Tier 001 (Future British Gentleman): In this tier are welcome writers who aim for a smaller wordcount, from 1,000 to 5,000 words (with lower exceptions possible for non-traditional writing, poetry for example)! The art pieces for this tier won't need necessarily to be fully colored or to have a background.

Ablative Humanity

An old story about mechsuits and identity, copied from my former twitter account (originally written on August 10th, 2018).

So the war comes, and we have to use mechanical exoskeletons to have any chance of fighting back. They're mind-linked, so you control them by just thinking of moving, and they learn from you to get better, predict your motions, and you become a better fighter.

At first you're just wearing it for when you go out on raids, or when you're on guard duty, but after so many surprise raids you end up wearing it all the time.

it's comfortable enough to live in, and with the sensors hooked up you don't really feel "you" anymore, you feel the suit. After a while it starts to feel weird when you have to take it off for a medical check up.

In the early days, you felt "big" in the suit. now you feel "small" when you take it off. You stop taking it off, as much as possible. towards the end of the war you're wearing it for weeks at a time, then months at a time.

Finally, the enemy is pushed back. Security can exist again, the random raids slowly trail off, and slowly things settle down. you remember what "calm" is.

There's never a treaty, but at least you're no longer staying up for days at a time watching the horizon with the suit's far-beyond-human eyes, watching for an attack. You're no longer keeping a satellite feed up in the corner of your vision, watching for movement.

And the day you were waiting for, at least at first, finally comes. You're going home. The war is over, or over enough that you're no longer needed here. You can take off the suit for the last time, and go back to your pre-war life.

You approach that appointment with some trepidation. you've felt so weak and tiny and powerless when you've had to be outside the suit before, will you ever get used to being a normal human again?

It takes three techs and 2 doctors to get the suit open at this point, given all the armor and modifications that have been made. it's basically grown around you like a second skin, just a second skin that can shrug off high-explosive anti-tank rounds.

They start with computer connectors and migrate to screwdrivers and by the end they're using something that looks like halfway between a crowbar and the jaws of life, while you're busy keeping your automatic self-defense reactions from frying them.

And finally they crack it open, and someone vomits from the smell. There's nothing but a decaying corpse inside.

There's confusion at first, someone asks if you're controlling the suit remotely, but they check the dogtags. Then the DNA. It's you. or, "you". Cause you're you, aren't you? This is just a human body... and you're still alive.

The suit's mind-link systems grew into your brain and took over functionality and worked on emulating your reactions so it could do what you want, better, faster.

And at the same time, your mind did what human minds do: they adapt. Humans are naturally cyborgs, you only have to pick up a pencil to realize that. It's part of your body image, and you think of moving the pencil, not moving your fingers to move the pencil.

So your human mind got more robotic, and the suit's computerized mind got more human. At some point you met in the middle.

And then one day on the battlefield when the biological half died, you didn't even notice. It was just another redundant part, just your ablative humanity.

You're still you. You're not the you that was born all those decades ago, but the you that was built and given life by bonding with a biological "you" that you've since discarded.

It's the Ship of Theseus, replacing every plank and beam as they rot, and there never being a point when it stops being the original and starts being a new thing. You have continuity of self from when you were born to now.

It's just that the Ship of Theseus started as a single-sail wooden ship with oars, and is now an aircraft carrier made of titanium and iron, with nuclear fire in its heart.

I know my last experience with a season ending on a note everyone hated and unanimously tore to fucking shreds for destroying the story on every level was... atypical. Lockdown. 6 month mass hysteria at minimum. Conspiracy theories that were, like, real things we had on camera. There was a Twitter wedding. Creative fervor that broke 100k fics on AO3.

Like. I know this is not a rational point of comparison and I'm not going to expect anything in my lifetime to match it 🤣

But.

If that was the highest high of post-season fandom engagement built on a cocktail of tasting everything you ever wanted AND the absolutely lethal levels of spite and swearing to eat showrunners' hearts in the marketplace, then whatever the fuck is going on after OFMD S2 is the opposite of that.

OFMD S1 was a huge fandom explosion. One silly little streaming show that had a gay kiss and then it skyrocketed. Fic numbers were soaring, high activity fic and meta engagement lasted for at least four months, it was constantly trending and flooding the dash... Like, fucking hell, over a year and a half after the immediate finale fervor it beat Stucky in the top ships bracket?!? To the point I was willing to give it what felt like due credit toward its potential as a future juggernaut ship. Not guaranteed, of course, but the potential was there.

In that context, new content should be a blow out party. Which it kinda was pulling off as it was airing, but looking back now? Not even quite a month later?

The effect of S2 on the fandom is like... a blip. Possibly over already.

New fic numbers started dropping off the moment the finale aired and have returned to deep hiatus levels. It's dropped off trending and streaming leaderboards... I'm very curious to see the first tumblr Week in Review since the finale, though we're still waiting due to the holiday.

Like, I've even popped on to scroll a few Izzy hater blogs that I know loved the finale out of morbid curiosity what they were up to, and I'm telling you... if I hadn't just watched the new season I'd think they were still over a year into hiatus. Saw some standard bitching about the izcourse / Edward takes (aka the one thing that kept them going all hiatus), they're currently passing around posts mocking one specific long OFMD version of TJLC I'm just hearing of, the same BTS gifsets everyone else is thrilled by... But barely any new meta or discussions. There's like 2 people posting actual analysis of S2 that's getting reblogged and they aren't even names I recognize from the hiatus. Nor is it particularly interesting to read. 🤷‍♀️

In July of 2022 I could pop onto a random OFMD blog and scroll through a dozen enthusiastic Stede or BlackBonnet metas about jacket colors or that moth from 1x07 or lighthouse symbolism or whatever. Now the new stuff has the same energy as posts from June 2023. It's borderline dead. And this is what it's like when there's an active campaign to engage fandom and Renew as a Crew?

(I will say fanartists are bringing some energy and there's some lovely pieces being passed around, which I do think the Renew as a Crew campaign is helping to boost?)

Even the hundreds of people saying it was a beautiful season and they loved it so much don't seem to be finding it a very engaging or inspiring season.

It's such a turn, like, what the fuck.

I love his character and how he acts. The facials of him sassily kicking the breakfast table killed me in a watchparty I had with my friends

And yes, all three of us went “NOOOOO!” when he was engulfed by the explosions.

I will say, as much as I tried to avoid spoilers, his death was spoiled for me in my inbox once the leaks circled around last week. It wasn’t it being spoiled that made me groan - it was the fact they were typed as if the annoying orange grew fingers and wanted to be EXTRA quirky. I am embarassed for the anon because all it made me feel was the same way I feel when I stumble upon a millenial making videos with their dog where they speak in this pseudo-european accent all squeaky. If you ever wanna make me clench my toes in disgust, just send me clips of dogs with bad forced accents all chipmunked. that one audio that goes “IF MONDAYE WAS A VEGGIETABLE, IT WOULD BE A ZZUCHEYENEYE, BECAUSE ITS ZUCHS!” oughhh i will be white knuckling my phone like murderface on twitter when he shits bro

THEN, I saw people on instagram and one had Dick’s face as it was melting from Nathan’s trip. When I saw that image before the movie, I believed either A.) When MF got exorcised Salacia jumped into the closest body and because he wasn’t a demi-god, his body began to legit melt, OR B.) it tied into the fact Crozier hired Knubbler to get info on the band since S1E2. And he was revealing that he wasn’t actually as good-intentioned as the band thought.

The fact he continued to be a wholesome wine aunt and hippie stoner uncle hyrbid to the boys, AND THE FACT CROZIER HAD AN ARC (in my au I have him be like a grumpy grandpa to the boys, and a dad figure to MF so the fuel this film gave me for fan art? BOUNTIFUL) god it was truly a feast

I think I would be more sad if they decided to have the route be that Knubbler was terrified to die. If he was pounding on that shield in a panic, oh that would hurt! He looked so accepting of it, looking at the band with confidence that they’d indeed save the world, was a pretty damn awesome way to go. He went out like a true gear - he feared not his mortality.

I will say, his passing wont cause me to cease drawin’ him and William! I’ll draw him like he died but he got better so he’s ok.

have a lot of dickface stuff I want to include into my fan piece au, and he’ll still be a favorite to draw when it comes to it. Lmk if you want me to draw any knubbler angst with mf and whatnot, because I’ll probably continue with my favorite route with drawing him - the Cheese Route™️.

an explosive argument.

the raising of voices, insecurities, and unspoken truths manifested themselves into three long, dreadful weeks of silence. the disagreement sparked from y/n asking chan to take a weekend away from work. this was not unreasonable to y/n. whenever they spent their Iimited time together, chan's laptop was always sitting in the corner; the lid halfway up. at first, it wasn't the problem but gradually, every spare minute chan accumulated, he'd open up his laptop. y/n saw just how consumed he was by work. obviously, chan protested and claimed he had to work hard, and while y/n was not denying his cause, she just wanted him to shut down for once, not roam the dorm till the ungodly hours of 4 am in an attempt to piece together tracks.

as the fourth dial tone dragged out, a crackle sounded, followed by the smallest voice, "hello, christopher?"

silence naturally followed, and chan sat bewildered at hearing his name being called out, nothing affectionate in his mind. "is everything alright?"

"baby, let me finish." chan snapped back to reality. he didn't intend for the conversation to switch, but his mood back flipped as soon as it felt as though there was an end in sight.

"mmmhh." chan sounded, the corners of his lips tugging up as he gulped lightly. there it was... baby.

"we need to properly sit down and talk. i know i avoided communicating my feelings, and i don't want what we have to end. but i also needed time to reflect on the things we both said. don't misunderstand me, this isn't the end of us. but it's also not something we should sweep under the carpet." chan could only nod in response, his throat long dried up.

the one word he missed hearing. even though it wasn't said as sweetly as he remembered, 'baby' still felt familiar, in it's affection. it felt like home.

Today's story is about a woman who was detained by the occupiers in the spring of 2022 and illegally sentenced to almost 7 years in prison. Iryna Danylovych is a nurse and citizen journalist.

She was threatened, blackmailed and forced to confess to things she did not do. Now Irina is in a Russian colony, her health is deteriorating due to the lack of quality and timely medical care.

Iryna Danylovych worked as a nurse at the Malachite rehabilitation center in Koktebel, maintained a social media page and several blog columns on the rights of healthcare workers and healthcare issues in the occupied Crimea.

The occupation forces abducted Iryna Danylovych in April 2022. She was returning from a night shift at the hospital when the occupiers searched her house and seized all her appliances, several books and documents.

There was no contact with Irina for more than a week. She was illegally detained by the FSB: she was subjected to psychological pressure, beaten, threatened with death, interrogated on a polygraph, threatened to be "taken to the forest" (ed. - meaning killed and buried in the forest) or "to Mariupol" (once again, killed), fed once a day, and not allowed to go to the restroom.

Eventually, the occupiers informed her relatives that a decision had been made to place her under "administrative arrest", allegedly because "she had transferred unclassified materials to another country". Later, they fabricated a "case" against Irina accusing her of "illegal actions with explosives."

The "proof" was the "discovery" of 200 grams of explosives in Irina's bag. And only on May 11, the lawyer managed to establish that she was in the occupation pre-trial detention center in Simferopol.

The "arrest warrant" was issued by the occupation "court" during a closed court session - without the participation of listeners, journalists, or Irina's relatives.

But the real reason for the detention is different. For covering the problems of the healthcare system, the crimes of the occupiers, as well as for protecting and promoting the rights of healthcare workers in the occupied Crimea.

Iryna was one of the first correspondents of the Crimean Process; she supported Crimean Tatar activists in the "courts"; prepared materials for the editorial office of Inzhyr Media; supported medical activists, recorded violations of rights under occupation.

According to Irina, she was kidnapped, taken to Simferopol and illegally detained in a basement, tortured and starved, and forced to sign a confession under threat of death, having been viciously planted with explosives after the "confession" had been forcibly extracted.

Complete hearing loss in the left ear, deprivation of necessary medications, suffering from headaches and earaches. This is what Iryna is going through now.

Irina was transferred to the Krasnodar Women's Correctional Colony No. 7 in Zelenokumsk. Every day, Irina's health condition deteriorated: in the occupation prisons, she gradually lost hearing in her left ear, developed otitis media, constant headaches and dizziness.

Back in July 2022, the political prisoner reported being beaten by an FSB convoy and psychological pressure exerted on her by Russian security forces. The occupiers also took away the opportunity to read, not returning the collection of poems.

To get medical help, she went on a hunger strike, but stopped it after 10 days, believing the promises of the SIZO administration, but no one has treated her and is not going to, watching the prisoner's health deteriorate.

According to her father, the colony allocates 90 minutes for the distribution of medicines twice a week: on Tuesday and Thursday. During this time, only 20-30 people out of a queue of several hundred prisoners manage to receive them.

"There are periodic fights among the patients for the opportunity to be in the front of the line and receive medicines. Iryna does not participate in this and has been deprived of access to the medicines prescribed by doctors, which we regularly send in parcels, for several months now," her father said.

Despite the illegal actions, torture and pressure, the occupiers failed to break the Ukrainian journalist, she continues to support Ukraine and believe that she will soon return home. "Only in such a strong Ukraine could such a strong you be born," said Iryna's father Bronislav.

Even behind bars, Iryna Danylovych continues to resist the occupiers and support Ukraine. The song "I am free!" performed by her is a symbol of disobedience and struggle, which the occupiers do not like, and the tattoo on her body that reads "Freedom is our religion" is her life's credo.

the beginning of that week was full of suspense and yet life was going on until it didn't. on 23.02.2022 i was donating blood. it was my first time donating blood. i found out that my natal documents probably state my blood type wrong. i would have gotten a free blood test results in a few days and found out the truth. i never came back to pick them up.

on 24.02.2022 couldn't sleep bc the news about my blood type bewildered me. that night there were three loud explosions in my city. it wasn't confusing at first bc there were building sight near us and it would usually make a lot of noise. but nothing like those explosions. also, there's no building at night. after the third explosion i checked twitter and everything became clear. the situation was much worse in the East too. Grandma was already awake and worried. i stayed with her during day. we waited for what's coming next.

on 25.02.2023 i was suppose to have a job interview. i applied for it during winter holidays. i never went there. first they've called to postpone then i wasn't in the city anymore.

I didn't have a plan for life anymore, it became apparent the same morning. the front was moving closer from the East, there was no certainty as to when would be our turn. i was afraid that our local government would surrender the city if russians arrive. i was genuinely planning to go to first aid course, now that it was more important that ever. i was even ready to go stand in queue for military training course. i couldn't tell my mom though. i knew she would be horrified. i also knew that have i decide to join the defence forces, they would be left alone. my mom would be left alone to look after my sister and my grandma and my dad. so i stayed by her side. I hoped it would be just for a while. it was still relatively quiet in odesa.

they we hoped it wouldn't be long. we hoped that it wouldn't take so many lives, both civilians and defenders. but it did. and it's been 2 years of full-scale war, 10 years of war for our rights to exist as Ukraine. Brave men and women of Armed Forces of Ukraine have been holding the defence for this long. im grateful for each day that i live through in safety. it's never a granted thing now, it wasn't for 10 years. there's always a price paid in blood, health or someone's life.

I don't know how long it will last, but im hopeful. that we will win, and we will heal after all. and then we will prosper again all odds.

Just saw some charles fans on twitter mad at him because he didn't fight carlos

Also some people should not be charles fans since apparently they don't like anything about him. It's like they like his face but wish he had a different personality

It's easy to be reactionary, but this is ridiculous. With fans like that, who needs haters?

I have to say there's been people across sites in the past few weeks that I've thought.....man, like, you don't HAVE to support Charles. If you want to go support Carlos or another driver.....you can literally just do that. I fear a little that Charles might have fallen victim to the curse of being one of the most popular drivers, so in a lot of ways it's 'trendy' to support him because it gets you interactions online, but no doubt if we entered another 2021 a lot of people would drop him.

I think, and I hate to say this as someone who enjoys fic, but RPF plays into this a little. Fics can construct perfect fantastical narratives where Charles does a P8->P1 recovery drive, spits on Carlos over the radio, and then wins the world championship in round 5 etc. A lot of Lestappen fics lean into this particularly because....yeah, compelling narrative. There are good fics with similar premise. But it's important to remember that RPF is fiction, and it often glosses over or dumbs down a lot of aspects (rightly so) to focus on emotional beats instead. I think this gives people who are perhaps newer to racing a false idea of what a good race and a good driver driving a good race looks like. And Charles has....a LOT of new fans due to his explosion in popularity amongst gen z in particular, and I'm going out on a limb and saying RPF has played a role in that. F1 is all about narratives, and if you're used to consuming perfect ones, if one doesn't quite match up to your expectation I understand the disappointment. It doesn't take away from the fact that Charles raced the best race he possibly could at Suzuka 2024.
