MDZS manhua chap 232: Welp, looks like officially, WangXian's first papapa happened OFF SCREEN, but we do get the knives af aftermath 😭😭😭
(covers novel chaps 95-96; til now, only adapted in audio drama S3Ep12)
Tumblr media
Yep, the chapter just starts like this 😂. So no bathtub to bed papapa scene it seems. Haven't seen any leaks of it either. I guess this is a clever way to naturally bypass that scene without making it too obvious that it's due to censorship. But hey! At least they still absolutely acknowledged that WangXian slept together. I was kinda expecting a more severe edit tbh. Thankful they didn't just jump to Guanyin Temple.
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, in the book, Wei Ying's words of thanks was more lengthy: "In these two lives, you've helped me a lot. I know you're... really nice to me. You're really great! Apart from thank you, I don't know what else to say to you... Anyways, towards you, I feel... I feel...." --from chap 95, translated by Exiled Rebels. In this chap of the manhua, Wei Ying only THOUGHT most of that...what came out was only his thank you. Either way, end result was still the same...
Tumblr media
Lan Zhan still misunderstood and thought Wei Ying slept with him just out of gratitude so he shoves him away. 😢
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's so wrought with emotion he's shaking. 😢😢😢
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More knives: Wei Ying feeling so ashamed, thinking that he took advantage of Hanguang-jun who was just being platonically nice, that Lan Zhan doesn't like him THAT way. 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seeing Wei Ying tremble like that, Lan Zhan wanted to reach out to help him put on his clothes....
Tumblr media
This whole scene always makes my heart clench up. First time I read it in the book I actually cried cuz I just felt so bad for Wei Ying...he just felt so ashamed...when there was absolutely no reason for him to be. Ugh. Honestly I feel bad for both of them. Misunderstandings suck ass.
The chapter ends with Wei Ying just dismissing their papapa as nothing, pretty much just two bros helping each other out 😂. I laugh but ofc the knife is twisted further into Lan Zhan's heart.
**the last line of what Wei Ying was saying should be "You don't need to touch me" so it's actually more heart-aching than what I have there. I mixed up the meaning of two Chinese characters in my head (I mistook 用 for 有's meaning)...which makes quite a difference. 😅 I really could kick myself for that cuz it's such a dumb mistake. Sorry your hearts didn't hurt more, Wei Ying definitely deserved more of your heartaches.

CQL/MDZS INSP - Gusu Arc Pt2c: The Gift
CAPTIONS AS TEXT
- - - Wei WuXian: Lan Zhan, I’m back! Did you miss me? Without me copying texts for these past few days? Lan WangJi: .... - WWX: Don’t be so scary! I’m here to apologize, by giving you a present! LWJ: No. WWX: Are you sure~~~? LWJ: ??? - WWX: Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan! How do you like my gift? I found one last night. Today, I caught another to keep it company! - WWX: What do you think? Am I sincere enough? I spent half a day catching it. Do you want them or not? LWJ: ... - WWX: Fine, I'll give them to someone else then. LWJ: To whom? WWX: Whoever is good at roasting rabbits! My food hasn't had much flavor lately. LWJ: Killing is forbidden in Cloud Recesses. It is the third rule on the Wall of Rules. - WWX: Fine, I’ll go down the mountain, kill it outside, and then bring it back to roast it. You don't want them anyway, why do you care? - LWJ: .... I'll take them. - WWX: NOW you want them?! Look at you—you’re always like this. Never speaking from your heart!
-- Mo Dao Zu Shi: Novel, Chapter 18 | Dongua/anime S01E05
MY THOUGHTS (rant alert)
IMO, CQL/The Untamed tv show adaptation ruined the whole significance of Lan WangJi’s rabbits and his later obsession with them.
I’ve already talked about the cultural significance of rabbits in ancient China, as a symbol of homosexual love. In MDZS, there are several scenes where the interactions between the 2 rabbits (who are both male) directly represent the relationship between WangXian.
In the original MDZS novel, Wei WuXian gave LWJ the rabbits as a peace offering, which marked the transition to a gradual ceasefire and ending of hostilities between WangXian as rival classmates/disciples.
Tumblr media
The rabbits fight, but eventually end up horsing around and dry-humping each other, which scandalizes sheltered/repressed LWJ. He calls them obscene/filthy (depending on translations), but still decides to keep them--despite it breaking the rule that no pets are allowed in Cloud Recesses.
WWX only gave LWJ 2 male rabbits, but 16 years later, LWJ has an entire colony, all descended from the first 2--and we learn that Lan Xichen and Lan Sizhui have been helping him collect, breed & care for them all these years.
Tumblr media
With the bunnies, we finally see the chronically stoic LWJ openly express interest/fondness for something, AND it’s directly related to WWX, and something WWX GAVE him, as an apology for being such a menace  LWJ not only accepted the rabbits, but he accepted WWX’s APOLOGY, AND accepted WWX as a person: obscene and filthy and a rule breaker, but one LWJ not-so-secretly liked anyway.
Tumblr media
It’s been well-documented how much The Untamed had to modify aspects of WangXian in order to slip past China’s anti-LGBT+ censorship bans, but IMO there was ZERO reason to get rid of the scene where WWX gifted the bunnies to LWJ. The donghua/anime is also under censorship, and THEY included it--though admittedly, they snuck the scene in the post-credits, so it’s missable, unless you watch the very end of S01E05.
However, what The Untamed did instead was completely unnecessary!
Tumblr media
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought the random AF rabbits wearing the GusuLan headbands and living in the Ice Cave for hundreds of years was EFFING DUMB, and that the exposition dump Lan Yi gave was convoluted AF.
Where did these Ice Rabbits even come from? (Are they divine? Lan Yi’s are clearly ice-proof and immortal-ish and don’t need food, but we see Lan WangJi’s munching on grass, so....? I assume these are the same ones LWJ raises 16 years later, but...how????)
Yes, the rabbits wearing the Lan headbands gave WangXian the idea to share LWJ’s headband to get past the magic barrier, which gave the fandom its iconic “WangXian wedding scene Pt1,“ cuz the headband is sacred to family & S/Os, but come the heck on.
Tumblr media
None of that in the Ice Cave was canonical to the MDZS source material, it was just made up for the show. They integrated it fairly well, but IMO they could’ve easily had WWX go back in the cave and steal the rabbits and give them to LWJ, but we never see the cave again, or get any explanation for LWJ’s colony 16 years later (IIRC). Rather than LWJ liking rabbits as a not-so-subtle clue to him being gay and them being a present FOR him from the guy he was developing feelings for, The Untamed merely used rabbits to represent what WangXian experienced in the Ice Cave.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, but as popular as the headband-sharing scene is in the fandom, IMO I don’t think the Ice Cave as a whole was that big a deal, especially not compared to the way more impactful cave WangXian was in later--Xuanwu’s.
Tumblr media
By the show’s logic, why weren’t tortoises used as a symbol for them? They were in the Ice Cave together for a few hours tops. But they were trapped alone together in Xuanwu’s Tortoise’s Cave for a WEEK, and had to rely on each other to LITERALLY survive.
Tumblr media
Eff those random AF bunnies--it was because of the tortoise that WWX found the Yin Iron and that LWJ sang his secret WangXian song to WWX and opened up to WWX and openly wept in front of him! That was HUGE! So The Untamed’s effort to push the rabbits as the symbol of WangXian’s love IMO lost a bit of its effectiveness, when they removed the original context & didn’t adequately supplement it.
TL;DR, The Untamed did the symbolism of the rabbits a disservice, and the Ice Cave was not that impactful of an addition to the story. The real resonance they had with LWJ is lost in the tv show, in favor of the rabbits barely driving contrived plot exposition with Lan Yi and the Yin Iron/Stygian Tiger Seal, which The Untamed also effed around with in ways I didn’t like--
Listen, I’ve said before that I think the donghua/anime is a much better adaptation of MDZS. I like The Untamed for its aesthetics, and for all the lovely things it gave us, but it took serious liberties with the source material. (And don’t get me started on that ending! U_U)

About MXTX’s problematic m|m
There is a cultural component to this. Understand that my analysis is based off looking over Chinese and western history and interacting with both the western and Asian sides of the fandom. I’m Chinese American, so I have access -- and speak Chinese and English -- to both sides, but at the end of the day, the idea of what’s a respectful or disrespectful way to portray LGBTQ culture is made up of millions of individuals’ subjectives. My analysis is only a nibble of the entire cookie.
We talk a lot about how MXTX’s writing is fujoshi fodder. It’s literally yaoi. Whether you read it in English or Chinese, it’s literally yaoi. She got her start in reading yaoi D. Gray-Man fanfiction.
I talk more about her portrayal of gender roles and queercoding here.
So MDZS in particular -- it’s the only one I’ve read, though apparently, TGCF has the same aspects -- presents a “man” and a “woman” in a boys’ love relationship. Wei Wuxian is the wife and mother. He’s literally curvy, always fainting into Lan Wangji’s arms, has a higher voice, grew up among lotuses (which isn’t necessarily “feminine,” but from a modern lens, even in contemporary Chinese society, does have that slant), and is always the one getting penetrated. Power bottom, thy name is Wei Wuxian. 在下名叫魏无羡。
Lan Wangji, in a lot of art, is portrayed with a broader jawline, is markedly taller by the time Wei Wuxian gets Mo Xuanyu’d back into life, is jacked AF (all the better to carry wifey and one [1] dead Nie Mingjue with, YEET), and is quiet and stoic with a deep voice. And he always tops. Let’s not forget the incense burner chapters where he literally tops Wei Wuxian while demanding, “Who is the husband?”
Not to mention the copious amounts of sexual tension and unprotected sex, and WangXian’s non-con kink. This is gay porn. Not PWP, but gay porn nevertheless.
So this dichotomy between masculine husband and the feminine wife husband is clear.
I know the western fandom often is either queasy with this or HATES this. It comes off as fetishy, and really, why does a homosexual relationship HAVE to follow these traditional gender norms? Don’t force heteronormativity onto a gay couple, damn it. But there have been western fans who’ve just...jumped down MXTX’s throat for this. Way too fast, and not always deservedly.
The Asian fandom, as I’ve seen it, tends to be a little more blase about this. I talked around, and while I don’t like the few Chinese people who whine, “ERMERGERD THEY ARE HUSBAND AND WIFE THERE IS NO SWITCHING UNDERSTAND CHINESE C U L T U R E -U-” most people are very chill with it.
I think for China at least, our social relationship with homosexuality has been...very on and off. If we trace back the last couple of dynasties, there are documented periods of time where homosexuality was...fine! Absolutely normal! Confucius’s word is law when it comes to building a home with a man and wife and kids, but it’s not going to kill anyone to love who you love, even if it isn’t someone of the opposite cis gender. There are records of people casually talking about courtship between men in certain regions, and it’s...fine. When Christian missionaries came over, they were fucking horrified (GOOD, nobody ASKED for your dumb opinion).
In Europe, and eurocentric America? Well, you still hear people screaming on the street about homosexuality being a sin, and that’s been consistent in the last couple of centuries. That stigma has been much more enduring, whereas China has fluctuated. And it shows in our literature, and the media based off of it.
What I’m saying is, despite the current state of censorship and the fact that it’s a LOT harder to be openly gay in China than it is to be in most places in the west, you can’t censor or stigmatize away the fact that Chinese people still subconsciously appreciate queer romance. And if it’s kind of fetishy and there’s too much of a husband-wife dynamic? Well, so long as they’re happy, and truly in love, it doesn’t matter. Some people genuinely like that dynamic, so we’ll leave it as is.
We applaud The Untamed for being a breakthrough LGBTQ drama, and it is...because it’s made a breakthrough in the west. People all over the world can appreciate the love and care the cast and crew risked to make it a real love story between two men. But honestly, this isn’t the first major piece of LGBTQ media to make it to the Chinese mainstream. Farewell My Concubine 霸王别姬 was fucking censored when it came out in the 90s, but people still watched it, loved it, and still make media based off of it. There’s a whole fucking LGBTQ film scene in Beijing that struggles to even exist, but does indeed exist.
(There’s a whole other conversation about how censorship has prevented a lot of media from exploring more queer relationships that say FUCK YOU to the man-wife dynamic, but that’s for another day. See: Addiction [web-series].)
Whereas westerners generally had a more rigid and inflexible conception of how any relationship should work for centuries. When you rebel against homophobia, you rebel against the patriarchal, heteronormative structures that come with it.
This is a really long, nuanced conversation to have, and I don’t think I covered all the bases, but at least this opens up that discussion at least a little bit.

I can’t wait for more of your discordance au, I’m a sucker for angsty wangxian! I’m actually really curious about what’s going on with Lan Xichen the whole time he’s gone. Is he recovering for all that time or is there some political plot he needs to take care of? I saw that courtesan Meng Yao tag too which makes me even more intrigued 👀👀👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Awww you guys >:) Thank you so much for the encouragement.
Unfortunately, Xichen and Huaisang are not a pair. The hidden agenda of this fic is xiyao (lol sorrah), and I know people tend to feel either YAY or NAY about xiyao so I’ve totally separated the wangixan and xiyao part. You can read one without the other and it wouldn’t make much of a difference at all. At best Meng Yao is mentioned in end of the later wangxian parts once or twice.
I love Xiyao because I think it’s full of possibilities. Obviously canon!xiyao is tragic and problematic af, but this is an au, so... I do ...what I...want? Meng Yao in this au is his own worst nightmare - a courtesan, and Zewu-jun is the handsome polite gentlemanly amnesiac he saves.
Below cut are more reasons why Lan Qiren longs for the sweet release of an early qi deviation (arc synopsis of lan xichen & meng yao’s half of the story).
Lan Xichen’s Arc: where politics turned deadly.
Well, just because Wen Ruohan isn’t a thing doesn’t meant the Yin Irons aren’t a thing. Is there political bullshit waiting to happen? Absolutely. Except our protagonists are proactive this time.
For months, both Qinghe and Gusu have been getting reports of strange sightings along their Lanling borders. NMJ and LXC have been investigating, and they suspect that JGS may have had something to do with it. Prior to Lan Xichen’s disappearance, he was getting close to finding out the truth.
What happened was this:
Xue Yang (who will exist solely in other people’s narration) had killed the Changs and taken a piece of the Yin Iron. Upon capture, XXC and SL (both alive and well and doing their own thing) delivered him to the Chief Cultivator, thinking justice has been served. (Lol. no.). Once JGS got his hands on one of those, he began to plan world domination bad things with it and shit started acting fucky right away, eliciting the suspicion and subsequent investigations of the Lans and Nies.
Jin Guangshan does wonder how his secrets are being leaked, but he doesn’t get to find out until the end.
Lan Xichen, on his part, is fairly sure of what’s been causing the appearances of these so called “fierce corpses”. He knows about Lan Yi’s barrier in the Cold Cave, and suspects someone has gotten their hands on a piece of the Yin Iron. Both he and Nie Mingjue suspect Jin Guangshan, and have been quietly collecting proof.
Jin Guangshan, not about to be defeated so easily, sets up a trap and ambushes Lan Xichen during one of his investigations. LXC was in “plain clothes” as part of the investigation, because it’s dumb to go around investigating dressed as the Sect Leader of Gusu Lan, but during the ambush, Lan Xichen loses Liebing and Shuoyue in the process.  The only thing he has on him is Shuoyue’s sheath when he is found by Meng Yao.
When Lan Xichen wakes up, he doesn’t remember anything or who he is. He sees a pretty young man who introduces himself as Lianfang. Lan Xichen was wearing blue when he was found, so “Liangfang” calls hims A-Lan.
Meng Yao’s tragic back story that’s actually tragic:
The bullshit - er, the story - as always, starts with Meng Yao getting kicked down the steps at Jinlintai by his Ho™ of a dad Jin Guangshan. In this universe, Jin Guangshan isn’t just a rich powerful Sect Leader, but also the Chief Cultivator. If anything, he has more reason than ever to make sure Meng Yao isn’t around to besmirch his good name (not that he has any good name to bismirch).
Claiming Meng Yao to be a liar, Jin Guangshan ordered his goons to have Meng Yao “taken care of”, but before that could happen, Madam Jin had come out to see what was the commotion. This was Zixuan’s birthday celebration after all, everything had to be perfect.
What she saw certainly enraged her, but her husband was about to kill a boy, possibly his own son, spill blood on their son’s day of birth celebration. Such cosmic bad karma she couldn’t possibly accept. “You don’t have to kill him, you absolute buffoon, just make sure he never comes back here!”
She meant buy his silence with money but Jin Guangshan had a more permanent solution.
Before the day’s out, Meng Yao was sold to a brothel, and was told “that’s where you belong”.  Once, perhaps, he had dreamed about gaining the love of his father, but no longer. Now he simply wants his father ruined and dismembered.
But first he has to live.
The madam of the brothel had a keen eye for “good merchandise”, and one good look at young Meng Yao with those big eyes, delicate frame and dimples and she knew she could make big bucks off of him.
(And before anyone asks how old MY is here, the answer is: young. One of the many reasons why I would personally like to volunteer to stab JGS until it looks like he’s been cursed with the Thousand Holes Curse.)
The first couple of years were decidedly grim for MY. He was kept away from customers (mercifully), but he was a brutally trained in the art of dance and music. They kept him fed enough to dance but not too much to “ruin his figure”. His instructors quickly found that the youth was a quick study and got up no matter how many times he was trampled on (literally and metaphorically). It was no secret that life was gruesome, but Meng Yao survived. Meng Yao made his debut. Meng Yao became famous.
The establishment where he made his debut renamed him Lianfang - to collect/gather fragrance - and so from then on, he became Lianfang-gongzi. Soon, his art (and other stuff) caught the eye of an obliging patron who purchased him from the madam.
The patron, by all accounts, was a brute of man who had more appreciation for the liquor in his cup than the arts, but he was a cultivator, wealthy enough, connected to many other cultivator gentry familiues, and most importantly, led a subsidiary clan of the Chief Cultivator. As his prized courtesan and dancer, Meng Yao served at his whim, entertained at his parties and made happy his friends, all of whom were practicing cultivators or at the very least connected to the cultivation realm.
Our evil gremlin would not be our evil gremlin if he didn’t make the best of every situation. Meng Yao quickly discovered that not only was he particularly talented at getting people to divulge information to him, but that men were significantly uninhibited after sex and alcohol. Armed with a sweet face, an eidetic memory, and a hate inside him that longed to see Jin Guangshan severed limp by limp, he began his revenge plot.
(Here, I took inspiration from Nirvana in Fire’s character Princess Xuanji of the fallen Hua kingdom who was sold into servitude but established Hong’xiu’zhao, a spy network of girls/women who either worked as courtesans or secondary spouses of noblemen. Her goal was to create chaos and dissension within the royal court and government, like mites eating away at a large tree from within.)
Meng Yao amassed an enormous amount of intels on gentry families and evidences of the many underhanded conducts of the Chief Cultivator himself. He did this through his own work and through the other women working in his network, all of whom have been wrongfully aggrieved in some way. He promised them that one day he would help them to freedom.
For five years he’s been collecting secrets of gentry families, and had been stirring discord for three, weakening their cohesiveness, and using their growing animosity to weaken Jin Guangshan’s control on his subordinates. Naturally, Meng Yao heard about Xue Yang and the Yin Iron. It was also him who had been drawing attention to it for the other major sects.
Meng Yao doesn’t know Lan Xichen is the Sect Master of Gusu Lan, but he has no interest in hurting a man from nowhere. “You can stay here with me until you are better. After that, I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to be on your way.”
Physically Lan Xichen recovered quickly, but when it was clear his memories wouldn’t be coming back, Meng Yao allowed him to stay.
The rest, as they say, is history.
~
Meng Yao has been Lianfang, been the famed courtesan, for longer than he cares to remember. He’s been had, used, and passed around by so many men that their faces are just blurried sillouettes in his memory. And yet, he’s never felt for a moment that he belonged to any of them, not even his patron, who possessed his contract and could resell him back to a lesser establishment and ruin him in a heartbeat.
But when A-Lan held him in his eyes, warm and dark like a summer’s night, without judgement or expectations, only gentle sweetness and a fond regard, Meng Yao could almost pretend he was just A-Yao, the name whispered reverently by those soft lips. The hand that held his moved to stroke his cheek, almost shy, and Meng Yao realized with a fearful pang that if this man from nowhere with nothing were to ask, Meng Yao could most definitely become his.
The thought scared him more than he was willing to admit.
~
The message delivered by the pigeon was clear. Meng Yao crumbled the slip of paper in his hand, then set it aflame in the candlelight.
The man who’s been living with him for the past four months, who he knew as A-Lan, who he trusted enough to take to bed, was the Sect Master of Gusu Lan: Lan Huan, Lan Xichen.
Zewu-jun.
Everyone, even a non-cultivator such as himself, has heard of Gusu’s Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen’s young widower, left alone after not even six months of marriage.
But if even he wasn’t married, Lan Xichen could never accept him as he was, no matter now much his personal desire wanted him.
His hands shook. He balled them into fists.
Meng Yao should’ve known... he should’ve known it was too good to be true.
No matter, he told himself. This too, is an opportunity, perhaps the only one I will ever have. I will use it to destroy Jin Guangshan once and for all.
~
Lan Xichen made his way to the window, and gazed out into the courtyard where A-Yao was reading under the willow tree.
You should go home, a voice inside him said. Go home to relief Wangji of his burden, to release Wuxian from his mourning. Go back to the seat of Sect Master and the responsibilities waiting for you.
One more day, another voice fought back. Just one more day.
He doesn’t leave for another month.

11, 18, 30, 36, 40, 46, and 60 for the Untamed asks?
mkay, let’s see how much I can try not to squeal, scream or go overboard on XD (I’m teasing) 11. Tags You Mostly Filter On Ao3 For Currently, I’m fishing my way through the wealth of WangXian right now, but I’m apparently leaning into bicycle!Xichen somehow?? (like, I can ship him with SO MANY PEOPLE) I’m also flitting between “gimme that smut” and “I just want domestic bliss” . . . Also big on fics that involve characters becoming animals or just being anthro in some way (I may be a furry?) 18. Something You Want To Change In The Story I . . . I want to repair the relationship between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, most of all. Bc it just feels like they need it so much. I mean, by all means, keep up the whole angst buildup, totally . . . but a wind down where they can go back to “you’d better eat the soup if I puke it up” jokes . . . man, that’d be great. 30. A Ship You Like But People Have A Lot Of Opinions About I dunno yet - I’m not so deep into the fandom I’ve uncovered discourse that much - I tend to just sit in the corner of fandoms and play with things on my own as is. But I mean . . . I do like the Yi city trio as a relationship, even if it’s toxic. So probably that one? 36. Character You Would Have Liked To Have More Background/Screen-Time Y’know, after reading your take with Ouyang Zizhen, I have to agree with it. I want to know more about him, he’s gotta be part of the juniors squad for a reason, right? 40. Who’s Voice Is Your Favourite? I . . . I’m a sucker for deep voices. Even as mine gets deeper, I love a deep voice. (either that or I’m playing favorites because I’ve been YiBo’d) I’m trying to think objectively and it just gives me too many to choose just one, so since my brain auto-jumped to Lan Wangji, yeah. 46. Favourite Fanfic / A Fanfic You Want To Recommend Oh, this is easy AF - Twelve Moons and a Fortnight by @stiltonbasket they’re so dumb and it’s so perfect, I love it. (WangXian, technical slow burn but not - in the way of “but does he feel the way I do?” and WWX just being dumb about feelings. Expect many facepalms, but in a “omg you’re dumb why do I like you as a character?” way [which I consider a good way]) 60. Favourite Character Development I will not play favorites based on looks . . . LOL. In all honesty, I really want to say Jin Ling. Like, we meet this irritable, spoiled brat and that’s an automatic ‘ugh’ from me, but you really do get to see him grow as a person, even if it’s not a whole life changing moment like LWJ’s moment in the rain. It’s a slow, bit by bit growth that just feels . . . good. He has a long way to go, for sure, but he’s started, and that’s what makes me smile about it.

yeeting patriarch jc notices dogs are drawn to wen ning?
ssyifpfff🌙 he notices MAYBE?? hes not a dangerous zombie after all???
May 16 he lets it slip and asks how wuxian reacted to it
as wwx is terrified of dogs
and wen ning is like. where we... spent most of our time... there were no dogs
(awkward silence timel
ah. ruined it again.
okay 2 take
when they're on those night hunts, wen ning + sizhui & jiang cheng + jin ling
fairy starts being Too Friendly towards wen ning
both jiang cheng and jin ling were initially taken aback by it
yeeting patriarch but as the time goes on... it Softens their heart
ssyifpfff🌙 iT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BC FAIRY IS A SPIRITUAL DOG N IT WOULDNT NVR BE FRIENDLY TO AN EVIL GHOUL SO IT RLY MAKES THM SEE THT WEN NING ISNT A BAD GUY
May 16 ssyifpfff🌙 also take 2 on tht dog thing, wen ning is like "ah wei wuxian made me chase any dogs away, i quite like dogs but i had to" to remind jc of the puppies he had to give away bc of wwx lmao :)
May 16 yeeting patriarch THEY START REALIZING WEN NING IS THE PUREST ANGEL... and opening up, in their tsun ways, with him
yeeting patriarch i like how the canon wen ning art is him with a ginger cat, but for the sake of jiangning we made him a dog person
i honestly picture him being the snow white os mdzs, just all animals gathering around him
bird perching on his shoulders, deer eating from his hands. jiang cheng confused af
hes Prince Not Charming
ssyifpfff🌙 Prince Cursing, if u will
May 16 yeeting patriarch WEN NING SNOW WHITE OF MDZS AND HIS PRINCE CURSING JIANG CHENG IM YELLINGGFFKDJSKSK
yeeting patriarch jiang cheng going thru the trees and shit then he finds wen ning all surrounded by all animals cutely around him, the birds singing, some squirrels on the top of his head, a butterfly kissing his nose and suddenly the scene seem to have 💖Sparkles 💖 around. jiang cheng is like *rubs his eye and looks again* What
ssyifpfff🌙 "hey you... you have some animals on you" n wen ning was just super still he only focuses on jc "Oh yes. they do this sometimes. its ok i enjoy it"
May 16 ssyifpfff🌙 "everytime i wake up theres a few little ones on me, they must think im a rock or something" jiang cheng, internally, seein all the animals: CLEARLY THEY ENJOY IT TOO???
May 16 yeeting patriarch JIANG CHENG MACHINE BROKE
ssyifpfff🌙 MEAN JIANG CHENG.EXE STOPPED WORKING
May 16 PRECISELY HENSKLDGSKLS
i would like the idea of, somewhere farther into the future,
some cultivator bitch being mean to wen ning and by instinct jiang cheng ends up standing for wen 5
wen ning*
but then hes a sect leader and...
yknow how it wouldnt work
yeeting patriarch BUT A NYARI CAN DREAM!?
THEY CAN AT LEAST BE ... LIKE.... PHILTATOS
ssyifpfff🌙 MOST BELOVED
May 17 jiang cheng has responsibilities but thEY CAN BE LIKE YOU KNOW.... CASUAL
ssyifpfff🌙 they dont gotta marry. not every couple can be wangxian
May 17 PHILTATOSSSSSSSS
tbh im all in for casual couples too
yeeting patriarch not everyone needs or can have Marriage
hmmmmmm the more jc starts seeing The Light in wn, when they're at the middle of the road,
yeeting patriarch more tangled his emotions get?
he was supposed to LOATHE wen ning but then he sees what happened wasnt wen nings fault. hes angry, who to blame then? wuxian! but it also isnt entirely wwx's fault he lost the control, the dark cultivation is a dangerous path after all... and wwx had a lot on his shoulders... and most of all: it was the only path he could follow without his golden core :) the very golden core that now resides inside jc. who should he blame? who should he hate?? Himself???
yeeting patriarch goddammit can i stop with the suffering
me: snow white au hehe you, chaotic bastard: what if jiang cheng hated himself lmao
i hate specifically tht iT MAKES SENSE
ssyifpfff🌙 HE SPENT. OVER A DECADE BLAMING WEN NING N WUXIAN N TO REALIZE HE WAS WRONG, HE WASTED ALL THOSE YEARS. WHOS HE GONNA TURN THT HATE TOWARD??? HIMSELF OFC!!!!! OF COURSE!!!!!!1
May 17 HOLD UP THAT I GRAB BOTH OF US TO JUMP INTO THE HELL HOLE BUT I CAN ALSO SAVE US
listen up,
one day all those feelings that keep growing and bottling up inside jc overflow and he explodes in yelling and tears and etc
wen ning, whom was with him, witness all that
yeeting patriarch and tries to soothe his state of mind
yeeting patriarch telling him that it's no one's fault. none of them couldve known what would happen. all sides had their good intentions here and there, but unfortunately fates can twist it in a way they never expected
BUT THEN jc returns with an "then why do u look like u blame yourself as well?" BECAUSE WEN NING DOES
yeeting patriarch sorry apparently the half brain cell i have working, only does suffering hours
"THEN WHY DO U BLAME URSELF"
nyari u sAID U COULD SAVE US
ssyifpfff🌙 wen ning is like "..............." jiang cheng: i know it wasnt anyones fault but then what am i supposed to feel? who am i supposed to hate??"
May 17 yeeting patriarch IM LAUGHINGS O MUCH IM NOT BRSTJINENSKS
wen ning is like No one. there isnt any1 to blame anymore
ssyifpfff🌙 im franctically tryin to make it bETTER NYARI LEND ME A HAND DAM IT
May 17
MY THROAT HURTS IM TOO BROKE LIKE (MANIC LAUGHTER)
yeeting patriarch okay lemme get myself back together and try to offer some fix it
yeeting patriarch me: *shaking, weakly offering a tiny ass pink hello kitty band aid* This Will Fix Everything (the hell hole im offering the band aid for is like 17cm)
yeeting patriarch wen ning goes confident mode again and says that he cant help it as much jc and wwx, all of them will feel guilty no matter what anyone says. they tried their best but it backfired and they will need, they have to, learn how to live in terms with it. not forgetting, but still forgiving themselves and each other
wen ning obv has the wisdom of some1 who has died, seen death, been death, and come back to life
he has an appreciation for the little things no others would have
if any1 could emotionally guide jc it wOULD BE HIM1!
ssyifpfff🌙 "i have regrets too, but theres no choice for any of us but to live w them n learn"
May 17 ssyifpfff🌙 ALSO
May 17 ssyifpfff🌙 i think wen nings sensibility woULD BE SO GOOD FOR JC, hes always tense he needs a break of him just being so still tht birds can perch on his shoulders
May 17
WEN NINGGGGGGGGG
yeeting patriarch he'll literally become jc's heaven sent angel... his solace and calm
like, after that breakdown and the things wen ning said
yeeting patriarch jiang cheng actually does feel... Lighter
wen ning boutta be jiang chengs therapist
ssyifpfff🌙 its what he needs
May 17 but as jiang cheng starts dealing better with his internal demons
he starts seeing more too that wen ning isnt only light
wen ning carries his pain too, inevitably
and jc starts to help wn as well
yeeting patriarch each other's company start being the healing they needed?
woke
ssyifpfff🌙 jiang cheng teached wn confidence and wen ning teaches jiang cheng stillness and softness
May 17 i teared up here
after The Wen Ning Effect, and jiang cheng softening. people of his sect start to be... less afraid of him? AND BETTER, the respect level only grows!
jiang cheng realizing there is strength in softness too
that to be tender doesnt mean to be weak
of course his actions arent Oh, Super Obvious as he is a tsun
yeeting patriarch but u can feel The Difference on his aura
YOU HAVE TO BE SOFT TO BE STRONG JIANG CHENG
ASKJDAJSDGF
ssyifpfff🌙 I KNOW THAT WHEN LOVE IS LOST..............
May 17 yeeting patriarch I LOVE HOW IN SYNC WE ARE MY MIND ALSO WENT SOFT TO BE STRONF .MP3
ssyifpfff🌙 WE'VE KNOWN IT ALL ALONG THE TRUTH IS............ YOU HAVE TO BE S
May 17 yeeting patriarch ME, ON THE FLOOR, SOBBING, SINGING ALONF,
ssyifpfff🌙 EXTREME MOOD RN
May 17 yeeting patriarch we did done it again and again... i cannot believe it
honestly if the ppl in his sect see tht jc has the ghost general over for tea they'd be like Wow sect leader cheng rly is amazing
ssyifpfff🌙 hes so fearless
May 17 im tearing up again
HMMMMMMMMM his relationship with wen ning also being a bridge for some fixing for his relationship with wuxian...........
takes so much time and it's slow
but
after he took it all in, and especially wen nings words that he shouldn't forget to forgive, and has to live with it
he starts Understanding the events. that is was inevitable. and that the anger would not help nor be good for any of them
yeeting patriarch that for the ones around them (like jin ling) they need to... overcome it
*sobbing* wen ning even helping him to overcome his inferiority complex !?
yeeting patriarch making jc see that this and this sides of him are greater and make up for this and this other ones. that he, too, was of vital importance on here and there
tht the ppl around him look up to him, tht they dont compare him to wuxian, tht the strenght he has shown isnt just coming from his golden core but from his choices as well
from his leadership
also jiang cheng realizing yanli wouldnt want him to hate
ssyifpfff🌙 the worst part abt yanlis death is tht we dont ever hear her last words
May 17 ssyifpfff🌙 she doesnt get to finish sayin thm, we dont know what she was gonna say to wuxian n i firmly believe tht if she has finished n she had said she didint blame him, thn jiang cheng wouldnt have been as hung up on hate as he was
May 17 yeeting patriarch
yeeting patriarch tbh yanli... she just Understood more. faster than the two dense dumbasses
SHE WAS SO BRIGHT
AND MATURE
ssyifpfff🌙 I MISS HER EVERYDAY
May 17 and it's like. Obvious she wouldnt want them to be that way. she would want them to understand the terms of the situation and overcome it TOGETHER
IM SO SAD SHE DESERVED BETTER :(((
but after jiang cheng learns how to deals with his demons,
and most important of all: Grows (emotionally)
he starts seeing things a bit more like his sister would
yeeting patriarch WWYLD (What Would YanLi Do)
yeeting patriarch hmm now what's left is his daddy issues
WWYLD!!!!!
sadasdfsf the fuck jiang dad
ssyifpfff🌙 can u believ wen ning is jiang chengs love+fear era
May 17 hmmmmmmmm let's say that as he watches himself raise jin ling he starts to understand his dad couldn't be easy on him. and that he Had To be softer on wwx's for his situations
i cant go deeper on this one because his dad messed up
yeeting patriarch but let's say that was really the case,
ssyifpfff🌙 yes theres no excuse for his dad, he had a soft spot for wwx n his favoritism showed
May 17 ssyifpfff🌙 its more like, its important for jc to Know it doesnt matter, he grew up to be a good leader n tht proved his dad wrong
May 17 IT'S HARD TO FIND A SITUATION OUT OF HIS DAD REASONS he messed up
BUT!!! YES!!!!!!!
learn to let go of those feelings towards his dad
yeeting patriarch and the day it finally fully clicked inside him that he became an amazing sect leader, he proved it
it's also important that he could realize having wwx golden core inside him means as if wwx really kept his promise
he stayed by his side
yeeting patriarch a very important piece of wwx will always be with him

The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 2 (spoilers for everything)
(covers MDZS chaps 6 - 10 and a bit of 13)
WangXian meter: 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰
(a 🐰 is earned every time there is a WangXian scene or even when they’re just thinking of each other)
I always tell people when I’m trying to get them to watch The Untamed that when they get to this particular scene in the second episode, they’ll know if they will be into the show. To me, this is the game-changer moment: you’re either in or out after this. If this scene doesn’t emotionally move you enough to at least continue on with the drama, nothing else will.  It is seriously one of the most romantic scenes I have ever seen captured on screen. This was the moment that made me realize not only was I now fully committed to CQL, but that I had also found a new obsession and was ready to devote myself to Mo Dao Zu Shi.  After all, something that can lead to the creation of such a beautiful scene MUST hold other invaluable treasures. So into the MDZS rabbit hole I went, happily diving head first.
Tumblr media
Even now I’m still amazed that this scene exists in the intact form that it does. I started The Untamed with little to no expectations, especially knowing the restrictions it was under AND having just finished Guardian and experiencing how poor creative decisions can arise due to censorship (or at least, using that as an excuse for their dumb story choices). As I mentioned previously, the first episode was a hard sell since they definitely did not put their best foot forward first, but I liked Xiao Zhan immediately and Wei Wuxian as a character was interesting enough that I wanted to learn more about his past that led to his death and rebirth. The small glimpses we saw of his relationship with Lan Zhan also fascinated me, but then with this second episode, the weak points of the pilot still remained: there was still bad CGI (the statue) and very amateurish technical mistakes (in the recognition scene, at one point, in a close-up shot they’re holding onto each other, but in the next far away backside shot they’re clearly standing apart from each other, only to return to holding each other once again once the camera cuts back to a close-up...whoever the editor is on CQL probably should dunk their head in the toilet every time these editing errors pop up) that made my initial viewing of this episode a frustrating one for most of its runtime. I think I spent most of my initial viewing just distracted, playing on my phone or something, until the big WangXian moment happened and then I was shocked and awed.  I know I wasn’t paying close attention that first time because when I rewatched the episode later on, I realized I missed a lot of dialogue and details. I have since revisited this second episode numerous times more, and I do feel bad about how dismissive I was initially. It’s a pretty loaded episode: it has funny, poignant, creepy, mysterious, and cool moments while still feeding us bits of the overarching plot. I definitely have developed an affection for it since my first viewing and it’s become one of my favorite episodes in the series.
Of Pining & other Heart-achy Things
Tumblr media
This simple line from Jiang Cheng is enough to make my eyes well up with tears: I can’t help but imagine Lan Zhan traveling around the world for sixteen years, most likely all alone, stopping at different places to play Inquiry, fervently hoping that maybe one day he’ll finally receive an answering chord from Wei Ying, only to be confronted by a deafening silence again and again and again. How utterly sad and disappointed he must have been every time, and yet still, he never gave up and just went to the next location to do the same thing and experience the same heavy disappointment all over again. If that doesn’t make your heart ache, I’m sorry to tell you, your heart is no longer functional.
Tumblr media
It’s a detail I don’t remember if the novel covered, but I’m assuming that Lan Zhan was the one to bring Wei Ying’s inventions like the spirit attraction flag and the compass back to Gusu and incorporate them for use in his sect’s normal cultivation practices.  I know other people have use his tools as well since that nameless cultivator at the start of the episode was also using the spirit compass, but I feel that with Lan Wangji, he probably purposefully acquired and adapted WWX’s techniques so that every time they’re used, they can serve as a reminder of Wei Ying for him. Though it does make me wonder how Lan Zhan managed to get those approved by his uncle; I can’t imagine Lan Qiren being ok with using anything that was created by the man whom he blames for the corruption of his beloved nephew and model student. Did LWJ just pretend he created them instead? That doesn’t even sound right. Maybe Uncle Lan decided to be merciful and just let Lan Zhan win this one since he was probably obviously miserable after Wei Ying’s death.   Yeah, I can buy that scenario, especially since the flag and compass are pretty useful tools.
Tumblr media
I wondered did LWJ already suspect “Mo Xuanyu” was Wei Ying before he started playing Wuji on his flute. It’s curious that he happened to be in that part of the forest at that time. I’m guessing his Wei Ying senses were tingled when he heard about Mo Xuanyu’s skills from Sizhui and the boys so that’s why he was hanging around the vicinity just in case MXY reveals his true identity. After waiting 16 years for this reunion, it’s no wonder Lan Zhan had no qualms about holding onto WWX’s wrist in public for much longer than socially appropriate.
Tumblr media
I actually get a little emotional every time I rewatch this episode and watch Jin Ling display his mad archery skills because I would always think of how much he takes after his dad. His parents would’ve been so proud to see him all grown up like this; Shijie would’ve been so happy she probably would get teary-eyed as well every time she saw her boy in action. Sure, he’s a spoiled little princess, but he is also a pretty skilled princess with a heart of gold and I just wish they had more time together as a family.
Tumblr media
They looked so happy, look at all those smiles. It really makes me so sad that Wei Ying will probably never be able to hug JC like that again, and of course he’ll never be able to hug Shijie period. Great now I want to cry again.
Lan Jingyi Appreciation Section
Tumblr media
I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this precious boy by name so far, so I wanted to take this opportunity to show him some much deserved love. Lan Jingyi with his resting bitch face and steady stream of snark was really the MVP of this episode. He actually made me laugh out loud a few times...in fact, he almost always makes me laugh as soon as he scrunches up his face like he’s smelling something bad. I recently saw someone mention that he’s really the most un-Lan of the Lans (sorry, I forgot who posted that so I apologies for not giving proper credit) and that is really the perfect description of him. I love this kid as much as I love Sizhui and Jin Ling, and I am also sincerely fascinated by him. I mean, who raised him in the Gusu Lan sect? Cuz I cannot imagine Lan Qiren being the one since Jingyi undoubtedly would’ve had all his snark driven out of him at an early age. Hell, the amount of disciplinary action he probably had to have gone through would’ve probably killed him at a young age.  Did he join the sect when he was already fully formed so that’s why he’s still breaking Lan sect rules right and left? He threatened an old man and is like rude to everyone. I don’t know all 3000 rules but I’m pretty sure being mean to the elderly and insulting to supposedly mentally unstable people are probably not allowed. If anything, his disposition would make him more suitable for the Lanling Jin sect and yet he’s with the stuffy Lans. WHY? I could watch a whole spin-off series with just him and the other juniors as long as we get to learn about how he came to be with the Gusu Lan sect. He’s hilarious and adorable, and among the many the reasons why I wish we had more episodes for the present-day arc, one of them is because I wanted to spend more time with the juniors, especially Lan Jingyi, even if it meant the screenwriters would’ve had to go off book and create new scenes for them. It would’ve been well worth it to hear LJY throw more shade at people.
Random Bits of Randomness
Tumblr media
It’s kinda crazy how WWX just stood there with his back turned, oblivious to Jin Ling’s attack. If Lan Zhan’s blade hadn’t blocked JL’s sword, that would’ve been the end of our main protagonist. I just thought that was such an odd scene...I would’ve felt just a little better if Wei Ying had at least had a little more awareness that an attack was heading for him and made some attempt to get out of the way.
Tumblr media
Ugh, that mask. First of all it’s ugly AF, and secondly it’s so freaking ill-fitting it was distracting. Would’ve been nice if the production team gave him a mask that actually fit his face. I mean, did it HAVE to be THAT damn big? I’m amazed they don’t have bts clips of Xiao Zhan tripping and hurting himself because the stupid mask blocked his vision.
Tumblr media
Other than being a brilliant mastermind and Oscar-worthy actor, Nie Huaisang has got to be one of the greatest cultivators if not THE greatest cultivator of all time to be able to conjure up an illusion like that. That thing was doing real damage to people. If it was just a phantom, what the heck was holding up those two cultivators in midair like that? And what kicked Jin Ling around? I know Wei Ying was able to drive people crazy with his flute during his Yiling Patriarch phase, but his handiwork still felt more grounded and reasonable than this.
Questions I still have (please feel free to answer them):
- Who was that old man at the grave? Someone NHS paid to just hang around the graves until the juniors and WWX came by?
- So NHS basically fucked up Yan’s entire family and God knows how many other people just to get WWX to eventually play his flute to lure Wen Ning out from wherever he was hiding?
- How did JGY not know Wen Ning escaped? Or did he just leave those details to Xue Yang so he didn’t really care about what happened to Wen Ning?  I’m trying if this was addressed in the book but my mind is coming up empty. I don’t think it was brought up in the show though, or I just completely missed it.
Overall Episode Rating: 9 Lil Apples out of 10
