Vitakinetics - healers and scientists

About the discipline

Vitakinetics, not to be confused with kineticists, are on the more uncommon side of magical disciplines, as it is a difficult discipline to master. This type of adept magic utilizes life energy as its source of power. Every living thing, animal or human, mortal or sorcerer needs life energy to stay alive, and a healthy body generates a certain amount of it. It takes a vitakinetic to be able to control this life energy, however. With training vitakinetics learn to generate this energy on command, and to expel it through physical proximity. Vitakinesis is a healing-focused discipline, and those who have chosen it as their discipline usually work as doctors or scientists. While vitakinesis only gives its beholder and advantage in healing-focused science magic, many practice other types of science as well, as an extension of their profession, rather than their discipline. Some researchers consider vitakinesis and energy throwing sister disciplines due to the generation of energy within the body. Uses of vitakinetic energy can be roughly divided into three different groups: healing, defense and offense. 

Healing capabilities

Vitakinetics have two different types of magical healing they may choose from. One vitakinetic doesn’t have to solely specialize in one or the other, and many alternate between the two methods depending on the situation.

Energy healing

Energy healing is vitakineticism in its rawest form, and what most people think of when they hear of magical healing. When using raw life energy to heal, the vitakinetic transfers life energy to their patient. The typical way of doing this is placing their hand near or on the wound, or if the ailment is unseen, simply placing their hand on or near the patient. This type of healing works best on acute injuries, but a talented vitakinetic could possibly use it on something like lead-based liver damage as well, or to hold back acute symptoms of illness. For example, if a patient with pneumonia was experiencing a collapsed lung, the vitakinetic treating them could heal their lung, but not get rid of the illness itself. This type of healing also doesn’t affect things like psychological damage, terminal illness, infection, disabilities, chronic pain or certain types of injury. It is not possible for a vitakinetic to heal someone’s wound and accidentally make them not need reading glasses anymore, for example. No type of vitakinetic healing is foolproof, either. Sometimes a wound may be healed, but the effects of it on the part of the body in question might persist. The advantage of energy healing is that it is very quick to take effect. It does, however, have its weaknesses and risks. For one, it takes a lot of energy from the vitakinetic depending on the size and gravity of the ailment. The average vitakinetic will be completely exhausted after healing a fully grown adult with a life-threatening injury. This leaves the vitakinetic vulnerable. When dealing with grave injuries there is also the risk of the patient ending up in a state of shock if the healing is done too quickly. This means that energy healing takes a very talented and experienced vitakinetic, and in combat situations it is advised to only use it to stabilize a patient. The appearance of vitakinetic life-energy varies somewhat, and some think that the appearance of a particular vitakinetic’s life-energy corresponds with their personality, however this is just speculation and nearly impossible to prove, as there is no objective way of assigning visual elements to something as abstract as human personality. Vitakinetic life-energy’s appearance may range from a dull glow to resembling fire or even electricity. This energy can be any color, but some notable common ones are dull greens and blues, gold, white and opalescent. When doing energy healing, the vitakinetic’s hands typically let off warmth as well.

Science magic

Science magic is the more technical, modest version of vitakinetic healing. It’s slower to take effect, but it takes less energy and can help with a wider variety of ailments. For example, a vitakinetic may channel their magic into medical plants or chemicals to heighten their healing properties. Not even science magic can heal everything, but it can often alleviate symptoms. Science magic in healing can be many things, like mobility aids that utilize sigils, painkillers that are quick and precise, more effective treatments for infections and illnesses, healing broken bones without a cast, et cetera. Not everyone who practices science magic is a vitakinetic, but vitakinetics do get an advantage in the field from being able to distill their magic into their creations. This distilled magic is more potent, and the vitakinetic can do more without being subject to vitakinetic exhaustion.

Defensive capabilities

Vitakinetics have one incredibly useful way of defending themselves: self-healing. The second that they become injured, their body starts healing itself automatically. This makes strong vitakinetics incredibly hard to kill, which is fortunate considering the discipline’s rarity. Self-healing takes a lot more time and energy than healing a similar injury on another person, as depending on the gravity of the injury the body might be working in overdrive, especially considering that larger wounds also deplete life energy. Small cuts and fractures are typically very easy for any vitakinetic to overcome, but a life-threatening injury could kill a weaker vitakinetic, and even stronger ones can typically only maintain a state of staying alive until they can be seen by another medical professional. Some vitakinetics have been known to be able to regrow small parts of themselves on their own, like eyes or fingers, but this is exceedingly rare. Things that can kill any vitakinetic are typically ones that start shutting the entire body down systematically, faster than the vitakinetic can keep up with. These things include, but are not limited to: god-killer weapons, the Sceptre of the Ancients, certain types of necromancer magic and certain illnesses. Vitakinetics are not immune to zombie bites, vampirism or remnants. Vitakinetics typically only sustain scar tissue from large wounds that take a lot of energy and time to heal.

Offensive capabilities

Vitakinetics also have one way of causing harm with their discipline, along with being able to use weapons. Some vitakinetics have a moral adversity against using their discipline to harm people, but they are capable of it nonetheless. This involves using their energy to overload the opponent, usually resulting in shock. Some experienced vitakinetics know how to simply make their opponent pass out instead, however. The downside to this ability is that it expends valuable energy on something that would much easier be done with a physical weapon of some sort. It can also leave the vitakinetic vulnerable if exhaustion starts to set in in the middle of battle. Because of this, most vitakinetics carry a weapon on the field.

Vitakinetic exhaustion

Vitakinetic exhaustion is a condition which sets in when a vitakinetic is nearing the limits of how much energy they can expend. It is the body’s way of making sure that the vitakinetic doesn’t use up the energy they need to live. Compared to the exhaustion state of other disciplines, like gist users, it is relatively mild. It can be painful, but not to an excruciating extent. Many describe it as a feeling of tenderness in the muscles, the slowing down of cognitive functions, and a general feeling of tiredness and sluggishness. It gets worse the more one tries to power through it. There have been no documented cases of uninjured vitakinetics dying from using up all their energy on healing, as the body will typically make itself go into a state of delirium or make the body faint until it has regained its energy. This condition may also weaken the immune system, and lowers the vitakinetic’s capability to heal themselves, often leading to scarring even from smaller wounds. You can tell a lot about a vitakinetic just by looking at what kinds of scars they have, if any. Perpetual cycles of vitakinetic exhaustion can leave the vitakinetic with a considerable amount of scar tissue if they sustained injuries in this state.

Vitakinetics during the war

Vitakinetics were highly involved on both sides of the war as medics and scientists, and were vital in the efforts of both sides. You could recognise a Sanctuary medic by their uniform, which was either white or light green in colour, the latter only in countries where white typically symbolizes death. The uniform belts had daisies embroidered on them, and the uniforms typically also included protective goggles. Stationary medics and scientists who stayed within the Sanctuaries were assigned uniforms with higher collars and ankle-length hems, for better protection against chemical spills. Field medic uniforms had tighter collars and shorter hems for better mobility. Both types of uniforms also included white trousers, shoes and gaiters that started just below the knee. These uniforms were generally regarded as very aesthetically pleasing. Mevolent’s side had uniforms that were similar in build, but aesthetically very different. Not all medics and scientists were vitakinetics, but it was more common than not. During the war field medics often traveled with troops on missions, and stationary medics and scientists did research in the Sanctuary facilities. Research topics ranged from weaponry, the study of different magical disciplines, remnants, and medical plants. These scientists are to thank for most that we know of gists and sensitives. Mevolent’s side’s scientists were responsible for some rather unethical experiments. The line between stationary and field personnel was not rigid: if work was slow in one area, vitakinetics would be transferred to other work, and if a particular vitakinetic’s skills were needed in one place, they would see to it, regardless of their position in the Sanctuary. Some vitakinetics underwent additional training in psychology and served as therapists and psychiatrists in addition to their roles as physical healers.

How you meet them outside the Cafe

Clyde/Spot [Rabbit Boy]

"Delivery for... Master?"

The word dies in the delivery boy's throat as the front door opens. You stand in the hall of your appartment, groggy from being woken up on your day off. Your barely conscious mind struggles to find the connection between the familiar face at first. Clyde choses to feign innocence as the pieces finally click; nearly dropping the package in hand as your lips form to his name.

"Sp-" You pause. "Clyde?"

He keeps his disappointment at bay with a shy smile. "Y-yea.. it's me. I thought the name on the order was familiar, but I didn't think it would really be you."

You prop against the doorframe, joining him in jollity as more memories cross your mind. "Oh, right- I remember you saying you did delivery work once."

Clyde wishes he could hide completely behind the box's small frame. He was prone to being bashful, but standing here, seeing you in your casual, comfortable environment was too much. If he tinted his head far enough, he could even see into your living room.

He scratches behind his ear to hide its tick. "Yea, I do bigger stuff on weekends, but on weekends I do food service if I need the extra cash. Um, this was from the bakery about a block over. I think it's a cake - not that I saw being noisy.

You take the box as he hands it over. Bit strange considering you didn't order anything, but free is free. Must be from a coworker. "'Sweet! Thank you so much for delivering this to me, Clyde. I'll be sure to thank you properly the next time you stop by the store."

He blushes. "It was my pleasure."

"Well, see you later!"

"S-see you soon, master." The word sits on his tongue as you shut the door, tainting it with the weight of his crime. Clyde slumps against your door. He's terrible - a horrible pet for lying to you like that; but it was the easiest way to confirm your location with looking directly through your window. He prays the bear along with the dessert will provide you with comfort at night - and that you don't squeeze it too hard.

Pauline/Belle [Cowwoman]

"We're here!"

You wake with a jolt as a large hand crashes around your shoulder. The woman to your left chuckles at your fright, offering you a hand to help you out of her truck. Leaning in to take it, she scoops you up by your arms and pulls you out herself. The bright sunlight warms your skin; cattle roaming freely in the distance.

"A beaut, ain't she?"

You nod in agreement as you look around her farm. As the head chef who quit a few months into your few year, Pauline often huffed about how she'd get this place fixed up and never look back when she was upset. Eventually that day would come, but there was one thing she couldn't leave behind.

Pauline sighs. "Yup, she's gorgeous, but nowhere near a knockout like you." She clears her throat as she glances your way. "Uh- anyway. Thanks for stopping by, Y/n. It gets real lonely round here without ya... And other folks, of course.

Saber [Catboy]

"Get the fuck out before they get here!"

A sharp hiss comes from behind a makeup room door, followed by a body shoved from its space. The figure in the doorframe sweeps the dust off their shirt and goes to sit back down; rushing to fix their hair and makeup as they spot you through the mirror.

"Y/n - Hello! What a wonderful surprise." The feline purrs, twisting in his chair to face you. His eyeshadow is uneven due to him booting his entire team before you came, but he still smiles at you like there wasn't a care in the world.

"Afternoon, Saber." You walk up to the table and set the bags you brought on it. His stomach grows as the scent of the food wafts through the air, but he plays it and his embarrassment off with a stretch.

Saber leans against the back of his chair. "Ah, I'm so glad the cafe started doing deliveries. With how many shoots there's been lately, I haven't had an hour to myself - or my needs."

The greedy cat strikes his claws up to the string of your apron, but you don't seem to notice as you pull the containers from the bag.

"I know. Management is still discussing renting us outside the cafe, but for now it's just the food." You turn and pat his head. "Sorry, kitty. I have other orders to take care of."

The calm in Saber's gaze turns frantic as he grabs onto your sleeve. "Wait! Before you go - feed me the first bite?"

Shanna/Bo [Sheep Girl]

After a long week of work, a small group of friends decided to take you out for the night to let off some steam. Standing in line for some club, the last thing you expect to see was a familiar face and a more recognizable pair of horns.

"Name?"

"Shanna?"

"That's not on the list... huh?" Trailing off, the slightly irritated look on the woman's face turns to shock and bashful. "Y-y/n?! What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing."

"My dad has me outside some nights for extra cash. Gosh - this is so embarrassing... D-do you wanna come in? Normally you'd need a reservation, but I can get you in no problem. I'll pay for whatever you want too."

"Shane! We need your help!"

Shanna flinches at the booming voice from within the bar. "Coming!" She looks back at you; the stress of whatever bothered her melting as she gazes into your eyes. She stammers. "Ah- I'll be right back. Please don't tell anyone I work here... or leave."

Prince [Hyena Boy]

Stepping off your final bus, you instinctively groan at the noise from the adjacent street. Your apartment was housed right across the street from a local college. Not quite upperclass, but definitely a name that was other here. Things normally weren't that loud, but with the end of the semester came chaos. You really needed to look for a new place to live.

"Boss? That you?"

You pay no mind to the person waving their arms in your direction - till they're running your way through busy traffic.

"Boss!"

As you finally turn to look, you're tackled by a body with the physique of an athlete; kept from falling by his swift movements as he twists on his heels and hugs you to his chest. You're damn near ready to toss him back into the streets when he starts to kiss all over your face, until his dog tags start to smack you in the chin.

"Ashur?"

The hyena whines as he lets you go. "Ah, man, don't call me that. Prince is way cooler - since it's the name ya gave me and all."

You look him up and down. He's wearing the colors of that school; and has a broken nose. "What are you doing here?"

Prince grins. "To fucking party, obviously! That and I got kicked outta my last school. Some bitch was dissing my collar and therefore you since your name's on it, so I had to beat his ass."

He points to his nose. "Trust me when I say this is nothin compared to him."

"Your collar has what now?"

Prince rubs his shoulders. "So what's going on? You live there?"

You nod as his gestures towards the building behind you. "Yeah. Been here for a couple years."

"Sweet! Let's head in! Maybe I'll look in to living here too!"

Prince follows behind you as you head up to your floor. He feels a little bad for lying to the fraternities that came to him in greeting - but he didn't come here for them.

Wisteria [Floral Monster]

"Hello, my dears. Have you missed me much?"

Visiting a museum on your day off, you're alerted to a familiar voice as you head out to the garden. A frequent ccustomerm and acquaintance of yours stands by a few rose bushes. With a wave of her hand, the drooping petals ripen to full glory.

"Wisteria?"

A new collection of flower buds spread across the entire field, and the woman's crown as she looks at you. The petals of the large rose in place of her upper face bleed from pure white to pink.

"Y/n? Is that you, darling? What a lovely surpise."

You join her side. "What are you up to?"

"Tending to my little sprouts. I was in charge of designing this garden when the museum was first built."

"Wasn't it built in the early 1900's?"

"They are like my children." Wisteria continues. "I've worked on countless projects, but they are the ones I find myself drawn to the most. I am happy you've finally met."

You wave at the flowers for some reason. Wisteria muffles a laugh.

"I don't mean to sound rude, but could you leave us for a while? I'd like to be alone with them a little while long."

"Oh - sure."

The second you're out of sight, the newly formered blossoms bloom. Wisteria plucks one, bringing it to their face.

"Yes, my loves. They are the one I've been speaking of. What do you think?"

Scout/Bear [Wolfman]

"Come on, little guy. Outta the cage."

Bus broken down on the road, you glance out the window only to find someone you'd seen countless times before. After hounding the bus driver to let you off, you sneak up on the man till your suspensions where confirmed.

"Scout?"

The cigarette held in his teeth falls from his lips from the fright. He stamps it out; aiming to avoid further scaring the racoon in the cagehe held. He hushes the creature as it chitters, setting the cage on the floor and waiting for it to scamper off before facing you. He takes off his coat and tosses in the the boot of his truck so the smell of ash won't reach you; looking down at you like he was in the middle of a dream he didn't want to wake from.

"Y/n. Thought my ears were playing a trick on me. What are you doing out here? It isn't safe to be out on your own."

You point at the bus. " Broke down. What were you doing?"

"Family called out a rodent infestation. It was just their son letting some poor raccoon into their home and feeding it chips. Wanted me to kill him, but they didn't care what I did long as it was gone."

"Oh.. That's sweet of you."

Bear leans against the bumper of his car; hiding the wag of his tail against its metal. He looks at you expectantly, before glancing away; hoping you'll ask for help first. It'll ease his conscious when he finally gets you on board; and remind him that eventually he'll have to begrudgingly let you leave.

"So.." He begins. "Need a ride?'

Now that it’s been two weeks since I last shoved a bunch of STAR WARS recs at everyone and about that much time since the OBI-WAN KENOBI show finished, it’s time for me to cry about more fic with you guys, because that’s enough time that you all will have read them and need more recs, right? You tossed and turned in your bed. Lately, your insomnia had been much worse. Being scared to go to sleep in fear of having visions, seeing monsters- well, you know how demigod dreams are.

After rolling around for a few minutes, you gave up. You grabbed your blanket and dagger and slid on your f/c vans, walking out of the g/p cabin.

You sat on the cabin's steps and huffed, admiring the stars and all the cabins around you. It was past curfew so technically you weren't supposed to be outside of your cabin, but the sense of doing something wrong gave you a rush of adrenaline and an idea. You knew exactly where to go.

A few minutes later you were standing in front of the door of Bunker 9, the place where your best friend Leo Valdez spent most of his time. You knocked on it, praying he was in there and not back at his cabin. Eventually, Leo opened the door, his chocolate brown curls sticking up in numerous places. He was wearing a white grease-stained t-shirt and grey sweatpants, and you thought he looked adorable.

"Y/N?" he asked, rubbing his eyes.

"Hi," you said. "I, um, can't sleep."

"So you came to see me?" he asked in a suggestive tone. You hit his arm.

"Not like that, Valdez!" you chided. "I just didn't know where else to go. Everyone else is sleeping."

He gave you his amazing lopsided grin and opened the door, gesturing for you to come inside.

"Welcome to the bunker, milady."

Once you were inside, he led you to one of his worktables and gestured at a pile of screws and other working equipment on a worktable

"I'm only up because of this," he admitted. You sat on the worktable bench and swung your legs, Leo leaning against the wall in front of you. "How come you're up?"

You sighed. If you couldn't tell your best friend, who could you tell?

"Insomnia. Again. Is it okay if I sleep here?"

"Of course, Y/N," Leo said, giving you his heartwarming smile. "What kind of best friend would I be if I didn't?"

You sighed, butterflies filling your stomach. Ever since you had arrived at camp, you and Leo had been inseparable. You did everything together- from quests to training to goofing off and hanging out with each other. Especially hanging out together. You and Leo were both very touchy-feely people, so it wasn't abnormal for you to crash in his cabin or bunker whenever. Just as long as neither of you got caught. 

But tonight, something just felt different. Leo's sleepy gaze seemed to linger on you a little longer, and you thought he looked a little more handsome than usual, greasy shirt and all. 

You sat on the workbench, swinging your legs back and forth while Leo stood in front of the bench. 

"So, are you going to show me this project of yours?" 

He smiled sheepishly and yawned. "Actually, it's a little later than than I thought, and now that you're here I might as well go to sleep."

You grinned at him and put your hands on the top of his head, playing with his mop of curly brown hair. "Okay, hammer brain."

Leo put his arms around your waist and got even closer to you so that he was standing in between your legs. Butterflies filled your stomach and your vision started to go blurry. Slowly by slowly, without thinking, you inched your heads closer together, and then... he pulled away, clearing his throat. 

You jumped back the second he did, sad at the loss of contact. Leo cleared his throat. 

"Um, anyways, do you have a sleeping bag?"

"Uh, I actually left it back at the cabin. Was in such a rush to get out here... and stuff..." you trailed off. 

"Right. So here's the plan. You're either going to have to sleep in the tiny twin bed with me, or, sleep on the floor. But the floor isn't very comfortable. I don't recommend it."

You blushed a deep shade of red. Yes, you have spent nights here before. Yes, you and Leo have been friends for years. And yes, he has been showing a little more affection recently, which you loved, don't get me wrong. But sleeping in a bed together? That was a whole other level of intimacy. 

You attempted to play off your nervousness with humor. "Sleeping  with you?" 

"Oh, come on. Not like that, Y/N. I mean, unless you want it to be," he said, wiggling his eyebrows.

"You wish, Valdez," you responded, making a face at him. 

Finally, the two of you crawled into the bed, backs to each other. There wasn't much space between you due to the small nature of the bed, but at that moment you wanted nothing more than for Leo to hold you and protect you from all the bad dreams you might have. 

You tossed and turned once again, but sleep just refused to find you. After what seemed like forever, Leo finally broke the silence. 

"You okay? If you're not comfortable, I can sleep on the floor, or on a workbench, just to make sure you're comfortable," he said, concern lacing his voice. You turned around to face each other, and once again, your foreheads were inches away. 

"Yeah," you said hastily. "I'm just having some bad dreams about... some stuff."

Leo propped himself up with his elbow and pushed a strand of hair behind your ear. He looked so.. caring, so kind and patient, and like he wanted to hear anything you had to say, so you decided to spill your guts to him. After all, if you couldn't trust Leo, could you trust anyone?

"I've been having these dreams about... my friend from the Titan war. And...and... Gaea coming back," you said, wiping a tear you didn't realize had fallen. "I'm worried about her coming back and... you getting hurt."

Leo cupped your face in his hand and wiped more tears as they came. "Hey, listen to me," he said in such a soothing and comforting tone it just made you cry more. "You are so incredibly brave and strong, and after everything you've been through, it only makes sense that you dream like this. It's not stupid. But I promise, I'm not going anywhere. Neither is anyone else."

You took his hand and put it on your heart. "You can't control that. Only the Fates can."

Leo smiled and continued to wipe your tears. "I mean for now, at least. You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not."

You played with his curls and looked into his eyes, feeling like you were really, truly seeing him for the first time. Behind the jokes and the humor, he was just a broken boy who was doing his best to fix and help the people he cared about, like you. Especially you. More than you knew. 

You weren't sure if it was the lack of sleep, the weariness, or the heat of the moment or what, but you never thought you'd have the guts in a million years to say "I love you, Leo Valdez."

He brought his head so close that your foreheads were touching, and he stroked your cheek, his eyes shimmering. 

"I love you more, Y/N L/N." He was about to lean in, but he once again faltered. "Um, just so you know, I'll probably regret this tomorrow morning. But if you hate it we can always pretend it never happened and part our separate ways, and-" he paused. "Never mind. Okay."

And it was that moment when Leo did something you never thought he would do. Before you had time to comprehend what he was saying, he closed the gap between the two of you, cupping your face and gently pulling you on top of him. 

His hard, chapped lips connected with your plump, soft ones, and everything fell alright. He kissed you slowly and sweetly, being very careful, as if he were worried you would break. 

The way he kissed you with such care and compassion was a reminder was that he loved you, he was here, and that he was never letting go, no matter what. 

When you finally pulled away, you collapsed on his chest, both of your faces a blushing mess. 

Leo rubbed the nape of his neck. "Wow," he breathed. "I didn't expect you to actually kiss back, and, um, I was really worried that I'd ruined the friendship, and I wanted to make sure you were comfortable with it too, so um-" he rambled, but you cut him off. 

"Leo, I've been wanting you to do that for longer than I'd like to admit," you breathed, your voice barely a whisper. 

Leo laced his fingers with yours and kissed you on the forehead. "Okay good. Now let's get some sleep, mi amor."

And there you were sleeping on top of your repair boy, his arms wrapped around you, your legs tangled together, your heart ready to burst. You had so much love for this boy, and you wanted the world to know. 

"Comfortable?" he asked, as you drifted off to sleep, happy in his arms. Yes, you thought. 

Just as you were about to sleep. Leo whispered something in your ear which stayed with you forever. 

"I love you, Y/N. I'm never letting go. Ever."

You never had bad dreams again.

Happy fun times are over. This boat ride is so incredibly unlike the last.

Tyrri still stands at the edge of the bow, looking at the horizon as the Farlands come into view.

The four easily blast through the first section of the dungeon to the point where it’s just cutscened away. You go into the entrance to the Wellspring and arrive at the endpoint after a fade to black

What’s at that endpoint, you might ask?

Well, do you remember the snake that guarded the wellspring? How I mentioned that it was easily long enough to reach to the outside of the cave

Well, something managed to outrun it. Someone, specifically

Extending into the furthest recesses of the cave is the Guardian of the Wellspring. It appears to be unconscious

Sebastian, Lia, and Elias all get to work getting them sorted out and conscious again, urging Tyrri to go onward into

The Final Dungeon: The Heart of Wild Magic

Rather than my typical fare of making dungeons into impassable mazes, the Heart is actually rather straightforward

A massive cavern that spirals downward into a single centrepoint, studded with the same magenta crystals as the Wellspring that glow with greater and greater intensity as you go further down

Cat’s sprite is actually visible and rendered in from the furthest up point, but it isn’t clear what she’s doing

 The strongest elementals in the game reside here, the Elder series elementals (Elder Tempest, Elder Frost, Elder Abyss, etc.)

Every now and again there are streams of water that pour into the cavern, interacting with them restores some SP to the entire party

Also present in here is one of the strongest staffs in the game, though I have not decided what it does

I have decided, however, that it does not exist in a conventional chest; rather, it is made entirely of crystal and is lodged into a wall in an offshoot cave

Reaching the bottom of the cave triggers the last cutscene

Catena is desperately chipping away at a cave wall with a small dagger, occasionally looking over at Tyrri’s notes

She’s muttering stuff like “please work” and “what does it mean” to herself; she clearly hasn’t had the time to comprehensively look over the notes and understand what they mean

Tyrri approaches her and tries to talk her out of whatever she’s doing

Catena shakily gets up, steadying herself against the wall, before screaming “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND! YOU NEVER COULD!” and slashing Tyrri across the cheek with the dagger

Tyrri quickly blasts it out of her hand, but the damage has been done

The two steady themselves and enter into…

The Final Boss: Catena Novi

This is the Osvald-style battle where it’s fundamentally against another scholar

No tricks, no gimmicks (lying), just a good old fashioned mage’s duel

Catena is very good at buffing herself; in addition to the usual Elemental Attack/Defence buffs, she has stuff to give her spells added effects (like Crystalline Magic), reflection and absorption skills, access to stuff like Advanced Magic and focused spells, the like

Her AI will very specifically target Tyrri with debuffs but not with single-target spells, the only damage she needs to worry about is from AoE attacks

Her boost mode will summon Elder elementals and keep them around; none of that Harvey/Tormented Blaze/Dark Entity shit of sacrificing them for more powerful attacks

If I knew how to code I’d give her the most intelligent AI of the entire rogues gallery. This is the Pokemon Champion Cynthia of Project OCtopath

Her spells might change slightly depending on which elementals are out (ie: ice spells when Elder Frost are on the field)

Design-wise she actually looks rather plain

Her clothes look a little torn and her hands a covered in scratches

She is, notably, completely slumped over for the entire fight; her face is completely shrouded in shadow save for her mouth, which is set in a hard line that’s difficult to draw emotion from

Boost mode has her raise her head up, but a veil of hair still covers her face

Hitting half health triggers a cutscene rather than staying on the battle screen

“Let me… let me HAVE this, Tyrri! Please! You don’t – you CAN’T understand what this means! I can’t fail so far in!”

“Cat, I’m sorry. I really am. But this is too far – you’re destroying this cave, this magic. Do you have any idea what the consequences of your actions could be?”

“Shut UP! I WILL NOT FAIL HERE!”

Tyrri thinks to herself “No time like the present to test out that theory” and grabs one of the fallen crystals

Mistake. That was a mistake. Catena Novi is no fool, and is very quickly able to pick up on what that means

“Fascinating.” She magically pulls three crystals towards them and lets them hover around her head

“So that’s what your research meant. Father will be pleased.”

“Father?”

With that little tidbit of knowledge, the battle transitions into…

I feel like Jaehee isn't super into anime but it's mostly because she doesn't have time to watch it. Introduce her to some of your favourite shows and she'll cherish the time.

She doesn't get time off very often so most of your time spent together would have to be early morning or late night.

If it's early, Jaehee will be subtly checking her clock to make sure she's not running late. She gets caught up in whatever she's doing with you so she has to be careful so that she doesn't forget about work.

If it's late, you'll have a sleepy Jaehee on your hands. She wants to give you her undivided attention but sometimes her busy schedule catches up to her and she'll start to doze off. She finds your company far too relaxing!

Jaehee is a dedicated and supportive partner who will always take time to make sure you feel cared about.

FIRST OFF MY CONSOLES

I personally own

An original gameboy i recently got from a family member because they were clearing out stuff and knew i liked old stuff. It’s coroded and needs a good clean for it to properly work again but I honestly just want it for show because i own the gba sp which hurts my eyes less.

My gameboy advance sp i have owned since i was little this thing is a champ! It doesn’t power on normally and i have to do a whole start up ritual but she’s strong!

Then we have my ds lite. Iiii used to own like 3 of these but my last remaining one recently decided it had seen enough and …. Snapped in two. It survived a very rough life for a while i was an extremely clumsy kid and that thing got dropped… so often. I actually managed to score this new one for like 25 euro’s at a con. Cuz it didn’t come with a charger or stylus, but thankfully i own plenty of stylus’s. And another fender SOLD THE CHARGERS FOR CHEAP! I also got 2 games and ended up with a whole new ds lite for like 50 euro’s!

And finally my baby my problem child… my new 3ds xl. I was originally gonna get a 3ds for my birthday but when at the store the guy told us that if we waited just a little the new 3ds would actually come out so waiting for that would probably be better (and more expensive) so we did! This bad boi has survived sooo long. The paint on the back started to chip so I actually got an accessory that works as a stand and a hand grip so your hands don’t cramp up. and it has had a screen replacement and a joystick replacement. But he’s still going strong!

I also own a switch but it’s not really old and didn’t have it on hand.

Out of all of these I’m probably the most interested in kirby. So these are also more to look at in comparison to my other games.

Then we have my gba games! And Pokémon silver but I couldn’t find it.

First up my copy of Pokémon fire red! I got it for cheap plated it a bit then restarted and for a second I thought my screen had finally quit life because i was face to face with a yellow ratata THANKFULLY I actually like ratata and raticate on my team so i threw a ball at it… only to be transported to the pokedex menu and go…. Wait a minute…OH MY GOD! So I accidentally caught a shiny 😅 i named her Shimmer and haven’t touched that save file since.

Then we have 2 games I bought PURELY for nostalgia

A barbie game to get hyped for the barbie movie

And disney princess royal adventure I LOVE THAT GAME honestly if anyone wants to just play a feel good cozy walking game with little minigames this is such a nice game the graphics are fantastic and it’s just soooooo cozy (it is a glorified walking sim though…. It’s mostly walking walking and more walking)

MY SON!! I love the game and I’m playing 2…. But i never finished it due to reasons but from what i did play ITS GOOD but it destroyed the ending of the first anddd i dont like that.

Also i’m so excited for fashion dreamer to come out and i will get it(probably for Christmas as a little treat) and i will be super inspired and use it as outfit inspiration forrr my winx stuff! So that’s exciting!

I would own a lot more old old stuff if it wasn’t for the fact that static hurts my ears and my eyeballs also don’t like old screens SO MOSTLY JUST MY NINTENDO STUFF cuz i was the Nintendo kid from my town. ‘why didn’t i say it a million times’ impressions

writing this after finishing the whole series, so i refer to things out of order. spoilers under the cut.

these are not all of my thoughts, just the most overarching ones. if you’re watching and want to dump your play by play reactions on someone who will get it, definitely hit me up! i have plenty of both criticism and appreciation for the show :)

i started watching for sato takeru (sttkr) and sttkr only. i am so glad netflix doesn’t allow screenshots anymore or else my phone’s memory would be in huge trouble lol he portrayed naoki so CUTELY!

matsuyama kenichi (matsunichi) is another huge fave of mine, and i was wondering why he accepted a non-lead role for this drama. between the two of them (sttkr and matsunichi), he is definitely the better choice for the role considering the possession power. i love sttkr and think he’s talented, but i don’t think he’s better than matsunichi for pulling that off.

that being said, the show runners completely /wasted/ him. he wasn’t possessed nearly often enough to show off his acting acumen, and the detective stuff was very rote and not quite action heavy either. i appreciate what he brought, but i feel bad for him.

that being said (x2), i loved every scene where he and sttkr were partnered. matsunichi moves his face so much, and sttkr seems to forget he has a face to move. the visual dichotomy is so deeply pleasing to me. i need them to act together again, and in something better! (also, i cannot BELIEVE naoki did not hug uozumi in the last episode! where is the gratitude he spoke so much about? lol)

this is my first time watching inoue mao act, and i was not impressed. she is suuuper cute, but i don’t think she had a lot of screen presence. is it the character, or is it her?

speaking of her character, no one can convince me yui is the main character. she may be the female lead and inoue mao may be at the top of the call sheet, but this is a story /about/ naoki. we meet his family, we understand his regrets, we watch the lengths he’s willing to go to and not go to where it concerns the one he loves. yui’s idealism is still storytelling, but the realism in naoki doesn’t just reveal more about his personality, it drives 50% of the emotional plot. (it is worth saying that the other 50% comes from uozumi’s reactions to naoki’s decisions. doesn’t leave a whole lot for yui!!!)

i’ve seen some reviews so far that say the script wasn’t good enough for the superstar leads, and i hard agree. no one said it yet, but i hope no one blames the ensemble cast for it. i loooved all of the secondary characters. song hayoung is my ultimate favourite, the elder uozumi is my second. 🤍🤍🤍 (i love when there’s korean language in my jdramas lol)

i get that the murder mystery plot is necessary with a premise like ‘main character is a ghost but doesn’t know how he died’, but wow i was not invested at all. i could tell eisuke was involved from that very first shot of the grape jellies. i also think his motivation for murder seemed weak? most people break friendships over a misunderstanding like that, they don’t /kill/ the other party omg. the romantic aspect of the show and everyone’s interpersonal relationships were far more compelling. i WOULD watch 50 minutes of unwitting polyamorous negotiations between the dead naoki, the smitten uozumi, and the oblivious yui.

i can’t enjoy episode 10 for what it is. i understand it’s an epilogue/SP of sorts, but the fact that they saved The Reason The Show Is Named What It Is for the final conversation instead of the climax conversation in episode 9 really devalues the watching experience. i disliked 9 while watching, and i disliked it even more once i understood the function of episode 10. honestly, most of 10  could have been a montage, and i’d have derived the same level of satisfaction

the last 40 seconds though, excellent.  when you know he's gone and you're making peace with it at the same time yui is.............................. and then the whistle hits? i gasped. i wished there were no dialogue after that, but it was a good enough feeling that i rated it a 9/10 on mydramalist instead of the 8 i was gonna give it originally lol. ENDINGS MATTER!

speaking of which, i’ve noticed that jdramas lately are trending towards less bitter, more sweet endings. more definitive endings too. a lot of what drew me to jdramas was emotional heaviness, bittersweet quality, and open endings which kdramas and cdramas just weren’t providing me. i suspect that this is an appeal to global audiences, but i hope this is just temporary. i love payoff as much as the next person, but i also love thinking about the story long after it’s over. i’m getting less of that now, and i miss it

I’m happy they got back together, on the other hand I hate cheaters. I’m a massive fan of the teenage love triangle from folklore and I couldn’t help but thing of August. Did Steve cheat on here one time or was in numerous times? It seemed like she lost the promise ring and then boom, she finds out he cheated. Logically, I feel like he wasn’t cheating when he gave it to her and stuff, only having slept with someone after she lost it. I could be so completely wrong, but I guess what I’m asking is, was it a one time deal? Was he planning on cheating on her further? Sorry for the long post!!

Steve cheated on her in April of 1985 and regretted it immediately. In my head, his relationship with the reader at this point is a bit rocky (i see Steve feeling on edge bc he doesn’t know what’s gonna happen to them once their no longer high schoolers) and his judgement gets clouded (by his insecurities and four too many beers).

While reflecting on his guilt, he realises he fucked up and he knows he’s an idiot for messing up what he had with the reader and feels determined to make things right. However, he digs himself deeper when he decides not to tell the reader out of fear and the belief that bc the other girl meant nothing to him and bc he’s never going to do it again, there’sno need for her know (which is obv a bad move, but is incredibly on brand for a teenaged boy imo).

He gives her the promise ring the following month as a way of showing her that he’s committed now and in it for the long run. He also does it as a way of affirming to himself that he’s not going to fuck up again.

I chose to add the detail of the reader losing the ring around the time she finds the bra and then finding it again before she’s Vecna’ed bc I wanted the ring to sort of signify Steve being ready to commit to the promise to her and the reader being in an emotionally secure and mature enough position to trust him to do it.

This couldn’t have been in May 1985 after graduation when he first gave it to her. Working through the cheating and then the aftermath of Starcourt was necessary for both of them.

I completely understand not forgiving or taking back cheaters, however when it comes to young love I feel slightly empathetic when it comes to making these kinds of stupid decisions.

In terms of the folklore love triangle, I interpret things a little differently. I’ve always pictured Betty and James as being in a somewhat long term relationship in high school where they know each other extremely well but he feels a sense of inadequacy, while she has been made to feel like an old cardigan by most of the people in life except for him.

I used to be James’ #1 hater, but I think as I’ve grown and as I’ve thought more about it, I look at it all a little more forgivingly. Obv cheating is and should never be excusable, but I think when you put yourself in the position of a 17-year old falling in love and navigating relationships for the first time, it’s easier to rationalise the dumb choices inevitably made.

In Steve’s case, I characterise him as being someone who has a plethora of insecurities and fears that he tries to hide. In the first part of ‘Cardigan’, I briefly talk about how his whole issue with feeling secure in their relationship is partly because all his relationships were fleeting. He struggles with trusting Y/n when she says he loves him and with believeing that their relationship is going to last even when high school is over and all he has is a job at Scoops Ahoy.

He only begins to do this when its too late.

Also, I know I never really wrote it out but when the reader finally finds out Steve cheated, she barely speaks to him for the first half of the summer (and the few times she does she’s ripping him a new one). They don’t really start talking again until their forced into helping Dustin investigate further into the mall. Then when they’re both talking in the bathroom while recovering from the truth serum and the scientists, they start to unpack what happened and how much it hurt her. While she doesn’t necessarily forgive him yet, she’s beginning to get there.

Then when Hopper ‘dies’, the reader is back to avoiding Steve. It’s not until he shows up at her doorstep when El and the Byers have left town that she actually begins to forgive him and Steve begins to go easy on himself. This continues to build over time as she processes her grief and deals with the aftermath of it all while Steve remains steadfast at her side.

Tbh, when I planned the first part of this series I knew I wanted to double down on how both Steve and the Reader struggled with love, relationships and heartbreak because of their rocky relationships with their parents.

The line “I knew you, leaving like a father” always made me feel some type of way bc heartbreak can feel all the more piercing when you’re young and when you’ve already been burned by someone you loved before.

The Engage Maddening Experience, Part 1: I have no stats and I must kill (ch. 1 to 11)

I’m making this series because people liked the 3H one and I think it can be useful if you want to try Maddening and are too afraid of it. I’m not a min-maxxer nor an expert at these games in any capacity. But you know what they say, if it works, it works!

Since you can roughly divide the game in three parts in terms of gameplay and roster, I think that’s what I’m going to do here.

Anyway, I wanted this run to be as “pure” as possible, so the rules were simple:

-no dlc

-no online features

-no update weapons

-no FEH stuff

-no RNG rigging to get good rings

I also wanted to use units I’ve ignored in my first run. But since this is Maddening mode and the jump in difficulty from Hard is like... Really high, I still wanted to use some units I was familiar with and I knew could carry me to some degree. These picks were Chloé, and Ivy (not pictured in this thread since she joins late chapter 11 and I cannot talk about her performances just yet).

Maddening mode, for those unaware, appart from the usual changes in enemy stats and variety, comes with some peculiarities:

no hard saves within a chapter

the AI won’t attack if it hits for 0 both in damage and in hit rates

EXP gains are halved

Bosses cannot be broken, and weapon effectiveness doesn’t exist against them

there are no skirmishes

the Tower doesn’t reset the Somniel

the level up growths are fixed

That’s pretty much it. Points 2, 3 and 4 are really what make the mode difficult, because they change entirely how you’d approach the game.

Let’s jump into it

The prologue is nothing to write about, it’s pretty straightforward. Most chapters actually play like Hard mode, except, you know, harder.

The most important part is to pick 3 to 4 units and to funnel everything you’ve got in them so they can carry you through what’s arguably the hardest chapters of this first part: chapter 5 and 10. If you don’t do this, these units will also be unsuable later on.

Your most important rings are Marth, Sigurd and Micaiah. Marth and Micaiah allow you to earn EXP. In this game, EXP is link with SP, and therefore with Skills. So the nerf in EXP also makes it you’re nerfed on several levels.

Marth with level 10 bond gives you access to Mercurius, and Mercurius doubles EXP gains. Basically, stick Marth on people you want to level up and make sure you use the arena to get level 10 bond with him. Mine was on Alear, then Yunaka, then Chloé, with the objective of reaching 1000 SP on them before chapter 10 so I could teach them Canter.

Speaking of Canter, Sigurd is your most important unit in terms of fire power. He comes with Momentum, a skill that adds 1 attack by number of tiles crossed to attack the enemy. It’s strong because Sigurd also gives shittons of moves. I put it on Chloé and it made sure she could one-round stuff she usually couldn’t have. In terms of bosses, I would park her far away but in reach regardless just so I could exploit the skill to its maximum potential.

Micaiah is free EXP for whoever is wielding her. That’s it.

Basically your strat will be to use these rings on the units you intend to use long term. The other units deployed can still pull their weight and contribute, but they won’t gain significant EXP, and they SHOULDN’T. To give you an idea, Boucheron, whom I used in every map, was merely level 5 at chapter 11. But he was there to chain attack, so he was useful in his own way. Some other units will be unusuable if you don’t invest into them. Alfred comes to mind.

One thing with Maddening is that your units hit like wet noodles and it’s really hard not to get overwhelmed since the AI is so aggressive. Engage mode becomes more than a clutch, it’s something you’re using ALL THE TIME to kill things that need to be killed right now. Support capabilities like Alear’s personal skill and Yunaka’s poison are also king. You literally NEED that extra 1 point of damage per attack. 

Anyway, here’s the roster for this first part:

At this point in time, Alear is still a fairly offensive unit, but that won’t last for long. I picked the Avoid skill for her because I like her in the frontline, but Canter would have been a better choice. Divine Inspiration (+3 atk, -1 damage taken to adjacent ally) is probably the best personal skill in the game because its flat damage. ie, it ignores def. Good to abuse with daggers.

Not much to say about her except I’ll probably reclass her to Thief at some point.

Chloé is probably one of the best unit in the game or at least for half of it (we’ll see if she falls off later). Sigurd gave her some punch, but so did the Energy drop I gave her + Angelic Robe to help her survive. Canter on her is optimal I believe. Forge her an iron Lance and she can one-round most of the maps early on. I picked wyvern for the extra punch.

Céline is the hardest hitting unit you get in terms of magical damage until you get Citrinne, and even there she can double when Citrinne cannot. Chloé is also HARD carried by Célica. I went with her personal class but later on, I think I’ll reclass her to Martial Monk of High Priest since her offense isn’t really anything to write home about long term. I could just bench her, but that wasn’t the plan. TOGETHER WE RIDE (and die).

I actually used Jean on Hard, but I benched him later on as I put him in a shit class that really didn’t make use of his stat growths. I stuck Micaiah on him and he’s budget Hortensia for now. We’ll see how it goes... It’s a bit sad he doesn’t actually have innate Staff proficiency, so he’s stuck with C staves...

ngl I compared her stats to Zelkov on his join chapter and it was just sad. I don’t think he’ll be any better than her in the long run and Lucina and Alear support make it so she can poison even with shit attack. So that’s what she’s here for: poisonning and facetanking. She’s also hit by the “enemy will forever ignore her” curse because she’s so dodgy, so you can’t break the game in half with her like you could in Hard. Having a dedicated support is still nice, though.

He sucked in Hard, so I made the most rational decision and I gave him All the Forged Weapons. He’s doing fine for now. More chain attackers is always good. I just don’t think Diamant is a good unit...

Amber has insane strength and a personal skill that boosts his hit rate. Bow Knight seemed like a good match, especially because it fixes his speed stat. And that’s what you want to do. Chapter difficulty rating:

10 > 5 > everything else

It mostly played like Hard mode except these two. Chapter 10 has a really, really difficult start because Hortensia actually moves. Chapter 5 has a really hard finish with the boss and his squad rushing you + you don’t have access to many ressources at this point.

7. It's actually a pretty convoluted story. My little sister was reading the finnish translation of the first book for school. She read me a few excerpts and I thought they were really funny. So, when I ran out of things to read and was having a bad time a few months later, I picked up the series, and here we are

9. This one is tough, I love platonic dynamics so much and have several favorites. If we include fanon stuff from my brain, I think I'll go with Anton and Saracen. I've come up with a lot of stuff for them and I think they radiate sibling energy. Coming up with interactions between them is always a blast. If we go with only Canon things, I'll go with Anton and Valkyrie. I thought their friendship was very nice and I wish they got to talk more.

10. My favorite book is Last Stand of Dead Men. That book wrecked me emotionally and had so many nice character interactions as well. I need to buy a physical copy of it for display purposes. Armageddon Outta Here is a close second, I love short stories and Across a Dark Plain is one of my favorites. Also HBL! I liked HBL

I just binged 95% of @shinzouing 's Attack on Titan catalog on A03 and the following is a love letter to my all time favorite author.

I found you in 2015 when you were writing Supernatural under @sp-oops I came across Epirus Alone and fell in love. It was the first Sam fic I'd ever read and I had to see more, I read through everything you had and then reread it and reread it again. I fell head over heels in love with your poly fics and have been toast ever since.

Then you wrote your book series and I snatched that up so fast I almost gave myself whiplash. I read that series twice before I lost all of my Amazon log in stuff and couldn't get back to them. I'll buy them again some day, I just haven't yet.

And now, in the deepest depression I've been in since 2015, after I left Tumblr and the Supernatural fandom space, I came back on a whim and found out you've been writing Attack on Titan and the most heart wrenching anime I've ever watched suddenly became the catharsis I needed.

Some one I loved very much died horribly recently and "This is a story of the sea" was exactly what I needed to help me process that grief and that loss and realize that I can carry him with me even if he's not here to hold my hand anymore and having help to process those feelings has been transformative.

If just a few days I can day dream again. Hell I'm DREAMING again. At some point I was so damn depressed that I couldn't dream anymore and it was breaking me.

I've read a few fics that were helping immensely but then the loss happened and all the progress I'd made was destroyed and I couldn't get through it. I've been floating around in a grief filled haze for almost 3 weeks and I can finally see some light again.

TLDR: @shinzouing /@sp-oops is the best author I've ever come across and if I ever buy a signed book, it'll be from her.

Sonic post I reblogged earlier talking about how some fans kinda had to hide their interest in the series growing up did make me want to make my own post on the matter, though in thinking about that I think that’s kind of a hard post for me to make. Perhaps that’s kinda for two, maybe three reasons?

Actually putting under a read more because this post sorta upsets me. There’s a happy ending to it but like yk.

Suppose the first thing is probably the fact that, the most I was ever made to feel as though I shouldn’t like Sonic was right around when I was beginning high school, so I would’ve been 12 or 13 ish. I think that was probably the period of my life where I was outright the least interested in Sonic I’d ever been? What makes this hard though is I just kinda straight up don’t really remember lol. Like idk man I was about to start high school that’s where puberty comes in like I probably had a lot on my mind all at once such that specific memories are in fact just vague. Probably just had been kinda bullied out of it, almost. I remember buying a GBA SP, Gamecube, and an N64 with a fair few games across each of them (this was before their prices exploded like fuck btw) and posting a photo of them all to instagram and just getting bullied at school for it and that kinda conditioned me out of really talking about any of the games I was interested in, because obviously for some those systems I’d bought them with Sonic games in mind specifically, but then I just couldn’t really talk about them with anyone. Fuck I think around this time is when my little brother who was the other Sonic fan I knew started getting really into anime stuff so I didn’t even really have him to talk about Sonic shit with anymore. Nobody to talk about Sonic with so I’d mostly just get bullied I guess. I don’t even know if I ever really solved this problem in high school either - I eventually did get friends and I could talk about Sonic with or kinda just at them, but tbf I think I mostly managed to avoid later bullying in high school by just, fitting in? I guess? I never really pretended to be anyone else but I also wouldn’t really fully be myself around a lot of people, which tbf was better than it sounds but idk. Again this specific part of the like “Josh made to feel bad about liking Sonic” story is just a lot of vague memories.

The second thing is a lot clearer I’d say, but it’s. Probably the hardest to talk about? Like, “I don’t know if I even wanna make this post because this just kinda feels bad to think about” type of hard to talk about. And that’s the fact that I kinda got teased a lot by my own dad growing up for being into Sonic for as long as I was. It was never anything outright malicious or anything, but at the same time it’s the type of thing where you’re a young kid being teased for something that you get teased enough elsewhere for, and it stops really feeling playful, I guess? And even though my dad’s a good guy and would never hurt me, he was like more strict than my mum so I felt more afraid to like, I guess defend myself. I don’t know. This part sucks to talk about. But yeah it did make me have a harder time being vocally into Sonic at that age. For what it’s worth I’ve grown a lot more confident since then obviously, I’m way more able to be open about what I love with basically everyone. And you know, my dad may have been teasing 13 year old Josh for liking Sonic, but he’s genuinely not got a problem with 22 year old Josh liking Sonic, and hey he’s even gotten me some Sonic related birthday and Christmas presents. Plus his wife - my stepmum - is like genuinely super inquisitive about a lot of Sonic related things with me, wanting to know about the most recent Sonic games or talking to me about the movies and stuff. It’s really difficult to reconcile with the idea of my dad doing something so upsetting to me when I was younger, but I really am glad that things are where they’re at now.

I’d kind of already internally planned the third thing I wanted to talk about, but I realised while writing the second thing that I also have a fourth thing, and honestly I can kinda combine the two into one paragraph. The fourth thing to make me struggle with loving Sonic was, yeah, how the entire internet treats him. I mostly struggled with this around my mid to late teens, maybe? I’ve fully grown past this by now, because I realise literally who cares. But the third thing was something that hit closer to home, and that was my best friend at the time and their nature towards Sonic. This is another one that honestly feels kind of vague. I’m no longer friends with this person for less than stellar reasons and so I feel like there’s a level to which I’ve almost tuned out lots of the memories I had with them and how they behaved. But, they did like Sonic. They’d played a lot of the games, in fact I think in our last voice call ever (was an irl friend but covid happened) we were racing against one another in Shadow the Hedgehog. They hung out in some other Sonic spaces too, consumed other Sonic media - I was pretty damn able to talk to them about most things Sonic. But I guess the thing was always that... I guess they were quite convinced by a lot of negative internet opinions on Sonic games and Sonic fans? Like yeah I could talk most Sonic things to them but I guess it still felt like there was this disconnect. The closest friend I had at the time who does in fact happen to like Sonic, but it also wasn’t their favourite, and they just didn’t really get how I could like Sonic so much. Honestly, I’m not sure at the time if that bothered me, and how much it did if so. But in hindsight, and with my impressions of the period of my life where I was friends with this person having gotten so clouded anyway, I guess it does feel like, a little upsetting to me how things played out. I could be my full Sonic fan self around them, but that didn’t guarantee being understood, and even occasionally still got me bullied somewhat.

Yeah uh, idk. I guess through a lot of stages in my life I’d been made to feel as though I shouldn’t like Sonic. This post kinda ended up turning out a lot more depressing than I expected it to be. I don’t even think it’s necessarily gonna be that depressing to read or anything, but I think just thinking back on these experiences for myself just kinda sucks sorta. I still want to post it, I wrote a lot and if nothing else it’s something to look back on to see how my feelings change. It’s also another post in my Sonic tag. More than anything else though I think what gives me the confidence to be able to post this despite it being sad is the fact that like. I think I love Sonic now more than I ever have in the entire rest of my life lol. Like I’m so assured of my own love and confidence in that love for the series that I am able to feel okay posting this. Like I wear Sonic clothing in public, I’ve got a little Metal Sonic plastic accessory thing hanging from my bag, my keys have 2 different Sonic keychains - I’m just not afraid of what anyone thinks of it anymore. I love Sonic, that’s that. Part of it’s the series being more publicly accepted, but a bigger part of that is just me growing as a person. Regardless of what I’ve been through before, the me of now is able to stand loud and proud about this whole thing. And really, that’s all I want.

your post got me thinking about how i used to like boyles stuff, but when i started watching mock the week i heard him do a bit where he said something along the lines of "back in my day political correctness was called "sp*zzy gay talk"" which really made me sour on him (idk how it is in canada but in the uk sp*z is a straight up slur towards disabled people) and move away from watching his stuff. and on the one hand i get it, this was in like 2006ish so every third joke is questionable at best, but on the other that was the most blatantly offensive one i'd heard so far, and i actually i haven't seen much of mock the week from between 2007s series to 2015s series because i specifically wanted to avoid any more surprise slurs and offensive "jokes". i know its not fair to judge someone by what they said fifteen years ago and i am glad to hear he seems to have changed, but its still unfortunately the first thing i think of when i see his name.

Thanks for this, I always appreciate getting messages from people who have other things to say about stuff I’ve written on here. For anyone who’s reading this and is confused, this message is referring to this post, though at the time this message came in I hadn’t written the update yet.

I think I remember the exact Mock the Week moment you’re talking about, and I understand why your or anyone would not want to watch that. That particular S word isn’t “as bad” where I’m from, but it’s still a word I’d never use. And not just because it’s worse elsewhere. I learned at some point last year, while watching some British show or other, that in Britain that word is an outright slur, while in North America it’s just a generally derogatory word. But even before last year, I did not use that word. Because I don’t want to use slurs or generally derogatory words for marginalized groups that I’m not a part of, and generally think that’s a good rule to have. I spent 2006 figuring out I was (mostly) gay while hearing kids at school use “gay” as an insult, pretty much exactly the way Frankie Boyle used it in the moment you’ve mentioned, and that made it harder for me to accept myself and come out. I definitely do not want to defend Frankie Boyle’s use of those words in that way.

Honestly, I’m thinking of explanations for why I think it’s okay for me to still like Frankie Boyle in the light of all that, and I’m fighting a strong instinct to write a lot of words about those explanations, because they don’t really seem appropriate in the context of the quote you mentioned in that message. I don’t want to defend that one, and I don’t even want to talk about “nuance” or whatever in a way that might make it sound like I’m defending it. That specific comment is indefensible, and my only explanation for why I don’t hold it against Frankie Boyle forever is that I don’t think he’d stand by it today either.

I’ve written about my thoughts on this subject, the subject of how I love vulgar comedy but do not like comedy that hurts people who don't deserve it and how I reconcile those two things, in a few previous posts, and I'm sure I'll write about them in some future ones. But I’m going to resist getting further into them on this post, because any thoughts I have about how context makes certain things okay do not apply to that comment you’ve quoted. That one’s just clearly not okay, a lot of the stuff Frankie Boyle has said is clearly not okay, and I hate the way people can use overcomplicated ideas to defend stuff that is just clearly not okay.

Anyway, it’s absolutely fair enough if the association with that comment puts you off enjoying anything else that involves Frankie Boyle. There are so many amazing comedians out there who don’t have that kind of history, including many comedians who are members of the vulnerable groups that have been hurt by the language he casually used. I hope you can enjoy those other comedians and I’m sorry for all the not okay things out there.

The four easily blast through the first section of the dungeon to the point where it’s just cutscened away. You go into the entrance to the Wellspring and arrive at the endpoint after a fade to black

What’s at that endpoint, you might ask?

Well, do you remember the snake that guarded the wellspring? How I mentioned that it was easily long enough to reach to the outside of the cave

Well, something managed to outrun it. Someone, specifically

Extending into the furthest recesses of the cave is the Guardian of the Wellspring. It appears to be unconscious

Sebastian, Lia, and Elias all get to work getting them sorted out and conscious again, urging Tyrri to go onward into

The Final Dungeon: The Heart of Wild Magic

Rather than my typical fare of making dungeons into impassable mazes, the Heart is actually rather straightforward

A massive cavern that spirals downward into a single centrepoint, studded with the same magenta crystals as the Wellspring that glow with greater and greater intensity as you go further down

Cat’s sprite is actually visible and rendered in from the furthest up point, but it isn’t clear what she’s doing

 The strongest elementals in the game reside here, the Elder series elementals (Elder Tempest, Elder Frost, Elder Abyss, etc.)

Every now and again there are streams of water that pour into the cavern, interacting with them restores some SP to the entire party

Also present in here is one of the strongest staffs in the game, though I have not decided what it does

I have decided, however, that it does not exist in a conventional chest; rather, it is made entirely of crystal and is lodged into a wall in an offshoot cave

Reaching the bottom of the cave triggers the last cutscene

Catena is desperately chipping away at a cave wall with a small dagger, occasionally looking over at Tyrri’s notes

She’s muttering stuff like “please work” and “what does it mean” to herself; she clearly hasn’t had the time to comprehensively look over the notes and understand what they mean

Tyrri approaches her and tries to talk her out of whatever she’s doing

Catena shakily gets up, steadying herself against the wall, before screaming “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND! YOU NEVER COULD!” and slashing Tyrri across the cheek with the dagger

Tyrri quickly blasts it out of her hand, but the damage has been done

The two steady themselves and enter into…

The Final Boss: Catena Novi

This is the Osvald-style battle where it’s fundamentally against another scholar

No tricks, no gimmicks (lying), just a good old fashioned mage’s duel

Catena is very good at buffing herself; in addition to the usual Elemental Attack/Defence buffs, she has stuff to give her spells added effects (like Crystalline Magic), reflection and absorption skills, access to stuff like Advanced Magic and focused spells, the like

Her AI will very specifically target Tyrri with debuffs but not with single-target spells, the only damage she needs to worry about is from AoE attacks

Her boost mode will summon Elder elementals and keep them around; none of that Harvey/Tormented Blaze/Dark Entity shit of sacrificing them for more powerful attacks

If I knew how to code I’d give her the most intelligent AI of the entire rogues gallery. This is the Pokemon Champion Cynthia of Project Octopath

Her spells might change slightly depending on which elementals are out (ie: ice spells when Elder Frost are on the field)

Design-wise she actually looks rather plain

Her clothes look a little torn and her hands a covered in scratches

She is, notably, completely slumped over for the entire fight; her face is completely shrouded in shadow save for her mouth, which is set in a hard line that’s difficult to draw emotion from

Boost mode has her raise her head up, but a veil of hair still covers her face

Hitting half health triggers a cutscene rather than staying on the battle screen

“Let me… let me HAVE this, Tyrri! Please! You don’t – you CAN’T understand what this means! I can’t fail so far in!”

“Cat, I’m sorry. I really am. But this is too far – you’re destroying this cave, this magic. Do you have any idea what the consequences of your actions could be?”

“Shut UP! I WILL NOT FAIL HERE!”

Tyrri thinks to herself “No time like the present to test out that theory” and grabs one of the fallen crystals

Mistake. That was a mistake. Catena Novi is no fool, and is very quickly able to pick up on what that means

“Fascinating.” She magically pulls three crystals towards them and lets them hover around her head

“So that’s what your research meant. Father will be pleased.”

“Father?”

With that little tidbit of knowledge, the battle transitions into…

!!! IRIS THIS IS !!!!!

I really like the little thing where you kinda let Tyrri do the narration, its fun! it also gives a lil insight into what she’s thinking which is also nice
