A researcher says New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs is sharing "misinterpretations" of the gender-affirming care data she's been collecting and analyzing for years. In a year-end interview with Radio-Canada, Higgs shared his concerns about how easy it is for children to get gender-affirming care.  "In Canada it's about over 60 per cent, after one visit, can be put on the puberty blockers," Higgs said. He was also quoted by The Canadian Press saying 60 per cent of kids "are given automatic affirmation and put on some sort of hormone therapy" at a first appointment. Researcher and medical doctor Greta Bauer said her study, published in 2021, specifies that 60 per cent of young patients were prescribed medication at their first hormone-specialist appointment.

Amelia Hansford at PinkNews:
Swedish politicians voted in favour of the new set of laws during a legislative session on Thursday (18 April), passing it by 234 votes to 94, with 21 abstaining or not voting. Under one of the new bills, set to come into force in July 2025, applicants interested in changing their legal gender as part of their transition can now do so when 16 rather than waiting until they are 18.
The other bill will make the process of diagnosing gender dysphoria easier, minimising it to a short consultation with a doctor or psychologist and the approval of the National Board of Health and Welfare. The legal process will be separated from applications for gender-related surgery, which will need a longer assessment and will only be an option for those over the age of 18. Gender-reassignment surgery, often called “bottom surgery,” will remain an option only for the over-23s. Those under the age of 16 applying to change their legal gender on government documents will require the approval of a parent or guardian, and will also need to be sanctioned by a doctor and the National Board of Health and Welfare. The prime minister and leader of the liberal-conservative Moderate Party, Ulf Kristersson, said the proposal was “balanced and responsible”. Fellow Moderate Party MP Johan Hultberg said that a “great majority” of Swedes will not notice that the law has changed, but those it affects will see “a large and important difference.”
Sweden lowers the age of legal gender change to 16 without parental or guardian approval. Those under 16 seeking to make a legal gender change must do so with parental or guardian approval.

The great majority of people support gender affirming care for teenagers
Tumblr media
The new  30-Country Ipsos Global Advisor Survey shows that in most countries people support transgender health care for youth.
60 percent agree that “with parental consent, transgender teenagers should be allowed to receive gender-affirming care (e.g., counseling and hormone replacement treatment”. 27 percent disagree.
Tumblr media
Figure: Views on Teens’ Access to Gender-Affirming Care By Country.
Globally, 67 percent say that trans people face at least a fair amount of discrimination, compared with 19 percent who say they face little or no discrimination. Perceptions of discrimination are highest in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries, and lowest in Switzerland, Germany, and Japan.
Majorities in each of the 30 countries surveyed (76 percent on average) agree that transgender people should be protected from discrimination in employment, housing, and access to businesses such as restaurants and stores.
it is interesting to note that when the British newspaper The Guardian presented the figure above, the headline was “Less than half in Britain back gender-affirming care for trans teenagers”. Britain has indeed become a a haven for transphobes, but the truth is that more Brits support health care for trans youth (47 percent)  than opposes it (35 percent).
Here are some other key findings:
The average share of the LGBT+ population averages nets to 9 percent. Brazil is at the top with 15 percent. 18 percent of Gen Z identifies as LGBT+.
LGBT+ visibility is up, but still differs widely across countries
Majorities support same-sex marriage and parenting in most, but not all
Support for protection from job and housing discrimination is broader than for other measures for transgender people countries
3 percent identify as some shade of trans (including non-binary/gender non-conforming/gender-fluid. 6 percent of Swiss people belong to this category. 6 percent of Gen Z belongs to this category.

Zinnia Jones (May 31, 2021). "Early use of masculinizing steroid oxandrolone in trans boys can add 2 more inches of height compared to testosterone." Gender Analysis. Live link. Archive.
The above blog post is about a study about looking for more suitable sorts of puberty blocking and hormone therapy for transmasculine youth. It found a treatment that is more effective for letting them grow up to be a couple inches taller, if they start it early, at age thirteen or fourteen. It's about this study:
Grimstad, F. W., Knoll, M. M., & Jacobson, J. D. (2021). "Oxandrolone Use in Trans-Masculine Youth Appears to Increase Adult Height: Preliminary Evidence." LGBT health, 8(4), 300–306. https://doi.org/10.1089/lgbt.2020.0355

A specialist in adolescent medicine explains what it means to provide gender-affirming care and why it’s so important for transgender and nonbinary youth.
"New policies regarding LGBTQIA+ rights have been in the news recently, and the potential impact could be far-reaching — much of it directly affecting transgender and nonbinary youth.
According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 2% of high school students identify as transgender, and of those 27% felt unsafe at school, 35% had been bullied at school, and 35% had attempted suicide in the past year.
One way to support transgender youth and improve outcomes for their mental health and overall well-being is by providing gender-affirming care, says Dr. Jane Chang, an associate attending pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital and associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine.
“Gender-affirming care, at its most basic level, is about validating and supporting children and loving them for who they are as they explore their gender identity,” says Dr. Chang, who specializes in adolescent medicine.

Transgender
Ever since I was little, I've felt more on the masculine side of the gender spectrum. But when I was a little girl I thought that I wasn't right. My mother had taught me to be against people who are a different gender then their birth gender. My mom had taught me that they will burn in hell, that they will be punished by Christ. And I hated myself for it, I hated feeling like a boy. So I made it up by coming out as lesbian/bisexual. I told my mom my sexuality, and I was severely punished. I wanted to cry in my closet until I died from starvation and dehydration, but I didn't change. I was a "weird tomboy girl" who hated pink, dresses, and barbies. My mom would call me a tranny and make fun of me for it, saying that I acted "unladylike." I pushed myself, my brain, my power, to stay feminine. I wanted to be happy, be at home, be loved. I hated the feeling, though. I wanted to be a boy, I wanted to change. I held my thoughts and crumpled them and threw them away...Only to pick them back up from the trash can in my brain. I had to fix it, I needed to be happy. I couldn't stay cisgender any longer, the dysphoria was only getting more painful. I decided it was time, time to be a boy, be happy.

Alberta’s proposed transgender youth policies have the potential to increase anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, according to a group representing the province’s psychiatrists. Citing a handful of American studies, the Alberta Psychiatric Association (APA) says the proposed policies “have the potential to lead to significant negative mental health outcomes amongst an identifiable, already marginalized population.” The APA says similar legislation passed in the U.S. “increased levels of anxiety, depression and suicide” among 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, as well as the number of hospital visits.

Ryan Adamczeski at The Advocate:
Forced outing has devastating consequences for LGBTQ+ people, and queer youth are at an even greater risk. One-third of LGBTQ+ minors who were outed without their consent were more likely to experience depression, as well as face less support from their families, according to a new study from the University of Connecticut. Two-thirds said that the event caused significant stress. Outing is the act of revealing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity without their consent. The UConn study analyzed responses from 9,200 queer youth ages 13 to 17 in the Human Rights Campaign's 2017 LGBTQ National Teen Survey which showed a correlation between outing and stress.
The data also showed that LGBTQ+ youth experience stress from outing differently, as transgender, nonbinary, and asexual respondents reported higher stress levels than cisgender gay, lesbian and bisexual participants. In all cases, respondents reported lower stress when they also reported have parents or guardians who are educated on sexuality and gender identity. More than 550 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced across the U.S. in 2023, and 80 were passed into law. In 2024, 487 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced and 20 have passed into law, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. There are currently five states that mandate schools report transgender children to their parents if they request to go by a different name or pronouns. Another six “promote” forced outing, according to the Movement Advancement Project.
A new study from UCONN that came out reveals that anti-LGBTQ+ forced outing policies lead to higher rates of depression and familial rejection among LGBTQ+ youths.

people tend to think trans people are special snowflakes who get pampered by society so here's being trans from the perspective of a transgender 14-year-old who has no adult support in his life. please boost this message to transphobes, it might not change their minds but it could at least make them consider the real children they're hurting.
• when I came out at 13 I was yelled at by my parents until I cried
• according to transphobes it's somehow my fault that I was born with a female body
• people at school ask me what my pronouns are as an insult and call me slurs and nobody does anything about it, not even teachers care
• I came out to these people I thought I could trust and their response was to push me out of their circle of friends and harass me, constantly calling me a lesbian even though I'm not even a girl
• life seems to have lost its colour and I can't remember the last time I felt actual strong emotions
• actual grown ass adults complain about trans people on the internet just for clout and argue with each other about whether or not we deserve rights, as if that isn't the most dehumanising shit
• I've been told that my feelings don't matter by a teacher at my school because "people in countries at war have it worse"
• the prime minister of my country was on national television spreading hate speech about my people and everyone is acting like he's a saint for it, completely ignoring the other bad things he's done for this country because "he hates trans people and that's good"
• I have to stand idly by while trans people my age are committing suicide and I am so scared I will end up adding to that statistic
• there's bad apples in every group of people and just because I'm trans I have to be grouped in with every bigoted/hateful trans person when I'm just trying to keep myself alive and I'm not bothering anyone
• I am too scared to bring up my queer identity around anyone because I don't want them to think I'm shoving it in their face, it might as well be a secret even though I've been out for over a year
• i sometimes forget that I'm not physically a boy but then it hits me again when I see how much taller/deep voiced my male peers are
• I had to resocialise myself as male and change so many things about my behaviour that it's constantly at the forefront of my mind
• my chest constantly feels tight, I can't breathe deeply, my breathing is shaky and I get random rib pains every few hours
• I'm told that my gender is a "protected characteristic" but adults are doing a piss poor job at protecting me, I feel like I'm in danger because of being queer
• people at school harassed me so much for being trans that I practically forced myself back into the closet by telling them I don't care what they refer to me as (I most definitely do care)
• my identity is so normal to me but it's not normal for anyone else, I'll be talking about a girl crush I have thinking what I'm saying is normal but someone chimes in with "oh are you a lesbian?" and it brings me back to the harsh reality that being queer isn't normal
• I used to feel so much pride as a queer kid but now I just hate everything about being queer and I wish so badly that I could be just like everyone else
• more and more laws are being put in place against my people and one day I might not even be able to get gender affirming treatment
• the chemical imbalance in my brain is considered a political stance rather than just a rare condition a group of people have that shouldn't be a big deal
• I, a 14 year old boy, am more mature about gender than ACTUAL GROWN ADULTS who go on PUBLIC TELEVISION TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ME WHEN I AM JUST TRYING TO EXIST IN PEACE
• I keep being hit with the realisation that I still need to wait four years just for the chance of merely beginning to transition, which will cost me thousands of pounds and probably take more than ten years to fully transition, whereas my peers are just handed it at birth
• trans people are seen by society as "annoying" and "shoving it down people's throats" and "looking for an excuse to be special" for some fucking reason
• I have to juggle all this shit with trying hard in school and balancing life, all while my brain is not even fully developed yet. my cognitive and emotional processing skills aren't even close to being developed but i have to deal with suicidal thoughts, media pushing the idea that I'm mentally ill, internalised transphobia, constant harassment, transphobia from almost every single person in my life, feeling like a fucking freak for a chemical imbalance in my brain, and yet I STILL have to deal with normal teenage things like feeling ugly or struggling in school, and further yet I CANT TALK TO A SINGLE ADULT ABOUT MY SITUATION BECAUSE NOBODY BELIEVES ME OR SUPPORTS ME
• the cherry on top: there is absolutely nothing I can do about my situation until I turn 18, my only option is to suck it up and deal with it until either get actual help or end up killing myself
if you're an adult who thinks trans people are groomers/snowflakes/annoying/criminal, think about how your actions are impacting youth who are just trying to stay alive. you are not protecting children by making us wait longer for treatment or shielding us from supportive outlets. grow the fuck up. you're an adult, act like it. find something else to do with your life than attack an astronomically small minority of people.

The Catholic Diocese of Worcester, MA has come up with an awful policy that requires kids to use their birth name and gender assigned at birth at school and has all sorts of other restrictions on speech and expression. The kids don't want it. Even the schools don't want it. There's an article about it here:
I hope you'll read the article and sign the change.org petition, below:
