GRRR the built in speedpaint / timer thing in ibis is busted for this one drawing I'm working on noooooo. It's saying I've spent 7 hours on it so far but I HAVEN'T I just forgot to close the canvas. Also I thought usually I could do that and it's fine? But this time there's a huge chunk of the speedpaint playback that's just nothing happening so I KNOW it was registering SOMETHING during that time... sad!

Thanks for your last post! I'm trying to draw since yrs but sometimes I can't get satisfied and I often lose my motivation. I feel guilty when I'm not drawing for weeks because I feel lazy and depressed. But when I saw your post I felt better. I follow you on IG since months now and I watch your speed paint videos ( I just found your tumblr Oo" ). I'm really in love with your style and seeing how you have progressed since 3 yrs gives me motivation and makes me feel better. So thank you so much
I’m so glad my post motivated you! I’ve been seeing so many people feel down and unmotivated lately because their improvement is slow, it takes years but thats okay! To stay motivated I just think of how much my art will improve by the end of the year then when the end of the year comes, I got through and look at all the art I created that year! It really works! And thank you for watching my speedpaints, they don’t get much attention nowadays!

Hello, do you have any advices for digital starters? Or something in general? Your art is amazing and adds 1000000 years and smiles to my life ❤
Ahh you’re such a sweetheart! I’ll try to give some advice, but please remember I’m definitely not a professional, nor expert, nor really much of anything LOL But this is some advice I tcan share:
My biggest piece of advice is to draw first what you love, because it makes everything easier. If you’re passionate and interested in what you’re drawing, you’ll draw it more, and then you will improve a  lot faster.
Also, don’t just grind practice alone. Watch speedpaints or tutorials on youtube (or read some that artists post) and apply what you learn from them. I watch SO many speed paints (especially while eating lol) by artists I like, even if they don’t draw anything like me (or what i’d like to draw like) because I love seeing how other people work, you can always learn something from someone else.
Figure out how you want to color digitally - are you more interested in cel shaded style, or more painterly? I know I kind of... veer between the two a lot lol, but I think starting out definitely picking one will help a lot!
Try out a couple different programs and find what works for you. A lot have free trials, and there are some great actual full free programs out there (Krita is entirely free! My friend likes FireAlpaca which is also free!) I personally use Clip Studio Paint (especially for doing any comic or black/white stuff) or Sai (because I prefer the line brushes I have in sai....).
I also always open up my work in photoshop after I have finished it and adjust it with a curves layer or do some selective color/color lookup on it to get the colors a bit more vibrant or deep. That’s just something I do and probably a hangover from my time doing photography in school, lol.
POST YOUR WORK!!!! I know it’s scary, but honestly posting my work was one of the biggest things that helped me. You get to meet other people, talk, and share what you like. It really helps me a lot. (I find I get most interaction on IG and Tumblr, personally)
But also, on that note, don’t like... over think or stress about notes, comments, likes, etc (whatever SM platform you’re posting on). In time, they will come. Just do what you love, share it with people and people will be drawn to that because they can see the love you put into what you do :D

The picture ahead is the first page of my 2017 sketchbook (with some ugly frenglish). I wanted to draw smth that represent me… IKEMEN, Ikemen is good for a fujoshi (^ v ^)
(long text post ahead, quick self-intro at the end for whose who don’t care about the rest~)
“I’M THAT KIND OF ARTIST…”
I’m that kind of artist who like drawing, but don’t do it often because they know they don’t have the skill to reproduce what they have in mind and got frustrated even before starting.
I’m that kind of artist who get motivated and inspired while watching speedpainting (or timelapse whatever you call it) on youtube and can sometimes spend near 80€ on art supply to try new techniques (seen on YT) but end up never testing it for the reason explained above.
I’m that kind of artist who buy a new sketchbook everytime they go to the art supply but never finish it for the same reason explained above’s above.
I’m that kind of artist which art is sometime better two years ago because they end up not drawing for one year and they had to nearly start over.
I’m that kind of artist who rarely (rarely of rarely) finish a piece and therefore are more comfortable with being called a “doodler” than an “artist” (because I feel like a fraud when I call myself an “artist”).
I’m that kind of artist who relate to every artists memes that pops on their dashboard.
BUT
Like every years, I did make lightly the “This Year I’ll draw seriously.” New Year resolution. But I don’t know why, this year it stuck in me. Seeing as I was more productive starting January (I drew more in 1 month than in 10 months in 2016), I bought a A5 sketchbook with 120 pages and challenged me to finish it by the end of the year (this might sounds easy for some people ahah).
Lately I started lurking on Instagram. I’m usually not good with SNS (like, I’m only “active” (more like lurking) on FB and Tumblr) and I always thought that IG was reserved to selfies-addicts, gourmets and all-around-the-world-travelers (or the three combined) (EDIT 2020 : the word I was looking for there is “influencers” ahah) and I wasn’t feeling concerned at all. I was honestly startled when I discovered how big was the art community on IG (how naive of me…), I immediately felt that a lot was going on.
You know, maybe it’s just me but in my mind every SNS has a different purpose/feeling in the art community. I mean, DeviantArt (at its prime) was where artists put their finished pieces. Tumblr at first was where they put their sketches and WIP (then it changed with its gain of popularity and the falling of dA). Facebook is where artists promote themselves to everyone (I mean, to the people not familiar with artistic website/communities). Twitter is where a lot of Asian artists post their art. ArtStation has that very strong intimidating professionnal vibe, it’s obviously only professionals portfolios (and companies hiring)…
And I have the feeling that IG is where artists show their traditional art. Now phones take good pictures and artists take less the time to scan their art. I became quickly interested. First because Asian artists are using it too. I know that Twitter is highly popular in Asia and highly used by artists but it is the least SNS I’m good with (though I keep trying). So IG gives me one place where I can admire everyone from everywhere. And then, as I said I started a new sketchbook, I thought IG could be just what I need to share my drawings and to keep me motivated on the way. After a few days of watching, starting following artists, learning IG vocabulary, I started posting a few things myself.
In that short lapse of time (around 2 weeks) I got me motivated more than I could imagine. All these traditional arts influenced me and I finally tried the watercolor supplies I bought one year ago. Turns out it’s a damn less easy than it looks but I like it anyway. The same way I went to buy some more Copics and Promarkers. I try to regularly do reference poses drawing and I feel that I start to get a better grip on anatomy and it’s satisfying. For the first time in a while I feel that…
I’M MOVING FORWARD.
This being said ! I enjoy IG, but Tumblr is the SNS I like the best. I want to share my art here too but I don’t want to just put it randomly on my main blog.
So here, secondary art blog created !
For the quick self-introduction, I’m 20-something years old, I’m French and I studied Japanese and character making and animations for video games.
(Instagram is em-niico BTW)
