted screenshots of Zanzo's office taken with help of a camera mod. While I'm unsure if I can repost the images here, (I don't have any way to contact Caelum), I did want to talk about them. So here we go! Text incoming.

The first image is a closer look at the couch. In addition to revealing the full pose and intense expression of the body pillow image, Zanzo has his top secret Vandelay reports in plain sight. *Sigh...* Maybe Zanzo thinks hiding things in plain sight is a good strategy, but still.

The second and third images are closer looks at the book stacks. There's a Weekly Vandelay Comic issue featuring a story called Karate Dragon. ("Defeat The Enemies!") A Vandelay branded video game strategy guide ("You can clear this video game!!") - its cover shows a knight fighting a dark shadowy figure under a lightning filled sky and surrounded by fire. (A project from the now defunct Vandelay Game studios?) A Men's Fashion Magazine which is, you guessed it, also Vandelay branded. Beneath it is what I assume is another comic book called M-Y (Monkey? Mercy? Muscly? Mighty? Mayday? IDK) KAR.

It's difficult to see what the other books/magazines in the stack are because they're covered but there are some more comics. I can see a Vandelay logo magenta and white cover under Karate Dragon. Under Strategy Guide is COMIC, another M-Y KAR, and a book titled "M- F or E-". There's a strategy guide on the stack next to the men's fashion magazine. Are all of these individually textured like the vending machine drinks? 🤔

All of the cover models appear to be robots. The one on Karate Dragon looks similar to Ryuu from Street Fighter. Fashion model has slicked down hair, round purple glasses, a yellow jacket over a red turtleneck and green pants. (I'm picturing Zanzo dressed like that in my mind's eye. ✨)

Vandelay Technologies sure has their thumb in a lot of pies. I'm inclined to think this is Kale era exclusive. But we don't know for sure. 🤷‍♀️

Fifth image is a close up on the taped up papers. The top row is concept art and calculations for the ZP-1500 (that giant robot boss from Chapter 11).

Points of Interest Left-Right: First equation sheet. Zanzo is aware of the laser arm elbow joint stability. Sticky note I can't read. (I or / something h-e? Here?) Head of the Robot with parts labelled. "Light", "Eye", "Ear". The jaw is denoted as "Joe". (Out of universe, it's probably the artist's signature. In universe, Zanzo might have had a brain fizzle moment.) "20 × (5-x^2)=??" That doodle of a robot getting fried by a laser. "Huge!" written on sticky note. The laser has a 30 degree angle blast field. Second equation sheet. "Zanzo's Perfect Robot" and another labeled drawing - this one full body. Back "Booster", "Laser" arm, central "Core".

ZP-1500 apparently has an "eject" feature in the pelvic area. (Written in blue, harder to read.) Let's not speculate on that. 😅 (Developer/Designer Joke?)

The finance section of the Vandelay News is part of this paper collection. Roquefort's portrait is scribbled out. There's also a graph next to a Research Result paragraph. "Tampered" is written over the graph.

The sixth and final picture Caelum shared is a front facing perspective of raised brow Chai and serious Peppermint at Zanzo's computer. Cool. 👍

For anon asking about kiss scenes.

The thing is that almost all scenes are filmed multiple times. Whats ultimately seen when we watch is usually a blend of several takes.

There is like. Just so much going on on a set at any given moment. Also things might look really good from the angle the director is watching from but when they get to editing and post production it might look better or fit better for the story/scene setting from a different angle. And all those different angles are shot separately with different variations of lighting and sound and things so as to get the perfect shot to show viewers. Thats why theres so many different people watching things from so many different places to go over with the director and crew.

You've gotta remember that we're mostly watching things happen as if we're looking from the camera the director is behind. Its meant to be a view like that cos thats whats easiest to take in.

Ultimately tho things are shot from multiple different angles with many takes to get the most perfect final product possible. Theres a lot they have to take into consideration so they have to do it several times so that it feels right and flows across the story they're trying tell. There is a lot of adjusting of lines, costume, lighting, sound and everything else on the spot on any given set probably several times a day. Cos the story in your head changes a lot when you try to bring it to life and make it as much like it is in your head as possible. Cos when its in your head you can just make it the way you want it. When you're translating it theres a lot that has to be done to get it there in a way that other people can also see and understand.

And dont discount our actors!! They are fully professionals. They do this cos its their job. They know what they're doing and whats expected. Obviously kissing somebody is always gonna be intimate but they also are capable of holding space so that its just work most of the time. So yea it can be weird and awkward to keep having the same emotional kiss 40 times in 2 hours but its mostly uncomfortable just cos they need to hydrate and also wanna eat lunch some time this decade.

This is your Public Horror Series Reminder

FreakyLinks (October 2000 - June 2001)

A television series trying to be a cross between The X-Files and The Blair Witch Project (it was even produced by Haxan, just like the latter) - one of the early attempts to have a television series deep into the found footage horror and Internet horror styles. The series follows the story of Derek Barnes, a laidback surfer who after the death of his twin brother in mysterious circumstances takes back his website, OccultResearch.com and turns it into “FreakyLinks.com”, where he investigates and films bizarre, unusual and strange things all around the USA. While the characters are goofy and the website is supposed to be a fun “film and search the weird” one, in each episode Derek and his friends/collaborators end up on very serious, dramatic and tragic cases involving the supernatural. Dark secrets, brutal deaths, demonic possessions, hauntings, shapeshifters from hell... The series keep shifting between a sort of casual “supernatural comedy” a la Buffy and serious, dark horror, which might be a bit disorienting as you start thinking you’re in for fun (the main character has some Martin Mystery vibes) and then... cut to insane criminals in asylums, baby cribs filled with blood, suicides and people being tortured or buried alive. The tonal shift can be a bit abrupt.

Personal opinions: It has some very good ideas, some great basics, some fresh plots. It is notably quite interesting to see how they approach the overall story under an angle quite new for the time: you have a team of investigators, but they clearly do not belong to any official organizations or company (unlike X-Files) and as a result do face the troubles every-day persons have when trying to get into official investigations or other people’s business ; and on the flipside they are not “chosen ones”, they are not supernatural people, they are just ordinary humans that do what they can with what they have and that don’t even actually want to get involved into the supernatural but are forced into it (example: when faced for example with people asking for their help in cases of demonic possessions, they make it clear that they are not some sort of “ghost busters”, they just document things, and then go for the basic reaction everybody has in face of such claims “It is probably a mental illness at play here, and so that’s why these people need help”). Each episode is its own case, story, but there is an overarching mystery about the twin brother who might not be so dead, and the things he had discovered while opening the “OccultResearch” website. The episodes also followed each other, so that the consequences of one case might be talked about or impact the next one. Honestly, I see how it could have worked, there was work for a good show.

But it also is clearly a product of the early 2000s. The addition of humor out of fear a pure horror show wouldn’t work... the protagonists actions sometimes being very insensitive, making them look like jerks... the main character’s womanizing habits (and him randomly meeting promiscuous women left and right)... the attempt at introducing found footage style in the show, but the series not committing itself to it and only using it for a few scenes each episode... Mind you, on the flipside, the series was very aware of some of those things - for example the main protagonist is supposed to be flawed and by moments insensitive (which causes tensions and troubles with some of his team-mates), some episodes are much more comedic to balance the serious horror (such as the skunk ape episode), and while “found footage” isn’t the entire style of the show, the analysis of videos and recordings is always plot-relevant. But there’s still moments like the main protagonist refusing to pay a person with a piece of metal stuck in his head to know his “freak story”, while shaming him for even trying to ask for money, and ultimately filming him secretely with a hidden camera... And the show seems to show them in the right for doing that? Clearly mentalities have changed.

Also, the show does have some flaws, such as deus ex machinas popping sometimes to end episodes (notably - in this show every time you meet someone in a mental institutions, they will unexplicably be out of it to save the life of the protags at one point or another), or simple actions that are exaggerated for dramatic effects, but that rob the realism of the show (characters moving between places much too fast, or leaving rooms without being noticed when it is actually impossible). And I am sorry but the main’s actor is a bit over-dramatic in his facial expressions whenever he is supposed to be distressed, anxious or in fear, it makes the thing a bit too silly... His character and the way he acts would be very fitting for a comical horror show, but in serious scenes... not so much. In general, you oscillate in this show between good actors that make realistic roles and just people that over-play their role in exaggerated or funny ways.

It aired on Fox and only had one season of 13 episodes (which had a hiatus in the middle, notably due to the show’s renewal being officially announced mid-airing because of the low ratings - it was in the famous “dead friday slot”. But despite the low ratings, the cancellation did cause a minor outcry and attempts by fans to force FOX to renew the show - because you see, to promote the series, as with Blair Witch, they created the famous “FreakyLinks.com” website from the show for real, and the website itself was very popular back then (lots of people still remember fondly). The website’s popularity and the show’s quite decent quality for the time resulted in it gaining a small cult following.

The series is apparently quite hard to get officially nowadays, but hopefully someone posted the full show on Youtube - and given they are early 2000s recordings, it adds this little “old fashioned recording” feeling that helps with the overall ambiance.

Having my work be seen etc. I don’t have a big platform. When did you start your photography work? Hey I know that I’m on anon so that is a contraction but my page and work is far from ready but I’ll messge you off anon when it is..

I appreciate that so much thank you. I’m not sure I started taking pictures in like early middle school days, maybe even earlier. My dad took a lot of film photos when he was younger and did all that dark room stuff, he has boxes of pictures and I think it’s cute that I can see similar styles in his photos and mine. I think it’s always just been in me. I was the friend taking pictures of everyone at every after/school event (I have some veryyyyy old photo albums it’s cool to look back on because I’m like damn I was the same person back then haha) I had (and broke) several digital cameras as a kid/preteen) but I didn’t get my first dslr until I think 2007?

I had my first film camera gifted to me during this time, too. Which is a whole other love. I immediately started advertising myself on Craigslist (idk how I’m alive) and did a few jewelry/portrait/wedding/engagements shoots as a teen and that was pretty cool and huge for my age and experience level looking back. I’m like damn, I did pretty well for myself as a dumb 17/18 yr old. I’m trying to work my way back into that now actually, slowly this time though. Bless all those people who gave me a shot and believed in lil ol me then. Lots of cool memories from that time period but it’s wild to me that I did that.

Anyway. I’m not sure on tips aside from ones that are personal to me because I don’t know what kind of photography you’re into? One of mine is like don’t take ten pictures of the same thing because it’ll make you have a mental breakdown when all of them are good but subtly different and you can’t pick one - but that’s me - I also have ocd and that helps nothing. When starting out that’s probably a good idea though to learn angles and lighting. Take pictures of everything. Learn your own personal style, everyone’s is different even if it’s similar, we all see different things. Learn your camera, learn about lighting and how to edit eventually. If you want to shoot people there’s a huge social aspect so you can work on that. There’s things I don’t even know after 100 years because the technical side doesn’t rly do it for me, I just run on intuition and vibes. We’re all always learning still. Its ok! I don’t have a large platform either especially on here, half my followers are deactivated - it’s dying out on here and I also won’t be on here eventually all together. But if you’re talking about notes/likes I’d suggest tagging your pictures! I find it kinda embarrassing but it’s necessary if that’s what you’re after.

That’s something I actually struggle with because I don’t worry about that stuff much, especially on here. I’ve never cared about that sort of validation, tumblr and instagram even facebook have always been just a photo diary to me - everything’s a diary haha. Even if it seems I overshare I’m really actually not? I’m super private and things make me uncomfortable. (I don’t share my writing either..) Notes are never why I post or even take photos it’s all very personal to me, there’s a deep private love there for me that I can’t put into words but! It’s ok to care and when you want to switch over to working with the public and getting back/into freelance photography (which I do, and maybe you will too someday) advertising is absolutely important, it’s hard for someone like me that finds it extremely cringe to self promote/overly tag everything because that’s never been my vibe or why I do it but I’m slowly working on it because I have to - it’s sort of a large mental obstacle for me. But don’t worry about that right now. Don’t get caught up on things like that honestly, it doesn’t mean anything. If people see and appreciate your pictures that’s lovely but there’s tons of reasons why you may not get notes that mean nothing to the quality of your pics. I see posts circulate with 10000 notes of a blurry eyeball and see an incredible picture of something with 5 notes. On tumblr notes mean nothing, don’t let it influence anything. You’re just starting out and your work is for you right now, and in my opinion it always should be in a way. Give it time. I post way more on my Instagram than here and my account is private, like I said I’m working on that aspect myself still haha. I am working on a different account though and slowly a website! So yes keep at it, and yes tag away, can even pin your posts even if it feels embarrassing - not everyone sees it that way, promise.

Don’t stress just do your thing. Find other photographers on here. But I wouldn’t really worry about tumblr too much, there’s other and better sites to get your work seen.

Crowley, Good Omens 2, Episode 1, hiding Gabriel

What do we learn about the sideburns?

The sideburns are immediately long. They look even from the front but have differences when examined closely. The right sideburn widens a little more from its own center at its bottom. It also looks a little more fuzzy and full in hair. The left sideburn looks more like it slants downward, in line with Crowley's jaw, from the ear toward his mouth.

That means the left side is considered the lighter side for this scene. The lighting in the scene itself shows much the same.

The length is because Crowley is with both Gabriel and Aziraphale. Something about Gabriel's presence makes them the longest they are generally seen, at least for the earlier parts of the season. Episode 6 will show us this length even after Gabriel leaves.

Is the brighter red streak visible?

Yes. Crowley's hair is even more saturated in red than his last visit, yet an even more saturated red streak can still be found in it above his left eye.

Is the hairstyle different from the present day Crowley scene before it?

Yes. Aside from the longer sideburns, the loose tendril to the right of his face is gone. The hair on that side is more smooth.

Compared to his earlier visit when encountering Gabriel, the color is more saturated. The general shape still swoops up and tilts to his right in a curve. The curve indents more from the left. Sometimes the curving hair seems to separate a little based on Crowley's emotion.

Much like in Hell, the hair on the left side is brighter; the hair on the right side is darker.

Additional Notes:

In terms of how I'm currently interpreting the story, the bookshop home base is basically marking rank through latent memory between these three characters. Since Gabriel has amnesia, and even going by Jim, Crowley outranks Jim/Gabriel. Crowley may be a former demon, and not an angel, but the space is still going to respect this past rank found in memory, especially given the context of what's happening.

The space isn't too concerned with Aziraphale's rank since the space belongs to Aziraphale as it is. Besides, Aziraphale asked for Crowley's help.

The actions within the scene show Crowley as the decision-maker of all three, taking in Aziraphale's suggestion but otherwise directing the two angels, who both listen to him. Jim/Gabriel makes a childish and displeased expression at being told to stay inside, so that Crowley and Aziraphale can look after him, but ultimately still doesn't argue.

This longer sideburns effect probably has another meaning, related to memory in some way, I haven't figured out because I think Crowley and Aziraphale take certain actions to make sure this effect, whatever it is really doing, is on Crowley in the later part of the season (longer than usual shortness in general among humans, not this long in all settings).

As for the scene itself, it has a top angle that could be Heaven looking down into the bookshop. Or not. There was a top angle when the Bentley started driving earlier.

Despite all three characters being visibly on screen, there is a notable thing happening in how the camera pans down during the miracle. Crowley's entire left arm is hidden from our view temporarily.
