The Crow
It can't rain all the time.
Sort of my own version based on the comics and the movie.

The worst part of being a fan of The Crow? Noone gives a fuck about the comics and it's all "the movie, the movie, the movie, Brandon Lee, Brandon Lee" and like...i really like the movie and Brandon, he acted the fuck outta the role, and the movie is really good....BUT the movie is an adaptation of a comic book.
If we all shit our pants when a new adaptation came because "it's disrespectful of the original" or everytime we got a new Superman or Joker because it's "disrespectful to George Reeves/Heath Ledger" everyone would hate us.
I would be angry/dissapointed that noone reads the original Crow comics but basicly no fans of superheroes and the CBM genre reads the comics these days so that's just a general issue.
So seeing most peoples reaction to the new Crow trailer being "but the original, the original, it's disrespectful to the original and to Brandon" makes me feel like i am listening to a group of 5-year olds whine.

Actually, my favourite thing about the original The Crow comic is just how much of it is about Eric openly grieving Shelly & the life they had together in the middle of his unhinged quest for vengeance. He cries remembering their Christmas together & the domestic life they had, he hallucinates her in their empty bed in the ruined house they painted together, he can't stop thinking of her face & body even as his dreams turn to ruin. Shelly in Eric's flashbacks, meanwhile, is characterized as someone more than a box shaped like a Gaussian blurred wife in a white dress for the author to tick and give the protagonist something to avenge.
And that grief for that person that she was, in spite of driving him to self-harm, derangement & brutality, lets Eric hold onto his humanity as well. He adopts Gabriel the cat after her old lady owner was also murdered by a gang as a gift for their would be first anniversary & gives her another home at Captain Hook's when it's time for him to leave this mortal coil for good. He gives Shelly's ring to neglected little Sherri as the first gift she's ever had, treats her gently, urges her mom to get clean ASAP & lets Officer Albrecht know that she needs protection. Even when Funboy, one of the members of the gang, talks with Eric & tells him he doesn't know why he is the way he is, doesn't see the way to be better & thinks resisting Eric pointless, he lets him take drugs to overdose and have a relatively peaceful end instead of killing him himself. Not only bc of Eric's own personality buried under layers of rage, depression and disgust, but also bc of Shelly's retained influence on him beyond the grave.
You can tell that, in spite of its flaws, this is a comic made by someone intimately familiar with trauma of losing a loved one & how the grief that comes with it messes with you. It's too bad that the later comics & adaptations decided that the edgy anti-hero vigilante shit was too cool to let all of that distract the viewer from it

Thoughts on The Crow(2024)
The director really fucked up by deciding to retell the story of Shelly and Eric. Fans know that the Crow is a legacy character so just tell a different story with different characters while still having the Crow be resurrected. EVERYTHING about this new movie is completely different from the 90s version but some studio exec was like "ayo, you still gotta call the leads Eric & Shelly so the fans recognize them." No, I don't recognize these characters! You shoulda just called them Alice and Brian or something cuz that's not my Eric & Shelly. I hate when writers wanna tell original stories but they gotta use recognizable characters to do it, which leaves a bad taste.
